It also <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/goldman-sachs-new-logo-and-website-before-and-after-2024-7">unveiled a new logo</a> with a softer, rounder typeface and — in perhaps the biggest change — connected the G in Goldman with the S in Sachs.The redesign was subtle. Outside Wall Street, it barely registered. Inside the halls of Goldman Sachs, however, some people were perplexed.In 2020, Goldman made a show of disconnecting the G and S in its logo to modernize its look. Why, bank insiders were asking, had the firm just spent millions of dollars over several years to revert back to a logo it had ceremoniously ditched just four years earlier?<div type="image" title="Side-by-side images of Goldman's logo" height="1080" width="1920" msid="115309583" hostid="261" sizebytes="18594"></div>The rebranding effort has spotlighted the executive who spearheaded it: Fiona Carter, the chief marketing officer. Several high-ranking officials told Business Insider that they questioned the cost and efficacy of the bank's marketing efforts under Carter.BI spoke with 18 current and former Goldman employees, including some supporters, about Carter and her team's role at the bank. Some of these people were granted anonymity since they were not authorized to discuss company matters.Carter did not respond to a request for comment. What's more, they say, the division she has built is vital to growing the company's asset-management and private-wealth businesses, which have become an increasingly important source of revenue in light of the consumer-banking retreat.Goldman's assets under supervision have increased more than 50% since Carter joined the firm in 2020, rising from about $2 trillion to over $3 trillion at the end of the third quarter. And despite the consumer-banking setback, Goldman's stock is up more than 160% since Solomon took over in 2018, compared to a gain of 104% in the S&amp;P 500 index."It sounds like a few people have a quaint understanding of marketing at Goldman Sachs," a Goldman spokesman, Tony Fratto, said. "Our head count and spending are a small fraction of our peers. It's not remotely close. The culture of Goldman Sachs is to be lean, effective, and commercial, and marketing meets that test."Goldman never had a chief marketing officer before Carter. Talk to any longtime Goldman dealmaker, and nine out of 10 will speak with pride about how Goldman grew to be a powerhouse investment bank by virtue of its service to clients — not splashy sports sponsorships.In 2020, however, Solomon aspired to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/latest-goldman-sachs-news-2019-5">make Goldman a household name</a>. To do that, he and his deputy, the chief operating officer and president John Waldron, planned to upgrade Goldman's marketing game significantly.The men discussed building a marketing operation worthy of a tech giant like Google or Apple, multiple people familiar with their vision said. They turned to the consulting giant McKinsey, which recommended Goldman increase its marketing budget and hire a chief marketing officer, these people said.As AT&amp;T's chief brand officer, Carter handled sports sponsorships, advertising, and diversity messaging in a division headed by the telecom giant's global marketing officer, Lori Lee.With her refined British accent and commanding presence, Carter evoked a level of glamour that some said reflected Solomon's own leadership style, though he pulled back on his celebrity DJing in 2023 amid a backlash. She was praised in on-camera interviews and in the press for initiatives to advance women's equity in advertising. She was photographed at AT&amp;T-sponsored events with Hollywood stars like Robert De Niro and Katie Holmes.Carter joined the firm in September 2020 as a member of the bank's vaunted partnership. Her team was housed in Goldman's executive office, a group of public-facing units that support Goldman's C-suite, including media relations, investor relations, and marketing.In a break from tradition, she did not report to the head of that division, John Rogers. She reported instead to his boss, Waldron, the COO. The shake-up of the traditional hierarchy didn't sit well with Rogers, said executives who spoke to him about the new reporting line."He didn't like it," said a former executive in the department who worked with Rogers. "He lost something, and that had never happened in any significant way."Fratto said that Rogers "was the one who recommended that marketing report to John Waldron. This marketing team, which was housed in the executive office, focused on companywide initiatives like arranging social-media posts, managing the website, and Goldman's weekly podcast.Goldman also had marketers stationed within the firm's individual business lines who were responsible for division-specific products and services. Prior to Carter, these business-line marketers operated their own fiefs, reporting up to the heads of their units. One byproduct of this was a lack of cohesiveness in branding materials, including web pages for specific business lines that looked different from the rest of the website, a former senior marketing executive recalled. Carter set out to eliminate these issues and streamline Goldman's look and messaging.Carter hired aggressively, and Goldman's marketing operation soon swelled. People who worked in the executive office at that time said an oft-repeated mantra was that marketing was building an "army" — so much so that employees of the media-relations team had to be shifted to a different area of the 29th floor of Goldman's New York City office tower to make room."They're like: 'Our budget is never-ending. We just added another team. We added another 20 people in a night,'" one former executive-office staffer said. "It was crazy."One hire that riled some Goldman insiders was that of Maria dal Pan, a communications industry veteran who was tapped in part to write speeches and talking points for the CMO. Goldman insiders told BI it was