But front desks often have much more to offer.</p><p>My hotel had things I never thought to ask for, like makeup wipes and hairbrushes.</p><p>Now, when I stay at hotels, I check with the clerks before going out and purchasing toiletries I forgot to pack.</p><h2>Our lost and found was a gold mine</h2><p>Guests would frequently leave belongings behind, and it was surprising how seldom they'd come back for them.</p><p>My hotel kept lost-and-found items for 90 days before they were fair game for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/things-guests-should-stop-doing-at-hotels-former-employee">the staff</a> to claim.</p><p>Occasionally, I'd find something worth taking, like a hair straightener that I still use to this day.</p><div type="image" title="hotel guest speaking to an employee behind the front desk" height="3240" width="4320" msid="105736040" hostid="261" sizebytes="407044"></div><h2>The employee perks and discounts were great</h2><p>I worked for a pretty <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/great-wolf-lodge-worth-it-for-adults-review-photos-2023-9">large hotel chain</a>, so I got a hefty discount at all of its locations. I once paid only $35 a night for a room.</p><p>My hotel also has a membership program, so our staff would receive points for signing guests up. By redeeming them, I could get <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/how-i-live-on-cruise-ship-free-with-husband-2023-11">free stays</a> at hotels and gift cards to popular retail chains.</p><h2>Guests rarely checked out of their rooms</h2><p>The checkout process lets hotel staff know when a room is vacant so they can start cleaning and reoccupying it. Unfortunately, many guests skipped this step.</p><p>Some days, I'd have to run around the hotel and inspect 50 or more rooms, which made my job harder.</p><p>Checking out doesn't have to be difficult — shouting at the front desk on the way out that the room is empty can sometimes be sufficient.</p><h2>I often learned a lot from our guests</h2><div type="image" title="Guests at the front desk of a hotel." height="900" width="1200" msid="105736041" hostid="261" sizebytes="49394"></div><p>Some of our guests came into town for business reasons, which often meant they were working on interesting projects.</p><p>I got the inside scoop on cool professions and local events from our guests, like the city's upcoming construction projects from contractors.</p><p>International guests were also fun to host in our small Canadian town. The diversity made for interesting and educational conversations, which taught me so much about <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/surprising-things-about-living-in-50-countries-photos-2022-1">different cultures</a>.</p><p>I also enjoy learning new languages, and having guests from around the world often helped me practice them.</p><h2>My job was pretty easy and not very stressful</h2><p>My hotel was small and usually pretty quiet.</p><p>When I wasn't helping a guest or doing other tasks, I could read, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/best-and-worst-netflix-shows-of-year-2023-10">watch TV shows</a>, or do schoolwork.</p><p>Overall, it was a surprisingly low-stress job. I'd highly recommend working the front desk of a hotel to anyone who enjoys customer service.</p>

On Thursday, GoodRx announced that it had acquired a telemedicine startup, and will start offering online doctor visists for about $20.</p><p>The new service complements GoodRx's main offering, which helps consumers shop around for lower prices on their prescription meds. GoodRx CEO Doug Hirsch declined to disclose the size of the deal. HeyDoctor, the startup GoodRx acquired, was valued at about $1.7 million as of mid-2018, according to <a href="https://pitchbook.com">PitchBook</a>.</p><p>"We just thought we need to fill that gap," Hirsch said. "If you want to make it affordable, you have to take more control of the process."</p><p>The deal is the latest signal that digital doctor consults are taking on a larger role in US healthcare, as patients shop for care the same way they would mattresses or televisions. Prescription drug discount company <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/blink-health-takes-hassle-out-getting-birth-control-pills-chaiken/">Blink Health</a> recently <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/blink-health-takes-hassle-out-getting-birth-control-pills-chaiken/">started offering telemedicine visits,</a> and virtual care has also been an integral part of new healthcare businesses promising to diagnose and treat erectile dysfunction or <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/keeps-direct-to-consumer-approach-to-hair-loss-racked-up-75-million-in-funding-2018-8">hair loss</a>, provide <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-get-birth-control-online-app-nurx-2016-7">birth control</a>, or straighten your teeth - all without leaving your home. </p><h2>Telemedicine is taking off, from health insurers