Boston [US], October 6 (ANI): We receive constant environmental input through our five senses. Combining information from two or more senses, such as between odours and the smoothness of textures, pitch, colour, and musical dimensions, is one way our brain makes sense of this flood of information. As a result of this sensory integration, we also link certain colours to the flavours of specific meals, such as the flavour of oranges with the colour of the same name, and greater temperatures with warmer colours, lower sound pitches with less elevated places, and so on. Now, a study published in Frontiers in Psychology has experimentally demonstrated that such unintentional links with our <keyword id="144606" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sense-of-smell" source="Orion">sense of smell</keyword> might influence how we perceive colours. "Here we show that the presence of different odors influences how humans perceive color," said lead author <keyword id="19040179" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="dr-ryan-ward" source="Orion">Dr Ryan Ward</keyword>, a senior lecturer at <keyword id="471824" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="liverpool-john-moores-university" source="Orion">Liverpool John Moores University</keyword> in <keyword id="6355589" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="liverpool" source="Orion">Liverpool</keyword>, UK. Ward and colleagues tested for the existence and strength of odor-color associations in 24 adult women and men between 20 and 57 years of age. The participants were seated in front of a screen in a room devoid of unwanted sensory stimuli for the duration of the experiments. They wore no deodorants or perfumes, and none reported being color-blind or having an impaired sense of smell. All ambient odors in the isolation room were purged with an air purifier for four minutes. Then one of six odors (chosen at random from caramel, cherry, coffee, lemon, and peppermint, plus odorless water as a control) was broadcast into the room with an ultrasonic diffuser for five minutes. "In a previous study, we had shown that the odor of caramel commonly constitutes a crossmodal association with dark brown and yellow, just like coffee with dark brown and red, cherry with pink, red, and purple, peppermint with green and blue, and lemon with yellow, green, and pink," explained Ward. Participants were presented with a screen that showed them a square filled with a random color (from an infinite range) and were invited to manually adjust two sliders - one for yellow to blue, and another for green to red - to change its color to neutral grey. After the final choice had been recorded, the procedure was repeated, until all odors had been presented five times. The results showed that participants had a weak but significant tendency to adjust one or both of the sliders too far away from neutral grey. For example, when presented with the odor of coffee, they wrongly perceived 'grey' to be more of a red-brown color than true neutral grey. Likewise, when presented with the odor of caramel, they wrongly perceived a color enriched in blue as grey. The presence of the smell thus distorted the participants' color perception in a predictable manner. An exception was when the odor of peppermint was presented: here, the participants' choice of hue was different from the typical crossmodal association demonstrated for the other odors. As expected, the participants' selection likewise corresponded to true grey when presented with the neutral scent of water. "These results show that the perception of grey tended towards their anticipated crossmodal correspondences for four out of five scents, namely lemon, caramel, cherry, and coffee," said Ward. "This 'overcompensation' suggests that the role of crossmodal associations in processing sensory input is strong enough to influence how we perceive information from different senses, here between odors and colors." As the pandemic spread, Cole's dermopathology lab expanded from analyzing skin samples to also processing COVID-19 tests.Data from those tests - which is not public - "gives him a very unique view on broad public health," Cole Diagnostics spokesperson Kelli Cole told Insider.Insider spoke to one of the leading voices in opposition to Cole's appointment, Dr David Pate. China on Thursday reported 254 new deaths and a spike in virus cases of 15,152, after the hardest-hit province of Hubei applied a new classification system that broadens the scope of diagnoses for the outbreak, which has spread to more than 20 countries. (Chinatopix Via AP)This issue went hand-in-glove with the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-healthcare-system-coronavirus-outbreak-2020-1">Chinese government's failure to report cases right away</a> because CNN found the <a href="http://wjw.wuhan.gov.cn/front/web/showDetail/2020011109035">Wuhan Municipal Health Commission</a> saying on January 11 that "as of now, no infection among medical staff has been found," adding that there was "no clear evidence for human-to-human transmission."The fact that medical workers were among the patients was only revealed on January 20 when Zhong Nanshan, a government-appointed respiratory expert, said on CCTV on January 20 that the coronavirus could be transmitted between people, CNN reported. This dovetailed with the <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(20)30183-5/fulltext">Lancet</a> saying that the first patient likely began showing symptoms on December 1 - a full month before Chinese officials reported the illness to the WHO.AP PhotoLi Wenliang, the doctor who who got in trouble with authorities in the communist country for sounding an early warning about the coronavirus outbreak died Friday, February 7, 2020, after coming down with the illness.If anything, the government is accused of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-information-crackdown-on-wuhan-coronavirus-2020-1">cracking down</a> on the flow of information about the coronavirus. <a href="https://www.poynter.org/fact-checking/2020/the-2019-coronavirus-virus-lands-in-the-u-s-after-killing-17-and-taking-eight-to-prison/">Poynter</a> said citizens accused of spreading rumors were arrested, and <a href="http://news.tvb.com/local/5e1d7dc434b0315b57158f6a/%E6%9C%AC%E6%B8%AF%E5%A4%9A%E5%90%8D%E8%A8%98%E8%80%85%E6%AD%A6%E6%BC%A2%E9%86%AB%E9%99%A2%E6%8E%A1%E8%A8%AA%E6%99%82%E8%A2%AB%E6%89%A3%E6%9F%A5-%E8%A6%81%E6%B1%82%E5%88%AA%E9%99%A4%E6%8B%8D%E6%94%9D%E7%B4%A0%E6%9D%90">TVB</a>, a Hong Kong news outlet, said journalists, including one of its own, had been detained while trying to cover the outbreak. This censoring triggered outrage when a whistleblower