Ministry of External Affairs Secretary Sanjay Bhatttacharyya, in a tweet, emphasised that the passport would be secured with biometric data and will enable smooth passage through immigration posts globally. <div type="javascript" title="Custom" contenttype="Image"><cdata><![CDATA[ ]]></cdata></div> Till now, passports were issued in the form of personalised printed booklets. The Indian government has previously issued 20,000 official and diplomatic e-passports. The passport was embedded with a microchip, which held all vital information related to the passport holder’s biometric data. The e-passport was also enabled security features that will disallow unauthorized data transfer through radio-frequency identification, also known as RFID. While announcing the e-passport last year, the Ministry of External Affairs had mentioned that the e-passport would be harder to destroy and be compliant with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards. The government had previously decided to start issuing e-passport in 2021, but it was delayed. It is important to note that the process of applying for the passport would continue to be the same. Users would still have to file out an application form on the government website and select a date of appointment for document verification. The issuance time too will also not be affected by the new system. Indians will soon be able to carry e-passports while travelling

<keyword id="85679" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="e-passports" source="Orion">E-passports</keyword> with embedded chips and futuristic technology will be rolled out in 2022-23, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced at the <keyword id="12134566" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="union-budget-2022" source="Orion">Union Budget 2022</keyword>. E-passports were first announced in 2019 and the government said that they are compliant with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards. The issuance of Indian e-passports will take place soon, and the process to apply will be the same as the traditional passports. The e-passports will have an embedded chip that will contain all the personal information including the biographical details that are visible on page 2 of the passport. E-passports will also have a digital signature that is unique to each country and can be easily verified using a certificate. The government has so far issued 20,000 official and diplomatic e-passports. This is the first time citizens of the country will be issued e-passports. The first e-passport in India was issued to the then President of India, Pratibha Patil in 2008. India’s e-passports are expected to have thicker front and back covers, and will take a few seconds to read. A small silicon chip will be embedded in the back cover and it will have 64 kilobytes of memory which will contain the passport holder’s photograph and fingerprints. E-passports are also expected to store up to 30 visits.

India says Afghan nationals should apply for e-visas from now on, existing visas invalidated