to Amazon</h2><p>To start, GoodRx will offer online visits for 18 conditions, including birth control, smoking cessation, urinary tract infections, and erectile dysfunction. Patients connect with doctors either through secure chat or on the phone, rather than live video, which some other telemedicine platforms use. </p><p>Telemedicine today is taking off, with major health insurers rolling out their own services, too. Earlier this week, Amazon signaled a major interest in virtual healthcare, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-launches-virtual-care-pilot-program-for-employees-in-seattle-2019-9">launching a pilot telemedicine service</a> for its workers in Seattle. According to the <a href="http://files.kff.org/attachment/Report-Employer-Health-Benefits-Annual-Survey-2019">Kaiser Family Foundation</a>, 82% of companies that have more than 200 employees covered telemedicine in 2019, up from the 39% of companies that size that covered the service in 2016. </p><p>Hirsch said it's likely a large share of healthcare will one day happen remotely.</p><p>"And again, I see us as sort of right smack in the middle there," he told Business Insider. "Having used it myself, it's one of those 'Aha' moments, 'Why didn't this exist before?'"</p><p>This <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/goodrx-displays-mail-order-options-for-direct-to-consumer-health-startups-2019-3">isn't the first time GoodRx</a> has experimented with helping customers get access to doctors who can prescribe medications. In March, the company quietly started listing startups like Hims and Roman that prescribe and ship pills alongside traditional pharmacies such as CVS and Walmart.</p><p>That experience led to the company's relationship with HeyDoctor, GoodRx's Hirsch told Business Insider. </p><p>The new business line is a profitable one, Hirsch said, but he described the revenue it could bring in as "on the smaller side, mostly because Americans right now are just waking up to this idea of online medical visits." </p><h2>Others describe telemedicine and pharmacy services as a clear match</h2><p>Blink Health, a competing prescription drug discount service, began offering <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/blink-health-takes-hassle-out-getting-birth-control-pills-chaiken/">telemedicine visits for birth control</a> this month, alongside visits for men's health conditions like erectile dysfunction and hair loss. Unlike GoodRx Care, Blink offers prescription drug delivery as well. </p><p>"Investing in telemedicine and expanding our offerings was an obvious and easy decision," Blink Health CEO Geoffrey Chaiken said in a statement to Business Insider. "Our telemedicine offerings will continue to expand and we will have more details to share soon."</p><p>Krishna Yeshwant, who leads the life sciences investment team at GV, formerly Google Ventures, told Business Insider that he expects the trend of companies incorporating doctor's visits into their business models to continue. GV, through its consumer team, has invested in Pill Club, a company that prescribes and delivers birth control prescriptions. </p><p>Including a doctor's visit is "almost a prerequisite," he said, "because somebody needs to actually prescribe the medication. You can't go to CVS and get a new prescription for oral contraception."</p><h2>In today's on-demand economy, healthcare hasn't kept pace</h2><p>People in healthcare have been talking about telemedicine for a long time now. One of the major players, publicly-traded Teladoc, was founded in 2002. Yet these recent moves suggest telemedicine is today taking hold in a broader way among healthcare businesses.</p><p>According to a <a href="https://www.accenture.com/_acnmedia/pdf-94/accenture-2019-digital-health-consumer-survey.pdf">2019 survey from consulting firm Accenture</a>, 29% of the roughly 8,000 respondents surveyed said that they received some form of virtual care, up from 21% in a similar survey conducted in 2017. </p><p>Virtual healthcare reflects "a big difference and change that's happened in consumer expectations," said <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/victoria-l-summers-b6632b1">Victoria Summers</a>, a leader on the Consumer and Patient Health team at consulting firm ZS Associates.</p><p>"You have the ability to search basically whatever you want, at your fingertips 24 hours a day. So the idea of waiting a week to find out test results or a week to get to doctor to find out whatever that rash is - there's an increasingly lower and lower tolerance among consumers," Summers said. </p><p>Companies that pair prescribing with pharmacy delivery, like Hims and Roman, have attracted hundreds of millions in funding from investors. </p><p>And this month, one went public: the clear aligners company SmileDirectClub, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/smiledirectclub-founders-call-jpmorgans-dimon-after-ipo-2019-9">which raised $1.3 billion in an IPO, before tumbling in its stock market debut</a>. Pharmacy startups are getting into the business of prescribing medications - and it shows how a new business model is taking over in healthcare

