This is however only one part of the downvoting experiment on Twitter. Twitter also confirmed that this isn’t a dislike button and upvoting or downvoting won’t change the order of replies. Twitter starts testing downvoting on replies but it’s not that exciting

<keyword id="6354616" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Twitter">Twitter</keyword> is testing a new feature where users will be able to upvote and downvote replies on tweets, saying this is still not a 'dislike' button.<br /><br />Currently under testing with a select group of <keyword id="75489" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IOS">iOS</keyword> users, the feature is available in various styles (up and down arrows, a heart icon and a down arrow, and thumbs up and thumbs down icons).<br /><br />"Some of you on iOS may see different options to up or down vote on replies. Twitter for iOS starts testing a Reddit-like upvote and downvote button

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul><li><strong>Facebook is testing a "downvote" button, bringing us closer to the "dislike" button that users have demanded.</strong></li><li><strong>The downvote button is similar to the signature functionality of Reddit.</strong></li><li><strong>Only a few users have the downvote button - at least, for now.</strong></li></ul><p>&#xa0;</p><p>Facebook appears to be testing a Reddit-like downvote button - bringing us closer to the much-requested "dislike" feature.</p><p>A select few users noticed Thursday a downvote option appeared underneath comments on posts, next to the "like" and "reply" buttons. It is unclear how many users have the downvote option or whether it will be a permanent update.</p><p>The new button was first <a href="https://twitter.com/taylorlorenz/status/961720791858544641?ref_src=twcamp%5Eshare%7Ctwsrc%5Eios%7Ctwgr%5Ecom.tinyspeck.chatlyio.share%7Ctwcon%5E7100%7Ctwterm%5E0">spotted</a> by Taylor Lorenz of the Daily Beast.</p><p>According to reports on Twitter, when users choose to downvote a comment, i users can choose from a list of options explaining the decision. For example, you can mark the comment as "offsensive" or "misleading." In this way, it seems that Facebook is enlisting its users in its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-news-feed-rank-news-outlets-trustworthy-readers-2018-1">ongoing campaign to stamp out misinformation and propaganda on the site</a>.</p><p>A downvote button would be is similar to what users find on Reddit, which allows users to upvote and downvote comments on a post as a marker of popularity.&#xa0;</p><p>In 2015, Facebook Design Chief&#xa0;<span>Julie Zhuo&#xa0;<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-members-want-a-dislike-button-2015-11">said</a> she had heard users complain about only having the ability to "like" a comment.&#xa0;</span>CEO Mark Zuckerberg also said in 2015 the company was working on a downvote button at the time.&#xa0;</p><p><span>"One of the things we've heard people tell us over and over again is&#xa0;they want a 'Dislike' button, because not everything is likeable content," Zhuo said at Fusion's Real Fortune Fair in 2015. It looks like Facebook is testing the next best thing to a 'dislike' button

