The Covid-19 pandemic pushed the companies in almost all the sectors to offer work from home to employees. The workforce which shifted to their hometowns now are reluctant to come back. The companies are also willing to adopt permanent remote working and are also tapping into tier 2 and 3 cities to attract the talent pool in these locations. Keeping in mind that work from home will still persist, more than 61% of IT-BPM companies had contract employees working from remote locations. This helped the companies to reduce the burden of hiring full time employees at short notice and execute short-to-medium term projects at lower costs and minimal resources. It has also led to an increase in the number of contract jobs by at least 24,000 in the last two quarters, the report highlights. The number of contract job opportunities is estimated to grow from 1.5 lakh in FY22 to 1.81 lakh in FY23. “As India’s IT employment is expected to double in the next five years, contract staffing share is expected to grow from the current 3% to 6%. Our industry here also amounts to 55% of the global outsourcing market,” Chemmankotil said. Durgapur and Salem among 20 emerging IT destinations in India: TeamLease

New Delhi, Mar 23 () GE Power India on Monday said it has temporarily suspended operations at its plant at Durgapur and Noida, and asked its employees to work from home till March 31, amid COVID-19 outbreak. "At the direction of the central and state government, GE Power India Ltd (GEPIL) has temporarily suspended plant operations at Durgapur and Noida and advised the employees to work from home beginning today through at least March 27-31, 2020, respectively, or until further notice," a company statement said. The company is also following all applicable advisories issued in this regard by the central and state governments and/or competent authorities and taking all protective measures at its offices, manufacturing and project sites. GE's first priority is the health and safety of its employees. "We are monitoring the situation closely and will continue to follow the central and state government's recommendations and take appropriate actions to protect employees and do our part to help control the spread of COVID-19," it added. TMC's decision to contest independently in the state, rather than as part of the bloc, has led to a three-way contest, with the other contenders being the BJP and the Congress-Left alliance. Political analysts suggest that without a dominant national narrative like national security after the 2019 Pulwama attacks, local concerns such as corruption allegations, the cancellation of School Service Commission (SSC) jobs, incidents in Sandeshkhali and implementation of the <keyword id="19965573" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Citizenship-Amendment-Act" source="keywords">Citizenship Amendment Act</keyword> (CAA) are altering election dynamics. Maidul Islam, a political scientist at the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, remarked, "Till a few months ago, it seemed the elections in Bengal will be a bipolar contest between the TMC and BJP. But with issues like corruption and Sandeshkhali gaining prominence, the Left-Congress alliance is fast gaining traction in several seats and turning the polls into a three-cornered contest in at least 18-20 LS segments." He said besides the two and three seats in Malda and Murshidabad districts, where TMC and Congress secured two each and the BJP one in 2019, there are 13 seats spread across South Bengal, where the TMC and the Left-Congress alliance are engaging in intense competition. "It's not that the Left-Congress will win many seats, but in segments where their vote share is above 10 per cent, there is a likelihood that they might influence the outcome, to the disadvantage of either the TMC or the BJP, if they manage to secure two per cent more votes," Islam added. According to sources in TMC and CPI(M), the electoral battleground extends beyond Malda and Murshidabad, encompassing Lok Sabha segments like Dum Dum, Srerampore, Arambagh, Hooghly, Howrah, Barrackpore, Bardhaman-Purba, Bardhaman-Durgapur, Bankura, Purulia, Tamluk, Kolkata North, and Jadavpur, all poised for a three-cornered fight. Notably, eight of these seats were won by TMC and the remaining by BJP in the 2019 parliamentary polls. "The shift in dynamics presents the Congress-Left alliance as a significant player, and its emergence complicates the electoral narrative, transcending the conventional TMC versus BJP dichotomy," political analyst Subhomoy Moitra said. While the Left Front is contesting 30 seats, the Congress has fielded candidates in 12 out of 42 seats. "We wanted an alliance with the Congress, but they were delaying the seat-sharing arrangements, so we decided to go alone. Now the Left-Congress alliance is helping the BJP by trying to eat into our votes," remarked TMC leader Santanu Sen. According to TMC leaders, the breakup of INDIA alliance in Bengal has both electoral advantages and disadvantages. "After the Left and Congress alliance fell apart in West Bengal in 2019, it had led to a four-cornered contest with BJP bagging the entire chunk of the anti-TMC votes in the state," they said. