During the round table conversation "The Mandalorian" creator Jon Favreau has with some of the major figures who helped make the "Star Wars" franchise a global sensation over the decades, including Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, Industrial Light &amp; Magic CCO John Knoll, and "The Mandalorian" executive producer/director Dave Filoni, Filoni throws out a fascinating question to Knoll:</p><p>That's right. "Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace," the movie that most of us are convinced is nothing but heavy-handed CGI wizardry, has the most miniatures in it than any other movie in the franchise.</p><p>A big example of that is the pod racing scene. Industrial Light &amp; Magic effects veteran Lorne Peterson noted in a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toFOhKVouCg&amp;feature=emb_titleitle">deleted scene</a> for the 2011 documentary "Sense of Scale" that more money was spent on miniatures for "Star Wars: Episode 3 - Revenge of the Sith" than for any "Star Wars" movie to that point.</p><p>Before computer-generated imagery became the norm in Hollywood, miniatures were an essential visual effects tool in moviemaking. Mostly it's become a joke in pop culture because of how bad it was used in sci-fi <keyword id="406" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Movies">movies</keyword> of the 1950s and the "Godzilla" movies made for decades in Japan.</p><p>But the reveal that a lot of what dazzled us in "Phantom Menace" and the prequels were miniatures proves how essential of an art it still is.</p><p>Miniatures are still used in big movies. A major part of the series is watching creator Jon Favreau have round table discussions with key members of the show.</p><p>In the first episode (titled "Directing"), we get a deep dive into the five directors who did the first season — Dave Filoni, Rick Famuyiwa, Deborah Chow, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Taika Waititi. "Disney Gallery" has a treasure trove of great footage from the set that shows off how the season was made, from the size of the sets to the incredible costume and production design. And, of course, lots of Baby Yoda footage.</p><p>I honestly wish the show was more of the footage from the set than people talking around a table. Each person gets their time to talk about their career and how their individual styles contributed to their episodes.</p><p>Major highlights include Bryce Dallas Howard talking about taking a trip to Japan with her father, director Ron Howard, as a kid and vaguely remembering being half awake while they had dinner with George Lucas and Japanese directing legend Akira Kurosawa. And then there's Dave Filoni recounting how he was hired by George Lucas to do "The Clone Wars" cartoon series. In a funny story, he talked about how he was convinced that a prank was being played on him when Lucas' people called for an interview.</p><p>In the "Legacy" episode there are also some "wow" moments in the conversations. Kathleen Kennedy said that when she started at Lucasfilm, the company had 126 patents on new tech they had created. And Filoni, who also sits in on the interviews with Favreau (they are both executive producers on "The Mandalorian"), throws out an interesting piece of trivia: the most practical miniatures ever used for any "Star Wars" movie was "The Phantom Menace" (which surprised me as I assumed it was all CGI).</p><p>If you are into that kind of geek stuff, then this show is for you.</p><h2><div type="image" title="disney gallery the mandalorian" height="1280" width="1920" msid="75630083" hostid="261"></div></h2><h2>The most surprising thing about it: The show used large screens on the sets that double as the background</h2><p>I'm sure this series is going to delve deeper into the technology of the show in future episodes, but the behind-the-scenes footage showing how large curved screens displayed the background of the scenes the actors were in was wild to look at. I would not be shocked if that becomes the new norm of CGI-heavy sets. Instead of actors working in bland green colored studios, with the big screens they now have a little more aesthetic to feed off of.</p><p>It's things like this and seeing the tricks of the trade that are going to make me come back and watch more episodes of "Disney Gallery." </p><h2>The show's weakness: There are times it feels like you're watching a promotional video</h2><p>Most likely because it's Disney produced, the episodes have a real DVD extra feel to them. What I mean by that is sometimes people speak like they are going through talking points: how amazing the experience is, how everyone is incredible to work with, how George Lucas is the master of all.