Airplane cabins are chock-full of secret cameras, but they're not used to spy on passengers. Here's what they're for and where to find them.

I took a 12-hour Emirates flight from New York to Dubai on the Airbus A380 and it was the glamorous experience I had hoped for, even in economy class

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="12068324" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="etihad-airways" source="Orion">Etihad Airways</keyword> CEO Tony Douglas believes that <keyword id="11898285" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="airlines" source="Orion">airlines</keyword> that don't focus on sustainability may be forced out of business.</li><li>More leisure <keyword id="11896628" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="travel" source="Orion">travel</keyword>ers and businesses are focusing on the emissions of their travel and choosing green airlines. </li></ul><p>Etihad Airways is betting all of its chips on sustainable <keyword id="12018329" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="aviation" source="Orion">aviation</keyword>, and says that airlines that aren't doing the same might soon be "history."</p><p>Tony Douglas, Etihad's chief executive officer, told Insider at the Dubai Airshow in November that airlines will soon compete on environmental performance, and those that aren't making changes now could lose future customers.</p><p>"Increasingly, travelers will make choices that do include carbon emissions and therefore, the environmental performance [of their airline,]" Douglas said. "The people that don't respond in the sort of ways that we've been doing may well be history."</p><p>Etihad's ultimate goal is to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 and cut its 2019 emissions in half by 2035. </p><p>The airline knows how to cut back on emissions but mastering the balancing act between environmental sustainability and economic sustainability remains elusive. </p><p>On October 23, Etihad flew its self-described "most sustainable flight ever" from London to Abu Dhabi, UAE in which it reduced emissions by 72% to a similar flight two years prior. From reducing plastic waste by using plant-based water bottles to reducing fuel burn by obtaining a more direct air route, the airline was able to reduce waste and save around 64 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.  </p><p>A mixture of 62% traditional jet fuel and 38% sustainable aviation fuel, or SAF for short, powered the flight for additional carbon savings.</p><p>But replicating those sustainable conditions on every flight would be too costly for Etihad and the airline "would be insolvent within about 20 minutes," Douglas said, based on the cost of sustainable aviation fuel alone.</p><p>"The reason why we actually do these flights is to draw people's attention to the much larger challenges here," Douglas said. "Whilst I can predict an end to the pandemic … I actually don't predict an end to the challenge of commercial aviation sustainability." </p><p>Sourcing and using sustainable aviation fuel was a challenge as the fuel was brought in from Amsterdam and Etihad wasn't even able to fill the plane with as much of the biofuel as it wanted. </p><p>"There's no infrastructure to be able to deliver [SAF] directly to aircraft," Douglas, the former chief executive officer of Heathrow Airport, said. "You can't get prices down until availability goes up, but you're not going to get availability to go up until you get prices down."</p><p>Etihad's focus on sustainability came as a result of a restructuring plan undertaken by the airline after failed investments in foreign carriers such as Alitalia, Jet Airways, and Air Berlin, all of which have permanently ceased <keyword id="11896631" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="flying" source="Orion">flying</keyword>. </p><p>"The fallout from that was a transformation plan which had to radically reshape, resize, and get us on a sustainable footing," Douglas said of the investments. "It was analogous to open-heart surgery on the balance sheet." </p><p>That plan included a fleet renewal centered around leading next-generation aircraft from Airbus and Boeing. </p><p>Boeing's  787 Dreamliner, which Etihad nicknamed the "Greenliner," is currently Etihad's leading long-haul aircraft. Airbus' A350-1000 XWB aircraft, or the "Sustainable Fifties" in Etihad parlance, joined the fleet in 2019 but won't fly passengers until 2022.</p><div type="image" title="Etihad Airways Airbus A350-1000 XWB — Dubai Airshow 2021" height="1666" width="2222" msid="88343611" hostid="261"></div><p>Etihad travelers are now being incentivized to make sustainable choices with the launch of the airline's "green loyalty" program. Travelers with smaller carbon footprints, whether it be those traveling without extra luggage, will receive extra frequent flyer miles.</p><p>"The idea that this gets passed through to ticket prices to our guests, the traveling public, I actually find reprehensible," Douglas said of so-called green taxes on travelers. "There is a societal need to travel and therefore, penalizing the passenger through increased ticket pricing I actually struggle with conceptually in one sense."</p><p>Competing airlines are "welcome" to copy Etihad's sustainable game plan, Douglas said, warning that those that don't might lose major corporate clients that are adopting new environmentally-friendly travel policies. </p><p>"I kind of feel for them because not everybody has the ability to do so," Douglas said of competitors that aren't taking sustainable measures. "Having said that, I think going forward it will be the principle differentiator of who succeeds and who fails."</p>

Etihad Airways' CEO says that airlines that fail to follow its sustainability lead may soon be 'history'

