<br /><ul><li>An image claiming to be of Diwali lights seen from space makes the rounds on social networks every year.</li><li>The image is in fact many images to show how population has grown in India from 1992 to 2003.</li><li>The only thing that's true is that it's an image of lights.</li></ul>Every year a colourful picture of India makes the rounds on Diwali. The only thing is people claim that it’s a picture of India taken from space on Diwali night. In reality, it’s a picture created by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (<a href="http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/dmsp/interest/india.html">NOAA</a>) to highlight the population growth in India — back in 2003.<br /><br />And, it’s not just one photo. It’s a many images stitched together with overlaid data.<br /><br />

<br />The one fact that’s accurate is that it’s a picture of lights. The white lights show where city were visible before 1992, blue lights for 1992, green lights for 1998 and red for 2003.<br /><br />Another picture that's commonly circulated, claiming to be of India on Diwali night, is an actual satellite image of India's night from an ordinary day. <br /><br />

<br />If you want to see a picture of India from space on Diwali night, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (<a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/79682/south-asian-night-lights">NASA</a>) has one from 2012 taken by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on board the Suomi NPP satellite.<br /><br />

It’s time India got over the fake Diwali picture

<ul><li> The National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Earth Observatory shared an image of <keyword id="8241008" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="salt-ponds-in-gujarat">salt ponds in Gujarat</keyword> — India’s largest salt producer.<br /></li><li>Gujarat’s Bhavnagar and the Gulf of Khambhat are highlighted in the image.<br /></li><li>Similar salt deposits have been captured by NASA of other major salt producing regions around the world.<br /></li></ul>India is the third largest salt producer in the world and most of it can be traced back one region — the western state of Gujarat. And, now the salt bearing region was captured from space.<br /><br /><div type="image" title="spacesalt1_edited" msid="71681847" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Salt evaporation ponds in Gujarat&amp;#39;s Bhavnagar&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div>

<br />Gujarat accounts for three quarters of India’s annual salt production and is home to half of the country’s salt workers.<br /><br />The image captured by the Operational Land Imager (<a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/145756/indias-largest-salt-producer">OLI</a>) aboard the Landsat 8 Satellite shows the city of Bhavnagar — one of the leading salt-producing districts in Gujarat — on February 28, 2019.<br />The colourful rectangles in the image are salt evaporation ponds, according to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Earth Observatory. It’s a feature often found in major salt-producing areas.<br /><br /><div type="image" title="spacesalt2_edited" msid="71681869" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Gujarat&amp;#39;s Gulf of Khambhat  adjacent to Bhavnagar&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div>
<br />The Gulf of Khambhat is also seen in the image. In the past, it was <a href="http://shodhganga.inflibnet.ac.in/jspui/bitstream/10603/197158/13/13_chapter%205.pdf">responsible</a> for 24% of the salt production in the state. Because of the abundance of salt in the area, it is also home to the Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute.<br /><br /><strong>Here are some other salt producing regions captured by NASA:</strong><br />

New Delhi, Rajshree Saraf, 24, recently shifted to New York to pursue her dream of becoming a creative technologist. She has never been away from home, not even once.<br /><br />This year, due to international travel limitations and the alarming rise in the Covid-19 cases, she will spend her <keyword id="188" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Diwali">Diwali</keyword> away from her family and friends in Kolkata. <br /><br />"My friends have a ritual to organise a cards party every Diwali and we spend hours playing games, drinking and chatting. Thanks to <keyword id="790242" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="WhatsApp">WhatsApp</keyword> video calls, this Diwali will be no different for me. In fact, I am also planning to create some personalised Diwali stickers on WhatsApp that I can share with my friends," Saraf told IANS.<br /><br />The story of working professionals Bani Singh, 29 and Abir Kapur, also 29, who just tied the knot is similar. <br /><br />Abir works in financial services in Hong Kong and came to Delhi for his wedding, just before Diwali. <br /><br />With Bani still figuring her citizenship situation amid Abir's work commitments, the newly-weds' first Diwali will be on WhatsApp.<br /><br />"It is our first Diwali together and we haven't stopped discussing our virtual plans. Abir created a WhatsApp group in which we post pictures, videos and send voice notes to each other so that we feel connected and together on our first Diwali as a couple," they informed.<br /><br />For 400 million users in India, WhatsApp video calls are the easiest medium to connect to their loved ones in the festive season especially in the social distancing days.<br /><br />Family group video calls are also growing as WhatsApp has doubled the number of participants in a video or voice call from four to eight people at a time on its platform.<br /><br />People on average are spending over 15 billion minutes talking each day on WhatsApp calls.<br /><br />Captain Pankaj Bahukhandi, 57, serves as a Master Mariner for a shipping company. <br /><br />Being away for the latter part of the year, he will not be able to spend Diwali with his family in Dehradun. <br /><br />"Like every other time, we will speak on WhatsApp calls and share pictures, videos and voice notes on our family WhatsApp group so that I feel emotionally connected with my family amid the festivities," he said.<br /><br />"One app that we are the most comfortable using is WhatsApp. It is so easy to make calls and send pictures. We also put WhatsApp status for our grandkids on their birthdays," added Rajdeep Tewari and Sandhya Tewari, grandparents to four children, who are working professionals in different countries in the world.<br /><br />

