Mumbai, Jul 6 () Ampere Vehicles, the electric arm of Greaves Cotton, on Monday announced the acquisition of Noida-based e-rickshaw firm Bestway Agencies (BAPL) with a 74 per cent stake. Bestway sells e-rickshaws under the ELE brand with a strong B2C presence in the mass market passenger segment. Through this acquisition, Ampere will expand its presence in this fast disrupting segment to become an integrated last-mile e-mobility player with strong presence in both electric two- and three-wheelers, Ampere vehicles said in a release. "With the acquisition of Bestway, Ampere has now embarked on a new journey to provide clean, safe and sustainable shared mobility solutions through e-3wheeler and become a leading player in the country's EV ecosystem," said Ampere Vehicles Chairman B V R Subbu. The acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions, the company said. E-rickshaw is one of the largest and fastest-growing categories of EVs in the country, and Ampere foresees growth in this segment, it said. In addition to the business-to-customer (B2C) segment, with this acquisition, Ampere will also be able to offer a complete product portfolio to its business-to-business (B2B) customers who have requirements for e-3 wheelers as well for both people and cargo mobility, the company said. "This acquisition will further strengthen our relationship with the domestic consumer by adding last-mile mobility products and services for uninterrupted journey, enhancing productivity across E-2W and E-3W spectrum," Nagesh Basavanhalli, MD and CEO of Greaves Cotton Ltd and director of Ampere Vehicles, said. He said combining Ampere's and Bestway's expertise will help in further boosting the company's growth and strengthen market positioning as a leading e-mobility business in India. The first <keyword id="3311609" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ola-e-rickshaw">Ola E-rickshaw</keyword> will be booked by Prime Minister <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Narendra+Modi&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Narendra Modi</a> at the launch of the ‘<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Stand-Up+India&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Stand-Up India</a>’ initiative. The service is set to be operational from next week. 
 
The company plans to deploy around 5,100 e-rickshaws in total with approx 1,000 each across Delhi, Noida, Faridabad, Gurgaon and Ghaziabad. This will happen in partnership with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Bhartiya+Micro+Credit&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Bhartiya Micro Credit</a> (BMC). 
 When asked why the company started with the nation’s capital, <keyword id="6354720" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Ola">Ola</keyword> Spokesperson <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Anand+Subramanian&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Anand Subramanian</a> said, “While Delhi may be pretty well-connected, a Ghaziabad or Faridabad may be lacking in last mile delivery options. We’re bringing that option to smaller cities.” 
 
Ola maintains the model will be further scaled up in the coming months to more small towns and tier III cities across the country. Driver partners will pay Ola 10% commission for being on the platform. 
 
The fact is over 60% of India’s population is residing in small towns across the country, and there are over 5 million cycle rickshaws across India. While the potential might seem huge, the big question is if Ola’s tariff of Rs. 25 for the first 2 kilometers will help tap into a market dominated primarily by unorganized hyper-local shared e-rickshaw services. 
 
Enabling <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=ride-sharing&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">ride-sharing</a> might reduce fares to 30-40% of the current costs. However, Ola COO <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Pranay+Jivrajka&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Pranay Jivrajka</a> says that might take a while, “Sharing is a little complicated. The idea is to firstly equip them (e-rickshaw drivers) with technological solutions. As we see confidence in driver partners, we’ll go as far as soon as possible.” 
Simply put, ride-sharing for e-rickshaws will take a while. 
 
Anand explains, “Sharing is also a question of scale. It has taken us considerable time, understanding and necessary scale to create a ride-sharing model for cabs. For e-rickshaws the use-case and user demographics are different.” 
Will the ‘online taxi aggregator’ model work in a hyper-local market where money is king, and cheaper is better? That’s what we’ll have to wait and watch.

Ola’s E-Rickshaws – will it work?

Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> has condemned the killing of an e-rickshaw driver in Delhi who had stopped two men from urinating in public. PM has directed the authorities to punish the culprits, and has also sanctioned Rs.1 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund as ex-gratia to the deceased’s family. As per an official spokesman, <keyword id="224684" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ravindra-Kumar">Ravindra Kumar</keyword>, a 32-year-old e-rickshaw driver was beaten to death by a dozen people after he stopped two of them from urinating in pubic advocating the ‘<keyword id="2597503" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Swachha-Bharat-Abhiyan">Swachha Bharat Abhiyan</keyword>’. The incident took place outside the GTB Nagar Metro Station. "The prime Minister condemned the incident and directed the authorities to bring to book and punish the culprits for committing such inhuman act," the spokesman added. Kumar was beaten to death last night allegedly by a dozen men after he objected to two of them urinating, according to the police. The assaulters had consumed liquor bought from a nearby shop and were urinating at the gate of the metro station. Modi condemns killing of e-rickshaw driver for opposing public urination; directs authorities for strict action

NEW DELHI: Environmentalists and public transport experts are relieved that the Centre has proposed draft guidelines to regulate <keyword id="6403560" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="e-rickshaws">e-rickshaws</keyword> under the Motor Vehicles Act. E-rickshaws may have been in the news for all the wrong reasons, but many believe these had the potential to solve the city’s last-mile connectivity problem. 
 
