While earlier this problem was present in 13 to 15 per cent of children, it has increased to 20 to 25 per cent in the last 10 years. That means if there are 50 children in a classroom, then out of them there will be 15 to 20 children who require glasses. Dr <keyword id="20858465" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rohit-saxena" source="keywords">Rohit Saxena</keyword>, professor of ophthalmology and pediatrics, <keyword id="20858467" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rp-center" source="keywords">RP Center</keyword> at AIIMS, said that in earlier times, only 3 to 4 per cent of children required spectacles but now this number has increased. "Earlier, the problem of vision defects was seen in children 10 to 12 years of age. But now, at the age of 6 to 7 years, the eyesight of children has started deteriorating and they need to wear glasses," said the doctor. Not only this, but the doctor also said that even children under 4 years of age are facing the problem of myopia, or vision defect and the reason for its increase is the continuous use of gadgets like mobile phones, tablets, etc. in children. Children keep using mobile phones and other gadgets for many hours and parents do not interrupt them, Dr Rohit said, adding that before Corona, when parents used to come to us, they used to complain about television hours and ways to solve them. "But now parents say that he uses the phone only for 2 hours, which means that there has been a change in the mentality of the parents, which is affecting the eyesight of children," he added. Dr Rohit Saxena said that if children are studying online, then parents should ask them to study on a computer or laptop only and use smart screens for entertainment. "The distance should be equal to one hand and if the distance is greater than that, then it will also be fine," he added. Professor <keyword id="20858466" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dr-saxena" source="keywords">Dr Saxena</keyword> of the RP Center said that in the last 30 years, the problem of poor eyesight in children has increased rapidly. In this regard, the countries of East Asia are at the forefront. This includes countries like China, Singapore, and Hong Kong. "In the countries of East Asia, 80 to 90 per cent of children suffer from visual impairment. Not only this, if we talk about <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword>, this problem is continuously increasing among children in India," said the doctor. "Especially earlier, we used to think that the problem of visual impairment was less common in children in rural areas, but now the figures coming out show that even in rural areas, the problem of visual impairment is seen in small children. This means that even in those areas, the use of mobile phones and other gadgets has increased among children," he said. Dr Rohit said that in the data collected from rural areas in the last 10 years, earlier, 3 to 4 per cent of children had the problem of visual impairment, which has now increased to 7 to 8 per cent. The doctor said that it is very important to increase digitalization, which is a good thing. People are becoming aware of this, even in rural areas. Along with this, excessive use of mobile phones, tablets and other gadgets is harmful to children. "Parents need to be made aware of this and will have to explain this to their children since young minds are not aware of the potential damage," he stated. In such a situation, there are some symptoms. If the symptoms are visible in your child, then pay attention to them. For example, if the child is not able to copy the homework from the board in the class, if the child is copying homework from the other child's notebook, or if the child is watching the board with eyes slightly closed. Additionally, if the child is watching TV very closely, reading books very closely or has watery eyes and is used to constant rubbing of their eyes, these are all symptoms of a vision defect or myopia. Regarding this, parents should immediately take their children to the doctor and get their eyes checked. Along with this, if children use the phone continuously or have to do homework online, then parents should keep in mind that they must take a 5-minute break every half hour and always keep their computer or laptop near the window so that their children keep looking outside while studying. Along with this, if possible, study in the open on the balcony or terrace. Children need to go out 2 hours during the day in the morning or anytime before evening. (ANI)