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Insider is attending the Dubai Airshow, which hosts some of <keyword id="12018329" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="aviation" source="Orion">aviation</keyword>'s latest and greatest innovations.</li><li><keyword id="11910631" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="boeing" source="Orion">Boeing</keyword> is showing off its 777X, the world's largest twin-engine aircraft. <keyword id="11896633" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="airbus" source="Orion">Airbus</keyword> is bringing its largest twin-engine jets. </li></ul><p>DUBAI - The Dubai Airshow officially kicked off on Sunday, marking the start of the first international airshow of the pandemic.</p><p>International air shows are a time for aircraft manufacturers to show off their latest innovations, while airlines and other aircraft operators display their newest purchases and often make new ones. And with nearly two years without this type of meetup, there's plenty for the industry to catch up on.</p><p>In the commercial aviation realm, Boeing and Airbus are - unsurprisingly - the main attractions with support from their airline partners. But smaller players including Brazil's <keyword id="12337321" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="embraer" source="Orion">Embraer</keyword> and Russia's Irkut Corporation are also in attendance with the hopes of winning orders for their competing products, offering airlines an alternative to the biggest in the business.</p><p>Private aviation is another focus, with manufacturers like Dassault Aviation and Bombardier showing off their new flagship business aircraft. Private charter firms, including Comlux and VistaJet, will also make the case for why their high-end aircraft are worth thousands of dollars an hour to charter.</p><p>And of course, the military, space, and defense industrial complexes will be present, with the US, Indian, French, Japanese, and UAE militaries bringing what amounts to a small air force in a display of military might. That's all in addition to the startups filling the convention hall that promise to revolutionize the aviation industry.</p><p>Insider is on the ground at the Dubai Airshow.  Here's what we're most looking forward to in the commercial, cargo, and private aviation realms.</p><h2>1. Boeing's latest and most controversial aircraft on display</h2><div type="image" title="Boeing 777X" height="3461" width="4614" msid="87697965" hostid="261"></div><p>The Boeing 777X is making its first-ever international debut and will be welcoming select attendees onboard for a sneak peek at what's to come from the landmark aircraft. Insider is those invited onboard for a first look.</p><p>The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boeing-777x-twin-engine-plane-flew-for-the-first-time-2020-1">ultra-modern variant of the popular Boeing 777 family of aircraft promises increased efficiency and additional seating capacity</a> to its previous generation sibling. And in addition to the 777X being the largest twin-engine plane slated to fly passengers, the two <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/worlds-largest-plane-engine-ge9x-to-power-boeing-777x-2020-9">GE Aviation GE9X engines will be the largest commercial aircraft engines in the world</a>.</p><p>Boeing will also perform a flying display with the aircraft to demonstrate its capabilities to a crowd that's been following the aircraft's journey, through its delays and all, since its first flight in early 2020.</p><p>The 777X's presence in Dubai is likely an homage to Emirates as the launch customer and soon-to-be largest operator of the aircraft. More than 100 777X will fill the Emirates fleet in the next few decades, based on its current order.</p><p>Boeing would also be hoping to land additional orders for the aircraft that's already garnered interest from the world's leading carriers. But orders for the smaller 777-8 will be key as most existing orders are focused on the larger 777-9.</p><p>The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/boeing-737-max">Boeing 737 Max</a> is set to be a prominent feature at the Dubai Airshow with two static aircraft on display. Boeing, in partnership with Alaska Airlines, is displaying the 737 Max 9 EcoDemonstrator aircraft that is being used to test new technology aimed at reducing the aviation industry's carbon footprint.</p><p>Alternatively, the UAE's own FlyDubai is set to have its 737 Max on display as the region's largest operator of the model. The budget carrier recently unveiled a <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CVr9Jx6vf5e/">new business class cabin for the aircraft</a> including lie-flat seats, pushing the bounds of comfort on a narrow-body aircraft in a way most 737 Max operators have been unwilling to do.</p><p>The Max displays come less than a year since the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boeing-737-max-fly-again-news-update-recertification-faa-production-2020-11">Federal Aviation Administration ungrounded the aircraft</a> following <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/737-max-fly-again-crash-boeing-revisions-faa-2020-12">two deadly crashes that resulted in the loss of 346 lives</a>, attributable to a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/outrageous-messages-from-boeing-employees-2020-1">Boeing software issue</a>.</p><p>Boeing's newest military aerial refueler, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/air-force-expects-kc-46-tanker-this-year-defects-remain-2018-1">KC-46 Pegasus</a>, will also be on display as part of the US Air Force delegation. The aircraft has been plagued with scandal that's benefited its rival, Airbus and the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/airbus-a330-achieves-first-aerial-refueling-beats-boeing-2020-4">A330 Multi-Role Tanker Transport</a>, the Airbus refueler which will also be at the Dubai Airshow.</p><h2>2. Emirates giving the world's largest passenger jet a new lease on life</h2><div type="image" title="Emirates Airbus A380" height="1665" width="2221" msid="87697966" hostid="261"></div><p>The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/airbus-a380-boeing-747-stop-production-double-decker-airliners-2020-7">Airbus A380 hasn't fared well during the pandemic</a> as it quickly became a symbol for the opulence and excess that airlines needed to cut. And the result was groundings en masse for the likes of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-havoc-forces-airlines-to-retire-iconic-planes-sooner-2020-3">Qantas, Singapore Airlines, Lufthansa, and more</a>.</p><p>Airbus, meanwhile, had already been <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/last-airbus-a380-fuselage-delivered-to-toulouse-factory-for-assembly-2020-6">drawing down production of the A380</a> with the final deliveries slated to All Nippon Airways and Emirates as the final two airlines still taking deliveries. The numbered days of the A380 appeared to dwindle as air <keyword id="11896628" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="travel" source="Orion">travel</keyword> recovered.</p><p>Emirates, however, announced a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/emirates-unveils-new-design-for-new-airbus-a380s-premium-economy-2021-1">new investment in A380 to see to give it a brand new passenger cabin</a>. All classes of service will see enhancements and a new premium economy class is being added.