<br /><ul><li><strong>The German car maker had to decline orders for E-Tron cars from India.<br /><br /></strong></li><li><strong>The company had taken 10 Indians to show a physical model of the electric car yet to be launched in India.<br /><br /></strong></li><li><strong>The interest in E-Tron in India has spiked since mid April, just days before the Avengers’ release.<br /><br /></strong></li><li><strong>Audi hopes to launch E-Tron in India by 2020, around the same as Tesla is speculated to bring Model 3 to the South Asian country.<br /></strong></li></ul>Much before Tony Stark, the man behind the Iron Man suit in the Avengers series, <a href="https://www.news18.com/news/auto/iron-man-aka-tony-stark-vehicle-of-choice-in-avengers-endgame-audi-e-tron-gt-2122387.html">drove down in the E-Tron</a> GT, Indians have been trying to get their hands on the coveted Audi’s E-Tron series. <br /><br />E-Tron is Audi’s first fully electric car, and is expected to launch in India by 2020. But the German luxury carmaker took a few Indian customers abroad to see the car, and they were so excited about it that they wanted to buy it. <br /><br />However, the company refused since it was too premature to accept down payment on a car, before they could announce the launch date. <br /><br />“We said this is too premature, we cannot do this at the moment. But that’s a good sign,” Rahil Ansari, Managing Director, Audi India told Business Insider.<br /><strong><br />The Multiplier effect </strong><br /><br />The <keyword id="906440" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Audi-e-tron">Audi E-Tron</keyword> family is a series of electric and hybrid concept cars. The first one came out in 2009. Audi unveiled a plug-in hybrid version, the A3 Sportback E-Tron in 2012, and launched it for retail customers in Europe, in August 2014. <br /><br />A decade after the unveiling of the E-Tron concept, Audi's first fully electric E-Tron Quattro has gone into production this year.<br /><br />“We took only 10 (Indian) customers to Germany to have a look at it. And to get that kind of response already, there’s of course a multiplication effect to. It’s pretty good,” Ansari added.<br /><br /><strong>Production line troubles <br /></strong><br />Audi is reportedly facing troubles in E-Tron production due to <a href="https://insideevs.com/news/345863/audi-e-tron-production-stalls-out-e-tron-sportback-delayed/">shortage of lithium-ion batteries</a>. This could be the reason why they are delaying sales of this futuristic car, which was unveiled amid much fanfare last year.<br /><br />The searches for E-Tron from India have spiked since mid April. Most people want to know the price and launch date for the model.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><strong>The Future is fast <br /></strong><br />Ansari believes that this model that will work well in India. “If you look at the range of the local cars, it’s typically between 90 and 120 kilometres (per charge). Maybe, in the future, it will be 200-250 kilometres. But the E-Tron has already surpassed this,” he said.  According to Audi, the E-Tron will be able to offer 400 kilometres per charge.<br /><br />While there are people keen on E-Tron, Indians will have a lot more to choose from. <a href="https://www.cartoq.com/tesla-coming-to-india-in-2019-elon-musk-confirms-india-entry-soon/">Elon Musk is launching his electric car, Tesla in India</a> very soon. Reports say that the Model 3 will be launched in India by 2020, clashing with Audi’s E-Tron launch. <br /><br />Recent reports rank Tesla’s Model 3, which is much older than the upcoming E-Tron, as more <a href="https://seekingalpha.com/article/4262289-teslas-2012-model-s-61-percent-efficient-audis-new-e-tron">fuel efficient</a>. This is something that could affect the Indian psyche. Audi claims it had to decline bookings for E-Tron from India even before Iron Man showed up in it

<ul class="summary-list"><li>I drove <keyword id="6363321" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="audi">Audi</keyword>'s upcoming flagship EV: the 2022 RS E-Tron GT. </li><li>It was a thrilling and sometimes terrifying first experience driving an electric car. </li><li>The 637-horsepower RS E-Tron GT starts at $139,900 and goes on sale this summer. </li></ul><p>In the days and hours leading up to my drive in the 2022 Audi RS E-Tron GT, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGcIFgAzJR8">a viral clip of a Porsche Taycan crash</a> played on repeat in my head. </p><p>The grainy video shows a $100,000-plus Porsche EV pull into a driveway and stop for a moment before abruptly launching full bore into another car, off a ledge, and onto a street-parked SUV. As my date with one of Germany's quickest and most advanced <keyword id="6354973" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="electric-vehicles">electric vehicles</keyword> - a close cousin to the Taycan - drew nearer, I was certain I'd meed a similar fate. </p><p>You see, when Audi invited me to drive its <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/audi-e-tron-gt-electric-sedan-performance-horsepower-specs-2021-2">upcoming flagship EV</a> for around an hour earlier this month, I had never been behind the wheel of an electric car before. Moreover, I had never piloted a speed demon like the 637-horsepower RS E-Tron GT, which starts at $139,900, or its equally sporty Porsche relative.