<ul class="summary-list"><li>The roads are perilous for NYC's app-based delivery drivers on e-bikes and other micro-mobility vehicles.</li><li>NYC infrastructure lags, with few protected bike lanes or designated moped and e-bike lanes.</li></ul>If you've ordered takeout recently in New York City, chances are your food was whisked to your front door by a delivery driver on an electric bicycle or moped.But what you likely didn't consider when you made your order was that the person hand-delivering your dinner may have risked their life to get it to you.New York City delivery workers who don't use cars have one of the deadliest jobs in the city. There are now more than 65,000 app-based restaurant delivery workers in the city, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/05/05/business/delivery-workers-new-york-bathrooms-ebikes/index.html">about 80%</a> of them use e-bikes and motorbikes.The fatality rate for these workers was at least 36 per 100,000 between January 2021 and June 2022, the city Department of Consumer and Worker Protection <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nyc.gov/assets/dca/downloads/pdf/workers/Delivery-Worker-Study-November-2022.pdf">reported</a>. That's more than 5 times the fatality rate for construction workers in New York City, which was seven per 100,000 in 2020, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bls.gov/iif/state-data/fatal-occupational-injuries-in-new-york-city-2020.htm">according to</a> the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Most driver deaths are a result of traffic crashes, though workers are also subject to a high rate of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/09/nyregion/delivery-workers-robberies-nyc.html">violent robbery</a>.App-based delivery drivers are also being severely injured at extremely high rates. The city report found that 28.7% of e-bike or moped delivery workers experienced injuries that forced them to miss work, lose consciousness, or seek medical care. Complicating matters, delivery drivers are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nyc.gov/assets/dca/downloads/pdf/workers/Delivery-Worker-Public-Hearing-Written-Testimony-061522.pdf">disproportionately immigrants,</a> and many are living in the country illegally, so they avoid reporting these crimes to the police or seeking medical care for fear of deportation.According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, transportation and material-moving jobs have the second-highest fatality rates nationwide after farming, fishing, and forestry.<h2 id="61e96346-a699-43db-ba1b-0176a2336762">Inadequate infrastructure</h2>The increase in bicycles and electric-powered non-car vehicles on the streets is a huge win for the climate and for street safety in general — more efficient, greener transportation and fewer cars and delivery trucks on the roads is a good thing.But New York City's infrastructure is way behind. The roads are designed to move cars and trucks as quickly as possible, with little accountability for dangerous driving and very little protected space for anyone getting around by bike or scooter. Just 3% of the city's roads have protected bike lanes, and just 1% of intersections have red light cameras, Bloomberg recently <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2024-03-11/new-york-city-s-decade-long-battle-for-pedestrian-safety">reported</a>.Delivery drivers aren't the only New Yorkers at high risk of being killed in a traffic accident. Bicycle deaths, overall, hit a 24-year high in 2023. Most of the 30 cyclists who were killed in crashes last year died in collisions with automobiles — mostly trucks or SUVs — on streets without bike lanes, according to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/05/nyregion/nyc-cyclist-deaths-ebike.html">a New York Times analysis</a>.Without sufficient safe infrastructure, cyclists — and all kinds of non-car drivers — opt for sidewalks, where they can disrupt pedestrians, or dangerous roads where they're <a target="_blank" href="https://abc7ny.com/food-deliveryman-killed-cyclist-sunset-park-new-york-city/5001979/">no match for cars</a> and trucks.The surge in delivery drivers on e-bikes, scooters, mopeds, and motorbikes has created some safety and quality-of-life issues for everyone else on the street as well.In January, New York Mayor Eric Adams <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-01-24/nyc-launches-city-office-to-regulate-e-bike-delivery-boom">announced the creation</a> of a new department of sustainable delivery tasked with regulating commercial delivery services that use bikes and other micro-mobility vehicles.The city's Department of Transportation insists it's taking seriously street safety for delivery workers and others using multi-modal transportation. A spokesperson for the department told Business Insider that it built more protected bike lanes last year — 32 miles of them — than all other major US cities combined.But that falls far short of the <a target="_blank" href="https://projects.transalt.org/bikelanes">50 miles of protected lanes</a> it aimed to build last year. The department also noted it's working to expand certain well-used bike lanes and the number of bus-mounted cameras that ticket drivers that block bike and bus lanes.