With the samples of four more Covid positive cases getting confirmed for <keyword id="12617922" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Omicron-variant" source="Orion">Omicron variant</keyword> on Monday, Kerala now has 15 such cases, said State <keyword id="6356374" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Health-Minister" source="Orion">Health Minister</keyword> Veena George. All the four have been under the close watch of the health authorities and were in quarantine. Hence, there was no reason to suspect a further spread, said the minister. All the four new cases were in the state capital district, and of these three are from the same family. All the 15 cases were reported to be stable. Five more <keyword id="1609796" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="omicron" source="Orion">Omicron</keyword> cases have been detected in Karnataka, which took the overall tally of infections caused by the new Covid-19 variant to 19, state Health Minister K. Sudhakar said on Monday. According to the Minister, the new cases were reported from Dharwad, Bhadravathi, Udupi and Mangaluru districts. Even though the new patients are stable, the health department is on high alert as the new variant has been found among hostel students with no travel history. So far, 49 samples have been sent for genomic sequencing tests and their reports are awaited. According to the State Surveillance Unit Commissionerate of Health and Family Welfare, a 54-year-old fully vaccinated male patient from Dharwad has tested positive for Omicron. His travel history or contact with international travellers is being ascertained, health officials said. His sample was collected on December 4 from DIMHANS in Dharwad after he positive for Covid the previous day. He is currently healthy and is under home isolation. Four of his primary and 133 secondary contacts have been tracked and tested. Their results were negative. Another 20-year-old Omicron positive woman's travel history and contact with international travellers is being ascertained. Her samples were collected on December 4 from a college in Shivamogga district's Bhadravathi town where she is living in a hostel, according to the health officials. As many as 218 of her contacts have been tested and 27 of them were Covid positive. All samples have been sent for Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS). The authorities are also tracing travel or contact history of a 73-year-old man and an 82-year-old man who tested positive for the new variant. Their samples were collected from a private hospital in Udupi. At present they have no Covid-19 symptoms. The youngest member of their family, aged 11 years, has also tested positive. As many as 42 primary contacts and 293 secondary contacts of a 19-year-old Omicron positive college student from Mangaluru, has also been tested. His samples have also been sent for genome sequencing. Kerala and Karnataka logs 10 new cases of Omicron variant

"The estimated loss is about Rs 8,084 crore, of which Rs 5,000 crore occurred due to infrastructure damages. Also, agriculture and allied sectors suffered flood damage of Rs 3,000 crore as incessant rains occurred right before the harvesting period," said a <keyword id="611199" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="government-statement">government statement</keyword>. On Wednesday, the <keyword id="4066613" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="central-government-team">Central government team</keyword> which visited five districts to assess flood damages in the southern state called on Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. For the last two days, the team toured flood-affected East Godavari, West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur and Anantapur districts. On a request from Reddy, the team visited Anantapur, considering the groundnut crop was extensively damaged. Reddy requested the team to help as much as possible on humanitarian grounds to cope with the damage. He asked the team to relax frequently asked questions while buying damaged crops from farmers as they may suffer even bigger losses. The Chief Minister explained to the central officers that the state government has been providing input subsidy to farmers to cover up losses in the same crop season, even as the subsidy for Kharif losses between May and September has already been paid. Reddy appealed to the team to compensate the flood damages as soon as possible. He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for deputing a central team to Andhra Pradesh. Andhra Pradesh estimates damages worth ₹8,084 crore due to floods, heavy rains

