After 21% growth in FY23, auto sales to hit slow lane in FY24: FADA

Luxury homes are defined as those that cost over ₹10 crore and the first half of 2023 has seen sales of a whopping ₹11,400 crore in this segment. “Mumbai had been witnessing around ₹5,300 crore of luxury sales every half year, since 2018. In H1 2023, this number more than doubled to ₹11,400 crore, surpassing even the annual sales of 2018 – 2020,” says Sotheby’s. Amit Goyal, MD India at Sotheby’s International Realty believes that this indicates that real estate has made a meaningful comeback to ultra high-networth individuals’ portfolios. “With wealth creation in India growing at a fast pace, and the country’s wealthiest city Mumbai set to enter the list of top 20 cities with the most number of millionaires by 2023, we believe there’s an inherent strength in Mumbai’s luxury housing market which should continue in the future,” said Goyal. Size does matter Sales of homes that cost around ₹10-20 crore made up for around 71% of sales in the luxury segment, but there has been good traction in homes that cost ₹40-70 crore too, as per the report. Nine homes that cost over ₹70 crore were sold in the first half of the year, while 10 such sold in all of 2022, the report says. In the world of luxe, the size of homes is also growing, as per the report. Most of the luxury homes sold were in the 1,000-2,000 square feet range while the preference for 4,000-8,000 square feet homes tripled in the first half of 2023 as compared to the same period in 2018. “The Richie Rich is now eyeing larger homes than ever before with a clear preference for ocean views, higher floors and amenities galore,” says Abhishek Kiran Gupta, co-founder &amp; CEO, CRE Matrix &amp; IndexTap.

sales</keyword> The three-wheeler category that includes auto rickshaws for passengers, goods and personal categories in addition to e-rickshaws and e-rickshaw with cart – is also showing phenomenal growth. The retailer association attributes this to positive sentiments, fear of lockdowns subsiding and high electrification that the sector is seeing. Passenger e-rickshaw sales grew by a massive 112.88% over November 2021 while e-rickshaws with cart grew 75%. Tractor sales have also been healthy for the month, which is when the sowing of winter crops begins. “For Bharat, normally after the harvest starts, farmers get money in hand and this starts the spending cycle. We expect spending for auto sales to go up once the harvest comes into the market and farmers start getting money in their hands,” the release said. A lot of two-wheeler sales are dependent on rural recovery, in addition to tractors. Speed breakers ahead In spite of the good momentum seen across categories, there could be many speed breakers ahead for the sector. Recently, the Reserve Bank of India <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/finance/news/rbi-hikes-repo-rate-by-35-bps-taking-rates-to-a-high-of-6-25/articleshow/96045841.cms">announced its fifth interest rate hike that will drive up</a> the borrowing costs of owning a vehicle, as a lot of them depend on vehicle finance. The latest rate hike now brings the repo rate to 6.25%. “This will further lead to a higher cost of borrowing apart from the price hikes done by OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) and may dent consumer confidence, specially in the 2W and entry level PV segment,” FADA said. Auto companies have also announced price hikes to offset the cost of high input prices. Maruti Suzuki was the first to announce a price hike from January next year, adding that price hikes will vary across models. Luxury car maker Audi too said that it will hike vehicle prices by up to 1.7%, starting January. A <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/tata-motors-mulling-price-hike-for-passenger-vehicles-from-next-month-122120500821_1.html">PTI report has said that </a>Tata Motors is mulling a price hike for passenger vehicles from next month. “Along with this, the China lockdown may play its part in slowing the supply of semiconductors. If this happens, it may act as a speed breaker and add to supply-demand mismatch, which was improving since (the) last few months,” said FADA, which remains cautiously optimistic in the near term. Domestic two-wheelers registered a growth of 7 % at 2,56,619 units as against 2,39,325 units in August 2022, it added. The company said motorcycle sales were lower at 1,53,047 units in August 2023 as against 1,57,118 units in the same month last year, while scooter sales increased to 1,42,502 units from 1,21,866 units in the year-ago month. One of India’s largest retailers <keyword id="2407038" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="dmart" source="Orion">DMart</keyword> has