<ul><li>Indians planning to study medicine in China may have to learn Mandarin language to enroll in MBBS programmes in the country. </li><li>The Ministry of Education (MoE) rolled out an official list of 45 universities in China which are qualified for an MBBS degree programme in English. </li><li>China opened its doors to foreign students in 2003, and has as many as 500,000 students. </li><li>In China, medical education costs nearly ₹300,000 to ₹500,000 for government-authorized universities.</li></ul>More Indians are opting to study in China, given the affordability of education as compared to the US and Australia. But those looking to gain medical degrees from the country, will now face a roadblock--of language. The government of China is allowing only 45 of its universities to teach MBBS in English. There are over 200 universities in the country offering medical courses. “It has been clearly mentioned by the Chinese MOE that teaching MBBS course under a bilingual (English/Chinese) model is strictly forbidden. The MOE has also informed that the list of universities will be regularly reviewed and updated in due course,” PTI <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/services/education/china-restricts-teaching-of-mbbs-in-english-to-45-colleges-amid-big-surge-of-students-from-india/articleshow/71482435.cms">reported</a> citing Indian Embassy. China opened its doors to foreign students in 2003, and now there are as many as 500,000 of them. As many as 23,000 Indian students enrolled in Chinese universities — and more than 21,000 of them opt for medicine. To avoid confusion among aspiring doctors, Indian Embassy removed the Chinese universities that do not offer courses in English from its website. However, the students who are presently enrolled in any university other than those listed by the government are learning Chinese language to get through the course. In China, medicine education costs nearly ₹300,000 to ₹500,000 for government-authorized universities. In India, the tuition costs can range anywhere between ₹1 million to ₹3 million. Indian medical students will now have to learn Mandarin to study in China

Toxicology experts will soon train doctors working in Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and district hospitals in <keyword id="13126" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="maharashtra" source="Orion">Maharashtra</keyword> and other places in the country about the protocols for diagnosis and treatment of farmers exposed to chemicals and pesticides, a medical expert has said. Toxicology as a subject is quite neglected in the medical curriculum, Dr Tejas Prajapati, a clinical medical toxicologist at the LG Hospital in Ahmedabad, said at a press conference on Wednesday after a symposium on 'Occupational health hazards in agriculture' held at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (<keyword id="40458" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="aiims" source="Orion">AIIMS</keyword>), Nagpur. Doctors at the PHCs are the first contact in the case of a patient exposed to pesticides and chemicals. They are already loaded with various other medical programmes and works and a case of such a medical emergency is immediately sent to higher centres and the "<keyword id="2284670" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="golden-period" source="Orion">golden period</keyword>" is lost, he noted. Wealthy Indians look to stable Caribbean investment programmes for wealth diversification

New Delhi, May 27 (IANSlife) More than 51 percent of women respondents say that Indian schools do not have a proper system to prepare teen and adolescent girls regarding the onset of menstrual periods. Nearly 60 percent women feel schools lack adequate facilities for girls to change and dispose of sanitary pads off, says a survey. Today is Menstrual Hygiene Day 2020 falling , and feminine hygiene brand Everteen had conducted the fifth edition of its annual Menstrual Hygiene Survey. The survey was conducted among nearly 7000 Indian women participating from various cities of India including Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Kolkata. Over 51 percent women respondents claimed that Indian schools do not have adequate systems to educate or mentally prepare teen and adolescent girls regarding the onset of menstrual periods. More than 95 percent women asserted that Indian school system should have some awareness programs to prepare girls on the subject. The survey also revealed that during adolescence, nearly 60 percent women did not have any prior knowledge about menstrual periods. In fact, as many as 38 percent women had first misinterpreted it as an injury or disease. In terms of infrastructure, almost 59 percent women felt that schools do not have adequate cleanliness of public toilets or facilities for girls to change and dispose sanitary pads off. Chirag Pan, CEO, PAN Healthcare, says, "Menstrual