</p><p>One of the newly-refreshed A380s will be in attendance at Dubai. Insider will be on board.</p><h2>3. The best of private aviation with one notable exception</h2><div type="image" title="VistaJet Bombardier Global 7500" height="1665" width="2221" msid="87697967" hostid="261"></div><p>Bombardier will show off its flagship business aircraft, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/70-million-bombardier-global-7500-for-sale-only-on-market-2020-5">Global 7500 jet, which holds the title of the largest and longest-ranged purpose-built private jet</a> currently in service. Both Bombardier and long-time customer <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vistajet-takes-delivery-first-charter-ready-bombardier-global-7500-2020-11">VistaJet will have the Global 7500 on display</a>.</p><p>Insider will be sitting down with Bombardier's new CEO, Eric Martel, to talk about the manufacturer's shift to an all-aviation product line.</p><p>Dassault Aviation will have two aircraft on display including a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dassault-falcon-10x-largest-ever-private-jet-features-design-2021-5">cabin mock-up of the Falcon 10X, its soon-to-be largest private jet</a> set to go up against leaders from Bombardier and Gulfstream. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-dassaults-falcon-10x-will-be-category-killer-coolest-features-2021-7">Industry experts are particularly excited about the Falcon 10X</a> given its performance capabilities, interior design, and overall spacious cabin.</p><p>Gulfstream is not attending this year's Dubai Airshow, and its absence is notable given the manufacturer has three new aircraft currently in development. Most notably, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gulfstream-debuts-75-million-g700-private-jet-tour-photos-2021-9">the Gulfstream G700 that made the rounds over the summer on a global tour</a> will not be making the trek to Dubai.</p><p>But even with three new aircraft in the pipeline, Gulfstream is ceding Dubai to its French, Canadian, and Brazilian rivals.  </p><p>Boeing is bringing one of its 737 airliner-turned-private-jets, known as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boeing-business-jet-747-8i-private-photos-interior-2020-3">Boeing Business Jets</a>, to Dubai, but it won't be on display at the airshow. Rather, select attendees, including Insider, will be shuttled to Dubai International Airport for tours.</p><p>Airbus, for its part, will <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inside-acropolis-aviations-new-110-million-acj320neo-private-jet-2020-3">show off an Airbus Corporate Jet 320neo</a>, the private jet variant of the A320neo airliner. <br />These flying penthouse apartments are intended for a particularly wealthy type of traveler than can afford the ultra-high expense of purchasing and maintaining an airline for private use.</p><p>Embraer is showing off its <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/embraers-newest-praetor-600-private-jet-enters-service-with-flexjet-2020-12">Praetor 600 super-midsize aircraft that's becoming popular with major private jet firms including Flexjet</a>.</p><p>Aircraft completion specialist Citadel Completions will also bring a rare private jet to the skies, another airliner-turned-private jet based on the Airbus A340-500 airliner. The four-engine private offers a nearly unbeatable combination of living space and range, with the A340-500 a former favorite of airlines to fly ultra-long-haul routes.</p><p>Other private aircraft manufacturers in attendance include Pilatus, Irkut Corporation, Textron Aviation, and Tecnam.</p><h2>4. A Brazilian and European rivalry on full display</h2><div type="image" title="An Embraer E195-E2 aircraft - Embraer E195-E2" height="1666" width="2223" msid="87697968" hostid="261"></div><p>Airbus and Embraer will both bring their next-generation aircraft that are fighting for control in the 100-150-seat market.</p><p>Embraer is bringing its Embraer E195-E2 demonstration aircraft, featuring a special paint livery with a tiger on the nose and called the "Profit Hunter." <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/porter-airlines-breathes-life-into-embraer-e195-e2-program-2021-7">Sales have been poor when compared to Airbus</a> despite Embraer touting better operating economics over its Airbus competitor.</p><p>Airbus and Air Baltic will be showing off the Airbus A220, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/history-of-the-airbus-a220-bombardier-cseries-plane-2020-2">formerly known as the Bombardier CSeries</a>. Airlines around the world have fallen for the A220 while Embraer has struggled to keep up commercially. It's been losing long-time customers, including <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/flying-on-jetblue-airways-brand-new-airbus-a220-photos-review-2021-6">JetBlue Airways</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/air-canada-unveils-controversial-new-airbus-a220-aircraft-2020-1">Air Canada</a> to the Airbus jet.</p><h2>5. Russia's answer to the Boeing 737 Max and Airbus A320 family of aircraft</h2><div type="image" title="Irkut Corporation MC-21" height="2000" width="2666" msid="87697969" hostid="261"></div><p>Russia's Irkut Corporation is nearing the finish line on a new jet to compete against Boeing and Airbus' 150-to-200-seat aircraft market. The MC-21 is made with composite materials and powered by turbofan engines. </p><p>It's unlikely that a Western airline will place an order but the jet could show promise in Europe and Asia. </p><h2>6. Israel comes to town</h2><div type="image" title="Israel Aerospace Industries Boeing 777-300ER &quot;Big Twin&quot; cargo plane" height="1421" width="1895" msid="87697972" hostid="261"></div><p>Israel is set to have a major presence at the Dubai Airshow for the first time in the event's history. The recent easing of tensions between Israel and the UAE under the Abraham Accords paved the way for Israel's attendance.</p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-passenger-airliners-are-converted-into-freighter-planes-2021-2">Israel Aerospace Industries</a> is one Israeli company that will make its first-ever journey to the Dubai Airshow, highlighting its experience in defense systems, passenger-to-cargo aircraft conversations, and maintenance and repair operations.