<div type="image" title="A memorial ghost bike stands in memory of Jose Alvarado, a delivery worker killed by a hit-and-run driver in the South Bronx." height="851" width="1280" msid="110701998" hostid="261" sizebytes="259308"></div>Advocates for safer streets say the city needs to do much more to build better infrastructure. They're asking for wider protected bike lanes, or even separate lanes for e-bikes and mopeds, and charging facilities for e-bikes."The City is going backwards on street safety. The number of fatalities and injuries will only continue to rise unless the City matches the huge surge in e-bikes and mopeds with infrastructure improvements, dedicated e-bike lanes, investments in slow and shared streets, and accountability from food delivery companies," New York City Comptroller Brad Lander said in a statement to Business Insider.<h2 id="de5185f6-21dd-4bd9-a400-d90aff2f80bd">Little accountability</h2>App-based delivery workers' status as gig workers — contractors rather than employees — is central to their plight. Food delivery companies — including giants like Uber Eats, Grubhub, and DoorDash — don't have to provide them with benefits, including health insurance.And they didn't have to provide them with minimum pay until last year when the city implemented <a target="_blank" href="https://apnews.com/article/nyc-delivery-workers-minimum-wage-app-45d1fe3a184bc1a49acef647d6cb5758">a minimum wage</a> for app-based restaurant delivery drivers. In April, the mayor announced the hourly wage would be bumped to $19.56 per hour, before tips — a big improvement on the average of $5.39 per hour that workers made before the law went into effect.Ligia Guallpa, executive director of the worker advocacy group the Workers Justice Project, blames food delivery companies for creating unsafe working conditions by incentivizing workers to deliver as many orders as they can as quickly as possible, and to work late at night, during storms, and in other risky conditions. Advocates for delivery workers hope minimum pay will lessen these incentives."The number one reason we have been advocating for fair pay in the app delivery industry is because having dignified pay actually translates into safety on the streets," Guallpa, who was <a target="_blank" href="https://nymag.com/intelligencer/article/new-york-inside-power-list.html">a driving force</a> behind the creation of minimum pay for app workers, told Business Insider. "Minimum pay really means that you can actually drive safely when you're riding to make that delivery."A spokesperson for DoorDash said the company offers all drivers occupational accident insurance, and has a trust and safety team available to support drivers around the clock. Uber similarly insisted the company is "deeply committed to building innovative features, promoting safe behavior on the road, and working with safety experts to raise the bar on safety," according to a spokesperson.Guallpa's group wants to see a slew of other changes to improve worker safety, including boosting worker protections and investments in infrastructure like bike lanes and bike parking, better education for workers and connections to city resources, and stronger enforcement of the employers' obligations.Lander and Guallpa also want the companies to help their joint effort to create "Deliverista hubs" — storefronts and converted newsstands where workers can take breaks, charge their bikes, get training, and be connected with city resources like health insurance. Three hubs are in the works — one near City Hall in lower Manhattan, one on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, and one in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Guallpa said.Keeping delivery workers safe should be a public priority, Guallpa said. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Peloton announced that Ford executive Peter Stern will join the company as its new CEO.</li><li>The fitness company is betting Stern can help turn things around.</li></ul>Peloton is betting that its new CEO can deliver a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/peloton-company-history-rise-fall-2022-2">much-needed turnaround.</a>On Thursday, Peloton announced <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/peloton-new-ceo-ford-apple-exec-peter-stern-2024-10">Ford executive Peter Stern</a> would be joining as its new chief executive in January — the latest in a series of shake-ups for a company that has been struggling after riding a pandemic-era high. After the announcement, the company's stock surged nearly 28% on the day to end at $8.50 a share.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/im-one-of-2800-people-peloton-laid-off-im-shocked-2022-2">Stabilizing Peloton</a> will be a tall order, requiring the company to trim spending and, most importantly, retain its current subscribers, analysts told Business Insider.Even after Thursday's surge, Peloton's share price has <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/peloton-earnings-stock-price-problems-ceo-leaves-layoffs-fitness-fads-2024-5">fallen more than 94%</a> since its peak in 2020, when stay-at-home orders kept people out of gyms and fitness classes. They flocked to the at-home stationary bike brand, which quickly gained a cult following.But by 2021, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/peloton-bike-treadmill-fitness-gym-foley-soulcycle-flywheel-workout-2024-7">supply chain woes had hit the company</a>. Recalls of both bikes and treads damaged its reputation, and as the world opened up again, the novelty of sweating it out at home alone began to wear off."It was a bubble of euphoria in pandemic-induced perception mania," said BMO Capital Markets analyst Simeon Siegel, a longtime Peloton bear who has more recently changed his tune on the company given its focus on profitability. "Peloton's peak market cap was not steeped in reality; it was steeped in hope."