But when ad film-maker <keyword id="1612592" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vinil-Mathew">Vinil Mathew</keyword>’s directorial debut <keyword id="1520199" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Hasee-Toh-Phasee">Hasee Toh Phasee</keyword> hit the screen a week before <keyword id="4167782" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="V-day">V-Day</keyword> (February 7), it turned out to be a better love feast than the run-of-the-mill romances. Much of the credit goes to the lead duo – <keyword id="562349" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Parineeti-Chopra">Parineeti Chopra</keyword> and <keyword id="1320874" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sidharth-Malhotra">Sidharth Malhotra</keyword> – and the <keyword id="303" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Director">director</keyword>, of course, who tweaked all the usual Bollywood masala into an earthy and sharp reality without stripping the flick of its dream elements. And going by the <keyword id="2034852" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Box-office-numbers">box office numbers</keyword>, we dare say that the audience loves those experiments garbed in the feel-good raiment. In other words, this Parineeti-Sidharth starrer has different offerings at different levels – whether you take it as an arty-commercial experiment or just another love story, with some nuances that can push you out of your comfort zone. 
 So how has the film fared at the box office so far? The Rs 25 crore <keyword id="1636016" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="rom-com">rom-com</keyword>, jointly produced by <keyword id="3778" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Karan-Johar">Karan Johar</keyword>’s <keyword id="62161" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dharma-Productions">Dharma Productions</keyword> and <keyword id="7929" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Anurag-Kashyap">Anurag Kashyap</keyword>’s <keyword id="1352720" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Phantom-Productions">Phantom Productions</keyword>, hit about 2,000 screens across the country and grossed around Rs 17-18 crore at home during the first weekend, according to industry estimates. <keyword id="1861689" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="overseas-collection">Overseas collection</keyword>s stood at a little over $1 million. The <keyword id="2014761" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Occupancy-rate">occupancy rate</keyword> was 50-80% during the opening weekend and stayed at 50% on the crucial Day 4 (February 10) in the domestic market, bringing in around Rs 6 crore. Overseas collection on the 4th day was around Rs 1.5 crore. However, the movie is expected to do much better at the box office during the <keyword id="2054858" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="V-Day-week">V-Day week</keyword>. 
 
Karan Johar is also happy with the way things are going. “Thank you for the immense love and appreciation for Hasee Toh Phasee, a film I am extremely proud of,” he tweeted on Sunday. 
 
The rom-com is expected to ride on critical acclaim and we feel that is justified to some extent. For one, director Vinil Mathew (best known for his Cadbury: Kuch meetha ho jaye commercials) knows how to tell a good story, blending reality with cinematic magic. And writer <keyword id="1989065" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Harshvardhan-Kulkarni">Harshvardhan Kulkarni</keyword> has aptly supported him. The film is essentially a quirky love story between <keyword id="19563" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="meeta">Meeta</keyword> (Parineeti) and Nikhil (Sidharth) – a modern-day take about life, love and relationships. Consequently, you see a runaway professional and a turbulent soul in Meeta, who has brains but takes drugs, steals money from her family and tries to whisk off her sister <keyword id="5405" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Karishma">Karishma</keyword>’s (<keyword id="16234" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Adah-Sharma">Adah Sharma</keyword>) fiancé who is also a long-time friend of Meeta. Sidharth, on the other hand, is a more staid character with his commitments firmly in place. The resulting story weaves the chemistry between the odd pair while <keyword id="6362839" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Manoj-Joshi">Manoj Joshi</keyword> does some good work as Meeta and Karishma’s father. 
 
But one still wonders why all the soul-searching and putting life into order need to happen immediately before a crucial marriage, à la Mere Brother Ki Dulhan? Only this time, we have a runaway bridegroom, instead of the bride walking away from the mandap as is the Bollywood wont. But Parineeti is the real star cast here – bright, gorgeous, self-willed and passionate – and wins hearts in spite of her over-the-top acting. Sidharth, too, is out on a self-quest and looks laudable. But it’s the cliché plot that mars the good efforts. There are nice elements, but they come in bits and pieces, and finally, Hasee Toh Phasee remains a commercial candyfloss. 
 
One just wonders what would have happened if Parineeti and Sidharth went through the same experiences post the marriage between Adah and Sidharth. But that might have been too much off the track for Bollywood and the Indian audience who did not receive the offbeat theme of Nishabd well. Let us see if Hasee Toh Phasee can join the 100 crore club. 
 
