Chinese smartphone maker <keyword id="874458" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Xiaomi">Xiaomi</keyword> on Wednesday announced its latest version of in-house Android-based skin <keyword id="9004889" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="miui-12">MIUI 12</keyword> in India. The <keyword id="8552990" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="miui-12-update">MIUI 12 update</keyword> will add smooth animations with improved details to the icons, new calendar features, AI calling, new privacy and security tools, multitasking features, animations and wallpapers, the company said in a statement. The OS will notify every time an app is accessing a sensitive feature such as the cameras, microphone, contacts, location and more. With MIUI 12, users can now remove sensitive information like the location and the metadata before sharing a picture with anyone. It also allows one to delete a screenshot automatically after sharing, which in turn helps one save space and maintain privacy. The new OS also comes with an ultra-battery saver which would enable a user to extend the phone's standby time and reduce power consumption. With this even at 5 per cent, the phone can last for an additional 5 hours with ultra-battery saver. Xiaomi has also added ‘Mi Light Core Animation' framework to ensure the system smoothness of the software.

But I am not complaining; the flat edges and rounded corners make it easy to hold. You can maintain a confident grip on the smartphone, and the matte finish on the back defuses any chances of it sliding away. This is a big phone with a 6.7-inch display, yet the weight management here is commendable. Light in hand, no one side here feels heavier. This is despite a considerably big camera module. The variant with me is in the Poco Yellow color, which the brand uses predominantly. This isn’t a regular yellow, but rather a sparkling matte finish. I like this one considering it’s not over the top or flashy. I also like the attention to detail, like the yellow trim on the power button. Subtle but worth noting. The power button also houses the fingerprint sensor, which is very snappy. I am not a big fan of big device brandings, so it stands out like a sore thumb. Like a headphone jack mounted on top. So good news for people like me who carry a pair of earphones. Other perks include an IR blaster, and a standard Redmi quirk. It is one of those features that you might not miss till you need it. So, it’s good to have it here. There is also a speaker grill here, which also means, yes, it does have a stereo speaker set-up. At the bottom, it has a USB Type-C charging port next to the speaker and the SIM card slot. The smartphone supports two nano SIMs. Overall, from the design and build perspective, the Poco X5 Pro is a mild upgrade over the X4. While that is fine, I am not too happy about how much it resembles other devices, especially the Redmi Note line-up. This is a subjective opinion, but important enough to mention it. Fortunately, the execution here is slightly different, so that is a saving grace. I started using the X5 Pro right after the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/oppo-reno-8t-review/articleshow/97571272.cms">Oppo Reno8 T</a>. So don’t be surprised if I draw some comparisons here. While the Reno8 T sported a curved AMOLED display, the one on Poco X5 Pro follows a rather generic flat form factor. I have mentioned it before, curved displays look aesthetic and premium, but they have a recurring issue of mistouches. Having a flat display solves that problem altogether. And if it’s executed well, then even better. The display on the Poco X5 Pro will surprise you, as it surprised me simply because it got the basics right. I want to start with my favorite. The smartphone supports an adaptive refresh rate. This means it can go from 30Hz to 120Hz, depending on your viewing content. This feature is missed out on most devices in this price range and works well here. Switching from web pages where the display was churning out 90Hz to 120Hz refresh rate to a game would see a smooth transition. Coming to the viewing experience on the X5 Pro. Poco, in their briefing, mentioned how this device is centered around watching content. And in my experience, they have met with their claims. Starting with the fact that the smartphone supports HD content across applications. So be it Youtube or streaming content on OTT apps like Netflix, the content will be high quality. I have been watching the Last of US lately, and as I mentioned in my Oppo Reno8 T review, it is perfect to judge a display. The X5 Pro delivered a satisfactory performance here. While the HDR was spot on and the colors looked vibrant, I felt at some places that the display was not bright enough. When it comes to VFX-heavy content, the brightness of a display plays a major role since it helps to amplify the impact of the said frame. Poco X5 Pro, while producing detailed output, lagged in providing appropriate brightness. This was solved to a large extent by Dolby Vision HDR, which to Poco’s credit, chimes in wherever its compatible. Also, reading texts and animation while driving the device daily wasn't a problem for me. Another important factor is how we get an always-on display here. It’s a standard MiUi projection which I like, with clean text and animation. Where Poco truly shines is the audio set-up here. The stereo speaker set-up on the device is loud and gets even better with Dolby Vision HDR. The volume output is loud enough to ditch a Bluetooth speaker and compliments the display well. This section feels like a déjà vu to me. With the Redmi Note 12 Pro Plus, I had a similar complaint that I have here. While the competition provides Android 13 at similar price