<ul><li>Dr. Ambedkar, heralded as the <keyword id="4780316" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="father-of-Indian-Constitution">Father of Indian Constitution</keyword> was born on April 14, which is observed as <keyword id="6377276" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="ambedkar-jayanti">Ambedkar Jayanti</keyword> year on year.</li><li>The Constitution of India, which contains the fundamental laws and principles of the Indian Democratic Republic was drafted under the chairmanship of Babasaheb Dr. Ambedkar. </li><li>Dr. Ambedkar’s massive contribution to the Constitution of India makes him a great leader who will be remembered for a thousand more years.</li></ul>In 2020, the nation celebrates the 129th birth anniversary of Dr. Ambedkar, who was born on April 14, 1981. From 2015, the government has declared a public holiday in the country on Ambedkar Jayanti. Dr. Ambedkar’s birthday was publicly celebrated in India for the first time in Pune on April 14, 1928. Social activist and Ambedkarite Janardan Sadashiv Ranapisay was the one who initiated the tradition of celebrating Ambedkar Jayanti. On April 14, 1990, the Indian Government honored Dr. Ambedkar with the most prestigious Bharat Ratna Award. Around this time, a life size portrait of Babasaheb Dr. Ambedkar was unveiled in the central hall of the Parliament building. The year stretching from April 14, 1990 to April 14, 1991 was celebrated as the ‘Year of Social Justice’ in memory of Dr. Ambedkar. Behind all these recognitions goes the mammoth contribution of this veteran who guided the drafting of <keyword id="99432" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-constitution">Indian Constitution</keyword>, which is the supreme law book and scripture of the democracy. Dr. Ambedkar’s contribution to the Constitution of India Once India became independent on August 15, 1947, the nation appointed Dr. Ambedkar as the chairman of the constitution drafting committee on August 29, 1947. Dr. Ambedkar strongly opined that the government in a democracy must be a responsible government formed by the representatives of people. He never wanted to impose a constitution on the Indians, rather he submitted that the opinion of the masses on how they wished to be governed must be accepted. He said, “The best government rests on the people, and not on the few on persons and not on property, on the free development of public opinion and not on authority.” Dr. Ambedkar strongly believed that the unity and solidarity of the country can be maintained in the long run only when the gaps between the different classes were equalized. Dr. Ambedkar highly emphasized the religious, caste and gender equality. The reservation system we find in the Indian constitution was purely the brainchild of Dr. Ambedkar who thought of it as a means to create a social balance among the different classes of the population in India. While drafting the constitution, Dr. Ambedkar envisioned a strong India administered by a federal government. When he sought to give the central government more powers, some members of the constituent assembly criticized him saying the idea goes against his own view that the rights and values of every individual in the country and the interests of every province and each village must be ensured. From this point of view, it was contradictory to make the center a strong entity. However, justifying his stand on the strong central government, Dr. Ambedkar said the center must be strong to “save minorities from the misrule of majority” and also “for it is only the center which can work for a common end and for the general interests of the country as a whole.”

Ambedkar Jayanti – The birth anniversary of the father of the Indian Constitution

Prime Minister Narendra <keyword id="6354642" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Modi">Modi</keyword> today launched a series of programs to celebrate the birth anniversary of the architect of the Constitution of India, Dr. BR Ambedkar. The prime minister formally launched the merchant interface of the Bharat Interface for Money (<keyword id="1461878" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bhim">BHIM</keyword>) mobile application. This will enable Indian citizens to make digital payments using their biometric data such as their thumb imprint on a merchant's biometric-enabled device. "The growth of this country is because of all the Prime Ministers and all governments. We can never say that past government has done nothing. It is the demand of time that we make people aware of the sanctity and strength of our Constitution," he said. 
 
Saluting Dr BR Ambedkar for the Constitution: 
 
Lauding Dr. BR Ambedkar for his contribution to the making of the Indian Constitution, the Prime Minister said that Babasaheb consumed all the poison and gave India 'amrit' in the form of the Constitution. He added that the spirit of the parliamentary debates and Constitution is not about one or two individuals, but about the entire country. 
 