doctor, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wuhan-coronavirus-whistleblower-doctor-li-wenliang-death-anger-china-2020-2">Li Wenliang</a>, died of the coronavirus on February 7. He was silenced by police - and forced to sign a letter admitting to "making false comments" - for sounding the alarm to his medical school peers on December 30 about a respiratory illness that presented like severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and had led to multiple people being quarantined at the Wuhan Central Hospital. <h2>Nearly half a million people have come in contact with infected patients</h2>As of Friday, the National Health Commission website doesn't mention the infected healthcare workers - that information was revealed by the State Council at a briefing on medical workers's safety, CNN said - but officials have disclosed a much higher number of possible cases than previously reported."So far, 493,067 people have been identified as having had close contact with infected patients. 177,984 are now under medical observation," the <a href="http://en.nhc.gov.cn/2020-02/14/c_76552.htm">website</a> reads.The memory of SARS haunts China and with good reason. By May 2003, 966 medical workers made up 18% of China's 5,328 cases, its <a href="http://people.com.cn/GB/shehui/212/10548/10558/20030530/1004565.html">ministry</a> said, CNN reported. For now at least, that percentage is much lower vis a vis the coronavirus with 1,716 sickened healthcare staff accounting for about 3% of confirmed cases.Addressing that point on Friday, Dr. Mike Ryan, executive director of the WHO Health Emergencies Programme, said, "We've always known that healthcare workers are on the front line." As chronicled by PageFair's head of ecosystem Dr Johnny Ryan in a report for the International News Media Association entitled "What To Do About Ad blocking," a smattering of publishers have released early results.<ul><li><a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/lewisdvorkin/2016/02/10/inside-forbes-more-numbers-on-our-ad-blocking-plan-and-whats-coming-next/#6709f42e59dd">Forbes said</a> its experiment led to 42.3% of those asked either disabling their ad blockers or white-listing Forbes.com.</li><li>City AM said <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/media-network/2015/dec/09/city-am-readers-ad-blocking-trial-results">more than a quarter</a> of readers turned off their ad blockers in its trial</li><li>GQ (which is asking for users to either turn off their ad blocker or pay a micro-payment of between $0.25 and $0.50) had a 30% take-up rate, according to the report.</li><li><a href="http://adexchanger.com/publishers/how-four-publishers-are-messaging-ad-blocking-users/">IDG Communications said</a> 37% of its B2B audience and 38% of its B2C audience white-listed the publisher once asked.</li></ul><h2>However, early success stories might not signal a long-term antidote</h2>PageFair, which helps publishers measure their ad blocking traffic and find ways to monetize that audience, said a test across its own clients' websites of such ad block appeal walls yielded "poor results."It ran 576 appeal campaigns across 220 publishers' sites and found only 0.33% of ad blocker users added an ad block exception for the publisher. Of those users, one-third only made temporary exceptions. Just 0.22% permanently whitelisted the publisher.City AM serves ad blocker users with this message and blurs out all but the first two paragraphs of its articles:<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><a href="http://www.cityam.com/234815/oil-production-freeze-iran-rebuffs-opec-petition-for-a-cut-output">City AM</a></div></div></div>There are also signs that the ad block walls aren't working from a technical perspective.PageFair's internal tests of other websites conducted in January 2016 found The Washington Post and GQ's walls were not functioning at all and users can fully browse both sites.Forbes' wall, meanwhile, is "porous" - it can be overcome by simply restarting the ad blocker once the initial wall is passed. Forbes did say earlier this month, however, <a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/lewisdvorkin/2016/02/10/inside-forbes-more-numbers-on-our-ad-blocking-plan-and-whats-coming-next/#6709f42e59dd">that it plans to rectify this</a>.The wall on Bild (owned by Axel Springer, which is also Business Insider's parent company) "is displaying its landing page consistently" - sometimes the appeal displays perfectly, whereas one of PageFair's testers found it to be broken and failing to load.PageFair's Ryan says there are other important caveats for publishers to consider too:Ad blockers have been known to develop the technology to bypass ad block walls in the past. TV companies have been trialing ad block walls for years to prevent ad blocker users getting a free pass for their lucrative video content.Blocking access is risky. News content in particular is commoditized. If a publisher prevents an ad blocker user viewing an article, they can just simply bounce away and find the story elsewhere - and never return.Ad blockers are valuable users. Ryan thinks they should be treated as a "high-value segment" by publishers.We asked Ryan to explain why he thinks waving goodbye to users is like "looking a gift-horse in the mouth."He believes many users are downloading ad blockers in order to switch off tracking. Ryan says publishers should revert back to a more offline-style of <keyword id="35666" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="advertising">advertising</keyword> - showing "above-the-line"-type ads that don't track the user, more like magazine ads, which he says are more effective than digital ads. Publishers could still have a relationship with their audiences (presumably through user registrations) and sell based on their audiences (just like TV, magazine, and radio companies do) but the advertiser and ad tech industry "should take whatever crumbs that are left available for them and be bloody happy."He concluded:Should one defend themselves and wave goodbye to these wonderful ad blocking people who are breaking down the status quo that has really damaged the business? Should I, as a publisher, wave bye-bye to them? Or should I start to explore how to show them a pure form of ad that does not rely on tracking them to within an inch of their lives?If I could do that, I think that would be much better for a brand. I could sell a smaller number of ads that didn't need to shout over each other and each ad would be worth more. And I think users would thank publishers for not having ads thrown at them or for being thrown out the website.Saying no to people who block is looking a gift horse in the mouth.