</p><h2>7. Never-before-seen aircraft</h2><div type="image" title="Ethiad Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner" height="1198" width="1598" msid="87697973" hostid="261"></div><p>Etihad Airways is bringing the Airbus A350-1000 XWB to Dubai in a first-ever public display. Despite the airline taking delivery of five models from Airbus, according to <a href="https://www.planespotters.net/airline/Etihad-Airways">Planespotters.net</a>, not one has flown a paying passenger.</p><p>If <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/etihad-airways-likely-retiring-airbus-a380-and-the-residence-2021-3">Etihad CEO Tony Douglas keeps his promise to retire the airline's A380s</a>, the A350-1000 will become the second-largest aircraft in the Etihad fleet behind the Boeing 777-300ER. That is, until the Boeing 777X joins the fleet and makes the Airbus A350-1000 the third-largest plane in the fleet. </p><h2>8. Leonardo shows off the civilian version of a popular military aircraft</h2><div type="image" title="AW609 Tilt Rotor" height="1296" width="1728" msid="87697974" hostid="261"></div><p>The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/leonardo-aw609-civilian-v-22-osprey-details-photos-2020-3">Leonardo AW609 is one of the most unique aircraft coming to the Dubai Airshow</a> as it's one that can take off and fly like a plane or helicopter. Vertical takeoff and land aircraft are a special type of aircraft merging the best of fixed-wing aircraft with the flexibility a helicopter offers.</p><p>The US Air Force is also bringing its Bell Boeing MV-22B Osprey, one of the aircraft that protects the US president, to the Dubai Airshow.</p><p><em>Are you at the Dubai Airshow and want to get in touch with Insider? 8 things we're looking forward to at the Dubai Airshow this week

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Airbus landed 408 orders for aircraft at the Dubai Airshow ranging from the new A350 Freighter to the A220-300. </li><li><keyword id="11910631" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="boeing" source="Orion">Boeing</keyword> paled in comparison with 98 orders, including a 72-aircraft order for the 737 Max. </li></ul><p>DUBAI — The Dubai Airshow officially ended and Airbus walked away with 408 aircraft orders and commitments, besting competitor Boeing which ended the show with only 98 of the same. </p><p>Indigo Partners, an airline holding company, placed massive orders for next-generation Airbus narrow-body aircraft including the A321neo and A321XLR for its family of ultra-low-cost airlines. The opening day order quickly placed Airbus ahead of Boeing and set the tone for the five-day event.</p><p>European carrier Wizz Air will receive 75 A321neo and 27 A321XLR aircraft, American carrier Frontier Airlines will receive 91 A321neo aircraft, Mexican carrier Volaris will receive 39 A321neo aircraft, and Chilean carrier JetSmart will receive 21 A321neo and 2 A321XLR aircraft, as part of the mega order.</p><p>Airbus also launched the A350 Freighter, the cargo variant of the popular A350 XWB passenger wide-body plane, in a seven-aircraft order to aircraft leasing company Air Lease Corporation. Other models in the 111-aircraft order from Air Lease included 25 Airbus A220-300s, 55 A321neos, and four A330neos, to be leased to airlines around the world.</p><div type="image" title="Airbus A350-900 XWB at Dubai Airshow 2021" height="1389" width="1852" msid="87803031" hostid="261"></div><p>Finally, on the commercial side, Kuwait's Jazeera Airways placed an order for 28 Airbus A321neo aircraft while Nigeria's Ibom Air joined the Airbus family with an order for 10 A220 jets.</p><p>Airbus' defense division secured orders for two Airbus A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport aircraft bound for the United Arab Emirates Air Force and Air Defence. Indonesia also purchased two Airbus A400M cargo <keyword id="11896629" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="planes" source="Orion">planes</keyword>.</p><p>Boeing began the air show with strong sales on the cargo conversion side of its business as carriers look to expand air freight operations amid the shipping crisis. DHL Express placed an order for nine Boeing 767-300BCF, or Boeing Converted Freighter, aircraft while aircraft leasing company Icelease ordered 11 Boeing 737-800BCFs.</p><p>Emirates followed with a newly-revealed order for two new Boeing 777-200 Freighter aircraft to expand its Emirates SkyCargo fleet. Four <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/emirates-to-fly-worlds-largest-twin-engine-cargo-jet-israeli-2021-11">Boeing 777-300ERSF aircraft will also join the Emirates fleet in a deal with Israel Aerospace Industries</a> to convert four of the airline's 777-300ER passenger aircraft into freighters, at a cost of around $200 million.</p><p>The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/boeing-737-max">Boeing 737 Max</a> had a successful air show, with a new Indian carrier, Akasa Air, placing an order for 72 737 Max 8 and 737 Max 8-200 aircraft. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/united-orders-270-next-generation-jets-upgrading-fleet-with-tv-screens-2021-6">Orders for the 737 Max have flowed in</a> since the Federal <keyword id="12018329" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="aviation" source="Orion">Aviation</keyword> Administration <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boeing-737-max-fly-again-news-update-recertification-faa-production-2020-11">ungrounded the aircraft in November 2020</a> after 20 months following two fatal crashes. </p><p>Boeing did succeed in generating excitement for its newest and largest twin-engine aircraft, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/boeing-777x">Boeing 777X</a>. Having <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boeing-777x-twin-engine-plane-flew-for-the-first-time-2020-1">first flown in January 2020</a>, the Dubai Airshow marked the first-ever international trip for the 777X and the first time members of the public were allowed onboard.</p><div type="image" title="Boeing 777X at Dubai Airshow 2021" height="1738" width="2317" msid="87803033" hostid="261"></div><p>The soon-to-be world's largest twin-engine passenger plane is expected to be delivered in 2023, with six customers including the Dubai-based Emirates.</p><p>Boeing did not land any orders for the 777X while at the airshow but does hold <a href="https://www.boeing.com/commercial/?cm_re=March_2015-_-Roadblock-_-Orders+%26+Deliveries/#/orders-deliveries">more than 300 orders placed since the aircraft's inception</a>. The new flagship jet left Dubai mid-week for Qatar and Germany on its way to visit fellow customers Qatar Airways and Lufthansa, respectively.