hygiene and wellness have been known issues in the Indian context. While there has been progress in recent years, it is imperative that we leverage our strength in the Indian value-based systems and inculcate the importance of good menstrual hygiene from the onset of puberty itself. Schools can and must play a pivotal role in bringing this paradigm shift through classroom education, awareness programs and focused infrastructure development." In workspaces too, 41 percent women felt their office needed better cleanliness and facilities to change and dispose sanitary pads off in toilets. The survey also suggests that the role that doctors can play in preventing gynecological problems is significantly downplayed due to the shame and guilt associated with menstrual cycles in Indian context. More than 50 percent women said they have had some gynecological infection or problem such as UTI, rashes, foul smell or itching during or after menstrual cycle in the past one year. Among these, 20 percent of women had such issues more than 3 times during the year. More than 64 percent women have faced irregularities in their period dates, out of which half have had to deal with it more than 3 times in a year. Ironically, only 37 percent of women said they consult a doctor in case or irregular periods, whereas 32 percent prefer to discuss it within the family and 30 percent just ignore it. Similarly, more than 54 percent women have had white discharge, but only 25 percent prefer to consult a doctor. As many as 56 percent women believe that menstruation is still perceived as a taboo in Indian society. Not surprisingly, then, more than 42 percent of women felt uncomfortable buying sanitary essentials from a shop or a chemist, especially when there were several other customers. Because of the guilt associated with menstrual cycle, 87 percent women admitted that they had to hide or secretly take their sanitary product for changing. Interestingly, more than three-fourth of the respondents said that menstruation would not have been such a taboo subject in the society if men had it too! Another key revelation from the survey shows that 53 percent women have used a public toilet more than 3 times at an office, mall or cinema hall to change sanitary product. Hariom Tyagi, CEO, Wet and Dry Personal Care,says, "Our survey shows that 75 percent women feel uncomfortable having to use public toilets to change sanitary products. Yet, more than 93 percent women still use sanitary napkins. By switching to better, modern-age menstrual hygiene methods (MHM) such as menstrual cups, women can reduce the number of times they have to change their sanitary product in a day. Many women have told us that using menstrual cups has greatly reduced their daily discomfort due to periods." The survey revealed that menstrual cups are now being used by 4 percent of the women, and their adoption has overtaken tampons by almost double. First-hand look into the day of a CXO The ‘industry-immersed’ curriculum will be led by the leaders to provide a hands-on learning experience. “Masters’ Union will run a CXO shadow programme that would enable students to have a first-hand look into a day of a CXO to experience how organizations are run and business decisions are made,” the institute said. The technology-focused business school aims to formulate an ‘internship style’ academic calendar which will entail boot camps in AI, blockchain, SAAS and cybersecurity. Each student will receive a one on one apprenticeship. “In medical schools, doctors teach students, practicing lawyers teach in law schools, but in business schools, faculty may not have experience with hands-on leadership in the industry. That’s a gap Masters’ Union addresses by getting CXOs, MDs and business leaders to teach and train students,” said Tathagata Dasgupta, founding master at MUSB and former chief data scientist at Viacom. A group of Indian veterans raise ₹300 crore to build a B-school where chief executives will teach

By Lalit K Jha Washington, Apr 24 () A US lawmaker has urged President Donald Trump to suspend the foreign workers programmes, including H-1B, as more than 26 million Americans have lost their job because of the coronavirus pandemic. In a letter to Trump, Congressman Paul Gosar sought additional suspension of the H-1B, H4, L1, B1, B2, Optional Practical Training Program, and further guest worker admissions in order to promote wages and opportunities for American workers during this period of rising unemployment. The letter, dated April 23, was released to the media on Friday, a day after Trump issued an executive order that suspended issuing of new Green Cards for the next 90 days. "At a time when more than 26 million Americans are out of work due to COVID-19, the very last thing we should be doing is authorising is additional foreign labor," Gosar said. Trump's proclamation is a solid step to ensure we put American workers first, but the