In the 2023 calendar year, the equity investments in real estate stood at $7.4 billion. Industry body CII and real estate consultant CBRE on Wednesday released a joint report titled 'Leading the Charge: Crafting the Skylines of Tomorrow' at the annual CII Realty 2024 conclave. Equity capital inflows touched $8.9 billion between January and September, registering a 46% year-on-year growth. "Overall equity investments in 2024 in the real estate sector are set to hit a new record surpassing $10 billion for the first time," the report said. With a resurgence in investment inflows in built-up office assets and a strong acquisition pipeline for land in the residential sector, the overall equity investments in 2024 would be in the $10-11 billion range. During January-September, institutional and collective vehicle investors accounted for nearly 40% of the overall investments. Developer companies led the total capital inflows with more than 41% share in this period. Domestic investors (predominantly developers) invested nearly USD 6 billion during the first nine months of the calendar year, dominating the overall capital inflows with an almost 65% share. In comparison, foreign investors contributed about $3.1 billion during the same timeframe. Notably, North American and Singaporean investors were the significant contributors, representing about 85% of all foreign capital inflows. Anshuman Magazine, Chairman &amp; CEO, India, South-East Asia, Middle East &amp; Africa, CBRE, said, "Projection for 2024 equity investments between $10-11 billion, highest-ever, underscores continued investor interest in the growing <keyword id="23870227" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="real-estate-market-in-India" source="keywords">real estate market in India</keyword>." With SEBI's SM-REIT framework, he said, smaller but high-quality assets in Tier-II markets would also present new avenues for strategic capital deployment. "We believe this regulatory support will add much-needed transparency, enabling a more diversified investment base and encouraging institutional participation across these markets," Magazine said. Going ahead, he said this growing diversification will not only solidify India's real estate sector but also pave the way for future growth across emerging asset classes.

Amidst the constituents of Nifty50, only 3 stocks advanced today, while 47 others saw declines. Aditya Gaggar, Director of Progressive Shares, highlights that almost all the sectors ended in the red, with PSU Banks and Realty being the major laggards. "The weak link of the markets, i.e., mid- and small-caps, tumbled by 2.61% and 3.92% and underperformed the frontline index. Considering the oversold conditions in the mid- and small-cap segments, a short-term bounce can be expected in the markets, which may push the index higher, but the upside seems to be capped at 24,670". Rajesh Bhosale, equity technical analyst at Angel One, cautions traders against taking long positions until there are clear signs of a bullish reversal. "The midcap space, in particular, saw a sharp decline, breaking below key support levels, signaling more pain ahead—bottom-fishing in this sector should be avoided for now," he added. Investor wealth worth Rs 8.98 lakh crore was wiped off the markets today, with the BSE m-cap dipping from Rs 453.65 lakh crore yesterday to Rs 444.66 crore today. Broader mid- and small-cap indices saw their worst losses since August, riding on the back of disappointing earnings and cautious management guidance for the upcoming quarters. As such, hefty profit-booking ensued to make the most of still elevated valuations. <h2>FIIs on a heavy selling spree</h2> The massacre in the markets comes amidst heavy offloading of stakes by FIIs (<keyword id="19932515" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-institutional-investors" source="keywords">foreign institutional investors</keyword>). Data suggests so far this month, FIIs have offloaded a staggering Rs 82,479.73 crore in Indian markets. DIIs (<keyword id="20234284" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="domestic-institutional-investors" source="keywords">domestic institutional investors</keyword>) have been trying to maintain some semblance and balance in the markets, having bought 77,402.11 crore worth of assets in the Indian markets. However, that has proved insufficient for maintaining the positive momentum of the markets. The last time Indian markets had witnessed such intense selling was in 2021–22, i.e., during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Data from NSDL suggests that during this period, FPIs had sold Rs 1,22,242 crore worth of assets in the Indian markets. Gaurav Garg, Research Analyst at Lemonn Markets Desk, highlights that mid- and small-caps bore the brunt of earnings disappointments, as these are also the segments most stretched on many valuation metrics. "Growth slowdown concerns, along with uncertainty on rate cut timing, act as a double whammy for equity markets, especially after recent inflation data surprised sharply to the upside," he added. Looking ahead, the markets will continue to focus on the earnings announcements. Investors will look to the RBI's monetary policy meeting minutes tomorrow and the HSBC Manufacturing, Services, and Composite PMI data on Thursday for further signals to act upon.