Similar paratransit modes are successfully regulated all over the world. Even cycle-rickshaws are regulated and have a licensing mechanism overseen by the municipal corporations. Pedicabs are regulated in most cities in the US and Europe—Philadelphia City Council mandates pedicabs utilize permitted streets, do not operate after dusk or on the sidewalk, and never board or de-board passengers from a roadway travel lane. 
 
In Philippines, tricycles are regulated by the transport department. Its government now plans to put electric tricycles—similar to Delhi’s e-rickshaws—on the road to address the issue of air pollution. It has recently released Peso 505.6 million (around Rs 700 crore) to the department of energy for an E-Trikes project for Manila. 
 
“Take the example of Delhi University where students were using e-rickshaws to go to college from Metro stations. Students have told me that they have to spend Rs 40 in an auto against Rs 10 in an e-rickshaw, which is equally or more efficient. People will start opting for motorized transport like cars if e-rickshaws are gone as there aren’t many options to travel from Metro stations,” said Anumita Roychowdhury, head of Centre for Science and Environment (CSE)’s Clean Air programme. 
 
In fact, Roychowdhury says doing away with e-rickshaws will be like destroying Delhi’s public transport system. “We certainly need to make some basic safety checks; we have enough regulations for disposal of batteries. We have a high-powered committee on electric vehicles, then why are we making e-rickshaws an exception? I think this zero-emission mode needs to be celebrated,” she added. 
 
To start with, allowing e-rickshaws to run within an 800-1,000m radius of Metro stations can be useful. 
 Experts say e-rickshaws seemed to meet a latent demand for fast, comfortable para-transit that was not met by autos. E-rickshaws were running short distances due to lack of charging points, some suggest that the government can set up battery charging stations, preferably with <keyword id="70990" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Solar-power">solar power</keyword>, near Metro stations. 
 
“They don’t have a battery which is less than 250 Watt, as was thought earlier. Most e-rickshaws have an over 650-Watt battery which make them motor vehicles so they can be regulated under MV Act. There needs to be another regulation to check basic things like visibility, brakes, frame etc. The Delhi environment department can possibly regulate battery disposal. I think e-rickshaws can be an excellent last-mile connectivity mode for the city,” said a public transport expert who has studied e-rickshaws in Delhi. 
 
Some suggest that e-rickshaws can be limited to non-motorized transport (NMT) lanes so that they don’t disrupt traffic. One e-rickshaw per owner can also help in ensuring that there is no sub-letting or mafia involved. 
 
Ravi Agarwal of Toxics Link said that the existing acid battery management and handling rules have failed due to lack of enforcement. “The rules have to be enforced strictly or it can lead to serious soil and water pollution,” he said. 
 
E-rickshaws can also help Delhi deal with its air pollution crisis. The LG’s high-powered committee on air pollution has also recommended promotion of battery-run vehicles. “E-rickshaws are important in Delhi because they have zero emissions. I agree that they need conventional power to charge and this leads to pollution elsewhere from power plants. But for a city that’s suffering from very poor air quality, it needs to promote non-polluting modes,” said Sarath Guttikunda of urbanemissions.info. 
 
As far as livelihood and business is concerned, e-rickshaws have given income options to over 1 lakh people in the capital. The batteries are currently imported from China but can be made locally too.

Experts Welcome E-rickshaws Guidelines

The drivers can register themselves as a merchant at zero investment, on the Chat-n-Pay platform by simply adding their banking details. For consumers and drivers, Chat-n-Pay will help eliminate the hassle of managing and arranging change and will further offer convenience to pay on-the-go in a seamless and secure manner.

As part of their on-going initiative BMC will distribute 5,100 E-Rickshaws at the event. FreeCharge will be setting up training for all these drivers via BMC to help them understand how to use FreeCharge app and accept payments. FreeCharge will also create an exclusive incentive plan for all the E-Rickshaw drivers to encourage them to use digital payments to pay for services like mobile recharges, electricity bill payments etc.

<keyword id="2238662" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="PM-Modi">PM Modi</keyword> has launched the 'Stand-up India' scheme, which was announced during his Independence Day speech, in order to boost government's financial inclusion programme. Under the scheme, 1.25 lakh bank branches will provide loans up to Rs 1 crore to SC/ST and women entrepreneurs. 
 