</p><p>So don't be surprised if you do a couple of eye-rolls each episode by the things that are said.</p><h2><div type="image" title="mandalorian babyyoda puppeteer" height="522" width="1067" msid="75630085" hostid="261"></div></h2><h2>The bottom line: The show is a fun watch</h2><p>Two episodes in, "Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian" is worth the watch, especially if you loved watching season one of "The Mandalorian." Disney gives fascinating insight into the making of 'The Mandolorian' in a new docuseries, though it at times feels like a gigantic promo

It is the one that gives R2-D2 and C-3PO their jobs after they arrive in Jabba the Hut's palace in the beginning of the movie.</p><p>In "The Mandalorian," EV-9D9 makes a cameo as the bartender of the Mos Eisley cantina in the episode, "Chapter 5: The Gunslinger." Yes, the same cantina that Skywalker and Ben Kenobi visit in "Star Wars: A New Hope" that memorably does not serve droids (things have clearly changed in that part of the galaxy).</p><p><div type="image" title="Hamill voice" height="504" width="1008" msid="76515104" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Then, over the weekend Hamill took to Twitter and revealed more.</p><p>"I am vocally represented in ALL SW films except the Prequels," he said in a tweet. That means the more recent trilogy in addition to the stand alones like "Rogue One" and "Solo." He noted in the tweet that he goes by the name "Patrick Williams," a pseudonym that he's said in the past is based on his brothers' names.</p><p>"If I did have billing, in the past as a pseudonym I've used a combination of my brothers' names, and I call myself Patrick Williams," the actor said in a 2017 interview with <a href="https://www.cinemablend.com/news/2393012/why-mark-hamill-got-to-play-with-a-giant-bb-8-in-the-making-of-star-wars-the-last-jedi">Cinemablend</a>.</p><p>Looking up <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm11213092/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0">that name on IMDb</a> he is listed with only one credit: Boolio in "The Rise of Skywalker."</p><p>Boolio was the informant who gave the Resistance the intel that Palpatine is still alive in the beginning of the movie (he's later decapitated because of his treason). <a href="https://www.insider.com/mark-hamill-had-a-second-role-in-rise-of-skywalker-2020-3">Hamill's role was so secret even the man designing the character didn't know about the cameo</a>, Insider reporter Abby Monteil learned.</p><p><div type="image" title="boolio the rise of skywalker lucasfilm" height="536" width="1072" msid="76515106" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Don't be surprised if you see more credits begin to pop up on the Patrick Williams page now that this is out.</p><p>Hamill has a long history of doing voice work. While the actors would interact in a scene with practical pieces of the set in the foreground, behind them was a giant screen showing the backdrop the scene was taking place in, which could range from a desert locale, the outskirts of an outpost, or deep space.</p><p>Fans of the show are only now seeing how that was done on the show by the behind-the-scenes footage in the new Disney Plus show "Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian."</p><p>The innovation is just the latest from Industrial Light &amp; Magic and was able to let Favreau and his team not just give their actors a more immersive environment to act in, but saved loads of time (and money) in post-production as less CGI had to be added in the shot.</p><p><div type="image" title="The Mandalorian Disney Plus" height="1284" width="1878" msid="75742577" hostid="261"></div></p><p>But with the coronavirus pandemic having halted almost all of production in Hollywood, the video wall now isn't just a money-saving innovation but a lifeline for <keyword id="406" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Movies">movies</keyword> to continue production.</p><p>"It's going to be the wave of the future, no question about it," VFX supervisor Rob Legato ("The Lion King," "Jungle Book") <a href="https://www.indiewire.com/2020/05/the-mandalorian-real-time-virtual-production-saving-hollywood-lockdown-vfx-1202230120/">told Indiewire</a>. "And people are really interested in it now [during the lockdown]. It's hastening acceptance because of the ability to do it and be socially distant still."