In view of the increase in C-section deliveries in government hospitals, Karnataka Health and Medical Education minister <keyword id="6618576" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="dr-k-sudhakar" source="Orion">Dr K Sudhakar</keyword> said that a committee will be formed to monitor and check unnecessary C-section deliveries in the district and taluk government hospitals in <keyword id="48535" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="tumkur" source="Orion">Tumkur</keyword>. The Minister said this while interacting with patients in the Tumkur hospital on Wednesday. "C-section deliveries should generally remain within 20-40 per cent of the total deliveries. The C-section should not be recommended in cases where normal delivery is feasible. If this is being deliberately done we will take strict action to stop this. District surgeons should have a weekly meeting with all department heads every Friday to address issues in the hospitals. DC is also being directed to regularly visit the district hospital," the Health Minister added. "44 specialist doctors are the sanctioned strength for Tumkur district hospital out of which 42 specialists are already on board. So there is no shortage of doctors here. There were 250 beds earlier which has been increased to 400 in 2003. However, manpower is not panned accordingly and we will fix this soon," he added. The Karnataka Minister said that the Namma Clinics would be operational by this month. "438 Namma Clinics are being established in the state and 288 of them are ready. CM <keyword id="233883" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bommai" source="Orion">Bommai</keyword> will dedicate the Namma Clinics to the public this month and Tumkur will get 10 Namma Clinics. The women's clinics will be named 'Ayushmati Clinic," he said. Four staff will work round the clock in this help desk in shifts to assist patients and their families. The tender process has been initiated for dialysis service and the new service provider will be finalised by December. Dialysis capacity will be increased by the present 30,000 to 60,000." Further highlighting the upcoming projects in the health sector, Sudhakar said, "Cancer hospital has been sanctioned to Tumkur. Today I inspected the progress of construction work and it is expected to be completed by March. A 100-bed trauma care centre at a cost of Rs.40 crore is also sanctioned for Tumkur and construction will begin soon. A nursing college will also be established on the premises of the district hospital at the cost of Rs.20 crores. There are about 28 lakh people in Tumkur and our govt is committed to providing quality healthcare services to all. There are about 144 PHCs in the district and almost all sanctioned posts have been filled. Eight additional specialist doctors are being recruited and we will also fill the vacant staff nurse, lab technician and D group workers." "The amount will be kept as a fixed deposit which can be used for her future after the girl attains 18 years," said the minister. Have instructed all the staff and employees of the health department to ensure that every patient who seeks treatment will get all possible assistance and care." Karnataka govt moves to check unnecessary C-section deliveries in govt hospitals

Bengaluru, Nov 24 (PTI) The <keyword id="6354780" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Karnataka">Karnataka</keyword> government has initiated measures for delivery, distribution and administration of the <keyword id="8904563" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid-19-vaccine">COVID-19 vaccine</keyword> whenever it arrives as advised by the Centre, <keyword id="1169430" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Karnataka-health-minister">Karnataka Health Minister</keyword> <keyword id="6618576" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="dr-k-sudhakar">Dr K Sudhakar</keyword> said on Tuesday. The State Task Force on <keyword id="8763838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid-19">COVID-19</keyword> recently met and reviewed preparations made for vaccine storage and delivery, he said. "The government has identified 29,451 session sites (vaccination sites) and 10,008 vaccinators as per the norms of the Universal Immunization Programme," Dr Sudhakar said in a statement. The Health Care Workers' data has already been compiled for all the government facilities. At least 80 percent of the private health facilities have also shared their data. Compilation of data for the remaining 20 per cent private facilities is likely to be completed in a week, the minister added. On the storage facilities in the state, the Minister said Karnataka has around 2,855 cold chain points for storage and distribution of vaccines. "With a view to having a better supply chain network and distribution of vaccines in a timely manner, three new regional vaccine stores Bengaluru Urban, Shivamogga and Ballari have been proposed," Sudhakar pointed out. He opined that these newly proposed Regional Vaccine Stores will also require additional Walk-in-Coolers and Walk- in-Freezers. The assessment of the Vaccine Stores has been completed, he noted. The state has 10 Walk-in-Coolers and 4 Walk-in-Freezers. Further, the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India is going to supply three Walk-in-Coolers and two Walk-in-Freezers for which necessary civil works are being initiated. "In order to have an exact assessment of the cold storage capacity required for COVID-19 vaccine programme, the number of doses in each vial, the volume of a vial, need to be assessed," Sudhakar said. On dry storage facility, Sudhakar said the state needs to have dry storage space assessment for the vaccine programme. He explained that the Government of India has already allocated certain deep freezers and ice lined refrigerators as per the Universal Immunization Programme norms. Regarding the usage of animal husbandry department's facilities, the minister said in order to have adequate capacity, the cold storage facilities of the Animal Husbandry Department are also being compiled. Further, the spare cold storage facilities available with private hospitals especially the chain hospital is also being assessed, he added.