points, why is Poco lagging? While the execution and experience will be the same with the Xiaomi skin, the latest Android version means a longer update cycle. This is after the promise of providing two Android OS updates and four years of security updates but the timing for the same matters more. The Poco team did mention that they are planning for an Android 13 rollout this month, and I hope it's sooner than later. Coming the experience of using the device, it delivers a standard MiUi performance. The animations are clean and interactive. Reiterating myself about how a clean UI plays a crucial role in the overall experience, and MiUi is just that. The customization options here are plenty, especially the widgets. From calendars to providing access to widgets for downloaded apps, the UI is stable. I wish Poco incorporated Android 13’s visual treatment here. With bigger tiles and bold controls, it would make the experience even better. There is also a dedicated game turbo, which is enabled every time we tap on a game. I also talked about it in my Redmi Note 12 Pro Plus review. While the audience for that device might be universal, the Poco X5 Pro’s demand is mostly concentrated on performance-hungry consumers. For them, the game turbo will come in handy. It enables you to create user profiles and provides a bunch of shortcuts. It also gives you a real-time reading of the temperature. I wish down the line we get to see custom Poco skin on these devices. It is difficult to differentiate them from products in the Xiaomi portfolio. Moving on, I have not encountered any bugs that have troubled my experience. This is a brand-new device running a stable UI and an established OS. It will be interesting to see how it behaves after the Android 13 update. Performance Poco X5 Pro is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G 5G SoC. In the media briefing, the Poco team explained extensively how this processor suited the device for delivering its desired performance. I had my sincere doubts about it, considering we have also seen the processor on other devices. So I wanted to see what difference I would observe here. And so far, it has fared really well. Mostly because of the subordinating hardware choices. Most importantly, the cooling chamber keeps the thermals in check. I want to start with heavy workloads like gaming. I have been playing COD: Mobile for the past week on the X5 Pro, and my experience has been smooth. The graphics capacity of the phone is maxed out, and the rendering speeds were spot on. Throughout my hour-long sessions, I observed stable frame rates. The performance was similar on Asphalt 9 as well. However, with Asphalt, I could notice the smartphone warming up, especially when the battery was under the 40% mark. I can call Poco X5 Pro a suitable device for gaming. To give you a reference, the Geekbench score for my review unit is also worth noting. The single-core score is 786, while the multi-core score is 2949. This is a significant jump from Reno8 T’s single-core score of 691 and multi-core score of 2027. This also resonates in everyday tasks, whether browsing the web or accessing social media apps. The smartphone delivers stable performance across the board. The variant with me packs in 8GB of RAM, sufficient to handle heavy workloads like gaming and, of course, lighter apps. That being said, the retention rate is not very high. Expect losing out on the last visual if you expect to jump back in a background app after a break. The internal storage here is 256GB which should be more than enough for most users. I suggest using this variant instead of the 6GB RAM variant since it will be a long-term investment. Battery life is where the X5 Pro absolutely shines. The 5000 mAh battery gave me an average screen time of five and a half hours. This is after watching content, casually using social media, and gaming daily. The bundled 67W charger juices the battery from 0-100% in about 45 minutes with background apps and active internet. So, you are looking at quick recharge cycles and long battery life, which is always commendable. Spoiler alert, camera results have blown me away, mostly because my expectations were not very high here. After all, Poco is not promoting the camera prowess here. Especially the 108MP primary sensor, which is the star here. The 108MP sensor can deliver detailed images while maintaining correct color tones. The HDR is also spot on. I also liked how the UI lets you zoom in on the 108MP shots. As if the smartphone is boasting of its results. Indian skin tones can be tricky to crack, but the smartphone is yet to miss out. We generally crop many images to make thumbnails for our video content on social media. I have clicked two thumbnails with the Poco X5 Pro in the past week. Mostly because taking out PNGs from detailed images is always better. Even without the 108MP sensor, the regular shots here are solid, but you will notice some noise in specific colors. Especially the reds, like in this picture of flowers. We do not have a dedicated depth sensor, yet the portrait shots are impressive. The edge detection is precise, and the AI-generated blur is not out of proportion. This mean streak ends abruptly under low lighting, where the camera nose dives. The images registered some noise, and the shots looked grainy. Next, we have the ultra-wide sensor in action, which opens up a 120-degree field of view. Performing like a standard ultra-wide sensor, this one gives you more room in your frames. However, I noticed a slight color shift in the frame when it switched to ultra-wide. The video performance here is decent; nothing to shout about despite the camera recording 4K videos up to 30fps. The video output maintains the correct colors but loses out on