</p><p>A decision has not been made on whether Boeing will introduce a freighter variant of the 777X despite a red-hot market for cargo planes. But Boeing still has time to develop the aircraft as the A350 Freighter won't see deliveries until around 2026, <a href="https://www.flightglobal.com/dubai-2021/air-lease-becomes-a350f-launch-customer-as-part-of-broader-large-airbus-order/146416.article">FlightGlobal</a> reported. </p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Flying-taxi companies hope to revolutionize the daily commute for the cost of an Uber.</li><li>Competition led to one lawsuit before it was settled and Archer and Wisk agreed to work together.</li><li>Nature inspires many of the futuristic designs, Frank Stephenson told BI.</li></ul><p>Picture the scene: It's rush hour and you're running late for a meeting on the other side of town. If you're in a city with good public transportation, you could pile onto a busy metro train or you could get in a car or taxi and slog through traffic.</p><p class="MsoNormal">In a few years, if everything goes according to plan, you might be able to open an app to hail a non-polluting aircraft and avoid the ground congestion altogether.</p><p class="MsoNormal">This is the vision for Archer Aviation, one of several companies building electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing aircraft, better known as eVTOLs or flying taxis.</p><p class="MsoNormal">It shouldn't cost much more than an Uber, either. Adam Goldstein, the CEO of Archer, previously told Business Insider he expects a seat in its six-passenger <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/united-electric-air-taxi-archer-evtol-2023-6">Midnight aircraft</a> to cost about $100.</p><p class="MsoNormal">An <a target="_blank" href="https://www.uber.com/global/en/r/routes/manhattan-ny-to-ewr/">Uber from Manhattan to Newark Airport</a> costs $85 for a 40-minute drive. Archer says its Midnight flying taxi would need 10 minutes for the same journey, which the company plans to make its first commercial service in 2025.</p><p class="MsoNormal">BI attended the Dubai Airshow last month, where Goldstein started the sustainability conference with a speech about the company's ambitions.</p><p class="MsoNormal">"The transportation grid is still stuck in two dimensions. There's lots of trips out there where people are willing to spend 60, 90, or even 120 minutes in a car," he said. "Now we can solve these trips by going to the air."</p><p class="MsoNormal">Helicopters are the main alternative today, but they're expensive and many cities have banned their mass use due to noise complaints. Goldstein said that Archer's Midnight is "near silent when flying overhead."</p><p class="MsoNormal">Volocopter, a German startup set to bring its flying taxis to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/saudi-arabia-neom-project-green-city-fossil-fuels-oil-2023-12">Saudi Arabia's planned megacity Neom</a>, hopes to run its first service during next summer's Paris Olympics.</p><p>Most other eVTOL firms, including Archer, are targeting certification by 2025. Goldstein said Archer wants to start mass operations in 2028, when "hundreds" of flying taxis would operate in one city as Los Angeles transportation officials plan for their use during that year's Olympics.</p><h2>Why the flying-taxi designs look unique</h2><p>Frank Stephenson got his start designing cars. After Ford sponsored his design education, he worked for the company in Cologne, Germany. He also designed the Mini Cooper and the Fiat 500 and worked as a design director for Ferrari, Maserati, and McLaren.</p><p class="MsoNormal">His enthusiasm for aircraft was infectious as he spoke to BI at the Dubai Airshow. Midway through a sentence, the Italian Air Force's aerobatics team roaring overhead through plumes of red, white, and green smoke diverted his attention.</p><p class="MsoNormal">At first, pivoting to aviation might seem like a curious move, but for Stephenson, it made perfect sense.</p><p class="MsoNormal">"I think from as far back as I can remember, as a kid even, I was just interested in anything that moved," Stephenson told BI.</p><p>After leaving McLaren, Stephenson started his own design studio where his first client was Lilium Air Mobility.</p><div type="image" title="A model of a eVTOL Lilium Jet, electric vertical take-off and landing jet is displayed during the Farnborough International Airshow 2022 on July 18, 2022" height="2336" width="3500" msid="106100926" hostid="261"></div><p>These sleek, modern aircraft often appear as if they were plucked from the set of "Blade Runner," but for Stephenson, "everything I design is based on influences from nature."</p><p class="MsoNormal">"There's nothing more intelligent than nature in design," he told BI. "Who the heck says it has to look like an airplace anyways, because what's an airplane? It's a sausage with wings on it."</p><p class="MsoNormal">For Lilium, he was first inspired by the sea, because "a fish is theoretically more aerodynamic than a bird."</p><p class="MsoNormal">"The engineers were like, 'Oh my gosh, we've never thought about doing it like this before. And it works really well.' So that world opened up to me. It's like the first days of the automobile."</p><h2>United Airlines has ordered $1 billion's worth of Archer's Midnight craft</h2><p>"Once you can start replacing work-and-going-home trips with this aircraft, it's beyond my wildest imagination how you change where people live and work, and how much you can really impact mobility going forward," Nikhil Goel, Archer's chief commercial officer, told BI.</p><p class="MsoNormal">"Sustainability is big, but it's also just sexy," he added. "It's a really great way to get from A to B."</p><p class="MsoNormal">Goel, a former McKinsey consultant who cofounded <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/joby-aviation-to-acquire-uber-elevate-wins-75-million-investment-2020-12">Uber Elevate</a> before joining Archer, has the polished air of a Silicon Valley executive.</p><p class="MsoNormal">"The best-case scenario is probably still more than I would expect," he said. "I always say that if you'd asked Steve Jobs, 'How many iPhones would you sell in 2023?' He would have predicted probably a tenth of what we have today.</p><p class="MsoNormal">"So best-case scenario, I don't know, everybody in the world is able to use this to go from A to B."</p><div type="image" title="Nikhil Goel of Archer smiling wearing a grey suit and cyan tie stood in front of the Midnight eVTOL at the Dubai Air Show" height="3200" width="4800" msid="106100927" hostid="261"></div><p>There's still a lot to get through first. After aviation authorities certify them, eVTOL companies would need to scale up manufacturing. Then comes the infrastructure: building enough vertiports — eVTOL takeoff facilities — for mass use.