Leh, May 18 () Ladakh Lt Governor R K Mathur on Monday said his administration will ensure every support for the effective functioning of the university and colleges in the union territory. Mathur was chairing a meeting to discuss the annual Capex Budget and other related issues of the University of Ladakh at Raj Niwas here, an official spokesperson said.In February last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the University of Ladakh, the first-ever varsity in the region. The Jammu and Kashmir administration had approved the establishment of the university in 2018."Funds will not be a problem and UT Administration shall ensure every support for the effective functioning of Ladakh University and colleges in Ladakh," the Lt Governor said, exhorting on timely execution of the development projects. Dense fog and zero visibility in Delhi, Lucknow and Amritsar

Leh, Nov 23 () The COVID-19 death toll in <keyword id="9277524" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-union-territory-of-ladakh">the Union Territory of Ladakh</keyword> reached 100 as two more people died due to the infection in <keyword id="2625720" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Leh-district">Leh district</keyword>, thereby prompting the civil society to call for a self-imposed week-long shutdown here from Monday to contain the spread of the virus. A total of 73 people tested positive for coronavirus during the past 24 hours, taking the virus count in the region to 7,939, officials said on Monday. Meanwhile, the authorities assured adequate arrangements to meet the challenge posed by the spike in the cases and announced that Ladakh is expected to receive COVID-19 vaccine by February next year. Both the latest fatalities were reported from Leh on Sunday, taking the death toll in Ladakh to 100, the officials said, adding of them, 59 deaths have taken place in Leh and rest 41 in Kargil district. Out of the 73 new cases, the officials said 69 cases were detected in Leh and four in Kargil. The officials said 55 patients were discharged after successful treatment for COVID-19, raising the number of those who have recovered from the infection to 6,911, which is 87 per cent of the total cases. The active cases in the Union territory stand at 928, that is, 820 in Leh and 108 in Kargil, they said. Normal life was disrupted in Leh town on Monday following a call for week-long lockdown given by the civil society group to prevent the spread of the infection. All shops and business establishments, except medical shops, remained closed, while most of the public and private transport remained off the roads in response to the lockdown call. Allaying fears of the public, Commissioner Secretary, Health and Medical Education, Ladakh Rigzin Samphel said all necessary arrangements have been put in place to deal with the pandemic in the coming winter months. "Ladakh is expected to receive COVID-19 vaccines by the month of February next year for which 17 points in Kargil and 15 points in Leh have already been recognised for their storage. "On receiving the vaccines, the medical fraternity and senior citizens would be given preference for receiving the vaccination," he told reporters. About the civil society sponsored lockdown in Leh district, Samphel appreciated the overall cooperation and assistance of the civil society of Ladakh and termed it as an example for others to follow. He also appealed to the general public to follow and adhere to the SOPs issued by the government to contain the spread of coronavirus. The official said all arrangements have been made by the administration to keep the COVID centres winter-ready and functional in the coming months. "The district administrations of Leh and Kargil have made seven COVID care centres fully functional with adequate facilities in Kargil and five in Leh district. The administration has made a 200 bed facility in Kargil hospital and in the coming days, the ICU unit in SNM hospital in Leh will see an increased facility of 120 beds," he said. Samphel said arrangements with regards to heating and oxygen facilities along with complete stocking of medicines have already been made across the region. "Hospitals of Leh and Kargil are fully equipped with sufficient oxygen facilities. Also, an addition of 100 nurses each in Leh and Kargil hospitals will be made available," the officer said. In addition to current single-engine Heli service, the Commissioner Secretary said the administration would also use the service of Mi17 choppers for aerial support to far flung areas like Zanskar, Nubra, Changthang and Drass. He also urged the general public to help contain the spread of the virus, especially during the annual celebration of Losar, by observing the occasion at their homes and avoiding visiting relatives this festive season.