</p><p>When production on movies begin to ramp up, one of the biggest challenges will be pulling off shooting days with only an essential number of crew members (as states will have orders for how many people can gather together at one time). "Rogue One" is excellent, and there are some great moments in Disney's sequel trilogy, too. But <keyword id="16674" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="George-Lucas">George Lucas</keyword> <em>is</em> "Star Wars," and so too, therefore, is "The Phantom Menace - far more than Disney's polished trilogy.</p><p>The movie is also crucial to the wider context of the "Star Wars" universe, and set things up that are now treasured by the "Star Wars" fandom, including a certain red-headed Sith wielding a double-bladed lightsaber.</p><div type="image" title="The Phantom Menace Jar Jar Binks" height="1200" width="1600" msid="80723509" hostid="261"></div><h2>'The Phantom Menace' has flaws, but none as deep as the sequel trilogy's</h2><p>It's no secret that "The Phantom Menace" could probably use a good edit. It has pacing issues, and the stilted dialogue the prequel movies are often criticized for is almost part of the fabric of "Star Wars" by this point. And yes, Jar Jar Binks is kind of annoying, but not nearly as much as is now widely accepted.</p><p>These are surface-level flaws, creases in an otherwise confident and assured start of a definitive new era of "Star Wars" with believable characters and clear plots.</p><p>The three latest Disney movies, meanwhile, feel like a jumbled mess with no cohesion. It's obvious that the planning was poor, hence Rian Johnson's "The Last Jedi" abandoning all that came in JJ Abrams' "The Force Awakens." Then, when <a href="https://www.vox.com/culture/2017/12/18/16791844/star-wars-last-jedi-backlash-controversy">fans voiced their displeasure</a> with Johnson's movie, Abrams was brought back on board for the grand finale of the Skywalker saga, "The Rise of Skywalker," which essentially felt like two hours of retconning and jamming in plots and characters that were jarring and confusing.</p><p>The flaws in Disney's movies are not just creases, they were deep-rooted issues that undermined "Star Wars" as a whole. From Palpatine's return to Finn's non-existent character arc to Rey's heritage and her sudden force healing ability, plus the series' betrayal of Luke Skywalker ... nothing felt cohesive, unlike the thoughtful, coherent and deliberate expansion of the universe that "The Phantom Menace" achieved.</p><div type="image" title="Star Wars Rise of Skywalker" height="1200" width="1600" msid="80723512" hostid="261"></div><h2>'Star Wars' is at its best when it's new and bold, just like 'The Phantom Menace'</h2><p>"Star Wars" is at it's best when it's offering innovative, bold new stories, as it did with its first-ever installment, "A New Hope" and its sequel "The Empire Strikes Back."</p><p>In an interview with Charlie Rose in 2015, shortly after "The Force Awakens" came out, Lucas said of his previous six "Star Wars" movies: "I worked very hard to make them completely different, with different planets, with different spaceships - you know, to make it new."</p><p>I walked away from "The Force Awakens" feeling like I'd seen a box-checking tour: Alien bars - tick! A sinister army - tick! A band of rebels - tick! A cute droid - tick! Rather than an innovative experience. As <a href="https://www.inverse.com/article/59505-star-wars-sequels-george-lucas">Lucas said himself of the movie</a>: "there's nothing new."</p><p>This is why "The Mandalorian" works so well. Yes, it brings back old characters, but we also get to see things in the "Star Wars" universe that we haven't seen before, and it expands upon the lore and legend in a completely different era of "Star Wars." We come away from "The Mandalorian" more enriched by "Star Wars," but I never felt that way after one of Disney's sequels, or "Solo." "Rogue One," thankfully, did achieve originality, but not to the degree of the "The Phantom Menace."</p><div type="image" title="The Phantom Menace Obi Wan" height="1200" width="1600" msid="80723513" hostid="261"></div><h2>'The Phantom Menace' is vital to the wider franchise and added to the lore of 'Star Wars'</h2><p>Not only did we get to see a young Obi-Wan Kenobi in action, shading in the life of someone we previously only knew as a wise old man, but we also saw the early beginnings of the boy who would be Vader.