The local kirana store or India’s largest retail chain, all of them are keen on getting a piece of the <keyword id="1410674" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="online-grocery-delivery" source="Orion">online grocery delivery</keyword> market. DMart, for instance, has set up its app and pick-up centers for home delivery after handling its bulk delivery orders during the pandemic. Reliance Retail too stepped into this delivery business with its app, <keyword id="8506093" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jiomart" source="Orion">JioMart</keyword> with little success, though it has also invested in Dunzo. Time does matter When it comes to the delivery market, it’s not about what you deliver, how you deliver but it’s all about ‘when’ you deliver. Most of the online <keyword id="2709620" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="grocery-delivery" source="Orion">grocery delivery</keyword> hinges on timing which is why quick commerce companies are walking away with a lion’s share of the pie. “Grocery shopping in India’s major cities is set to undergo a never-seen-before tec(h)tonic shift led by quick commerce platforms,” said a report by JM Financial. Online grocery market has two segments -- quick commerce and scheduled e-grocery. Only Jiomart, Bigbasket and DMart are scheduled e-grocery stores, all the other platforms are in a race of quick delivery business. And the segment seems to be ruled by the ‘10-30-minute delivery’ offered by platforms like <keyword id="6358977" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="swiggy" source="Orion">Swiggy</keyword>, Blinkit, Zepto and Dunzo. Most of the retail chains who intend to deliver groceries however have a one-day lag period between order and delivery. Added to that, quick commerce platforms are addressing multiple consumer pain-points such as convenience, speed, curated assortment, value, and round-the clock standardized services. Online food ordering business is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/retail/news/grocery-business-is-like-poison-pill-for-zomato-after-failing-miserably-two-times-as-per-analysts/articleshow/92202068.cms">aiding growth in the e-grocery as well</a>. Customers who order food online for convenience, wider selection, discounts and standardized customer support are also likely to be more amenable to ordering grocery items online for the very same reasons. This opens up cross-sell opportunities for food-techs like Swiggy and Blinkit, which is merging with Zomato. Paan to curds - quick commerce delivers it all A February 2022 Survey by LocalCircles indicates that 71% of the households used q-commerce platforms to either order daily use items such as milk, bread, eggs, curd, fruits and vegetables, etc. They also ordered indulgence items such as soft drinks, ice creams, chocolates and paan. Though, only 29% of the surveyed households used q-commerce for ‘all their grocery’ purchases. For the bulk purchases however, the large format stores are still in the running as people are going to the stores. DMart is still aggressively opening stores in parts of the country to get back to pre-covid levels. “We believe it will look to accelerate store expansion and the benefit of recent expansion is yet to fully kick in – revenue intensity is lower than pre-Covid levels,” said analysts at ICICI Securities post its March quarter earnings. Redseer estimates the grocery market size in India was worth $620 billion in 2021, which is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8% over the next four years to reach over $850 billion by 2025. Quick commerce is all set for the long haul Quick commerce players are also vying for a bigger piece of the entire pie. The quick ordering might start with fresher foods like fruits and vegetables, meat, dairy and other ready-to-cook items; and also indulgence categories like chocolates, biscuits, snacking items, cold drinks, and tobacco. But it could extend to others too. “We also expect grocery staples, cooking essentials, medicines, baby and personal care, home care and pet care, amongst others, to pick up as consumers become more habituated to ordering through the platforms,” said the JM Financial report. Recently, Swiggy raised $700 million for quick-commerce grocery service Instamart. Zomato poured $150 million into quick commerce startup Blinkit. Zepto raised $200 million and lastly Reliance Industries also caught the quick commerce train by investing $200 million in Dunzo. This also means that competitive intensity is likely to be severe in the near term, between them and also with the big retailers. “Only those platforms that have very strong customer recall, robust back-end supply chain and/or strong balance sheet are likely to survive this battle of attrition,” said the report. JM Financial believes that quick delivery platforms have what it takes to disrupt the unorganized grocery market including neighbourhood kirana stores or even retail chains like DMart in large cities. The bbnow service will sell over 3,000 products, the company said in a statement. Besides this, BigBasket would also be focusing on one hour delivery through bbexpresss within a 6 kilometre radius of the store. The bbexpress would offer over 8,000 products. The company will rely on its own dark stores for these operations. Dark stores are micro-fulfillment centres dedicated to rapid online order fulfillment. There is no cap on the number of products that one can order through these platforms, but typical order sizes average between 3-5 products and around ₹400 for the <keyword id="12724312" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="quick-commerce" source="Orion">quick commerce</keyword> deliveries, the company said. BigBasket will be a part of Tata Digital’s super app TataNeu. The Tata Enterprise company also emphasised that they have built a “massive” delivery network across India and it is constantly in expansion state. BigBasket launched a chain of offline stores in 2021 and 90 of them are already operational. The company now plans to launch 700 more such stores by the end of 2022. BigBasket was launched in 2010 as an online grocery supermarket. The company today covers an