<keyword id="45475" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Larsen-Toubro">Larsen &amp; Toubro</keyword> has emerged as the lowest bidder at Rs 3,166 crore to construct a 20-km, four-lane road bridge across the River Brahmaputra from Dhubri to Phulbari on NH 127-B for <keyword id="10258773" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-national-highways-">the National Highways &amp;</keyword> <keyword id="1106521" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Infrastructure-Development-Corporation-Ltd">Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd</keyword>. The bridge will connect two eastern states -- Assam and Meghalaya. It will be the longest road bridge (18.36 km) over a river in the country. The project is being financed by JICA (<keyword id="6395487" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="japan-international-cooperation-agency">Japan International Cooperation Agency</keyword>). The bridge will feature Extradosed Spans of 125 M for 12.63 km, a 60 M Approach Viaduct of 5.74 km and an approach road of almost a km. It is expected to be completed by 2026-27 the four-lane bridge will be built along the National Highway 127-B. The proposed bridge, considered strategic, will connect the state of Assam and Meghalaya with the rest of the nation, reducing the detouring road distance by about 203 km from Dhubri to Phulbari, which lie on the either side of the Brahmaputra before it flows into Bangladesh. Currently, those who travel across these states either take the Naranarayan bridge, which is a huge inconvenience as it is 60 km upstream, or, alternatively, row across the river in small boats, which can take about two and-a- half hours. This journey is considered especially risky in the rainy season when the river flows above the danger mark. National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) is the executing agency. On the Dhubri side (North Bank), the approach - which includes an embankment and viaduct -- will be around 4.3 km, while that on the Phulbari side (South Bank) will be around 2.3 km. Larsen & Toubro emerges lowest bidder for India's longest river bridge in Northeast

The latest quarterly loss also significantly lower compared to the loss of ₹593.4 crore in the preceding 3 months, thanks to the 60% fall in overall expenses. <ul><li>The pandemic-induced lockdown accelerated <keyword id="618493" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="digital-marketing">digital marketing</keyword>’s adoption rate in India. </li><li>A lot of brands have a digital-first and digital-only approach, while there are brands that want to start and stay only on digital. </li><li>So will this be a strong enough push for clients to invest a lion’s share on digital? We reach out to digital agencies to understand what we can expect in the future as digital takes precedence. </li></ul>Digital marketing has taken precedence over all mediums since the outbreak of coronavirus. According to DAN’s digital report released in January this year, digital marketing was expected to grow by 10.9% and reach ₹75,952 crore by the end of 2020. However, with the nationwide lockdown, print, radio, OOH, in-cinema advertising saw a massive drop, enabling further acceleration in digital’s overall growth. 2019 was also another year with its own set of challenges. With the economic slowdown, advertisers decided to cut back on spends and market sentiments reached a new low but despite those hurdles, digital continued to flourish. Now with reading news, catching up with friends, dating, hanging out and many other social activities becoming virtual, the whole market dynamics have altered. This has led to marketers rethinking their strategies and digital agencies introspecting on how they can lead the change. As markets are now slowly opening up, we reached out to experts to find out if the ad revenue pie will change, too. Experts opined that most advertising budgets and brands will be digital-centric in the times to come once we recover from the dent that COVID-19 has created. Unny Radhakrishnan, CEO, Digitas India said, "Digital always had a year-on-year healthy growth. More often the growth stories are reported based on how much digital media spends are growing. While that is clearly an indication of growth, the current situation is triggering accelerated growth not just in digital media spends, but in the overall approach to digitisation. There is a renewed focus on digitisation of all customer touch points. Consumers are becoming increasingly comfortable with digital interfaces - from virtual showrooms to OTT to digital news subscriptions to e-commerce. So brands will continue to invest in this transformation and investments could be significantly skewed on to digital. Most of our conversations and engagements with our clients are in the areas of these transformations and building digital brands." However, digital advertising will take some time to get its due back. Shamsuddin Jasani, Group MD, Isobar South Asia, highlighted that 95% of the ad revenue still comes from traditional