Secretaries of State, Homeland Security and Labour must recommend the suspension of additional guest worker visas and programmes that undercut the American workforce, he said, adding, "There has never been a better time to truly put America first." On April 22, Trump issued the "Proclamation Suspending Entry of Immigrants Who Present Risk to the US Labor Market During the Economic Recovery Following the COVID-19 Outbreak." Section 6 of the proclamation requires the Secretaries of Labor, Homeland Security, and State to recommend additional measures to "ensure the prioritisation, hiring, and employment of United States workers." "I write to encourage consideration of "additional measures" by the Secretary of Labor, Secretary of Homeland Security, and Secretary of State, as described in Section 6 of the proclamation, within 30 days of the effective date to "ensure the prioritization, hiring, and employment of United States workers.," he said. In another letter, Congressman Josh Harder urged Congressional Select Committee on the Coronavirus Crisis to take action to protect medical professionals who hold H-1B visas, especially as these workers are essential to confront and combat the current epidemic. Harder is working on a bill to extend the 60-day grace period for an H-1B healthcare worker who loses his or her job to last for the duration of the Coronavirus crisis, so that even if their health center is struggling, they aren't forced to abandon the community they serve in the middle of a crisis. "I urge you to include my bill, which would solve this problem, in the next coronavirus relief package," Harder wrote. More than 90 per cent of the US population is presently under a stay-at-home order. Requiring people -- particularly healthcare workers -- to move, and in many cases use public transportation, during this time is irresponsible. It could put them and the wide range of other essential workers with whom they would have to interact with at an unnecessary risk, he argued. Immigrant doctors who are laid off because of budget shortfalls are required to find a new source of employment within two months or must leave the country. Many Community Health Centers have already been forced to lay off personnel, meaning doctors on specialty visas could be forced to leave the country. "With patient visits down, California health centers are losing about USD90 million a week. If trends continue, up to 77 health centers statewide may not be able to make payroll," said Golden Valley Health Centers Manager, Government Affairs, Yamilet Valladolid. "These shortfalls could have an impact on H-1B visa holders who currently practice medicine at these facilities. We're already short on providers -- we need to keep these folks here," he said. Doctors who are forced to return to their country of origin can return to the United States only after starting the visa application process from the beginning. The H-1B Visa programme, designed to allow immigrants with specialty skills to work in the United States, has also stopped expedited processing, likely meaning the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) will have a backlog once the country begins to return to normal, Harder said. New York, Jul 11 () Surgeons led by an Indian-origin doctor have performed a double-lung transplant on a second patient whose lungs were damaged by COVID-19, within a month after the same team conducted what is believed to have been the first such surgery in the US. The patient, an Illinois man in his 60s, spent 100 days on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), a life support machine that does the work of the heart and lungs. He received the transplant last weekend at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, the hospital said in a statement. "This procedure capped an extremely busy holiday weekend for our transplant team. We worked around the clock, performing multiple transplants on non-COVID patients before accepting new lungs for this COVID-19 survivor," said Dr Ankit Bharat, chief of thoracic surgery and surgical director of the Northwestern Medicine Lung Transplant Programme, who performed seven lung transplants in seven days. "Performing back to back lung transplants on such complex patients is demanding work and I'm extremely proud of our team's dedication. It's a testament to the infrastructure and expertise of Northwestern Medicine's Lung Transplant Programme," the Meerut-born doctor said. The patient contracted COVID-19 in late March and received the majority of his treatment at another health system before being transferred to Northwestern Memorial Hospital for consideration of a double-lung transplant. Within 72 hours of being listed, the life-saving procedure was performed on July 4. Before the patient's name was added to the transplant wait-list, he had to test negative for COVID-19. "Coincidentally, the transplant happened to be on the 100th day of ECMO support. Being