In the last two years, there has been a rapid rise in scams in India and a lot of people have lost their hard-earned money after trusting strangers for financial advice. Be it a fraudulent app, being added to a shady WhatsApp group, or receiving phone calls from strangers that sound too good to be true, many cases have come to light. Now, in a new incident, a doctor from Thane, Maharashtra, was misled by three Karnataka-based suspects who promised earnings via a municipal contract to supply medical equipment, costing him ₹3.84 crore. Despite investing over a three-year period, he saw no returns and reported the crime to the Naupada police, who have registered a case but made no arrests. Thane doctor tricked by false municipal contract According to a PTI report, a 39-year-old doctor in Thane, Maharashtra was deceived by three men from Karnataka. These fraudsters offered him lucrative returns through a supposed municipal contract for supplying medical equipment. Convinced by the promise of reliable profits, the doctor began investing heavily in December 2020, making significant contributions until March this year. The doctor’s substantial investment – totalling ₹3.84 crore – was made over multiple transactions from December 2020 and March this year, in anticipation of high returns that never materialised. Suspicion finally arose after the doctor had seen no profits despite his repeated investments. Recognising he may have been defrauded, he reached out to the Naupada police station, who registered a case under charges of cheating. While no arrests have been made so far, authorities have launched an investigation to track down the perpetrators and recover the funds if possible. A police official told PTI, "The man approached police after he did not get profits or any return on investment. We have registered a case of cheating but have not arrested anyone." Ahmedabad gynaecologist duped in <keyword id="21361161" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="stock-market-scam" source="keywords">stock market scam</keyword> In a similar incident, a gynaecologist from Ahmedabad lost ₹1.1 crore to a scam that began with a social media advertisement. Attracted by the potential for substantial stock market returns, the doctor engaged with a group promising expert tips and was subsequently added to a WhatsApp group where members shared investment insights. Through this group, he was introduced to a web link for stock and IPO investments, along with an application that required his banking details and identification documents. A PTI report revealed that the doctor’s initial investment of ₹50,000 yielded a profit of ₹10,000, which he successfully withdrew. This initial success encouraged him to make larger investments, transferring ₹1.1 crore through multiple transactions in pursuit of higher gains. When he later attempted to withdraw his funds, he was unexpectedly asked to pay 20% of his total profits. After refusing this demand, he was removed from the WhatsApp group and realised the extent of the deception. He contacted Cybercrime police in February, and after months of waiting, a formal case was registered against unknown suspects under charges of breach of trust and cheating, alongside provisions of the <keyword id="20003647" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="information-technology-act" source="keywords">Information Technology Act</keyword>.

Social media has gotten so bad that America's top doctor is intervening

<keyword id="20114810" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="West-Bengal-chief-minister" source="keywords">West Bengal Chief Minister</keyword> <keyword id="19909056" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mamata-Banerjee" source="keywords">Mamata Banerjee</keyword> has written another letter to <keyword id="19898052" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Prime-Minister-Narendra-Modi" source="keywords">Prime Minister Narendra Modi</keyword>, expressing concern over the lack of response to her previous communication regarding the rape and murder of a PG <keyword id="22760814" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="trainee-doctor" source="keywords">trainee doctor</keyword>. In her letter, dated August 30, Banerjee emphasised the gravity of the situation and urged for prompt central intervention, highlighting the inadequacy of the reply received from the Union Minister of <keyword id="20086338" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Women-and-Child-Development" source="keywords">Women and Child Development</keyword>. The letter reads, "No reply was received from your end on such a sensitive issue. However, a reply has been received from the Minister of Women and Child Development, Government of India (vide their No. 1/RESC/HMWCD/2024 dated 25th August 2024), which barely addresses the gravity of the issue raised in my letter. I am of the view that the seriousness of the subject and its relevance to society have not been adequately appreciated in this generic reply." The letter was posted on her social media handle, X. In response to Union Minister Annapurna Devi's allegations regarding the state government's failure to implement essential safety measures for women and children, including Fast Track Special Courts (FTSCs), CM Mamata stated that the state government has approved 10 exclusive POCSO FTSCs, while 88 FTSCs and 62 POCSO-designated Courts are functioning with complete state funding. The letter mentioned, "Moreover, I would also refer to some of the initiatives in this area that our State has already undertaken, which appear to have been overlooked in the reply. Regarding Fast Track Special Courts (FTSCs), 10 exclusive POCSO Courts have been approved by the State Government. In addition to this, 88 FTSCs and 62 POCSO-designated Courts are functioning throughout the State with complete State funding. Monitoring and disposal of cases are entirely in the hands of the Courts." Highlighting the issue of appointing Presiding Officers in FTSCs, she further stated that this process requires examination and action from the Government of