<h2 id="702addbb-5a25-41a6-b60b-d5e9868f133b">First order of business</h2>Stern's first order of business will be a basic one: "Get the company into a stable financial state," Neil Saunders, the managing director at GlobalData Retail, told BI over email.The company said Thursday that it wants to make changes to become sustainably profitable.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/peloton-stock-price-subscribers-loss-bike-seat-recall-consumer-spending-2023-8">Retaining subscribers</a> — rather than focusing on growing the base — will be key. The monthly fees that users pay for classes — whether or not they are owners of Peloton's equipment — are the high-margin part of the business, Saunders said.Siegel told BI that his advice for Peloton would be to "bear-hug your brand loyalists. Make sure that people don't churn, because they're incredibly valuable." He said existing subscribers alone drive more than $1 billion in gross profit for the company each year.One of his suggestions involves raising subscription prices for new customers, which would not only increase revenue per member but also be a "nod of appreciation" to the loyal existing subscribers and potentially keep them from canceling. The company currently charges $44 a month plus tax for its <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/fitness/peloton-digital-membership-round-up">all-access membership</a>, $12.99 a month for its App One membership, and $24 a month for its App+ membership.Scott Markman, the founder of MonogramGroup, a global branding agency, said that a focus on the Peloton community will be pivotal.<h2 id="4f687f66-a880-46c1-895c-95d8fe4eb393">Cutting costs</h2>The company will also have to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/peloton-ceo-company-spent-money-on-things-they-shouldnt-have-2022-2">trim spending.</a>"Unlike most turnarounds, the healthy cash flow is already there, we simply suggest Peloton stop spending it," Siegel wrote in a note in May.The company has been on a cost-<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/im-a-peloton-worker-losing-my-job-as-told-to-2022-8">cutting spree</a>, reducing head count, spending less on marketing, closing expensive retail showrooms, and lowering research and development costs.Peloton announced in May 2024 that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/peloton-ceo-steps-down-company-cuts-15-percent-of-staff-2024-5">CEO Barry McCarthy</a> would be stepping down. McCarthy's departure came as the fitness company announced it was cutting around 15% of its workforce.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/peloton-appoints-peter-stern-as-ceo-and-president-1033926903">Stern's background</a> in Apple's subscription services may help. He spent six years at the tech giant, leading businesses like Apple TV+, News+, and Fitness+. Stern helped lead the Apple Fitness+ vertical to millions of members, the company said in a Thursday press release.Any turnaround may not mean a return to those 2020-level highs. Siegel says not to expect the company's market cap to go back to its peak."Peloton is an objectively, wildly successful entrepreneurial startup story," he said. "The problem was it didn't go from zero to today. It went from zero to Mount Everest down to today. Just as people got overly exuberant when Peloton was going up, they got wildly negative when Peloton went down."

However, it has not always been considered among the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bike-safety-policy-bicyclists-killed-streets-asking-congress-for-help-2023-4?_gl=1*16avjdz*_ga*MTY2OTYzOTU1Mi4xNjM5NTgwNzc4*_ga_E21CV80ZCZ*MTY4NzM3MzI4MC4yNjkuMS4xNjg3Mzc1Mjc2LjU0LjAuMA..">safest</a> US cities to bike in, nor among the most equitable, particularly on the South and West sides of the city. Just along Milwaukee Avenue, Chicago's "Hipster Highway," there have been 50 <a href="https://blockclubchicago.org/2022/11/29/life-and-death-in-chicagos-most-dangerous-bike-lane/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported crashes</a> and three deaths since 2020 due to an uptick in traffic, neighborhood density, and reckless driving.A recent study found that on average, Chicago's white neighborhoods had 50% more <a href="https://grist.org/cities/black-chicago-biking-disparities-infrastructure/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">bike lanes</a> than Black neighborhoods. In a September 2021 study, Jesus Barajas, an assistant professor of environmental science and policy at the University of California, Davis, found that from 2017 to 2019, cyclists riding in Chicago's Black neighborhoods were eight times <a href="https://jmbarajas.com/publication/biking-where-black/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">as likely</a> to be ticketed by police as those riding in white neighborhoods.As a result, initiatives are underway to make cycling safer, more equitable, and fun for all Chicagoans.