<ul><li>A section of students and teachers of various universities in the national capital on Tuesday voiced their concern over holding online classes, fee hike and lack of infrastructural support in the varsities amid the COVID-19 pandemic. </li><li><keyword id="66" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi">Delhi</keyword> University is conducting online open book exams for final semester students of postgraduate and undergraduate courses. </li></ul> A section of students and teachers of various universities in the national capital on Tuesday voiced their concern over holding online classes, fee hike and lack of infrastructural support in the varsities amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Delhi University is conducting online open book exams for final semester students of postgraduate and undergraduate courses. The move was opposed by students and teachers who were demanding that the exams be scrapped. The varsity has also commenced online classes for third and fifth semester students from August 10. During an online briefing, Abha Dev Habib, a Delhi University professor, said teachers and students have been left out from the decision-making process to hold online classes. "The decision of online open book exams was taken without thinking about students. What will happen to students in Kashmir and those stuck in floods. The students do not have gadgets for online classes. "The decision was taken without consulting the statutory bodies -- the Academic and Executive Council," she alleged. Unni Maya, a student of Lady Shri Ram College in Delhi University, said the varsity has gone ahead with the decision to hold online classes without thinking about the mental health and well-being of students. Taking online classes means that students have to spend a high screen time in front of their mobiles or laptops which impacts their health. She demanded that the varsity should think about funding and providing gadgets to students and it should also release department-wise data on how many students have availed online classes. Students and teachers of other universities also raised similar issues. Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union president Aishe Ghosh said the varsity administration is not concerned about teaching-learning process or about students in Kashmir who still do not have access to a proper internet connectivity, or about flood-affected students or those who contracted COVID-19. "Students are being pressurised to register for the next semester at a time when the UGC has also said that the varsities must finish the current semester by September 30. There is no meaning of registration. The varsity administration is continuously creating issues," she said. She also alleged that the students of MBA and Engineering are being charged lakhs of rupees despite not having access to labs and having part-time faculty. "I would call it daylight robbery. Even the representatives from these departments have been pressurised to not raise their voice," she said. She also urged the varsity to ensure phased return of students to the campus by following proper medical protocols and establishing quarantine centres inside the premises. Voices were also raised from Delhi government-run Ambedkar University against online classes and how the administration and even the state government has not heard their pleas. Shubhojeet Dey of Ambedkar University said they had conducted a survey among students and found that 48 per cent of students had access to smartphones while two per cent did not have access to any gadget for accessing online classes. Only 50 per cent of the students have access to laptops, he said, adding that 62 per cent out of these do not have laptops for more than three hours since the laptop is also used by their siblings, who are either studying or are working. "It was found that 73 per cent of students do not have stable internet connection and 98 per cent of the female students were also supposed to contribute to household chores. We have even approached the authorities and even the Delhi government with our problems but there has been no resolution," he added. The students had boycotted the orientation class which was held to introduce the students to courses. Listing out the demands of the students, Dey said they want that the classes should be postponed by a month and laptops should be procured for students from disadvantaged sections and data packs should be given to all the students. Delhi University hikes fees, holds online classes — students and teachers voice their concern

<ul><li>The University Grants Commission (UGC) has just issued a letter saying that the colleges falling under the university can now apply for an autonomous status using an online portal. </li><li>The autonomous college will be able to design their own courses, fee structure, and admissions. </li><li>Earlier in 2017, the move for privatisation was largely opposed by students and teachers.</li></ul>As colleges under the University of Delhi were considering to seek autonomy for some time, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has just issued a letter saying that the colleges falling under the university can now <a href="http://13.71.18.76:8085/College/Registration">apply</a> for an autonomous status online. The portal is now active on the official UGC site trying to give an impetus to colleges to become autonomous, should they choose to do so. However, these colleges will be affiliated to a university, TOI reported. In a notification, the UGC said it is inviting applications to colleges that want to pull away and be their own thing. This means that the colleges will now be able to roll out their own course structure, admissions, student fees and academic faculty staff. Moreover, the <keyword id="156640" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Autonomous-colleges">autonomous colleges</keyword> will also enjoy the liberty to announce results and issue marksheets as a separate entity. The move may affect students who are planning to enroll in several courses under Delhi University. Back in 2016, UGC had<a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/cities/delhi/six-autonomous-colleges-du-marches-ahead/"> floated guidelines</a> for autonomous colleges, encouraging colleges to apply. Given that, Delhi University had pushed colleges to become autonomous institutions. However, this step towards privatisation was largely opposed by students and teachers, finding the move ‘disastrous.’ According to media reports, this may also lead to lack of fund support from the government as the colleges will only pay for courses they can afford. The application form has been issued on the official website of University Grants Commission (UGC).