Civil authorities in Ladakh call for a week-long shutdown as COVID-19 death toll reaches 100

"The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway is closed due to accumulation of snow at many places, especially around <keyword id="924005" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jawahar-tunnel">Jawahar Tunnel</keyword>," an official of the traffic control department said. He said snow clearance operations were in full swing and efforts were on to restore movement of stranded vehicles along the 260 kilometre road. The official said nearly 4500 vehicles, mostly trucks carrying essentials to the valley, are stranded along the highway at various places. Mughal Road, which connects the valley to <keyword id="6357972" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="jammu">Jammu</keyword> division through Shopian-Rajouri axis, has been closed for several days due to heavy snowfall in the region. The officials said south Kashmir's Kulgam district received highest snowfall with two to three feet of snow accumulated at some places. Anantnag district has also received heavy snowfall between one foot and two feet, they said. The flight operations to and from Srinagar remained suspended for second consecutive day due to poor visibility, the officials said. The MET Office said moderate to heavy snowfall, with isolated very heavy snowfall, was most likely to take place, especially in south Kashmir, Gulmarg, Banihal-Ramban, Poonch, Rajouri, Kistawar and Zanskar, Drass as well as on the higher reaches of Ladakh UT, over two days from Monday. "Overall, the snowfall will continue from Sunday to Tuesday forenoon with the occasional break. This may lead to the disruption of surface and air transportation, water-logging in plains of Jammu and Srinagar cities," the MET Office said. Kashmir is currently under the grip of 'Chillai-Kalan' -- the 40-day harshest winter period when a cold wave grips the region and the temperature drops considerably leading to the freezing of water bodies including the famous Dal Lake here as well as the water supply lines in several parts of the valley. The chances of snowfall are the most frequent and maximum during this period and most areas, especially in the higher reaches, receive heavy snowfall. While 'Chillai-Kalan' - which began on December 21 -- will end on January 31, the cold wave continues even after that in Kashmir with a 20-day-long 'Chillai-Khurd' (small cold) and a 10-day-long 'Chillai-Bachha' (baby cold). Jammu-Srinagar national highway and Mughal road closed due to snowfall

Srinagar/Jammu, May 11 () The Border Roads Organisation opened the Zojila and Razdan passes on the Srinagar-Leh and Bandipora-Gurez highways, respectively for traffic this year, ahead of schedule, despite the risk of COVID-19 prevailing over the world, officials said. The 86 km-long Bandipora-Gurez road was thrown open for traffic after remaining closed for four months due to heavy snowfall at Razdan pass, which is at 11,560 feet above sea level, on April 17, over a month before it was done in previous years, they said. Similarly, the Srinagar-Zojila-Leh road was restored after four months of closure and opened in March, whereas it was reopened by April-end last year, the BRO officials said. Despite heavy snowfall over these passes last year, the officials said snow clearance operations were undertaken by Project Beacon of Border Roads Organisation (BRO) from Gagangir to Zero Point. The same was done by Project Vijayak from Drass towards Zero Point to resume traffic to Leh, earlier than scheduled. Chief Engineer, Project Beacon, Brigadier Ravi Navet said the BRO carried out the snow clearance operation on these high passes with highest degree of synchronisation and synergy of various snow-clearing equipment in the valley."Our snow clearance teams started the clearance operations one month in advance. They went through a harsh environment, including biting cold, bone chilling winds and above all the avalanches which were major threats to the lives of the jawans in these high altitude passes," Navet said. "Our jawans had a narrow escape at occasions while these avalanches struck on Zojilla pass, but even that did not deter their determination," he said."The intent was to provide early and smooth passage and ferry essentials goods to the people living in Ladakh and Gurez valley," the official said. Brigadier Navet said the BRO teams downplayed all the risks on the ground and went ahead with its mission of opening these Himalayan passes as early as possible despite the coronavirus threat and the lockdown observed in the country. He noted that the snow accumulation in these sectors is recorded at over 35 feet in many places and has an average height of 15 to 25 feet. For the first time, the BRO pressed into service high tech snow cutters in the snow clearance operation at Srinagar Airport, which has enhanced our working efficiency, they said. The chief engineer of Project Beacon said, "We cannot keep these road open throughout the winters, but we can minimise the period of road closures on these two highways through strategy, determination and modern technology. "Both these highways are considered as lifelines of Ladakh and Gurez Valley," he said."All the essential goods are ferried through these highways, providing much needed relief to the land-locked regions," Brigadier Navet added.