</p><p class="MsoNormal">Vertiports are similar to helipads but include recharging and hangaring options.</p><p class="MsoNormal">But the money involved suggests that airlines believe there's promise. American Airlines, United Airlines, and Azul Brazilian Airlines have each made $1 billion deals with Vertical Aerospace, Archer, and Lilium, respectively.</p><p class="MsoNormal">Goldstein said United's order with Archer has a further $500 million option, which would bring the total up to 300 aircraft.</p><p class="MsoNormal">"We are working with the best manufacturing suppliers in the game — Honeywell, Safran, Garmin, FACC — so we think from a certification perspective, we've nearly eliminated all the risks," Goel said.</p><p class="MsoNormal">He added that the biggest priority for the coming year is the "final stages of certification."</p><p class="MsoNormal">Archer has also started building its main manufacturing plant in Georgia, where it will work with the auto giant Stellantis to produce up to 2,300 aircraft a year. Archer added that the factory will be capable of producing 650 vehicles a year when it starts its first phase of operations in 2024.</p><p class="MsoNormal">"Already on day one, it will be less than half the cost of a helicopter," Goel told BI. Helicopters cost about $10 per passenger mile, whereas Goel said the Midnight will cost about $4 to $5 per passenger mile.</p><p class="MsoNormal">He said it's cheaper because there's "very little maintenance cost" and "it's 100% all electric so there's no fuel cost."</p><p>"As we increase the utilization and load factor, the aircraft will be at $2 to $3," he added. "And then from there, you add in autonomy, scale manufacturing, our long-term goal is to get about $1."</p><h2>Self-flying taxis</h2><p>Not every eVTOL company is prioritizing passenger transportation. AutoFlight, a Chinese startup with offices in Germany and California, is first targeting certification for its cargo eVTOL.</p><p class="MsoNormal">"Developing an aircraft is a really expensive adventure, and we believe the cargo version will be much quicker to certify, and produce and sell, and generate revenues," Jocelyn Moreau, AutoFlight Europe's head of operations, told BI.</p><p class="MsoNormal">"What we see here at the Dubai Airshow, and at the Paris Air Show, is that there will be a high demand for cargo as well as for passengers," he added.</p><p class="MsoNormal">Moreau, a former manager at Airbus Helicopters Deutschland GmbH, joined the eVTOL space because "it was the new revolution going on."</p><p class="MsoNormal">"With two colleagues of mine, we left Airbus to be part of the revolution, and try on our own an exciting adventure," he said.</p><p class="MsoNormal">Moreau told BI he expects AutoFlight's cargo eVTOL to be certified in China within six to 12 months, but that a passenger version could take another two or three years to get certified.</p><p class="MsoNormal">The emphasis on cargo also means AutoFlight is better positioned to explore self-flying-aircraft options.</p><p class="MsoNormal">"We are already flying autonomously with the cargo version," Moreau said. "There is no pilot, there's no cockpit. There's nothing."</p><p class="MsoNormal">"For the passenger version, we believe we need a pilot first," he added. "And maybe in a few years' time when people are used to flying, then there will be no pilot."</p><p class="MsoNormal">Goldstein said Archer is aiming for its aircraft to be fully autonomous in 2030. It's made progress after reaching an agreement with Wisk Aero, an eVTOL company owned by Boeing, following a two-year dispute.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/flying-taxi-rivals-archer-and-wisk-settle-dispute-will-collaborate-2023-8">Wisk accused Archer of stealing trade secrets</a> in a 2021 lawsuit. The complaint alleged that Archer hired ten Wisk engineers and produced an aircraft with "a striking resemblance" to a Wisk patent. A forensic investigation found that two of those former Wisk engineers downloaded thousands of files shortly before leaving for Archer, according to the lawsuit.</p><p class="MsoNormal">In August, the rivals settled and agreed to work together. Wisk is now Archer's exclusive provider of autonomous-flying technology, and Boeing agreed to invest an undisclosed amount into Archer as part of a $215 million funding round.</p><p>In a press release, Archer said the agreement would help it avoid "hundreds of millions of dollars of spending" on research and development.</p><h2>'You don't get tired of them — they just look right'</h2><div type="image" title="Frank Stephenson wears a black suit and poses in front of AutoFlight's Prosperity I" height="1399" width="2500" msid="106100928" hostid="261"></div><p>After Lilium, Stephenson also designed eVTOLs for Archer and AutoFlight, which he said is "probably the most effective design so far."</p><p class="MsoNormal">Unlike Archer's Midnight, AutoFlight's Prosperity I doesn't need the propellors to tilt — horizontal rotors take the aircraft up and down, and the ones on the back push it forward.</p><p class="MsoNormal">"The intention I always had from the beginning was: How simple can you reduce all the elements, and it doesn't look boring, it still looks futuristic?"</p><p class="MsoNormal">"It ends up looking beautiful because it's so functional when it does," Stephenson told BI. "There's nothing really ugly in nature — something might shock you, but it doesn't look wrong."</p><p class="MsoNormal">"The cars and the objects that are designed for efficient functionality tend to last a long time in terms of aesthetics. You don't get tired of them — they just look right."</p><p class="MsoNormal">"It's an incredibly interesting field to be in right now," he added. "30 years from now, I might sound stupid. But right now, we're breaking new ground."</p>