Envisaging the need to follow constitutional measures for maintaining democracy: 
 
"If Constitution simply becomes a document to be followed by the government then democracy will suffer, that's why it needs to reach the roots. To strengthen our democracy, it is important for people to know about all the aspects of our Constitution. If we wish to maintain democracy, we must maintain and uphold constitutional measures. Constitution's purpose is not just to define three organs of the state, but also limit their authority," the Prime Minister said.

"The makers of the constitution believed that the Preamble is the soul of the Constitution and no changes should be made to that. Socialist and Secular - these words were added to the Constitution later. Dr Ambedkar didn't find it necessary to insert them in the Preamble because he felt it was already an integral part of India. Despite facing condemnation and insult, BR Ambedkar said he would stay in India and strengthen the country," he said. 
 
Singh said the word 'secular' was being misused in Indian politics. His remarks indirectly condemned Aamir Khan’s statements also. 
 
It seems the Opposition will question the government on the growing intolerance debate in India. However, the government said it is committed to passing crucial bills and ready to discuss all issues, including intolerance.

Constitution Day: Rajnath Singh says word ‘Secular’
is misused in Indian politics

When <keyword id="920574" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Robert-Knight">Robert Knight</keyword> launched two newspapers, The Englishman and The Friend of India, between 1810 and 1890 in India, did he ever fathom about growth of those newspapers? And that they would ignite the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Indian+Independence+movement">Indian Independence movement</a>? Knight, who was a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=British+East+India+Company">British</a> man himself, fought for free press and also resisted attempts by governments, businessmen and cultural spokespersons of influencing press and journalists. Knight became an inspiration for journalists and publishers who started promoting self-rule and criticized the policies of the British. 
 
By 1925, newspapers mushroomed across the length and breadth of the country. Knight’s The Englishman and The Friend of India merged and became The Statesman in 1875, and other newspapers like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=The+Times+of+India+">The Times of India</a> (1838), The Hindu (1878), Anandabazar Patrika (1922) and many more dotted the streets of India. 
 One more newspaper, which grabbed eyeballs was The Indian Express. 7. The New Indian Express: In 1999, eight years after the group's founder Ramnath Goenka's death, the Indian Express Group split between the family members. The southern editions are known as The New Indian Express, while the northern editions, based in Mumbai, retained the original name The Indian Express. Both companies – The Indian Express Group and The New Indian Express are now separate entities.

Taking a dig at actor Aamir Khan over his much-hyped intolerance remarks, Home Minister <keyword id="6355121" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rajnath-Singh">Rajnath Singh</keyword>'s has paid a fitting tribute to BR Ambedkar, the father of the Constitution. 
 
"(BR Ambedkar) had to go through condemnation, insult and barbs, but he controlled his emotion and put forth and took an objective view for India. He never said how he was being ignored and insulted in India. He said I will stay in India and keeping India's values and culture in mind, I will strengthen the country," Mr Singh was quoted saying, as he was opening a special discussion on the Constitution in Parliament, being held to mark the 125th birth anniversary of Dr Ambedkar. 
 
The whole debate started when actor Aamir Khan gave a statement that hinted at his wife Kiran Rao’s growing fear because of the increasingly violent environment in the country. 
 
"When I chat with Kiran at home, she says, 'should we move out of India?' That's a disastrous and big statement for Kiran to make. She fears for her child. She fears what the atmosphere around us will be. She feels scared to open the newspapers every day. That does indicate that there is this sense of growing disquiet, there is growing despondency apart from alarm," he had said. 
 
However, after being criticized and trolled for his comments, the actor clarified his stand in a Facebook post that went like this.

Ambedkar was condemned, yet never thought of leaving the country: Rajnath Singh on Aamir Khan’s controversy

The underbelly of any country can be a subject of debate, but what holds a nation aloft is its constitution. And the Indian Constitution, right from its birth, has stood for social equality across the board. At least, that’s what it aspires to do, as we have learnt over the years. Considered as the Supreme Law of land, the Indian Constitution needs to be revisited and reinvented as the times change and generations need a deeper understanding of their historical and democratic perspectives. 
 