entire spectrum of grocery retail through quick-commerce, physical stores, alongside online grocery sales through the main BigBasket platform. “Apart from consumers who plan and buy their monthly groceries from bigbasket, there is a huge user base comprising those who make unplanned purchases, top-ups and impulse purchases. For impulse and emergency purchases, the bbnow service with its 10-20-minute delivery window is a great option…,” Hari Menon, cofounder and chief executive officer of BigBasket, said in a statement. However, quick commerce has had its set of detractors, and recently Hari Menon, the chief executive officer (CEO) of BigBasket stirred up the controversy with his comments against quick commerce. While BigBasket has its quick commerce avatar called BigBasketNow, it delivers its groceries in 30 minutes. ‘Qcommerce was thrust on customers’ Grover’s negative opinion on the economics of quick commerce delivery has another backer. Last week at the Sharrp Summit, Menon said that consumers never wanted quick delivery, and that it was thrust on them. A sensible business case involves 15-30 minutes to make a delivery, he added. “Quick commerce has certain dynamics required for unit economics to work, which means you need a high density of orders, it will be cut off at some point. Indians take to quick commerce According to Redseer, Indian consumers are taking to quick commerce, and the adoption is much better than in other countries. India has a quick commerce penetration of 13% versus 7% in China and 3% in EU, respectively. The current market size of quick commerce in India is $5.5 billion – and as of now caters to only 1% of the total domestic grocery market. Redseer also says that the total addressable market (TAM) of quick commerce is at $45 billion. “Emerging as one of the fastest growing e-commerce models, quick commerce is fundamentally changing consumer purchase behaviour and the grocery retail market on the whole by providing faster delivery options (in as little as ten minutes) as well as a more convenience-driven shopping experience,” said the Redseer report. Quick commerce players who have set up dark stores that aid quick deliveries, cater to the mid to upper middle-class consumers, and also offer an eclectic mix of products —- in order to stay ahead of the competition from local kiranas. As of now however, around 70% of all quick commerce purchases are top-up orders. Many platforms have informed that milk, eggs and more are the most searched and purchased items for fast deliveries. Stockup purchases like staples and packaged foods are either purchased offline or through online e-commerce. Apart from the time and the economics, the war of words around e-commerce is about average order value (AOV). Many players are trying to push for it by offering free delivery for larger sized orders. A few services like Instamart charge different delivery prices for faster delivery of services. Moreover, the funding winter which has been taking the wind off the sails for most startups has also had its effect on quick commerce players. Moreover, grocery delivery – fast or otherwise – itself is becoming a tougher business to be in. JioMart Express, which offers 90-minute deliveries, has recently shut this service. At the same time last year, fast delivery service Ola Dash folded up. This, however, can be a blessing in disguise, say analysts. “Competitive intensity has slowed down in quick commerce, which gives incumbents room to build scale moats; and the expectation that the life cycle value of the incremental transacting user in quick commerce could be significantly better than in food delivery at the current stage,” says a recent report by JM Financial. When the dust settles on the war of words around quick commerce, it will be incumbent on the existing players to prove their detractors wrong by delivering profitable businesses. Sai Ganesh, Marketing Lead, Dunzo tells us how this lockdown has changed his role as a marketing officer.</li></ul>With India’s healthcare system severely stretched, many brands have been leveraging their social media presence to either amplify citizens’ SoS for ICU beds or to spread awareness around vaccination registration. One such brand is Dunzo. It was quick to convert its social media page into an SoS helpline for its users. Very early on during this on-going pandemic, Dunzo also reminded consumers that we are all in this together by swallowing its pride and uplifting its competitors in its social media posts. <div type="javascript" title="Instagram" contenttype="Image"><cdata><![CDATA[ ]]></cdata></div> Lately, Dunzo has stayed away from all promotional posts. After the cases started rising in India during April 2021, Dunzo decided to pause, reflect, rework its strategies and most importantly, prioritise consumer interest. It was after an internal discussion that Dunzo decided it should use its reach to help people, who are crying out for help. Before the pandemic, organisations were looking for CMOs who were data-driven, focused on the customer, and were able to anticipate needs people didn’t even know they had. Today, a CMO is also required to be agile because consumer needs are changing overnight and most importantly, the need of the hour is a marketing leader who is empathetic and caring. CMOs set the right tone for the organisation at the top and lead the brand to connect with consumers. They are also expected to protect the health, safety, and well-being of their employees. And when all of this is over, it will be brands like Dunzo that will be remembered by consumers for its humanitarian aid and looked up as examples by SMBs and start-ups. So, as a leader who is supervising these much-needed marketing activities during a crisis, we reached out to Sai Ganesh, Marketing Lead, Dunzo to understand how this lockdown has changed his role as a marketing officer. Last year, we were getting used to the WFH setup, taking care of our mental health while doing great work. This year, it has gotten more exhausting personally to witness the pandemic unfolding the way it has, so we do ensure that each of us takes regular breaks to recuperate. People who are known to us have passed away or are struggling to survive, so it's definitely overwhelming. For a creative team especially it's even more difficult to work during these times. So, we have prioritised self-care and helping others over everything else for now. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Q. We saw that last year and this year, consumers don't want brands to be “salesy", but they also want brands to stand up and help others in trying times. The power users on Social media call out brands that are tone-deaf / not able to take a stance during tough times. So yes, consumers are going to call you for inaction so "No communication" is a bad idea. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Q. Meanwhile, what might make one platform win over the other is how they choose to communicate with their consumers. Dunzo, that launched Dunzo Daily in nine areas of Bengaluru in July launched with the promise of delivering products to your doorsteps within 15 minutes. It now has a fool-proof plan to make itself heard. Last week, we saw Dunzo launch a film, the first in a series, featuring actor <keyword id="9271" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sunny-deol" source="Orion">Sunny Deol</keyword>. And to make sure that its message reaches its target audiences, the platform has come up with a 360 degree campaign to make the right kind of noise. The campaign “This is a repositioning exercise for Dunzo which has primarily been known for its quick pick-up and drop service for all categories. But now we're trying to focus on positioning Dunzo as the best delivery service to get your groceries fresh and fast. And since it's primarily a Bangalore campaign to begin with, we're looking to scale operations in Bangalore. It’s a city that has multiple user personas, there’s the native audience who have lived here for the longest period of time and then there are people who have moved into the city from other parts of the country for work. Our campaign is aimed at addressing all the different user personas,” said Sai Ganesh, Head - Brand at Dunzo. <div type="Youtube" id="Vx0m1zgZqbM" title="Dunzo Daily Campaign | Tareekh Pe Tareekh" thumbUrl="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/Vx0m1zgZqbM/mqdefault.jpg"></div> The campaign, which will feature a host of stars from both Hindi and Kannada movies, is aimed at highlighting the hassle of ordering groceries and how Dunzo will solve the problem for its users. In the past few months, we have also observed new-age players making use of nostalgia to reach out to consumers. So is Dunzo worried the new campaign will be compared to CRED’s IPL ads? “Not at all. We started working on this campaign last year, even before CRED’s second phase of campaign. I think the campaigns look similar because both the teams at CRED and Dunzo are largely digital-natives. We understand what works on Instagram, Twitter and the social media. We don't think TV commercials or Outdoor creatives first. Doing unexpected things on social media has a huge payoff and that's the reason why there's a similar train of thought between the two and that's just because we know what works on social media,” he explained. The growth of Dunzo Daily Since July, Dunzo Daily has been witnessing around 25% growth week on week. To fulfill its promise of delivery in 19 minutes, Dunzo is leveraging mini-warehouses strategically located across each neighborhood in the city. But then, a few other players in the segment are also speeding up their delivery game, so how will Dunzo make sure consumers choose them over their competitors, and what role will communication play there? “Our content speaks for itself. The kind of content we've created and the mediums we’re using help us stand out. We also have an audio signature tune now. And this sonic identity will be a part of the product. On the app, when the delivery partner leaves the store or is at your doorstep, you will get a notification. We're trying to differentiate the brand at every touch-point possible and marketing is not going to be left behind as well,” added Ganesh. For Dunzo, the plan for now is to grow Dunzo Daily to 4X in Bangalore, to provide a superior experience, set up more stores so that the delivery time gets further reduced. Once the model gets proven in Bangalore, the platform will take it to other cities. Dunzo’s marketing game Dunzo had been launched back in 2015 as a <keyword id="790242" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="whatsapp" source="Orion">WhatsApp</keyword> group where CEO Kabeer Biswas would himself get things delivered to people on the group. Within four months, the initiative blew up on Whatsapp and Biswas had close to 10,000 users, without spending any money on advertising. For a long time, the growth Dunzo witnessed was solely owing to word-of-mouth. However, as the team started scaling up, Dunzo focused on building an in-house brands team. Today Dunzo does all its creative work in-house. On what has worked in their favor from a marketing perspective, Ganesh said, “We haven't hired an agency, everything is done in-house. Building this team of digital-natives who are so good at everything they do, has been a very important part of our journey. An interesting thing about our social media journey is, people organically used to say good things about Dunzo and our delivery partners and we decided to use this tactic where we would incentivize people to say good things about Dunzo, which is pretty much what our Twitter game is. If you say something good about us, we make a wordplay on your name and that is something our consumers look forward to.” Dunzo is also one of the players on social media that has aced moment marketing and its take on topical events usually keeps it in the news too, which has helped them build their brand narrative too. “Over the last few years, we have been able to leverage moment marketing well, to the extent that someone was telling me that advertising agencies don’t like Dunzo because they get our creatives sent to them by their clients who ask them to come up with similar creatives. It’s a big compliment for us. We have become the leaders of moment marketingand that is creating a real pull for the brand,” said Ganesh.
