<br /><ul><li>Hygiea, classified as an asteroid so far, might actually be a dwarf planet. <br /></li><li>The European Southern Observatory has been able to confirm that Hygiea has a spherical shape.<br /></li><li>But, Hygiea is missing a large impact crater normally found on asteroids after they have broken off from the parent asteroid.<br /></li></ul>The asteroid belt between Jupiter and Mars is home to many asteroids and planets. Now European Southern Observatory (<a href="https://www.eso.org/public/news/eso1918/">ESO</a>) thinks one of the objects floating along the main belt might be the <keyword id="8270160" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="smallest-dwarf-planet">smallest dwarf planet</keyword> in our solar system — an asteroid known as Hygiea.<br /><br />Hygiea isn’t a new discovery but the fact that it meets the International Astronomical Union’s (IAU) requirements to be classified as a dwarf planet is new.<br /><br />It orbits the Sun, and not another planet, so that rules it out from being a Moon. But unlike an actual planet, it hasn’t pushed away or pulled in any of the objects that are cluttering its orbit.<br /><br />ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) was able to capture a third detail that puts Hygiea in the running for a dwarf planet — it has just enough mass for its gravity to pull it together in a spherical shape.<br /><br />"Thanks to the unique capability of the SPHERE instrument on the VLT, which is one of the most powerful imaging systems in the world, we could resolve Hygiea’s shape, which turns out to be nearly spherical," said lead researcher Pierre Vernazza.<br /><br /><strong>Dwarf planets in the universe’s remnants<br /></strong><br />When the big bang first happened and planets were formed, the asteroid belt basically contained whatever was left over. <br /><br />The clumps could have formed a planet but scientists believe that Jupiter’s gravity was so strong that the space objects continued to orbit the Sun instead, colliding every so often.<br /><br />These collisions led to bigger parent bodies breaking into smaller asteroids. The smallest dwarf planet in our solar system was hiding in the asteroid belt

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>NASA's Dawn spacecraft is on course to make history this Friday when it enters into orbit around the closest dwarf planet to Earth, Ceres.</p><p>Ceres is the largest object in a strip of rocky debris, called the asteroid belt, floating in space between the planets Mars and Jupiter. In fact, it was the first dwarf planet ever discovered back in 1801.</p><p>At that time, however, it was classified as a planet, and then later as an asteroid. Today, it meets the criteria for a relatively new class of objects called <a href="http://web.gps.caltech.edu/~mbrown/dwarfplanets/">dwarf planets</a> - a classification that includes the much maligned and very loved Pluto.<br><a href="http://web.gps.caltech.edu/~mbrown/dwarfplanets/"></a></br></p><p>Ceres will be the second object that Dawn will orbit. And this is what makes Dawn so unique: When it reaches Ceres at around 7:20 am ET on Friday, it will become the first spacecraft in history to ever orbit two bodies in its lifetime.</p><p>This is made possible by its ion propulsion system, which gave the spacecraft enough power to escape the gravitational grip of Vesta when it orbited in 2011, and continue on through space toward Ceres. Humans just made history by reaching an icy dwarf planet for the first time

His beef here is that astronomers study a large variety of celestial objects and cosmic phenomena, while planetary scientists focus solely on planets, moons, and planetary systems.</p><p>"Why would you listen to an astronomer about a planet?" Stern said.</p><p>He compared it to going to a podiatrist for brain surgery.</p><p>"Even though they're both doctors, they have different expertise," Stern said. "You really should listen to planetary scientists that know something about this subject. When we look at an object like Pluto, we don't know what else to call it."</p><p><strong>That's because Pluto meets the main criteria for planethood: It is rounded by its own gravity.</strong></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://solarsystem.nasa.gov/multimedia/display.cfm?Category=Planets&amp;IM_ID=20310">NASA/JHUAPL/SWRI</a></span></p><p class="caption">A natural color image of Pluto.</p></div><p></p></div></div>But there's more than that, Stern said.</p><p>On July 14 of this year - after a nearly 10-year, 3-billion-mile journey - New Horizons finally <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/first-pluto-first-surface-photos-new-horizons-2015-7">flew past Pluto</a> and returned our first close up look at the dwarf planet.</p><p>We are learning from the New Horizons data that Pluto is <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/scientists-cant-explain-pluto-three-major-surface-features-2015-7">unexpectedly complex</a>.</p><p>It has more moons than the entirety of the inner solar system. It possesses close to a million times the amount of atmosphere that Mercury has.</p><p>The surface has <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/fly-over-footage-from-new-horizons-of-plutos-mountains-2015-7">water-ice mountains</a> that could rival the Rocky Mountains here on Earth. Its frozen plains are lined with ridges that scientists think are caused by some kind of ongoing geological process.</p><p>"We were just dumbfounded by what a wonderland it is scientifically," Stern said.</p><p>A nonplanet shouldn't be so active.</p><p>"[Pluto] qualifies in every respect," he said. Astronomers - not planetary scientists - "made up a definition, which is actually bogus."</p><p>Of course there are other criteria for planet status, and there's plenty of room for argument. Pluto is far smaller than any of our solar system's other planets; in fact, it's about one-quarter of a percent as massive as the Earth.</p><p>Pluto also doesn't orbit the sun on the same plane that the planets do. Pluto became a dwarf planet 9 years ago today - but that's  'bulls---,' according to a leading NASA scientist