Experts noted that geopolitical pressure and the continued shift of foreign investment from India to China have added to the selling pressure on Indian equities. "Market has turned weak responding to negative cues from escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, massive FPI selling and concerns surrounding the election results due today. The most important trigger which pulled the Nifty 5.6 per cent down from the peak has been the sustained big FPI selling during the last six trading days" said V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Financial Services. In the sectoral indices, Nifty Private Bank led the gains with a surge of 0.55 per cent at the opening session, and Nifty Bank also rose by 0.5 per cent, while Nifty FMCG, Nifty Media, and Nifty Metal faced selling pressure. Elevated valuations in India and cheaper valuations for Chinese stocks have triggered this shift in FPI strategy. "The Nifty index on Monday closed at the crucial support level of 24,800, with momentum indicators in the oversold territory, which may trigger a temporary bounce. However, a weekly close below 24,800 could lead to further declines, potentially down to 24,000" said Varun Aggarwal, MD, Profit Idea. Other Asian markets also faced high selling pressure on Tuesday, with Hong Kong's Hang Seng index down by more than 7.5 per cent at the time of this report. Japan's Nikkei index was down by 1.21 per cent, while Taiwan's weighted index dropped by 0.76 per cent.

Foreign investors return to Indian stocks with net investment of Rs 4,897 crore this week

Amid the ongoing selling in the Indian stock markets, the growth in the demat accounts also declined in October, highlighted a report by ICICI Securities The report highlighted that after a strong four-month period where monthly additions to demat accounts exceeded 4 million, October 2024 saw a decline in new demat accounts. It also added that the total number of accounts added in October fell to 3.45 million, down from 4.36 million in September 2024. This dip breaks the streak of steady growth in demat accounts, suggesting a possible shift in <keyword id="20030258" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="investor-sentiment" source="keywords">investor sentiment</keyword> or market conditions. Among depositories, the Central Depository Services Limited (CDSL) maintained a strong lead in market share. Meanwhile, individual investor activity showed mixed trends in September 2024 across different market segments. The report stated that the number of individual investors actively trading in the National Stock Exchange's (NSE) cash market increased slightly. In September, 15.8 million individual investors traded at least once, marking a 1.9% increase from 15.5 million in August. Over the first half of the financial year (6MFY24), a total of 29.4 million individuals participated at least once in the cash market, compared to 30.7 million for the full FY24. However, participation in the equity derivatives segment saw a downturn. The number of individual investors trading at least once in a month on the NSE's equity derivatives segment dropped by 3.6 % in September, falling to 4.46 million from 4.66 million in August. For the first half of FY24, a total of 8.7 million individuals participated in the derivatives market, a decline from 9.6 million for the entire FY24. This decline indicates a reduced interest in derivative trading among individual investors, possibly due to increased volatility or changing market preferences. The report said, "A total of 29.4 million individuals have participated at least once in 6MFY24 vs. 30.7 million in FY24. Individual investors, who traded at least once in a month on NSE's equity derivatives segment, declined 3.6% MoM in Sep'24 to 4.46 million vs. 4.66 million in Aug'24". The dip in both new demat accounts and derivatives participation among individual investors suggests a cautious outlook among retail participants. As global economic conditions remain uncertain, domestic markets face volatility amid the continued selling by foreign investors.

New Demat account additions drop to 4-month low in October as market declines, notes report by ICICI Securities