For the remaining amount, CBSE will take up reimbursement of increased fees directly with Delhi state government after finalising the list of candidates, news agency IANS reported quoting a statement from CBSE. Then proposed fee hikes Last week, the board had increased the exam registration fee for SC and ST students by 24 times, making it ₹1,200 from the existing ₹50. The board also doubled up the exam fee for class 10th and 12th students of general category to ₹1,500. Earlier, the registration fee for general category students was ₹750. This is after five years that the board has increased the examination fee, after it faced a loss of ₹250 crore. Given that, several student bodies and parents have been protesting the move. The All India Democratic Students’ Organisation also called for a nationwide protest. For instance, divide science into four grades — science for doctors and engineers, science for sportsperson, science for humanities. If a child wants to become a journalist, he can take A grade language and maybe C grade of science so that if he has to cover science, he is well-versed with the basics," Sisodia explained. The move aims to provide a blended learning experience to students. As of now, the school curriculum helps them with only 10% of entrance examination syllabus, making them go for extra coaching classes. Delhi will get a new education board which will blend entrance exam prep with school syllabus

<ul><li>The <keyword id="151282" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="University-of-Delhi">University of Delhi</keyword> (DU) enrolled more students than the available number of available seats for 2019. </li><li>Nearly 6,000 new seats were added this year — including 282 for the undergraduate courses. </li><li>The number of students scoring 95% and above has increased by 38.4% this year. </li><li>To accommodate the increased number of students, the colleges have allotted 80 students per teacher.</li></ul>The University of Delhi (DU) enrolled more students than the number of available seats for 2019. Many colleges under the university are admitting 20-40% more than their capacity. This is despite the fact that the university had already increased the number of seats, after implementing reservations for EWS (economically weaker sections). Recently, the Indian government announced that <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/education-today/news/story/ews-quota-in-du-mostly-vacant-due-to-high-cut-offs-1567442-2019-07-12">10% reservation</a> for the EWS category in government jobs and educational institutions. Nearly 6,000 new seats were added this year — including 282 for undergraduate courses. The university has 62,000 seats in total for undergraduate and postgraduate admissions this year. Foreign admissions are also on the rise this year. As many as 1,000 foreign students were admitted this year. Stressed infrastructure The ‘over admissions’ is not new to the university. However, increase in student admissions is unmatched compared to the previous years. For instance, Miranda House enrolled roughly 1,814 students, 714 more than the number of seats. “We opened a new academic block and have turned some board and seminar rooms into classrooms as well,” Principal Bijayalaxmi Nanda <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/education/du-admits-students-beyond-its-capacity-despite-addition-of-6000-seats/story-jWgd2sGlfo5yp8k91wCdqL.html">told</a> HT, addressing the infrastructure crunch. In fact, to accommodate them, colleges allotted 80 students per teacher. “Teachers have taken over and above their share of the workload with the increase in the number of students,” Nanda added. Zakir Hussain College witnessed 1,816 admissions against 1,580 available seats — 236 more than the designated course seats. The college is trying to accommodate students in different sections and combinations, Hindustan Times <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/education/du-admits-students-beyond-its-capacity-despite-addition-of-6000-seats/story-jWgd2sGlfo5yp8k91wCdqL.html">reported</a> citing PK Shishodia, admission official of the college. The number of students scoring 95% and above has increased by 38.4% this year, which has led to higher cut-offs in the university. According to the HT report, over 17,000 students scored 95% and above in CBSE highschool exams, which is 4,956 more than last year. Given that, the University of Delhi is considering one percent relaxation for students from government-run and rural schools. DU enrolls upto 40% more students, breaching its capacity causing infrastructure crunch

