The startup was cofounded as a nonprofit research lab by a group of 11 people in 2015.Since then, it has grown rapidly and amassed a wealth of users since it launched ChatGPT in 2022. In September, the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-investors-latest-funding-round-2024-10">$157 billion company</a> said it has more than 1 million paying business users globally, a sharp increase from 600,000 in April.Alongside its rapid growth, the company has been hit by a series of controversies over the years, like the brief ousting of its CEO, Sam Altman, in November 2023. More recently, a wave of high-profile exits has put it in the spotlight, with executives like former CTO <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mira-murati-openai-cto-leaving-executive-memo-staff-2024-9">Mira Murati leaving last month</a>. Barret Zoph, the vice president of research, and Bob McGrew, chief research officer, left on the same day as Murati. OpenAI has also lost two cofounders this year: Ilya Sutskever, who <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ilya-sutskever-leaving-openai-6-months-after-failed-altman-ouster-2024-5">announced his departure</a> in May, and John Schulman, who <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-rivals-anthropic-perplexity-on-prowl-after-wave-exec-departures-2024-10">defected to its rival Anthropic</a> in August. As of October 2024, the company had just three remaining cofounders, although one is on sabbatical until the end of the year. He was briefly ousted in November 2023, but after a dramatic few days, he returned and then created an entirely new board. <h2 id="689e24e3-623f-46d0-9279-8a4bdde28202">John Schulman</h2>Schulman took over the position of overseeing OpenAI's Superalignment team in May after Jan Leike left <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jan-leike-ilya-sutskever-resignations-superalignment-openai-superintelligence-safe-humanity-2024-5">to join rival Anthropic</a>. The team was tasked with mitigating AI risks. But in August, Schulman announced in an X post that he made the "difficult decision" to leave OpenAI. Explaining the reasons behind his decisions, he wrote, "This choice stems from my desire to deepen my focus on AI alignment, and to start a new chapter of my career where I can return to hands-on technical work."<h2 id="f8cedb91-55a6-415b-82ab-193012de0cfb">Wojciech Zaremba</h2>Zaremba is one of the last few remaining cofounders at OpenAI, where he leads its robotics efforts.In March, Zaremba said it was "sad" to witness <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk">Ekon Musk</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sam-altman-chatgpt-openai-ceo-career-net-worth-ycombinator-prepper-2023-1">Altman</a> engage in an "unnecessary fight" after <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-sues-sam-altman-betrays-openai-mission-chatgpt-2024-3">Musk filed a lawsuit</a> against OpenAI and some of its cofounders.Zaremba wrote, "It would be so much better to put your creative energy into building the future you dream of over a quarrel. May you (both) be happy and find peace."<h2 id="d9068127-718f-439e-b289-0e8e8d17c1ac">Ilya Sutskever</h2><div type="image" title="Ilya Sutskever" height="4000" width="6000" msid="113906840" hostid="261" sizebytes="1902732"></div>Sutskever departed his role as chief scientist at OpenAI in May. The move came six months after <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2023/11/openai-ilya-sutskever-sam-altman-fired/676072/">reports</a> suggested he played a key role in the brief ousting of Altman. Soon after, Sustkever said he <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-cofounder-ilya-sutskever-deeply-regrets-participating-ousting-sam-altman-2023-11">"deeply" regretted participating</a> in the board's action against Altman.In June, Sustskever announced in an X post that he was starting a new company called Safe Superintelligence Inc. The company aims to develop superintelligence safely, a form of AI capable of surpassing human intelligence. It has since raised $1 billion.<h2 id="2cab76fe-deec-4f22-9d6a-80a05f7f17e4">Greg Brockman</h2>Brockman, president of OpenAI, said in a <a target="_blank" rel=" nofollow" class="" href="https://x.com/gdb/status/1820644694264791459">statement on X </a>in August that he's taking a sabbatical through year-end."First time to relax since co-founding OpenAI 9 years ago. The mission is far from complete; we still have a safe AGI to build," he wrote.