The median monthly treatment cost rose from $5,790 in 2009-10 to $14, 580 in 2018-19.Meanwhile, only 13% of drugs in Switzerland, 2% of drugs in England, and zero drugs in Germany experienced similar price increases that rose faster than the inflation.Much of this difference could be due to how these countries price drugs. Using <a href="http://www.globalincidentmap.com/">GlobalIncidentMap.com</a>, researchers mapped the last 5,000 drug busts in the U.S. to create the <a href="http://www.rehabs.com/explore/busted/" target="_blank">American Drug Landscape</a>. 
While not a definitive representation of drug use, the resulting infographic provides an interesting nationwide view of which drugs arise where.
For instance, we learned that Delaware and Pennsylvania are partial to <a href="http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=smack">smack</a>. Also, meth is surprisingly prevalent in California — although the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/north-america-has-a-massive-meth-problem-2013-6">crazy spike in meth labs</a> seems to be on the eastern side of the country. 
The biggest takeaway: a total of 780,000 lbs of marijuana were reportedly seized in 2012, and weed-related busts accounted for 70.5% of the last 5,000.
Combined with the fact that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-failure-of-the-drug-war-in-one-map-2013-6">domestic marijuana production is rising</a>, what does this tell us? 
Essentially, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/why-the-drug-war-is-unwinnable-2013-2">the war on drugs</a> is largely driven by marijuana busts.

A Colorful Breakdown Of US Drug Seizures By State 

New York, Amid news that the US has bought up virtually the entire global supply of <keyword id="8775508" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="remdesivir">remdesivir</keyword>, a new study outlines how the drug could save lives in countries with a lower hospital capacity, such as South Africa, where Covid-19 is beginning to overwhelm intensive care units (ICUs). The study, published in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases, estimated that remdesivir's ability to shorten ICU stays could increase the number of patients treated in South Africa's ICUs by more than 50 per cent. "There are many countries with limited ICU capacity that could benefit from this double impact on mortality," says study lead author Dr Brooke Nichols, Assistant Professor at <keyword id="9539346" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-boston-university">the Boston University</keyword>. For the remdesivir study, the research team used their South African National Covid-19 Epidemiology model to look at the estimated three to six months when severe cases will exceed the country's 3,450 available ICU beds. If every one of South Africa's ICU patients with Covid-19 received remdesivir, reducing the average ICU stay, the researchers estimated that the number of patients treated in ICUs from June to December would increase from between 23,443 and 32,284 patients to between 36,383 and 47,820. The findings showed that the increased capacity of remdesivir could save as many as 6,862 lives per month as the country's cases peak and the drug could prevent the deaths of as many as 13,647 South Africans by December. The mortality rate for Covid-19 in ICUs varies from country to country and hospital to hospital, so the number of lives saved from increased ICU capacity would also vary, the study said. The research team has been modelling South Africa's Covid epidemic to help the country's government make informed decisions, and previously predicted that the country's ICU capacity could be overwhelmed as early as this month. "The hardest-hit province, the Western Cape, exceeded ICU capacity in June," the study authors informed. Earlier this month, the European Commission had authorised anti-viral drug remdesivir for the treatment against coronavirus, making it the first drug authorised at the European Union level for the treatment of Covid-19.

How remdesivir drug can save lives in nations with lower hospital capacity

London, Jun 16 () Low doses of the steroid dexamethasone can reduce deaths by one-third in severely affected <keyword id="8763838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid-19">COVID-19</keyword> patients, according to researchers who assessed the performance of the inexpensive drug in more than 2,100 people. The analysis is part of the RECOVERY (Randomised Evaluation of COVid-19 thERapY) trial which was established to test a range of potential therapies for COVID-19, including low-dose dexamethasone -- a steroid treatment. The RECOVERY trial included over 11,500 patients, enrolled from more than 175 hospitals in the UK, noted a statement published by the University of Oxford on Tuesday. In the trial, a total of 2,104 patients were randomised to receive dexamethasone six milligrammes once per day -- either by mouth or by intravenous injection -- for ten days, and were compared with 4,321 patients randomised to usual care alone. Among the patients who received usual care alone, mortality was highest in those who required ventilation (41 per cent), intermediate in those patients who required oxygen only (25 per cent), and lowest among those who did not require any respiratory intervention (13 per cent), the scientists said. They found that dexamethasone reduced deaths by one-third in ventilated patients, and by one fifth in other patients receiving oxygen only. However, the researchers said there was no benefit from dexamethasone among the patients who did not require respiratory support. Based on these results, the scientists believe that the drug could prevent nearly one death in the treatment of around eight ventilated patients, or around 25 patients requiring oxygen alone. "Dexamethasone is the first drug to be shown to improve survival in COVID-19. This is an extremely welcome result," said Peter Horby, one of the chief investigators of the trial from the University of Oxford in the UK. "The survival benefit is clear and large in those patients who are sick enough to require oxygen treatment, so dexamethasone should now become standard of care in these patients," Horby said. The drug, according to the scientists, is inexpensive, on the shelf, and can be used immediately to save lives worldwide. "These preliminary results from the RECOVERY trial are very clear --dexamethasone reduces the risk of death among patients with severe respiratory complications," said Martin Landray, another chief investigator of the trial from the University of Oxford. "COVID-19 is a global disease – it is fantastic that the first treatment demonstrated to reduce mortality is one that is instantly available and affordable worldwide," Landray added. However, the drug is banned in-competition by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) but its usage is allowed out-of-competition if athletes have the requisite Therapeutic Usage Exemption (TUE). Asian bronze-winning Indian javelin thrower Davinder Singh Kang is currently under provisional suspension after returning positive for the substance in an in-competition test conducted last year. In 2017, Real Madrid star Sergio Ramos had tested positive for the drug during the Champions League but was let off after offering an apology for the team doctor's failure to disclose the medication he had taken.