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Hackread</span></p><p class="caption">Here's what one of the scam Facebook ads looks like.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Scammers are using fake Facebook "dislike" buttons in an attempt to trick unwitting users into handing over money, having malicious code downloaded to their computers, and liking pages, <a href="http://digiday.com/platforms/phishers-target-facebook-users-scams-disguised-dislike-buttons/">Digiday reports.</a></p><p>Several security blogs claim there has been an influx of ads promoting early access to a Facebook dislike button since CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed the company is responding to requests for a "dislike" option by allowing users to express empathy in an easy way, similar to the like button.</p><p>Many people took that to mean that Facebook will be adding a dislike button, despite Zuckerberg saying that such an option wouldn't be advisable because it could encourage a Reddit-style system of upvoting and downvoting.</p><p>Nevertheless, scammers have leaped on the opportunity to use anticipation about the button to exploit users eagerly awaiting its introduction. One such scam uses the wording "Get newly introduced facebook dislike button on your profile [sic]," adding that "Dislike Button is invite only feature [sic]."</p><p>The scam tricks the user into liking a page and sharing the link with their friends. Some of the scams are also directing users towards expensive premium rate mobile phone subscriptions, online surveys that generate the scammers income every time a user fills them out, or even downloading malicious software to their computers, <a href="https://grahamcluley.com/2015/09/right-cue-come-facebook-dislike-button-scams/">security analyst Graham Cluley reports on his blog.</a></p><p><a href="https://www.hackread.com/facebook-dislike-button-scam/">Hackread writes</a> that it hasn't been confirmed that anyone has been infected with malware through the dislike button scam yet, but advises that users "stay away from these malicious links because they won't be providing you with access to the dislike button."</p><p><a href="https://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2015/09/21/guess-what-facebook-dislike-scams-are-back/">The Sophos Naked Security blog advises</a>: "The important thing about a Facebook-provided Dislike button, of course, is that you wouldn't need to go to some random-looking third-party site to download it. So, Dislike button scams ought to be obviously bogus these days. Today is a special day because today is the day I can say we're working on it and shipping it," Zuckerberg said during a Q&amp;A at Facebook's headquarters.</span></p><p><span class="s1">Zuckerberg said that the social network didn't immediately design way because it didn't want it to become a Reddit-style system of upvoting and downvoting. </span></p><p><span class="s1">"</span><span class="s1">That isn't what we're here to build in the world," Zuckerberg said.</span></p><p>But, Facebook and Zuckerberg have realized that people aren't looking to downvote each other, but to have an option to express feelings other than "liking." Zuckerberg cited moments like the news about the recent refugee crisis or even posts about family members who have died. Users don't want to "like" those items, but right now, have no other option.</p><p><span class="s1">"</span><span class="s1">What they really want is the ability to express empathy. His name is Chris Lee, and he accused the game's makers of "predatory behavior" in an address this week.</p><p>"This game is a Star Wars-themed online casino, designed to lure kids into spending money," he said. "It's a trap." </p><p>Lee said that he's looking into legislation in the coming year that could prohibit the sale of some games to people under 21 years of age. Within those loot boxes are various in-game items of varying quality that make your character stronger. </p><p>The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/star-wars-battlefront-2-electronic-arts-removes-microtransactions-2017-11">system was turned off</a> before the game officially launched - when some people were able to play an early release of the game, they bristled at having to pay more money for certain features and took to Reddit to warn their fellow gamers. The game's maker, Electronic Arts, issued a response that became <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/ListOfComments/wiki/downvoted">the most downvoted Reddit post of all time</a>.</p><p>In so many words, you could pay real money to make your character stronger than other players - a practice that is routinely criticized for its "pay to win" effect. A state politician in Hawaii says the new 'Star Wars' game encourages kids to gamble and he wants to ban sales to anyone under 21

<p>Last year, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/reddit-april-fools-joke-the-button-2015-4">Reddit's "The Button"</a> made everybody's April Fools' Day a lot more stressful.</p><p>Now, Reddit is following it up with <a href="reddit.com/r/joinrobin">Robin</a>, a very mysterious week-long social experiment that once again challenges the link-sharing community's 36 million users to work together.</p><p>Reddit hasn't shared much information about this game, or its goal. But unlike last time with "The Button," it looks like Robin will have some clear winners and a lot of losers.</p><p>Here's how it works, according to the best information we have.</p><p>First, go to <a href="https://www.reddit.com/robin/join">Reddit.com/robin/join</a>, where it once again begins with a button:</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container"><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Matt Weinberger/Business Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></p><p>Click it once, and it reveals a second button labeled "Participate." Robin only keeps the polls open for a few minutes at a time. Robin offers an option to receive desktop notifications in the Chrome browser to remind you when it's time to vote.</p><p>And, of course, trolls can easily ruin any good Robin streak by voting to Stay or Abandon, which either stalls or demolishes all progress through the game. Reddit's 'Robin' is a brilliant social experiment that pits millions of internet users against each other