In with the trend are not just Indian brands but foreign brands want to go where they see ‘growth’. When it comes to store opening both fashion, cars or even fast food chains, they all want to grow across metros and smaller cities — on an almost equal footing. "Even though growth in Tier 1 cities has not yet exhausted, Tier 2 cities are growing much faster. At present, 40 out of our 100 stores are in Tier 2 cities. Provided the right locations come up in these cities, we will look at more stores in these cities," Ritesh Mishra, MD of Marks and Spencer Reliance India told Business Insider India. Yet another UK based fashion retailer Pepe Jeans India also said that it plans to open around 30 new stores every year. Of that, a majority would be in smaller cities. “We have not covered many Tier 2 cities, and they also provide higher avenues to growth,” said Manish Kapoor, CEO &amp; MD of Pepe Jeans India told Business Insider India. Thanks to exposure to the internet, the small town consumers are just as fashion forward as their metro consumers. “Their exposure to brands, fashions and international styles is on par with the metro consumers,” said Kapoor. Online presence also helps these brands service many more pin codes across the country. Mishra agrees, and adds that there is not much of a difference between the consumers in Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities except that the basket value in the smaller cities may be a tad lower. They also intend to reach more pin codes via e-commerce, taking their style and substance to all of India that wants it. For a long time, smaller cities have been smaller markets for large brands. But what’s changed in the last few years, the number of middle income households are changing. Their incomes are growing on-par too. According to consumer insights company Kantar, all-India urban average monthly household income has been growing at 8.4% for the last five years. In Tier 2 and tier 3 cities, it has been growing a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.8%. More money to spend The discretionary wallet share of a smaller city consumer is also higher, argues Kapoor. “For example, take a person who earns ₹1 lakh per month in Bombay, he or she would spend ₹40,000-45,000 on rent and then some more on commuting and other essentials. Then take a person who earns ₹50,000 pm in Lucknow — all the aforesaid expenses will be under ₹25,000,” he explains. Moreover, the new generation of consumers – be it millennials or GenZs – are focussed on experiences, consumption and self-care. That’s bringing about a marked change in the traditional mindset of people — all manna for brands. “Earlier people would feel guilty of spending, now the new generation thinks — Why not? What else do we earn for?” sums up Kapoor, profiling the consumers they’re going after in smaller towns, who wouldn’t flinch before spending ₹5,000 on a pair of jeans. Currently, its main sources of revenue are its popular saving scheme, its payments bank and particularly, its e-commerce portal. However, its traditional services have suffered for the past many years. Even the courier service industry has multiple players driving down prices and exclusivity. <ul><li><keyword id="4009819" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon-Pay">Amazon Pay</keyword>, <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> <keyword id="418872" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="digital-wallet">digital wallet</keyword> in <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>, is rolling out user verification (KYC) for its customers.</li><li>Reportedly submitting biometrics using <keyword id="144117" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="AADHAAR">Aadhaar</keyword> credentials is a faster process for verification than other physical documents. </li><li>But concerns related to Aadhaar aren’t about its convenience, but about its security.</li></ul>Amazon Pay is the next digital wallet to roll out physical customer verification — but there’s a catch. If you use your <keyword id="6356006" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aadhaar-card">Aadhaar card</keyword> for verification, the process is a lot quicker than if you other methods of verification — passport, drivers license, voter ID, or bank statements. It’s not really Amazon’s fault because the biometric verification through Aadhar is simple matter of verifying your fingerprint through a fingerprint reader. But, with other physical documents, the company needs people on the ground to verify the authenticity of the documents. Simply put, the verification through Aadhaar is a lot cheaper for Amazon as compared to using other documents for physical verification. Amazon Pay and other digital wallets have to enforce user verification in line with the Reserve Bank of India’s new policy on data localisation. Not an Amazon-specific problem India’s central bank, the Reserve Bank of India, rolled out its data localisation policy rendering 95% of mobile wallets in the country vulnerable to being shut down. The directive of the policy makes it mandatory for all digital wallets to have biometrics or physical customer verification in place. Even PayTM nudged its users into adopting KYC in order to continue using their wallets. If your PayTM account isn’t verified, you can still receive payments from other users and make payments at retail outlets using the QR-code but you can’t send out money to other users directly. Other digital wallets like MobiKwik have shifted to diversifying themselves because they haven’t been able to push their customers towards KYC norms with RBI’s February deadline coming up. The case with Aadhaar India’s top court has already ruled that private companies can’t make it ‘mandatory’ for Aadhaar to be the only method of user verification. But that doesn’t negate it as an option. The issue that people are facing with Aadhaar isn’t whether or not it’s convenient, but whether or not it’s safe. The series of data breaches associated with the Aadhaar system didn’t happen through actual government database, but through third-party organisations that were using Aadhaar information as user identification. A <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/80-people-concerned-about-aadhaar-data-security-study/articleshow/64382747.cms">study </a>by Velocity MR estimates that as many as 80% of respondents in India are concerned about data security when it comes to giving out their Aadhaar card information anywhere. It’s not just about identity theft but information being leaked that leads to customers being spammed over text and email — or even phished. This is probably why Amazon is looking to roll out its own Unified Payments Interface (<keyword id="6358921" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="upi">UPI</keyword>) because, in that case, KYC isn’t mandatory for setting up an account. Cryptocurrencies might be popular in India, but even the most learned of us are often unclear about these three questions. If we were to buy a bunch of cryptocurrency on an exchange in India, would we be breaking the law? The country actually has a burgeoning blockchain market that dates back at least five years. However, the legal tussles over cryptocurrencies began in 2018. It has so far involved billion dollar companies, government officials and ministers, courts, and of course, crores