After five decades of planetdom, Ceres was demoted to lowly asteroid.</p><p>If Ceres was going to be an asteroid, it would be king of the asteroids. It held the honor of being the first asteroid ever discovered, and it reigned supreme in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, dominating <a href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=0ahUKEwiU6Ojp5_DOAhVJVhoKHXGvAGIQFggcMAA&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fstarchild.gsfc.nasa.gov%2Fdocs%2FStarChild%2Fsolar_system_level2%2Fceres.html&amp;usg=AFQjCNF_PcT_lGVVGlyq14S3nuEVLwdQEw&amp;bvm=bv.131669213,d.cGc">a third of the belt's mass</a>.</p><p>Then, in 2006, Ceres was once again reclassified, <a href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=3&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=0ahUKEwjPn9v15_DOAhXCWRoKHRRHDb8QFggzMAI&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.space.com%2F22891-ceres-dwarf-planet.html&amp;usg=AFQjCNEeKOGkPIeP6oRrOzk3alHJROcJIw&amp;bvm=bv.131669213,d.cGc">this time as a dwarf planet</a> - not quite a planet, but not quite an asteroid, either. Now Ceres had to share the spotlight with Pluto and the rest of the dwarf planets out there. And at just 600 miles wide, Ceres is one of the smallest dwarf planets in our solar system.</p><h2><strong>A few tricks up its sleeve</strong></h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table center"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Dawn <keyword id="41551" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="science">Science</keyword> Team/NASA/JPL-Caltech/GSFC</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>But that hasn't kept Ceres from shoving its way to the spotlight. The tiny dwarf planet has continued to baffle scientists with <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/ceres-bright-spots-mystery-solved-2015-12">mysterious white spots</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/solving-the-mystery-of-ceress-missing-craters-2016-7">disappearing craters</a>.</p><p>And it turns out the icy world still has a few more tricks up its sleeve. One of those tricks includes a massive ice volcano called Ahuna Mons that spews boiling salt water.</p><p>Published alongside six other studies on Thursday, NASA scientists released a paper in Science that claims that <a href="http://science.sciencemag.org/cgi/doi/10.1126/science.aaf4286">Ahuna Mons is the strongest evidence yet</a> for the existence of these mysterious ice volcanoes. The scientists used data from the Dawn spacecraft they sent to investigate the asteroid belt.</p><p>Ahuna Mons is a <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/mystery-pyramid-nasa-asteroid-belt-2016-3">gigantic pyramid-shaped mountain</a> taking up a huge, isolated chunk of Ceres that has been baffling scientists for years. It's 13,000 feet high and 11 miles wide at its base - about half the size of Mt. Everest. And on a planetary body the size of Texas, that kind of structure stands out. Scientists had no idea how such a giant, isolated mountain could have formed on the dwarf planet.</p><p>Another interesting fact about Ahuna Mons is its age. While a few hundred million years sounds ancient compared to the young volcanoes on Earth, it's extremely young compared to volcanoes on the moon and Mars.</p><p>And even weirder than its disproportionate size, its age, and its lonely location is the material that the volcano is made of - ice. Scientists have long suspected that crazy ice volcanoes, called cryovolcanoes, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/close-up-photos-ice-volcanoes-pluto-surface-2016-1">exist on Pluto</a> and Ceres and even Saturn's moon Titan, but Ahuna Mons has given them their first real evidence of cryovolcanism.</p><h2><strong>What is cryovolcanism?</strong></h2><p>Cryovolcanoes are kind of like regular volcanoes except ... different. Instead of spitting out molten rock when they erupt, they spit out a mixture of salt and water. As Ahuna Mons spews out the salty water it freezes, creating an icy dome at the top, which, for the NASA scientists was one of the telltale signs that Ahuna Mons is a cryovolcano.</p><p>The scientists used geological maps of the region made from images taken by Dawn as it orbited Ceres, Ottaviano Ruesch, NASA scientist and lead author of the paper, told Business Insider. They looked at craters and used 3D elevation models look at what processes could form the isolated mountain. Because they were able to exclude formation by tectonic plates and erosion, volcanism seemed like their best choice.</p><p>"The only process that forms an isolated mountain is volcanism," Ruesch said.</p><p>After studying the 3D models they made of Ahuna Mons, the scientists also compared its structure to that of other volcanoes. They found that the small volcanic dome, as well as the flanks and summit, are all extremely similar to what you'd find on Earth, the moon, and Mars.</p><p>"We've seen hints of cryovolcanic activity in the past but weren't sure at all so this is an important discovery that puts constraints on how Ceres could have evolved," Ruesch said. "This mountain on the surface tells us what's going on the interior."</p><p>According to Ruesch, the volcano could shine light on a key process in the evolution of Ceres that formed new crystals and minerals such as salt. It was this salt that enabled the formation of fluids on Ceres. That's because when you add salt to water, it lowers the temperature at which the water freezes, allowing it to stay fluid for longer.</p><p>As Dawn continues orbiting around Ceres, scientists will take more images of the mountain to see if there are any changes and make sure there isn't any life still brewing in the volcano. This will allow them to add temporal dimensions to their models, taking more pictures over a longer period of time.</p><p>"We don't expect to find any [life] but you never know," Ruesch said. "Nature surprises us every time so we want to make sure the volcano isn't active."</p><p>So Ceres might not be a planet. And it might not be king of the asteroids. But it's home to a giant volcano made of ice. Millions of miles from Earth, NASA found a mysterious ice volcano that's half the size of Mt. Everest

<p>Pluto is perhaps the most beloved object in our Solar System.</p><p>So when the New Horizons spacecraft <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/first-pluto-first-surface-photos-new-horizons-2015-7">flew past Pluto</a> on July 14 - a nearly 10-year, 3-billion-mile journey - we weren't too surprised to learn NASA saw unprecedented traffic to its website, and that the news made the front page of <a href="https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?id=256337937756510&amp;story_fbid=905870672803230" target="_blank">450 newspapers</a>.</p><p>Alan Stern, the lead scientist behind the New Horizons mission, had a lot to celebrate that day:</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>NASA TV</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The mission to Pluto was meant to complete the exploration of the planets in the Solar System.