</p><p>And if that unfortunate Taycan video taught me anything, it's that in the wrong - or even just the distracted - hands, high-performance EVs can become a bit like a rocket ship in the hands of a toddler. </p><div type="image" title="Audi RS E-Tron GT" height="1561" width="2500" msid="82880741" hostid="261"></div><p>Seeing as I write about <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="transportation">transportation</keyword> and EVs for a living, I knew that from <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kia-niro-ev-review-electric-car-range-price-specs-photos-2020-5">commuter Kias</a> to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-model-3-performance-first-drive-2018-8">sporty Teslas</a>, <keyword id="6358835" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Electric-cars">electric cars</keyword> deliver near-instantaneous, gut-punching acceleration unlike any gas-powered vehicle - and they do so without the auditory and tactile cues of a combustion engine, given that EVs' elasticky pedals are met with near-silent acceleration. That likely factored into the ill-fated Taycan's trip over a nearby ledge.</p><p>I also knew the RS E-Tron GT's 637 peak horsepower and 612 pound-feet of torque is an awful lot, and that the four-door sedan's promised ability to hit 60 mph in 3.1 seconds puts it firmly in supercar territory. But I'd never experienced such things for myself and I wasn't sure what to expect.</p><div type="image" title="Audi RS E-Tron GT" height="1661" width="2500" msid="82880743" hostid="261"></div><p>With some words of encouragement from my colleagues, I decided to go for it. "Don't drive it off a cliff," one staff transportation editor wise beyond her years told me.</p><p>My fears weren't exactly alleviated when I arrived at the location and saw I'd embark on my guided drive from a mountaintop home, which meant I'd have to start out by navigating down a steep, narrow drive with lots of tight twists and turns. It was the perfect setting for a viral video titled "IDIOT JOURNALIST WRECKS $140K AUDI [LOST HIS JOB &amp; DIGNITY]." </p><p>I set off at low speeds, trying to ease my fears and my potential to go viral. But the Audi stepped in where I lacked - its smooth power delivery was manageable and not at all jerky, even if I struggled a bit to see the road over the sedan's long hood from its low seating position. Still, I tackled the descent without smashing into a tree or launching myself off the side of the mountain, which I chalked up to a victory. </p><div type="image" title="Audi RS E-Tron GT" height="1710" width="2500" msid="82880745" hostid="261"></div><p>The real test, however, would be whether I could graduate to more normal speeds without wrapping this $140,000 car I didn't own around a guardrail.</p><p>Once I turned onto the main road, I went for it. After putting my foot down a few times, my jitters morphed into a kind of unhinged glee. As someone whose typical means of transportation are a bike and a 30-year-old Volvo that's only slightly faster than said bike, the E-Tron GT's raw speed and brutal torque - overwhelming as it was - had me downright giddy. I was in a rocket ship, but I somehow felt like I had control over it.</p><div type="image" title="Audi RS E-Tron GT" height="1919" width="2500" msid="82880747" hostid="261"></div><p>When you give a traditional car some gas, you can feel it gradually rumble up to speed, hear the engine rev up to higher RPMs. But there's none of that buildup in the E-Tron GT - or in any other EV. The car immediately leaps forward with each press of the pedal, and there's no noise accompanying that motion aside from an artificial, futuristic whine that Audi pumps in through the speakers.</p><p>I cackled as every nudge of the accelerator rocketed the car forward and threw me back into my seat. I was a kid in a candy store, and that candy store was hurtling down the freeway at breakneck speeds. </p><div type="image" title="Audi RS E-Tron GT" height="1582" width="2500" msid="82880749" hostid="261"></div><p>By the halfway point of my drive, I was feeling reasonably at home in the RS E-Tron GT. I switched it from "Comfort" mode to "Dynamic" - Audi's name for a sporty setting - and began pushing the car harder, taking turns a bit faster. My hands, balled up in a sweaty death grip for much of the drive, relaxed a bit (but remained sweaty) as I got more comfortable.