Karnataka's Health Minister says the state is well prepared for COVID-19 vaccine delivery

With the death of an 85-year-old man in Hassan, Karnataka recorded its first death from the H3N2 variant in the state. According to <keyword id="48418" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="health-department" source="Orion">health department</keyword> sources, the elderly man from Alur in Hassan died on March 1. Commissioner of Health Department D. Randeep, who he had advised to conduct an audit of the death, confirmed the death due to the H3N2 variant on Friday. The now-deceased man carried symptoms of fear, chills, cough and sore throat. Following the death, teams from the health department are carrying out medical tests at Alur and surrounding regions. The swab samples are being collected from people with symptoms and sent for testing. The department has given directions to monitor people with comorbidities and those above 60 years of age. Awareness is being created among people not to go for self-medication if they develop symptoms. More than 50 cases of H3N2 have been reported across the state and six cases are confirmed in Hassan district alone, the sources stated. The state government has held a high-level meeting and also released detailed guidelines in this regard. Karnataka records its first H3N2 variant death

Karnataka Health Minister Dr. K. <keyword id="198622" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sudhakar" source="Orion">Sudhakar</keyword> said on Monday that 26 persons have tested positive for the H3N2 variant in the state, and among these two cases are reported from <keyword id="6354321" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bengaluru" source="Orion">Bengaluru</keyword>. "Children below the age of 15 years face more danger from the H3N2 variant. It also infects persons above the age of 60 years," he stated. Addressing a press conference at the Vidhana Soudha after holding a high-level meeting over the rising <keyword id="8764262" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="covid" source="Orion">Covid</keyword> cases and H3N2 variant, Sudhakar also advised that pregnant women need to be careful. Sudhakar also said that a total of 60 cases of Adenovirus, which causes acute respiratory infections (<keyword id="232428" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ari" source="Orion">ARI</keyword>), were found in Karnataka. "For six months, the staff of the Health department have not been wearing masks. Right from this day, the staff who work in hospitals and health care centres must wear masks," he said. "From January to March, a total of 20 cases of the H1N1 variant have been found in the state. There is a rise in Adenovirus cases. But, there is no need to panic. All precautions have been taken. There is no shortage of medicines. As temperature soars in summer, one should take precaution," Minister Sudhakar said. "It is not appropriate for the people to take medicines by themselves. Overdose of preventive medicines is also not good. People should avoid going out often between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Otherwise, there are more chances of getting infected," the Minister stated. "The state Health department would give separate guidelines. The swab test will be done for diagnosing H3N2 virus like Covid test," he added. Karnataka govt advises caution after 26 people test positive for H3N2 variant

Bengaluru, Jun 10 () The Karnataka government on Wednesday said coronavirus tests conducted in the state has crossed the four lakh mark, while the recovery rate remained at 44 per cent. Sharing the daily COVID-19 bulletin on his Twitter handle, Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar said till Tuesday 4,00,257 samples were tested in 71 COVID-19 testing labs across the state. "Karnataka crossed 4 lakh tests mark on Tuesday. So far, we tested 4,00,257 samples in 71 #COVID19 testing labs across the state with a positivity rate of 1.4 per cent," he said. He tweeted that the state's recovery rate remained healthy at 44 per cent with 2,605 discharges and 5,921 cumulative cases. The minister said Karnataka was home to nearly a tenth of the total testing labs in India. According to the Karnataka Health department, out of the four lakh odd samples tested, 3,87,027 samples were reported negative. The total active cases in the state as on Tuesday evening were 3,248 whereas 66 people lost their lives to coronavirus so far. Yediyurappa effected a minor reshuffle of his cabinet on Monday by divesting B. Sreeramulu from health and <keyword id="10095021" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="family-welfare-portfolio">family welfare portfolio</keyword> and assigning <keyword id="5384" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Medical-education-minister">Medical Education Minister</keyword>, Dr K. Sudhakar as his Health Minister. According to party insiders, Sreeramulu had faced numerous embarrassments ever since the Covid-19 pandemic broke out in March, as since then, Dr Sudhakar had always been in the forefront to brief the media as well as the opposition over Covid-related issues. Karnataka cabinet reshuffle: Yediyurappa replaces health minister in minor reshuffle