Flying taxis could take to the skies by next year. Here's why the aviation industry is so excited about eVTOLs.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Emirates announced investments of more than $1.5 billion to keep its 119-strong fleet of Airbus A380s flying.</li><li>The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inside-emirates-new-airbus-a380-cabin-premium-economy-first-class-2022-1">quad-engine superjumbo has been the airline's flagship plane</a> for over 15 years.</li></ul><p>Although global airlines continue to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/airbus-draws-heart-sky-with-last-airbus-a380-built-emirates-2021-12">retire the mammoth Airbus A380</a> in favor of more fuel-efficient twin-engine aircraft, Emirates is long from giving up on its flagship airplane.</p><p>At the Dubai Airshow in mid-November, the UAE-based carrier <a target="_blank" href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=1e0c0142b002e7485c33a6e8ae63cc30c9751b6b5e58d36419f744b42643b8a0&amp;postID=655d04d3e8d3bfe1cd86c953&amp;postSlug=emirates-invests-over-1-billion-in-a380-overhaul-keep-flying-2023-11&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.emirates.com%2Fmedia-centre%2Femirates-a380-fleet-to-fly-better-well-into-the-next-decade-with-significant-investments-signed-at-dubai-airshow-2023%2F%3Futm_medium%3Dsocial_organic_pr%26utm_source%3Dlinkedin%26utm_campaign%3D20231115_a380investments%26utm_content%3Dglobal">announced</a> a series of investments that would keep its giant fleet of A380s flying for years to come.</p><p>The company, which is the world's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inside-emirates-new-airbus-a380-cabin-premium-economy-first-class-2022">largest operator of the over $400 million A380,</a> said in a statement that it signed deals worth over $1.5 billion that will contribute to the maintenance and repair of its superjumbo.</p><p>Collins Aerospace, Honeywell, Pratt &amp; Whitney, and Lufthansa Technik, among others, have all been tapped for the project to help Emirates "optimise its A380 fleet's lifespan and unlock additional operational efficiency gains, all at its exacting standards."</p><p>The companies will provide services like engine maintenance and a landing gear overhaul.</p><p>"The A380 has been and will continue to be very much part of the Emirates story," company president Sir Tim Clark said in a press release.</p><p>In total, the airline took 123 of the 251 double-deckers delivered — meaning it bought up nearly half of the world's A380s. <a target="_blank" href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=2e96509278e11334aa34acadb3f42eb3364abb97e377bd15b36fb0980ddea9a2&amp;postID=655d04d3e8d3bfe1cd86c953&amp;postSlug=emirates-invests-over-1-billion-in-a380-overhaul-keep-flying-2023-11&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.emirates.com%2Fmedia-centre%2Femirates-group-announces-record-half-year-performance-for-2023-24%2F">Emirates</a> still operates nearly 90 of its 119-strong superjumbo fleet, with plans to reinstate more "in the coming months."</p><p>"Our continued commitment to and confidence in the A380 is why we're investing heavily to keep the fleet in optimal shape and pristine condition," Clark said. "The A380 will remain core to our network and customer proposition for the next decade, and we want to ensure our fleet is in tip-top shape." </p><p>The billion-dollar investment comes despite Airbus shutting down production of the A380 in 2021 after <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/airbus-delivers-final-airbus-a380-as-more-airlines-reinstate-jet-2021-12">sending off its last double-decker to Emirates.</a></p><p>The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/airbus-a380-superjumbo-history-boeing-747-emirates-2017-11">planemaker ended the A380 program</a> for myriad reasons.</p><p>Not only was the jet's popularity dwindling as airlines sought out more fuel-efficient airliners like the Airbus A350 and the Boeing 787, but the company was losing money on production.</p><p>"In the end, you have to face facts, and we could see that we were <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/european-startup-airline-bought-a380-fly-between-the-us-uk-2023-5">building A380s faster than people were ordering them</a>," Bob Lange, Airbus' head of business analysis and market forecast, said in 2019.</p><p>But, despite the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/flying-on-an-air-france-airbus-a380-photos-review-2020-5">pandemic travel lull that proved to be the nail in the coffin for many A380 fleets</a>, Emirates is doubling down. It sees the high-capacity, long-haul aircraft as a key to powering its hub-and-spoke business model — especially as the post-pandemic travel boom continues to rage on.</p><p>A handful of other carriers, like British Airways, Qantas, and Korean Air, are following Emirates' strategy, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-airlines-are-falling-back-in-love-with-airbus-a380-2021-10">using the A380 to maximize capacity</a> on high-demand routes.</p><p>In a 2021 interview with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnn.com/2021/08/30/business/qantas-ceo-travel-outlook/index.html">CNN</a>, former Qantas CEO Alan Joyce described the A380 as the "perfect vehicle" to handle the pent-up COVID demand, specifically pointing to routes between its Australian hubs and places like London and Los Angeles.</p><p>Emirates' recent announcement is the latest example of its commitment to the A380. In January, the first of 67 superjumbos completed its full cabin overhaul as part of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/see-emirates-a380-first-class-suite-bar-shower-2023-6">Emirates' $2 billion retrofit program.</a></p><p>The most significant change is the addition of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/emirates-premium-economy-cabin-on-a380-tour-2023-5">premium economy, a first for Emirates.</a></p>

How Emirates will keep the world's largest airliner flying for years to come —even though Airbus doesn't make it anymore

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="11896633" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="airbus" source="Orion">Airbus</keyword> is about to deliver the final <keyword id="12337726" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="airbus-a380" source="Orion">Airbus A380</keyword> passenger jet to <keyword id="12169028" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="emirates" source="Orion">Emirates</keyword> in December.</li><li>Pilots <keyword id="11896631" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="flying" source="Orion">flying</keyword> the last test flight before delivery drew a heart in the sky at 35,000 feet. </li></ul><p>Airbus has reached the end of the runway with the Airbus A380. </p><p>The final A380 has been built at Airbus' production facility in Toulouse, France, and just flew its final test flight before Emirates takes delivery of the aircraft.</p><p>Emirates is expected to take delivery of the last A380 in December to join its fleet of 115 A380s and counting.