</p><p>The acceleration, as alien and utterly ridiculous as it was, seemed almost manageable after a time because it was predictable and consistent. And the all-wheel-drive E-Tron GT felt planted and grippy carving around the Hudson Valley's twisty mountain roads, giving me the confidence to stomp the accelerator where appropriate. </p><p>Slowing down to take a tight turn was never an issue thanks to the car's solid brakes and regenerative-braking system, a common feature in EVs. In an EV or hybrid, regenerative braking starts slowing the car down as soon as your foot is off the accelerator to capture energy and feed it back to the battery as a form of charging. </p><div type="image" title="Audi RS E-Tron GT" height="1667" width="2500" msid="82880752" hostid="261"></div><p>But I didn't need to drive all that fast to have an absolute blast in the E-Tron GT. The instant, always-available torque that's present in most EVs - but is dialed up many, many notches in the Audi - meant I had loads of fun putting my foot down at nearly any speed. I'm told that's helped by the sedan's two-speed transmission, something you can't find in any other current EV aside from the Taycan. </p><p>When I did want to open it up, the E-Tron GT's head-up display, which projects your speed onto the windshield in front of you, proved mighty useful. Given the car's ability to go from mildly speeding to full-on reckless endangerment in a matter of seconds, being able to check my speed without looking away from the road was a welcome feature.</p><div type="image" title="Audi RS E-Tron GT" height="1707" width="2500" msid="82880754" hostid="261"></div><p>As my drive came to a close, I was less concerned about smashing the six-figure luxury tourer to bits and more bummed out that I, a mere scribe, will likely never, ever own one. But electric cars are getting cheaper fast, and driving the E-Tron GT helped me understand firsthand why some of their owners are so excited about making the switch from dinosaur goo to battery power. </p><p>Even considering the troubles of charging and taking long trips, the appeal of a quick EV that spices up a morning commute or grocery run is undeniable - if you appreciate that sort of thing. And, from a more practical perspective, having enough electric torque on tap to overtake a truck or a weaving driver at a moment's notice is nice too. Those advantages, plus a more sustainable power source, make EVs all the more attractive. </p><div type="image" title="Audi RS E-Tron GT" height="1667" width="2500" msid="82880759" hostid="261"></div><p>But for now, I'll make do with my bike, my dusty old station wagon, and hopefully the occasional afternoon with something a bit more exciting. Mercedes-Benz plans to <a href="https://media.daimler.com/marsMediaSite/en/instance/ko/Plans-for-more-than-ten-different-all-electric-vehicles-by-2022-All-systems-are-go.xhtml?oid=29779739">release</a> more than 10 electric vehicles by 2022.</p><p>Sales of luxury electric SUVs by Jaguar and Audi have been weak in the US this year, according to <a href="https://insideevs.com/news/343998/monthly-plug-in-ev-sales-scorecard/">InsideEVs</a>. Through November, the website reported that Jaguar has sold 2,418 I-Pace vehicles, while Audi has sold 4,623 e-tron SUVs. Tesla sold 13,725 Model X SUVs in the US through September, according to InsideEVs. Mercedes-Benz is delaying the US release of its Tesla rival by a year

Stadler is the highest-ranking Volkswagen employee to be arrested as a result of the devices. On Tuesday, Audi sales head Abraham Schot was named the company's interim CEO.</p><p>Like the rest of the auto industry, Audi is on the verge of a significant shift toward electric vehicles.</p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Audi will release its first, fully-electric vehicle, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/electric-suvs-coming-to-market-soon-2018-4#audis-e-tron-quattro-is-expected-to-debut-in-europe-later-this-year-before-coming-to-the-us-in-2019-5">e-tron Quattro</a> SUV, in Europe later this year and in the United States in early 2019. The company plans to introduce a sportback version of the e-tron in 2019, as well as an electric sports car, compact car, and grand tourer in the coming years. By 2021, the company plans to introduce hybrid technology into all of its core models. And by 2025, Audi plans to spend over $46 billion on electrification, autonomy, and digitization, and offer electrified options for all of its vehicles.</span></p><p>According to Edmunds senior analyst Ivan Drury, Stadler's arrest won't derail those plans.