A suspiciously high number of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/golden-bachelor-women-contestants-instagram-handles-2023-10">women</a> claimed that the sport was one of their interests after Turner said that he did it to keep fit. "I get my <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/golden-bachelor-gerry-turner-72-diet-workout-routine-2023-10">exercise</a> that way," Turner told GQ, saying that he played pickleball three mornings a week for three hours. In the latest episode of the show, the 72-year-old hosted a pop-up <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/i-tried-pickleball-rules-court-paddles-2023-7">pickleball</a> tournament. The women were pitted against each other in teams of two. The victors received a trophy and the opportunity to take part in a photo shoot with Turner for a national pickleball magazine. There was drama on the court when one of the contestants appeared to stumble and fall. "I think I broke my ankle," April Kirkwood exclaimed, dropping her paddle. <h2>Injuries can happen</h2>Turner — who'd said in an interview that he'd gotten two black eyes from pickleball in the past — stepped in. He let Kirkwood rest her head on his shoulder before a medic arrived. Thankfully, April wasn't seriously hurt, and she was able to keep playing. The 65-year-old later confessed she'd faked it to spend a bit more one-on-one time with Turner. "Actually, I'm totally fine," she said. Though it wasn't shown on film, another contestant, Nancy Hulkower, suffered a genuine injury during the high-stakes competition. She sustained a stress fracture on her foot and appeared in a surgical boot before the famous rose ceremony. "It hurts," the 60-year-old said. "I'm just hanging in." Hulkower's plight came as little surprise to George Eldayrie, a leading sports-medicine doctor based in Florida. He told Insider he's treated as many as three seniors a week who'd picked up injuries on the pickleball court. "Most of them are over 50, " he said. The organization says in a fact sheet that the sport has "developed a passionate following due to its friendly, social nature, and its multi-generational appeal." Eldayrie agreed that the sport — which takes place on a court about the same size as a badminton court — is particularly popular with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/senior-pickleball-daily-diet-exercise-routine-longevity-health-tips-2023-5">older people.</a> He said many of them had played higher-energy racquet sports in the past, such as tennis and squash. "Their body might not be able to meet the demands of running around the tennis court anymore," Eldayrie said. "But they can get the same kind of enjoyment, social interaction, and hand-eye coordination from pickleball without having to run as much." Still, Eldayire, who works with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.orlandohealth.com/services-and-specialties/orlando-health-jewett-orthopedic-institute">Orlando Health Jewett Orthopedic Institute,</a> said the sport can result in nasty injuries. "I see the typical kind of symptoms that you see in tennis elbow or golfer's elbow," he said. The pain of tennis and golfer's elbow is associated with the overuse and repetitive use of the muscles and tendons in the wrist and arm. Eldayrie said other pickleball injuries could be related to "a trip, fall, or exertion." "You might strain a calf muscle, pull a hamstring, or irritate some <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/arthritis-signs-2018-11">arthritis </a>in the knee," he said. But he said the risk of injury can be mitigated by a few simple measures. <h2>Wear the right type of shoes</h2>Pickleball involves a lot of pivoting and back-and-forth movements on the court, Eldayrie said, which could cause falls that many seniors take longer to recover from. "It's a good idea to invest in shoes that offer ankle support," the physician said. "You are less likely to roll your ankle if you are wearing a stable shoe that's a little bit bulkier and can take more impact." <h2>Stretch</h2>He said players should follow the lead of professional athletes and perform routine <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/fitness/benefits-of-stretching">stretches.</a> "Stretching is important," he said. "Most people only focus on pre-participation stretching, but it's better for <keyword id="21203420" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="injury-prevention" source="keywords">injury prevention</keyword> if you do it afterward, too." He advised people to "loosen up a bit, get in a little stretch, participate, and do a cool-down stretch at the end." He recommended a hamstring stretch, a quad stretch, a groin stretch, and a "little side lunge." He also suggested shoulder circles and wrist stretching. "Bend your wrist all the way down and all the way up to feel that stretch in your arms," Eldayrie said. <h2>Play doubles, not singles, and pace yourself</h2>The doctor said seniors might consider playing doubles instead of singles for safety reasons. "Both can be demanding, but there's not a whole lot of running with doubles," he said. He said that a team of two players is more likely to take time to chat between points and recalibrate. "Remember to give your body a break," he said. It's also important to know your limits — even if you're trying to impress someone. Don't carry on for the sake of appearance, Eldayrie said. "You shouldn't be playing if your pain is more than a two out of 10," he said. "Aches and soreness are relatively OK, but sharp stabbing pains are not." He also recommended that everyone, but especially seniors, consult their doctor before taking up any sport.