on ECMO and separated from the ventilator allowed the patient to participate in daily bedside rehabilitation which is important for lung transplantation," said Dr Bharat. Typically, a double-lung transplant takes 6 to 7 hours, but this surgery took about 10 hours due to lung necrosis and severe inflammation in the chest cavities resulting from COVID-19. "Prior to his arrival at Northwestern Memorial, the patient developed an invasive infection which required a major chest surgery. This was going to make the double-lung transplant substantially more difficult," says Samuel Kim, MD, Northwestern Medicine thoracic surgeon, who assisted in the double-lung transplant alongside Dr Bharat. "His lung damage was among the worst I've ever seen. When we opened the chest cavity there was a lot of evidence of infection; everything we touched or dissected started bleeding and one misstep could have led to catastrophic consequences." Northwestern surgeons led by Dr Bharat in June have performed what is believed to have been the first-known lung transplant on a COVID-19 patient in the US last month -- on a woman in her 20s. The surgeons performed their first on a woman in her 20s whose lungs showed irreversible damage from the virus. She became the first known COVID-19 patient in the United States to receive a double-lung transplant. "Our first patient continues to recover at an optimal pace," says Rade Tomic, MD, a pulmonologist and medical director of the Lung Transplant Programme. "Our second patient is already off the ventilator and is talking to his family. Anyone listening to it is getting hurt by it." The remark came after his explosive comment that anti-vax claims on Facebook were "killing people."But even censure from the most powerful person in the world can only do so much. Anti-vaccine disinformation has crept up on the Biden administration's COVID-19 response, complicating the rapid rollout of free, life-saving vaccines.Tenpenny's limited following of around 115,000 people across conventional social-media platforms (<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/twitter-suspends-anti-vaxx-sherri-tenpenny-after-pushed-magnet-claim-2021-7">she was recently banned from Twitter</a>) obscures her true reach.Between her podcast, appearances on Infowars, and speeches at right-wing rallies, she's had more than 1.5 million streams.<a href="https://www.npr.org/2021/07/16/1017002907/u-s-covid-deaths-are-rising-again-experts-call-it-a-pandemic-of-the-unvaccinated">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials are now saying</a> that <keyword id="10585828" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="vaccine-misinformation">vaccine misinformation</keyword> is contributing to the "pandemic of the unvaccinated." In the Ohio Statehouse, Tenpenny knew that Democrats, who opposed the bill against vaccine mandates, would confront her with the "Disinformation Dozen" label."I said, 'yeah! I'm kind of proud of that, that's pretty cool, isn't it?'" she told her Bible study group. "I just, like, pivoted it."She chuckled. "Idiots."<h2>Sowing doubt</h2>Weeks before any <keyword id="8904563" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="covid-19-vaccine">COVID-19 vaccine</keyword> trials were completed, Tenpenny was sure of the outcome. "They're being led like sheep to the slaughter, Alex," she told the conspiracy theorist Alex Jones on Infowars in September. "What's coming in this vaccine is going to be horrific."Tenpenny is a doctor, but her specialism is osteopathy. She has no qualifications in epidemiology. Despite this, she has spent years making unproven or exaggerated claims about vaccines. She regularly talks about the 40,000 hours she has spent researching the topic.Tenpenny gave an initial interview to Insider followed by an email exchange, in which she partly responded to several detailed requests for comment.Speaking to Insider, she explained why she produces no research herself, and instead presents her conclusions based on reading scientific papers. They are often, though not always, peer-reviewed materials."I quote what I quote and I use references so people can read the material themselves, so that they can see that I don't take things out of context," she said. But the material is often taken out of context.Tenpenny sells a suite of four educational courses on COVID-19, priced at $79 a module, though currently discounted to $24.95.In course materials viewed by Insider from the "Social Distancing and Contact Tracing" module, Tenpenny cited the leading atmospherics researcher Professor Lidia Morawska from Queensland University of Technology, Australia.