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Donald Trump tried to wash his hands politically of the abortion issue.</li><li>Instead, the former president's statement disappointed some allies and left key questions resolved.</li></ul><p>Former President <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-said-abortion-bans-should-be-left-states-2024-4">Donald Trump</a> can't escape the issue of abortion rights.</p><p>Trump likely hoped that he could settle the issue with an over 4-minute-long video in which he said the future of abortion rights should be settled at the state level. Just days later, the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/arizona-supreme-court-reinstates-1864-abortion-ban-jail-doctors-2024">Arizona state Supreme Court</a> issued a ruling that provided a stark reminder that relegating the issue to the state level isn't a political panacea.</p><p>On Wednesday, the former president told reporters that the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-arizona-abortion-ruling-states-rights-4">Arizona court had gone too far</a> in ruling that an 1864, pre-Civil War near-total ban on abortions could be enforced.</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kari-lake-arizona-abortion-ban-good-law-2024-4">Fellow Republicans</a>, regardless of whether they had supported the ban before, rushed to condemn the decision underlining the political ramifications of the moment.</p><p>"Yeah, they did," Trump said in response to whether the court had gone too far, "and I think it'll be straightened out and, as you know, it's all about state's rights and it will be straightened out."</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-abortion-stance-timeline-2024-4">Trump's shifting views</a> on abortion have alienated some of his longtime allies. Marjorie Dannenfelser, the president of Susan B. Pro-Life America, a leading antiabortion group, and Sen. Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican, expressed their disappointment that the former president would not back a nationwide abortion ban. In response, Trump torched them both on social media.</p><p>"Many Good Republicans lost Elections because of this Issue, and people like Lindsey Graham, that are unrelenting, are handing Democrats their dream of the House, Senate, and perhaps even the Presidency…," Trump wrote in response to Graham's disappointment.</p><p>The former president has left some tantalizing questions unaddressed.</p><p>On Wednesday, Trump answered one of these questions by definitively promising he would not sign a nationwide abortion ban if he were to become president and Congress managed to pass such legislation. It is still unclear how Trump himself will vote on the issue. As a Florida resident, he will have the opportunity to vote on an abortion rights ballot initiative this November.</p><p>President Joe Biden's campaign has quickly tied Trump to every development. They've pointed out repeatedly that the former president has bragged about his role in appointing the three US Supreme Court justices that proved to be the deciding factor in the landmark reversal of Roe v. Wade. Biden's campaign has also released multiple ads tied explicitly to the issue of abortion rights. Vice President Kamala Harris even visited an abortion clinic.</p><p>"Elect me," Biden told reporters at the White House in response to a question about the Arizona ruling. "I'm in the 20th century — 21st century, not back then. They weren't even a state."</p><p>After the Arizona ruling, Biden's campaign predicted that voters would hold the former president accountable.</p><p>"What's happening in Arizona is only possible because Donald Trump overturned Roe v. Wade — it's cruel and it's a direct threat to our health and freedoms," Jen Cox, Biden-Harris senior advisor for Arizona, said in a statement to Business Insider. "No one should discount the impact this has on women across our state and -- as we saw in 2022 -- Democrats, Independents, and Republicans are going to hold Trump accountable."</p><h2>Politically, Biden has good reason to believe he's on solid ground.</h2><p>Abortion rights groups have rattled off an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/abortion-rights-ohio-virginia-kentucky-elections-gop-roe-v-wade-2023-11">unbroken string of victories</a> at the state level in either beating back further restrictions or expanding abortion access. Multiple polls also show that voters strongly detest restrictions. A KFF poll taken last month found that 71% of voters want abortion to be legal in all or most cases. It should not go unnoticed that Biden, who, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/joe-bidens-views-issues-abortion-afghanistan-education-race-police-crime-2022-9">as a young senator</a>, questioned Roe, is now strongly pushing reproductive rights as part of his reelection.