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP bagged 18 seats and its vote share rose from 17 to 40 per cent. Meanwhile, despite a 3 per cent rise in vote share, the TMC lost 12 seats, dropping from 34 to 22. The Left drew a blank with a vote share decline from 24 per cent to 6 per cent, and the Congress lost two seats, shrinking its vote share from 9.5 per cent to 5 per cent and bagging just two seats. "Local issues such as corruption and SSC scam are helping the Left-Congress in the state as there is anger among a section of people against the TMC and also against the BJP over the perception of a tacit understanding," a TMC leader said. Analysts observe that <keyword id="43868" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="mamata-banerjee" source="Orion">Mamata Banerjee</keyword>'s intensified criticism of Left and Congress, accusing them of aiding BJP, and the ensuing sharp responses from CPI(M) and Congress, alleging a secret pact between TMC and BJP, as indicative of the growing significance of Left-Congress alliance. Data from various local elections and by-polls conducted after 2021 assembly elections indicate a shift in anti-TMC votes as there has been a resurgence of Left-Congress combine. Incidentally, the BJP had witnessed a decline in its vote share as compared to the 2019 Lok Sabha and 38 per cent in 2021 assembly polls. In 2023, violence scarred panchayat polls which covered nearly 70 per cent of the state's electorate, the TMC had bagged 51 per cent of votes whereas the BJP had bagged 22 per cent. CPI(M) leader Sujan Chakraborty expressed confidence in the Left-Congress alliance's potential to deliver surprising results in the elections, claiming initial success in breaking bipolar politics in Bengal. BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar downplayed the significance of the rift in opposition alliance and the three-cornered fight in various seats. "People know that BJP is only fighting TMC's misrule in Bengal. Those who want to vote against TMC, will vote for us only just like in the 2019 and 2021 polls," he said. Political scientist Biswanath Chakraborty suggested that TMC stands to gain the most from the three-cornered contest. In minority pockets, the Left-Congress alliance could dent TMC's vote base, potentially aiding BJP's prospects, he noted.

A lot of SpiceJet passengers have been safe across five such incidents that happened in the last three months. But the turbulent times that passengers faced, might keep them away from the third largest airline in the country. Airlines in general have been cutting corners and compromising on passenger comfort – said 79% of the Indian passengers polled. “On an aggregate basis, flight delays, inflight services, boarding and check-in procedures, baggage handling and timely information sharing among top issues Indian passengers face, with airlines,” said the LocalCircles report. And, 41% of the respondents said ‘flight delays’ as the foremost unsatisfactory factor, followed by poor aircraft interiors including seat, entertainment system for 28% of them. A few days before this, a lot of passengers were severely injured in a SpiceJet aircraft flying from Mumbai to Jabalpur due to severe turbulence before landing. Asansol and Durgapur, the cities which still hold memoirs from the old school British era, used to be the economy’s powerhouses on their own. The cities are home to two steel plants of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) – Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP) and IISCO Steel Plant (ISP), and a subsidiary – Alloy Steel Plant in Durgapur – some of the oldest steel plants and largest manufacturers of steel in the country. IISCO is the country’s oldest integrated steel plant. The SAIL plants have been the focus of modernization in the state. But the Indian government had <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/govt-shelves-plan-for-strategic-sale-of-sails-durgapur-alloy-steels-plant-3540461.html">plans</a> to sell the Alloy Steel Plant as a part of a strategic disinvestment. However, the sale has currently been deferred. As economic fortunes fade, the highlight of the 2019 election in this industrial belt, with joblessness and hopelessness, is the clash between two spent stars from the film world. In Asansol, incumbent MP Babul Supriyo from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who <a