At least 1.93 crore or 27.3% of the people in Karnataka are either infected by coronavirus or had the infection in the past, as of 16 September, revealed a survey by the government to estimate the prevalence of COVID-19 in the state. Sharing details of the findings, Karnataka Health Minister Dr K Sudhakar said the survey was carried out from September 3 to 16 across 30 districts in the state. According to Sudhakar, the state government wanted to ascertain the pace at which the COVID-19 cases were increasing. "The government has to have clear information on how it is spreading in the community in the districts, how to prevent its spread and action to be taken. Hence, this survey was conducted," said the minister. The sample size is 16,585 in the entire state. Of this, the test reports of 15,624 have been submitted, he added. Besides the Rapid Antigen Test and the RT PCR, IgG test was also carried out. Immunoglobulin G (IgG) is the most common antibody in blood and other body fluids, which protects against the bacterial and viral infections. It is developed after an infection or immunisation. The survey also found that the infection fatality rate due to COVID-19 was 0.05 per cent. "Out of 7.07 crore estimated population in Karnataka, the study estimates that 1.93 crore (27.3 per cent) of the people are either currently infected or already had the infection in the past, as of 16 September 2020," the report said. It further stated that the present IFR is likely an underestimate. The overall IFR based on the first round of sentinel serosurvey findings is 0.07 per cent. Based on the report, it is estimated that the overall weighted adjusted seroprevalence of IgG was 16.4 percent. "It suggests that in the surveyed population, 16.4 per cent of the people were infected in the past and found to have IgG antibodies against SARS CoV-2," the finding revealed. The report mentioned that the districts with a high Infection Fatality Rate (IFR) need clinical care to be improved. Noting that the state was passing through different stages of COVID-19 pandemic in different districts, the report said the surge in cases is yet to occur in the districts with the lowest estimated prevalence of COVID-19 such as Dharwad, Gadag, Chikkaballapur, Bagalkot, and Mahadevapura in Bengaluru urban district. The study recommended establishing the district-level facility-based sentinel sero-surveillance to monitor the trend of infection in the long term systematically. This can inform local decision-making at the district level to mount the necessary public health response towards the COVID-19 epidemic in Karnataka. The government said that a follow-up survey has been planned to measure the extent and speed of transmission and evaluate the impact of containment strategies over time in the state.