India, which, according to her, needs PM Modi's intervention. "As per Central Government guidelines, only retired Judicial Officers can be posted as Presiding Officers in FTSCs, but the Hon'ble High Court has observed that, in view of the severity of the cases, permanent Judicial Officers need to be appointed. This requires examination at the level of the Government of India and appropriate action thereafter, for which your intervention would be necessary. Moreover, Helpline Nos. 112 and 1098 are functioning satisfactorily in the State. Additionally, Dial 100 is also extensively used in emergency situations," the letter added. Urging for central <keyword id="20082569" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="legislation" source="keywords">legislation</keyword> and exemplary punishment for heinous crimes, the West Bengal CM expressed hope for very considered attention from PM Modi. Mamata Banerjee mentioned in her letter, "I would reiterate and earnestly request that a stringent Central legislation and exemplary punishment for heinous crimes of rape/rape and murder be considered, with a mandatory provision for the disposal of cases within a specific timeframe by the trial authorities. I hope this matter would receive very considered attention at your kind end in the interest of our society at large." On August 26, Union Women and Child Development Minister Annapurna Devi criticised the West Bengal government for its failure to implement essential safety measures for women and children in the state. In a letter written to West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, the Union Minister stated that 123 Fast Track Special Courts (FTSCs) were allocated to the state, but none of them are functional yet. Earlier, on August 22, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging the central government to bring in central legislation and set up fast-track courts for "sensitive" issues to ensure a speedy trial. Mamata, in the letter, mentioned that such "sensitive" issues need to be addressed comprehensively through stringent central legislation prescribing exemplary punishment against the perpetrators of such heinous crimes. The Bengal Chief Minister suggested the setting up of "fast-track special courts" to deal with such cases, which require a speedy trial. This development comes after the trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9.

"No reply received, hope this matter receives considered attention": CM Mamata writes to PM Modi again on rape-murder case

He emphasized that everyone knows the 'Services' Department falls directly under the LG of Delhi, making it the responsibility of the Lieutenant Governor to fill these vacancies. The Health Minister presented letters he had written earlier to the LG informing him about these vacancies. He stated that after taking over as the Health Minister of Delhi in March 2023, he wrote his first letter to the LG on April 19, 2023, informing him of a shortage of 292 General Medical Duty Officers (GDMOs) and 234 Specialists in Delhi Government hospitals, and appealed for these vacancies to be filled as soon as possible. No action was taken to fill these vacancies. Instead, doctors holding high positions in Delhi Government hospitals through <keyword id="22672127" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Central-Health-Services" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Central Health Services" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Central Health Services">Central Health Services</keyword> (CHS) were also recalled by the Central Government, removing them from Delhi Government hospitals.

Delhi Health Minister accuses LG Vinai Saxena of not filling vacant posts in Delhi hospitals

In a twist that sounds straight out of a sci-fi thriller, some of the UK's most beloved TV <keyword id="20000183" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="doctors" source="keywords">doctors</keyword> are now finding their faces hijacked by <keyword id="19899640" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AI" source="keywords">AI</keyword> to hawk dubious products online. According to a startling report by The BMJ, these digital doppelgangers are being used to peddle everything from miracle cures for high blood pressure and diabetes to hemp gummies. The phenomenon, known as deepfaking, uses artificial intelligence to map a real person’s likeness onto another video. The results can be uncannily realistic — so much so that a <a href="https://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.chb.2023.107917">recent study</a> found up to half of viewers couldn't distinguish <keyword id="19896285" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="deepfakes" source="keywords">deepfakes</keyword> from authentic videos. Some of the <keyword id="22457749" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="medical-influencers" source="keywords">medical influencers</keyword> targeted have amassed millions of followers with large spheres of influence, such as Hilary Jones, <keyword id="20264833" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="michael-mosley" source="keywords">Michael Mosley</keyword> and <keyword id="22457750" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rangan-chatterjee" source="keywords">Rangan Chatterjee</keyword>. While the study does not mention the following names, another podiatrist and influencer Dana Brems, aka <keyword id="22457751" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="footdocdana" source="Orion">FootDocDana</keyword> on Instagram, had recently expressed concern after deepfakes surfaced of the personality recommending a “ear-cleaning” product. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="110567448" title="Fake AI images now contributing to misinformation spread nearly as much as traditionally altered media: Research" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div>John Cormack, a retired doctor from Essex, partnered with The BMJ to uncover the extent of this digital deception. “The bottom line is, it's much cheaper to spend your cash on making videos than it is on doing research and coming up with new products and getting them to market in the conventional way,” Cormack explains. The proliferation of fake content featuring familiar faces is an inevitable side effect of our current AI revolution, says Henry Ajder, a deepfake technology expert. “The rapid democratisation of accessible AI tools for voice cloning and avatar generation has transformed the <keyword id="19898489" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fraud" source="keywords">fraud</keyword> and impersonation landscape.” The issue has reached such proportions that even the targeted doctors are fighting back. Hilary Jones, for instance, employs a social media specialist to search for and take down <keyword id="20197919" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="deepfake-videos" source="keywords">deepfake videos</keyword> misrepresenting his views. “Even if you do, they just pop up the next day under a different name,” Jones laments. Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram where many of these videos have been found, has promised to investigate. The <keyword id="19895346" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Calcutta-High-Court" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Calcutta High Court" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="Calcutta High Court">Calcutta High Court</keyword> on Thursday directed the <keyword id="19896633" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="CBI" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="CBI" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="CBI">CBI</keyword> to file a report by September 18 on detestable posts being made on social media regarding the <keyword id="22813393" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rape-murder-victim" source="keywords">rape-murder victim</keyword> of R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. The body of the on-duty trainee doctor was found in the seminar room of the state-run hospital on August 9, triggering nationwide outrage. The CBI is investigating the case from the second week of August on an order of the high court. The petitioner prayed in the PIL that the CBI be directed to investigate the <keyword id="22008077" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cyber-offences" source="keywords">cyber offences</keyword> in connection with the "unfortunate and brutal incident." The court asked the Additional Solicitor General Asok Kumar Chakrabarti, representing the central agency, whether it could find a way to block these types of posts. The division bench, presided by Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam, directed the joint director, CBI, Kolkata, to look into the grievance expressed by the petitioner with regard to the issue of such abominable <keyword id="20074678" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="social-media-posts" source="keywords">social media posts</keyword>. I also now have a digital mental health platform.My husband, a venture capital CEO and entrepreneur, and I share family responsibilities.<h2 id="707c1258-a45a-4d1b-95e9-9e67ec349457">I started my company because I could've used it myself</h2>After experiencing pregnancy, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/i-went-back-to-work-4-weeks-after-giving-birth-2024-10">postpartum anxiety</a>, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stillbirth-what-i-wish-i-knew-before-lost-pregnancy-2021-12">late-term pregnancy loss</a>, I realized the care I needed wasn't available to me, which fueled my mission of providing those on the path to parenthood the resources they need for their mental health.I met Emma Sugerman, who had also experienced a pregnancy loss, and we created <a target="_blank" href="https://www.mavidahealth.com/">Mavida Health</a> in April 2023. I know continuing to work is key to my happiness, and even though it's challenging, it makes me a better mother and partner.<h2 id="d56eb56b-2167-45dd-a2f2-a7ad1d8f73a0">Here's what a weekday looks like for me</h2><h3 id="fbc13bad-d8f3-47b0-853b-4589f431fe62">5:30 a.m. - 6 a.m.:</h3>This time is precious — I try to meditate each morning for at least 10 minutes, do a quick workout every other day, and make myself matcha every morning.<h3 id="b0e8bad0-de34-4c5d-8b68-5610d3db0e88">6 a.m. - 8 a.m.:</h3>The kids (four, almost three, and four months old) wake up around 6 a.m. My husband keeps East Coast hours, so by 6 a.m., he's busy in his home office.My mom, who moved in with us during the pandemic because I worried about her safety and living alone, is extremely helpful. Our nanny also arrives around this time, helping wrangle our two toddlers and baby while I try to get ready and help them prepare for the day.Once our second child was born, we decided a nanny would be helpful for our family. Parenting is not an individual sport.<h3 id="6b867e7c-a20d-4cdc-a5ef-4289073c7792">8 a.m. - 8:30 a.m.:</h3>After breakfast, either my mother or I drop off the toddlers at school. The newborn stays home with our nanny.<h3 id="ec7d99c7-37a8-4e10-abb8-3d9e2713dd3f">9 a.m. - 12 p.m.:</h3>My husband and I work from home every weekday. My workday begins with meetings. I oversee all our providers, offering close supervision and support on their cases. I also focus on product updates and refining the member experience.<h3 id="8df79240-54c5-4433-9ad8-72ab4a0cee7e">12 p.m. - 1 p.m.:</h3>Lunchtime is a brief break from work, where I try to relax and spend time with my baby. It's my time to recharge and recenter.<h3 id="d203c4b3-e441-464b-beb7-cc815bcec4ea">1 p.m. - 5 p.m.:</h3>The afternoon is filled with more provider consultations, clinical research, creating social media content, or meetings. My husband picks the kids up from school.<h3 id="27b042ac-beb5-4820-96c5-4e222c78bf8f">5 p.m. - 7 p.m.:</h3>Dinner time is family time — I block my work calendar to be fully present during these hours. We eat together, talk about our day, and unwind.Our nanny leaves around this time, and my mom rests in her room. The evening usually involves playing with the toddlers and caring for the baby, but by this point, I'm pretty exhausted.I try to remind myself that these years will go by quickly. This is sometimes when I yearn for the days to be longer so I could spend more hours with the kiddos. Guilt tends to creep in, and I wish I had more to give.