<h2 id="0a56bf17-afaf-461c-a145-76b5c05aec08">Durk Kingma</h2>After over two years as a research scientist and team lead at OpenAI, Kingma joined Google DeepMind in 2018. In October, he announced in an X post that he was joining Anthropic.He said its approach to developing AI "resonates significantly" with his own beliefs. According to his LinkedIn profile, Kingma will work on machine learning research. <h2 id="f6856cf8-7f98-4fb6-90b0-af65f27a6138">Andrej Karpathy</h2><div type="image" title="Andrej Karpathy wearing a black sweater" height="2991" width="3701" msid="113906852" hostid="261" sizebytes="233348"></div>Research scientist Karpathy has had two stints working at OpenAI. The first time he left was in 2017, to join Tesla. He then boomeranged back to OpenAI in 2023, before leaving a year later to launch AI education startup Eureka Labs.<h2 id="028633d2-1c8d-4695-ac8e-c459c927b581">‎Vicki Cheung</h2>Cheung left OpenAI in 2017 to join the ride-hailing firm Lyft after she spent two years as the startup's head of infrastructure and a founding engineer. She is now the chief technology officer of the machine learning firm Gantry, which she cofounded with another former OpenAI researcher.<h2 id="6e502831-6b5b-45d1-97dd-fb53336a2920">Elon Musk</h2><div type="image" title="Elon Musk" height="4336" width="5780" msid="113906842" hostid="261" sizebytes="1174710"></div>The billionaire runs Tesla, SpaceX, The Boring Company, and he founded the AI startup xAI in 2023. Musk sued OpenAI in February, accusing the ChatGPT maker of abandoning its founding mission. In a blog post OpenAI published after Musk sued the company, the ChatGPT maker said he left in February 2018. However, Musk's lawyers argued in the first lawsuit that he "continued to make contributions to OpenAI" until mid-September 2020. Musk dropped the lawsuit in June and then <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-sues-openai-sam-altman-again-why-2024-8">filed a fresh lawsuit</a> in August, with his lawyers arguing he was "assiduously manipulated" by Altman and Brockman into cofounding OpenAI. <h2 id="031840ed-1fc0-4f6e-9f5c-92fa5e0ca491">Pamela Vagata</h2>Vagata is one of the lesser-known cofounders of OpenAI. Nor does she include the company on her LinkedIn profile. However, she was listed as a founding member on an early version of the company's website. According to her LinkedIn profile, she used to work at Facebook as an AI research engineer before joining Stripe as a software engineer in 2016. She left in 2019 as an AI tech lead. In 2021, she became a founding partner at venture capital firm Pebblebed.<h2 id="458442af-c30e-4306-8317-192aa0b8648d">Trevor Blackwell</h2>Blackwell left the company in 2017. According to his LinkedIn profile, he is a roboticist and was a partner at Y Combinator until 2020. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Nvidia has been a cash cow for investors lucky enough to have bought in before the AI-fueled rally.</li><li>Shares of the company have gained 1,500% since 2019 as its GPUs power the AI revolution.</li></ul>The dizzying rise of Nvidia stock in recent years has produced extraordinary gains for many retail investors, especially those who got in before the chipmaker became an artificial-intelligence superpower.The stock's steep climb — up over 1,500% since 2019 — has transformed the lives of some of Nvidia's long-term retail investors, resulting in comfier retirements, new cars, and gains worth millions for some. Business Insider reviewed brokerage and account statements to verify the gains and account balances of the investors it spoke with, some of whom asked to be identified by their first names only to protect their privacy. Tom, a 48-year-old retail investor in New Jersey, first bought Nvidia in 2011, when the stock was valued at just about $5 a share. He put in $12,000 at the time and then another $50,000 in 2022. His total stake is now worth $3 million. His fortune, which remains mostly invested and untouched, was a matter of research and good timing, he said."They were the original creators of the GPUs," he said. "I'm not even much of a techie. I'm not a computer person at all, but I knew that the GPUs would be worth something one day."Nvidia went from a gaming icon to an AI superpower seemingly overnight. In the early days of the pandemic, its stock climbed as gamers, with time on their hands under COVID-19 lockdowns, scrambled to upgrade their computer rigs with the latest Nvidia GPUs.Then, in November 2022, the debut of OpenAI's ChatGPT fueled a run of stunning growth for Nvidia as its GPUs were the only game in town when it came to powering such AI programs. The stock has essentially gone parabolic since. According to Vanda Research, Nvidia has become the top stock among retail investors, surpassing retail portfolio concentrations of Apple, Tesla, and SPY, the most popular S&amp;P 500 exchange-traded fund. Tom said his Nvidia stake was worth about three times what he had in his 401(k) and that he felt more comfortable that he'd be able to live well in retirement, a concern that loomed over him before he went in on Nvidia.