beauty, FMCG and auto brands, who weren’t fully operational during the lockdown. He predicts a 40% drop in the overall digital revenue this year. “Consumption has gone through the roof for various forms of content ranging from video, gaming to education. Ramayan and news viewership also gave TV a push. Unfortunately, the clients aren't able to keep up with the pace. So far, only 5% of ad revenue comes from a pure digital brand and 95% still comes from a traditional FMCG or auto brand. They’ll start spending in the days to come. Apart from that, e-comm players told me that 75% of their sales came back in lockdown 3.0. Hence, people are going to put their best bets on digital again. Lockdown did have a long-term impact because the ad spends have cut down,” said Jasani. Ahmed Aftab Naqvi, CEO and Co-founder, Gozoop says an ‘even bigger uptick awaits us.’ “Digital spends are going to grow exponentially in the post-COVID era. CEO’s, CFO’s &amp; CMO’s are experiencing the benefits of having a digital-only marketing strategy and once they have tested success, I don’t see them resorting to other forms of advertising, at least in the short to medium term. There will be an increased focus on martech and performance marketing strategies. I also expect inbound marketing and performance-led influencer marketing to become a critical tool in the arsenal of most digital first marketing teams.” Sharing why digital has seen unhampered growth year-on-year despite the volatile environment in India, Sanjay Mehta, Joint CEO, Mirum India said, “It was due to various advantages that it offers, including sharp targeting, being very measurable, being able to track the ROI well, very efficient to create and manage campaigns, usable for small and large budgets, ease of starting, stopping, and tweaking campaigns, and not needing to stay committed to a creative or a medium, for long periods of time, etc. For all these reasons, digital advertising has been growing for years now. But marketers were still spreading their spending across media, including TV, print, OOH, cinema, radio, etc. Since all these mediums saw a drop, digital became a natural choice.” Traditional brands who offer tangible products will also embrace digital in the days to come. Giving us an insight into which categories will be the first adapters during <keyword id="9318169" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Unlock-1-0">unlock 1.0</keyword>, Jasani said, “There is a clear transfer of marketing monnies from mediums like outdoor, in-cinema to digital. Now, with this markets opening up, you should see much more activity from brands like mobile providers, who aren't termed as essentials but are important. Auto will see a boom because people will avoid public transport. But you will not go for a test-drive. This whole process will move to digital. Marketing will be around how safely it will be delivered it to you. So a lot of money will be spent on safety whether it is tourism, food, airlines, etc.” Google’s report titled ‘What is India searching for’ revealed how dependence on digital is rapidly increasing as time spent on smartphones in the first 3 week of COVID-19 disruption inched towards 4.5 hours per day and online video accounted for more than 70% of India’s total data usage. As a result, clients who have reached out to Gozoop lately are demanding digital-first strategy and Naqvi predicts that it will now get the lion’s share. “A lot of brands that are coming to us today and want a digital-first approach with some only wanting digital as the main channel. I feel that the future of brand building is digital. It’s not just here to stay but is here to lead. When it comes to the brands that have traditionally relied on mainline, there will be some tactical work that will be done occasionally, but that’s not to say that print and traditional will die. However, the portion of spends will flip. Digital spends will go up from 20-30% of the current total media spends to as high as 60-70% in the post COVID era,” shared Naqvi. The sudden transition to digital wasn’t really smooth for marketers. They were trying to figure out the market sentiment and how to communicate with consumers. Eventually, the importance of ROI was driven home. “The economic challenges of the current period do force brands to think sharper on ROI factors, where marketing spends are concerned. Hence digital as a highly measurable medium, becomes a first call. Even within digital, data-driven marketing and marketing automation, become a must-do, since these generate even sharper focus and enable far better ROI on spends,” said Mehta. There is a silver lining to this whole situation after all. Jasani predicts this consumer sentiment will pick up come Diwali. “This is going to be the best Diwali since the past 2 years. First two months will go in stocking essentials but come Diwali, consumers are going to step out and buy things. It will be a good thing for the country and economy, overall,” said he. Digital experts said that this shift to digital is an irreversible change in the marketing landscape.