of investors. <ol><li>Is ‘all’ crypto activity banned in India? Let’s get one thing straight, cryptocurrencies are not banned in India. Actually, they have never ever been banned in India. The confusion behind this comes from a couple of moves by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in 2018. It all started with an official directive the RBI issued to banks and financial institutions. Within the notification, the central bank told these institutions to stop doing business with cryptocurrency exchanges — note, RBI’s ruling applies to banks and institutions, it said nothing about people owning cryptos.The ruling was struck down in 2020 by the Supreme Court, which actually began the onslaught of crypto exchanges in India. But just as things were looking up, in May this year, the RBI sent an informal note to banks asking them to be wary of crypto exchanges.Which, in turn, led banks to withdraw services from crypto exchanges overnight, and platforms had to stop taking deposits in Indian Rupee temporarily. Things were resolved in less than a month, but some banks remain wary and do not allow people to deposit money in crypto exchanges.</li><li><keyword id="12685645" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="is-crypto-trading-legal-in-india" source="Orion">Is crypto trading legal in India</keyword>? It’s easy to jot down trading of crypto to be a legal grey area, but experts will actually tell you that there’s no law in the country that bans cryptos or says that trading such digital assets is illegal. Currently, the government is working on a bill that will regulate crypto trading, and it will bring rules on how cryptocurrency exchanges like WazirX are supposed to operate in the country, how income from such currencies will be taxed and other aspects.Even the RBI hasn’t said cryptos are illegal, though the bank has concerns. "When the RBI, after due internal deliberation, says that there are serious concerns on macro economic and financial stability, there are deeper issues, which need much deeper discussions and much more well informed discussions," RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said at an event recently.</li><li><keyword id="12685644" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="is-crypto-mining-legal-in-india" source="Orion">Is crypto mining legal in India</keyword>? In fact, given that public cryptos are mined using your own computing equipment, it doesn’t interfere with any laws at the moment.</li><li><keyword id="12685642" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="is-bitcoin-legal-in-india" source="Orion">Is Bitcoin legal in India</keyword>? If you’re asking whether Bitcoin is “legal tender” in India, the answer to that is no. Which means that you cannot use Bitcoin to buy things in place of the Indian Rupee. The government doesn’t recognize the asset as legal tender, much like the rules in the US, UK and most other countries worldwide.Someone asked this very question of the Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, at the Parliament earlier this week. To which, she replied, “No, sir”, informing the floor that there is no proposal for recognising Bitcoin as legal tender.</li><li>Do you have to pay taxes on crypto in India? You have to pay tax on any kind of income of profit in India, and income from trading in crypto assets is no different.At the moment, there is no specific guidance in the Income Tax Act for taxing income from crypto trading. However, many experts recommend that profits from cryptos should be reported in the income tax return (ITR) as capital gains.“The income earned by crypto exchanges and other crypto service providing platforms is liable to tax under the head Business or Profession under Chapter-IV of the Income-tax Act, 1961. Applicability of tax rate will depend on status and category of taxpayer,” Sitharaman explained during the ongoing session of Parliament on November 30.</li><li>Is blockchain technology legal in India? Absolutely. Blockchain technology is as legal as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) or any other form of emerging technology. In fact, the Andhra Pradesh government had built a blockchain-based platform for managing land records two years ago, while the RBI is working on a central bank digital currency (CBDC) that will also be based on blockchain technology. The Maharashtra government has also been evaluating the use of blockchains for e-governance, while car-maker MG Motors has built a blockchain platform for the Digital Passport feature of the MG Astor.</li><li>How is blockchain technology different from cryptocurrencies? Blockchains are actually the underlying platforms that are powered by cryptocurrencies. In essence, a blockchain is just a database that is immutable and extremely secure. Meanwhile, the records of cryptocurrency transactions, or other forms of transactions and records are maintained on blockchains.</li><li>Would a ban on cryptocurrency hamper blockchain technology in India? To a certain extent, yes. In order for developers to build applications on a blockchain, they need to pay transaction fees. And these transaction fees, or ‘gas fees’ need to be paid in the respective token of that blockchain. For instance, if someone is building on the Ethereum blockchain, their transactions would be validated using Ether and on the Cardano blockchain, it would be the ADA token.Banning an entire cryptocurrency, or payments in a particular cryptocurrency, would mean not being able to build on the platform as well — at least not from within the Indian banking sector.</li><li>Is India working on its own CBDC? As mentioned before, the RBI is working on a CBDC that will be based on a private blockchain platform. While being a public good, its governance will be in the hands of a centralised entity — the central bank.In fact, the listing of the <keyword id="10822352" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="crypto-bill" source="Orion">crypto bill</keyword> in the Parliament’s agenda for the winter session, which sparked rumours of a ban again, also mentioned that the bill would lay the framework for a CBDC in the country.The RBI is still formulating how such a platform will work, and it’s likely going to be absolutely different from cryptocurrencies. RBI will have full control over the platform and for consumers, it will be no different from using digital payments right now.</li><li>What do we know about India’s crypto bill so far? The crypto bill is unlikely to ban cryptocurrencies but regulate them. According to a report by NDTV, India’s crypto exchanges will come under the umbrella of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). Citizens of India will be required to keep their cryptocurrencies with Indian exchanges only — the proposed laws reportedly disallow people from keeping their investment on global exchanges or in private wallets. Once the bill is approved, people will get a certain amount of time to shift their funds after which, they could be penalised within the range of ₹5 crore to ₹20 crore. According to Sitharaman, the government is closely monitoring the risks that cryptocurrencies present. Likely for that reason, India plans to amend its Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) to make provisions for cryptocurrency activity. India carried out 15 lakh COVID-19 tests on Jan 6, but that is not enough

