A recent report by Axis AMC shed light on the burgeoning Indian mutual fund industry. Since March 2021, the MF industry has grown at a CAGR (compounded annual growth rate) of 23.65%, touching an AUM (asset under management) of Rs 67.25 lakh crore in October 2024. <keyword id="20300870" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Equity-Mutual-Funds" source="keywords">Equity mutual funds</keyword>, which garnered Rs 41,886.69 crore during the month, saw a 58.96% YoY growth. The biggest contributor to the equity segment was sectoral funds, which captured 29.3% of net equity sales in October 2024. In all, they brought in Rs 12,278.78 crore during October 2024. The AUM of <keyword id="20890471" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hybrid-Funds" source="keywords">hybrid funds</keyword> also stood at Rs 9.24 lakh crore during the month, registering an annual growth of 47.8% and inflows worth Rs 16,863.30 crore during October 2024. Amidst this, the arbitrage funds led in net sales, capturing 3.61% of their AUM with monthly inflows worth Rs 7,181.70 crores. There and more people are entering the Indian markets, as is evident in the growing SIP corpus (Systematic Investment Plans), which saw contributions worth Rs 25,323 crore in October 2024, a 54.7% year-over-year growth. In October 2024, about 63,69,919 new SIPs were registered, taking the number of SIP accounts to a record high of 10,12,34,212 The growth in equity investments was largely led by retail investors and HNIs (high-net-worth individuals). Since March 2021, the retail segment in mutual funds has seen a 31.2% CAGR, while banks and foreign investors have recorded a CAGR of 31.8% during the same period. Corporations were the biggest contributors to debt mutual funds. Notably, the AUM of debt funds grew 14.8% over the previous year to stand at Rs 10,65,037 crore as of October 2024. The category saw net sales worth Rs 47,699 crore last month. Also testimony to the growing interest of investors in mutual funds were the figures of <keyword id="23958398" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Passive-Mutual-Funds" source="keywords">passive mutual funds</keyword>, which recorded net sales worth Rs 8,025 crore during the month. Out of this, just index funds observed net sales of Rs 7,931 crore in the previous month. AUM from the top 30 Indian cities grew at 22.6% CAGR, whereas other cities grew at 27.8% CAGR since March 2021. FY25 also seemed to be the year where NFOs received an enthusiastic response from investors. So far, a total of 124 NFO schemes have managed to collect a total of over Rs 77,932 crore.

Mutual funds in spotlight: Industry grew at 23.65% CAGR since March 2021

India's <keyword id="252144" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fuel-demand" source="Orion">fuel demand</keyword> fell in the first half of March after posting record growth in the previous month, preliminary industry data showed on Thursday. Fuel sales soared to the highest levels in February on the back of robust demand from the agriculture sector as well as transport picking up after the winter lull. March saw the seasonal slowdown kicking in with a rise in temperatures. <keyword id="3146552" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="petrol-sales" source="Orion">Petrol sales</keyword> decreased by 1.4 per cent to 1.22 million tonnes in the first half of March when compared with the same period of last year. Sales fell 0.5 per cent month-on-month, the data showed. Diesel, the most consumed fuel in the country, saw demand slip 10.2 per cent to 3.18 million tonnes from March 1 to 15 when compared with 3.54 million tonnes of sales in the same period a year back. Month-on-month the demand was down 4.6 per cent. During the first half of February, petrol consumption had jumped by almost 18 per cent year-on-year while <keyword id="998651" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="diesel-sales" source="Orion">diesel sales</keyword> were up nearly 25 per cent. The consumption of petrol in the first half of March was 16.4 per cent more than the Covid-marred first half of March 2021 and almost 23 per cent more than in the same period of 2020. Diesel consumption was up 11.5 per cent over the first half of March 2021 and 20.2 per cent higher than in 2020. While cold conditions slowed truck movements in January, the onset of spring revived demand in February. With the continued opening of the aviation sector, India's overall passenger traffic at airports inched closer to pre-Covid levels. Reflecting the trend, jet fuel (ATF) demand jumped 19.2 per cent to 2,94,900 tonnes during the first half of March when compared to the same period last year. It was 35.6 per cent higher than in March 2021 but 8.2 per cent lower than in March 2020. Month-on-month sales were almost flat. Sources said while domestic air travel is back to pre-Covid levels, international traffic is lagging because of continued restrictions in some countries. India's recovery has continued to gain momentum in recent months but has been accompanied by elevated inflation. This slowed the momentum a bit. The country's oil demand had been rising steadily since the easing of COVID-19 restrictions. Cooking gas LPG sales fell 9.7 per cent year-on-year to 1.18 million tonnes from March 1-15. LPG consumption was 7.1 per cent higher than in March 2021 and 3.6 per cent more than in March 2020. Month-on-month, the demand dropped 15.10 when compared to 1.39 million tonnes of LPG consumption during February 1-15, the data showed. Petrol, diesel sales drop in first half of March after hitting record high in February