<br /><br />Almansoori took off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on 25 September 2019 along with rookie US astronaut Jessica Meir and Russian commander Oleg Skripochka. He’s only one of two people who were selected for the UAE space programme in 2018.<br /><br />Like numerous international astronauts, Almansoori comes from a military background, who flew F-16s.<br /><br />The astronaut is set to return to Earth on Thursday after he completes the eight-day mission.<br /><br /><br /><br />

<p>We've been regularly bombarded with images of the Earth from above, thanks to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/best-pictures-videos-from-chris-hadfield-2013-5">Commander Chris Hadfield on the International Space Station</a>, and the dozens of Earth-observing satellites circling our planet, but it's not too often we see an image of the moon from space. </p>
<p>The ISS hovers 250 miles above Earth, so it also has a spectacular view of our closest celestial neighbor. </p>
<p>Luckily ISS commander <span>Maxim Suraev just published this fabulous shot to <a href="http://instagram.com/p/uqa6POJR4q/?utm_source=partner&amp;utm_medium=embed&amp;utm_campaign=photo">the Roscosmos Instagram feed</a>. He caught the moon on a cloudy day, so you can see the peaks from the fluffy clouds below. You can see the out-stretched shadows cast by, what appears to be, a couple of cumulonimbus clouds, with the lonely moon floating in the background.</span></p>

<p>This last image depicts a distant Moon, with just a small portion reflecting the sunlight. To observers on Earth, this would appear to be a crescent Moon. The ominous bright-blue band closing in on the Moon is Earth's atmosphere. This image was also taken aboard the ISS by an astronaut from <a href="http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/expeditions/expedition26/">Expedition 26</a>. </p>

A Surreal Picture Of Tropical Storm Arthur From Space

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>SpaceX just completed the first successful launch and <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/spacex-landed-its-rocket-for-the-first-time-2015-12">landing of their Falcon 9 rocket</a> at Cape Canaveral in Florida, on December 21.<p>Shortly after the rocket <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/spacex-rocket-launch-cape-canaveral-2015-12">launched around 8:30 p.m.</a>, SpaceX recovered the first stage of the rocket by landing it vertically on a landing pad.</p><p>It was a huge accomplishment for SpaceX, and the company is now well on its way toward revolutionizing spaceflight.</p><p>Here are some of the best shots from the historic launch and landing.</p>

<p>It looks like a witch screaming out into space. But, as a nebula, it's really a space cloud that's brewing up baby stars. If she scares you, not to worry. She's hundreds of light-years away in the Orion constellation.</p>

Here's An Awesome Picture Of A Witch's Head In Space From NASA

<p>The amazing picture below shows the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/a-huge-meteor-just-exploded-over-russia-2013-2">meteor that hit Chelyabinsk, Russia</a>, on February 15. It was captured by the Meteosat Second Generation satellites and dug up from Simon R. Proud from the University of Copenhagen.</p>
<p>Proud published his images in the <a href="http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/10.1002/%28ISSN%291944-8007" target="_blank">journal Geophysical Research Letters</a> and says that the same method he used to find the pictures could be used in the future to find images of other meteors. Thanks to <a href="http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2013/01/space-photo-of-the-day-2/?pid=8621" target="_blank">Wired Science's space photo of the day</a> for calling our attention to these two awesome images.</p>