<h2>Generational wealth</h2>Kiana Danial is the 40-year-old founder of Invest Diva, a company that helps women take control of their financial future and create generational wealth.Danial hadn't heard of Nvidia before 2015, when she married her husband, who was a gamer in his free time. Danial said she liked to invest in products she uses, but when she heard her husband talk about how much he loved Nvidia, she decided to buy the stock.She first bought Nvidia in June 2016. She purchased 10 shares and shortly after continued setting new buy orders every month. "The investments started growing pretty rapidly," Danial said.Nvidia shares tumbled by more than 30% in 2018. During that time, Danial continued adding to her positions and started adding Nvidia to her Roth IRA and a Roth IRA she set up for her daughter. Danial sold the bulk of her shares in February and March 2023 to help partially cover a large down payment on a second home. <div type="image" title="Pool at Kiana Danial's house" height="1024" width="2465" msid="109541559" hostid="261"></div>Danial sold 800 shares over a six-week period for about $188,795, bringing her total number of shares down to 323. "I'm obviously kicking myself," Danial said about selling the stock. "But we bought our dream house and it's beautiful."The stock she still owns has left her with $202,940 in gains. She doesn't plan on selling her shares anytime soon and intends to buy more.Danial's daughter recently turned 6, and the account Danial set up for her has grown 568% and is worth around $11,000.The investors Business Insider spoke with piled into Nvidia early on because of its renown among PC gamers, but today, the company's chips are the lynchpin of the AI revolution — and there is virtually zero competition.The company's dominance has made it hard to find anyone willing to give the bear case, though <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/nvidia-stock-price-prediction-artificial-intelligence-gpu-earnings-forecast-rally-2024-4">some analysts have recently sounded more hesitant</a> about further gains after the stock's meteoric rally. <h2>New financial security </h2>Rick, a 36-year-old retail investor in Texas, started buying Nvidia in 2009. The stock caught his eye because, at the time, the company seemed like the future of gaming. He invested $600, which he described as a wild-card bet. "And so $600 turned into $140K," Rick said. With Nvidia, Rick said he felt he had a safety net to fall back on. He's spent only a small portion of his gains so far: $15,000 to flip a car he worked on, a hobby he said he wouldn't have gotten into without the Nvidia money. For his 10th anniversary, he and his wife packed their bags for a $14,000 getaway in Costa Rica."I had zero stress about it. It was like, 'We can spend as much as we want on this trip,'" he said.That sense of security that such a windfall provides was the top theme among the Nvidia investors BI connected with. It's a similar story for Chris Downs, a 66-year-old who lives in rural Missouri and retired from his job as a math teacher three years ago.He's been investing for a while, but his interest in Nvidia began when he bought a new computer for video editing at the start of the COVID-19 quarantines. Downs said he splurged on an Nvidia graphics card for his setup and was impressed. He bought 112 shares in March 2020 for $79 each. In July 2023, he sold 28 shares of Nvidia at $436 apiece to offset losses from other investments. Now he has 84 shares left, worth over $65,000 based on Monday's prices, in addition to other stocks. He said he would probably sell some of his Nvidia shares closer to the election, but he's planning to invest the proceeds for his four children, as his parents and grandparents had done for their kids.Downs said his lifestyle wasn't lavish but that he tried to travel every month. Places he's been to include Bolivia, Paris, and Mexico City, and he plans to go to Spain at the end of April.He said security was the biggest perk of his investment, as well as knowing that he could cover unpredictable financial mishaps. "It's nice in retirement not to have to worry," Downs said.