unusual for executives other than the CEO to have such a staffer.Fratto told BI that "everyone who heads a function has that kind of support available to them," but the executives who spoke with BI said speechwriting was typically handled by subordinates on an ad hoc basis. Dal Pan, who left Goldman in 2023 after little more than a year, declined to comment.Carter erected new teams, including an internal ad-buying team. She ramped up the use of outside agencies to focus on branded content and website development and championed sports sponsorships such as the one it announced in 2022 with the carmaker McLaren's Formula 1 racing team.Carter used clichés that puzzled some colleagues, according to a former senior-level marketing executive. This person recalled Carter saying, for example, that marketing would be "the rocket fuel" that would vault the Goldman brand "to the stars."In meetings, she often name-dropped Waldron when discussing her game plan, two senior executives said. The goal, these people added, was to send the incontrovertible message that her vision had been blessed straight from the top.Goldman also came close to rolling out a dramatic logo and brand upgrade in 2022, according to two people familiar with the effort. "We all live with scarce resources, so I can't do all of that overnight. But if you were to ask me what my top three longer-term priorities are to help grow the business, this would be one of them."Waldron pointed to Goldman's sponsorship of McLaren's F1 racing team as an example of the CMO's vision benefiting the bank.Waldron told BI that he was initially skeptical of the sponsorship, which Carter spearheaded and which has led to the bank's logo being emblazoned on the team's vehicles at competitions. It has proved successful among clients, he said, because Carter structured it so they could get up close and personal with McLaren's technology versus sitting in the stands watching cars zoom around a track."What she's been able to put together with her team is something that's much more personal," he said.Waldron called her "one of the best marketing executives out there" and said the bank heard this sentiment from clients as well. "She has upgraded our capabilities monumentally," he added. "Our events and branding are materially better under her leadership. Goldman plans to replace him, a person familiar with the matter said.The bank's New York City office, meanwhile, recently lost roughly half a dozen members of its social-media team, multiple people said.There's been no shortage of internal speculation that the marketing team could be pared down further.Some people traced the chatter back to comments made by Russell Horwitz, Goldman's chief of staff and head of the executive office. In meetings, Horwitz has said the executive office operates better when head count is leaner, which some people took to refer to the marketing team because of its size.Horwitz told BI there was currently "no plan to reduce marketing" in the executive office. He added: "Generally speaking, we're in the right place." Horwitz said his comments about head count were not about any specific team.In the interview with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/sethmatlins/2024/04/15/the-2024-forbes-entrepreneurial-cmo-50/">Forbes</a> earlier this year, Carter said her job involved convincing an "often skeptical audience" of the merits of marketing. It has <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/top-wall-street-executives-rising-stars-investing-trading-2024#gidan-dan-35-citadel-securities-13">scaled up its operations in Asia Pacific</a> and launched rates trading in EMEA; it is now active in more than 50 markets across 150 venues. As it grew, it developed a vast patchwork of different technology solutions to meet its needs.But as Citadel Securities looks to continue to grow, it needs to position its technology to easily break into new markets, asset classes, and geographies. The firm is aiming to do that by re-architecting key systems in a standard, global way, Maurone said."Part of this is just evolving the technology and being able to take a step back with fresh eyes and say, 'Well, now that we've built out a lot of these offerings across all these different markets with so many different types of counterparties, we just have a much bigger set of requirements that we're looking at,'" Woods said. "And so how do we look at all those and try to find the patterns and the best way of operating?"Take the diversity in exchanges, which vary dramatically in terms of fee structures, operating hours, and clearing requirements. Instead of relying on individual systems that cater to individual exchanges, the firm is aiming to adapt its back-end systems to be flexible enough to accommodate many exchanges and onboard new ones efficiently.Asset types are another area where there's lots of underlying variance, especially in terms of data structures. And differences in trading practices — from systematic to high-touch — will require Citadel Securities to rethink those underlying systems.Through several progressive changes to its tech stack, Maurone said he hopes that in 2025, the firm will be entirely trading in a system that reflects its goal to reduce operational complexity and redundancies."A lot of times, it requires reorienting how we look at the problem. Before, you couldn't really see the pattern because you're only looking at one little slice of the problem, but now that you see it across all these different domains, it becomes clear that there's more we can do," Woods said.