This comes after Jha stepped down from the board of the cash-strapped startup Dunzo last year. Despite raising around $500 million, Dunzo has struggled to secure additional investment and manage payroll. Dunzo, on the other hand, was making headlines earlier this year for facing various financial struggles. The company’s top investor Lightbox also exited in May this year. On the other hand, the company is reportedly experiencing a cash crunch and owes approximately Rs 11.4 crore to various vendors, including Google India, Nilenso, Clover Ventures, Facebook India, Cupshup, Koo, and Glance. <h2>About Together Fund</h2>Together Fund, from which Jha is reportedly going to raise funds for his new venture, has invested in over 20 companies across various SaaS sectors, including recruitment, sales intelligence, marketing, healthcare, and cloud solutions for connected devices. “Our areas of focus span across SaaS, enterprise software, developer tools, open source software, cloud-native infrastructure and API-first businesses. We typically invest early (seed, pre A or series A) to help founders through the crucial zero-to-one part of their journey,” the company’s website reads. While <keyword id="6354720" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ola" source="Orion">Ola</keyword> and tech-enabled logistics company <keyword id="67819" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="porter" source="Orion">Porter</keyword> scored zero on a scale of 1-10, <keyword id="1042120" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="uber" source="Orion">Uber</keyword> and <keyword id="3275685" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dunzo" source="Orion">Dunzo</keyword> received only one point, according to the 'Fairwork India 2023' report, spearheaded by the Centre for IT and Public Policy (CITAPP) at International Institute of Information Technology Bangalore (IIIT-B), in association with Oxford University. The report evaluated 12 platforms offering location-based services in sectors such as domestic and personal care, logistics, food delivery and transportation, in the country. This year, the report was structured around the theme of discrimination and alienation that often come up in experiences shared by platform workers. In a year that has seen the formulation of a significant regulation based on inputs from workers called The Rajasthan Platform Based <keyword id="7771650" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gig-workers" source="Orion">Gig workers</keyword> (Registration and Welfare Act, 2023, "we hope that highlighting the experiences of workers will point to the structural changes that platforms, consumers and the state alike will need to undertake if the platform economy is to offer its workers decent work," said Professors Balaji Parthasarathy and Janaki Srinivasan, principal investigators. Fairwork assessed platforms against five principles: Fair Pay, Fair Conditions, Fair Contracts, Fair Management, and Fair Representation. Each principle was broken down into two points: a first point and a second point that can only be awarded if the first point has been fulfilled. The report looked at 12 platforms, including Amazon Flex, Bigbasket, BluSmart, Dunzo, Flipkart, Ola, Porter, Swiggy, Uber, Urban Company, Zepto and Zomato. No platform scored more than six out of the maximum of 10 points, and none scored all the first points across the five principles. In its first year of participation, ride-hailing platform aggregator BluSmart scored higher than more established platforms in its sector, with 5 points out of 10. "There is room for cautious optimism that BluSmart's operational model might represent a step towards better conditions for drivers in the platform economy," the report mentioned. Bigbasket, Flipkart and Urban Company were the only platforms with a minimum wage policy to ensure that all their workers earn at least the hourly local minimum wage after factoring in work-related costs. "No platform made the second point of the Fair Pay principle, which requires platforms to provide sufficient evidence that workers earn at least the local living wage after work-related costs," the findings showed. Under the 'Fair Conditions' principle of providing adequate safety equipment and periodic safety training to their workers, Bigbasket, Swiggy, Urban Company, Zepto and Zomato were awarded the second point. Bigbasket, BluSmart, Urban Company, Zepto, and Zomato met the requirements for the second point under 'Fair Contracts' by adopting a change notification clause in their contracts, reducing asymmetries in liability, adopting a code of conduct for their subcontractors, and making the variables of pricing transparent where dynamic pricing was used. Under the 'Fair Management' principle, there was sufficient evidence only from BluSmart and Swiggy to meet the second point. "No platform could be awarded a point for 'Fair Representation' principle this year," said the report.