</p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"Audi's push for electrification through its niche e-tron lineup has persisted for years," he said in an email to Business Insider. "While the arrest of CEO Rupert Stadler is sure to cause some hiccups in the short-term, the long-term strategy stays the same, regardless of who is in charge."</span></p><p>Autotrader executive analyst Michelle Krebs said Audi was likely aware of the possibility that Stadler could be arrested and planned for it.</p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"I don't think this changes their course as a company at all," she told Business Insider. "The possibility that this arrest could happen I think was probably baked into the mix. I don't think it came as a shock."</span></p><p>In 2015, Volkswagen admitted to installing devices in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/volkswagen-dieselgate-scandal-billions-of-dollars-paid-whats-next-2017-9">around 11 million vehicles</a> that allowed the vehicles to expel lower emissions during government-mandated tests than they would on the road. The downfall of Audi's CEO won't affect the company's plans to take on Tesla, experts say

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="6361865" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="volkswagen">Volkswagen</keyword> CEO Herbert <keyword id="336697" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Diess">Diess</keyword> used his first tweet to troll rival CEO Elon <keyword id="364027" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Musk">Musk</keyword>.</li><li>Diess told Musk he was on <keyword id="6354616" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Twitter">Twitter</keyword> to get "some of your market shares." </li><li>A Volkswagen spokesperson told <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2021/01/21/business/vw-ceo-herbert-diess-tweet-trolls-elon-musk/index.html">CNN</a> the two executives "respect each other."</li></ul><p>Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess this week used his first tweet to troll rival chief executive Elon Musk, who has a massive following on the site. </p><p>"I'm here to make an impact with @VWGroup, especially on political issues," wrote Diess on Wednesday. </p><p>He added: "And, of course, to get some of your market shares, @elonmusk - after all, our ID.3 and e-tron have won the first markets in Europe. Looking forward to productive discussions!"</p><p>The two companies compete on electric vehicles, but publicly have had a mostly friendly relationship.</p><p>The two CEOs "have a good relationship and respect each other," a Volkswagen spokesperson told <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2021/01/21/business/vw-ceo-herbert-diess-tweet-trolls-elon-musk/index.html">CNN Business</a> on Thursday. </p><p>In September, Musk <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/volkswagen-osterloh-musk-tesla-electric-cars-sales-2023-2020-9">met with Volkswagen executives</a> in Germany, where he test drove one of the company's electric vehicles.</p><p>At the time, a Volkswagen executive said the German company planned to make between <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/volkswagen-osterloh-musk-tesla-electric-cars-sales-2023-2020-9">900,000 and 1.5 million</a> electric vehicles a year. He has as many followers as <a href="https://twitter.com/nasa">NASA</a>, but still fewer than <a href="https://twitter.com/billgates">Bill Gates</a>, who has 53 million. Diess had about 16,000 followers as of Friday morning. </p><p>Diess's Twitter account was created in December 2020, but his first post went up on Wednesday.  </p><p>Diess's Twitter feed so far hasn't been anything like Musk's, which has long been home to obscure memes, inside jokes, and a host of other posts that most <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/tesla-stock-price-reaction-sp500-index-inclusion-5th-largest-tsla-2020-12-1029910902">S&amp;P 500 CEOs</a> wouldn't dare share. </p><p>This month alone, Musk has tweeted one liners like "<a href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1349286488618491904">Legalize comedy"</a> and <a href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1347165127036977153?lang=en">"Use Signal,"</a> along with <a href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1349466269121179653?s=20">a meme about sea shanties</a>. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Dozens upon dozens of <keyword id="6358835" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Electric-cars">electric cars</keyword> are set to flood the market in coming years. </li><li>New EVs are coming from startups like Lucid, Rivian, and Canoo, along with legacy OEMs like <keyword id="6355174" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ford">Ford</keyword>. </li><li>By 2023, everything from supercars to offroad pickups will have a battery-powered option. </li></ul><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cycling-boom-us-streets-infrastructure-bike-lanes-history-united-states-2020-12">Gas-powered cars have ruled the roads</a> for more than a century - but <keyword id="6354973" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="electric-vehicles">electric vehicles</keyword> are about to have their day. </p><p>Today, climate-conscious shoppers can choose from dozens of partially or fully electric models. But the number of EVs on the market is set to skyrocket in coming years as startups mature and as traditional automakers double down on the growing space. </p><p><keyword id="4581" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="general-motors">General Motors</keyword> alone plans to have 30 electric models in showrooms by 2025. But plenty of interesting new EVs will be on sale much sooner than that. </p><p>Check out some of the coolest EVs hitting the market by 2023 - along with their expected arrival dates - below.</p><h2>Audi E-Tron GT (2021)</h2><div type="image" title="Audi E-Tron GT" height="1668" width="2500" msid="81617802" hostid="261"></div><p>Audi has talked up the E-Tron GT for a while now - and it showed off a concept version in "Avengers: Endgame" - but finally <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/audi-e-tron-gt-electric-sedan-performance-horsepower-specs-2021-2">unveiled the real thing</a> in February. </p><p>It starts at roughly $100,000 for the base model, which puts out 469 horsepower and has a range of 238 miles. The $140,000 high-performance RS version generates 590 horsepower and hits 60 mph in 3.1 seconds, Audi says. </p><p>The car hits US dealerships this summer. </p><h2><keyword id="6355119" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="bmw">BMW</keyword> i4 (2021)</h2><div type="image" title="BMW i4." height="1668" width="2500" msid="81617803" hostid="261"></div><p>BMW may be a bit behind the times with its "i" prefix that, once upon a time, was attached to anything techy. But <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bmw-i4-ev-sedan-range-specs-horsepower-2021-3">the i4</a> still bodes well for BMW's electric future.  </p><p>The German brand's first electric sedan, the i4 will have an EPA-estimated range of 300 miles and will put out up to 530 horsepower, according to BMW. There will also be a performance model. </p><p>The i4 goes on sale this year. </p><h2>BMW iX (2022)</h2><div type="image" title="BMW iX" height="1667" width="2500" msid="81617804" hostid="261"></div><p>BMW is also developing an X5-sized electric SUV that's set to enter production in late 2021 and arrive at dealers in early 2022. Delivering more than 300 miles of range and 500 horsepower in its top trim, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bmw-ix-electric-suv-first-look-photos-specs-details-2020-11">the iX</a> will be BMW's flagship EV. </p><p>In Germany, the SUV will start at roughly $92,000, but there's no word on US pricing yet. </p><h2>Bollinger B1/B2 (2022)</h2><div type="image" title="4 Bollinger Motors B1 3 4 studio" height="1498" width="2000" msid="81617806" hostid="261"></div><p>Michigan-based EV startup Bollinger Motors somehow managed to develop a cutting-edge electric truck that still keeps things old school.</p><p>The firm plans to sell an SUV, the B1, and a pickup, the B2, that have utilitarian looks, exposed rivets, and manual switches of offroaders from a bygone era. But the vehicles still pack a modern punch - Bollinger says they'll produce 614 horsepower and 668 lb-ft of torque. </p><p>The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bollinger-ev-startup-suv-pickup-b1-b2-updated-design-2020-12">B1 and B2</a> cost $125,000 and deliveries are set to begin in 2022. </p><h2>Cadillac Lyriq (2022)</h2><div type="image" title="Cadillac Lyriq" height="825" width="1102" msid="81617807" hostid="261"></div><p>Cadillac is set to become GM's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gm-bullish-outlook-plans-to-take-on-tesla-with-cadillac-2019-1">flagship electric brand</a>, and its first EV is just over the horizon. The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cadillac-just-unveiled-its-lyriq-electric-car-2020-8">Lyriq</a>, unveiled last summer in concept form, will be one of the first vehicles to use GM's Ultium battery tech when it hits US dealerships in 2022. </p><p>Details are still scarce, but GM has said the crossover will come in rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions, and that it will deliver at least 300 miles of range. It will cost between $75,000 and $100,000 to start, GM said. </p><h2>Canoo pickup truck (2023)</h2><div type="image" title="Canoo pickup truck" height="1080" width="1440" msid="81617808" hostid="261"></div><p>EV startup Canoo's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/canoo-ev-pickup-truck-first-look-features-specs-2021-3">upcoming pickup</a> is unlike anything on the road today. The pod-shaped truck features a host of useful built-in features like fold-out work surfaces, a bed extender, power outlets galore, and a customizable rear seating area.