</p><p>Still, putting abortion on the ballot will likely not be enough to save the president with a tepid approval rating. A Politico analysis found that when voters in five different states considered abortion rights, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.politico.com/news/2024/01/03/abortion-democrats-2024-election-00133506">the decisive margin</a> largely came from Republican voters who voted for other Republican candidates. It doesn't help matters that many leaders, including the former president, previously backed tougher restrictions on abortion even if, for political reasons, they may now try to distance themselves from those comments.</p><p>As the former president pointed out, conservatives may have to weigh the future of additional abortion restrictions with the possibility of losing key races.</p><p>"You must follow your heart on this issue, but remember, you must also win elections to restore our culture and, in fact, to save our country, which is currently, and very sadly, a nation in decline," Trump said.</p>

Save $30 on orders of $150 or more at Nike - and 7 other sales and deals happening now

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Vladimir Vladimirov/Getty Images</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul class="summary-list"><li><strong>I never pay for things with a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-get-a-debit-card-cash-atm">debit card</a> because I prefer to use my credit card, where I'm always getting the equivalent of 2% back or more on my purchases.</strong></li><li><strong>Credit cards also offer better protections, less liability in case of fraud, and more leverage with merchants.</strong></li><li><strong>As far as I'm concerned, there's rarely ever a reason to pay with debit.</strong></li><li><strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.</a></strong></li></ul><p>Nothing makes me cringe more than going to to stores and restaurants with my friends and watching them <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-check-your-debit-card-balance">pay with cash or a debit card</a>. Or worse, when the occasional person still pulls out a checkbook and writes a personal check, carefully noting their purchases in the register while the line stacks up behind them. Luckily, many businesses don't take checks anymore, but all of them still take debit cards (and even offer cash back sometimes).</p><p>To me, using a debit card is a violation of Being A Savvy Consumer 101. Here are the top five reasons why you should <em>never</em> pay for things with a debit card:</p><h2>1. You bear more fraud liability</h2><p>If the merchant's card terminal is hacked, it could result in your entire bank account being drained, taking <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-cancel-a-debit-card-lost-stolen">weeks or months to straighten out</a>. In the meantime, you won't have cash to pay for rent, bills, and other necessities. Meanwhile, if fraudulent activity occurs on your credit card, your liability is limited to $50 by law (and most card issuers waive this, taking your liability to zero).</p><h2>2. You won't get any credit card protections on your purchases</h2><p>With the exception of Citi cards (Citi has removed most purchase and travel protections from its cards), the majority of premium credit cards offer some form of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/purchase-protection-credit-card-uses-types-2019-6">additional protection on purchases</a>. These can include extended warranty protection, protection against damage or theft, and more. The specifics of these protections will vary depending on the specific card product, so review your card benefits statement for details.</p><h2>3. You're leaving money on the table</h2><p>For everyday purchases, you should be getting a minimum of 2% back, because you can get <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-cash-back-credit-cards">2% cash back on a card with no annual fee</a> (like the Citi DoubleCash Card or Fidelity Rewards Visa Signature Card). With premium travel credit cards offering rewards points when spending in bonus categories, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/credit-cards-for-everyday-spending-2019-5">it's not unusual to earn far more</a>.</p><p>I earn an effective minimum 4.5% cash back (or more) on travel and dining purchases with the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chase-sapphire-preferred-reserve-credit-card-comparison">Chase Sapphire Reserve</a>, since I spend the points on travel. In some states, that's roughly the same percentage as the sales tax! </p><h2>4. You lose leverage with the merchant</h2><p>If you have a problem with a credit card purchase and the merchant refuses to work with you, you can charge back the purchase with the credit card issuer. Simply the <em>threat</em> of doing this will give you substantial leverage with the merchant, because they risk losing their merchant account if it happens too often, and they will be charged large fees by their merchant processor if you follow through.