Right now, India is at the crossroads. The old country that only rested on its past glory and celebrated its Independence from the British, a process that tore apart its very soul, has now emerged as one of the top powers in the world. But then, secularism is being questioned now and credentials are put under the scanner by its own people. So the time is quite ripe for revisiting the Indian Constitution. 
 As we all know, Dr <keyword id="857441" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Bhimrao-Ramji-Ambedkar">Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar</keyword> is hailed as the <keyword id="266114" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="prime-architect">prime architect</keyword> of the Indian Constitution and he headed the <keyword id="2027910" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Constitution-Drafting-Committee">Constitution Drafting Committee</keyword>. This 448-page document is divided into 25 parts, starting with a preamble. This sacrosanct document is the lifeline of India that holds together the country’s diverse cultures and different faiths. 
 
When the time is right to take another look at a document which is as old as Independence itself, it needs a newer perspective and format to reach the people coming from different age-groups. The old and the wise may have an easy understanding of the huge and complex document, but the young people need to be clued in on what governs their life on this land. 
 <keyword id="271" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="actor">Actor</keyword> <keyword id="6355923" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Aamir-Khan">Aamir Khan</keyword> could be touching hearts with his soul-stirring show Satyamev Jayate, which is laying bare today’s realities – both positive and negative – on a private channel. 
 But what’s actually significant now is the new show on <keyword id="2170947" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="Rajya-Sabha-Television">Rajya Sabha Television</keyword> called Samvidhaan, made by none other than the renowned director <keyword id="29916" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Shyam-Benegal">Shyam Benegal</keyword>. In the 80s Benegal had directed Discovery of India (Bharat Ek Khoj), based on a book penned by the <keyword id="202495" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="first-prime-minister">first Prime Minister</keyword> of independent India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. The show was a huge hit in those days when Doordarshan was the only TV channel in the country. But the reason behind its success was not the absence of choice for viewers but the impeccable treatment of characters and the intriguing story-telling through every single frame that fascinated the viewers, irrespective of their age-groups. 
 
Benegal, who has created a niche for himself with his supremely well-made movies in the 70s and 80s – mostly categorised as parallel cinema – is experimenting again with his 10-part mini series titled Samvidhaan – The Story of the Making of the Constitution of India. The show, telecast every Sunday at 10 am, a ‘prime’ time slot, targets a pan-India audience with its discourse on the Indian Constitution. 
 
Enough of analyses and interpretations have come up regarding the political situations that existed around the time when the Indian Constitution was drafted. The work of drafting a constitution for India started soon after the country gained its political independence from the ruling Great Britain. 
 
The show, which tells us the story of the Indian Constitution, lays as much emphasis on the incidents that occurred around the period when this all-important document was made. The first draft of Bharat Ka Samvidhan, as it is known in Hindi, was first submitted on November 4, 1947. The <keyword id="2170946" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Draft-Committee">Draft Committee</keyword> had spent considerable time, developing a constitution that was made to suit the specific needs of India – a country which had lived through a turbulent past and was looking forward to continue on its own after remaining under the British rule for two centuries. 
 
Amendments, discussions and debates took place for about two years since the first draft was presented, leading to nearly 2,000 amendments to the original document prepared by the Drafting Committee members, headed by Dr Ambedkar. 
 
The Assembly intermittently held open sessions for the public over these two years before adopting the Constitution, which was approved by its 308 members on January 24, 1950. Two days later, the Constitution, which was federal in nature, became the Supreme Law of the land, and all the States and Union Territories of India came under its jurisdiction. 
 
The exercise during the days of putting together this crucial document was not only political, but also secular and neutral in nature – keeping in mind the welfare of all communities with special focus on the underprivileged. It was a hugely emotional moment for the leaders involved in the process and they made sure that the Constitution was accepted in the Parliament. 
 
With Samvidhaan, the show on television, Shyam Benegal tells an engaging story of a country that wrote its own fate to ensure a better socio-economic and political future, instead of being tossed around and dominated by stronger forces. The show comes at a time when India seems to be on the verge of leadership change and every poll survey shows that the secular and minority-friendly atmosphere of the country is in jeopardy. 
 
Maybe, just maybe, the country’s youth will spare a thought for what dominates their life and will come to respect it more than they respect technology.
