The concern over rising costs elevated after one of the leading players, Asian Paints, reported a fall in profit due to high raw material prices, which is further expected to remain high for some time. Raw material prices have been pushed up due to the high crude oil prices. Note that half of the material used by paint companies are crude oil derivatives. Asian Paints reported a decline in net profit to ₹595 crore in September, below analysts’ expectations. "Steep inflation seen in raw material prices, since the beginning of this calendar year, has been phenomenal and has impacted gross margins across all businesses in the quarter," said Amit Syngle, managing director and chief executive of Asian Paints in a statement to an exchange on October 21. Adding to it, global chip shortage could impact supply of tinting machines which are key for paint dealers. The chip shortage could <a href="https://www.livemint.com/market/mark-to-market/paint-manufacturers-may-face-disruption-from-chip-shortage-11632765366605.html">reportedly</a> impact the supply of tinting machines and the expansion plans of paint companies. These machines help shops create different shades of paints within the store, in line with the requirement of customers. Dealers who use tinting machines do not have to hold large amounts of shades in stock. “We expect delays in (the supply of) tinting machines to remain for a few quarters for most paint companies. We expect less impact on top two companies, Asian Paints and Berger Paints, as they already have a high tinting machine penetration compared to smaller peers," said analysts at Edelweiss Securities, <a href="https://www.livemint.com/market/mark-to-market/paint-manufacturers-may-face-disruption-from-chip-shortage-11632765366605.html">reportedly</a>. Paint makers stress over high raw material costs and fewer tinting machines even as festive demand picks up

On Friday, the <keyword id="70622" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dow-Jones-Industrial-Average">Dow Jones Industrial Average</keyword> slipped 130.40 points, or 0.47 per cent, to 27,901.98. The S&amp;P 500 fell 28.48 points, or 0.84 per cent, to 3,357.01. The <keyword id="165439" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nasdaq-Composite-Index">Nasdaq Composite Index</keyword> decreased 140.19 points, or 1.27 per cent, to 10,910.28, Xinhua news agency reported. Shares of major US tech giants such as Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix and Google-parent Alphabet all closed lower. Of the S&amp;P 500 sector level, communication services and technology dipped 1.84 per cent and 0.84 per cent, respectively, among the worst performers. US-listed Chinese companies traded mostly lower, with six of the top 10 stocks by weight in the S&amp;P US Listed China 50 index ending the day on a downbeat note. The moves came after data showed jobless claims in the United States declined only slightly last week. US initial jobless claims, a rough way to measure layoffs, came in at 860,000 in the week ending September 12, following an upwardly revised level of 893,000 in the prior week, the Department of Labor reported Thursday. The reading slightly exceeded the median economist estimate of 850,000 compiled by Bloomberg. Continuing claims, or the number of people already receiving benefits, stood at 12.63 million for the week ending September 5, showed the report. Wall Street also digested <keyword id="1860048" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-Federal-Reserve">the Federal Reserve</keyword>'s latest decision on monetary policy. The US central bank on Wednesday held its benchmark interest rate steady at the record-low level of near zero and promised to maintain this target range until labour market conditions have improved to reach maximum employment and inflation has picked up to its desirable level. Dow Jones tumbles 130 points, snaps a 4-day gaining streak as tech stocks struggle

Marred by high cost of input and gloomy consumer sentiment in the real estate sector, it may be a dull Diwali for the industry players in the property market. According to a study by industry body <keyword id="6355988" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Assocham">ASSOCHAM</keyword>, there has been 30% increase in the launch of new residential projects every quarter this year, which has resulted in the inventory further going up by 6.7% in the same period. 
	 
	“After four consecutive quarters of muted launches, such activities showed improvement at the country level. Ahead of general elections, developers had launched many projects to gain competitive advantage and, at the same time, anticipated a recovery in market conditions post-polls,” suggested the study done by the industry body and global real estate services firm Jones Lang LaSalle. 
	 
	However, the launches did not really pick up post elections as residential property buyers took a cautious approach. “While there was an improvement in new launches, sales continued to remain low despite developers offering attractive pricing schemes and discounts to attract buyers,” stated the study. 
	 
	The survey has also projected that in the current fiscal year, the growth will be slower between 4% and 8% in Tier-1 cities. Nevertheless, the capital values in cities such as Pune, Kolkata and Hyderabad may grow at a comparatively faster pace, considering their low floor prices. 
	 
	“Developers in Tier-1 cities likely to continue liquidate their stocks by offering good pre-launch and pricing promotions,” revealed the study. 
	In terms of the prices, the residential property price across the country is expected to grow at 10% to 12% in 2014 considering the fact that inflation is still high in the country. 
	 