added 50 new stores last year – it’s highest ever. Many more retailers are hitting the historic store-addition highs. For instance <keyword id="158137" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="domino" source="Orion">Domino</keyword>’s, run by <keyword id="95677" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jubilant-foodworks" source="Orion">Jubilant FoodWorks</keyword> in India, opened 58 new stores across 12 cities in the first quarter of this year. At least ten top retailers have said that they are looking at rapid expansion. “Brick-and-mortar retail to grow at 14-16% this fiscal, driven by continued expansion across segments – food, grocery, apparel and consumer durables – and return to normalcy from the Covid-19 pandemic,” said a research report by CRISIL. In the last fiscal, store expansion was higher at 21%, the report noted. These store additions will drive revenue growth of 18-20% this fiscal year and the full impact of the expansion will be seen in the next few years. The investments by retailers are expected to go up by 8-10% this year, with the apparel segment expected to lead this growth. “Companies stated that a strong recovery was witnessed during the (first) quarter on the back of improved footfalls and receding impact of Covid. As a result, companies are now resuming with their store expansion plans,” said a report by Motilal Oswal. CRISIL also said that the credit metrics of retailers support their expansion plans. “The credit ratio moderated in FY21 reflecting pandemic impact. Waning of pandemic-related disruptions resulted in sharp recovery in FY22,” it said. Brick-and-mortar expands online too However, not all their expanded investments will go into physical stores, as most of them are keen on providing a hybrid experience. Brick-and-mortar retailers are growing their online presence with apps, warehouses and more – likely fuelling growth in e-retailing as well. Last year, e-retailing grew at 26%, and this year, it’s poised to grow anywhere between 27-32%, according to CRISIL. The rating agency also said that omnichannel strategy will be the way forward as lower footfalls in stores can be compensated by higher online sales. Retail footfalls are still at 85-90% of their pre-pandemic levels . “Stores can display limited inventory. Hence, an omnichannel is a must,” the report said. Usually, the store size is much smaller. Sonos jumps 21% as strong pandemic sales prompt earnings beat

<ul><li>Auto sales in January 2023 were down 8% from the pre-Covid month of January 2020, says data from FADA. </li><li>Cost of ownership has shot up significantly while disposable income has not increased in the same ratio, says Manish Raj Singhania, president of FADA. </li><li>The 3-wheeler segment has almost clawed back to pre-pandemic levels. </li><li>FADA predicts that China’s factory activity gaining pace can fuel further growth in passenger vehicle sales. </li></ul>Compared to last year, India’s <keyword id="8834104" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="january-auto-sales" source="Orion">January auto sales</keyword> are robust as total vehicles sold increased by around 14%. But that, however, is not the whole story. Even as the pandemic seems to be behind us, auto sales have not yet reached their pre-Covid levels. As compared to January 2020, auto sales in January 2023 were down by 8%, says data by Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations or FADA. “While sentiments are improving at a snail’s pace and are better than what it was a year ago, rural market is yet to fully come to the party as cost of ownership has shot up significantly while disposable income has not increased in the same ratio,” said Manish Raj Singhania, president of FADA. A recent report by JM Financial also said that the Union Budget 2023-24 had no specific triggers for rural growth. That would affect their spending capability with a spillover effect on the 2-wheeler segment. “In the absence of a specific focus on the rural economy in the Union Budget for 2023-24, analysts don't see immediate triggers for revival in the rural economy. Moreover, in the absence of specific or enhancement of allocation towards the rural economy, we believe that the rural environment would have to revive on its own. Hence, we would view businesses dealing with price-sensitive low-ticket items as less likely to benefit,” the JM Financial report said. When compared to January 2021 and pre-covid month of January 2020, sales of two-wheelers fell by 7% and 13%, respectively. However, on a year-on-year basis (compared to January 2022), it did show a growth of 10%. The economic survey 2022-23 tabled in the Parliament said that rural wages will rise at a steady