<h2>Chicago cycling boom prompts changes in strategy</h2>According to the Active Transportation Alliance, Chicago has experienced huge <a href="https://activetrans.org/busreports/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/2020regionalmodesharereport.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">growth in bicycle commuting</a> over the years, going from about 2,000 commuters in 1980 to nearly 24,000 commuters in 2018. Furthermore, Chicago saw a 34% <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-09-23/how-the-coronavirus-affected-biking-in-u-s-cities" target="_blank" rel="noopener">increase</a> in cycling amid the pandemic, and cycling continues to remain popular in the city, with<a href="https://bikethedrive.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> over 16,500</a> riders having attended the 21st Annual Fifth Third Bike the Drive in 2022.The new, ambitious <a href="https://www.chicago.gov/content/dam/city/depts/cdot/bike/2023/2023_Chicago%20Cycling%20Update.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chicago Cycling Strategy</a> from the Chicago Department of Transportation, worth over $17 million, includes expanding Chicago's bike network by designing and implementing 150 miles of low-stress bikeways over the next several years."CDOT recognizes that neighborhoods will not experience the vast benefits of biking until people have safe and convenient access to the places they need and want to go," Gia Biagi, CDOT's commissioner, said. "This approach has already been implemented in several West-side communities, where CDOT was able to triple the mileage of bikeways in Belmont Cragin and North Lawndale in just two years."But while residents feel the strategy is a step in the right direction, some point out that it's going to take more than an ambitious plan from the city to make cycling more equitable."I think it's great that CDOT wants to engage the communities in which they are working for input, even calling themselves out for being too top-down in the past," Kevin Womac, the owner of Boulevard Bikes in Chicago's Logan Square neighborhood, said. "But it's also about changing attitudes and becoming more compassionate. Bikes are seen as not cool by too many folks. Cycling is seen as something rich white folks do on the weekend. And if you're cycling in the city as a commuter, you must be a loser/too cheap to buy a car. "I love cycling and use it as an escape," a 30-year-old Black cyclist who asked to remain anonymous said. "But I have to be careful when I'm out and very aware of my surroundings. It's always good to be aware of who and what is around you, in case you need an exit plan. Ride routes you know you'll be seen or heard if there's any trouble."A 28-year-old Black cyclist agreed, adding: "Ride only in parts of the city you're familiar with. If you have friends that ride, ride together, if you have family members that are willing to ride, especially older ones, ride with them. And always share your location.""I rarely see Black folks riding on our trails here," the 30-year-old cyclist added. Both cyclists asked to remain anonymous to maintain the privacy of their personal bike routes. Their identities are known to Insider.<h2>Bike giveaways to eligible residents encourage lifestyle change</h2>That said, data indicates that demand for bikes and adoption of the cycling lifestyle is expanding to more demographics in more regions of the city.Earlier in the pandemic, Chicago launched a program to give away <a href="https://www.chicago.gov/city/en/sites/bike-chicago/home.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">5,000 bikes to eligible Chicago residents by 2026</a>."More than 19,000 residents applied to the Bike Chicago program, demonstrating a clear demand for bikes and interest in cycling in every Chicago neighborhood, but a majority of applications having come from areas where residents face higher mobility hardship in Chicago," Biagi said. "CDOT has given away nearly 1,000 free bicycles and safety equipment already."Furthermore, initiatives such as <a href="https://www.chicago.gov/city/en/depts/cdot/supp_info/safe-ambassadors.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Learn To Ride</a> also help encourage new cyclists to adopt biking as a lifestyle by providing free classes every summer for both adults and children to learn how to ride. Streets Are For Everybody ambassadors provide education and outreach to program participants. Junior ambassadors engage with 6- to 12-year-olds throughout the city at camps and community events, teaching kids biking and safety skills.