<ul><li>The University of Delhi (DU) has directed the colleges to conduct a forensic examination of the documents supplied by applicants for admission. </li><li>The admission process is expected to begin from 30 May 2019. </li><li>The university will access the class 12th results of applicants from Central Board of Secondary Education(CBSE) database.</li></ul>The University of Delhi is getting in detective mode. It’s mission: weed out fake documents submitted in student applications. While the students brace up for the admission process in Delhi University Board exam results, the university has <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/education-today/news/story/delhi-university-contacting-cbse-to-get-marksheets-directly-for-du-admissions-to-reduce-fake-document-submission-html-1480006-2019-03-17">directed the colleges to test the documents</a> submitted by the students to keep its authenticity in check. The authority has asked for the forensic analysis of the documents at the time of admission, which is expected to commence from 30 May 2019. The document forensics will be initiated in association with the Central Board of Secondary Education(CBSE) database. The move will allow the University of Delhi to access the class 12th results of the students. This comes in the back of raising concerns around the fraudulent cases in the recent past. Last year, the DUSU President Ankiv Baisoya was accused of <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/delhi-news/delhi-university-files-police-complaint-in-ankiv-baisoya-fake-degree-case-1950085">submitting fake documents</a> to the university, which led to the cancellation of his admission. Stressing on the need to have a policy in place for analysing applicants’ documents, a university official reportedly raised concerns over uniformity among the students across the varsity colleges. “Till now, different colleges had different identity cards and there was no uniformity. From this year, the identity cards will look similar but have the name of the college stamped on it. It was also found that some colleges were issuing identity cards after six months of a student getting admission, so it was felt that smart ID cards needs to be introduced,” <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/education-2/du-admission-2019-varsity-directs-colleges-to-carry-out-forensic-examination-of-documents-furnished-by-students/1591648/">PTI reported.</a> The verification and admission process While almost <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/home/education/news/du-directs-colleges-to-carry-out-forensic-examination-of-documents-furnished-by-students/articleshow/69549289.cms">80% of the applicants</a> come from CBSE, the varsity will have to conduct a separate examination of the remaining 20% of potential students. The students applying for admission will reportedly have to register in the university portal, following which they have to confirm their affiliation with CBSE. Given that, the filtered category will then undergo forensic evaluation of documents. As a standardised mechanism, the Delhi University admissions will access the students on a 70:30 ratio — for theory and practical exams, respectively. University of Delhi, CBSE will now use ‘forensics’ to detect fake documents submitted by students

Her clients pay a $100,000 initiation fee to become members at Fischer Travel, which has already gained seven new clients this year and is considering raising the initiation fee. The following has been edited for length and clarity.I've been doing this for 40 years and I've not seen anything quite like it in terms of chaos.COVID has left long-term negative effects on all aspects of travel: Airlines are dealing with staffing issues, hence the cancellations, and there's a huge shortage in general in the hospitality business – hotels, restaurants, guides, drivers, and greeters. The demand for travel is there — there's just a shortage of supply.We are accustomed to delays and cancellations, but never at the magnitude we're experiencing. The reason people come to us is they want to feel taken care of, to have flexibility, and to have options.<h2>Recently, my team planned an independent trip for a new client.</h2>We arranged French lessons for her in Provence, hiking and biking guides, and people to have dinners with her for casual French conversation. Then, after two days, the hiking and biking trails were closed because of the heat so she decided to just go to Paris instead.I felt bad for the providers that we found, but understood that she would rather be in a city, and be inside and have a museum experience. And so now we're crafting this completely different itinerary for her for Paris; we arranged chocolate-making and croissant-baking classes, and professional shoppers to take her out for a day of fashion, and we were able to curate this with just two days' notice.Pre-COVID, people traveled for maybe a week to 10 days. What we're seeing now is families and multi-gen people traveling for four to eight weeks this summer.The intensity of planning a trip of that magnitude is huge. Sometimes when they are leaving, we don't even have the back end of the trip completed yet because we're still waiting for answers from the client, and waiting for confirmations from suppliers because everyone is so delayed. Even in the very best hotels anywhere in the world, concierges are short-staffed. <h2>Lost bags are also a huge issue that's more prevalent than ever before.