<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="6355629" type="DEFINITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="google">Google</keyword> announced a new <keyword id="794216" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="undersea-cable">undersea cable</keyword> project on Tuesday.</li><li>Named after American computer scientist <keyword id="2172581" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Grace-Hopper">Grace Hopper</keyword>, the new cable will connect the US with the <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword> and <keyword id="6363645" type="LOCATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="spain">Spain</keyword>.</li><li>Google says it expects the cable to be finished by 2022.</li></ul><p>Google is planning to lay more than 3,000 miles of transatlantic undersea cable by 2022.</p><p>The tech giant announced its new Grace Hopper undersea cable project on Tuesday.</p><p>The Grace Hopper cable, named after the famous US computer scientist, will connect New York to Bude in the UK and Bilbao, Spain. The distance from New York to Bude in Cornwall, England is roughly 3,290 miles.</p><p>In a statement Google said Grace Hopper marks its first private investment in a private subsea cable route to the UK, and its first ever cable route to Spain.</p><p>Google says the Grace Hopper cable is expected to be completed by 2022, and the company will use a new technique to make it more reliable than existing fibre-optic cables.</p><p>"Grace Hopper will incorporate novel optical fiber switching that allows for increased reliability in global communications, enabling us to better move traffic around outages," Google said.</p><p><div type="image" title="Google Curie cable" height="603" width="1158" msid="77217777" hostid="261"></div></p><p>The cable is set to funnel 340-350 terabytes of data per second, which according to Google equates to 17.5 million people streaming 4K videos simultaneously.</p><p>Google already has three privately-owned undersea cables: <keyword id="2674001" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Curie">Curie</keyword>, <keyword id="9657463" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="dunant">Dunant</keyword> and <keyword id="7809653" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="equiano">Equiano</keyword>.</p><p><a href="https://cloud.google.com/blog/products/infrastructure/curie-subsea-cable-set-to-transmit-to-chile-with-a-pit-stop-to-panama">Curie</a> runs down the West coast of the US from Los Angeles all the way down to Valparaiso in Chile, stopping off in Panama, and is already online. <a href="https://cloud.google.com/blog/products/infrastructure/delivering-increased-connectivity-our-first-private-trans-atlantic-subsea-cable">Dunant</a> stretches from Virginia Beach in the US to France, and is expected to become accessible later this year. <a href="https://cloud.google.com/blog/products/infrastructure/introducing-equiano-a-subsea-cable-from-portugal-to-south-africa">Equiano</a> runs from Portugal all the way down the West coast of Africa to Cape Town, South Africa, and is expected to be completed next year.</p>

A Google spokesperson told Insider that the landing was originally scheduled for July. The company said in August it had <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-google-apricot-undersea-cable-japan-asia-internet-2021-8">partnered with Facebook to build a new cable called "Apricot,"</a> which is planned to link six countries in Asia using 7,456 miles of cable.</p><p>Apricot is due to come online in 2024.</p><p>In June, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-announces-us-argentina-undersea-internet-cable-firmina-2021-6">Google announced plans to lay a new cable called "Firmina"</a> running from the US West Coast down to Argentina. The company already has a cable called "Curie," which connects the US West Coast with Panama and Chile. Curie <a href="https://www.capacitymedia.com/articles/3824519/googles-curie-cable-ready-to-transmit">came online in 2019</a>. </p>

The company is also building Curie, which will connect Los Angeles and Chile.</strong></li></ul><p>Google is going under the sea so its cloud infrastructure can better take on rivals Amazon and Microsoft.</p><p>The search engine giant announced on Tuesday that it is building its own private underwater cable between the U.S. and France. The cable will be named Dunant, after Henry Dunant, the founder of the Nobel Peace Prize, who was the first recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.</p><p>Google expects Dunant will be functional in 2020.</p><p><span>"Dunant adds network capacity across the Atlantic, supplementing one of the busiest routes on the internet, and supporting the growth of Google Cloud," Jayne Stowell, strategic negotiator of global infrastructure at Google, wrote in a <a href="https://www.blog.google/products/google-cloud/delivering-increased-connectivity-with-our-first-private-trans-atlantic-subsea-cable/">blog post</a>.</span></p><p>Underwater cables are typically built and maintained by consortiums of companies. For example, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/google-facebook-undersea-cable-2016-10">Google and Facebook teamed up in 2016</a> for an 8,000 mile long cable project bridging Los Angeles and Hong Kong.  </p><p>This time, though, this cable belongs to Google, and Google alone. Indeed, Dunant will be the first trans-Atlantic cable solely owned by a non-telecom company.</p><p>This means that Google has more control over capacity and the route of the cable, giving it an infrastructural edge over competitors like Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services who rely on consortium cables to help their data bridge the Atlantic Ocean. </p><p>While Dunant is Google's first cable spanning that particular ocean, it's the search giant's second privately-owned cable overall.