details, especially when shooting something in motion. The video quality from the selfie camera, especially on 1080P 60fps, impressed me a lot. I recorded some videos in natural and artificial lighting, and the results were impressive. So if you are a vlogger, this is good news. Verdict Poco X5 Pro achieves its goal by delivering performance in key areas. Be it gaming, everyday workloads, battery, and even photography. My only issue is the design combined with the UI, which makes it resemble a Xiaomi smartphone. This ambition can be credited to the success of the<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/news/xiaomi-pad-5-review-is-it-best-android-alternate-to-ipad-air/articleshow/91647787.cms"> Xiaomi Pad 5</a>, a premium tablet that is priced slightly higher and has slightly superior internals. Redmi claims this tablet is developed with both performance and content consumption in focus. A case in point is the MediaTek Helio G99 gaming SoC and 10.61-inch screen with 90Hz refresh rate. The composition looks good on paper, but there are several such options in the market. The real question is whether it can turn out to be the best of all in its segment. Is it? Let’s find out. Price &amp; Availability Redmi Pad is available in 3 configurations. There is a base variant with 3GB of RAM and 64GB of storage offered at ₹14,999 Then there is a variant with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage offered at a price of ₹17,999. Finally, a variant with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage is coming for ₹19,999. All the variants are WiFi only. It is available on Amazon and Redmi’s D2C websites. Design Redmi Pad borrows design language from the Xiaomi Pad 5. Like the Mi Pad 5, Redmi Pad feels solid to hold, and its flat edges provide an additional grip without digging into hands. Sporting a slate design, the Redmi Pad is thin at just around half an inch and feels premium. I asked my peers to guess the price based on design; most thought it to be a more expensive tablet when they held it for the first time. <div type="image" title="Redmi Pad sports a slim build" msid="94644220" hostid="261"></div> Given the massive screen size, it has a considerable amount of real estate. This is taken care of with the even weight distribution that Redmi has done on the tablet. The tablet looks fine in this colour scheme. There is a moonlight silver and a mint green colour available as well. The tablet comes with IP52 water and dust resistant rating, which is re-ensuring since you can travel with it without any worries. Redmi will also be providing cover cases for the Redmi Pad. I have yet to get my hands on it, but I will update the section if I get to use them. Other design elements include a power button on the top right of the tablet while holding it in portrait orientation. It changes its position to the top left when you put the tablet in landscape. In both cases, the power button is easy to reach. Similarly, there are volume rockers on the right when the tablet is in portrait orientation, meaning the top left in landscape orientation. Like the power button, they are also tactile and easily accessible. I would like to point out that Redmi Pad 5’s power button doesn’t house a fingerprint sensor. The tablet comes with face unlock instead. You don’t get a 3.5mm headphone jack on the tablet, which is fine with me, but it could be an important feature for some. I use TWS buds and prefer them over wired earphones. But if you want to use wired earphones, you can use a Type-C to 3.5mm converter. When asked about skipping the 3.5mm jack here to the Redmi product team, they answered that it is a solvable concern. We also see a micro SD card slot on the tablet, which supports upto 1 TB of storage. Spoiler alert, there is no SIM card slot here, I share my opinions on this in the performance section. Display Perhaps the most important aspect of a tablet is its display. The more common use case for a tablet is content consumption, and Redmi has taken care of it. The massive screen size, colour accuracy, and generally favourable HDR results in the beautiful image output. The cherry on top is that Redmi Pad supports HD content for OTT apps like Prime Video and Netflix. So, there are no major compromises on the visual quality. Watching Andor on Disney+ Hotstar was fun on the Redmi Pad. The space battles, chase sequences and low-light shots all looked great. This surprised me, considering darker frames didn’t have a milky tint to them despite it being a budget LCD screen. The screen is also great for reading, especially with the right weight and design. I surfed through multiple web pages and read books on the tablet, the experience of which was satisfying. Redmi Pad has a peak brightness of 400 Nits which is apt for a tablet. The screen can get really bright indoors. But it might look underwhelming on a bright day if you plan on taking it to a picnic and watching something there. A hit and a miss is the keyboard on the Redmi Pad. I have never been comfortable typing on a tablet; unfortunately, Redmi Pad couldn’t change that either. The situation improves if you put it flat on a table and type. But punching the screen while holding it upright is a task. Hence I avoided typing notes here and mostly relied on voice prompts. A solution to this is using a compatible Bluetooth keyboard with the tablet. I, however, would suggest using a laptop to save time. Another point to note is the lack of a bundled stylus with the Redmi Pad. This is not a surprise since the competition in this price bracket also skips it. However, the tablet does work with 3rd party stylus’ available in the market. I would like to point out that the auto-brightness feature feels choppy on the Redmi Pad. It usually