The central government has prohibited as many as 156 <keyword id="22893276" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="combination-drugs" source="keywords">combination drugs</keyword> that are often administered as painkillers, multivitamins, and antibiotics, for fever and cold, among others. In a gazette notification dated August 21, the government said that the use of the drug Fixed Dose Combination of Amylase, Protease, Glucoamylase, Pectinase, Alpha Galactosidase, Lactase, Beta-Gluconase, Cellulase, Lipase, Bromelain, Xylanase, Hemicellulase, Malt diastase, Invertase, Papain is likely to involve risk to human beings whereas safer alternatives to the said drug are available. Upon recommendations of the <keyword id="20092000" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Drugs-Technical-Advisory-Board" source="keywords">Drugs Technical Advisory Board</keyword>, the central government, in the greater interest of the public, has prohibited the manufacture for sale, sale, and distribution for human use of those drugs across the country with immediate effect. The move from the government comes after the matter was examined by an expert committee appointed by the central government, and the said expert committee considered the administration of this Fixed Dose Combination as "irrational". The Drugs Technical Advisory Board also examined the said FDC and recommended that "there is no therapeutic justification for the ingredients contained in this FDC. The FDC may involve risk to human beings. Hence in the larger public interest, it is necessary to prohibit the manufacture, sale or distribution of this FDC under section 26 A of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act 1940. In view of above, any kind of regulation or restriction to allow for any use in patients is not justifiable," the notification read. The list of banned drugs also includes drugs used for hair treatments, antiparasitic, skincare, anti-allergic. The medicines combined in more than one drug in a single pill are Fixed dose combination drugs FDC, these drugs are also known as cocktail drugs. The Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance supports the decision of the government. Sudarshan Jain, Secretary General, IPA told that, "this has been going for many years and there was a committee which reviewed the whole thing... This is a right step in the interest of patients and all aspects have been taken into consideration." "They have given the opportunity to give the data to support their products, so the right products will continue and when there is no data to support then companies have to withdraw it," Jain added. To expand the supply of Remdesivir, US-based Gilead earlier announced non-exclusive voluntary licensing agreements with generic pharmaceutical manufacturers based in India, Egypt and Pakistan. Trump introduced another executive order on the same issue, two months prior that was held back so he could negotiate a better deal with drug companies. Mumbai, Jan 29 () Domestic pharma companies have the potential to grow their revenue from the US by almost five times at around USD 30 billion from USD 6.5 billion in 2018 if they properly tap just 10 of the widely consumed drugs in the world's largest drug market, according to an analysis by the World Trade Centre. Despite being the largest export market for domestic pharma makers, they served only a miniscule 5.6 per cent or USD 6.5 billion of the over USD 116 billion American pharma imports of in 2018, show the <keyword id="8679401" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="WTC-data">WTC data</keyword>. Despite having good demand from across the markets, primarily due to lower prices and easy availability, India controls only 2.4 per cent of global pharma exports. 
 With robust manufacturing capabilities, domestic pharma companies have the potential to enhance their exports to the US by almost five times to USD 29.6 billion, says the WTC in a note quoting data from the UN's International Trade Commission.
 The WTC has identified 10 products that constitute about 25 per cent of American pharma imports in 2018 at USD 29.6 billion which constitute about 17 per cent of US imports from India.
 These ten products include single vitamins, medicaments affecting central nervous system, cough &amp; cold preparations, dermatological agents &amp; local anesthetics, chemical contraceptives, sterile surgical catgut, antineoplastic &amp; immunosupressive medicaments, and structural analogues among others.
 These 10 products constitute around 25 per cent of American drug imports and but the share of Indian companies in 2018 was only worth USD 1 billion. 
 Domestic pharma companies shipped products worth USD 6.53 billion in 2018 to the US, which was only 5.61 per cent of total American imports worth USD 116.35 billion, showed WTC data. BEN MR