Unlock 1.0: Digital will continue to take the bigger cut, share experts

At a press conference in New Delhi, <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> unveiled the first series of <keyword id="2373897" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Android-One">Android One</keyword> smartphones in India. Sundar Pichai, Senior Vice President for <keyword id="6355645" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="android">Android</keyword>, Chrome and Apps at Google was there as he was at the Google I/O developer event earlier this year, announcing the Android One initiative to bring a rich Android experience to affordable smartphones. 
 
Android One 
The vision of Android One is to bring stock Android with timely software updates to sub-$100 smartphones. Essentially, it’s Nexus for the masses. 
 
In an aberration from the usual course and like the Nexus and Google Play Edition products, Google will push the Android updates as and when they come instead of the OEMs. The devices will be automatically updated; the box of an Android` One device asserts ‘Always the latest version of Android’. 
 
The Android One devices will include support for seven additional languages including Hindi and users will not have to download any external application to access their Android One smartphones in Hindi. 
 
Devices 
The smartphone vendors that Google has partnered with for the first wave of devices in India are Micromax, Karbonn, and Spice; three OEMs who lead the market in the budget smartphone segment. 
 The three devices announced are <keyword id="6378177" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Spice">Spice</keyword> Dream UNO Mi-498, Micromax Canvas A1, and Karbonn Sparkle V. The Spice Dream UNO and Micromax Canvas A1 are available in black and white, while the Karbonn Sparkle V is available in blue, grey, red, and white colors. 
 
As was announced at the Google I/O event, these smartphones come with a 4.5-inch IPS display (480x854), dual SIM card slots, microSD card slot, and FM radio. Essentially, these three are same devices internally, which just differ in design and build. 
 Packing in a 1.3 GHz quad-core <keyword id="6369515" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mediatek">MediaTek</keyword> processor and 1 GB RAM, these devices include 4 GB of internal storage and a 1700mAh battery. The phones feature a 5-megapixel autofocus rear camera and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera. 
 
Pricing 
The only bullet point of the pitch that the Android One smartphones don’t keep up to is the promise of sub-$100 smartphones. In a competitive, and crowded, price segment, the devices are priced starting at ₹6399. It wasn’t a bad price at the start of this year, but now it will disappoint most. 
 There’s <keyword id="11148" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Motorola">Motorola</keyword>’s Moto E with stock Android and timely updates, which is sold at similar price-point with better hardware specifications. And the latest disruptor on the block, the Xiaomi Redmi 1S takes the crown with great specifications, although running an Android fork. 
 Google has tied up with <keyword id="15491" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Airtel">Airtel</keyword> for special data plans for Android One smartphones. Airtel customers get free access to Google services like operating system and software updates. Also, all customers get 200MB worth of apps per month for six months at no cost. 
 
Availability 
The Android One smartphones will be exclusively sold via online retails immediately, and interestingly Google has picked up three leading online retailers for three devices. Since the devices are pretty much the same, you could also make a decision based on your preference for a particular online store. 
 The Micromax Canvas A1 would be available on <keyword id="6354743" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Amazon-India">Amazon India</keyword>, the Spice Dream UNO will be available on Flipkart, and the Karbonn Sparkle V will be available on Snapdeal. Google has also announced that before the festive season of Diwali next month, the devices will also be available in brick and mortar stores. 
 
What’s Next 
Android One is a big bet for Google in India, and the region is clearly the ground zero for the initiative. Google plans to expand Android One to Indonesia, Philippines, and other South Asian countries by the end of 2014 and in more countries in 2015. In India, more devices will follow in coming months in price bands above and below the latest range. 
 At the event, Google also announced the next set of partners for the Android One initiative. These include <keyword id="104695" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Qualcomm">Qualcomm</keyword>, and OEMs like Acer, Alcatel Onetouch, HTC, Lenovo, <keyword id="6367990" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Panasonic">Panasonic</keyword>, XOLO, Lava, Intex, and Asus. Glaring omissions from the list are <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword> and <keyword id="6356116" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="LG">LG</keyword>.

What could be the better bargain period than this when India's three biggest online market places – <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Flipkart%2C+Snapdeal+">Flipkart, Amazon India and Snapdeal</a> - touted discounts of as much as 80% during this festive season? 
 Alas! The enthusiasm of early birds was dampened somewhat as there were few eye-popping deals on the first day on <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> or Amazon India on the latest gadgets and fashion brands. 
 
But brands were relieved that their efforts to rein in price cuts had worked, confirming the trend of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=e-Commerce+firms+">e-Commerce firms</a> moving away from extravagant discounts. 
 
Instead they are focussing on better financials. 
 According to industry executives, deep discounts were available on online only and e-Commerce-focused products such as those made by <keyword id="71696" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Micromax">Micromax</keyword>, Onida, BPL and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Motorola">Motorola</a>, and on older models of gadgets and smartphones. 
 
And a similar trend was witnessed in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=apparel+and+accessories">apparel and accessories</a>. This marked a sharp departure from last year, when the latest models of <keyword id="6354606" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="iPhone">iPhone</keyword>, <keyword id="173725" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Samsung-Galaxy">Samsung Galaxy</keyword> phones and Sony televisions were on sale. The e-Commerce firms offered maximum discounts on their in-house apparel brands where margins are twice that of other clothing. "None of our fresh merchandise is on discount except old or last-season stock," said J Suresh, chief executive of Arvind Lifestyle Brands, which sells brands such as Gap, US Polo, Wrangler and Calvin Klein. 
 Lets’ know how the big three – <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword>, Flipkart and Amazon India – planned to rob customers this year! 
 
