New Delhi, Apr 14 () State-owned NLC India has discontinued the use of eight disinfection tunnels installed as a safety measure for its employees against Covid-19 following concerns raised about its effectiveness and the harm it may cause to human health, an official said. "The PSU was operating eight disinfection tunnels at its power plants, townships and hospital. But three days ago the company stopped using it on the directions issued by the state government of Tamil Nadu," a company source told . The company, which was in the process of setting up two more such disinfection tunnels, will not do so now due the concerns raised by the government, he added. The Director of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Chennai, recently instructed all government departments in Tamil Nadu not to install such tunnels. It said that "disinfection tunnels will create a false sense of security and people may be diverted from handwash to disinfection tunnels. In addition, the spraying of alcohol/chlorine/lysol on human beings is not only harmful but also ineffective." "....it is instructed that disinfection tunnels should not be installed and used," it said. A company official had earlier said that "NLC Thermal team has fabricated disinfecting tunnels by using packing material and spares available with power plants which are now being used by all the power plants and mines in Neyveli." The company had earlier said disinfecting tunnels were set up to ensure protection of all employees before they entered the plants and mines. The PSU has also set up a 'fever clinic' for those with symptoms like fever, cough and breathing difficulties. Besides, NLC India has taken up measures for in-house preparation of liquid soap solution and sanitisers at its research centre. Do not open the bottle. Do not throw away or dispose of the bottle in the regular trash.</li><li>Double bag the bottle in clean, clear zip-top bags and place in a small cardboard box. Return the bagged and boxed product to a Walmart store.</li><li>Wash sheets or linens that the product may have been sprayed on using normal laundry detergent and dry completely in a hot dryer; bleach can be used if desired.</li><li>Wipe down counters and surfaces that might have the spray on them with undiluted Pine-Sol or similar disinfectant.</li><li>Limit how much you handle the spray bottle and wash hands thoroughly after touching the bottle or linens. If you used gloves, wash hands afterward.</li></ul>If you have used the product within the past 21 days and have fever or other melioidosis symptoms, the CDC recommends you seek medical care. At least 1 person died after inhaling an aromatherapy room spray from Walmart that contained a rare, deadly bacteria

New Delhi, Apr 1 () The All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) on Wednesday condemned the use of disinfectant spray on migrant workers in Bareilly who were returning home amid the coronavirus lockdown. It added that migrant workers should not be dehumanised or criminalised. "AITUC strongly condemns the use of disinfectant spray on the migrant workers in Bareilly who were desperate to reach home and walking for miles on the highways," AITUC General Secretary Amarjeet Kaur said in a statement. "It is criminal to use chemical spray on human bodies as it can cause nausea, vomiting, head ache, irritation and damage to eyes...and could be fatal in case of children and those with ailment of asthma, diabetes etc," she added. AITUC also noted that in Bulandshahar, a police personnel was seen writing "I am a lockdown breaker" on the forehead of a worker. "Could anybody witness such a scene with an affluent, some of them in high positions violating advisories on lockdown even though having a history of travelling in Corona effected countries in the months of February- March 2020," Kaur added. Further, some workers in Surat were not only lathicharged, but cases have also been filed against them, it said. There are no efforts by the authorities to reach out to the places where these workers are held up in various states after losing their livelihood and having no resources to feed themselves, the union added. No efforts are being made to explain to them the need of the lockdown while also ensuring their basic essentials of food water and medical care, it said. "It is shameful that some of those in power including some responsible government officials having scant regard to the basic human rights of crores of vulnerable, helpless poor workers who are desperate having lost their livelihood, place of stay and compelled due to circumstances to walk for miles to reach back homes in villages," she added. The AITUC demanded the intervention of the Ministry of Labour to protect the workers. "We also demand from the central government to come out with special financial help to the state governments in fulfilling their obligations towards these migrant workers as well as the others poor working masses in the states who have suddenly lost their livelihood due to lockdown," it added. Amazon's ongoing Great Indian Festival has already broken last year's records

New Delhi, Apr 3 () Agrochemical firm UPL Limited on Friday pledged to contribute Rs 75 crore to PM-CARES fund in assisting the government to fight against the coronavirus pandemic which has claimed the lives of over 50 people and infected more than 2,300 others.The Mumbai-based agricultural solutions company has also kept on standby the premises of its educational institutions such as Gyan Dham School and Sandra Shroff Rofel College of Nursing, both at Vapi in Gujarat, with necessary arrangements to operate as quarantine centres as and when required, it said.It is also continuously providing large numbers of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to frontline healthcare and sanitisation workers who are fighting the battle against the novel coronavirus, the company said in a statement.Jai Shroff, the CEO of UPL Limited, said: "These are very challenging times for the entire mankind, and we find ourselves duty-bound to serve the nation and assist with our resources and expertise in this critical fight. As a responsible corporate, we remain committed to support the government of India and various state governments in every possible manner."The company said that it is additionally supplementing the Central and state governments' efforts by engaging 200 modern mechanical spraying machines (falcons) and 225 staff members to contain the spread of coronavirus.The company teams are assisting local administrations by providing services of disinfectant spraying at various public and private spaces such as hospitals, streets, police stations, railway stations, municipal corporations among others.Tushar Trivedi, Head, AFS, UPL said: "We recognise that keeping public spaces disinfected is one of the most important aspects in checking the spread of coronavirus. Upon call from the authorities, we quickly aligned our resources and deputed our mechanised spraying vehicles to disinfect public spaces with Sodium Hypochloride provided by the government".The company has so far sprayed 11.5 lakh litre of disinfectant solution Gujarat, Maharashtra, Telangana, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh, and is working to extend the exercise to other states as identified by the government.UPL has also mobilised its operational capabilities to manufacture hand sanitisers produced as per the WHO guidelines for distribution to police and municipal corporations.The Union Health Ministry said on Friday that there have been 2,301 cases of COVID-19 in India and 56 deaths, out of which 12 were reported since Thursday.
