For the first quarter of the current financial year, DMart’s parent company Avenue Supermart has posted a 88% fall in profits from ₹334.59 crore to a mere ₹48 crore. DMart’s share price reflected the investors’ disappointment with a 4% fall on Monday (July 13). While DMart said that the company is less anxious now than it was during April 2020, analysts say the causes of worry are only beginning. The biggest of them is a challenge from Asia’s richest man, Mukesh Ambani. Higher costs at stores while customers head to kiranas One of Damani’s biggest advantages was the presence of DMart in Tier-II cities, reaching out to a larger market. But analysts at HDFC Securities believe that this very strength has turned into its weakness. “Higher exposure to some of the most impacted Indian districts and store closures in Apr (50% of network closed in Apr) manifested into a severe footfall loss, ergo revenue loss for D-MART,” said the report. DMart began with a single store in Mumbai’s Powai in 2002. Today, DMart is present in over 214 locations across Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, NCR, Tamil Nadu, Punjab and Rajasthan. The higher number of stores also meant DMart had to incur higher allowances for staff (it offered a hardship allowance to employees) and also had to bear sanitization costs for the stores. DMart too acknowledged that ‘organized retail’ failed to mark during the lockdown as local kirana stores <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/retail/news/jiomart-dunzo-swiggy-and-likes-want-to-ride-the-trust-earned-by-indias-kirana-stores-during-the-lockdown/articleshow/76826479.cms">came to the rescue.</a> The company said customers didn’t put ‘value’ as a priority during lockdown. “There is also a sales channel of traditional trade which is smart, agile and resourceful. India still has a strong and resilient network of small shops and neighbourhood stores. They came roaring back after the first 2 or 3 weeks of lockdown serving the needs of an anxious customer the way the customer wanted it - quickly over the counter or through home deliveries,” said the company in a regulatory filing. A bigger challenge if Reliance and Future Retail join hands DMart’s rise was credited to its ability to outbid kirana stores with heavy discounts powered by smart sourcing and it wooed middle class indians into organised retail. But now the question is – can he beat someone with deep pockets like Mukesh Ambani? If India’s richest man Mukesh Ambani decides to buy Future Retail and alongwith it will acquire the Bigbazaar chain of stores. Reliance is reportedly close to closing the deal with Kishore Biyani’s Future Retail, as the corporate giant is doubling down investments in the Indian retail sector with its own venture JioMart. <div type="image" title="mukesh ambani" msid="76937031" hostid="261"></div> Ambani is already into grocery retail but bagging Big Bazaar would give him an unprecedented reach and market share that would be difficult to beat. Several of the states in which DMart is operational – Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Karnataka, have once again enforced strict lockdowns. In addition, in certain cities authorities are once again insisting on selling only essential products. Hence our future revenues continue to remain uncertain,” said the company.

 <keyword id="849288" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Aditya-Birla-Retail-Limited">Aditya Birla Retail Limited</keyword> (<keyword id="148276" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="ABRL">ABRL</keyword>) has passed a board resolution that allows shares to be issued on a preferential basis to either Kanishtha Finance &amp; Investment or RKN Retail, promoted by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Aditya-Birla-Group-would-soon-allow-employees-to-take-time-off-for-pursuing-their-entrepreneurial-ideas/articleshow/51024584.cms">Birla</a>, his family and some closely-held companies of the family. These details were revealed by the privately-held company in a filing with the Registrar of Companies.

 "The board resolution was related to an enabling provision to allow the company increase the authorised capital to meet its general corporate expenses in the ordinary course of business and also to refinance its existing debt portfolio," <keyword id="271065" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Pranab-Barua">Pranab Barua</keyword>, business director for apparel and retail business at <keyword id="44373" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Aditya-Birla-Group">Aditya Birla Group</keyword>, told ET.

Since its inception over 9 years ago, ABRL has seen losses of Rs 5,320 crore; however, for the year ended March 2015, the losses were reduced by 5% and brought down to Rs 571 crore. 
 
The reason behind this is said to be their strategy of focusing on <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/One-of-Aditya-Birlas-cos-is-heading-for-a-London-Stock-Exchange-listing-soon/articleshow/49448895.cms">profitable markets</a>.