Bengaluru, Jul 5 () Amid the rising COVID-19 cases here, over 3,000 beds in private hospitals have been reserved for treating patients while a 10,100-bed coronavirus care centre, the biggest in the country, has been set up, authorities said on Sunday. Karnataka Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar said 3,331 beds in 72 private hospitals have been earmarked for COVID-19 patients. The city civic body - Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Commissioner B H Anil Kumar said the sprawling Bangalore International Exhibition Centre has been converted into a coronavirus care centre with 10,100 beds. "Across Bengaluru, 3,331 beds have been reserved in 72 hospitals for treating coronavirus patients. By Saturday evening 733 beds were occupied and 2,598 beds were unoccupied," the Medical Education Minister tweeted. Recently, Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa had convened a meeting with private hospital owners during which he directed them to reserve at least 50 per cent beds to treat coronavirus cases. The government had set a target to reserve at least 2,000 beds for coronavirus patients. However, the number has swelled to 3,331. Meanwhile, BBMP Commissioner Anil Kumar on Sunday visited the coronavirus care centre at Bangalore International Exhibition Centre along with Yelahanka BJP MLA S R Vishwanath. "BIEC has been converted into a 10,100 bed Covid Care Centre. Visited the centre along with hon'ble MLA @SRVishwanathBJP, @BBMPSWMJtComm &amp; other #BBMP officials," Kumar tweeted. He also said the centre is well ventilated, has adequate number of toilets, nursing stations, kitchens and other required facilities. The centre is ready to house asymptomatic patients, including children. The BBMP Joint Commissioner (Solid Waste Management), Sarfaraz Khan told P T I, "This is the biggest ever COVID care centre in the country. Delhi has a COVID care centre of 10,000 beds in Radha Soami Satsang." As many as 150 doctors will man the centre. Oxygen facilities will be available in some beds for patients who need it, he said. In addition, there will be adequate arrangements to shift the critically-ill patients to nearby hospitals, Khan added. Bengaluru has seen the biggest ever spike in coronavirus cases in the past one week. The city has witnessed 8,345 positive cases, of which 7,250 are active cases. Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa congratulated the lakhs of students who appeared for the crucial exercise braving the coronavirus pandemic situation. An average of about 98 per cent of 8.5 lakh odd enrolled students took the exams which began on June 25, after the government stuck to its decision to go ahead with them despite rising coronavirus cases but laid down a string of safety measures, including face masks and maintaining distancing by seating only one student a bench. Examinations for all main subjects had been completed and alternative subjects such as music would take place on Saturday, Education department officials said. "I heartily congratulate students who faced the examination even during the coronavirus pandemic," Yediyurappa tweeted. Expressing happiness over the successful completion of the examination, he greeted state Primary and Secondary Education Minister S Suresh Kumar, officers and employees of education department, health department, police and transport personnel. "The exam is a proof that anything can be made possible if all the government departments work in tandem," Kumar tweeted. Later addressing a press conference, he said on Friday 98.10 per cent attendance was recorded compared to 98.76 for the same paper last year. "Credit goes to children. First day, parents were scared and students were sceptical and there was a big challenge before us. But the children appearing for the exam instilled confidence. They came with masks, sanitisers and were careful about maintaining social distancing. Our children have set an example for others to follow," Kumar said. Lauding the students, parents and the government staff who made the exam possible ignoring the virus scare, Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar said Karnataka has set an example by successfully conducting the examination. The Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board, which conducted the examination, faced various challenges. While protecting students from coronavirus infection was the top priority, transportation, security and convincing the parents to allow their children to take up the exam were the other factors it encountered. According to sources in the department, the education officers had directed authorities of all the schools to call the parents and students to make sure that they appear for the examinations. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and boards of various neighbouring states either gave general promotion or decided to give marks to the students based on their performance in the earlier tests conducted by the schools. The exams were conducted at a time when there was a sudden spurt in coronavirus cases in Karnataka, especially Bengaluru. Bengaluru, Jul 3 () Amid the rising coronavirus cases in Bengaluru, the Karnataka COVID Task Force on Friday decided to set up booth-level task force committees across the state including 8,800 in Bengaluru for effective monitoring and surveillance. The task force also released detailed guidelines for home isolation for asymptomatic cases including 17 days 'home isolation' for patients below 50 years of age. It also warned of legal action against those health workers for disrespect to the bodies. Briefing reporters after the meeting, Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar said the local management will be strengthened for effective monitoring and surveillance of COVID-19 cases. "There will be booth-level task force committees throughout the state right from the village to Bengaluru. These task force committees will act at the ultra local level. The task force will act as a structural and functional unit of COVID handling dealing with monitoring, surveillance, checking of all the ILI cases, ambulances and hospitals," he added. He also said the committees will consist of one member each from the Health department, police department, municipalities or Panchayat, volunteers, valveman. The committee will have five to six members. The principal secretary in the Village Development and Panchayat Raj department L K Ateeq has been appointed as the nodal officer to manage the task force in the rural areas whereas in the urban areas, the Urban Development secretary, the municipal administration directors and the municipal commissioner will form the local task force. "In Bengaluru alone 8,800 teams will be formed, which will be coterminous with the 8,800 booths in the city. They will provide the real-time data. They will be imparted training," the minister added. He said there were about 8,800 electoral booths in Bengaluru city and each booth will have a task force committee, adding a nodal officer has been appointed to oversee this. The state level task force also came out with a slew of conditions. As far as home isolation is concerned, it would apply for patients who are below 50 years and have no symptoms of any other disease, and their homes should have a toilet and have an attendant. He also said home isolation duration has been increased from 14 to 17 days. "The people should not get fever in the next three days after completing 14 days, else they will be quarantined for another seven days. If they don't get fever then they will be freed to perform their personal activities," Sudhakar said. Those who are above 50 years and have comorbidities, will be treated at the COVID care centres only and they will be under medical supervision and will be subjected to regular tests, he added. The state is also making arrangements for telecommunication for those who are asymptomatic but wish to speak to a doctor. It was also decided to have at least two ambulances in each of the 198 wards of Bengaluru. The minister said the additional commissioner of police (traffic) will be the nodal officer to coordinate the movement of ambulances. The task force has also appointed a nodal officer to manage the hospitals based on the availability of beds and ventilators. The officer will provide real time information about beds. "We want to make sure that no one has to run from one hospital to another," Sudhakar said. Speaking about the cremation of the bodies, Sudhakar said guidelines have been issued on how how to handle bodies at mortuaries, taking them in the ambulances, human treatment to the deceased while performing the last rites and fumigation of the bed. "Legal action will be taken against those who treat bodies in an inhuman way," Sudhakar said. The state-level task force has also decided to arrange for test reports within 24 hours. It has also been decided to increase the testing capacity from the existing 15,000 a day to 25,000. In view of the spurt in COVID-19 cases, the task force also recommended antigen tests in crowded areas to check whether there was community spread. To a question on closing down the border, the minister said there is no question of lockdown. "We cannot hide from this disease. It is not a solution. We have to live with it now, yet maintain a distance from it," he added. Sudhakar, who is a doctor himself, said COVID-19 is not as deadly a virus as those he had seen in the past and asked people not to be scared of it. GMS SS
