He has remained mostly silent as to the reason behind his ban on Twitch and the company has never shared the exact reason.</p><p>The streamer, who now broadcasts on YouTube, added that he has known the reason Twitch banned his account "for months now," though he has not shared it publicly. </p><p>"There's a reason why we are suing the f--- out of them," Beahm said on stream. </p><p>In June 2020, Beahm was banned from Twitch and claimed in a YouTube video that he "did not know why" and wasn't "told anything about it." Twitch's public response wasn't much clearer, <a href="https://www.insider.com/dr-disrespect-ban-twitch-says-he-doesnt-know-why-2020-6">telling Insider</a> that "we take appropriate action when we have evidence that a streamer has acted in violation of our Community Guidelines or Terms of Service."</p><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/h_P7tm8LBY4" frameborder="0"></iframe><p>Since August 2020, Beahm has been streaming on his YouTube channel, which has 3.46 million subscribers.</p><p>On Monday's stream, Beahm said that on YouTube, he was making a "quarter" of what he made on Twitch, where he had 4.4 million followers before the ban. </p><p>"All of the big sponsors and partnerships, they have to question why you got banned," Beahm said, adding that big-name companies won't work with him because his persona is now tied to his ban from Twitch.</p><p>He also said an "eight-figure deal" was taken away from him. He appeared to be referring to a <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/general-news/dr-disrespect-signs-multi-year-deal-stay-twitch-1283878/">multi-year deal</a> for an undisclosed amount he had signed with Twitch in March 2020, which was canceled with the ban. </p><p>The "viewership is atrocious" since switching over to YouTube, Beahm added. </p><h2><strong>DrDisrespect has been a fixture of the gaming world for over a decade</strong></h2><p>Beahm uploaded his first <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3b2d7p7I2GQ">YouTube video</a> as the DrDisrespect character in January 2010, already fully formed with his signature mustache, sunglasses, and bravado. In 2011, Beahm was hired as a community manager for Sledgehammer Games, the developer of the "Call of Duty" franchise, and in 2012 he <a href="https://twitter.com/GuyBeahm/status/175298869935087617">announced on Twitter</a> that he was promoted to level designer for the games. </p><p>In 2015, Beahm announced his retirement from game design to pursue streaming full-time. Over the next three years, he became one of Twitch's most popular content creators. Throughout 2017, he averaged between 20,000 and 30,000 viewers per stream, according to data collection site <a href="https://twitchtracker.com/drdisrespect">Twitch Tracker.</a></p><p>His career has also been marked by controversies.</p><p>In December 2017, he took a two-month hiatus from streaming after announcing he had <a href="https://www.looper.com/217423/the-shady-side-of-dr-disrespect/">been unfaithful to his wife</a>, but returned in February 2018 to his highest viewer count yet, averaging 200,000 concurrent viewers per stream. According to Twitch Tracker, by February 2018, Beahm was pulling in an average of 50,000 viewers per stream and consistently topping most-viewed creator charts. </p><p>Beahm received a two-week suspension from <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dr-disrepect-issues-apology-twitch-ban-two-weeks-e3-bathrooms-2019-7">Twitch in June 2019</a> after streaming from a bathroom at the video game convention E3. <ul class="summary-list"><li>A top game streamer admitted to messaging a minor in 2017.</li><li>That's why the Amazon-owned Twitch platform mysteriously booted him in 2020, Dr Disrespect said.</li></ul><p>Exactly four years ago today, one of the biggest stars on Amazon-owned Twitch was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dr-disrespect-banned-from-twitch-report-permanent-2020-6">mysteriously booted from the video game streaming platform</a>.</p><p>The company didn't reveal much about the reason why at the time. But the mysterious circumstances surrounding the ban have now been revealed.</p><p>On Tuesday, that streamer, Guy Beahm — better known by his "Dr Disrespect" persona — shared why. He'd sent messages "that sometimes leaned too much in the direction of being inappropriate" to a minor over Twitch in 2017, <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/DrDisrespect/status/1805668256088572089">he revealed in an explosive statement on X</a>.</p><p>"Were there twitch whisper messages with an individual minor back in 2017? The answer is yes," Beahm wrote, referencing the "Whisper" direct messaging product on the platform. "Were there real intentions behind these messages, the answer is absolutely not."</p><p>The revelation sent shockwaves throughout the gaming world and led to swift repercussions as multiple companies severed ties with the content creator, known for his online streams playing "Call of Duty" and other games that draw millions of views.</p><p>Beahm moved to YouTube after his Twitch ban — though he's never announced a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/twitch-defections-to-youtube-paint-incomplete-picture-of-livestreaming-2022-7">formal streaming contract with YouTube</a>, and he's been <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/DrDisrespect/status/1521284955082412032">critical of the platform</a> <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/DrDisrespect/status/1714320986919874813">over the years</a>.</p><p>On his livestreams, the 42-year-old Beahm wears a black mullet wig, and has cultivated the brash persona of Dr Disrespect as "the most ruthless, athletic competitor in video game history," per his Instagram profile.</p><p>So why did this all come to light now?</p><p>Beahm's statement confirming his messages to a minor comes days after a former Twitch employee <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/evoli/status/1804309358106546676">said on X</a> that an unnamed streamer, widely believed to be referring to Beahm, had been "caught sexting a minor" and "trying to meet up with her at TwitchCon" — a convention hosted by the Amazon-owned platform.</p><p>In the days that followed the Twitch employee's social media post, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theverge.com/2024/6/25/24185821/dr-disrespect-twitch-ban-explanation-inappropriate-messages">The Verge</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-06-25/youtuber-dr-disrespect-was-allegedly-kicked-off-twitch-for-messaging-minor">Bloomberg</a> separately reported that Beahm had been banned from the platform for messaging a minor.