</p><p>Plus, we learnt more about the mythical Jedi, and got to see them at the height of their powers in a never-before-seen era before their fall. We learnt about the Sith's rule of two and how a sprawling galaxy was ruled before the Empire took over, not to mention the numeral new planets, species, characters, and civilizations we've come to know and be fascinated with introduced by "The Phantom Menace."</p><div type="image" title="The Phantom Menace Darth Maul" height="1200" width="1600" msid="80723515" hostid="261"></div><p>We also have "The Phantom Menace" to thank for Darth Maul, one of the coolest villains in movie history who immediately became a fan favorite. Animated series "The Clone Wars" and "Rebels" have since expanded upon him to make him one of the saga's most complex and beloved characters - we have Lucas and "The Phantom Menace" to thank for the creation of the spike-headed Sith lord.</p><p>Meanwhile, Qui Gon Jinn, played with perfect serenity, spirituality, and facial hair by Liam Neeson, is one of the most underrated characters in "Star Wars." He is the quintessential Jedi, his longing for peace and calm is exemplified when he kneels and meditates in a pause in battle with Maul in the Duel of the Fates.</p><p>Qui Gon's  impact is felt across the rest of the "Star Wars" movies - Kanan Jarrus in "Rebels" has more than a hint of Qui Gon about him. And Qui Gon, let's not forget, is the one who found the boy who would become Darth Vader. </p><h2>Disney's sequel trilogy are meringue movies - they look good but there's no substance</h2><p>The Duel of the Fates battle between Obi-Wan and Qui Gon and Maul features two Jedi knights at their peak fighting a Sith lord, and the dazzling style of lightsaber combat is riveting to watch.</p><p>But in "Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian," Dave Filoni, co-creator of "Rebels" and producer and director of "The Clone Wars" and "The Mandalorian," explains why this fight is so much more than a flashy spectacle.</p><p>Filoni said: "He's fighting for Anakin. That's why it's called the Duel Of The Fates, the fate of this child and depending on how this fight goes, Anakin's life will be dramatically different ... it's everything that the entire three prequel films hangs on."</p><p>Qui Gon's death gives the movie weight. Conversely, consequences feel light in Disney's movies. It's a tired criticism by now but Rey, who has never held a lightsaber before, manages to beat fully-trained Sith lord Kylo Ren in a duel. This betrays the nature of "Star Wars," where skill in combat has always been crucial. The new trilogy doesn't follow the universe's rules that Lucas' movies lovingly follow to create a believable, immersive, and meaningful story.</p><p>This is why "The Phantom Menace" is so underrated. It's taken for its surface-level flaws when it has so much more to offer.</p><p>Disney's sequel trilogy are meringue movies. They are well made and look good, and are certainly more polished than the prequel series, but they are ultimately lightweight and empty.</p><p>But "The Phantom Menace" is one of the most important and thoughtful slices of "Star Wars" we've ever been given, and not even Jar Jar Binks can stand in the way of that.</p>

The movie hit theaters in late December.</p><p>Disney had <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/features/bob-iger-bets-company-hollywood-s-future-streaming-1247663?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twittertter">originally intended a seven-month window</a> between theaters and streaming, but the coronavirus pandemic shifted those plans. Disney also released "Frozen II" to Disney Plus early, as well as the new Pixar movie "Onward," which had a short theatrical run last month before most theaters in the US closed because of the coronavirus. </p><p>Disney is also releasing "Artemis Fowl" straight to Disney Plus. The movie was originally scheduled to hit theaters in May. Boxoffice Pro chief analyst Shawn Robbins told Business Insider that it was a lower risk for Disney to skip theaters in "Artemis Fowl's" case. </p><p>"Eventually, the theatrical calendar will fill up and even in normal times, there were going to be some movies that didn't pan out to be big hits," Robbins said. "'Artemis Fowl' is one of them."</p><p>But Disney still seems committed to the theatrical experience and has already scheduled new release dates for most of its upcoming major releases such as "Mulan" and "Black Widow."