</p><p>Most of the time, if you have a legitimate dispute, the bank will side with you over the merchant, and your purchase will be refunded (you won't have to make payments on the amount in dispute while the resolution process is underway).</p><h2>5. You don't get an interest-free grace period</h2><p>On most cards, if you're starting with a zero balance, you'll get up to a month before you need to pay a credit card balance off without incurring interest. That's an extra month that your money is available to earn interest in a high-yield savings account or otherwise work for you. Credit cards are a great way to help even out your expenses with your cash flow without paying any interest for the privilege.</p><p>Hopefully I've convinced you: Using your debit card to make purchases is an amateur move. Does it <em>ever</em> still make sense? <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/using-cash-vs-a-credit-card">Yes, it can</a>. Some merchants (such as marijuana dispensaries) don't accept credit cards, but do accept cash and debit cards. In this case, you won't have much of a choice. You might also be offered a discount to use a debit card versus a credit card, such as at some gas stations. If you are willing to risk it, the savings might add up. And of course, you might need cash at some point, and make a small purchase with a debit card in order to get cash back. </p><p>Paying with a debit card should be the exception rather than the rule, though. A <em>rare</em> exception. Paying with a debit card is leaving money on the table, and 4 more reasons I only ever pay with credit

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Temu is the top app in the Google Play and Apple App stores, ahead of TikTok, Instagram, and Amazon.</li><li>The super cheap marketplace sells apparel, makeup, electronics, homeware, and even bongs.</li></ul><p>In just a few months, e-commerce app Temu has stormed its way to the top of the download charts and is gaining attention for its bargain prices, which are so low that some shoppers think the website must be a scam.</p><p>A <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/post/preview?post_id=641c4989386467756f653e18&amp;mode=desktop">recent experience with an Insider reporter</a> ordering a basket of items showed that Temu is indeed legit, though he questioned the quality of certain items. And industry watchers say the company has a long way to go in terms of user experience – something that's crucial as it looks to take on the likes of Amazon. </p><p>Temu (pronounced<a href="https://www.temu.com/about-temu.html?refer_page_name=search_result&amp;refer_page_id=10009_1677680453466_9n785vv1nv&amp;refer_page_sn=10009&amp;_x_sessn_id=bkq1zijm2k" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> tee-moo</a>), which is headquartered in Boston but owned by Chinese firm PDD Holdings, launched in the US in September. It's listed as the top free app in both the <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps?gl=us" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Google Play store</a> and the <a href="https://apps.apple.com/us/charts/iphone" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Apple App Store</a>, ahead of TikTok, Amazon, and Instagram.</p><p>Similar to Amazon, it sells a vast array of items – ranging from fast fashion and makeup to electronics, homeware, and even bongs on both its website and app. It operates exclusively as a marketplace where sellers – who are predominantly based in China – sell goods to customers in the US and Canada. </p><p>So what do we know about the company and how does it keep its prices so low?</p><h2>'Shop like a billionaire'</h2><p>Temu created a buzz with its <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RgNuwb9lpeg" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Super Bowl ad</a> in February that showed a woman effortlessly purchasing various items on the Temu app on her phone. The tagline, "shop like a billionaire," suggested that shoppers can buy whatever they want without worrying about the cost. </p><p>"The idea is you can just keep running your credit card because your budget can afford it," Michael Felice, associate partner in the communications, media, and technology practice of consulting firm Kearney, told Insider.</p><p>It's clear from the homepage of Temu's website that the main focus is price. Graphics advertise a range of promotions on the site, and each item has a listed price and a percentage discount next to it. This is often as much as 80% off. A spokesperson for Temu did not confirm how these percentages are calculated. </p><h2>What brands does Temu sell?