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Throughout the pandemic, millions of workers across the US have demanded more from work.</li><li><keyword id="11894375" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="doctors" source="Orion">Doctors</keyword> have faced especially tough conditions on the forefront of the pandemic.</li></ul>When the pandemic hit, Dr. Amy Zhang was roughly halfway through her first year as an anesthesiology resident at the University of Washington in Seattle."We're the ones who would most likely be exposed to individuals who may need intubation as a result of COVID-19," Zhang told Insider.Zhang, 31, is now a fourth-year resident. As for other doctors around the world, the pandemic suddenly changed her workload and presented a completely different set of challenges. With the pandemic, "we really stepped up," Zhang said. "So people worked more and people definitely put in more effort to make sure that patients are safe and patients are treated fairly." <div type="image" title="Dr. Amy Zhang" height="960" width="718" msid="90624251" hostid="261"></div>Zhang is also the president and lead negotiator of the <a href="https://rfpu.org/">Resident &amp; Fellow Physician Union – Northwest</a> (RFPU-NW), <a href="https://uwresidents.files.wordpress.com/2021/06/20-21-rfpu-nw-annual-report.pdf">which says</a> it represents 1,400 residents and fellows at the University of Washington — about 20% of doctors in the Seattle area.On February 23, about 350 or more of its <keyword id="11897816" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="union" source="Orion">union</keyword> members walked out for a 15-minute "unity break." Though doctors are not typically a very unionized group, the profession's demographics are changing, and their demands for equitable and safe workplaces are changing with it.<h2>'A lot of doctors are scared to be part of a union'</h2>In a year where labor actions seemed more prominent than ever, doctors are <a href="https://www.newyorker.com/culture/annals-of-inquiry/why-doctors-should-organize">still behind</a> their other unionized peers. But that could change.Joe Crane, an organizer at the Doctors Council, a <a href="https://doctorscouncil.org/our-history/">decades-old</a> doctor's union affiliated with the SEIU, estimates that about 10,000 attending physicians are unionized — half with the Doctors Council — and over 20,000 residents are unionized with the <a href="https://www.cirseiu.org/">Committee of Interns and Residents</a>. There were about 700,000 physicians and surgeons in the US as of 2021, according to the <a href="https://www.bls.gov/news.release/ocwage.t01.htm">Bureau of Labor Statistics</a>. There are a few reasons why unionization is low. Just in 2020, the majority of patient-care physicians shifted to being employed as opposed to working in their own private practices, according to the <a href="https://www.ama-assn.org/press-center/press-releases/ama-analysis-shows-most-physicians-work-outside-private-practice#:~:text=Employment%20status,2018%20and%2053.2%25%20in%202012.">American Medical Association (AMA)</a> — the first time since the data started getting analyzed in 2012.It's also about perceptions of what a union fights for, some doctors told Insider. It's not necessarily about more money, but about supporting patients and keeping doctors safe.<div type="image" title="Dr. Frances Quee" height="302" width="403" msid="90624252" hostid="261"></div>"A lot of doctors are scared to be part of a union, because they just think it would look like they're after monetary increases," Dr. Frances Quee, a pediatrician who's been practicing for 29 years and second vice-president at the Doctors Council, told Insider. For Quee, being a part of the union is about having a say in patient care and satisfaction — and improving safety in the hospital."As a psychiatrist, I could imagine only seeing eight to 10 or 12 patients a day. I thought, as a union person, I might be able to help hundreds of thousands of other doctors, do a better job, a more efficient job, a more satisfying job," Dr. Frank Proscia, the president of the Doctors Council, told Insider. "I figured this way I'll be helping more patients, ultimately."