</p><p>Canoo is targeting the truck at businesses, but it's also positioning it as the ultimate adventure vehicle. Various camper shells and roof racks will be available once the truck hits the market. Preorders will open up in late 2021. </p><h2>Ford F-150 Electric (2022)</h2><div type="image" title="2021_F 150 Raptor_05" height="1511" width="2500" msid="81617809" hostid="261"></div><p>The Ford F-150 isn't just the best-selling pickup truck in the US, it's been the nation's most popular vehicle overall for more than four decades. And come 2022, it's getting an electric version. </p><p>Ford has already teased the F-150 EV with gimmicky stunts like a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXFHgoon7lg">video</a> showing a prototype towing a freight train loaded up with 1 million pounds. The Blue Oval has said the F-150 EV will be powered by a dual-motor setup but hasn't released many details beyond that. </p><h2>GMC Hummer EV (2021)</h2><div type="image" title="2022 GMC HUMMER EV 002" height="1477" width="1969" msid="81617811" hostid="261"></div><p>GM resurrected the Hummer name for its much-hyped electric pickup truck, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gmc-hummer-ev-electric-pickup-truck-photos-features-specs-2020-10">2022 GMC Hummer EV</a>. GMC calls the model a "supertruck" and says it will offer 1,000 horsepower and 350 miles of range. The $112,595 <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/2022-hummer-ev-edition-1-coolest-features-gmc-electric-pickup-2020-10">"Edition 1" model</a> will be available to reservation holders this fall, with a handful of other trim levels to follow. </p><h2>Lucid Air (2021)</h2><div type="image" title="Lucid Air exterior_3" height="1620" width="2160" msid="81617812" hostid="261"></div><p>The Air will be the first production vehicle out of Lucid, an upstart EV maker that's staffed by former <keyword id="107096" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Tesla">Tesla</keyword> engineers and run by the man who led Tesla's Model S project.</p><p>With an EPA-estimated range of up to 517 miles and a base price of under $70,000, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lucids-ceo-rawlinson-electric-sedan-suv-crazed-market-2021-3?r=tl-sub">luxury sedan</a> takes direct aim at the Model S. And it appears to have Elon Musk and Tesla shaking in their boots. The same day that Lucid announced its base sedan would cost $69,900 after federal tax incentives, Musk <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-tesla-model-s-price-cut-lucid-unveils-air-2020-10">changed the price</a> of the Model S to undercut it by just a few hundred dollars. </p><h2>Lucid SUV (2023)</h2><div type="image" title="Lucid Motors Project Gravity_3" height="1667" width="2500" msid="81617814" hostid="261"></div><p>Taking a page out of Tesla's playbook, Lucid plans to build a crossover following the launch of its debut luxury sedan. </p><p>Lucid hasn't said much about its future family-hauler, dubbed <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lucid-motors-project-gravity-electric-suv-available-2023-air-ev-2020-9">Project Gravity</a>, but claims it will offer loads of interior space and will "redefine the luxury SUV." But the German luxury brand plans to start building a battery-powered version of its best-selling model, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/porsche-macan-suv-electric-confirmed-2019-2">Macan crossover</a>, by the end of 2022. An electric Cayman and Boxster are on the way as well, but Porsche has no plans to produce a zero-emission version of its flagship 911 sports car anytime soon. </p><h2>Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo (2021)</h2><div type="image" title="2021 Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo._21" height="1667" width="2500" msid="81617816" hostid="261"></div><p>The electron-powered Macan is still a long way away, but EV buyers who desire nothing less than an electric Porsche with some utility and ample cargo capacity may find what they're looking for in the upcoming <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/porsche-taycan-4s-turbo-s-cross-turismo-ev-wagon-ebikes-2021-3">Taycan Cross Turismo</a>. </p><p>It's the station wagon version of the brand's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/porsche-taycan-4s-review-0-60-price-range-ev-electric-2020-11">Taycan sedan</a>, and Porsche gave it a bit of extra trunk space, more ground clearance, and standard all-wheel drive. The Taycan Cross Turismo starts at $90,900 and hits US dealerships this summer. </p><h2>Rivian R1T/R1S (2021)</h2><div type="image" title="Rivian