The scheme was launched at a function organised to mark the birth anniversary of dalit leader and former Deputy Prime Minister Babu Jagjivan Ram, where in Modi also flagged off 5,100 e-rickshaws. 
 
While explaining the outlines of Stand-up India programme to people present there, Modi said that the programme will help create 2.5 lakh entrepreneurs throughout the country, given that every bank branch will be required to provide two such loans and that too in the range of Rs 10 lakh to Rs 1 crore without collateral for setting up a new enterprise. 
 
He also stressed that it was not possible for the government to provide jobs to everyone, which is why the scheme seeks to convert "job-seekers into job-creators...This scheme is going to transform the lives of people from dalit and tribal communities." 
 He added that <keyword id="3086992" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Stand-up-India">Stand up India</keyword> aims to empower every Indian and enable them to stand on their own feet.

Modi’s 'Stand up India' scheme to aid SC/ST and women entrepreneurs

<ul><li>A report by Ola Mobility Institute said that shared transportation will be a major contributing factor in the growth of EVs. </li><li>Two-wheelers and three-wheelers have the highest demand in India. </li><li>However, given India’s infrastructural problems from bad roads to lack of charging stations, the EV journey has multiple challenges. </li></ul>On the Indian roads one cannot miss the overwhelming presence of two-wheelers and three-wheelers. So it’s no surprise that they will form a major part of India’s electric vehicles mission. A report on electric mobility published by Ola Mobility Institute said that it’s shared transportation that can only push the growth of EVs. India has been shifting its gears in transportation to embrace Electric Vehicles (EVs). While news about India’s top auto manufacturers introducing electric vehicle manufacturing doesn’t surprise one now, questions still lurk about the country’s acceptance to EVs because of lack of proper infrastructure. “Unlike Western models, India may not easily kick start its electric journey by deploying premium electric cars. Instead, it makes sense to focus on electrifying vehicles with the highest demand and utility in the Indian context: two-wheelers and three-wheelers. The rickshaw is already proliferating in electric variants, suggesting it is both viable and practical. Thus, appropriate prioritisation of vehicle segments for electrification may prove to be critical to the adoption of e-mobility,” stated the report. Ola’s report is based on its pilot project in Nagpur, while its on a mission to bring 1 million EVs on Indian roads by 2022. The government expects that 25% of all vehicles on the roads will be EVs by 2030. And the push has to come with two-wheelers and three-wheelers, which today occupy over 80% of total Indian vehicles and also contribute to 35% of pollution in India, according to a report by NITI Aayog and World Energy Council. The Indian government too has been promoting the use and manufacture of EVs. Under the FAME II scheme, the government is <a href="https://tech.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/corporate/government-tightens-localisation-norms-for-electric-vehicles/68294648">offering</a> direct subsidies of upto ₹88 billion to consumers who are adopting EVs. However, given India’s infrastructural problems from bad roads to lack of charging stations, the EV journey has a few speed bumps. Another challenge is the high electricity tariff. Ola’s report states, “Although the cost of electricity shrunk significantly post the implementation of special EV tariff in October 2018, the tariff continues to be unfavorable for TCO (Total Cost Opportunity) economics to work.” With drivers too having had little or no exposure to electric vehicles, it is another task when it comes to the adoption of EVs. In fact, Ola’s initial plan of electric mobility in Nagpur also faced trouble when drivers started reportedly returning the vehicles.

This drop across different segments of the auto industry reflects the challenges the sector faces during the current fiscal year. Two-wheeler sales showed a more positive trend. Scooter sales recorded a growth of 16.9% in the second quarter, with a total of 18.32 lakh units sold compared to 15.67 lakh units in the same period last year. Motorcycle sales also increased by 10.2%, reaching 32.09 lakh units compared to 29.13 lakh units in the year-ago quarter. On the other hand, the electric rickshaw (E-rickshaw) segment saw a sharp decline in sales. E-rickshaw sales dropped by 30.7% in the second quarter, with only 7,227 units sold compared to 10,430 units in the same quarter last year. Substantial drop in sales of cars, goods carriers and light commercial vehicles in Q2: SIAM

Up to 3.72 lakh <keyword id="19895203" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="electric-vehicles" source="keywords">electric vehicles</keyword> will be supported under the four-month <keyword id="20961992" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Electric-Mobility-Promotion-Scheme" source="keywords">Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme</keyword> (<keyword id="20951149" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="EMPS" source="keywords">EMPS</keyword>) being implemented between April and July with an outlay of Rs 493.55 crore, the government said on Tuesday. Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme (EMPS) - 2024 will provide further impetus to the <keyword id="20156633" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="green-mobility" source="keywords">green mobility</keyword> and development of electric vehicle (EV) <keyword id="20071405" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="manufacturing-ecosystem" source="keywords">manufacturing ecosystem</keyword> in the country.