After <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Narendra+Modi">Prime Minister Narendra </a><a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Narendra+Modi">Modi</a>-led government extended <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=e-tourist+visa">e-tourist visa</a> facility to nationals of 76 countries, experts are of the opinion that this move will give a boost to tourism in the country. 
 
Earlier, India offered <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=visa+on+arrival">visa on arrival</a> to nationals of 12 countries. 
 
So, hoteliers can expect some brisk business in the second half of this financial year. 
 
The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=tourism+industry">tourism industry</a> is expecting 15% growth in foreign tourist arrivals in the current fiscal over the previous year. In the past three years, the industry witnessed annual growth of about 10% in the past three years. 
 
In 2014-15, foreign tourist arrivals grew 8.2% over the previous year to 77 lakh. 
 
"Given all the push and impetus given to tourism by the central government and the fact that overall we are seeing more interest from foreign tourists -both corporate and leisure -the growth might be trumping what you have seen in the past and you could see a 12-15% year-on-year growth in foreign tourist arrivals this year," Achin Khanna, managing director for consulting and valuation practice at HVS South Asia, told Economic Times. 
 Under the <keyword id="2808505" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="e-tourist-visa">e-tourist visa</keyword> scheme, foreign nationals can apply for a visa by uploading their <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=passport">passport</a> and photograph and paying the visa fee on line. 
 
Then the concerned authorities will send an electronic travel authorisation, or e-visa, via email within 72 hours. 
 
As per the he tourism ministry, the number of tourists under the e-tourist visa scheme grew to 1, 26, 214 in the six months to June. 
 
Following economic slowdown, India's hospitality industry has been in the doldrums over the past few years.

India awaits foreign tourists from 76 countries with open arms, thanks to e-tourist visa