R1S" height="1120" width="1494" msid="81617817" hostid="261"></div><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-rivian-ev-startup-amazon-backed-tesla-challenger-2021-2">Rivian</a> is a California-based EV startup that has been developing vehicles since 2009 and has emerged as one of the most promising Tesla rivals. It's set to start delivering its first R1T pickups and R1S SUVs this summer. </p><p>The upstart is taking aim at the outdoorsy crowd with its high-end vehicles that will offer a range of up to 400 miles, up to 750 horsepower, and innovative features like a "gear tunnel" that can fit a slide-out camping kitchen. </p><p>Base versions of the R1T and R1S are due out in 2022 and will start at $67,500 and $70,000, respectively. </p><h2>Tesla Cybertruck (2022)</h2><div type="image" title="Cybertruck" height="696" width="1235" msid="81617818" hostid="261"></div><p>According to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, the long-anticipated Cybertruck has been fully developed and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-cybertruck-elon-musk-engineering-finished-deliveries-maybe-this-year-2021-1">deliveries may start in late 2021</a>. However, he said, the more likely scenario is that mass production will begin in 2022. </p><p>The polarizing pickup, unveiled at a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-cybertruck-pickup-trucks-coolest-features-2019-11">splashy event</a> in 2019, will have a 500-mile range and a 0-60-mph time of under three seconds in its top configuration, Tesla says. It will have a built-in bed cover, a slide-out ramp, and a bulletproof body made from stainless steel. </p><p>Tesla says the Cybertruck will eventually come in single, dual, and triple-motor versions and will have a starting price under $40,000. </p><h2>Tesla Roadster (2022)</h2><div type="image" title="Tesla Roadster." height="1604" width="2854" msid="81617819" hostid="261"></div><p>Elon Musk said the upcoming Roadster would be the "fastest production car ever made, period," when it was <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-tesla-roadster-2017-2017-11">unveiled</a> in 2017. Tesla promises that the supercar will be capable of speeds exceeding 250 mph and will have a range of 620 miles - more than any EV on the market today. It'll make the sprint to 60 mph in a blistering 1.9 seconds and hit 100 mph in 4.2 seconds, Tesla says. </p><p>But for it to do all of those impressive things it needs to get here first. Tesla initially said the $250,000 "Founders Series" Roadster would arrive in 2020, but Musk <a href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1354869981146738693">said</a> in January that production would need to wait until 2022. </p><h2>Volkswagen ID.Buzz (2023)</h2><div type="image" title="VW ID Buzz concept" height="1667" width="2500" msid="81617820" hostid="261"></div><p>Volkswagen made a splash in 2017 when it <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vw-volkswagen-microbus-coming-2022-2017-8">announced</a> plans to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vw-microbus-launching-in-2022-will-have-big-updates-2018-1">bring back its iconic Microbus</a> as an EV. It's not known exactly what the van will look like when it hits streets, but VW did build a concept vehicle (shown above). </p><p>We don't know all the details of the ID.Buzz quite yet, but the carmaker said it will be based on the same EV platform that underpins VW's ID.4 and ID.3 models. </p><p>Although the ID.Buzz was initially slated to hit the market in 2022, Volkswagen of America CEO Scott Keogh told <a href="https://www.autonews.com/cars-concepts/vws-keogh-id-buzz-reactions-been-huge">Automotive News</a> in January that the project has been pushed to 2023. </p>

The automaker says its 80kWh battery will provide up to 200 miles of range and will be able to charge from 10% to 80% capacity in 40 minutes when using a DC fast charger. </p><p>The EQC's estimated range is lower than the stated ranges from upcoming competitors like the Jaguar I-Pace (up to 240 miles) and Audi e-tron (over 248 miles), which are expected to arrive at US dealerships later this year and in 2019, respectively. The maximum range for a Tesla Model X is 295 miles. </p><p>The EQC will also include Mercedes-Benz's new user interface, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mercedes-benz-reveals-interface-with-3d-display-2018-1">MBUX</a> (Mercedes-Benz User Experience), which features a digital instrument panel and touchscreen. Mercedes-Benz says the interface will be able to learn and predict driver tendencies, like frequent destinations and radio station choices, and make suggestions based on them.</p><p>Drivers will be able to control many of the vehicle's settings with voice control, which the automaker says will be able to infer requests from a wide range of voice prompts. For example, if a driver or passenger says the car is too cold, the vehicle will increase its temperature.</p><p>The vehicle will have semi-autonomous driver-assistance features that will be able to control the vehicle's speed in heavy traffic, provide steering assistance, and brake to avoid or limit the damage from a collision, according to Mercedes-Benz.</p><p>Production for the EQC will begin in 2019 in Bremen, Germany.</p><p>After the EQC, Mercedes-Benz will release an electric sedan. Tony Stark Will Drive Audi's Electric Supercar In 'Iron Man 3'