<h2>Green Corps provides an outlet for sustainable action</h2>These programs have an overall positive impact on the community beyond cycling itself. Green Corps is a summer jobs program that connects Chicago youth with career and service opportunities in sustainability, which includes cycling. Green Corps participants have helped to assemble the bikes in the Bike Chicago program. Womac said, "I understand that the bikes are being assembled by young mechanics at the bike co-op Working Bikes in Bridgeport. Here on the north side, West Town Bikes is also training 'at-risk youth' how to work on bikes and how to work in a shop with others. I know many alumni have gotten jobs maintaining the Divvy fleet, which is just about the best example of getting the community involved."<h2>The future of Chicago cycling relies on an attitude shift</h2>The success and longevity of these programs will rely on not only funding — whether it's keeping up with demand from the Bike Chicago program or meeting the initiatives laid out in the Chicago Cycling Strategy — but also overall support. "The strategy is full of things to spend money on," Womac said. "These efforts are great things to talk about and lobby money for, but an attitude adjustment needs to happen across the whole country to really make cycling safer and more equitable."

That's what Apple portrayed during its annual product event this week, where the tech giant debuted its latest batch of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/iphone-13-release-date-price-preorder-2021-9">iPhones</a>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-watch-series-7-new-features-fall-detection-2021-9">Apple Watches</a>, and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-event-new-ipad-ipad-mini-2021-9">iPads</a>. It's hard not to compare what Apple is doing with Peloton, the 9-year-old fitness upstart that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/peloton-fitness-influencer-alex-toussaint-instagram-business-2020-2">turned its trainers into household names</a>. Over the course of nearly a decade, Peloton has grown to a nearly $32 billion, publicly traded enterprise built alongside of, and perhaps because of, the stardom of trainers like Cody Rigsby and Robin Arzon. The Peloton trainers are mostly glamorous, young, and svelte, and many of them have transcended the screens attached to the $1,500 or $2,500 bikes: Rigsby is about to be <a href="https://www.insider.com/peloton-instructor-cody-rigsby-dancer-for-katy-perry-pitbull-2021-7">a contestant on this season of "Dancing with the Stars,"</a> and Ally Love - who teaches a range of classes including spin, dance, and pilates - just hosted a five-day wedding bash in Trinidad and Tobago, complete with thoughtful product placements, its own social media embargo, and <a href="https://www.vogue.com/slideshow/ally-love-trinidadian-carnival-party-wedding">a feature in Vogue</a>. So in Apple giving its own trainers a spotlight during an event like the iPhone debut, it seems as though the company might be hoping to tap into a bit of the Peloton magic. The stream was available to view on Apple TV, Apple's own website, and YouTube - on YouTube alone, it was viewed by more than 16 million people. It's hard to say if can Apple recreate that level of stardom. As the author and journalist Anne Helen Petersen pointed out <a href="https://annehelen.substack.com/p/towards-a-unified-theory-of-peloton">in her newsletter, Culture Study</a>, the Peloton trainer fame is unique in that users' consumption of them isn't passive - you're tuned into the workout and strapped onto the bike, not distracted by your phone or the TV. "You've shown them your worst and best self," Petersen wrote. "They've piloted you through frankly melodramatic episodes of athletic exertion. What's more, Apple appears to have made a committement to inclusivity that you don't always see in the shimmering world of Peloton. Electric bicycles of all shapes and sizes have whirred and zipped their way into the mainstream in recent years as the pandemic has supercharged an e-biking boom that was already well underway. And that's a great thing, because while replacing gas-burning cars with electric ones is key to heading off global warming, <a href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=ca8bcadc82c3e1855682c1fbf219e7146fc3fe16ad4f06de2f2e06a6c966b24b&amp;postID=64381f57aa8499323b6b8329&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nature.com%2Farticles%2Fs41558-020-00921-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">research</a> <a href="https://rmi.org/how-to-move-america-to-electric-vehicles/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">has found</a> Americans also need to drive less altogether to avoid climate catastrophe.<h2>The Earth-saving potential of e-bikes</h2>Transportation is the single biggest contributor to <a href="https://www.epa.gov/ghgemissions/sources-greenhouse-gas-emissions#transportation" target="_blank" rel="noopener">US greenhouse-gas emissions</a>. And light-duty vehicles (cars, pickup trucks, and SUVs, not semis and airplanes) make up the largest chunk of that. Gains in vehicle efficiency are being <a href="https://jalopnik.com/large-trucks-suvs-erasing-u-s-fuel-economy-gains-1849888478" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dragged down by rising sales of large SUVs and trucks</a>, while practically no progress has been made in reducing the number of miles people drive, Carter Rubin, a transportation lead at the Natural Resources Defense Council, told Insider. All that makes enticing people to step out of the driver's seat and onto a bike, bus, or sidewalk increasingly important for meeting climate goals."Cleaner cars are an important solution, but we can't just focus on cars," Katherine García, the director of the Clean Transportation for All Campaign at the Sierra Club, told Insider. "We need to make sure we are putting programs in place that really encourage people to take alternatives."