 
 
<keyword id="805778" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Heartless">Heartless</keyword>: Commendable efforts lose steam, again Medical thrillers are pretty rare in Bollywood and we pinned our hopes on <keyword id="17186" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shekhar-Suman">Shekhar Suman</keyword>’s directorial debut Heartless, starring his son <keyword id="20393" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Adhyayan">Adhyayan</keyword>, along with <keyword id="20398" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="deepti-naval">Deepti Naval</keyword>, <keyword id="6381489" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Om-puri">Om Puri</keyword> and newcomer <keyword id="1935232" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ariana-Ayam">Ariana Ayam</keyword> (she hails from New York). The movie also released on February 7 and hit about 800 screens all over the country. But unlike Hasee Toh Phasee, this one had a poor start in spite of a great storyline – essentially borrowed from the American crime/supernatural/conspiracy thriller <keyword id="106100" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="Awake">Awake</keyword>. Surprisingly, the box office numbers are not officially available yet but according to one estimate, Heartless has grossed a little over Rs 1 crore in the opening weekend. That is, indeed, shocking. 
 A close look at the movie, however, confirms our fear that it could be a box office flop. Rich boy <keyword id="138003" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Aditya-Singh">Aditya Singh</keyword> (<keyword id="6354939" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Adhyayan-Suman">Adhyayan Suman</keyword>), who needs a <keyword id="6397601" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="heart-transplant">heart transplant</keyword>, falls in love with fortune-hunter <keyword id="80068" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ria">Ria</keyword> (Ariana Ayam) and secretly marries her before the surgery. But once he is under the knife, all hell breaks loose. There is conspiracy going on to kill him with a <keyword id="2054863" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Poisoned-transplant">poisoned transplant</keyword>, so that the wife can pocket the insurance money. Adhyayan’s friend and <keyword id="6382875" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="surgeon">surgeon</keyword> <keyword id="2054864" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dr-Sameer-Saxena">Dr Sameer Saxena</keyword> (Shekhar Suman) is also in cahoots. 
 During the surgery, the truth dawns upon the hero as he goes into <keyword id="2054865" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Anaesthesia-awareness">anaesthesia awareness</keyword>, a medical condition where the patient is conscious enough to understand everything, but cannot move. Finally, his mother <keyword id="489622" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gayatri-Singh">Gayatri Singh</keyword> (Deepti Naval) commits suicide to make the transplant happen; Om Puri, as <keyword id="2054866" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dr-Sanjay-Trehan">Dr Sanjay Trehan</keyword>, manages to save him and all the baddies are arrested at the end. There’s nothing wrong with the story except for the fact that medical thrill becomes hilarious comedy during the second half and Adhyayan still looks pretty stiff although the mother-son relation has been played out well. Maybe the BO numbers will pick up as soon as the audience gets used to the comical activities that take place in the OT. But can it still be touted as Adhyayan’s comeback movie? 
 
<keyword id="1977299" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Babloo-Happy-Hai">Babloo Happy Hai</keyword>, <keyword id="828628" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ya-Rab">Ya Rab</keyword> fail to make the cut The other two releases of the week also failed to make the cut at the box office in spite of some serious themes. Directed by <keyword id="475774" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nila-Madhab-Panda">Nila Madhab Panda</keyword> (of Jalpari and I am Kalam fame), Babloo Happy Hai has a meaningful message about <keyword id="19472" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="aids">AIDS</keyword> and how people can still live a full life. But the movie has a <keyword id="110559" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Limited-release">limited release</keyword> and hit only about 350-plus screens. It has grossed a little over Rs 15 lakh on the opening day, according to TalkingMoviez.com. 
 
Hasnain Hyderabadwala-directed Ya Rab depicts the eternal conflict between <keyword id="70629" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Humanity">humanity</keyword> and <keyword id="2054867" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Parochial-attitude">parochial attitude</keyword>, and how <keyword id="1013184" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="religious-fundamentalism">religious fundamentalism</keyword> can lead to <keyword id="6358165" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="terrorism">terrorism</keyword>. But once again, lack of promotion has failed to create buzz for this movie, co-produced by <keyword id="6370367" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Mahesh-Bhatt">Mahesh Bhatt</keyword>. Made on a budget of Rs 2.5 crore, the movie has been released in 300-plus theatres and the Friday collections stood in the range of Rs 20 lakh-plus. Overall, <keyword id="434916" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood-box-office">Bollywood box office</keyword> hasn’t witnessed too many ripples even now but movie-goers are having a gala time, sampling different genres. That’s definitely a big plus and we are waiting for more.