</h2><p>There aren't many recognizable western brands to shop on Temu. No results come up, for example, for Adidas, Apple, or Urban Decay – though when you search for the latter, a <a href="https://www.temu.com/1pc-12-colors-makeup-nude-colors-eyeshadow-palette-natural-nude-matte-shimmer-glitter-pigment-eye-shadow-pallete-set-waterproof-smokey-professional-beauty-makeup-kit-g-601099512205658.html?top_gallery_url=https%3A%2F%2Fimg.kwcdn.com%2Fproduct%2Fenhanced_images%2F3831c9dda7a3f0dd351942930d078f2c_enhanced.jpg&amp;spec_gallery_id=7320655&amp;refer_page_sn=10009&amp;refer_source=10022&amp;freesia_scene=2&amp;search_key=urban%20decay&amp;refer_page_el_sn=200049&amp;refer_page_name=search_result&amp;refer_page_id=10009_1678116880354_pgurqhzklr&amp;_x_sessn_id=zj8wsktw2m" target="_blank" rel="noopener">listing</a> comes up for an eyeshadow palette similar to its famous Naked palette.</p><div type="image" title="Eyeshadow palette on temu's website" height="1140" width="2136" msid="98946578" hostid="261"></div>There are other examples of apparent knockoff products: a search for Victoria's Secret's Pink brand pulled up a host of bags showing the "Pink" label, without any reference to the US brand in the listing. On both the Apple and Google app stores, Temu has a 4.6-star rating.</p><h2>Cutting out the middleman saves costs</h2><p>Temu says its "next-gen manufacturing model" – whereby it shares data on what consumers are shopping for and searching for on its site with its third-party sellers – helps to keep prices low. This enables sellers to better predict trends, plan production, and therefore reduce the risk of overproducing items that consumers don't want. These cost savings can then be passed on to the consumer, a spokesperson for Temu told Insider.</p><p>But experts say there are other factors contributing to its bargain prices. Most of the sellers are based in China, where manufacturing and labor costs are lower, and the manufacturer-to-consumer business model means that there's no middleman in the chain to take a slice of profits. Temu also provides sellers with free tools like access to its photo studios to ensure content on the site looks aesthetically similar. </p><p>"Temu is exposing a white space in the market wherein brands have been producing at extreme low cost – but along the value chain, there's so much incremental cost," Felice said. In other words, most manufacturers sell through so many layers of middlemen — each of whom wants their cut — that by the time an item is offered to a consumer, it's loaded up with add-on costs; with Temu, the middlemen are cut out of the process.</p><p>But for the average North American shopper, such low prices can actually be disconcerting, especially when they don't know much about Temu. </p><p>"With a site like Amazon, there's a degree of confidence … if something goes wrong, they've got your back," Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData Retail, told Insider. "I think with Temu, people don't have that confidence because it's not as well known," he added.</p><p>The low prices, combined with the fact that many of its items are shipped to the US from China, "automatically raises suspicions over whether it's genuine or not," Saunders said. Some Twitter users have expressed concerns that the site could be a "<a href="https://twitter.com/search?q=temu%20scam&amp;src=typed_query" target="_blank" rel="noopener">scam</a>."</p><p>Erica Miller, a YouTuber who runs the account OneCuteCouponer, showing shoppers how to use coupons and get the best deals online, told Insider that she first heard about Temu from her 16-year-old niece. "Immediately, I thought it was a scam," she said. "Even though I'm a bargain shopper, I still wasn't convinced."</p><p>Temu later contacted Miller – who is known for posts on discount retail – to make a sponsored video for her subscriber base. Miller was given up to $140 to spend on Temu and paid to post a video on her YouTube channel, reviewing her purchases. She ordered a bunch of products including apparel, kitchen tools, and an LED clock, and said she was impressed by the quality of these items.</p><p>"The price scares people at first, of course you think it's a scam, but once you know someone who's using Temu and getting all these bargains, everyone is hooked," Miller said. </p><h2>"You get what you pay for" when it comes to quality</h2><p>Insider's Danni Santana was also skeptical and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/post/preview?post_id=641c4989386467756f653e18&amp;mode=desktop">recently tested shopping on the site</a>, ordering four items, including a charging cable and a handheld electric blender. He concluded that while Temu isn't a scam, as all the items he ordered showed up, the quality of the products he ordered wasn't great. </p><p>His sentiments are shared by other consumers online:</p><p>"The quality is so bad that u wouldn't buy it for a dollar at the dollar store," one shopper <a href="https://www.bbb.org/us/ma/boston/profile/online-shopping/temucom-0021-553943/customer-reviews" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a> in a review on the Better Business Bureau's website. "You get what you pay for," another shopper <a href="https://www.bbb.org/us/ma/boston/profile/online-shopping/temucom-0021-553943/customer-reviews" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. </p><p>The company currently has a 2.09-star rating out of five on the BBB. Though there are positive reviews, its rating has dropped slightly since earlier in the month. There's also a new alert on the BBB page, informing shoppers that most items are shipped from China despite Temu being registered in the US. </p><p>In other reviews on BBB's site, consumers say they are frustrated by Temu's lengthy shipping times and the overwhelming amount of marketing emails they received once making an order – Insider's Santana shared similar grievances in his Temu review.