<div type="image" title="The Aventon Aventure.2" height="1668" width="2500" msid="99694552" hostid="261" sizebytes="542282"></div>E-bikes have loads of potential to pry Americans away from their beloved automobiles, advocates told Insider, especially since short trips could easily be made on two wheels instead. According to the US Bureau of Transportation Statistics, <a href="https://www.energy.gov/eere/vehicles/articles/fotw-1230-march-21-2022-more-half-all-daily-trips-were-less-three-miles-2021" target="_blank" rel="noopener">more than half of all trips in the US are under 3 miles</a>.A <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1361920921000687?via%3Dihub" target="_blank" rel="noopener">University of Oxford study</a> found that swapping a car for a bike just once a day slashed an individual's transportation emissions by a whopping 67%. <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1361920920306696?via%3Dihub">Another study</a> found choosing an e-bike for 15% of one's miles traveled cut their transportation emissions by 12%.Fast, fun, and convenient, e-bikes are already helping people make that kind of shift in their daily lives. Victor Silva, a product manager in the suburbs of Washington, DC, bought a RadRunner Plus from <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rad-power-bikes-radmission-1-review-best-affordable-e-bikes-2021-1">Rad Power Bikes</a> for $1,900 in the summer after realizing most of his car trips were only a few miles. Now he's hooked. He recently bought another e-bike and is looking to sell his and his wife's second car since it barely gets any use. He said he wasn't going to miss the insurance payments or traffic jams. "I'm trading an activity that I absolutely hate doing, which is getting stuck in traffic, with something that I actually like doing, which is getting some exercise and riding my bike," he told Insider. <div type="image" title="Two people seen riding Aventon e-bikes." height="1667" width="2500" msid="99694554" hostid="261" sizebytes="465600"></div>After Wesley Cook and his wife sold their second car last year, they test-rode a pair of e-bikes from a local, Atlanta-based company called Edison Bicycles and never looked back. While they had never biked much before, they've slowly replaced daily errands like getting groceries or taking their son to school with e-bike rides.Cook, a software engineer, just made an addition to the couple's fleet — a cargo bike from Urban Arrow that has plenty of room for their son and their baby who's arriving later this year.<h2>The e-bike advantage</h2>The power of e-bikes to alter peoples' habits and help save the planet is simple and maybe a little obvious. But it's important and worth spelling out nonetheless: By making biking easier, e-bikes encourage people to ride more. A little electrical assistance goes a long way toward helping people overcome the obstacles keeping them from biking, whether that's steep hills, a lengthy commute, physical limitations, or the mortifying thought of showing up somewhere with pit stains, John MacArthur, a professor at Portland State University who researches sustainable transportation, told Insider."A lot of those barriers can be broken down by putting a motor on a bike," he said.National surveys he's conducted have indicated that e-bikes motivate people to ride farther and more often — plus they broaden interest in cycling beyond the stereotypical spandex-clad white man.Lyft, which operates bike-sharing systems across the US, has noticed similar trends. It's seen ridership boom by more than 50% since 2020 and attributes much of that growth to e-bikes. In 2021, e-bikes made up just 20% of Lyft's New York City fleet but 40% of total rides and nearly two-thirds of journeys between boroughs, which typically involve a steep climb over a bridge. <div type="image" title="New form factors, including cargo models like the Tern GSD, have helped fuel e-bike demand." height="2001" width="3000" msid="99694555" hostid="261" sizebytes="685982"></div>As many people who have ridden an e-bike will tell you, they're just plain fun — and they can often get you places faster and with less hassle than a car or bus. They're that rare thing in life that's both good and good for you."They're kind of a rocket fuel for regular biking," Rubin, a daily e-biker, told Insider. Electric cars are important, too, but they're expensive and far off for a lot of drivers, MacArthur said. Just consider someone who recently bought a gas car and doesn't plan on trading it in for a decade. E-bikes, on the other hand, are an option that's right here, right now. <h2>The most popular electric vehicles in the US don't have a Tesla logo</h2>While electric cars get all the attention, e-bikes have for years been the best-selling electric vehicles in the US.Last year, Americans bought just over 800,000 electric cars, according to Kelley Blue Book, a record. E-bike