Dr. Poonam Khetrapal Singh is currently the Regional Director for South-East Asia Region, WHO. Prior to this, she has worked as deputy regional director for the South-East Asia Region for 14 years, from 2000 to 2013. An Indian national, Dr. Singh’s key focus area is to address the ever-persistent and emerging epidemiological and demographic challenges in the region, and also push the agenda for universal health coverage and robust health systems. In this role, she is able to well articulate a strong regional voice in the health agenda at the global platform. 
 
In the early days of her career, Dr. Singh worked as civil servant in India for more than two decades, before moving to to the Health, Population and Nutrition Department of The World Bank in 1987. It was in the year 1998, when she joined WHO headquarters as executive director for Sustainable Development and Healthy Environment division.

Dr. Shekhar Saxena is at present the Director, World Health Organisation, Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse. A psychiatrist with an experience of over three decades, Dr. Saxena has his expertise in the field of research and program management, service delivery and information systems in the areas of mental health. Low and middle income countries has been the key centre of his work in this field. At present, his key responsibilities at WHO involves focusing on implementation of the WHO Comprehensive Mental Health Action Plan 2013-2020. This includes pushing the agenda for mental health, neurological and substance use disorders and scaling up care for the same. Dr. Saxena also had the honor of being of the writers of the World Health Report 2001 on mental health.

Dr. Sumana Barua who is serving the WHO at present as the Team Leader of the Global Leprosy Programme, began his association with the organization way back in 1996 as a Temporary Advisor. Back then, Dr. Barua evaluated the National Leprosy Elimination Programmes of Indonesia and Myanmar. He did another short-term assignment as a consultant with WHO in 2001 for Cambodia and Vietnam region From 2002 to 2007, he worked as Medical Officer and Regional Focus Person for WHO’s Western Pacific Region Leprosy Elimination Programme. In this role for over 5 years, Dr Barua was responsible for about 37 countries and regions. 
 
He went to the University of Tokyo to earn do masters in Masters in Public Health and PhD in International Health Policy and Planning from the University of Tokyo. Earlier in the year 1989, he obtained a Doctor in Medicine from the University of the Philippines. 
 
Barua is known for introducing innovative approaches that led to simplified detection of leprosy cases particularly in remote areas. Another approach he is promoting is the involvement of persons affected by leprosy in policy-making and implementation to improve national leprosy services. His two unique approaches have helped detect many cases of leprosy, which were otherwise had-to-find and could have gone unnoticed.

Education start-ups in India seem to be the hottest targets right now, going by the kind of <keyword id="6357455" type="EVENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Funding">funding</keyword> they are attracting from local and global investors. While the government has tightened its noose around one revenue stream of livestock farmers in Rajasthan - yes, we mean the all too famous <a href="https://www.news18.com/news/india/states-where-cow-slaughter-is-banned-so-far-and-states-where-it-isnt-1413425.html">ban</a> on cow slaughter - the unrelenting farmers have found a new way to milk the humble cow. According to a report in the <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/jaipur/cow-urine-new-revenue-stream-for-dairy-farmers/articleshow/65111454.cms">Times of India</a>, farmers in Rajasthan are beefing up their revenues by almost 30% by selling cow urine. However, ensuring that cow urine is collected without spillage is no mean feat. Kailesh Gujjar, a farmer from Jaipur told TOI that he has to stay up all night to keep a watch on the cows and to collect the urine when the animal starts to tinkle. While some of the ‘liquid gold’ sold is used for holy rituals and scientifically-backed purposes like plant pesticides in organic farming, they are also sold for not-so-scientific reasons like curing ailments and diseases like cancer, a theory that has been rubbished by many oncologists and researchers. In July 2018, the TOI <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/cow-urine-can-cure-cancer-gujarat-team/articleshow/64833781.cms">reported</a> biotechnology scientists in <keyword id="6354766" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gujarat">Gujarat</keyword>’s Junagadh Agriculture University claiming that they had successfully managed to kill cancer cells using cow urine and that too in their first attempt. This claim ignited a heated debate on whether cow urine can actually cure cancer. Senior oncologist Dr Anitha Ramesh told the <a href="https://www.deccanchronicle.com/lifestyle/health-and-wellbeing/100718/can-cow-urine-treat-cancer.html">Deccan Chronicle</a> that the theory of cow urine curing cancer is “based on weak or no scientific data”. In fact, Dr Ramesh stressed on the fact that urine has toxins that can be harmful. This opinion was <a href="https://www.news18.com/news/buzz/can-cow-urine-really-cure-cancer-this-is-what-oncologists-told-us-1799607.html">echoed</a> by Venkatraman Radhakrishnan, Associate Professor Medical and Pediatric Oncology, who responded to a question on Quora on whether <keyword id="3316084" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="gaumutra">gaumutra</keyword> (cow urine) can cure or at least prevent cancer with a sharp “No”. He also added that “My fellow oncologists and I are yet to see a patient who exclusively consumed cow urine to be cured of cancer.” However, there were other doctors who believed that there may be some truth to the theory. And that’s not all, Dr Prakash Chandra Saxena, principal and superintendent of Government Ayurveda College and Hospital in Pilibhit, Uttar Pradesh told the <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/bareilly/well-promote-cow-urine-as-a-health-giving-drink-say-doctors-at-up-govts-ayurvedic-pharmacy/articleshow/62795369.cms">Times of India</a> that he recommends cow urine as a health drink to boost immunity. Cattle farmers in Rajasthan cashing in on the rising demand for cow urine