</p><h2 id="03317cf2-795b-4217-9af2-91a29429bcad">'Nothing illegal happened'</h2><p>In his statement, Beahm denied being a predator or pedophile.</p><p>"Nothing illegal happened, no pictures were shared, no crimes were committed, I never even met the individual," he wrote.</p><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">THE TWITCH BAN<br /><br />Hello, I'd like to make a quick statement..<br /><br />Lets cut the fucking bullshit, as you know there's no filter with me. Influenced by the popularity of the mustached alpha bro DrDisrespect, Henning joining random Fortnite groups and preached the word of god, whether his teammates wanted to hear it or not. Dressed in a black button-up and an orange tie, his image is eye-catching if not dramatic.</p><p>Over the next five months, he amassed over 140,000 followers on the platform, who would watch him tell random teenagers and strangers not to say the lord's name in vain or that they need to repent for their sins. His TikTok grew alongside his Twitch fame, reaching over 350,000 followers in just the latter half of the year.</p><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/gVMNia0Er-E" frameborder="0"></iframe><p>In July of 2020, Hennig received his first suspension for seven days on Twitch. In a now-deleted tweet, Hennig wrote "Twitch has yet again showed they have no tolerance for a #Christian streamer who preaches what the #Bible teaches. They are a bias, hypocritical organization that shoves their agenda down everyone's throats."</p><p>After his <keyword id="10877221" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="twitch-ban">Twitch ban</keyword>, the preacher moved over to controversial platform DLIve before transitioning to <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZ4QU73e3J41NqWd4Y-5JXw">YouTube</a> where he has 14,000 subscribers. His clips would still gain the attention of critics, with YouTuber Kurtis Conner sharing a video about the DrWitnesser streams to his 2.9 million subscribers.</p><p>"My guess is he plays Fortnite to get to these kids when they are young and impressionable and scared," Conner says in the video. The increase in hours watched should be a significant boon for Twitch. But an overall downturn in ad spending due to the coronavirus could make it difficult for Twitch to capitalize on the viewership surge.</p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/all-five-major-ad-holding-companies-move-strengthen-balance-sheets-2020-3">Michael Levine, a senior analyst at Pivotal Research Group, told Business Insider</a> that he expects ad revenue budgets to be cut by 20 to 25%. The pandemic has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-rattles-media-buyers-in-the-advertising-industry-2020-3">companies rearranging their campaigns and spending for 2020</a> and viewers are turning to Twitch at a faster rate than ever.</p><p>The recent surge helped Twitch set a viewership record during the first three months of the year, surpassing 3 billion hours watched during a quarter for the first time, <a href="https://blog.streamlabs.com/streamlabs-stream-hatchet-q1-2020-live-streaming-industry-report-9630bc3e0e1e">according to Streamlabs.</a> Twitch's 23% increase in viewership in March reflects its dominance over other livestreaming platforms as well. YouTube Gaming saw a 10.7% increase in hours watched, while Microsoft's Mixer saw a 14.9% bump, and Facebook Gaming grew by just 3.8%.</p><p>But The Information reported that Twitch has, in the past, had problems courting advertisers that don't typically spend within the gaming category. <a href="https://forecasts-na2.emarketer.com/584b26021403070290f93a56/5c76cf417ddc4308487caebd">EMarketer projected that ad revenue spending</a> on gaming video content would reach $2.03 billion across all digital platforms in 2020. But advertisers will spend billions more advertising across YouTube's vast catalogue in other genres. Non-gaming advertisers are a key to Twitch's continued growth.</p><p>Though Twitch maintains its identity as a gaming platform, it has gradually taken steps to highlight its more diverse offerings. The platform's fastest growing genre is Just Chatting, where streamers host an interactive conversation with their community and react to current events, often without any video games involved.</p><p>But a gaming-focused audience can be hard to crack for an advertiser from another category.</p><p>Evan Kubes, president of the gaming and esports management firm Rumble Gaming, said that brands looking to advertise in gaming and esports should try to align themselves with specific games and streamers that reflect their product, rather than making broad campaigns that will be viewed as inauthentic.</p><p>"Unlike traditional media and traditional sponsorship, you don't have 60 years of precedent of what success may look like," Kubes added. "A lot of these brands are taking a chance on you that you're going to kind of help them achieve their goals. So on both sides it's a learning process."</p><p>On March 12, Twitch announced a new agreement with Comscore that would provide audience metrics like minutes spent and content minutes per ad to potential advertisers, a move both companies said will help prove the return on investment for future partners. Comscore said it eventually plans to provide genre-specific breakdowns for Twitch, which could provide more insight on the different types of viewers watching Twitch's most popular channels.</p><h2>Twitch creators will eventually benefit from ad revenue sharing, or by negotiating their own deals</h2><p>Partnered Twitch creators make money from ad revenue sharing - similar to YouTube - and Twitch offers each channel different rates based on audience, location, demographics, and available ad packages.</p><p>The top Twitch streamers negotiate additional promotions independent from the platform and many produce their own ads to run while live. Twitch pays streamers on a monthly basis.</p><p>But some channels choose to forgo ads completely, preferring to monetize with viewer subscriptions and bits. This can also hamper Twitch's chances to boost ad revenue. <a href="https://www.twitch.tv/suto/">Twitch partner Hallie "Suto" Atisuto</a> said she never runs ads when streaming for her 128,000 followers, and that viewer subscriptions and donations bring in more money.</p><p>"I actually don't run ads in my stream, I never have," she said. "Seems silly and a lost opportunity on making money, it's just the last thing on my mind while streaming.