Mumbai: The rupee fell sharply by 15 paise against the US dollar to 83.44 in early trade on Wednesday amid muted trends in the domestic equity markets. However, a decline in the dollar index and a marginal fall in the Brent crude index prevented further losses in the domestic unit, according to experts. At the interbank foreign exchange, the local unit opened at 84.38 -- down 9 paise from its previous close -- and then slid further to 84.44, registering a decline of 15 paise from its previous close. On Tuesday, the rupee pared its intra-day losses to settle flat at 84.29 against the US dollar. "The <keyword id="24182640" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-banking-liquidity" source="keywords">Indian banking liquidity</keyword> fell into deficit as industry players paid Rs 1.6-1.8 lakh crore as GST payment. This was after two months that liquidity has fallen into a deficit as the RBI also intervened into forex markets to defend the rupee weighing on liquidity conditions," Anil Kumar Bhansali, Head of Treasury and Executive Director, Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP, said. "The rupee may be in the broad range of 84.00 to 84.50 in the near term as markets await a slew of data from the US this evening," Bhansali added. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was down 0.15 per cent to 106.84. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, was marginally down 0.10 per cent to USD 72.74 per barrel in futures trade. Pabari further said that the RBI's vigilant stance will be critical in managing volatility, with interventions likely at key levels to maintain stability. "Given the factors, the USDINR pair appears to face resistance around the 84.50 level, with expectations of trading within a range of 83.80 to 84.50, leaning toward a downside bias," he said. On the global front, US Treasury Secretary nominee Scott Bessent's fiscal deficit reduction agenda capped US Treasury yields, Pabari said. The dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading higher by 0.28 per cent at 107.11. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, rose by 0.33 per cent to USD 73.25 per barrel in futures trade. In the domestic equity market, the 30-share equity benchmark Sensex jumped 167.76 points or 0.21 per cent to 80,277.61 points in early trade, while Nifty jumped 55.80 points or 0.23 per cent to 24,277.70 points. Markets regulator <keyword id="19901201" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sebi" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Sebi" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="Sebi">SEBI</keyword> has asked the <keyword id="20677983" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mutual-fund-industry" source="keywords">mutual fund industry</keyword> to proactively conduct stress tests, a key component of <keyword id="20383727" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="risk-management" source="keywords">risk management</keyword> for the financial sector, which will help strengthen the ecosystem, its whole-time member Ananth Narayan Gopalakrishnan said on Friday. The regulator's stress testing emphasizes the need to assess and manage liquidity risks, especially in small and midcap equity schemes. Speaking at a mutual fund event, Gopalakrishnan highlighted the importance of modelling stress scenarios not just for individual schemes or fund houses, but for the entire mutual fund ecosystem. "It is also important to model stress scenarios for the entire composite mutual fund ecosystem. I would strongly encourage the industry and <keyword id="20090036" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AMFI" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="AMFI" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="AMFI">AMFI</keyword> to take the lead and proactively conduct objective and credible industry wide stress tests. themselves," Gopalakrishnan said. He also emphasized the need to find better ways to communicate the risks associated with different mutual fund schemes. The SEBI official mentioned that while the current risk measurement system is straightforward and has had a significant impact, it doesn't fully capture the differences in risks among various investment schemes. According to him, many schemes are just labelled as high risk, even though they have different kinds of risks. The goal is to improve this system to better reflect those differences, while keeping it simple and easy to understand. One possible approach is to consider the portfolio's volatility and liquidity from stress tests to give a clearer picture. "While ensuring simplicity and ease of understanding remains a key objective, perhaps the underlying volatility of the portfolio along with the liquidity of the portfolio from stress tests could be used to provide better colour all around," he added. This comes at a time when the holdings of mutual funds by <keyword id="20234284" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="domestic-institutional-investors" source="keywords">Domestic Institutional Investors</keyword> (DIIs) and individuals have risen from about 54.3% of free float of all mid cap and small cap companies, as of March 2020 to 60.6% as of March 2024. Several fund houses have proactively stopped lump sum investments in some small-cap schemes and also capped the amount that can be invested through <keyword id="20675888" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="systematic-investment-plan" source="keywords">Systematic Investment Plan</keyword> (SIP) into small-cap schemes. He also highlighted the potential mismatch between the demand for paper and the supply of fresh paper coming into the ecosystem. Gopalakrishnan said the industry can make more progress in streamlining operations and improving efficiency for investors. "At a time when instantaneous fund transfers have become ubiquitous in our country, perhaps we should look to improve our internal processes and the security settlement ecosystem, to ensure that funds are passed on to investors on the day of the settlement itself, rather than a day after or two days after," he added. Over the last few years, the mutual fund industry has made impressive strides, and is now playing a crucial role in channeling financial savings towards risk capital formation. This was driven by stable macros, increased formalization, robust corporate earnings, digitisation and user friendly access. Moreover, the number of mutual fund investors has grown significantly from about 2 crore as of March 2019 to nearly 4.7 crore as of June 2024, an impressive compounded annual growth rate of 18% during that period. Gopalakrishnan mentioned that several exciting initiatives are in the works, developed with input from all stakeholders. These include a proposed low-ticket SIP, further breaking down regular SIPs into smaller, more accessible units (sachetisation and tokenization), and the introduction of "mutual funds lite" regulations. These new regulations will simplify rules for passively managed funds, reducing the compliance burden and encouraging competition and innovation. Additionally, a new class of higher-risk schemes is proposed for investors with a greater capacity to handle risk.