<p><strong>1. Diesel is no longer dirty or loud.</strong></p>
<p>Thanks to new engine technology and the mandatory transition to ultra-low sulfur diesel, today's diesel <keyword id="20632" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Cars">cars</keyword> run quietly, and don’t spew black smoke all over the road.</p>
<p><strong>2. More power. </strong></p>
<p>There’s a reason trucks run on diesel: The fuel provides more torque, which means more towing power and more power off the line. Audi’s new 3-liter TDI diesel engine (used in the A6 and A7) produces 428 pound-feet of torque. The 3-liter TFSI gasoline engine generates 325 pound-feet.</p>
<p><strong>3. Germans do it.</strong></p>
<p>In 2011, diesel car sales made up for 51.8% of the European market, <a href="http://www1.eere.energy.gov/vehiclesandfuels/facts/2012_fotw716.html" target="_blank">according to the U.S. Department of Energy</a>. In Germany, 41.9% of cars sold that year ran on diesel. If nearly half of German car buyers — who have access to the Autobahn — are willing to give up on gas, Americans should consider following suit.</p>
<p><strong>4. Diesel cars hold their value better than gasoline cars. </strong></p>
<p>According <a href="https://www.alg.com/the-diesels-are-coming/" target="_blank">to research firm ALG</a>, compact diesels held 63% of their value after 36 months. For gasoline cars, the number was 53%. Hybrids, 55%.</p>
<p>Alec Gutierrez, a senior market analyst at KBB, said that’s partly because there are fewer diesel cars on the market, so used ones command higher prices. They are also “tremendously fuel efficient,” Gutierrez said, a big selling point when gas prices are so high. “Demand is outpacing supply,” he noted.</p>
<p><strong>5. The EPA doesn’t overestimate their efficiency.</strong></p>
<p>Last week, Ford (voluntarily) <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ford-lowers-mpg-claims-for-c-max-hybrid-2013-8" target="_blank">dropped its estimated fuel economy for the C-Max Hybrid</a> to 43 mpg, after EPA testing showed it didn’t meet the claimed 47 mpg mark. In March, some C-Max and Ford Fusion Hybrid owners <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ford-is-being-sued-over-high-fuel-economy-claims-2013-3" target="_blank">filed a class-action lawsuit against the automaker</a>, claiming they had been cheated by false mileage claims.</p>
<p>But when we test drove three of Audi’s new diesel models (the A6, A7, and Q5), we beat the EPA’s estimate each time — and by nearly 10 mpg on the A7.</p>

<p><strong>6. You go to the pump a lot less often.</strong></p>
<p>Diesel may cost more than regular gasoline (about $0.24 more per gallon, <a href="http://fuelgaugereport.aaa.com/?redirectto=http://fuelgaugereport.opisnet.com/index.asp" target="_blank">per AAA’s current figures</a>) but it’s much richer in energy — between 25% and 30% richer. The new BMW 328d (d for diesel) gets better mileage than the gas-powered Smart fortwo coupe. And it produces 180 horsepower, compared to the Smart’s measly 70.</p>
<p><strong>7. If you’re buying a fancy car, diesel fuel isn’t actually more expensive.</strong></p>
<p>The current national average price for premium gasoline is $3.866/gallon. For diesel, it’s $3.876/gallon. So for anyone driving a luxury ride, gas costs just as much, and you need a lot more of it.</p>
<p><strong>8. The price premium over a gasoline car is lower than for a hybrid or electric car.</strong></p>
<p>Per figures from LMC Automotive, cars running on diesel cost $2,500 more than the cars with a gasoline internal combustion engine, on average. For a hybrid, the difference is $4,100. For a fully electric car, it’s $13,000.</p>
<p>All three types of vehicles will save you money on gas, but you'll overpay the least for the diesel.</p>
<p><strong>9. It’s easy to find a place to fill up.</strong></p>
<p>The big problem with electric cars is that the public charging infrastructure is just beginning to be built. But because diesel has been a common fuel for trucks for decades, it’s available at more than 50% of American gas stations.</p>
<p><strong>10. Diesels win the 24 Hours of Le Mans.</strong></p>
<p>Since 2006, every car to win the famous endurance race — the Audi R10 TDI, Peugeot 908 HDi FAP, Audi R15 TDI plus, Audi R18 TDI, and Audi R18 e-tron quattro — burned diesel on the way to first place.</p>