positive rate as inflation is expected to soften thus translating into rise in real wages. “We are hopeful that this will have its rub-off effect with a rise in 2-wheeler sales going ahead,” FADA says in its outlook. Three-wheelers (3Ws), on the other hand, are having a much better run. Not only did they show a robust growth since last year, they are also closing the gap with the pre-Covid levels. They are down by a mere 3% as compared to the pre-Covid levels with a robust year-on-year growth of 59%. “EV FAME-2 subsidy along with demand from commercial 3W space is fuelling healthy growth. The segment has shown tremendous resilience and has almost clawed back to pre-pandemic levels,” FADA said. It also hopes that the enhanced income tax rebate can accelerate the demand for 2Ws as well as entry-level passenger vehicles (PVs). The PV segment continues to perform well with a growth of 22% year-on-year. It has also grown 8% from its pre-Covid levels. “While good enquiry, healthy bookings and improved supplies are helping aid this segment, it is the entry level sub-segment which is still feeling the pinch,” said Singhania. While waiting periods for some models have come down, compact SUVs, SUVs and luxury vehicles continue to witness minimum waiting of 2-3 months. FADA predicts that with China’s factory activity once again gaining pace, global supplies of parts and semiconductors will see a recovery, thus aiding better vehicle supplies and lower waiting period in future. “This will further fuel growth for the already healthy passenger vehicle category,” the industry body says. The Commercial Vehicle (CV) category has also shown robust growth by growing 16% year-on-year, and 6% from the pre-Covid month of January 2020. Continued demand in the market due to replacement of fleet, growth in freight availability and government’s consistent push for infrastructure projects has helped the CV segment rise above pre-Covid numbers. “The capital outlay of ₹10 lakh crore for infrastructure spending will help aid CV sales, which is already witnessing an upswing,” FADA says, adding that reduction in surcharge for highest tax payers could also benefit high-end vehicle sales. January auto sales rise 14% y-o-y but sentiment improving at a snail’s pace, says FADA

Indian e-commerce is booming and grocery is the hottest segment within that. While everyone from Amazon and JioMart to DMart and Grofers use discounts as the primary luure, a recent research report says that BigBasket is leading the pack despite offering lesser discounts compared to most other players. This would be music to the ears of executives at the Tata Group, which bought BigBasket in May 2021 for an <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/tech/startups/tata-says-acquired-a-majority-stake-in-online-grocery-bigbasket/articleshow/83029366.cms">undisclosed amount</a>, with the goal of adding it to its up and coming super app Tata Neu. According to the report, BigBasket has about 9 million monthly active users, compared to JioMart and DMart’s 5 million each. Though the company has a discount rate of about 14%. JioMart and DMart, on the other hand, offer discounts at a good 17-18%. DMart and JioMart are offering deep discounts to catch up with BigBasket

The revenue has been verified by Business Insider. The following has been edited for length and clarity.As a young girl, I never thought I'd follow in my parents' footsteps. They moved from Albania to the US before I was born and owned a fashion line. I grew up traveling to trade shows all over Europe.I was always curious about my parents' businesses, but my passion was singing and acting. As a nine-year-old, I competed in Gjeniu I Vogel, a televised Albanian children's singing competition. As a teenager, I appeared in TV shows and movies like "Fresh Off the Boat," "The Wrong Husband," and "The Council."When the pandemic hit, I thought it was time to try something new. At age 17, I saw other teenagers on TikTok starting businesses. I purchased a $300 embroidery machine with my parents' help. I thought it would be a side hobby to earn some income. I didn't expect it to blow up. Soulmate Customs made over $1 million in sales in less than a year.It hasn't always been easy. There have been some failures in growth that were our fault. But even with failures, we've learned from our mistakes.