Smaller stocks have emerged as markets' favourites so far this year, giving big returns to investors amid optimism over the country's macroeconomic fundamentals and surge in <keyword id="22447586" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="domestic-liquidity" source="keywords">domestic liquidity</keyword>. Till July 16 this year, the BSE midcap gauge has jumped 10,984.72 points or 29.81%, while the smallcap index has surged 11,628.13 points or 27.24%. In comparison, the BSE 30-share benchmark Sensex has rallied 8,476.29 points or 11.73% so far this year. "The primary reason for the outperformance of midcap and smallcap stocks is the surge in domestic liquidity. A substantial amount of domestic money is flowing into these segments through mutual funds, portfolio management services (PMS), and direct investments," said Sunil Nyati, Managing Director, Swastika Investmart Ltd. We are currently in a structural bull market, where midcap and smallcap stocks tend to outperform, he noted. "While largecap stocks have also performed well, they have lagged behind midcap and smallcap stocks due to selling by <keyword id="19932515" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-institutional-investors" source="keywords">foreign institutional investors</keyword> (FIIs)," Nyati added. Stock markets are closed today on account of Muharram. Experts said equity markets are experiencing a prolonged bull run, and it is during this time that the midcap and smallcap segments tend to outshine their larger counterparts. "We are currently in a <keyword id="22447587" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-bull-market" source="keywords">global bull market</keyword> led by the US, while our market is outperforming other emerging markets due to strong fundamentals and abundant domestic liquidity. "Although there are valuation concerns, particularly in the midcap and smallcap segments, the large-cap space still has room for further upside. Furthermore, foreign institutional investors have now shifted to a buying mood after aggressively selling in the first half of 2024," Nyati said. The BSE midcap gauge hit its all-time high of 48,175.21 on July 16 this year, while the smallcap index reached its lifetime peak of 54,617.75 on July 8. The BSE benchmark hit its record high of 80,898.3 on July 16. "The outperformance of midcap and smallcap indices compared to the Sensex this year can be attributed to sector-specific strengths in technology, healthcare, and consumer goods, coupled with their lower valuations and higher growth potential in a booming economy," said Arvinder Singh Nanda, Senior Vice President, Master Capital Services Ltd. The midcap index tracks companies with a market value that is on average one-fifth of blue-chips, while smallcap firms are almost a tenth of that universe. "There is some froth in the midcap and smallcap space, and the risk of a correction exists. However, timing this correction is challenging amid the current flood of liquidity. While there is no immediate trigger for a correction, any policy changes or earnings disappointments could potentially serve as catalysts," Nyati said. The market is likely to continue its rally, provided there are no negative surprises from the upcoming Budget, he noted. "Clear signs of impending rate cuts in the US could lead to aggressive FII inflows into emerging markets like India, further boosting our market," Nyati added. According to analysts, smaller stocks are generally bought by local investors, while overseas investors focus on blue-chips or large firms. Experts said active participation from domestic investors has played a big role in pushing the broader market counters. According to Nanda, the future trajectory of midcap and smallcap indices depends on several factors, including economic conditions, corporate earnings performance, investor sentiment, and global market dynamics. "While the current rally suggests strong momentum driven by sectoral strengths and <keyword id="19933340" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="investor-optimism" source="keywords">investor optimism</keyword>, corrections can occur due to profit-taking, changes in market sentiment, or external shocks," Nanda added.

The ongoing rally is not restricted to just bitcoin but also extended to Solana and XRP, which gained 10.85% and 59.02%, respectively, over the last 7 days. But does this mean that good times are coming for <keyword id="19991358" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-markets" source="keywords">Indian markets</keyword> as well? Apurva Sheth, Head of Market Perspectives &amp; Research, SAMCO Securities, notes that bitcoin is a proxy for risk-taking in the markets. Bitcoin moving up means the risk appetite of investors is rising. Conversely, if it falls, then investors prefer safety." Both Nifty and Sensex have lost over 5% each over the last month. FIIs (<keyword id="19932515" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-institutional-investors" source="keywords">foreign institutional investors</keyword>) have also been scrambling out of Indian markets, having withdrawn Rs 1,14,445.89 crores during October 2024 and offloading Rs 34,348.30 crore so far in November. During trade today, Nifty and Sensex remained in red, with Nifty down by 0.74% and Sensex down by 0.6%. DIIs (domestic institutional investors) have been trying to keep the market afloat in both October and November, pumping in Rs 31,636.77 crore in Indian markets in November so far. Last month, DIIs infused Rs 1,07,254.68 crore in the Indian markets. According to an NSE report, by the end of the previous quarter, FPIs holding in NSE-listed companies stood at 36.3%, despite the seventh consecutive quarterly decline. Previously, FIIs holding in listed companies had hit a record high of 39.9% in December 2021. In contrast, DIIs are increasingly making headway into the Indian markets. Active Domestic Mutual Funds (DMFs) have been increasing their investments in the NSE-listed companies. Their ownership in these companies has risen from 12.4% in December 2021 to 15.7% as of September 30, 2024. Banks and insurance companies have also expanded their market share. Their ownership in NSE-listed companies has grown from 8.8% three years ago to 11% as of pr quarter.
