India had announced ePassports last year and had claimed that they are compliant with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards and would be harder to destroy. The passport will also come with a digital signature that is unique to each country and can be easily verified using a certificate. The software for the ePassport has been developed by IIT Kanpur and the National Informatics Centre (NIC). The government has given approval to the India Security Press, Nashik for procuring electronic contactless inlays for manufacturing ePassports. The ePassports have been under trial and the government has issued 20,000 official and diplomatic ePassports. The first ePassport in India was issued to the then President of India, Pratibha Patil in 2008. According to officials, if the ePassport is tampered with, the system will be able to identify this, and the passport will not be authenticated. Ministry of External Affairs Secretary Sanjay Bhatttacharyya, in a tweet, emphasised that the passport would be secured with biometric data and will enable smooth passage through immigration posts globally. <div type="javascript" title="Custom" contenttype="Image"><cdata><![CDATA[ ]]></cdata></div> Till now, passports were issued in the form of personalised printed booklets. The Indian government has previously issued 20,000 official and diplomatic e-passports. The passport was embedded with a microchip, which held all vital information related to the passport holder’s biometric data. The e-passport was also enabled security features that will disallow unauthorized data transfer through radio-frequency identification, also known as RFID. While announcing the e-passport last year, the Ministry of External Affairs had mentioned that the e-passport would be harder to destroy and be compliant with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards. The government had previously decided to start issuing e-passport in 2021, but it was delayed. It is important to note that the process of applying for the passport would continue to be the same. Users would still have to file out an application form on the government website and select a date of appointment for document verification. The issuance time too will also not be affected by the new system. Indians will soon be able to carry e-passports while travelling

Hackers are sending malicious links through comments in <keyword id="6355629" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="google" source="Orion">Google</keyword> apps like Docs and <keyword id="383218" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="slides" source="Orion">Slides</keyword> primarily to <keyword id="23268" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="outlook" source="Orion">Outlook</keyword> users -- a known vulnerability that has not been fully closed or mitigated by Google since last year, cyber-security researchers have warned. According to US-based enterprise cybersecurity company Avanan, hackers are increasingly using <keyword id="300053" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="google-docs" source="Orion">Google Docs</keyword>' productivity features to slip malicious links past spam filters and cyber security tools. In June last year, Avanan reported on an exploit in Google Docs that allowed hackers to easily deliver malicious phishing websites to end-users. Now, hackers have found a new way to do the same thing. "Starting in December 2021, Avanan observed a new, massive wave of hackers leveraging the comment feature in Google Docs, targeting primarily Outlook users," said researcher Jeremy Fuchs. The comment feature across the Google suite has become an attack vector for hackers, he claimed in a report. Avanan said it notified Google of this flaw on January 3, via the report phish through email button within <keyword id="51500" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gmail" source="Orion">Gmail</keyword>. Google was yet to react to the report. In one such attack, hackers add a comment to a Google Doc. The comment mentions the target with an '@'. By doing so, an email is automatically sent to that person's inbox. "In that email, which comes from Google, the full comment, including the bad links and text, is included. Further, the email address isn't shown, just the attackers' name, making this ripe for impersonators," said the report that came out on Thursday. "In this email attack, hackers found a way to leverage Google Docs, and other Google collaboration tools, to send malicious links. We primarily saw it target Outlook users, though not exclusively. It hit over 500 inboxes across 30 tenants, with hackers using over 100 different Gmail accounts," it elaborated. To guard against these attacks, before clicking on Google Docs comments, users should cross-reference the email address in the comment to ensure it's legitimate. "Utilise standard cyber hygiene, including scrutinising links and inspecting grammar and deploy protection that secures the entire suite, including file-sharing and collaboration apps," said the researchers. Hackers are abusing Google Docs to send malicious links, and Google hasn't fixed the vulnerability yet

In peacetime, the app Diia, was meant to be a central hub for citizens' interactions with their government, allowing someone to access their identity cards, pay their taxes, and receive public services.Now, during wartime, the country's Ministry of Digital Transformation has launched a new feature called E-Enemy, over Diia allowing any Ukrainian citizen to inform the army when they spot Russian troops and infantry. "Anyone can help our army locate Russian troops," an update on March 10th by the ministry. "Use our chat bot to inform the Armed Forces," it said. As footage of the invasion flooded social media and <keyword id="11989863" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="telegram" source="Orion">Telegram</keyword>, Ukrainian security forces relied heavily on intelligence gathered over the platforms to find and locate Russian troops. The country's internal affairs ministry even created a preliminary version of the chatbot to source information on Russian troop movements over the app. At least in one instance, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-attack-russian-vehicles-kyiv-telegram-tip-2022-3">government announced intelligence gathered</a> over Telegram helped Ukrainian troops find and destroy enemy convoys near Kyiv. But, according to Slava Banik, director of E-services development at the Ministry of Digital transformation, verification of intelligence took a long time through the previous version and often Russian bots would flood disinformation onto the platform.Diia, according to the Ministry of Digital Transformation, changes that by requiring users to login and authenticate themselves via the e-passport system. "We know for sure it's a real person sending the info and not a Russian bot," Banik told Insider. While users login to E-Enemy through Diia, they are then redirected to a Telegram chatbot that handles that asks users if they are the primary source for the intelligence, alongside basic information about the types of troops, whether they were moving on foot or in vehicles, the number of troops, and the time of contact. Russian troops were entering through Chernihiv, a city close to <keyword id="11985141" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ukraine" source="Orion">Ukraine</keyword>'s border with Belarus. Danylova, who's family friends lived in a village close to where troops were advancing, pleaded with Danylova to find a way to inform Ukrainian troops of the situation. They were unfamiliar with Telegram or how to use chatbots. Danylova found the chatbot and uploaded videos of Russian troops advancing that her friends had taken. "Our friends identified the V marking on the Russian vehicles moving along their villages," Danylova said. To be safe, she also sent the information to a friend that served in the Ukrainian army.Slava Churpita, a bar owner in the country's capital, had a similar experience. She was asked to use the bot by a neighbor, who had just seen possible Russian drones flying over her area. Churpita sent the information provided by the witness, making sure to credit that it was second hand information. But she said, she was ultimately unsure of how useful the information might have been. Ukrainian officials are also hoping the app will be a resource to document war crimes occurring in the country. After Russian soldiers reportedly massacred 400 civilians in Bucha, Ukraine's head of the Ministry of Digital Transformation, Mykhailo Fedorov encouraged witnesses or sources that knew information about the perpetrators of the massacre or other possible war crimes to use the app to report on it."We're confident [the app] is doing its job," Banik said.For now, Diia's Fedorov sees the app as an essential tool to allow everyday Ukrainians to participate in the war effort. "We will find every single one of them," he said on his public Telegram channel. "Technology will help."