</p><p>But before handing the keys over for the last time, Airbus paid tribute to its largest passenger jet that's been a fixture for more than two decades. </p><p>MSN272 departed Hamburg Finkenwerder Airport for a routine test flight on Sunday that lasted nearly five hours, according to <a href="https://www.flightradar24.com/data/aircraft/f-wwsh#2a29735a">Flightradar 24</a> data. Airbus flight test pilots brought the aircraft up to a top altitude of 43,000 feet as it flew in near-racetrack patterns over Germany and northwestern Poland.</p><p>One of the final maneuvers performed by pilots was drawing a heart shape in the sky at 30,000 feet. </p><blockquote class="twitter-tweet blockquote" data-lang="en" data-cards="" data-conversation="">—Airbus (@Airbus) <a href="https://twitter.com/mims/statuses/1470308219465650176">December 13, 2021</a></blockquote><p>"Nothing but love for the A380, as the final superjumbo to join our fleet takes to the skies for one last test flight," Emirates <a href="https://twitter.com/emirates/status/1470076084612120576">tweeted</a> of the occasion. </p><h2>The end of the superjumbo era</h2><p>The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/airbus-a380-superjumbo-history-boeing-747-emirates-2017-11">A380 has been flying since 2005</a> when Airbus finally overtook Boeing and its 747 in having built the world's largest passenger jet.</p><p>For many airlines, the A380 has been a status symbol to show off on their most high-profile routes, and most didn't order more than 20 models for their fleets. Emirates has been the only airline to make the A380 the backbone of its fleet, using it for flights from Dubai as far as Los Angeles and as close as Muscat, Oman. </p><p>But the past few years have solidified the aircraft as obsolete, too large, and too expensive in the age of efficient twin-engine aircraft like the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and Airbus A350 XWB. Qantas CEO Alan Joyce previously said that the airline <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/qantas-ceo-alan-joyce-on-the-dreamliner-versus-a380-c-series-safety-2017-10">could fly two Dreamliners for less than the price of one Airbus A380</a> on the same route.</p><p>While the A380 is one of Airbus' lowest selling aircraft with only 251 orders in more than 20 years of development and production, it's been a favorite of customers thanks to its abundance of space and the extra features that airlines have been able to offer. </p><p>Etihad Airways opted to use the A380 as the sole platform for "The Residence," or the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/etihad-airways-likely-retiring-airbus-a380-and-the-residence-2021-3">luxury airborne apartments for which travelers could pay upwards of $20,000</a>. And on Emirates, two of the first class lavatories have been converted into "shower spas" where travelers can <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inside-exclusive-first-class-spa-onboard-an-emirates-airbus-a380-2021-11">take a hot shower mid-flight complete with luxury Bulgari products</a>. </p><p>Etihad has not yet decided whether to keep or part with its Airbus A380s, which currently sit in storage around the globe. Tony Douglas, Etihad's chief executive officer, told Insider at the Dubai Airshow in November that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/etihad-airways-ceo-airbus-a380-residence-apartments-may-be-reinstated-2021-12">the A380s are not "in the plan at the moment" but "If the economics of it work, they're back in."</a></p><p>The journey to build the final A380 has spanned the length of the COVID-19 pandemic, the same pandemic that's spurred airlines like Air France and Lufthansa to abandon the aircraft. Airbus <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/last-airbus-a380-fuselage-delivered-to-toulouse-factory-for-assembly-2020-6#getting-there-requires-a-complex-system-of-ships-barges-and-trucks-that-meet-in-langon-france-near-the-french-atlantic-coast-for-the-final-haul-to-the-final-assembly-line-6">trucked the final A380's fuselage through France in June 2020</a> after its parts arrived from France, Germany, Spain, and the UK.</p><p>But even as the A380's route map continues to shrink amid retirements and no new aircraft in production, loyal airlines will keep the world's largest passenger jet flying for decades to come. </p>

During one stress test, a door on the plane blew off, <a href="https://onemileatatime.com/boeing-777x-delivery-delay/">aviation site One Mile At A Time reported.</a></p><p>Clark met with Steve Dickson, the head of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA,) earlier on Tuesday to discuss the 777x's certification progress.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5dd53018fd9db267731fd652-914/777x-2.jpg" border="0" alt="Boeing 777x" data-mce-source="Boeing" /><p class="source"><span>Boeing</span></p><p class="caption">One of Boeing's new 777x aircraft in a hangar.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>"The FAA will take its time and do it the way it wants to do it rather than being guided by the manufacturer," he told Reuters.</p><p>Emirates has ordered more of Boeings new 777x aircraft than any other airline, with an order for 150 inked in 2013. That number was reduced to 126 by Clark on Wednesday, <a href="https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-emirates-airshow/emirates-orders-30-boeing-787-reduces-777x-order-to-126-jets-idUKKBN1XU0TI">Reuters reported.</a></p><p>Emirates also announced it placed a $9 billion order for 30 of Boeing's 787 Dreamliners to make up for the reduction in 777x.</p><p>While Boeing have new aircraft on the way, the existing 737 Max craft remains <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boeing-737-max-timeline-history-full-details-2019-9?r=US&amp;IR=T">the subject of intense scrutiny and criticism</a> following two deadly crashes.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5dd53041fd9db2666671f372-1000/k66476-13.jpg" border="0" alt="Boeing 737 Max 8" data-mce-source="Boeing" /><p class="source"><span>Boeing</span></p><p class="caption">One of Boeing's fleet of 737 Max craft.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>157 people died when an 737 Max operated by Ethiopian Airlines crashed in March 2019. It followed the deaths of 189 people who died when a Lion Air 737 Max crashed in Indonesia in October 2018.</p><p>All 737 Max craft <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/regulators-find-gaps-in-boeings-737-max-software-documentation-sources-2019-11">were grounded worldwide</a> in March 2019 following the disasters.