<h3 id="1cf989b4-869d-48f6-b2ec-cfd2a9975940">7 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.:</h3>Our baby goes down first, and then my husband and I put the toddlers to bed, usually with bedtime stories or some quiet time.<h3 id="25d878b7-7961-4f54-aaf0-2b8c87def575">8 p.m. - 10 p.m.:</h3>I might spend this time with my partner, catch up on a book, or relax. This is also when I sometimes lose track of good <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/sleep-hygiene">sleep hygiene</a> and end up scrolling through Instagram or watching reality TV. On an ideal night, I would prefer to do another 10-minute meditation, and I try when I can, but it's hard.There have been some very tough times, especially when our third child was born, but we also know it's the best time of our lives.<h2 id="6f990ed4-9b65-42ee-8dea-f89135fd0f0d">Communication and planning are essential</h2>My husband and I use shared calendars to keep track of our schedules, which helps us stay coordinated and avoid conflicts. We have occasional epic fails, like forgetting to leave on time to pick up our kids from school or camp.I know my husband doesn't feel guilty. I think it's partially because he's a man, but he also feels very comfortable with all of our different caretakers and that part of the work he does outside our home benefits our family and children.<h2 id="5806e438-54f7-4875-894f-f3a888237ca9">I'm not afraid to ask for help and set boundaries</h2>I don't hesitate to delegate tasks and ask for help. I couldn't have three children if I didn't have other adults in my home helping me mother my children as well as mothering me.I also have boundaries between work and family time. We have a rule not to check work emails while with our children. We've also created family traditions, like weekend outings, to make special memories together.<h2 id="18f4897c-e0e6-4f64-add4-ebde0d3c45d3">Making time for myself is important</h2>I try to meditate daily, journal when I remember to, and stick to an exercise routine that works for me, but I accept that things won't be perfect.There are days when everything feels chaotic, my house doesn't look Instagram-ready, and the balance feels off. Learning to let go of perfectionism and find joy in the moment has been key.My cofounder and my husband are my two critical partners. We each hold the other accountable. In an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://time.com/6994739/ai-behavior-change-health-care/">op-ed article Altman and Huffington wrote for Time</a>, they also cited healthcare costs and accessibility.Altman said he was surprised by how many people were willing to share information with large language models, or LLMs, the AI systems that power chatbots like <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/everything-you-need-to-know-about-chat-gpt-2023-1">ChatGPT</a> or Google's Gemini. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Dr. Vivek Murthy said social media was contributing to a mental-health "emergency."</li><li>He's calling for a surgeon general's warning label, which would require congressional action.</li></ul>The US surgeon general says social media should come with a warning label — similar to the ones that appear on cigarette packs.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/17/opinion/social-media-health-warning.html">In an op-ed for The New York Times</a>, Dr. Vivek Murthy said social media was contributing to an "emergency" mental-health crisis for young people, with increasing anxiety and depression symptoms and adolescents feeling worse about their bodies.The surgeon general's warning label would say that social media is "associated with significant mental health harms for adolescents," Murthy wrote, noting that such a label would require congressional action.Studies have found that tobacco warning labels can be effective, he wrote in the Times.Murthy — the nation's top doctor who <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vivek-murthy-biden-cabinet-confirmation-guns-2020-11">previously served in the Obama administration</a> and has crusaded against an American <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/there-is-no-loneliness-epidemic-mental-health-2024-4">loneliness epidemic</a> — issued a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/sg-youth-mental-health-social-media-advisory.pdf">separate advisory last year</a> in which he urged policy changes.The American Psychological Association has <a target="_blank" href="https://www.apa.org/topics/social-media-internet/youth-social-media-2024">issued its own advisories</a> about social-media use among teens, saying it's not "inherently beneficial or harmful to young people" — with their "pre-existing strengths or vulnerabilities" also playing a role in mental-health outcomes.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.apa.org/monitor/2023/09/protecting-teens-on-social-media">While there can be benefits</a>, younger brains tend to be more invested in "personalized feedback, praise, or attention from peers," the organization says, and have underdeveloped impulse control."Policies will not protect youth unless technology companies are required to reduce the risks embedded within the platforms themselves," the APA says.The legislation Murthy outlined would protect young people from online harassment and abuse, prevent data collection from kids, and restrict features like push notifications, autoplay, and infinite scrolling.These changes "remain the priority" over labeling, Murthy wrote.Murthy added in his op-ed that social-media platforms "must be required to share all of their data on health effects with independent scientists and the public" for safety audits and urged parents not to let their children access social media until after middle school."The moral test of any society," he said, "is how well it protects its children."