</h2>On another recent trip, a client's daughter, who is an equestrian, traveled from London City Airport to Nice, and checked her medication and equestrian equipment. Her bag didn't make it to Nice and it was the week of the Queen's Jubilee.She was offering a £5,000-reward for the bag. We sent people to both airports and nobody could find it. That was on Monday. On Tuesday, when they hadn't recovered the bag, I thought, what if we pack another bag in New York and we fly it to Nice.I couldn't spare an employee so I called a friend of mine. The client's assistant packed the bags in New York, I had a driver pick up my friend from New Jersey, and she boarded a 7 p.m. United flight out of Newark. A driver met my friend in Nice and they delivered two bags to the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc. My friend spent two nights in Nice, then flew back on Friday. She literally dropped everything to get on that plane, and our client's daughter had her riding things and medication on Wednesday.<h2>COVID is still an ever present issue, too.</h2>At least three times a week, there's a 411 about somebody needing to get off a yacht, or get staff off the boat or get new staff in, because somebody got COVID.We had a new client who was at a bachelorette party on Exuma in the Bahamas in May when she tested positive for COVID. Her parents called and wanted to get her home, otherwise she had to go to a quarantine hotel in Exuma for a week. I remembered reading something about the Rosewood Baha Mar flying people home if they were positive, so I called the managing director, and within three hours we had her on a private plane to Miami, through Trinity Air Ambulance for $15,000.<h2>Having a human travel agent right now is more important than ever.</h2>We have amazing relationships to get things done correctly. We're overseeing every move our clients make, checking them in, facilitating the greeter, car and driver, plus constantly monitoring any airport shutdowns, flight cancellations and entry and exit requirements. It's an ongoing process of reconfirming two or three times to ensure everything goes smoothly.We are the one point of contact for the whole trip and we don't pass that off to other people. If there was one thing I'd love to change, it would be that the service levels would be back and the response time would be a lot faster.We're seeing the most interest in Europe right now. Not that people didn't go the last few years, but it's so popular right now and people are missing it. Big families are traveling for weeks at a time to one or multiple destinations. It's not just getting the villa, it's staffing the villa and providing the sightseeing, activities, restaurants, etc. There are so many different facets to every trip.Creating magical, memorable moments is the best part of our job. Travel is not one size fits all. I try to stay in the moment, and welcome the new business and welcome the challenges and opportunities. We're working so hard and when people appreciate what we're doing for them, there's nothing like that.<h2>We've been hiring because of the demand and we know that it will take time for people to learn our business.</h2>I just hired five students coming out of amazing colleges like Cornell University School of Hotel Administration.I look for a passion, listening skills and openness to being creative. Obviously, you have to be very detail-oriented, too and you have to come in with a very open mind to work on a team because that's how you'll be successful here. It is the first time that the JMI has been placed among the top 10 universities in the NIRF rankings, the institute said. It has been given the 10th rank in the country in the "Universities" category. Last year, it was ranked 12th. Rajiv Gandhi University, the only central university of Arunachal Pradesh, ranked second in the list. Meanwhile, the Delhi University (DU) marginally improved its ranking among the universities and in the "Overall" category. However, it is behind the JMI in both categories. DU rose to the 11th position this year from 13th position last year in the university rankings. Five DU colleges were among the top 10 colleges in the rankings with Miranda House bagging the top honours for the fourth consecutive time, followed by Lady Shri Ram and Hindu College. A total of 3,771 unique institutions had offered themselves for the "Overall", category-specific or domain-specific rankings for the India Rankings 2020. Earlier, the bill proposed that the academic matters shall be under the control of the Higher Education Commission of India (HECI) while finances will be handled by the HRD ministry. At present, the UGC is responsible for university education and entrance examinations while the AICTE manages the technical education in India.