href="https://www.huffingtonpost.in/entry/moon-moon-sen-repeat-her-bankura-magic-in-asansol_in_5cc28f66e4b0817069670e75">won</a> by a majority of 70,000 votes, this time faces Bengal’s favourite – Moon Moon Sen from the Trinamool Congress (TMC). TMC has <a href="https://www.dnaindia.com/india/report-asansol-lok-sabha-constituency-candidates-for-2019-ls-poll-past-results-all-updates-2743974">never</a> won a seat from Asansol. Sen, who entered politics during the last general elections in 2014, had defeated CPI(M)’s Basudeb Acharia from Bankura, a constituency from where Acharia had won 9 times. Meanwhile, in Durgapur the sitting MP from TMC Mamtaz Sanghamita faces a tough competition from SS Ahluwalia, BJP’s long standing leader who currently has a seat in the Lok Sabha from Darjeeling. And there’s also a lot at stake. Asansol has been a victim of communal violence, after riots erupted in March 2018 on Ram Navami. Even today, the violence is at the <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/other-states/communal-divide-to-the-fore-in-asansol/article26960631.ece">core </a>of political campaigning in the city. The other issue that bothers the region is jobs. Illegal mining, which is common in the area, has been put to a stop during the elections, putting thousands of miners out of jobs. According to a <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/pti-stories/with-curb-on-illegal-mining-out-of-job-miners-in-west-bengal-mull-nota-119042800233_1.html">PTI report</a>, these miners will be voting NOTA as a sign of protest. Sail’ing in history Famous for being the industrial zones of West Bengal, the two cities, which are less than 50 kilometres away from each other, house two steel plants of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) – Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP) and IISCO Steel Plant (ISP). And they are rich in history too. Queen Elizabeth had visited the Durgapur Steel Plant in 1961. While the Durgapur Steel Plant has a production capacity of 1.8 Million Ton Per Annum (MTPA), the IISCO Steel Plant has a capacity for production of 4.26 lakh tonnes of saleable steel and 2.54 lakh tonnes of pig iron annually, according to the official website. From then to now, the two steel plants have been a part of many historical things in India – including being one of the biggest suppliers of steel to the defence in India. The Durgapur steel plant recently made <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/defence/sail-supplies-steel-for-indian-armys-dhanush/articleshow/68809831.cms">news</a> for supplying steel to the Indian army to make the first homegrown artillery gun Dhanush. Asansol and Durgapur are also home to many other private industries’ manufacturing units. New Delhi, Dec 13 () The Coal Ministry on Friday said it is considering allotment of six coal mines that have been marked for end-uses like power, iron and steel and sale of coal. 
 The ministry had started allotment process for 15 coal mines for various specified end-use such as in power and iron &amp; steel sectors. 
 In the allotment process, applications were received in the case of six out of 15 coal mines, the coal ministry said in a release.
 On the basis of evaluation of applications received in the allotment process, six mines namely Durgapur II Taraimar/Durgapur II Sariya, Mandakini, Utkal C, Sugia Closed Mine and Tokisud North are under consideration for the allotment, the coal ministry said.
 The mines will add over 5 million tonnes (MT) coal per annum to the country's coal output besides reducing dependence of industries on imported coal, the ministry said.
 "These mines will add more than 5 MT coal per annum and boost the coal production in the country and reduce the dependence of industries on imported coal. This will also generate about Rs 15,000 crore revenue for state governments where the mines are located besides royalties and other applicable taxes," according to the ministry statement. ABI HRS

A quick look at the Blinkit (Grofers) site shows that their services aren’t available in Agra, Ahmedabad, Panipat, Rohtak, Allahabad, Durgapur (West Bengal), and Vadodara. <ul><li>With the West Bengal assembly elections all set to begin on March 27, we take a look at all the TMC legislators who left the party to join the BJP.</li><li>Surprisingly, out of the 34 legislators who joined its ranks after leaving the TMC, BJP has given tickets to only 13 of them.</li><li>This includes heavyweights like Suvendu Adhikari, who was a close aide of chief minister Mamata Banerjee.</li><li>Some of these nominations have also caused anger in the BJP cadre.