<div type="image" title="A screenshot of a slide from Dr Tenpenny's course on social distancing. "I never said that distancing is useless, quite to the contrary."Confronted with this, Tenpenny said that Morawska was "backpedaling" from the conclusions of her own research.Needless to say, Morawska disagreed.Tenpenny sent Insider extensive materials, including a document about the COVID-19 vaccine named "20 mechanisms of injury," many of which have already been extensively debunked, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/factcheck-vaccine-safe-idUSL2N2NX1J6">as Reuters reported</a>. Insider asked Professor Raymond Tellier, a microbiologist with specialisms in coronaviruses, pandemics, and medical microbiology at McGill University, to review the document. Tellier said: "To paraphrase Luke Skywalker: 'Amazing. Almost everything she said is wrong.'"He sent Insider a point-by-point rebuttal of her assertions on spike proteins, mRNA, human DNA, adenoviruses, and anaphylaxis, all of which Tenpenny uses to falsely claim that the vaccine is harmful."It is quite clear that she does not understand (or willfully misrepresents) the articles she is reading, and is incapable of appreciating them correctly," he said.Insider sent Tenpenny Tellier's detailed critique. There is no official report of the vaccine causing, or even being connected to, 45,000 deaths. The CDC's Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) has logged, to date, <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/safety/adverse-events.html">6,340 deaths in people who have had the shot</a>, or 0.0019% of all recipients.This doesn't mean the vaccine killed 6,340 people, since the system does not record - or even aim to record - whether a vaccine caused a death or if it is merely a coincidence.Reports can be submitted by anyone, and no connection between the vaccine and ill effects needs to be proven.The figure of 45,000 vaccine deaths comes from the calculations, based on VAERS data, of an anonymous computer programmer in <a href="https://renz-law.com/45k-whistleblower-suit">a lawsuit filed by America's Frontline Doctors.</a> The group is known for spreading vaccine disinformation, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/28/technology/virus-video-trump.html">The New York Times reported</a>.The case has not been tested in court, but it has gone straight into Tenpenny's arsenal. So, too, has the fact that the COVID-19 vaccine has not undergone long-term trials - which Tenpenny embellished to a rightwing rally in Tampa in July."This shot has never been tested in humans before, ever," she said, adding: "There are no long-term studies." The follow-up did little to undo the main falsehood, given that the vaccine was tested on around 75,000 volunteers.To "pass" Tenpenny's anti-social distancing course, users must answer 10 true-or-false questions showing they accept the main conclusions of the course: that social distancing has no benefit in a pandemic, and that masks are a form of mind control. Even Kill You."This income is on top of sales from Tenpenny's pre-recorded training courses, her line of supplements, as well as her fees for appearing in multiple vaccine-injury cases. And each webinar produces more customers. "My job is to teach the 400 of you in the class … so each one of you go out and teach 1,000," she told her $623-a-head "Mastering Vaccine Info Boot Camp" in March, <a href="https://www.cbc.ca/news/marketplace/marketplace-covid-conspiracy-boot-camp-1.5963503">the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported</a>.Judges have called her vaccine-injury fees exorbitant. In a long-running case, a federal court official in 2009 "expressed serious concern" over the $25,800 Tenpenny billed a client, noting she had claimed to have spent 260 hours preparing for a single day's hearing. She also had billed two meals for a total of $139.19, the judge said. The vaccine-injured client, Michael Shaw, eventually won his case with testimony from a neurologist. But Tenpenny's testimony was criticized as scientifically illiterate.The official said it had likely slowed Shaw's access to justice.<h2>From vaccine hesitancy to conspiracy theories</h2>Tenpenny's <a href="https://www.facebook.com/vaxxterinfo">"Vaxxter" Facebook page description</a> said it was dedicated to exposing "problems associated with Big Pharma.""We support fully informed consent and support your right to refuse vaccines and mandatory medications," it said.After Insider highlighted the content of the page, Facebook removed it, along with a slew of other pages linked to Tenpenny.Debates around medical freedoms have been enormously re-energized in right-wing politics during the pandemic, whether they be about mask-wearing, lockdowns, or vaccine use. Indeed, it was Ohio House Rep. Jennifer Gross who invited Tenpenny to testify in the statehouse about the anti-vaccine mandate bill in June, <a href="https://eu.cincinnati.com/story/news/politics/2021/07/14/story-behind-ohio-doctor-sherri-tenpenny-magnetic-anti-vaccine-testimony/7966660002/">as the Cincinnati Enquirer reported</a>. Gross didn't respond to Insider's request for comment.While Tenpenny takes that increasingly mainstream position on Facebook, she