</p><p>Temu <a href="https://www.temu.com/shipping-info.html?_x_sessn_id=bkq1zijm2k&amp;refer_page_name=about-temu&amp;refer_page_id=10027_1677680458290_vaezgz6dq9&amp;refer_page_sn=10027" target="_blank" rel="noopener">says</a> that customers should expect to wait between 7 and 15 business days for delivery, as most items are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/temu-chinese-shopping-app-becomes-most-popular-ecommerce-app-us-2023-1">shipped from China</a> – though it notes that this is mostly free. It also offers an express delivery option that adds $12.90 to an order. A spokesperson for Temu told Insider that it uses its parent company's supply chain and logistics network to ship these items.</p><p>If orders are running late, it<a href="https://www.temu.com/support/c3/why-is-there-no-tracking-update-f-49-s-154.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> says</a> it will give customers a small store credit, and free returns are available within 90 days of ordering.</p><p>But given that Americans are accustomed to Amazon's same-day or next-day delivery service and free returns, it could be a challenge for Temu to compete, Felice said.</p><h2><strong>The website 'feels a little makeshift'</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Temu penguin soft toy listing" height="1128" width="1504" msid="98946582" hostid="261"></div>Saunders said that Temu is currently hell-bent on driving app downloads. As well as its huge Super Bowl spot, <a href="https://www.temu.com/affiliate_seeding_entry.html?refer_page_name=home&amp;refer_page_id=10005_1678200708890_tlberkcgfm&amp;refer_page_sn=10005&amp;_x_sessn_id=zy0jcrzuuy&amp;is_back=1&amp;no_cache_id=3kqmn" target="_blank" rel="noopener">it's recruiting influencers</a> to promote the brand with offers of commission and free products. Temu is also asking users to encourage their friends to download the app and use a code <a href="https://twitter.com/search?q=temu%20code&amp;src=typed_query" target="_blank" rel="noopener">with the promise of free items</a>.<p>But despite the efforts to drive customers to the app, its interface is letting the side down, experts say. </p><p>"I think the visual merchandising of the site doesn't really meet what Americans are used to," Felice said, adding that it was "overwhelming to the senses … and sometimes feels a little makeshift."</p><p>A search on its website doesn't always produce you the results you'd expect. Other items have confusingly long descriptions.</p><p>Felice says it will take more than heavy discounting to woo the American consumer.</p><p>"We make that sacrifice occasionally in some off-price shopping, because it becomes a scavenger hunt. But there's always the question, is it too cheap to be good? <ul class="summary-list"><li>Starbucks' new CEO plans to work a monthly store shift.</li><li>Former retail executives say it's the only way to truly learn the pain points of your business.</li></ul><p>When Laxman Narasimhan came on board as Starbucks' next CEO seven months ago, he immersed himself in the brand, spending time at the chain's manufacturing plants and getting barista training at its stores.</p><p>It's a practice he plans to continue now that he's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/starbucks-ceo-laxman-narasimhan-life-career-bio-2023-3">officially been installed at the helm of Starbucks</a>. </p><p>"To keep us close to the culture and our customers, as well as to our challenges and opportunities, I intend to continue working in stores for a half day each month," he wrote in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/starbucks-ceo-laxman-narasimhan-first-annual-letter-to-staff">a letter to Starbucks staff</a> last month, "and I expect each member of the leadership team to also ensure our support centers stay connected and engaged in the realities of our stores for discussion and improvement." </p><p>Narasimhan's approach — not just visiting the stores he oversees, but working at them — is one that experts say is crucial to running a brick-and-mortar business. But it's fallen by the wayside in recent decades as department store chains curtail the leadership training programs that installed future executives at the store level, and fewer merchants sit at the helm of big-name retailers.