<ul><li>Wall Street's vision of a Goldilocks scenario for the stock market and economy is unraveling.</li><li>The Fed's "higher for longer" mantra has dashed hopes that a recession is avoidable.</li><li>The US economy is feeling the lagging effects of tight monetary policy as risk factors converge.</li></ul>Wall Street's dream of a Goldilocks scenario for the stock market and economy is probably dead. At best, it's severely wounded. And all it took was a single press conference in September from Fed Chair Jerome Powell to dash hopes that had been building on Wall Street all year. <h3>What happened?</h3>Interest rates soared. That's what happened.It's already been tough for investors to watch the <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/rates/U-S--Rates-10-Years" target="_blank" rel="noopener">10-year US Treasury yield</a> surge from 1.1% in January 2021 to 4.84% today — but the key bond yield has now spiked a full percentage point over the past 10 weeks alone. That's a huge move, and the relentless drive higher in interest rates has been sparked by Powell's insistence that another rate hike is likely necessary to quell inflation. Powell spoke and investors finally listened. The Fed signaled that it expects to keep its benchmark Fed Funds rate above 5% well into 2024, running counter to the investors' previous expectation of interest rate cuts as early as the first quarter of next year. The reaction in the stock and bond markets has been swift and violent. The 10-Year US Treasury yield surged to 4.84%, while the S&amp;P 500 extended its drawdown from the end of July to nearly 10%. With interest rates exceeding levels not seen since 2007, investors and consumers are growing more concerned that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/recession-outlook-economy-fed-soft-landing-central-bank-linkedin-economist-2023-10">something in the economy is about to break.</a><h3>What changed?</h3>After shrugging off rate hikes and threats of higher for longer for most of this year, the market decided that the September policy meeting was the inflection point and began to take the Fed at its word: higher rates are here to stay. Buckle up. Investors are growing increasingly concerned that the Fed's persistently hawkish monetary policy, even after inflation dropped from its 9% peak in June 2022 to 3% in July, is bound to break something in the economy.<div type="image" title="Inflation" height="744" width="1134" msid="104242768" hostid="261" sizebytes="20156"></div>We already got a taste of that when interest rates soared earlier this year, sparking massive bond losses at regional banks that led to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/silicon-valley-bank-failure-what-happened-bank-run-explained-2023-3">the implosion of Silicon Valley Bank.</a> At that time, the 10-year US Treasury yield was below 4%. Today, it's closer to 5%.So what's next to break? Bond portfolios, potentially. Investors and banks are sitting on massive losses on their bond holdings that rival a full blown stock market crash, with <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/bonds/treasury-bond-yields-market-selloff-market-crashes-dot-com-bubble-2023-10">bonds with maturities of 10 years or more down a whopping 46%,</a> on par with the dot-com bubble burst in 2000. The consumer, meanwhile, is getting <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/recession-outlook-economy-consumer-spending-down-breaking-2023-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pushed to the limit</a>.Credit card debt <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/consumer-credit-card-debt-tops-1-trillion-first-time-ever-2023-8">has surged above $1 trillion,</a> delinquency rates for auto loans and credit card loans <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/credit-card-debt-recession-warning-us-economy-outlook-wells-fargo-2023-8">are on the rise,</a> student loan payments are resuming this month for the first time in three years, and near 8% mortgage rates have made the prospect of buying a home prohibitively expensive for millennials. "Consumers are becoming more conservative with their spending as they continue to face a trifecta of headwinds including elevated inflation, higher interest rates and slowing labor market and income gains. The restart of student loan payments on Oct. 1, the near depletion of excess savings, and tight credit conditions will further weigh on consumers' ability to spend going into next year," EY's chief economist Greg Daco <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/recession-outlook-inflation-labor-market-interest-rates-consumers-economic-headwinds-2023-9">said last month. </a>Something's got to give, and it all goes back to the Fed.<h3>Goodbye, soft landing? </h3>Company CEOs, economists, and investment strategists <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-are-ceos-saying-recession-2023-economy-layoffs-hiring-freezes-2022-10">have been warning since 2022 that a recession</a> hitting the US economy is a question of when, not if. And then <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/thank-the-american-retail-consumer-for-the-soft-landing-2023-7">consumers surprised everybody.