German luxury car maker Mercedes-Benz on Tuesday reported record sales in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> at 4,697 units during the first quarter of 2023, a 17 per cent growth over the year-ago period, with its top-end vehicles priced above Rs 1 crore seeing accelerated growth. <keyword id="184004" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="mercedes-benz-india" source="Orion">Mercedes-Benz India</keyword>, which had sold 4,022 units in the same quarter last year, launched its hybrid <keyword id="2512079" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="amg-gt" source="Orion">AMG GT</keyword> 63 S E Performance model with a price starting at Rs 3.3 crore (ex-showroom Delhi) as part of its strategy to accelerate sales of top-end vehicles (TEVs). For the fiscal ended March 31, 2022, the company posted its highest-ever sales at 16,497 units as against 12,071 units in 2021-22, a growth of 37 per cent. "Overall, our growth story continues with a record quarter and a record fiscal year...Double-digit growth continues for us in 2023," Mercedes-Benz India Managing Director &amp; CEO Santosh <keyword id="25076" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="iyer" source="Orion">Iyer</keyword> told PTI. He said, "When I look at the composition, the top-end vehicles (TEVs) actually showed more than 100 per cent growth in quarter one at 107 per cent...So the juggernaut with the top-end vehicles continues also in quarter one." Mercedes-Benz India's TEVs include S-Class Maybach, <keyword id="13607641" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="gls-maybach" source="Orion">GLS Maybach</keyword>, top-end AMGs, S-Class and GLS SUV, which are priced over Rs 1 crore (ex-showroom). The company, which posted record sales in 2022 at 15,822 units, had sold over 3,500 units of TEVs, growing at 69 per cent. "We as a brand are highly focused in India and worldwide to grow the TEV segment. The India strategy only further resonates," Iyer said, adding that the growth of the company's TEV sales is also a "clear reflection of the changing luxury car market in India". Earlier, he said the composition of the luxury market used to be dominated by entry-level luxury cars, but has "changed, at least for us". Also for electric vehicles, he said, "It reflects the changing profile of customers. They now prefer to combine sustainability and luxury at the top-end level. This clearly shows the changing profile of Indian consumers also." In keeping with its strategy to accelerate the TEV sales growth, the company on Tuesday launched its hybrid AMG GT 63 S E Performance model, which is the most powerful production car by Mercedes-AMG. It uses technology already tested in Formula 1 racing. It is powered by a combination of a 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine and an electric motor generating 843 hp, capable of accelerating from 0-100 kmph in 2.9 seconds. Iyer said all Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance customers will get the key handover from multiple Formula 1 racing world champion Lewis Hamilton. On the current demand situation, Iyer said at present Mercedes-Benz India has an order bank exceeding over 4,000 cars. "The order bank situation continues to be strong. Our focus is on delivering them and that's the reason for our best-ever quarter and also best-ever fiscal. It's not only about taking bookings and waiting, but we are also able to sell a significantly high number of cars," he added. Asked about the new product launch plan, having pushed some of the launches scheduled for the first quarter of 2023 to the second and third, he said, "Right now, we are launching one car. This quarter, our idea is to launch an additional one or two cars if possible. Our launch continues. We remain committed to the 10 launches for this year." In order to avoid a long waiting period, the company is ramping up the availability of parts and components to start producing more cars by working with its supply chain to optimise parts availability as much as possible. Already, Mercedes-Benz India said it has reduced the waiting period for its models. The current waiting periods for A-Class, C-Class, and E-Class models are zero to three months, while those of GLE, GLS and S-Class are two to six months. For the company's electric vehicles, the waiting period at present is two to six months while those of G-Wagon and GLS Maybach are between 8-16 months, it added. On the growth outlook for the fiscal, Iyer said the company is confident of posting a double-digit growth. Mercedes-Benz India posts record sales at 4,697 units in March quarter

