A team of researchers is developing a "<keyword id="15560470" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dual-mode-brain-sensing-device" source="Orion">dual-mode brain-sensing device</keyword>" that detects <keyword id="6411190" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Alzheimers-disease" source="Orion">Alzheimer's disease</keyword> (AD) quickly and effectively, a new report has said. According to UTA (University of Texas at Arlington), Hanli Liu, a bioengineering professor, will be the principal investigator of the project "Digital biomarkers for Alzheimer's Disease with compact dual-mode brain sensing". She says "what we are doing in this project is developing a quick and comfortable method to measure metabolic, hemodynamic and electrophysiological (MHE) activities in the human brain". "The proposed development enables us to identify digital neurophysiological biomarkers. After we cross-validate them, they can be used for accurate detection of Alzheimer's in each patient as well as for screening for the early phase of AD," she added. This device records data from near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, as well as from dry/wireless electroencephalograms (EEG), according to the report. In spectroscopy, NIR light is absorbed and emitted by the human cortex, while in electroencephalography, electrical activity in the brain reflects dynamic neural activity. This multifunctional device will be able to measure a variety of brain-health parameters, such as cerebral metabolism, cerebral blood volume, cerebral oxygenation, brain oscillation powers and functional connectivity and neurovascular coupling, the report added. The Alzheimer's Association estimates that 50 million people worldwide, including more than 6 million Americans, suffer from Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia. Among all types of dementia, AD kills more people than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined. AD and other types of dementia cost $355 billion in 2021, a figure that is expected to rise to more than $1 trillion by 2050, said the report. New Delhi, British-Swedish pharmaceutical firm <keyword id="6409874" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="astrazeneca">AstraZeneca</keyword> on Monday announced a a partnership with Mumbai-based <keyword id="6327028" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="qure-ai">Qure.ai</keyword>, a healthcare startup to integrate innovative artificial intelligence (AI) solutions for the <keyword id="67767" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Early-detection">early detection</keyword> of lung cancer in patients across India. AstraZeneca and Qure.ai will be covering the emerging market regions in Latin America, Asia, Middle East and Africa. The partnership aims to harness and scale-up the use of this technology to improve early-stage detection of lung cancer in the markets involved, to reduce mortality rates and improve patient outcomes. Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in India affecting one in 28 women and it is also the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women. Doctors of various healthcare institutions in Hyderabad say the lack of early detection of the disease is the main reason causing the death of women when they reach advanced stages of cancer. They have advised women to stay cautious of their health to ensure they do not neglect any cancerous symptoms. October is commemorated as 'Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and healthcare practitioners have appealed to the government to take necessary steps to spread awareness about this deadly disease even across rural areas. "Other than skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women. Mammograms are the best way to find breast cancer early when it is easier to treat and before it is big enough to feel or cause symptoms. Where mammography facilities are not available, breast self-examination can be taught to the women so that cancers of at least 2-3 cm in size can be diagnosed," said Dr M. Jwala Srikala Consultant Radiologist, KIMS Hospital. According to her, even illiterate women also can test themselves at home by pressing their breasts gently with the middle three fingers and sense if any lumps are there. "They should immediately consult a doctor if they find any lump in the breast. Early detection leads to giving qualitative life to the patients," she said. "Drinking alcohol is clearly linked to an increased risk of breast cancer. The risk increases with the amount of alcohol consumed. Being overweight or obese after menopause also increases breast cancer risk. Women who have not had children or had their first child after age 30 have a slightly higher breast cancer risk overall. Having many pregnancies and becoming pregnant at a young age reduces breast cancer risk," he explained. Surgery is an integral part of the treatment when treated with curative intent, but the entire process is a costly affair. Insurance policies and central or state government-run schemes cover partly or only a few of these modalities, resulting in patients paying from their pockets or resorting to the approved protocols, even if it is over/under-treating them. Doctors opine that the policies and schemes need to be more welcoming and be periodically updated on par with the changing trends in the management of these cancers for more people to reap the benefits. Breast cancer: Lack of early detection killing thousands of women every year