</a> As painful as inflation and higher interest rates were, the economy remained resilient as consumers held onto their jobs and kept swiping their credit cards. The latest jobs report shows employers added a stunning 336,000 jobs in September alone. Productivity gains from artificial intelligence, decelerating inflation, falling oil prices, and a weakening US dollar meant that calls for a soft landing grew <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/janet-yellen-feeling-good-us-soft-landing-economy-krugman-summers-2023-9">louder</a> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/taylor-swift-eras-tour-helped-us-economy-2023-9">and louder</a>, helping the S&amp;P 500 surge as much as 32% from its bear market low. But in just a few short weeks, it appears that the Fed has wiped out Wall Street's mirage of a soft landing with just three words: higher for longer. And there's real reason to be concerned that the economy is in a more fragile state than any single data point may suggest, and it really all goes back to this rapid rise in interest rates, which is throttling consumers and businesses alike. "We have a crisis emerging. If you're [a company] in the <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/index/s&amp;p_500" rel="">S&amp;P 500</a>, you have no trouble financing your business. You can't say that about small business anymore. The cost of capital has gone through the roof," Shark Tank's Kevin O'Leary <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bankruptcy-economy-recession-federal-reserve-war-on-inflation-interest-rates-2023-9">said last month.</a> The surging cost of capital is why <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/bonds/fed-rate-hikes-bankruptcies-zombie-companies-wall-street-investors-earnings-2023-9">bankruptcies in America are starting to pile up.</a>This week, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-economy-recession-prediction-model-2023-10">Bloomberg economists said</a> that a recession was likely to strike as early as the last months of this year and it could be officially called in the early days of 2024. <h3>What happens next?</h3>The path for the economy to stick a soft landing has narrowed. For the Goldilocks scenario to emerge, the Fed needs to look in the mirror and acknowledge all of the progress it has made taming inflation over the past two years, even as the jobs market remains strong.It has to acknowledge that interest rates are now sufficiently restrictive, and decide that it's next monetary policy move isn't an interest rate hike, but rather a pause, and then a cut. "There should be no question now that the Fed should be done. I mean, we've had almost 50 basis points of tightening on the long end since the last meeting," Wharton professor Jeremy Siegel told CNBC on Thursday, adding that uncertainties surrounding labor strikes and a potential government shutdown should push the Fed to stop hiking rates.Some Fed members are beginning to acknowledge this, with <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdKo7cPrsVY" target="_blank" rel="noopener">recent comments</a> from Fed Presidents Mary Daly and Raphael Bostic suggesting that the recent surge in interest rates is doing the Fed's job in tightening financial conditions.The future of stocks will continue to be defined by how rigorously the Fed sticks to its higher-for-longer plan, and when it starts to signal that rate cuts could be coming. Investors could be in for a lengthy wait, and the mega-cap tech corporations fueling so much of the market's prosperity will keep feeling the pressure of high rates on their future earnings. It's a potential recipe for disaster for a market already tenuously dependent on such a small group of names.If inflation continues to fall — which seems likely <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/jeremy-siegel-fed-inflation-rate-hike-outlook-recession-risk-tightening-2023-1">as lagging shelter prices used in the Fed's inflation calculation start to reflect</a> that rents have been dropping over the past year, and if the unemployment rate stays at historically low levels — then it's mission accomplished for the Fed.But if the Fed continues to push the brakes too hard on the economy, moving forward with more interest rate hikes, then investors can say goodbye to a soft landing scenario and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/recession-outlook-economy-fed-soft-landing-central-bank-linkedin-economist-2023-10">hello to a recession.</a>

Right now nuclear reactors run on fission, the energy created when atoms split apart.On the other hand, fusion — when atoms combine — is the cosmos' energy of choice and is what powers stars like our sun.Some estimates predict that fusion could <a target="_blank" href="https://www.iaea.org/newscenter/news/what-is-nuclear-fusion">produce</a> almost 4 million times as much energy as fossil fuels like coal or oil and four times as much as fission.Right now, multiple countries are working toward building the first fusion reactor to generate electricity.Japan, for example, recently completed the world's largest fusion reactor yet — the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/largest-fusion-reactor-power-on-in-japan-2023-12">JT-60SA tokamak</a>. And France is working on an even larger reactor — ITER — that, when finished, will stand nearly 100 feet tall.JT-60SA and ITER are the next generation of fusion reactors. However, they're still only meant for research purposes. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Tony Romeo believes he's discovered Amelia Earhart's long-lost aircraft.</li><li>Romeo told BI he captured an image of an aircraft-shaped object on the floor of the Pacific Ocean.</li></ul>A pilot and former US Air Force intelligence officer believes an image he captured using sonar on a high-tech unmanned submersible may have finally answered one of America's most baffling mysteries: What caused the disappearance of iconic pilot <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-did-amelia-earhart-die-2017-7">Amelia Earhart</a> at the height of her fame?Tony Romeo is one of a long line of researchers and hobbyists to have taken up the search for Earhart's distinctive Lockheed 10-E Electra plane, which disappeared over the Pacific Ocean along with its famous pilot and navigator Fred Noonan during an attempt to circumnavigate the globe in July of 1937.<div type="image" title="Amelia Earhart, 40, stands next to a Lockheed Electra 10E, before her last flight in 1937." height="1096" width="1552" msid="107198642" hostid="261"></div>The mystery surrounding Earhart's disappearance has long puzzled researchers and spurred <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amelia-earhart-conspiracy-theories-2018-5">conspiracy theories</a> over the years, from the Japanese taking her prisoner to her being a government spy.But Romeo, a former real estate investor who sold commercial properties to raise the $11 million needed to begin funding the search, returned in December from a roughly 100-day voyage at sea with a sonar image that he believes shows the lost plane in the ocean's depths.<h2>A high-tech search at sea</h2>His expedition, which was carried out using a $9 million high-tech unmanned submersible "Hugin" drone manufactured by the Norwegian company <a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/kongsberg-gets-nok-1-2-bln-order-from-lockheed-martin-1032649045">Kongsberg</a>, and a research crew of 16, started last September in Tarawa, Kiribati, covering 5,200 square miles of the ocean floor, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/science/amelia-earhart-lost-plane-found-843e9e9c">The Wall Street Journal</a> reported.It was a dream Romeo had for years before making it a reality."This has been a story that's always intrigued me, and all the things in my life kind of collided at the right moment," Romeo, whose father and brothers are also pilots, told Business Insider. The Smithsonian, the family, there'll be some investors involved because it'll be an expensive operation, but then we're thinking: 'How do we lift the plane? How do we salvage it?'"He added: "I don't think we're there yet. But I do think Americans want to see this in the Smithsonian; that's where it belongs. Not the bottom of the ocean."<h2>A decadeslong mystery</h2>Hopeful explorers have pumped millions of dollars into expeditions to find Earhart's lost plane over the years, but her last known location has made the searches difficult."It's very deep water, and the area that she could've possibly been in is huge," Tom Dettweiler, a sonar expert, told The Journal.One team who searched for Earhart's aircraft in 2009 said on X, formerly Twitter, that following its 2,500-square-mile search near Howland Island, close to where Romeo conducted his search, it was only "confident" that they knew where the aviator "isn't."Earhart, who was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic and the US, was declared legally dead on January 5, 1939, two years after she vanished. But her legacy has lived on and she continues to fascinate people worldwide."It was one of the great <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/phenomena-science-cant-explain-2019-1">mysteries of the 20th century</a> and still now into the 21st century," Cochrane told The Journal. "We're all hopeful that the mystery will be solved."<h2>The dateline theory</h2>Romeo believes he's taken a massive step toward answering vital questions surrounding the famous pilot's disappearance after scouring decades of clues and potential leads to her location, including the "dateline theory."The theory, which Romeo relied on partly to guide his search, suggests that when Earhart crossed over the international dateline during her 20-hour flight, her navigation system became inaccurate and misdirected her by about 60 miles, potentially leading to a tragic end.<div type="image" title="Amelia Earhart wears a string of leis around her neck after landing in Honolulu, Hawaii." height="2327" width="3000" msid="107198650" hostid="261"></div>Once he has confirmation that he's found Earhart's plane, hopefully during another voyage planned for later this year, Romeo says the company he has created as part of the search will continue trying to solve other mysteries held in the ocean."There's lots of cool stuff in the Pacific — WWII aircraft and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mh370-theories-dead-ends-unanswered-questions-ahead-of-major-new-report-2018-7">flight MH370</a> are still out there, and maybe we can make a run at that at some point," Romeo told BI. "I'm not announcing yet that we are, but I'd love to collaborate with other folks on other projects since we've got the state-of-the-art equipment. There's only a couple of these in the world and finding these things out is in demand."