misses out on adjusting the brightness according to the frame on the tablet. Forcing me to shut it off altogether. I feel this can be taken care of with an OTA update. Redmi Pad 5’s display supports a max refresh rate of 90Hz. Which I found to be useful for both reading and gaming. My only gripe with the display is the lack of an adaptive refresh rate. The speaker set-up here is fairly loud and provides even sound distribution. In my experience, the speakers here felt louder than the ones on Xiaomi Pad 5. They do retain a certain amount of oomph to them and also retain details in the audio at low to mid-volume levels. The detail might get lost at higher volumes, but if you are watching something with your peers, you won’t complain. User Experience Redmi Pad 5 runs on Android 12 out of the box paired with MiUI. As we observed on the Xiaomi Pad 5, the MiUI skin here is optimised to work for a tablet. For instance, you won’t find an app drawer by default; instead, the apps remain on the home screen. And since then, it has been my primary device for setting up calendars. A general consumer might rarely use it, but it’s always better to have a feature of this nature on board. Over the years, Xiaomi has refined the MiUI, and this product keeps up with the tradition. There is no unnecessary bloatware on the tablet, a surprising sight. It’s clean and easy on the eyes as well. The animations are classic Xiaomi, but I am not complaining since they look good on this screen. However, there is one area where the Redmi tablet suffers from the same problem as the Xiaomi Pad 5. The lack of a fingerprint sensor. The Redmi tab uses face unlock or pin, but it is not a fancy mechanism. It employs the front camera to unlock, and as expected, it doesn’t work 100% of the time. And I found myself punching in my password more often than not. Performance Redmi Pad 5 runs on MediaTek Dimensity G99 SoC. Indeed a fresh chipset in the tablet space, it delivers a fiery performance on the tablet. In my six days of usage, I am yet to see lags or ugly app crashes. The variant with me packs in 6GB of RAM, which is more than enough to handle the applications on board. Considering most of them are, in fact, OTT apps. But beyond that, switching between web pages or multi-tasking with multiple apps in the background was also not a problem. The RAM is also able to hold applications for longer periods. I would generally hop between Netflix and Youtube. And even with the constant switching, I would land up on the exact frame where I had left. Now Redmi claims that the Redmi tab can handle gaming as well. I gave it a shot, and the experience was just about okay. Yes, the tablet can handle games like COD Mobile, with respectable graphic settings of HD. But the form factor, by default, limits the experience of truly enjoying a game. This isn’t a complaint but a fact, Tablets of this size are not meant for gaming. Or at least serious gaming. I also ran a Geekbench 5 computing benchmark test on the tablet to check the gaming prowess. Another fun game to play with my peers was Ludo. Yes, these are basic, boring games, but playing them on a big screen adds to the fun. The storage on my variant is 128GB. It is enough to store around 20+ movies in Full HD resolution across apps and games. If you are planning to go for the Redmi Tab, I would also suggest going with 128GB. Now the Redmi pad doesn’t have an option for a SIM card slot. Yes, there are certain benefits of having a SIM on board, primarily data connectivity. It allows you to watch or download content on the go. Yes, you can also make phone calls, but tablets have never been the best option to dial up a number, in my opinion. To me, skipping on the option entirely shows the priority here. Redmi Pad has all the features to make it a content consumption device. Hence you can download all your movies or TV shows and go about your day. Also, I feel the majority of the usage for the Redmi Pad will be indoors. This doesn’t mean skipping the SIM card slot on Xiaomi Pad 5 was justified. Before closing this section, it’s important to talk about battery life. The Redmi Pad features an 8000 mAh battery. And in all fairness, it is very difficult to kill it. For the last five days, it is my primary device to watch content, and I have plugged it in only twice. If you are a light user, the mileage can come up to 3 days. The tablet supports 18W fast charging but considering it is a big cell, it takes about two and a half hours for a 0-100% charge. Camera Cameras are never a strong point in a budget tablet, and the case here is no different. The shots lose out on details with the colours generally oversaturated. The performance does improve a bit in natural lighting conditions, but in no means are they worthy of being posted on your social media. The primary camera can record 1080P videos at 30fps. The footage lacked detail, and the colour tones were warmer. However, the audio quality was clear. All’s not bad here, though. The camera app comes with an in-built scanner which can be used to scan documents. Considering we do use our tablets to store files and documents, this comes in handy. The front camera is an 8MP sensor as well. The images also lack detail, and the colours are cooler. Verdict Circling back to the title of this review, the Redmi Pad is indeed the tablet for the masses. Aggressively priced and packed in just about the right features you seek in an entertainment device. If you are looking for a tablet to watch content on strictly, then this can be a great choice. It’s a good alternative for kids or students to watch videos or for home studies. However, if you are a creative looking for a device for editing pictures or creating illustrations, then this isn’t the right choice for you.