1. Conservative Approach: These companies are more conservative this year, ordering about 1.2 times the normal stock for the discount period unlike last year when they were targeting to grow sales by five times. "The focus is surely on margins and profitability," Suresh said. 
 
The chief of a leading shoe brand said deep discounting of 60-80%, which is usually offered during end-of-season sales by the ecommerce firms, was missing on the first day. "The madness was not there and even I was expecting good deals on international brands for my personal purchase where discounts were hardly 4-10%," he said, requesting anonymity. The absence of deep discounts on the hottest items is good news for brick and mortar retailers, who have been suffering on account of lower prices online. 
 
2. The Big E-tailing Rivalry: After Flipkart announced the October13-17 campaign, Amazon and Snapdeal announced similar exercises—a point that a company executive brought up. "Random thought: Checked out TOI. Looks like we set the dates for when others do their festival sales :)! Go BBD!," Flipkart chief product officer Punit Soni tweeted. Rohit Bansal, cofounder of Snapdeal, tweeted: "Looks like India has chosen @snapdeal as the app of their choice this festive season!" 
 
Flipkart said it "saw 25 items sold per second." The company said 10 lakh products were sold in the first 10 hours with 6 million visits from across the country. "This is pushing the limits, the volumes are much higher than last year," said Naman Sarawagi, cofounder and CEO of FindYogi, a chat-based shopping assistance app. 
 
On Monday, Snapdeal said that it sold five mobile phones every second as it racked up total sales of $100 million. Amazon India claimed that the first day of the festive sales was the biggest day in its history, four times bigger than the peak of last Diwali. Traffic from mobile was over 70% and lakhs of new customers came from cities like Aurangabad, Malappuram, Dhanbad, Kannur, Tiruchirappalli, Jamshedpur and others. 
 3. Ambulance On Standby: Most visitors were from cities like <keyword id="6354321" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Bengaluru">Bengaluru</keyword>, Delhi and Chennai. Ludhiana, Lucknow and Bhopal were among the top cities from non-metros, said Flipkart, where employees have been working round the clock to keep systems stable. Flipkart set up shuttle services for employees to be picked up and dropped and even put an ambulance and masseurs on standby. 
 
"With over 20 million visits from across the country on the first day, the fashion sale has been a big hit amongst our customers. For electronics - it will be even bigger on 15th October as we have lined up a range of smartphone launches for our customers from brands like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Google">Google</a>, <keyword id="11148" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Motorola">Motorola</keyword>, <keyword id="6357456" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Huawei">Huawei</keyword>, Intex and Micromax. All these new launches will have aggressive launch and exchange offers along with exciting bank discounts," a Flipkart spokesperson said. 
 
About 1.5 million shoppers bought goods worth over $100 million from Flipkart during the sale in 2014 but the site stuttered as a large number of people sought to access the site. This year's Billion Days sale is expected to be five times in size, according to one Flipkart employee who requested anonymity. 
 Amazon and Flipkart started their festive season sales on Tuesday while Snapdeal kicked things off on Monday. Discounts were attractive on online-exclusive smartphone brands such as Motorola, <keyword id="874458" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Xiaomi">Xiaomi</keyword>, Yu Yuphoria and <keyword id="2210217" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="oneplus">OnePlus</keyword> 2. Price cuts were also offered on baby products, general merchandise, home decor and personal care products. The sale will carry on until the end of the week. 
 
Flipkart said there had been a surge in app downloads in anticipation of the sale. 
 
"It's great to see 1.6 million app installs in the last two days, which is a great indicator that India has been preparing well for The Big Billion Days," said Mukesh Bansal, head of commerce platform at Flipkart. The sale was off to a relatively glitch-free start. Flipkart, which was hit by glitches last year owing to heavy traffic, has staggered its app-only discounted sales over five days, across various categories such as fashion, home appliances, electronics and books.