imports (a good proxy for sales since most e-bikes aren't made in the US) numbered around 1.1 million, surging from 880,000 in 2021 and 437,000 the year before, according to an e-bike-industry trade group. In dollar terms, e-bike retail sales nearly quadrupled in the past four years, rising from $240.1 million in 2019 to $885.5 million in 2022, the market-research firm Circana estimates. While sales of leg-powered bicycles slumped 16% last year, e-bike sales jumped by $100 million.Ed Benjamin, the Light Electric Vehicle Association's chair, chalks up the trend to growing awareness among consumers and more interest and know-how among bike sellers. The pandemic, which made people wary of close-quarters public transit, boosted e-bike fandom to new heights, he said. And sales show no sign of slowing down. In China and some parts of Europe, one out of every two bikes sold has a motor, Benjamin said, which indicates there's plenty of room for growth in the US. Improving tech and new form factors for different types of shoppers have fueled public appetite, too, MacArthur of Portland State said. Now buyers can choose from a wide variety of regular-looking bikes, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-folding-electric-bike-ebike-gocycle-commuting-2021-8">folding bikes</a>, tricycles, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/super73-s1-review-electric-e-bike-post-lockdown-commuting-cycling-2020-7">fat-tire mopeds</a>, and even <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2023/3/18/23645151/cargo-ebike-electric-golden-age-prices-utility-dtc" target="_blank" rel="noopener">cargo bikes, which have extra room for groceries and seats for children</a>.<div type="image" title="A red Gocycle G4i+ electric folding bike on grass, with water and blue skies in the background." height="2848" width="4201" msid="99694556" hostid="261" sizebytes="656330"></div>The demand explosion has meant boom times for e-bike makers who played their cards right, like California's Aventon, which got its start in 2013 selling (nonelectric) fixed-gear bikes.Seeing the potential in e-bikes, the young firm went all in on the technology in 2020, at what turned out to be a very opportune time. Since then, it's expanded its lineup to seven models and multiplied its revenues by a factor of 42, Aventon's chief marketing officer, Adele Nasr, told Insider. One key driver of the success, Nasr said: Customers are increasingly seeing e-bikes as legitimate tools for replacing car trips, rather than just toys for recreation."They're starting to think about them differently, starting to imagine use cases that are so much more evolved than they were even three years ago, which is incredible," Nasr said. <h2>Congress could give the e-bike boom another jolt</h2>While the federal government has committed <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2023/02/15/fact-sheet-biden-harris-administration-announces-new-standards-and-major-progress-for-a-made-in-america-national-network-of-electric-vehicle-chargers/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">billions of dollars to public EV charging</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/federal-state-electric-car-vehicle-tax-credits-rebates-qualify-2023-1">$7,500 tax refunds</a> to buyers of Teslas and electric Ford F-150s, it's largely left e-bikes out in the cold.That's a big mistake, said Noa Banayan, the director of federal affairs at PeopleForBikes, an advocacy group that represents the bike industry. Since e-bikes are much cheaper than electric cars, "you can get them into the hands of consumers faster," she said.But times are changing. In March, a group of congresspeople reintroduced the <a href="https://panetta.house.gov/media/press-releases/reps-panetta-blumenauer-thompson-and-schiff-reintroduce-e-bike-act" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Electric Bicycle Incentive Kickstart for the Environment (E-BIKE) Act</a>, which <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lawmakers-want-give-you-1500-buy-an-electric-bike-2023-3">proposes a 30% discount (up to $1,500) for the purchase of a new e-bike</a>. The law could not only make e-bikes more accessible to more Americans, Rubin of the Natural Resources Defense Council said, but also send a powerful message to state and local governments to get serious about safer cycling infrastructure such as protected bike lanes.Unlike when it was first introduced (then scrapped) in 2021, the bill now has support from major environmental groups, including the Sierra Club and Environment America."Now they're realizing that electric bicycles and active transportation, and micromobility more broadly, should be a part of their larger transportation and climate agendas," Banayan said. As he did so, "the bike spun around and impacted him on his neck and face severing his carotid artery in his neck killing him instantly," according to the suit. Ryan Furtado was later found by the New York Police Department.Johanna Furtado alleges in the suit that Peloton did not provide enough warning that the bike could cause injury if people used it to pull themselves off the floor. On the bike Ryan was using, the lawsuit claims there was only a single warning label, which the suit calls "inadequate."Johanna