<h2 id="9a4344c0-c7a7-4dfd-9e99-50d4262adc9b">How product managers are bridging business and technology</h2>Wall Street firms have long turned to consulting agencies, like McKinsey or Deloitte, to shepherd tech execs and other C-suites through a transformative process such as this. Instead, Citadel Securities has turned to an internal group of product managers and COOs — some of whom spent years working at consulting firms — to oversee the vision and execution of its technology.Building out this internal muscle, Maurone said, has filled a need that an external consultant never really could. "We need to live and breathe and own the strategy," Maurone said, adding that much of the software is created in-house. If you look back at history, bull markets last more than five years on average, making this one at two years actually young," Detrick told Business Insider.Detrick said that while he sees more gains ahead, he doesn't expect another big year for returns like in 2023 and so far in 2024, with the S&amp;P 500 delivering gains of 24% and 22%, respectively.Instead, Detrick said that the average gain of a bull market in year three is about 8%, which is right around the average annual return for stocks."All in all, we expect stocks to be up at least low double digits over the next year," Detrick said.<h2 id="71148928-7cd9-413b-8146-f7a06f2d41cb">Baird, Ross Mayfield</h2>Baird investment strategist Ross Mayfield said the third year of this current bull rally could deliver stronger returns than history suggests because the first two years of the bull delivered underwhelming performance relative to history."The first two years of this bull market have been somewhat muted vs. historical standards, so there is ample opportunity for outperformance of the typical year 3 performance," Mayfield told Business Insider.Mayfield also echoed Detrick's sentiment that the average bull market is over five years long, so he thinks "there is plenty of room to run.""It would not be surprising if year three of the bull market outperformed the typical year three given the rates backdrop, expected earnings growth, and tepid investor sentiment," Mayfield said.<h2 id="d92eafcb-b184-4d6f-927a-142734817da9">US Bank Asset Management, Rob Haworth</h2>Investment strategist Rob Haworth of US Bank Asset Management believes the S&amp;P 500 could surge to 6,480 in its third year of the bull market, representing potential upside of 12%.Haworth's bullish view is backed by what really drives stock prices higher: earnings growth."The key forward metric for market returns remains the pace of earnings growth," Haworth told Business Insider. "As we look ahead, we still see a constructive path."Haworth expects the S&amp;P 500 to deliver $270 in earnings per share next year, representing about 13% growth from 2024 consensus levels."Lower interest rates from the Federal Reserve and soft or no-landing economic scenarios are helping lift growth into next year, supporting further equity market gains," Haworth said.

These include a multicultural marketing company, an event-production company, and a private global membership community called <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="c-link c-link--underline" href="https://www.hq-dc.com/">HQ House</a>. It has locations in Washington, DC, and soon, Nairobi, Kenya. It also has virtual memberships. HQ House aims to connect 1 million Black professionals globally by 2026. The following has been edited for brevity and clarity.Tim Paradis: What made you start these businesses?Mike Burns: Both John and I were in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/entrepreneurs-small-business-owners-share-challenges-of-starting-company-2023-10">corporate America</a>. John was a partner at a law firm. I was a corporate executive at a Fortune 500 company. We were in these roles during the time of COVID, but also the time of social unrest. One of my roles was overseeing global real estate for the organization that I was a part of. We all know that during the time of COVID, the way you had to cut costs was either through cutting people or <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ceos-are-ready-to-cut-back-office-portfolio-post-pandemic-2020-5">cutting your footprint</a>, because <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/in-2020-big-businesses-got-bigger-small-businesses-died-2020-12">revenues usually weren't coming in</a> for most companies.I'll never forget, I was having a call with the CEO and the CFO, and we were talking about <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-real-estate-property-homeowners-downsize-lucky-prices-zillow-economist-2023-9">real-estate downsizing</a>. And at the same time, on the TV behind me was the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/george-floyd-family-describes-heartbreak-over-his-death-2020-5">George Floyd</a> video. And on my computer were the pictures of my two little Black boys. At that moment, I started thinking: Was the conversation I was having about <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/worlds-biggest-companies-downsize-office-space-for-hybrid-working-2023-6">global real-estate downsizing</a> going to ensure that the situation on that TV was never going to happen for my two little boys? And then, right at that moment, I hung up the phone. I called John, and I said, "Do you want to go out and change the world?" We dropped our notice two weeks later, in the middle of COVID, to start the Burns Brothers.Paradis: Changing the world is an ambitious goal. How did you know how to approach it?Mike: What I've found inside corporate America, especially in diversity roles but also in business-leader roles, is that oftentimes we want to act without understanding. So we knew that if we were really going to change the world, it was going to have to be centered around the concept of how to create and maximize understanding.First, understanding yourself as an individual, and if you understand yourself as an individual, you can <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/active-listening">better understand others</a>. We knew it was going to be a heavy lift. But we knew whatever we were going to do, it was going to have to be founded on driving, driving, driving, and creating understanding.And now, if you look at the Burns Brothers as an organization, you can see how we built through leveraging or building on those pillars of understanding.Paradis: How does what you're doing fit into the broader conversation around DEI?Mike: We look at diversity, equity, and inclusion very, very differently. A lot of times elsewhere, it will be solely based on external dimensions of diversity. Like, "What are you doing for women? What are you doing for people of color? What are you doing for people of the LGBTQ+ population?" That's all well and good, but what it allows to happen is for people to opt out. Like, "If I'm not part of that group, then it's really not something that I can relate with or connect with."Also, it actually sometimes is counterproductive, because when you start looking at things through segmentation, you're actually enhancing the concept of differences and separation. But we all know that as human beings, we actually have way more in common.Experiences may be different, but <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boss-manager-positive-feedback-employee-appreciation-work-quit-job-2023-3">everyone wants to feel valued</a>. Everyone wants to actually make a difference and an impact. That comes in different shapes and forms. And so what we look at for diversity, equity, and inclusion is to really help people understand the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/remote-team-building-activities-2019-3">points of commonality</a>.Then once you understand the points of commonality, how then do you even enhance those through the differences that people bring? So instead of solely focusing on differences and, "How do I engage with the differences?" it's more, "How do I maximize the commonality to create organizational effectiveness or outcomes or <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/office-friendship-dead-remote-work-employers-turnover-great-resignation-2022-4">maximize team culture and camaraderie</a>?"I think that's what makes us different. And that's what also makes our work digestible for organizations or people who may be pushing back or who may not feel like this is part of what they should care about or what they should be focused on. And it's been a successful approach.Paradis: It sounds like this conversation around DEI is maybe too binary sometimes.Mike: Right. And it can come across as divisive. Because DEI, unfortunately, has been positioned as, "If you do not support this, then you are a bad person." We never do anything around privilege or anti-racism and things like that. Because — and we're not saying they're bad or good — it ends up immediately putting certain people in a certain mindset.And if change is truly a volume-based game and you need as many people rowing the boat in the same direction, you can't afford to alienate people at the start. You have to make them feel like they're "part of" versus they are "outsiders of."Paradis: You have businesses around marketing, communications, events, talent management, inclusive learning, and wellness. What about these businesses has a high return on investment when it comes to making progress in this area?John Burns: I think there are a couple of different things. The ROI is high when you bring these different, very important functions together because they're all very complementary. I think you can never effectively make change if you're only trying to communicate with someone from a digital-marketing campaign. You can only make a limited amount of change if you're only bringing people together for events.But I think if you bring all of these functions together in a seamless way, that's when you really begin to see the change, the impact, the sustainable messaging, and all those things. I mean, we all know people have different experiences and different messaging and different types of insights ultimately inform their <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiktokers-say-being-delulu-delusional-is-key-to-work-success-2023-7">belief system</a>. And so we believe in being very comprehensive with our approach.Paradis: How do you know what you're doing is working?John: Obviously, from a marketing and comms perspective, you have KPIs and different metrics that you're tracking. Those are all easy, but I think it's the sentiment and feedback and the personal stories of impact that ultimately, really, are the drivers for us.Specifically, when we think about our <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/private-members-clubs-reimagined-by-virus-soho-house-zero-bond-2020-9">membership club</a> in Washington, the level of relationships that have been forged as a result of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/psychological-safety-remote-work-how-to-foster-2021-5">people being in a space of safety is immeasurable</a>. The level of refuge that we've been able to create for people to get out of the complexities of having to be performative throughout the day, to come to a space where they can just be themselves — it's something we never believed was even possible. It's so refreshing to see how it's really changing people's lives and circumstances on a daily basis.Mike: A different example is when you go into a construction site with a whole bunch of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/highest-paying-blue-collar-jobs-in-america">blue-collar workers</a> in Alabama, and you're about to help them understand themselves and the biases they carry.You already have your own biases — believing what they're going to believe. But it's refreshing when you have that 60-year-old white construction worker — a man — come to you after and say, "You know what, I've never even thought about diversity like this. I never even saw this in myself." And then they send you an email two weeks after and ask you questions about how they should engage.To me, that's how you know that you've made an impact. So if you take John's statement and then you take my statement, over time, if you continue to do this, the type of change and impact you can make in the world is probably unimaginable. But the thing is, we have to understand it's a long-term game.
