Gaming: What to expect from the Indian gaming and e-sports industry in 2022

Riding on more than 500 million gamers across mobile, PC and Cloud gaming platforms, <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>'s gaming market has likely reached $2.6 billion in revenue this year which is expected to quadruple to $8.6 billion by 2027, a new report showed on Thursday. The country now has about 120 million paid gaming users with at least $20 revenue per user, according to the report by <keyword id="10412751" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lumikai" source="Orion">Lumikai</keyword>, a gaming and interactive media venture capital fund. With 15 billion downloads, India was the world's largest consumer of mobile games in FY22. "India crossed half a billion gamers in FY22, up from 450 million the year prior. Industry growth is expected to be fuelled by a rapidly increasing gamer base, higher conversion to paid users, and increasing sophistication of Indian gamers," said Justin Shriram Keeling, Founding General Partner, Lumikai on the sidelines of the India Game Developers Conference (IGDC) Summit in Hyderabad. In FY22, mid-core games (like BGMI which is now banned and Free Fire) were the fastest growing gaming category, achieving growth of 32 per cent, grossing combined revenues of $550 million. According to the report, Nearly 48 per cent of gamers spend money on mid-core games and 65 per cent of paying gamers claim they have engaged in in-app purchases at least once. Indian gaming companies are on track to raise $513 million for the calendar year. Gaming sector funding is up 380 per cent from 2019 and up by 23 per cent from 2020. "Web3 emerged as an increasingly popular technology in games, with 30 per cent of 450 Indian Web3 companies operating in gaming. Web3 games in India have raised $400 million in funding (2019-22)," the findings showed. India-based content is growing in popularity with 80 per cent of gamers showing a proclivity to play games based on Indian intellectual property. "The number of female gamers in India is on the rise. Male: female ratio of surveyed gamers yielded a 60:40 ratio, equally split between metro and non-metro cities," the report noted. "The last 28 months have been watershed years in terms of attracting VC investment of over $2.6 billion in the Indian gaming landscape. This sustained momentum should further drive entrepreneurial ambition and innovation in the Indian gaming industry," said Salone Sehgal, Founding General Partner, Lumikai. While only three games were banned in June, the second batch in September put a ban on 35 games. It would be under 10% on an overall basis. Larger growth has been due to people staying indoors during the lockdown. We do see the surge sustained. We have a lot of promotions and loyalty initiatives within our digital products to retain our consumers even if new opportunities or other older products come back into the market. JetSynthesys Inc is our platform for global growth and we would like to see our international base growing at least 100% in the next year. We should see a lot of local players leveraging the opportunity and coming up with new games with local flavour. As far as Rummy is concerned, it is a highly local card game and truly Indian, family card game mostly played in India and amongst Indian Families. So that we never faced any competition from chinese players. The shift due to such events, usually are secular and are sustainable based on user experience in respective platforms. Obviously you can’t build a game now, so only if someone was in an advanced stage of development or had a ready product, would seek to maximise most. However, I also feel there are options of other global games like freefire. So Indian developers need to focus on quality because competition is still global. The growth will sustain but the most important factor is quality. So the ban is helping in creating trials / giving developers an opportunity. However if the game is not good or cannot develop traction, the it's a big opportunity lost. In the casual/mass gaming segment, Chinese apps hardly occupied any space. In the esports genre, pretty significant. I might say almost 40 - 50 % tournaments were happening via PubG. According to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, PUBG has been banned along with the other apps under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, on grounds that they engage in activities which are prejudicial to the sovereignty and integrity of India, defense of India, the security of the state and public order. As of May, Tencent’s PUBG had been downloaded 34.2 million times of which India accounted for 35.8% — 12.24 million installs, according to data provided by Sensor Tower. It has seen a global revenue gain of $1.3 billion, which is nearly Rs 22,457 crore with the highest number of downloads in India. The gaming industry in India is also at its peak right now. As per ‘The Power of Mobile Gaming in India,’a report released by the Mobile Marketing Association (MMA) and Kantar IMRB in association with POKKT, the mobile gaming industry in India is projected to reach $934 million in 2022 and the number of gamers is expected to swell up to 368 million by 2022. While gamers took to social media to mourn the loss of the game, experts are rejoicing at the government’s decision. They said that there are plenty of fish in the sea to fill PUBG’s void and the move will only bring India-made games to the forefront.