sales</keyword> The three-wheeler category that includes auto rickshaws for passengers, goods and personal categories in addition to e-rickshaws and e-rickshaw with cart – is also showing phenomenal growth. The retailer association attributes this to positive sentiments, fear of lockdowns subsiding and high electrification that the sector is seeing. Passenger e-rickshaw sales grew by a massive 112.88% over November 2021 while e-rickshaws with cart grew 75%. Tractor sales have also been healthy for the month, which is when the sowing of winter crops begins. “For Bharat, normally after the harvest starts, farmers get money in hand and this starts the spending cycle. We expect spending for auto sales to go up once the harvest comes into the market and farmers start getting money in their hands,” the release said. A lot of two-wheeler sales are dependent on rural recovery, in addition to tractors. Speed breakers ahead In spite of the good momentum seen across categories, there could be many speed breakers ahead for the sector. Recently, the Reserve Bank of India <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/finance/news/rbi-hikes-repo-rate-by-35-bps-taking-rates-to-a-high-of-6-25/articleshow/96045841.cms">announced its fifth interest rate hike that will drive up</a> the borrowing costs of owning a vehicle, as a lot of them depend on vehicle finance. The latest rate hike now brings the repo rate to 6.25%. “This will further lead to a higher cost of borrowing apart from the price hikes done by OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) and may dent consumer confidence, specially in the 2W and entry level PV segment,” FADA said. Auto companies have also announced price hikes to offset the cost of high input prices. Maruti Suzuki was the first to announce a price hike from January next year, adding that price hikes will vary across models. Luxury car maker Audi too said that it will hike vehicle prices by up to 1.7%, starting January. Meanwhile, the rise of <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/commodities/diamond-markets-crash-lab-synthetic-stones-engagement-rings-prices-finance-2023-9">lab-grown stones have also been a pain point for the industry</a>, as demand for synthetic stones has been cutting into the market for rough diamonds.At the same time, the industry's most important market, the US, was slammed with high inflation. One of India’s largest retailers <keyword id="2407038" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="dmart" source="Orion">DMart</keyword> has added 50 new stores last year – it’s highest ever. Many more retailers are hitting the historic store-addition highs. For instance <keyword id="158137" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="domino" source="Orion">Domino</keyword>’s, run by <keyword id="95677" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jubilant-foodworks" source="Orion">Jubilant FoodWorks</keyword> in India, opened 58 new stores across 12 cities in the first quarter of this year. At least ten top retailers have said that they are looking at rapid expansion. “Brick-and-mortar retail to grow at 14-16% this fiscal, driven by continued expansion across segments – food, grocery, apparel and consumer durables – and return to normalcy from the Covid-19 pandemic,” said a research report by CRISIL. In the last fiscal, store expansion was higher at 21%, the report noted. These store additions will drive revenue growth of 18-20% this fiscal year and the full impact of the expansion will be seen in the next few years. The investments by retailers are expected to go up by 8-10% this year, with the apparel segment expected to lead this growth. “Companies stated that a strong recovery was witnessed during the (first) quarter on the back of improved footfalls and receding impact of Covid. As a result, companies are now resuming with their store expansion plans,” said a report by Motilal Oswal. CRISIL also said that the credit metrics of retailers support their expansion plans. “The credit ratio moderated in FY21 reflecting pandemic impact. Waning of pandemic-related disruptions resulted in sharp recovery in FY22,” it said. Brick-and-mortar expands online too However, not all their expanded investments will go into physical stores, as most of them are keen on providing a hybrid experience. Brick-and-mortar retailers are growing their online presence with apps, warehouses and more – likely fuelling growth in e-retailing as well. Last year, e-retailing grew at 26%, and this year, it’s poised to grow anywhere between 27-32%, according to CRISIL. The rating agency also said that omnichannel strategy will be the way forward as lower footfalls in stores can be compensated by higher online sales. Retail footfalls are still at 85-90% of their pre-pandemic levels . “Stores can display limited inventory. Hence, an omnichannel is a must,” the report said. Retailers will tend to push last-season merchandise online at higher discounts. DMart, for instance, has set up its app and pick-up centers for home delivery after handling its bulk delivery orders during the pandemic. Reliance Retail too stepped into this delivery business with its app, <keyword