While the Poco X2 is not a true successor to the Poco F1, it is a sign of life which should be enough for its fans. Poco X2: Price The Poco X2 starts at a price of ₹15,999 which puts it in direct competition with , Realme X2, Xiaomi’s own Redmi K20 and Redmi Note 8 Pro. The base variant of the Poco X2 comes with 6GB of RAM, which adds bonus points in its favour when compared to the Realme X2 which starts with 4GB of RAM. Poco X2: Design and build quality

 One of the important considerations while buying a phone is its design and build quality. Most budget smartphones now offer decent design and build quality - turning them into basic needs rather than premium features. While the Poco F1 displayed its budget credentials with its plastic build, the Poco X2 shows no such signs. The phone feels solid to hold and looks premium without . squeaky corners. It is covered in glass on the front as well as the back. An unfortunate side-effect of the glass back is that it is slippery, so you might want to use a skin or a case. The back of the phone sports a glossy design and has a circular design around the camera module, which adds a bit of a flair to the otherwise understated looks. Poco X2: Display quality

 The display is one of the most hyped features of the Poco X2, and you might wonder why. Although raw power is still important, most smartphones are now powerful enough. Understandably, companies have now turned their focus to other areas like the display quality. With the X2, Poco is kicking it up a notch with a 120Hz refresh rate display. What does this mean in lay terms? Well, the Poco X2’s display is super smooth. It refreshes 120 times per second while most smartphone displays refresh only 60 times per second. This has an immediate effect on the overall smoothness of user interface elements and animations. For example, scrolling is a lot smoother on the Poco X2 when compared to a regular smartphone. However, not all third-party apps support high refresh rates, in which case the phone will use the regular 60Hz refresh rate. Still, we expect this to improve in the near future as higher refresh rates become more common. Other than that, we also found the display to be bright enough to use in direct sunlight. Poco has used a high-quality display on the Poco X2 and there’s nothing to complain about. Poco X2: Performance While the Poco F1 was powered by a flagship Qualcomm 845 chipset, the Poco X2 uses Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G, which is a mid-range chipset. However, that does not mean the Poco X2 is slower. We tested the 8GB model with 256GB storage. In our testing, we did not come across any performance issues. The phone performed just fine while playing popular games like Call of Duty: Mobile and PUBG Mobile. Ample memory and fast storage remove any performance bottlenecks, too, so the overall experience is very smooth. In terms of battery life, the Poco X2 easily lasted us for an entire day with regular usage – this includes social media, messaging, calls, watching videos and gaming. There are multiple factors which help the Poco X2’s battery life – the chipset is efficient, the battery is a massive 4,500mAh unit and MIUI prevents apps from wasting too much power. Poco has also bundled a massive 27W fast charger, which charges the Poco X2 from 0% to 100% in less than 1.5 hours. Poco X2: Software The Poco X2 runs on MIUI 11 which is based on Android 10, so you have the latest version of MIUI as well as Android. As of writing this review, Poco has also pushed out the latest security update, which is a positive sign. Overall, MIUI 11 has a wide range of useful features. Xiaomi has tweaked its custom skin extensively over the past few years to add a lot of value, so you don’t have to download a third-party app for many of the features. Another important aspect of the Poco X2 is that it doesn’t have any ads across the interface. Xiaomi generally pushes ads on its phones running on MIUI, but Poco smartphones use a slightly tweaked version that removes these ads. Then being said, the Poco X2 does come with some third-party apps pre-installed, but you can easily uninstall them. You can also disable most of the functions of the built-in security app if you don’t like them, which is a good thing. Poco X2: Cameras