Furtado is seeking damages from Peloton including, including but not limited to funds to help with funeral and burial expenses, lost inheritance, and suffering Ryan may have endured, according to the suit.Peloton denied the allegations and requested that the suit be dismissed, <a target="_blank" href="https://s3.documentcloud.org/documents/23940408/peloton-answer.pdf">saying in a court filing</a> that the "alleged injuries were caused by misuse or abuse of the product.""We offer our deepest sympathy and condolences to the Furtado family for this unfortunate accident," Peloton's Senior VP of Global Communications Ben Boyd told Insider in a statement. The New York Times' David Waldstein <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/10/sports/football/nfl-gambling-bridge.html">reported</a> that a group of bettors are taking to leg or wheel and traversing the George Washington Bridge to make their wagers. That's because the George Washington Bridge connects Upper Manhattan with New Jersey; in Manhattan, bettors still aren't able to legally gamble on games on their phones. But in New Jersey, they can. Cue the bikers, scooters, and runners.One bettor, Colman Cooper, arrived in New Jersey via bike. He told the New York Times that if he won on 1 p.m. games, he might bike back from Manhattan to New Jersey to try his hand again for a 4 p.m. game.The entrance to the George Washington Bridge is located in New York's Washington Heights. For New Yorkers residing in Upper Manhattan - which includes neighboring Inwood and Harlem - as well as the Bronx, the bridge is easily accessible. Once on the bridge, there's just about a mile and a half between you and New Jersey. It's a byproduct of the ongoing rollout of <keyword id="11972476" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="sports-betting" source="Orion">sports betting</keyword> - especially mobile sports betting - and the way that some bettors have gotten creative during the pandemic. Addabbo Jr. chairs the racing, gaming, and wagering committee, and has been a <a href="https://www.nysenate.gov/newsroom/press-releases/joseph-p-addabbo-jr/joint-statement-sports-betting-legislation-amendments">proponent</a> for legalizing virtual betting to help raise funds for state programs. It came up with an electric pedal-less bike for 4 to 8-year-olds called the "K1D."It can go up to 15 miles an hour on any terrain, comes in four colors – and costs $1,295.E-bikes have risen in popularity, but so have <a href="https://www.insider.com/lisa-banes-actor-dead-nyc-scooter-hit-and-run-2021-6">accidents</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-e-bike-startups-are-working-delivery-drivers-safer-2023-7">battery fires</a>. The number of fires caused by e-bike and e-scooter batteries grew from 44 to 220 from 2020 to 2022 in New York City alone, Insider previously reported. And there's concern over a lack of regulation given e-bikes are <a href="https://www.insider.com/most-dangerous-cities-to-ride-a-bike-in-2019-7">more like vehicles</a>, yet without needing a license or registration.So why would any parent fork out $1,300 for a K1D? "For a huge part of our customer base buying our core e-bike products, this is the very first time that they are on a two-wheeled vehicle that can operate under its own power," he tells Insider. According to an industry trade group, about 1.1 million e-bikes were imported last year, up from from 880,000 in 2021, Insider previously reported.The K1D is aimed at 4 to 8-year-olds – the same age range when many children learn how to <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/fitness/best-kids-bike">ride a bike</a>. Crewse says that without the battery, the K1D is just a regular <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/this-dad-built-a-10-million-business-by-reinventing-the-bicycle-2014-5">balance bike</a>, which many parents now opt for rather than training wheels. "We're just taking that formula and adding some power to it," he says. "It's that training tool that any child who wants to learn how to ride can learn how to ride a K1D, just as you would any other balance bike. But then you have that other layer where now you can add that power to it, and it's so much more than just a training aid."Crewse also says safety was a major concern in the design process. The bike has a lithium-ion battery, which the company says is the safest possible type, as well as a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-workers-reveal-what-customers-should-know-about-their-cars-2020-1">regenerative braking system</a> that brings the bike to a stop when the throttle is released. "Apparently she comes home from school and immediately just wants to ride the bike and is going up and down the little quiet street that they have," he says. "It's not being used for transportation purposes, and she's not a little future moto racer or anything like that. Adams, the 61-year-old Democratic nominee and former NYPD captain, was observed by reporters engaging in a series of late night and early morning hijinks that typified his quirky personality.At 4:18 a.m. last Tuesday morning, a New York magazine reporter saw Adams pull up to the Bedford-Stuyvesant brownstone he's listed as his official residence and look for a place to park.