Indian pharma major <keyword id="6357157" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cipla">Cipla</keyword> has won a R2 billion (South African currency, ZAR) contract from the South African government’s National ARV tender. The company was awarded the contract through its South African subsidiary, <keyword id="415177" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cipla-Medpro">Cipla Medpro</keyword>. The contract will be effective from the April 1, 2015 for a period of three years. 
	 This would be the third such contract that has been awarded to Cipla Medpro this year by . Cipla is known as a pioneer of fixed dose combinations following Cipla’s Dr Yusuf Hamied’s accomplishment of making <keyword id="19472" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="aids">Aids</keyword> medication available or a dollar a day in 2001,” said Paul Miller, CEO of Cipla Medpro. The contract is for producing medicines to fight <keyword id="6363554" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="HIV">HIV</keyword> and AIDS. 
	 
	“We intend to continue this proud tradition and build on the foundation laid to continue our quest of providing affordable healthcare to all,” added Miller. 
	 
	The company will produce the drug at its Cipla Medpro Manufacturing (CMM), which is based in Kwazulu-Natal. Currently, the company is into producing fixed dose combinations (FDCs) drugs. 
	 
	“We are extremely proud to have won this tender which is not only testament to our high quality product portfolio, but is also in line with Cipla’s ethos of advancing healthcare for all South Africans. We look forward to continuing this partnership with government - united in the fight against Aids,” stated Subhanu Saxena, managing director and global CEO of Cipla Limited.