This, the bank says, was due to an increase in provisions for the June quarter. Beyond the profits, RBL Bank’s fundamentals remain strong. Its liquidity coverage ratio stood at 155%, as against the 100% mandated by RBI. This means that in the short-term, the bank has enough cash to meet its obligations. RBL Bank’s credit card business – which constitutes 22% of the company’s total loan portfolio – has been a fast growing segment for the company. RBL Bank slumps 20% after CEO goes on leave

Washington, US employers slashed 140,000 <keyword id="11018" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jobs">jobs</keyword> in December 2020, the first monthly decline in <keyword id="6355127" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="employment">employment</keyword> since April 2020, as recent Covid-19 spikes have stalled the recovery of the <keyword id="6357125" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Labour-Market">labour market</keyword>, an official report said. "The decline in payroll employment reflects the recent increase in coronavirus (COVID-19) cases and efforts to contain the pandemic," the Labour Department's Bureau of Labour Statistics (BLS) said in its monthly employment report. The BLS report noted that employment in leisure and hospitality declined by 498,000, with three-quarters of the decrease in food services and drinking places, by 372,000. Since February 2020, employment in leisure and hospitality has been down by 3.9 million, or 23.2%. Employment in private education, meanwhile, decreased by 63,000 in December, the report showed, noting that employment in the industry has fallen by 450,000 since February. Government employment also declined by 45,000 in the month. Since February 2020, government employment overall has been cut by 1.3 million. In December, job losses in leisure and hospitality and in private education were partially offset by gains in professional and business services, retail trade, and construction, according to the Bureau's report. The report also showed that growth in total non-farm payroll employment for October was revised up by 44,000 to 654,000, and the gain for November was revised up by 91,000 to 336,000. Amid widespread Covid-19 shutdowns in March and April last year, 22 million Americans lost their jobs. The latest data showed that the number of <keyword id="6368046" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="unemployed">unemployed</keyword> in December remained unchanged at 10.7 million, which is about 5 million higher than pre-pandemic level in February 2020. The unemployment rate, which has been trending down over the past seven months, remained unchanged at 6.7% in December, the report showed, indicating the disruption to the labour market recovery. The unemployment rate in December was down by 8 <keyword id="1648970" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="percentage-points">percentage points</keyword> from its recent high in April 2020 but is 3.2 percentage points higher than its pre-pandemic level in February, the Bureau noted. Weekly initial jobless claims have been largely declining in the past few months, but the trend was recently reversed in the weeks ending November 14 and November 21, 2020, and then in the weeks ending December 5 and December 12, 2020. The Services Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) registered 57.2% in December, 1.3 percentage point higher than the November reading, according to the latest Services ISM Report on Business. The employment index, however, fell by 3.3 percentage points to 48.2%, marking the first contraction after three consecutive months of growth. <keyword id="44950" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kishore-Biyani">Kishore Biyani</keyword>’s <keyword id="44949" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Future-group">Future Group</keyword> has resumed talks to either buy or merge <keyword id="49861" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Aditya-Birla-Retail">Aditya Birla Retail</keyword>’s ‘More’ supermarket business and cement its position further in the retail sector. 
 
The talks about the buyout or merger had begun a while ago but did not materialise. The discussions have begun again now. 
 
If the deal sees light of the day, this will be Future Group's fourth acquisition of food and grocery chain in less than five years. 
 Previously, Future Group bought Big Apple in 2012, Nilgiri's in 2014 and merged <keyword id="117289" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharti-Retail">Bharti Retail</keyword> with itself in 2015. 
 
Aditya Birla Retail is the fourth-largest supermarket chain in India after Future Group, Reliance Retail and D'Mart with 500 stores and revenues of Rs 2,948 crore during 2014-15. 
 
Meanwhile, this acquisition or merger will also bring in more debt to Biyani. 
 
ABRL had a net loss of Rs 571 crore in FY14-15 and total debt of Rs 5,232 crore as of March 31, 2015. Future has a debt burden of Rs 4,941 crore, and high interest outgo has been impacting profits. 
 "Traditionally, brick-and-mortar retailers have not been innovative enough to extend sales from their stores to online. Online can be a 'bolt on' to the offline stores. An offline store can cover only 2-3 km radius of catchment. With online, one store can cover up to 12 km radius," K Radhakrishnan, cofounder of <keyword id="2817480" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="GrocerMax">GrocerMax</keyword>, told ET.