DMart, for instance, has set up its app and pick-up centers for home delivery after handling its bulk delivery orders during the pandemic. Time does matter When it comes to the delivery market, it’s not about what you deliver, how you deliver but it’s all about ‘when’ you deliver. Added to that, quick commerce platforms are addressing multiple consumer pain-points such as convenience, speed, curated assortment, value, and round-the clock standardized services. Customers who order food online for convenience, wider selection, discounts and standardized customer support are also likely to be more amenable to ordering grocery items online for the very same reasons. This opens up cross-sell opportunities for food-techs like Swiggy and Blinkit, which is merging with Zomato. Paan to curds - quick commerce delivers it all A February 2022 Survey by LocalCircles indicates that 71% of the households used q-commerce platforms to either order daily use items such as milk, bread, eggs, curd, fruits and vegetables, etc. They also ordered indulgence items such as soft drinks, ice creams, chocolates and paan. Though, only 29% of the surveyed households used q-commerce for ‘all their grocery’ purchases. For the bulk purchases however, the large format stores are still in the running as people are going to the stores. DMart is still aggressively opening stores in parts of the country to get back to pre-covid levels. “We believe it will look to accelerate store expansion and the benefit of recent expansion is yet to fully kick in – revenue intensity is lower than pre-Covid levels,” said analysts at ICICI Securities post its March quarter earnings. Redseer estimates the grocery market size in India was worth $620 billion in 2021, which is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8% over the next four years to reach over $850 billion by 2025. Quick commerce is all set for the long haul Quick commerce players are also vying for a bigger piece of the entire pie. The quick ordering might start with fresher foods like fruits and vegetables, meat, dairy and other ready-to-cook items; and also indulgence categories like chocolates, biscuits, snacking items, cold drinks, and tobacco. But it could extend to others too. “We also expect grocery staples, cooking essentials, medicines, baby and personal care, home care and pet care, amongst others, to pick up as consumers become more habituated to ordering through the platforms,” said the JM Financial report. Recently, Swiggy raised $700 million for quick-commerce grocery service Instamart. Zomato poured $150 million into quick commerce startup Blinkit. Zepto raised $200 million and lastly Reliance Industries also caught the quick commerce train by investing $200 million in Dunzo. This also means that competitive intensity is likely to be severe in the near term, between them and also with the big retailers. “Only those platforms that have very strong customer recall, robust back-end supply chain and/or strong balance sheet are likely to survive this battle of attrition,” said the report. JM Financial believes that quick delivery platforms have what it takes to disrupt the unorganized grocery market including neighbourhood kirana stores or even retail chains like DMart in large cities. While most of them provide 10-minute deliveries, others too offer lightning-fast deliveries of a wide range of groceries — catching the imagination of consumers. However, quick commerce has had its set of detractors, and recently Hari Menon, the chief executive officer (CEO) of BigBasket stirred up the controversy with his comments against quick commerce. While BigBasket has its quick commerce avatar called BigBasketNow, it delivers its groceries in 30 minutes. ‘Qcommerce was thrust on customers’ Grover’s negative opinion on the economics of quick commerce delivery has another backer. Last week at the Sharrp Summit, Menon said that consumers never wanted quick delivery, and that it was thrust on them. A sensible business case involves 15-30 minutes to make a delivery, he added. “Quick commerce has certain dynamics required for unit economics to work, which means you need a high density of orders, it will be cut off at some point. Indians take to quick commerce According to Redseer, Indian consumers are taking to quick commerce, and the adoption is much better than in other countries. India has a quick commerce penetration of 13% versus 7% in China and 3% in EU, respectively. The current market size of quick commerce in India is $5.5 billion – and as of now caters to only 1% of the total domestic grocery market. Redseer also says that the total addressable market (TAM) of quick commerce is at $45 billion. “Emerging as one of the fastest growing e-commerce models, quick commerce is fundamentally changing consumer purchase behaviour and the grocery retail market on the whole by providing faster delivery options (in as little as ten minutes) as well as a more convenience-driven shopping experience,” said the Redseer report. Quick commerce players who have set up dark stores that aid quick deliveries, cater to the mid to upper middle-class consumers, and also offer an eclectic mix of products —- in order to stay ahead of the competition from local kiranas. As of now however, around 70% of all quick commerce purchases are top-up orders. Many platforms have informed that milk, eggs and more are the most searched and purchased items for fast deliveries. Stockup purchases like staples and packaged foods are either purchased offline or through online e-commerce. Apart from the time and the economics, the war of words around e-commerce is about average order value (AOV). Many players are trying to push for it by offering free delivery for larger sized orders. A few services like Instamart charge different delivery prices for faster delivery of services. Moreover, the funding winter which has been taking the wind off the sails for most startups has also had its effect on quick commerce players. Moreover, grocery delivery – fast or otherwise – itself is becoming a tougher business to be in. JioMart Express, which offers 90-minute deliveries, has recently shut this service. At the same time last year, fast delivery service Ola Dash folded up. This, however, can be a blessing in disguise, say