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Joey Cosco/Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">The Imgur office.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Imgur, which began in 2009 as a university side project to create a simple way to share images, now claims to be the top online destination for millennial men in the US - over Facebook, Twitter, and Twitch (according to September comScore data detailing the % composition of its unique visitors.)</p><p>More than 900 billion images were viewed on Imgur in 2015 alone and now the site is talking up its scale and its unique proposition to advertisers as it looks to convert those views into serious revenue.</p><p>Steve Patrizi, Imgur's vice president of marketing and revenue, told Business Insider how 2016 is setting up to be a big year for the company as advertisers begin to realize the platform's ability to help them overcome the rise of ad blocking and its ability to tap into the increasing popularity of "geek culture."</p><h2>"If you look at the comments, there are people who are literally begging for more [ads]"</h2><p>Imgur only began testing ads in 2015, but they've somewhat surprisingly gone down a storm with its user base, 70 to 80% of which are males between the age of 18-to-34-years-old - the exact demographic that is usually cynical of <keyword id="35666" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="advertising">advertising</keyword> and are the biggest users of ad blockers.</p><p>The cost for a Promoted Post (so far, Imgur's only ad format) varies, depending on the advertiser's overall commitment, but Promoted Posts tend to reach a CPM (cost per mille/thousand views) of between $30 and $40.</p><p>That might seem high, considering <a href="http://digiday.com/platforms/instagram-partner-says-video-ads-cost-little-2-cents-view/">the average CPM on photo-sharing app Instagram, for example, is reportedly between about $3 and $6</a>, but it's the hard-to-reach audience that raises their pricetag. Plus, on Imgur, the advertiser owns almost the entire page (apart from the comments, a small square display ad, and an image gallery that allows users to navigate to other photos) meaning the ads are not competing for attention with too many other things on the screen. Plus, Imgur images and animated GIFs are easily shared, which can help them go viral on other sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit.</p><p>Imgur has tested around 60 promoted posts over the past six months for brands including Old Spice, PlayStation, MTV, and eBay.</p><p>With Old Spice, Imgur's team helped the brand tailor its existing content to the Imgur audience. The brand asked users to vote - using Imgur's upvote mechanism - for their favorite GIFs as part of its "GIF Off" campaign.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://imgur.com/gallery/BcZMG/">Imgur</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>It was clearly a piece of advertising, but Imgur's users appeared to love it, judging by the comments:</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://imgur.com/gallery/BcZMG/">Imgur</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Patrizi said: "If you look at the comments, there are people who are literally begging for more. They are pleading at Old Spice not to stop their ad campaigns - these are the people who go out of their way to block ads and here they are saying: 'Please, give us more ads!'"</p><h2>Imgur's big sell to advertisers: "Geek culture at massive scale"</h2><p>Imgur's go-to-market strategy is that it's not like other platforms. The sell to advertisers is "geek culture at massive scale."</p><p>Patrizi describes the audience: "These aren't necessarily people who are really excited and into sports, or golf, or boating. These are people who are into video games, science, technology, movies, and internet culture in general. As you know, that's becoming mainstream. What used to be seen as being on the fringe is now becoming incredibly popular. So whether it's that video games now make more money than movies, or if you look at all the recent blockbusters and how they're all populated with movies about science fiction, fantasy, dinosaurs, superheroes - and now we have Dr Who merchandise on sale at Target, which years ago would have been unheard of."</p><p>The same too could likely be said of Reddit - which is an investor in Imgur and is also a platform where many Imgur photos go viral - which notches up far more visits: <a href="https://www.reddit.com/about/">234 million uniques in December</a>. And while sites like Facebook have all-encompassing userbases, its many layers of targeting options mean advertisers could simply opt to target millennial males with an interest in comic books, for example, into their ad buys.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Imgur</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>But Patrizi said there are three things that separate Imgur from the rest:</p><p><strong>"Authenticity" -</strong> Unlike other platforms where you have to give your real name and real identity, people can be anonymous on Imgur, which allows them to be themselves. "With this group of specific and nuanced people, they feel like the internet was really supposed to allow them to be themselves but so many services today require you to authenticate and share your real name and they feel like: 'Wow, that really does suppress my ability to be who I am. Now I feel like I'm in a world where I have to almost kind of curate a certain persona."</p><p><strong>"A shared experience"</strong> - Unlike other social networks and platforms, the feed on Imgur isn't personalized to each individual user. People see content at the same time as other users.</p><p><strong>"Democratic programming"</strong> - There's not a follower model on Imgur. So whether you post a photo, or Oprah Winfrey does, you have an equal chance of it being seen by millions of people.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://imgur.com/gallery/FUCUa">Imgur</a></span></p><p class="caption">A Promoted Post from eBay's "A Tactical Guide to Surviving the Holidays" Imgur ad campaign.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>There's still some way to go</h2><p>While Imgur has a big community of 150 million active users and $40 million in funding from VC firm Andreessen Horowitz and Reddit, the company itself is still small-scale and has a long way to go before it can reasonably compete with the likes of Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter for ad dollars. Patrizi won't comment on Imgur's revenue figures.</p><p>Imgur's staff grew from under 20 people in 2014 to more than 60 in 2015 - although the sales team is staffed by just two people. However, it is exploring using its upvote/downvote method to determine what types of advertising and content users like, with the potential to open that up as a targeting option further down the line.</p><p>Patrizi said: "Right now we are not going out to the market suggesting we have great targeting capabilities. There are some other options out there on the internet if that is what you are after, but what we are offering is an audience that in many ways is already a targeted audience, but is at scale ... if you're looking for a very specific, finite targeting, right now that's not something we're going to be able to help out with."</p><p>But while Imgur might be behind in some areas, Patrizi thinks it is leading other digital platforms in another respect: "We believe the presence of advertising on Imgur can make Imgur better."</p><p>He added: "We want the user to feel like they are missing out [if they turn on their ad blocker.] You see buttons [elsewhere on the web] almost apologizing that there is an ad - 'you can skip in 15 seconds.' It's like we are saying: 'We know you hate it, so we are apologizing up front.' We want to be part of an environment where ads add value for the user.