often directs her followers to more niche material elsewhere. Tenpenny told Insider it was a "given" that she tones down how she talks on mainstream social media platforms. "Everybody modifies their language these days if they want to say what they really think because the censorship spiders, and reporters, will come along and take it out of context or take it down," she said. Which is why over on Infowars, the story goes far beyond the reasonable questions a vaccine-hesitant person might have.There, the shot is - apparently - part of a big pharma plot to sicken people with vaccines in order to create a bigger medical customer base. "These shots are designed to make you sick and even kill you," she told Alex Jones on July 1."The people at the top of this ladder, they're eugenicists and I believe many of them are satanists," she told him last September. Tenpenny's worldview has strayed into antisemitism, <a href="https://www.thejc.com/news/uk/leading-anti-vaxx-influencers-promote-jew-hate-to-hundreds-of-thousands-1.516228">as The Jewish Chronicle first reported</a>.The CCDH provided Insider with several antisemitic Telegram posts from Tenpenny, which variously mention Jewish figures such as the Rothschild family and George Soros. In some cases, they allege ambitions of world domination, which is <a href="https://www.ajc.org/translatehate/New-World-Order">considered antisemitic by the American Jewish Committee</a>. She also shared an interview in which Bishop Richard Williamson claimed that no Jews were gassed in Nazi concentration camps during what he called "the quote-unquote Holocaust." The post was accompanied by a note that "posting and forwarding are not an endorsement.""Many people share things on different channels," Tenpenny told Insider of the post, saying she had no idea who Williamson is. "This is his interpretation … I could challenge and debate everyone of his statements with other studies.""'His studies' vs 'my studies' … that's what scientific debate is about," she added.Asked about a post in which she said that "the CEOs of the major vaccine manufacturers are Jews," Tenpenny said it had been posted by a member of her social-media team, and that they had held a meeting about it after it received attention. She did not take the post down, however, tellling Insider: "Then the next time somebody gets upset about something, do we take that out? Or do we just say, suck it up, buttercup, move on? It's not that big a deal."<h2>Sluggish reaction from social-media companies</h2>Instagram has taken little action on Tenpenny's "@happyhourwithDrT" Bible study account, which often veers into anti-vaccine disinformation.Facebook has been sporadic in how it responds to her posts. Until Insider contacted the company, her "Vaxxter" page remained live, with some posts marked with a link to a fact-check and others offering links to accurate COVID-19 information.After questions from Insider, Facebook and Instagram took down five pages linked to Tenpenny, including "Vaxxter," and two Instagram accounts, citing breaches of its <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> misinformation policies.While she rarely posted written vaccine disinformation on Facebook, Tenpenny used the "Vaxxter" page to direct its 27,000 followers to her podcast, which is hosted on Podbean.After Insider contacted Podbean for comment, the company said Tenpenny's content violated its terms of use, and that the channel had been removed. However, it was still live at time of publication.The whack-a-mole system is deeply frustrating to Imran Ahmed, CEO of CCDH."People are looking for big answers to big problems, and that's where conspiracist-thinking stuff can go in," he told Insider. "We know that these are bad actors," he said, speaking of the Disinformation Dozen. "And that's been our argument with the social media companies."<h2>'No bottom line beyond the bottom line'</h2>Tenpenny's social media presence is warm, world-weary, and comforting. In her cozy Instagram chats, she seems completely sincere in her beliefs.But for Ahmed, the Disinformation Dozen have one prime motivation: Money. "There is no true self" with them, he said. "There's no bottom line beyond the bottom line."He said CCDH's researchers had infiltrated a meeting of the National Vaccine Information Center, a group <a href="https://www.newsguardtech.com/superspreaders/#april23">identified by NewsGuard</a> as spreading "false and unsubstantiated claims about vaccination."There, anti-vaxxers including Tenpenny "were arguing in secret over how they were going to take advantage of COVID.""They were bubbling over with glee at the opportunity that COVID presents to them for market growth," he said.

The NMC will constitute three autonomous bodies — Under-Graduate Medical Education Board, Post-Graduate Medical Education Board, and Ethics and Medical Registration Board — which will focus on ensuring global standards of education.