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Shutterstock/Lenscap</div></div></div><ul><li>The World Health Organization has added "gaming disorder" to the list of mental health conditions in its next update of the International Classification of Diseases, its standardized list of diseases and other medical conditions.</li><li>Playing too many video games could become problematic if the behavior causes a person's relationships or performance at school or work to suffer, according to the definition.</li><li>Although games can potentially become too compelling for some people, they also have some psychological benefits.</li></ul> The World Health Organization has added "gaming disorder" to the list of mental health conditions.The addition will appear in the new version the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), the WHO's standardized list of diseases and other medical conditions used by countries around the world, which <a href="http://www.who.int/classifications/icd/en/">was released on Monday</a>.The addition is meant to help clinical professionals define the point at which a pastime or hobby of playing video games becomes problematic. That could also help individuals who feel they are struggling with gaming get treatment.The ICD now <a href="https://icd.who.int/browse11/l-m/en#/http%3a%2f%2fid.who.int%2ficd%2fentity%2f1448597234">lists gaming </a>behavior as disordered if it meets three conditions: if a person loses control over their gaming habits, if they start to prioritize gaming over many other life interests or daily activities, and if they continue playing despite clear negative consequences. This pattern should be clear for a one-year period before a diagnosis is made, according to the definition.This adds gaming to a list of behaviors that can become problematic if people lose control over them, including gambling and disorders related to the use of substances like alcohol, marijuana, caffeine, or nicotine.However, defining behaviors like gaming as addictive or as mental health conditions is still controversial. It includes playing a quick puzzle game on your iPhone while riding the subway, meeting up with friends to play "Minecraft," and sitting down at a custom-built PC for a multi-hour "Destiny 2" raid session.The WHO's definition is not meant to imply that any one sort of gaming is addictive or to say that a specific amount of it leads to a disorder. Playing video games only would qualify as a mental health condition if the behavior is severe enough to result in "marked distress or significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational or occupational functioning," <a href="http://www.who.int/substance_abuse/activities/gaming_disorders/en/">according to the WHO</a>.In other words, it has to be harming personal relationships or interfering with school or work."Gaming disorders are uncommon, but still very important," Dr. Shekhar Saxena, director of the WHO's department for mental health and substance abuse, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cb6hsq-IHfA">said in a YouTube video</a> discussing changes made to the ICD. So far, the American Psychiatric Association has declined to classify gaming addiction as a disorder but has said it <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/here-there-and-everywhere/201407/internet-gaming-disorder-in-dsm-5">merits further research</a>.Before the WHO's decision, the Society for Media Psychology and Technology Division of the American Psychology Association <a href="https://www.scribd.com/document/374879861/APA-Media-Psychology-and-Technology-Division-Div-46-Policy-Statement-Expressing-Concern-Regarding-the-Plan-to-Include-Gaming-Disorder-in-the-ICD-1">released a statement</a> expressing concern about the idea of "gaming disorder," due to insufficient research on the topic:"[R]esearch has not provided clarity on how to define video game addiction (VGA), what symptoms best diagnose it, how prevalent it is, or whether it truly exists as an independent disorder, or, when it occurs is merely symptomatic of other, underlying mental health diagnoses."Part of the problem is how to distinguish between simply spending a lot of time playing games and actual addictive behavior.Scientists need to "establish a clear-cut distinction between someone who may use games excessively but non-problematically and someone who is experiencing significant impairment in their daily lives as a consequence of their excessive gaming," a group of researchers from Nottingham Trent University in the UK wrote in a <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5520128/">paper published last summer</a> in the Journal of Addictive Behavior.There are plenty of stories about individuals whose gaming behavior has become problematic - people <a href="https://kotaku.com/5384643/i-kept-playing--the-costs-of-my-gaming-addiction">have gotten </a>so caught up <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/games/2018/jun/18/truth-gaming-addiction-world-health-organization-disorder-games">in online games</a> that they've ruined relationships and lost jobs. Games are often designed to compel people to keep playing and in some cases, to keep spending money. <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/theobserver/2010/mar/21/tom-bissell-video-game-cocaine-addiction">Compulsive gaming and problematic substance use</a> can also go hand in hand.But problematic gaming may also serve as a dysfunctional coping mechanism for some, according to the Nottingham Trent researchers. Technologies that we think of as built for gaming, like virtual reality, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-virtual-reality-is-used-for-ptsd-and-anxiety-therapy-2016-1">can also be used in psychological therapy</a>.Yet people can struggle to find a healthy balance with gaming.Researchers are still trying to understand the activity's risks and effects, since it has only recently become such a common pastime - 63% of <a href="https://www.polygon.com/2016/4/29/11539102/gaming-stats-2016-esa-essential-facts">US households contain</a> at least one "frequent gamer," a trait that didn't exist a couple of generations ago.The WHO creates the ICD list so that every country can use a standardized system for classifying diseases. That allows for a unified way of identifying illnesses and keeping track of how common certain diagnoses are.But it'll take some time before the ICD actually gets implemented by countries around the world. Each health care system decides when to start using the updated list, which requires changing various forms of medical record-keeping. The US didn't adopt the last version of the ICD until 2015, despite it being finished in 1992 and first adopted by some members in 1994.