 The Poco X2 has a total of six cameras – four on the back and two on the front. Let’s talk about the cameras on the back first. The Poco X2 is one of the first few phones to come with a brand new 64MP Sony IMX 686 sensor, which succeeds the highly popular 48MP sensor from Sony. The 64MP main camera is assisted by an 8MP ultrawide camera, a 2MP macro and a 2MP depth shooter. Essentially, you have a camera for every situation. In the real world, the Poco X2 performs exceedingly well for the price. Daylight shots capture details effortlessly with good colour reproduction. Ultrawide angle and macro shots take some effort, and they’re not always great, but that’s okay since you will be using the primary camera most of the time. On the front, the Poco X2 has a 20MP selfie camera with a 2MP depth sensor. The addition of an extra camera on the front allows the Poco X2 to capture some really good portrait shots that belie the price of the phone. The Poco X2 does struggle a bit in low-light conditions, but Night mode does a decent job of capturing enough details. All things considered, though, the Poco X2 does very well in terms of camera performance. Verdict Poco X2 is one of the best budget smartphones that you can buy right now. It has a lot of things going for it – the build quality, great display, an adequately powerful chipset, ample memory and storage, great battery life and surprisingly good camera performance. There’s little to complain about. Yes, the circle around the camera module was not necessary, but the phone will likely be in a case, which removes this issue out of the equation. The other problem that could hamper the Poco X2 is the flash sales model – Poco is currently selling the phone in weekly flash sales on Flipkart. You will have to be fast enough to purchase the phone when it goes on sale at 12PM today or wait for the next weekly sale. Poco X2 review: Poco makes a super-smooth comeback

 Mumbai-based <keyword id="3212715" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indus-OS">Indus OS</keyword>, creator of the world's first regional operating system, has left behind <keyword id="6354427" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Apple">Apple</keyword> and <keyword id="10387" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword> to take the second spot in the Indian smartphone operating system market — a first for a local software maker. 
 According to data from Counterpoint Research with ET, Indus OS had a 5.6% share in the total smartphone market during January-March, ahead of Apple's <keyword id="75489" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="IOS">iOS</keyword> which was at no. 5 with 2.5% share and Microsoft's Windows which had a share of 0.3% — same as Samsung's Tizen OS izen OS - at no. 7. 
 "We're adding close to half a million activations every month and we expect to double this within the next six months," said Indus OS chief executive officer Rakesh Deshmukh. "We have targeted 100 million customers by 2018," he added. The company which started putting its OS in <keyword id="71696" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Micromax">Micromax</keyword> smartphones about nine months ago, aims to put its OS in one in every six phones sold in the country by 2017. 
 Indus OS is available on 25 models <keyword id="6355645" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="android">Android</keyword> still leads the Indian smartphone market with 83.8% share for the first quarter of the year, during which 24.8 million devices were sold. Indus OS is present on 1.4 million of these phones. After Android and Indus, Chinese smartphone maker 
Xiaomi's has taken the No 3 position with a 4.1% share held by its MIUI operating system, while Cynaogen OS - used by Micromax's subsidiary YU Televentures on five models - is at No 4 with a 2.8% share of the market. 
 India has about 300 million internet users, which can potentially rise to 500 million within this year as per telecom minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, but not all are comfortable using English for all transactions. As internet companies ike <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> and Facebook look to add more users which will come from tier III and IV cities and from rural India, most companies recognise the need to have local language support to attract these users. 
 
Indus OS, which raised $5 million in a series A funding from investors led by Omidyar Network in January, has larger reach than Google's own stock Android OS used on Android One phones, which is only available on about 1.2 million phones, data added. 
 
Quick growth in the regional operating system can be attributed to the target segment it addresses, that includes millions of people that do not know English and prefer using their local language not only to converse but also as in their smartphones. 
 
The OS has patented regional keyboards that support 12 languages and are capable of translating messages written in a local language to English with a left swipe and transliterating it by swiping right. It also has a local app called App Bazaar, allowing users to download apps in native languages, without requiring them to use email IDs or paying by credit cards. 
 
"Over 90% of the users have activated App Bazaar and 75% use it on a monthly basis," Deshmukh said, and added that the company was in advance stages of talks with two other handset brands to extend partnership for the local language based OS.