<div type="image" title="Dr. Frank Proscia" height="3024" width="4032" msid="90624254" hostid="261"></div><h2>'We're also realizing that it's important for us to speak out'</h2>Then there are residents, a younger generation that <a href="https://news.gallup.com/poll/354455/approval-labor-unions-highest-point-1965.aspx">sees unions differently</a>. Plus, they're paid a lot less than their older peers.Residents graduate from medical school, and are essentially sorted into training jobs in their chosen specialty. In 2017-2018, the average age of a student matriculating in <a href="https://www.aamc.org/system/files/d/1/321468-factstablea6.pdf">medical school was 24</a>, meaning they may head to residency around age 28. In comparison, about 45% of physicians across specialties were <a href="https://www.aamc.org/data-reports/workforce/interactive-data/active-physicians-age-and-specialty-2019">over the age of 55</a> as of 2019.<div type="image" title="Dr. George Plummer" height="2636" width="3515" msid="90624257" hostid="261"></div>"Most hospitals would not hire anybody who hasn't gone through residency. It's a path that everybody has to take. We're all kind of funneled into it," Dr. George Plummer, a neurology resident at University of Washington and membership engagement chair at RFPU-NW, told Insider. "We're kind of in a weird position. People have slowly realized that if we don't stick together and look out for each other, the hospitals will continue to take advantage of the work of residents." BLS <a href="https://www.bls.gov/news.release/ocwage.t01.htm">reports</a> that the mean annual pay for physicians was $252,480 in 2021. The average resident salary was $64,000 in 2021, according to <a href="https://www.medscape.com/slideshow/2021-residents-salary-debt-report-6014074#2">Medscape</a>. "They could tell me that I'm gonna have a pay cut next year and there would be nothing that I could really do about it, because I would still need to finish residency to ever practice," Dr. Kaley Kinnamon, a second-year neurology resident at University of Vermont Medical Center and a member of the residents' organizing committee there, said. "I think that that's kind of where a union comes in."Kinnamon is on the organizing committee for the <a href="https://www.cirseiu.org/a-supermajority-of-resident-physicians-at-uvm-demand-union-recognition-amid-staffing-shortages-extreme-physician-burnout/">residents at University of Vermont Medical Center</a>, who announced the formation of their union in early March. The number of women enrolling in <a href="https://www.aamc.org/news-insights/more-women-men-are-enrolled-medical-school">medical school now outnumbers men</a>. The amount of people of color enrolling in medical school has also ticked up, although it still remains small.The movement from residents comes as doctors more broadly rethink work. A <a href="https://www.mcpiqojournal.org/article/S2542-4548(21)00126-0/fulltext">survey</a> by researchers at the Mayo Clinic of 20,665 healthcare workers at 124 institutions found that a third of physicians intend to cut back on their hours — and about a fifth plan to leave altogether within the next two years. "There's very much a culture in medicine that you just put your head down and get through, and it's hard to find the time and energy to take on anything extra when you're working 80 plus hours a week," Dr. Becca Merrifox, a 34-year-old second-year pediatrics resident at University of Vermont Medical Center, said. "I think there's this growing sentiment that we can do better. It is worth the time to form a union." "Doctors are becoming more progressive," Zhang said. "They're becoming more politically conscious. And we're also realizing that it's important for us to speak out."

Aurangabad, Apr 6 () Amid the coronavirus outbreak,resident doctors of the Government Medical College andHospital here in Maharashtra staged a protest demandingpersonal protective equipment and N95 surgical masks for theirown safety.Two patients and a staff member of the GovernmentMedical College and Hospital (GMCH) have so far testedpositive for coronavirus at the medical facility.The resident doctors protested outside the office ofthe GMCH dean on Sunday and said the personal protectiveequipment (PPE) and N95 masks were essential for doctorsdeployed in emergency health services.They submitted a memorandum to the dean, saying theywould stay quarantined in their hostels if the safetyequipment are not provided."Even after some patients tested positive forcoronavirus, the doctors treating them in emergency wards werenot provided these safety equipment," Mahrashtra Associationof Resident Doctors (MARD) Aurangabad unit president Dr AmirTadvi told .These doctors attend to 50 to 100 patients in a day.It is now dangerous to treat patients without the protectiveequipment, he said."We have put forth our demands as per guidelines ofthe Indian Council of Medical Research. We expect that theseequipment would be supplied without any disruption.