analysts. “Competitive intensity has slowed down in quick commerce, which gives incumbents room to build scale moats; and the expectation that the life cycle value of the incremental transacting user in quick commerce could be significantly better than in food delivery at the current stage,” says a recent report by JM Financial. When the dust settles on the war of words around quick commerce, it will be incumbent on the existing players to prove their detractors wrong by delivering profitable businesses. Charging a minimum delivery fee of ₹29, customers can choose 2-hour slots or get their orders within 90 minutes between 6 am and midnight. Flipkart Quick will begin operations in select locations in Bengaluru – Whitefield, Panathur, HSR Layout, BTM Layout, Banashankari, KR Puram, and Indiranagar. “While we start with our dark store (no walk-in) model, wherein we enable sellers to store inventory close to the consumer; this model has the potential of encouraging local entrepreneurship and enabling new business strategies and partnerships. Today, with Flipkart Quick - our Hyperlocal capability, we have the potential to bring together the whole network of neighbourhood Kirana stores onto our platform with just a click,” said Sandeep Karwa, Vice-President, Flipkart. This adds to the string of latest releases from Flipkart – it recently bought out Walmart’s India business, forayed into social commerce with its refurbished goods platform 2GUD and also acquired a stake in Arvind Fashion for ₹260 crore. However, Flipkart’s hyperlocal foray comes at a time when the sector has seen the entry of JioMart – Reliance’s bet on e-commerce, and already had the presence of the likes of Google-backed Dunzo, SoftBank-backed Grofers, and BigBasket. Been in the making for over a year Flipkart has been making several bets to ready its hyperlocal delivery service. In December 2019, Flipkart had invested in logistics platform Shadowfax. Kalyan Krishnamurthy, chief executive officer, Flipkart had then said that the partnership with Shadowfax will help build a strong foundation for hyperlocal deliveries, by including kirana stores. In the same month, Flipkart and Walmart had invested an undisclosed amount in the fresh produce delivery startup Ninjacart. In May 2019, the e-commerce company had launched Flipkart Supermart to foray into grocery delivery. Flipkart offers 90-minute delivery as competition from JioMart, Dunzo, BigBasket heats up

Reliance Retail-based <keyword id="3275685" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="dunzo" source="Orion">Dunzo</keyword>s B2B logistics arm, Dunzo for Business (D4B), on Thursday announced its partnership with the governments Open Network for <keyword id="1664180" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="digital-commerce" source="Orion">Digital Commerce</keyword> (<keyword id="5862596" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ondc" source="Orion">ONDC</keyword>) to provide last-mile delivery services to local enterprises on the ONDC network. D4B has a fleet of over 75,000 delivery partners, connecting over 20,000 merchants to customers and running millions of orders every month. GrowthFalcons is one of the first businesses D4B has serviced on ONDC. "We are very happy to have a strong logistics provider like Dunzo for Business on the ONDC network. This partnership will accelerate our efforts to make last-mile logistics accessible to a wider audience of buyers and sellers across India," said T Koshy, CEO, ONDC. D4B's key merchants include Fynd, Wellness Forever, DotPe, EatClub and Magicpin, among others. "Starting our journey with key metros, we will scale our services to more cities and become the backbone for intra-city deliveries in the Indian e-commerce ecosystem", said Dalvir Suri, Co-founder, Dunzo, and Head of Dunzo for Business (D4B). Dunzo is present in the top eight cities in India and has over 10 million users. It is backed by <keyword id="58448" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="reliance-retail" source="Orion">Reliance Retail</keyword>, Google, Blume Ventures, Aspada Investments, LightBox Ventures, STIC Ventures and 3L Capital, among others. With ONDC, a Unified Payments Interface (UPI)-type initiative of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to promote open networks, the government is trying to create the largest interoperable open platform in a bid to break e-commerce monopolies and build a more democratised digital marketplace by bringing micro, small, and medium enterprise as well as small traders online. Dunzo earlier this year raised $240 million to expand its footprint in India.ONDC recently boarded Go Frugal, Paytm, Digit, PhonePe and Loadshare, among others. E-commerce platform Snapdeal is set to debut on ONDC this month.

Its losses have grown eight times over, whereas its revenue even with a five-fold increase is still minuscule compared to its losses. According to <a href="https://www.livemint.com/companies/start-ups/dunzo-s-fy19-losses-up-by-8x-at-rs169-crore-11572437539021.html">reports,</a> Dunzo’s total revenue for the year stood at ₹3.5 crore, with ₹2.8 crore coming in from “other income”. The Google-backed Dunzo recently raised $45 million in a series D round from Lightbox, 3L Capital and others. It was reportedly valued at $200 million then. Dunzo was Google’s first direct investment in India. Dunzo is registering half a million monthly transactions but in an <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/advertising/brands/article/dunzo-is-aiming-at-achieving-17-million-monthly-transactions-by-the-end-of-next-year-with-minimal-marketing/articleshow/71649421.cms">earlier interview</a> with Business Insider, Kabeer Biswas, co-founder and CEO of the company had said that they are aiming for 17 million monthly transactions by the end of 2020. But the four-year-old startup also has new and big competition. The much more experienced and heavily funded unicorn Swiggy entered its category with <keyword id="8016811" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Swiggy-Go">Swiggy Go</keyword>. Now, Swiggy entered the space with a ready fleet of delivery executives and an established name, which would make it difficult for Dunzo as it aims to expand to 20 cities.