<h2>I had some early success thanks to TikTok, but sales dried up fast</h2>I got the machine in December 2020, six months after graduating from high school. I unpacked it, opened up YouTube, and searched "how to embroider," I learned how to use it in a day. After a few weeks, I felt confident enough to start selling designs.I started with an Etsy embroidery shop before founding Soulmate Customs. Using an app called Procreate, I drew designs on my old iPad. Once I had a design I liked, I'd put it on a USB and plug it into the machine, which automatically digitized the design to embroider.I got a few orders initially, but things boomed when I posted a design inspired by Olivia Rodrigo's song Driver's License on TikTok. The video got around 4 million views, and my shop had over 300 orders in three months. I thought, "I've made it!"Once the song's hype died down in 2021, the orders dried up on my Etsy shop, and I freaked out.<h2>A birthday gift for my mom was the spark for Soulmate Customs</h2>Around the time orders dwindled, my mom's birthday was coming up. I thought, "Why don't I take a picture of me and her, outline it, and embroider it with the embroidery machine I already have?"When my mom opened the shirt with the embroidered outline of us, she started crying. After about four days of posting, we got our first order. I did a mini-vlog of making and shipping that first order. About 30 minutes after posting the TikTok, we saw floods of new followers and supportive comments. The video was blowing up. It ended up getting 3.7 million views.I started hearing the sale "cha-ching" on my phone repeatedly. I was sitting with my mom on the couch, and we looked at each other in shock. We got over 1,400 orders in the first month and made over $100,000 in sales. It was a huge jump-start.<h2>The business became a family affair immediately</h2>When those orders came in, the business was still one $300 embroidery machine in my parents' house. There was no way that I could fulfill every single order on time. I told my mom we'd have to shut down the store.My mom said we weren't shutting down. She sent my dad to look for office space. We rented out the second office we saw and have moved twice since then. We invested in four commercial embroidery machines and hired anyone we could find just to help us fulfill all of the orders. Thankfully, we did it successfully.The business became a family affair. My mom runs the entire production and back-end parts of the business. We call her the "Kris Jenner" of the family.My dad deals with the operations. He fixes machines, buys new machines we need, and trains staff. My older brother Kenny handles everything marketing — running ads, email, and SMS campaigns. A big part of his work is also accounting. We are fully family-owned.<h2>Posting constantly means momentum doesn't fizzle out</h2>I knew from my Olivia Rodrigo success that after a business blows up on social media, it's hard to keep the fire going. So, I knew creating a lot of content would be key.Once I get into the office, the first thing I do is post a video. I post five to eight times per day on TikTok and Instagram. It's the most important part of my day.I work with trending sounds and video formats. I see what's going viral and copy the trend. Drama also sells. For example, I've made so many drama videos where I include customers who reach out to us with their stories. In one video, a customer reached out to us saying that one of the custom orders she saw on our page was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@soulmatecustoms/video/7171546373848861994?_r=1&amp;_t=8iBNGq3TxSl">her boyfriend ordering for another girl</a>.Posting a lot content on TikTok has been key to keeping our business thriving. We hit $1 million in revenue in 2022 in just 11 months.<h2>Relying on virality is tough</h2>We've had huge ups and downs because we rely on virality, which can be tough. Views aren't consistent, so I'm looking for more stable ways to grow the business this year.We're still trying to figure out how we can keep on scaling at all periods of the year, not just whenever we go viral or during seasonal peaks. Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, and Father's day are when we see a bump in orders.<h2>As a young founder, I haven't always made the right calls</h2>When we hit $1 million, we had a super small team.One of the mistakes that I made in growing the business last year was over-hiring. Because we grew so quickly initially, I thought more team members would help us keep growing. We hired graphic designers, extra content creators, and videographers. I overhired, and it got very costly very quickly. It was a big lesson. My parents didn't push me to go to college. Now that we're at seven figures, I'm fighting with everything I can to keep it going. It's been very stressful. There have been times when I've been so overwhelmed that I don't know if I can keep going.Reaching out to other people on social media has helped a lot. Instagram has been a big platform for me to make connections with business people and others who are doing cool things with their lives.