id="8506093" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jiomart" source="Orion">JioMart</keyword> with little success, though it has also invested in Dunzo. Time does matter When it comes to the delivery market, it’s not about what you deliver, how you deliver but it’s all about ‘when’ you deliver. Online grocery market has two segments -- quick commerce and scheduled e-grocery. Only Jiomart, Bigbasket and DMart are scheduled e-grocery stores, all the other platforms are in a race of quick delivery business. And the segment seems to be ruled by the ‘10-30-minute delivery’ offered by platforms like <keyword id="6358977" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="swiggy" source="Orion">Swiggy</keyword>, Blinkit, Zepto and Dunzo. Most of the retail chains who intend to deliver groceries however have a one-day lag period between order and delivery. Added to that, quick commerce platforms are addressing multiple consumer pain-points such as convenience, speed, curated assortment, value, and round-the clock standardized services. Online food ordering business is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/retail/news/grocery-business-is-like-poison-pill-for-zomato-after-failing-miserably-two-times-as-per-analysts/articleshow/92202068.cms">aiding growth in the e-grocery as well</a>. Customers who order food online for convenience, wider selection, discounts and standardized customer support are also likely to be more amenable to ordering grocery items online for the very same reasons. This opens up cross-sell opportunities for food-techs like Swiggy and Blinkit, which is merging with Zomato. Paan to curds - quick commerce delivers it all A February 2022 Survey by LocalCircles indicates that 71% of the households used q-commerce platforms to either order daily use items such as milk, bread, eggs, curd, fruits and vegetables, etc. They also ordered indulgence items such as soft drinks, ice creams, chocolates and paan. Though, only 29% of the surveyed households used q-commerce for ‘all their grocery’ purchases. For the bulk purchases however, the large format stores are still in the running as people are going to the stores. DMart is still aggressively opening stores in parts of the country to get back to pre-covid levels. “We believe it will look to accelerate store expansion and the benefit of recent expansion is yet to fully kick in – revenue intensity is lower than pre-Covid levels,” said analysts at ICICI Securities post its March quarter earnings. Redseer estimates the grocery market size in India was worth $620 billion in 2021, which is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8% over the next four years to reach over $850 billion by 2025. Quick commerce is all set for the long haul Quick commerce players are also vying for a bigger piece of the entire pie. The quick ordering might start with fresher foods like fruits and vegetables, meat, dairy and other ready-to-cook items; and also indulgence categories like chocolates, biscuits, snacking items, cold drinks, and tobacco. But it could extend to others too. “We also expect grocery staples, cooking essentials, medicines, baby and personal care, home care and pet care, amongst others, to pick up as consumers become more habituated to ordering through the platforms,” said the JM Financial report. Recently, Swiggy raised $700 million for quick-commerce grocery service Instamart. Zomato poured $150 million into quick commerce startup Blinkit. Zepto raised $200 million and lastly Reliance Industries also caught the quick commerce train by investing $200 million in Dunzo. This also means that competitive intensity is likely to be severe in the near term, between them and also with the big retailers. “Only those platforms that have very strong customer recall, robust back-end supply chain and/or strong balance sheet are likely to survive this battle of attrition,” said the report. JM Financial believes that quick delivery platforms have what it takes to disrupt the unorganized grocery market including neighbourhood kirana stores or even retail chains like DMart in large cities. This is despite the 5 per cent year-on-year and 41 per cent sequential contraction in volumes in April 2023, it noted. The growth in FY2024 would follow a year of healthy demand in FY2023, wherein the industry volumes expanded by more than 33 per cent, supported by a favourable base, as well as a healthy pick-up in macroeconomic activity, Icra said. The scrappage policy, which was announced in March 2021, has been implemented from April 1, 2023, and is likely to contribute to the growth of new commercial vehicle sales, it added. "The major impact of the scrappage policy is expected in the CV (Commercial Vehicle) segment, especially passenger carriers, as the usage of other vehicles such as two-wheelers, passenger vehicles, etc. beyond 15 years would be limited," Icra Corporate Ratings Vice President &amp; Co Group Head Kinjal Shah stated. "There's no doubt rising energy and gas prices are starting to take a toll on household budgets. March's report could be an early sign that consumers are starting to put away their wallets as prices for many goods soar across the board," he wrote.