<ul><li>Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Union Budget for 2022-23 in Parliament on Tuesday.</li><li>This year's budget is indexed towards startups, MSMEs, infrastructure projects, rural revival, digital payment apps, telecom growth and affordable housing.</li><li>We reached out to digital, media and creative agencies to understand how the increased focus on digitalisation, sustainability, blockchain and push to MSME can impact the ad and marketing industry.</li></ul>Be it the introduction of a Digital University to make education accessible across the country or the proposed launch of a Digital currency by the Reserve Bank of India to the government’s focus on promoting digital payments and fintech, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman made it is clear that digital is the way forward. The Union Budget 2022-23 aims to boost the country's digital infrastructure and enable a cashless economy. The government also announced that it will set up an Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming and Comics (AVGC) promotion task force to give a push to the animation and gaming industry. To facilitate the roll-out of 5G mobile services in India, FM Sitharaman said that Spectrum auctions will be conducted in 2022. This, in turn, will give impetus to Voice, Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality and pave the way for the Metaverse. The Digital Rupee using blockchain will help Indians accept virtual currency and accelerate cryptocurrency exchange in India. Overall, the budget also shows a promise for Electric Vehicle brands, digital payment apps, MSMEs, gaming industry and start-ups. We reached out to digital, media and creative agencies to understand how the increased focus on digitalisation, sustainability and blockchain can impact the advertising and marketing industry. Here’s what they said: Anupriya Acharya, South Asia CEO, Publicis Groupe: The Budget is positive, growth-oriented and with reforms in the right direction. The advent of 5G is sure to transform communications – for our industry it will help creation of better AV, voice and AR/VR experiences. It will also fuel digital payments, streaming entertainment, gaming, e-commerce, tele-medicine etc which in turn will aid more Unicorns! It is also heartening to note that a special Task Force is being set up for AVGC (Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming and Comic) as this will help us build the much needed capacity both for domestic as well as global markets. And then there have been no changes in income-tax slabs for people, which many consumer segments were worried about. This in turn boosts consumer sentiment. From e-passports, to battery swapping for electric vehicles, setting up of optic fiber in the remotest of villages, setting up of a digital university and skilling through an e-portal, the big push is for technology, digital infrastructure and empowerment. Narayan Devanathan, Chief Client Officer, dentsu India: Having gone through the 38-page document of the Finance Minister’s budget speech, I decided to do a search for a couple of words that I thought kept repeating throughout her speech. The words “will be” occurred 110 times in the entire speech. When I narrowed my search to the single word “will,” the number rose to 362. To me, those two words sum up the essence of what this year’s budget is and is not. What it is, is a future-focused budget, aiming at the distant vision of India@100, with a 25-year Amrit Kaal lead-up. What it is not, and what I felt was sorely needed this year of all years, is a present-focused budget. A punishing 2021 for the aam aadmi with more-than-usual expenditure on health and sustenance meant the general populace was looking for immediate relief that would place more cash in their household budgets. That did not happen. Nor was there any extraordinary investment in relieving the healthcare expenditure burden. For all the importance of farmers in upcoming poll-bound states, there was neither major sop nor stimulus given to back the importance of agriculture as a spine if not engine of the economy. Even the MSME sectors were only handed a slightly longer lease of life with the extension of the ECLGS, but there was no real move to stimulate consumption by placing more cash at consumers’ disposal, for example, extending LTA claims to restaurants (and not just accommodation). There is perhaps plenty for the industry to cheer about since it can afford to think about the future and a slightly longer term than just the here and now of survival. The stock market did cheer up even before the FM’s speech, but that only served to underscore the dichotomy between the real health of the population and the Minority of Haves. When the general population probably can’t afford to wait for the benefits of trickle-down economics to reach them in yet another trying year, the dreams and wheels of a consumer-driven economy might move slower than the industry might like, despite the many future-facing and progressive policies announced. Virat Tandon, Group CEO, MullenLowe Lintas Group: The union budget can be termed as consistent with the government's vision to reach the 5 trillion GDP mark by 2025-26. Hence, the strong focus on capex to boost infrastructure that connects and streamlines middle India and provides the engines of entrepreneurship across the length and breadth of the country. It also shows India's commitment to bring a digital first economy with the 5G rollout planned for next financial year, clarity on India's policy for cryptocurrency, data centres, EVs and our very own digital Rupee. Anurag Bansal, COO &amp; CFO, DDB Mudra Group: This Union Budget looks neutral, with no major changes in taxation. The 2022-23 budget finely balanced fiscal retreat with supporting economic recovery. The budget focused on a familiar strategy of driving capital expenditure to drive growth, to crowd in private investment through higher public spending. Although markets could be disappointed with a higher fiscal deficit of 6.4% of GDP for FY23 than expected, it is perhaps prudent to not undertake aggressive fiscal consolidation at this nascent stage of recovery. While elevated market borrowings are likely to pressurize bond yields, the inclusion of green bonds in the borrowing plan is an interesting innovation. In terms of specific policy announcements, the move towards self-reliance through protection for domestic manufacturers (change in custom and import duties) aligns with the long-term goal of Atmanirbhar Bharat. The government has extended the startup tax holiday and concessional tax for manufacturing startups by a year. While that was on the cards, it doesn’t address the core need of startups to be given a longer tax holiday of 5 years as required. One of the most encouraging aspects of the budget has been the announcement to set up an AVGC (animation, visual effects, gaming, and comics) promotion task force to plan and build domestic capacity for serving domestic as well as global markets. Loss from the transfer of virtual digital assets cannot be set off against any other income. The creation of a unified logistics platform and the developments of 100 new cargo terminals in the next three years are significant steps in improving the supply chain ecosystem in the country. Infrastructure status given to Data Centers will provide a huge boost to the fast-evolving digital environment of the country. The fiscal outcome is broadly in line with our expectations with the government having continued its focus on infrastructure and rural demand. Himanshu Arya, Founder and CEO, Grapes: The Union Budget for the financial year 2022-23 has set the stage with an invigorated focus on ramping up the process of the digital revolution. The government’s focus on the digital ecosystem is a progressive move to render an inclusive landscape for job openings and entrepreneurial opportunities. The extension of tax incentives for startups for one more year will give a slight relief to the industry. I hope that the cash flow improves in the market.