	“Liquidity and high level of leverage remain big issues with the real estate developers. These two issues can ultimately get resolved with pick up in the economy and a smart recovery in demand for housing units. But there is a lag between improvement in macro picture and its impact on the real estate market, particularly in the residential segment which is highly sensitive to the interest rates and the job market, which needs to be robust for the demand rebound,” said D S Rawat, secretary general of ASSOCHAM. 
	 
	In terms of return on investment, the average capital values of residential properties in the top seven markets have been steadily recovering since 2009. “Since the trough in second half of 2009-10, Mumbai has led the increase in average capital value (ACV) with nearly 59% growth, followed by Bangalore with 43.5% rise in ACV and the NCR-Delhi 33.9%. In the case of Chennai, it was 41.09% while it was only 25.2% for Hyderabad. However, Kolkata and Pune have been major movers, showing appreciation of 50.7% and 47.8 per cent respectively during this period”, added the study.

A month ahead of Diwali, retail investors chose to tank up on gold funds, going by data released by the Association of Mutual Funds of India (AMFI). Moreover, the weightage on sectors like auto, utilities and insurance stocks increased significantly while sectors such as banking saw a moderation. Investments in gold ETFs (exchange traded funds) grew by a whopping 472% at ₹841 crore in October compared to ₹147 crore in the same period last year. But that is not all, retail investors are now mature and picking themes with a view on higher value creation over the long term. The month of October reflects this trend quite clearly. As large caps continue to struggle, retail investors continue to bulk up on small and midcap funds that have already delivered over 40% returns this year. After a short blip in September, small cap funds attracted higher inflows to the tune of around ₹4,495 crore in October, up from ₹2,678 crore in September. According to ICRA Analytics, for a country to grow it should grow intrinsically strong and adopt a bottoms-up approach. The government is focusing on this and is making policies to strengthen such small companies. This is likely to augur well for small and mid-sized firms and would help in higher value creation. G. Pradeepkumar, CEO, Union Mutual Fund, says: “If one takes into account the allocations to mid and small caps in categories such as multicap, flexicap and large &amp; mid Cap, it appears that anywhere from 40% to 50% of the total net flows could have gone to mid and small-cap stocks. While the long-term outlook for these companies is positive, investors should remain cautious about the possibility of short-term market volatility and consider a staggered approach to their investments.” It is not just betting on smaller stocks that will lead to higher value creation that shows that the Indian retail investor has evolved. Analysis shows that the pace of redemptions slowed down to Rs 26,000 crore (down 14.8% month-on-month). Consequently, net inflows accelerated to ₹22,000 crore in October from ₹15,500 crore in September 2023. Financialisation of savings is a big trend that has been playing out since 2016 in India. The retail investor’s faith in the India story has not faded despite the headwinds. Explains Ashwini Kumar, Head Market Data, ICRA Analytics, “Net inflows during the month of October 2023 have grown by a whooping 473% at ₹80,528 crore, as against ₹14,047 crore in October 2022.” The sectoral shift The story gets even more interesting when one digs deeper into the monthly flows. Net inflows into equity-oriented schemes grew by 113% at ₹19,957 crore in October, up from ₹9,390 crore in the same period last year. According to analysis done by Motilal Oswal Financial Services (MOFS), the month saw notable changes in the sector and stock allocation of funds. Retail investors are doubling down on automobiles, utilities, consumer and insurance sectors. On a MoM basis, the weights of all these sectors increased while that of banks (Private &amp; PSU) , technology, capital goods, and metals moderated. The weight of automobiles jumped to an almost five-year (59-month) high of 8.4% (up 10 basis points month-on-month and +70 basis point year-on-year) in October 2023. Utilities’ weight climbed for the second consecutive month to a 38-month high of 3.9% (+10bp MoM, +60bp YoY), says MOFS. The weightage for private banks moderated for the fourth consecutive month to 18.7% (-20bp MoM, flat YoY) in October 2023. PSU Banks overall weight declined to 3% (-20bp MoM, -70bp YoY) and this is the lowest since February 2021.

The mega IPO of Life Insurance Corporation of India (<keyword id="6367143" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lic" source="Orion">LIC</keyword>) will be out by the end of the current fiscal, a senior Central government official said on Monday. According to Tuhin Kanta Pandey, Secretary, Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM), the IPO plan is on course. "Some media speculation doubting the feasibility of <keyword id="7922409" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lic-ipo" source="Orion">LIC IPO</keyword> this fiscal year is not correct. It is reiterated that plan is on course for the IPO in the last quarter of this fiscal," the Secretary tweeted. The IPO is expected to become the biggest one in India and it may fetch the government around Rs 1 lakh crore. Post the Union Budget FY22, the government has taken several legislative and executive steps to pave way for the mega IPO.