At the time, hospitals were scrambling to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-pandemic-hospitals-postpone-elective-procedures-2020-3">make room for coronavirus patients</a> while states were trying to quell community spread.Sally Grady, director of Kettering's breast evaluation centers, said they were forced to <a href="https://www.wkyc.com/article/news/health/gov-dewine-partially-lifts-order-against-elective-surgeries/95-a149597d-842b-431e-8aa1-6c0add9b8da6">cancel preventative screenings</a> for about six weeks due to orders by Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine.Grady, who oversees 13 centers that typically perform 65,000 mammograms each year, saw substantial declines, despite actively trying to reschedule as many screenings as possible."Some patients said 'I'm really going to wait until Covid is over before I want to come in,' and some wanted to wait very many months past what their annual screening date was," Grady told Insider.She said they were able to successfully reschedule many of those patients, but over the year found "our diagnostic mammograms and our biopsies actually increased." Meaning, there were more people already exhibiting symptoms of breast cancer, or cancers that were further along."And I think some of that was because patients waited," Grady said. She also serves as an adviser to Volpara Health Technologies, a provider of breast imaging analytics that focuses on preventing advanced-stage cancer.Even as clinics were able to reopen and resume preventative screenings, some patients have continued to avoid medical settings throughout the pandemic, due to a fear of contracting the virus. Delays in cancer screenings and early detection brought on by the pandemic could lead to a rise in deaths

New Delhi, Jan 31 () The Economic Survey on Friday unveiled an early-warning system, 'Health Score', that could read signs of impending rollover risk problems in the non-banking finance sector.
 The IL&amp;FS crisis following debt defaults in 2018 had led to a contagion in the domestic non-banking financial company (NBFCs) sector.
 The 'Health Score', developed for NBFC and housing finance company (HFCs) sectors, can help detect early-warning signals of impending liquidity problems facing the companies in the sectors.
 The Survey, presented in Parliament by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday, said the Health Score could be used to provide early warning signals of impending rollover risk problems in the NBFC sector and help set prudential threshold of permitted funding to the sector.
 A sudden payment default without any prior warning by Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services (IL&amp;FS) in August 2018 had triggered panic and caused liquidity crisis in the NBFC sector.
 Quoting the recent example of defaults on loan obligation by two IL&amp;FS' subsidiaries and Dewan Housing Finance Corporation (DHFL), the Survey also brings out the cascading adverse effect of NBFC defaults on the economy.
 The Survey said the Health Score is based on the rollover risk, which includes asset liability management risk, interconnectedness risk, and financial and operating resilience of an NBFC.
 The Economic Survey's analysis shows the Health Score for the HFC sector exhibited a declining trend after 2014. By the end of 2018-19, the health of the overall sector had worsened considerably.
 Similarly, the Health Score of the retail NBFC sector was consistently below par for the period between 2014 and 2019.
 Larger retail NBFCs had higher Health Scores, but among medium and small retail NBFCs, the medium-size ones had a lower Health Score for the March 2014-March 2019 period, according to the Survey.
 These findings provide an early-warning signal of impending liquidity problems.
 The analysis also finds significant evidence that equity markets react favourably to increase in Health Score of individual HFCs and retail NBFCs, thereby confirming the validity of Health Score as an early-warning signal, it added.
 Further, the pre-Budget Survey observed that the Health Score could be of immense use to policymakers with respect to the shadow banking channel of growth.
 "Health Score can serve the critical role of predicting refinancing-related stress faced by the financial firms in advance. It can serve as an important monitoring mechanism to prevent such problems in future.
 "Furthermore, disaggregating the components and examining their trends can shed light on how to regulate NBFCs," the Survey said.
 It said the Health Score can also be used by policymakers to allocate scarce capital to stressed NBFCs optimally to alleviate a liquidity crisis.
 Also, it can be used to set prudential thresholds on the extent of wholesale funding that can be permitted for firms in the shadow banking system.
 "Regulators can use the Health Score as a basis for optimally directing capital infusions to deserving NBFCs to ensure efficient allocation of scarce capital," it said.
 The payment defaults emanating from IL&amp;FS and DHFL resulted in a chain reaction, adversely affecting the market price of their commercial papers, panic sale by investors in debt mutual funds.
 The defaults also triggered steep decline in net asset value of these debt funds by 53 per cent and a sharp decline in the equity prices of stressed NBFCs, causing huge losses of Rs 4,000 crore to NBFCs.
 "This took a toll on the overall credit growth in the Indian economy, and, in turn, caused a decline in GDP growth," the Survey said.
 The Health Score can be used as a valuable tool to introduce corrective measures to address unfavourable financial trends in a timely manner, said the pre-Budget Survey by the government. KPM HRS