"What holds us back from fully committing to our purpose are these metaphorical boats that tell us to retreat," Higgins told Insider. "When you leave a door open for retreat, it undermines your resolve. You need the pain of potential failure to drive you to take extraordinary acts to succeed." Scared? That's the point, according to Higgins. It's that kind of productive anxiety that drives entrepreneurs. Without risk, he said, reward is more elusive. Even flourishing founders will find ways to continuously access pools of doubt or fear that drive them forward toward the next thing. For Higgins, there was no plan B. The cofounder of RSE Ventures and investor in such brands as Momofuku, VaynerMedia, and Magnolia Bakery, he grew up poor in Queens, New York, the youngest child of a single mother with depression and other health problems.Higgins started working at age 10, then dropped out of school at 16 so he could get his GED and attend college — and start earning real money – as quickly as possible. His mother died just as his career began to take off.Early on, Higgins worked in communications for dotcom-era grocery startup Kozmo.com. He was New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani's press secretary on 9/11, and later chief operating officer of the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation. RSE Ventures was founded in 2012, and Higgins also held executive roles with the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins. <h2>Moving from side hustle to startup</h2>While his resume looks like nonstop progression, Higgins shares in the book the tradeoffs involved, such as when he decided to leave a "dream job" as an operations executive with the New York Jets.<div type="image" title="Book Jacket for Burn the Boats by Matt Higgins" height="2400" width="1608" msid="103970916" hostid="261" sizebytes="127108"></div>"I felt like I wasn't using all my skills." he wrote. "I wanted to be in a place of perpetual growth and disruption, not presiding over things that were generally fine. So I quit. Crazy, right?" That decision would lead to his connecting with real estate developer Stephen Ross, owner of the Miami Dolphins and later Higgins' cofounder of RSE Ventures. For those working a side hustle, it's tough to know when the time might be right to quit your day job. "When you are in the land of the side hustle, you're trying to identify that which would be fulfilling enough, rewarding enough, and sustaining enough to be your plan A," Higgins told Insider.If you're looking for financial guarantees from day one, however, that's the wrong goal. "If that's your framework, you'll never go all the way in," he added. The trick is to figure out what is the level of risk you can tolerate, but not eliminate it completely. Otherwise, he said, you are in danger of losing focus on the best possible outcome.<h2>Optimizing anxiety while avoiding burnout </h2>Higgins dedicates an entire chapter to optimizing anxiety, including tools for letting it spiral out of control."Anxiety is a power source," Higgins told Insider. "Like nuclear power it needs to be unleashed the same time it's contained or you have a total meltdown."Burnout is common for anyone pursuing their passion. "There's a cost to being all-in because the stakes are always very high," he said. "While it's propelling you to greatness, it does grind you down."He advises identifying the specific parts of your life that are essential to your well-being, and protecting them — but defining them narrowly so that you're not adding stress by worrying about things that ultimately don't matter. Higgins also tries to meditate every day, citing examples of other leaders from Ray Dalio to Bill Gates who swear by the practice.Mainly though, you have to learn to let go when things don't go your way. He wrote, "Do what you can, forgive yourself when you don't achieve perfection, and keep trying."