</li></ul>As the race to the West Bengal elections heats up, there has been a flurry of leaders from the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) joining the ranks of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The list of leaders leaving TMC for the BJP includes some prominent names like Suvendu Adhikari, Mukul Roy and celebrity-turned-politician Mithun Chakraborty. The West Bengal assembly elections are scheduled to be held in eight phases between March 27 to April 29. In total, 34 TMC legislators have left the party to join the BJP – either due to differences with the party, being denied a ticket this time or due to the belief that their future lies with the BJP, not TMC. Surprisingly, out of the 34 legislators who joined its cadre, the saffron party has given tickets to only 13 of them. This is the constituency where the current chief minister Mamata Banerjee will have a face-off with Suvendu Adhikari, her former trusted aide and one of the main faces of the Nandigram movement. It was the Nandigram movement -- protests against the then government’s land acquisition efforts for a special economic zone (SEZ) -- that helped the TMC and Mamata Banerjee end the 34-year rule of the Left Front. Will this assembly election once again prove to be the end of another rule – this time, TMC’s? Time will tell, but it shows the importance of this assembly seat for both the parties. Krishnanagar North – Mukul Roy vs Koushani Mukherjee Mukul Roy, the former right-hand man of Mamata Banerjee, will be contesting from the Krishnanagar North seat. This will be Roy’s first election in 20 years – his last was in 2001 from the Jagatdal assembly constituency where he lost to Haripada Biswas. Roy will be contesting against Koushani Mukherjee, actor-turned-politician who joined the TMC in January, this year. Domjur – Rajib Banerjee vs Kalyanendu Ghosh Rajib Banerjee, former minister in Mamata Banerjee’s cabinet joined the BJP in January this year. He was elected twice from the Domjur constituency – in 2011 and again in 2016. He will be facing off against TMC’s Kalyanendu Ghosh. Bally – Baishali Dalmiya vs Dr. Rana Chatterjee Baishali Dalmiya was expelled from the TMC for speaking out against the party. She is the daughter of late Jagmohan Dalmiya, former cricket administrator and BCCI president. She will be taking on Dr. Rana Chatterjee from TMC. Diamond Harbour – Dipak Halder vs Pannalal Halder Dipak Halder, a two-time TMC legislator quit the party after speaking out for months against it. He said he was “not being allowed to work for the masses” since 2017. He joined BJP in February, this year. Dipak Halder and Pannalal Halder are not related to each other. Singur – Rabindranath Bhattacharya vs Becharam Manna Rabindranath Bhattacharya quit TMC earlier this month and is being fielded by the BJP from the Singur constituency, despite strong opposition by the party’s cadre who have accused him of getting them arrested when he was the TMC legislator. Ranaghat Uttar Paschim – Partha Sarathi Chatterjee vs Sankar Singha The 62-year-old Partha Sarathi Chatterjee was a former TMC legislator from Ranaghat in 2011. He lost the seat in 2016 to Sankar Singha, who fought on a Congress ticket. Interestingly, Singha has joined TMC and will be defending his seat this year. Jagatdal – Arindam Bhattacharya vs Somnath Shyam Arindam Bhattacharya, a lawyer by profession, will be fighting for the Jagatdal seat on a BJP ticket. He currently represents the Santipur constituency, but this year will see him switch to Jagatdal. Natabari – Mihir Goswami vs Rabindra Nath Ghosh Mihir Goswami, who currently represents the Cooch Behar Dakshin constituency, will switch to Natabari and fight on a BJP ticket. He will take on TMC’s Rabindra Nath Ghosh, who is the incumbent Natabari legislator. Monteswar – Saikat Panja vs Siddiqullah Chowdhury Saikat Panja is the incumbent legislator from the Monteswar constituency, which he won with an overwhelming majority in the 2016 by-election. He will be facing off TMC’s Siddiqullah Chowdhury, who is also the West Bengal president of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind. Kalna – Biswajit Kundu vs Deboprasad Bag The saffron party is fielding Biswajit Kundu, who joined BJP earlier this year. Ironically, Kundu’s nomination triggered a mass switch of 70 party workers to the TMC, who protested against Kundu’s corruption. Pandabeswar – Jitendra Tiwari vs Narendranath Chakraborty Jitendra Tiwari, a TMC heavyweight, joined the BJP after rebelling against the TMC leadership. His entry was initially opposed by BJP minister and popular singer Babul Supriyo, given that both the politicians had faced off in the Asansol constituency earlier. Durgapur Purba – Diptangshu Chowdhury vs Pradip Mazumdar Diptangshu Chowdhury, another senior TMC leader and former advisor to the chief minister, left TMC to fight on a BJP ticket from the Durgapur Purba constituency. Interestingly, Chowdhury was earlier with the BJP before switching to the TMC in 2017.