The number of <keyword id="19933600" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="prostate-cancer" source="keywords">prostate cancer</keyword> cases is rising among men aged below 50 years in India, with a more aggressive form of the disease, experts have said, underscoring that it can be managed effectively if identified early as it often grows slowly. September is recognised as Prostate <keyword id="23363213" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cancer-awareness-month" source="keywords">Cancer Awareness Month</keyword> for raising awareness about one of the most common cancers affecting men worldwide. Prostate cancer, which develops in the prostate gland, primarily affects older men, but it is on the rise in younger men in India, with a more aggressive form of the disease, according to the experts. The incidence of prostate cancer in the under-50 age group has increased significantly, they have pointed out. According to the <keyword id="19896311" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Health-Organization" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="World Health Organization" meta.hostid="266" meta.entityid="World Health Organization">World Health Organization</keyword>'s (WHO) figures, prostate cancer affected 37,948 Indian men -- accounting for roughly 3% of the 14 lakh new cancer cases registered in the country -- in 2022. Dr Ashish Gupta, a medical oncologist certified by the American board and the chief of the medical oncology department at the Unique Hospital Cancer Centre in Delhi, said, "<keyword id="20123436" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="early-detection" source="keywords">Early detection</keyword> significantly increases the survival rates as prostate cancer is often slow-growing and can be managed effectively if identified in the initial stages." "The biggest issue in India is late diagnosis," he added. In the United States, 80% of prostate cancer patients are diagnosed early and 20% report it late, Gupta said, adding that the statistics are reversed in India. Through regular PSA tests and check-ups, men can take control of their health and reduce the chances of the disease advancing, he said. Although symptoms are often absent in the early stages, men should be aware of the potential warning signs, including difficulty in urinating, frequent urination (especially at night), blood in the urine or semen and pain in the hips, back or pelvis, he said. The experts have warned against a delay in diagnosis and treatment, given that it can prove to be fatal. Most often, the symptoms of prostate cancer are either ignored or neglected, leading to advanced stages of the disease. "We are observing a rise in prostate cancer cases in young adults, which was earlier associated with adults aged above 50 years. Cancer reports among younger males aged 35 to 44 residing in metropolitan regions have recently increased," Gupta said. Advances in medical technology, including robotic surgeries and precision radiation, have significantly improved the prognosis for prostate cancer patients. However, the fear of being diagnosed, combined with societal pressures on men to stay silent about health issues, prevents many from seeking timely medical advice. Modern treatment methods like immunotherapy, targeted therapy and a combination of radiation therapy and chemotherapy are proving to be an effective treatment option and giving a new lease of life to prostate cancer patients, Gupta said. Dr Tanvi Sood, a medical oncologist at the Paras Hospital in Gurugram, said, "Prostate cancer is increasing in young men around the globe. It is known to be more aggressive in nature and usually diagnosed at an advanced stage. Increased screening may have contributed to increased diagnosis in younger men. However, there could also be a hereditary genetic syndrome causing prostate cancer in the men in a family." Timely diagnosis can help start the right treatment like surgery, hormonal therapy, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy and immunotherapy. It is very important to check for hereditary genetic mutations in all prostate cancer patients, especially young patients, Sood underlined. Gupta concluded that men with a family history of prostate cancer are at a higher risk, especially if someone's father, brother or uncle was diagnosed with the disease. Genetic factors play a role, so those with a family history should consider earlier and more frequent screenings, he added. Healthy lifestyle habits can help reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains, along with regular physical activity, can support prostate health. Reducing red meat and fat intake, along with avoiding smoking, can also help lower the risk, Gupta said. By staying informed, opting for regular screenings and following healthy lifestyle choices, men can significantly reduce the risks associated with prostate cancer, he added.

AI can now detect early stage glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and other eye conditions

A new study is all set to change the course of medical history in the field of <keyword id="6355291" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cancer">cancer</keyword> detection forever, as it has identified roughly 800 biomarkers present in the blood of cancer patients which can be found out through a single blood test, making early detection of cancer a possible reality in the future. 
 
This study is the very first to comprehensively review and identify cancer-specific blood markers for future clinical development. Almost 19,000 scientific papers were analyzed and more than 800 biomarkers were identified. 
This research aimed at using a single blood sample for developing a screening test to identify multiple cancer types. Every type of cancer is known to produce markers in the blood. Therefore, developing a general screening test for many different forms of the disease may be feasible. 
 Study author Ian Cree, a Cancer Research UK funded <keyword id="9662" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Scientist">scientist</keyword> at the <keyword id="193774" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="University-of-Warwick">University of Warwick</keyword> and <keyword id="205015" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="University-Hospital">University Hospital</keyword> in <keyword id="82821" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Coventry">Coventry</keyword> said in a press release, "This is a new approach to early detection and the first time such a systematic review has been done. A single blood-based screening test would be a game changer for early detection of cancer which could help make it a curable disease for many more patients. We believe that we've identified all the relevant biomarkers; the next step is working out which ones work the best for spotting cancers." 
 The research is poised to be presented at the <keyword id="470887" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Cancer-Research-Institute">National Cancer Research Institute</keyword> (NCRI) Cancer Conference.