<ul><li>While we all are watching, worrying about everything that’s happening outside from behind the closed doors, delivery personnels from Dunzo, Medlife and Housejoy are risking their lives everyday to make sure we get our daily essentials and stay safe.</li><li>We reached out to their marketing heads of these brands to understand the challenges these players have faced in the past 21 days, from delivering products to communicating with consumers and here is how they are functioning in the new normal. </li></ul>While we are all scared and anxious to step out even for a few minutes, brands like Dunzo, Medlife and Housejoy are making sure that we are all safely cooped at home. From catering to the ever-increasing demand to coming up with creative solutions like contact-less delivery that ensure the safety of their consumers, as well as their delivery partners, these brands have embraced the challenges—as and when they come—with open arms. To prepare for the long haul, they are welcoming new delivery personnel, introducing fresh HR policies, sanitising their storing facilities, and reminding their consumers to take good care of themselves by washing their hands and maintaining safe physical distance -- on social media every day. However, things haven’t been simple for these players on the ground. In the first few days of the lockdown, owing to confusion and lack of clarity around guidelines, it was difficult for a lot of these players to function smoothly. Telling us what kind of challenges Medlife faced during the first few days of the lockdown, Meera Iyer, CMO, Medlife, said, “The lockdown has been quite a difficult time for Medlife. In terms of business, our traffic and demand has more than doubled. Organically, a lot of people have been coming online and wanting to order medicines as well as use our e-consultation service. But unfortunately, on the other side, the lockdown has meant total disruption on the ground for our operations team. The supply chain particularly was severely impacted in the first 2 weeks. Things are better now and slowly coming back to normal but it was the case of 2X the number of orders and pretty much 50% capacity on the ground, thereby allowing us to service around 25% of our customers. So customer experience went for a toss during this period.” Despite the limitations that the lockdown brought, it also brought with it a lot of growth opportunities for brands like Dunzo. Elaborating, Sai Ganesh, Head Marketing &amp; Creative, Dunzo said, “Groceries used to be our main category earlier and demand in that category has gone through the roof. We have seen significant organic growth, especially in grocery, medicine, meat and fish. That’s been the biggest opportunity where we are seeing a lot of organic traffic and new users coming in. Housejoy, which is a tech-driven construction, renovation, interiors and Home Maintenance company, rose to the occasion and started delivering essentials. Telling us how they arrived at it, Arpan Biswas, Vice President - Marketing, Housejay, said, “We saw an opportunity as the big players, who deliver essential services, have seen a growth of 6X. However, a lot of their delivery personnel left for their hometowns. So we have internally we offer home services and some of them don’t fall in essentials, so we have supply and tech in place. We just had to add groceries to it. We took a couple of weeks to take a call -- we saw an opportunity and thought this might make sense for us! From there, it was quite easy for us. Also, we wanted to make sure our internal delivery guys get to earn a bit and keep their households running. We have seen good growth so far. If it continues, we will think of approaching this category seriously.” In sensitive times such as today, there's always a chance that if brands come out with marketing communications, their intent will be frowned upon. Telling us how Dunzo is treading that line between communicating what’s required and being opportunistic, Ganesh said, “Our marketing communications in the past 45 days is very rarely focusing on selling the value proposition of Dunzo. We have also tried to use what guidelines WHO released for brands to incorporate social distancing, wearing masks, washing hands regularly, etc, so we have tried to use that. After the first lockdown was announced for two weeks, there was a period when users did not care about what your brand had to say. We saw very little engagement in those two weeks. The first two weeks were spent on informing the audience about what's happening, right things to the users and what precautions we are taking. Right now, they are looking for lighter, humourous content. There is a lot of stress right now and social media is a comic relief for them. So, we have moved to lighter content and none of it sells our product.” To help maintain a positive environment on social media and reach out to a wider audience, Dunzo is also looking at exploring TikTok, which, as Ganesh said, is a great way to connect with their delivery partners. Biswas, on the other hand, reminded us that this situation might not end very soon even if the lockdown opens. Therefore, as a marketer, you need to remind your consumers about the do’s and don’ts they need to follow. He further said, “We should think of ourselves as customers, not marketers. When I think of what is my need v/s want, as a customer, it is the essentials. So I would rather stick to delivering essentials and making sure that consumers get the necessary information. You also need to be very patient and see how things turn out in the next two-three months. We should save cash, not burn it in the media. We should rather create content that adds value to our customer’s life.” Moreover, taking care of the health, wellness and hygiene of their delivery partners is also a priority for most of these brands. Talking about all that Medlife has been doing to take care of its partners, Iyer said, “All our fulfillment centres across 15 cities have a doctor. We have thermal scanning for allowing people to come in. Use of masks and periodic sanitizing is mandatory. And we are doing everything to ensure that their commute to the warehouses and back home is also made safe.”