</p><p>Which means leaders aren't as connected to the employees that sell their products and the customers that consume them, said Lee Peterson, a longtime merchant and now executive vice president of thought leadership at retail consulting firm WD Partners. </p><p>"People in the office, they're clueless. They're looking at papers of what's sold ... they know where it's sold. But what really matters is what people say, what people think, and what people feel," he said. </p><h2>Working at the store level can lead to 'aha moments'</h2><div type="image" title="Greg Foran" height="2000" width="2666" msid="99221824" hostid="261"></div><p>Anyone who's worked a retail job has probably had this experience: your manager, perhaps with a look of fear in their eye, will get a few days' heads up that the corporate brass is coming to visit your store. You and your coworkers then spend the ensuing 48 or 72 hours swiping dust off the top shelves, polishing the scuff marks off the floor, and compulsively straightening the displays. </p><p>But there's a big difference between your CEO and their entourage sweeping through to see if things are up to snuff and that leader working a shift in your shoes, and it's the latter that makes the real difference, Mark Cohen, the director of retail studies at Columbia University and the former CEO of Sears Canada, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/retail-ceos-leaving-stepping-down-trend-explained-2023-1">told Insider earlier this year</a>.</p><p>"Many people that I've observed either don't have that view, or aren't willing to do that, or they pay lip service to it," Cohen said. "They visit a few stores, they talk to some people. But they don't really get in touch with what is actually going on." </p><p>Some CEOs make store shifts a hallmark of their management style. Former Walmart CEO Greg Foran <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/walmart-us-ceo-says-store-visits-make-him-grumpy-2019-3">used to visit stores every week</a> to observe factors like customer service, inventory levels, in-stock levels, and assortment. Years later, as the top executive at Air New Zealand, he hasn't changed his ways — he's been <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/feature/air-new-zealands-ceo-greg-foran-serves-water-on-flight-photo-goes-viral-3629924" target="_blank" rel="noopener">spotted working as a member of the cabin crew</a> on his company's flights. </p><p>Peterson, from WD Partners, said that when he began working as a merchant for The Limited and Victoria's Secret parent L Brands, he spent six months working at the retailer's stores across the country — after that, he was required to visit stores every Thursday, don a store associate badge, and get on the sales floor. </p><p>That store-level experience meant that he could not only observe for himself what customers were buying, but could quiz workers at stores nationwide on their own pain points, he said. </p><p>Peterson said one of his aha moments from spending time in stores was that customers hated waiting in a long line to check out, so corporate added a second register to break the line in two, a practice that's commonplace in stores today. But that's not something he could have observed sitting in his office in Columbus, Ohio, he said. </p><h2>Fewer retail CEOs got their start working in stores </h2><div type="image" title="Lowe's CEO Marvin Ellison gestures while sitting on stage at conference" height="1666" width="2222" msid="99221827" hostid="261"></div><p>Of course, times have changed — in the past, many retail CEOs got their start at the store level. </p><p>There are a few current CEOs who have: Marvin Ellison, the CEO of Lowe's, got his start <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lowes-ceo-marvin-ellison-life-career-2019-2" rel="">making $4.35 an hour as a Target security guard.</a> Walmart CEO Doug McMillon <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/walmart-ceo-doug-mcmillon-bio-career-life-salary-first-job-2021-6">started unloading trucks at the retail giant</a> while he was still a teenager. Costco chief exec W. Craig Jelinek's first job was as a food stocker at a discount department store, and he<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/costco-ceo-craig-jelinek-bio-2019-3" rel=""> worked his way up the ranks at Costco</a> over three decades. </p><p>Others went through management-training programs operated by department stores. Brooklyn-based department store Abraham &amp; Straus — which was later absorbed into Macy's — ran a program that trained up future CEOs like Gap and J.Crew's Mickey Drexler and Abercrombie &amp; Fitch's Mike Jeffries. </p><p>But those programs have largely fallen by the wayside, Catherine Lepard, the global managing partner of the executive-recruiting firm Heidrick &amp; Struggles' retail and direct-to-consumer practice, previously told Insider. </p><p>As department stores started facing stiff competition from specialty stores, they scrambled to cut costs. "That's where we started to see less of the longer-term investment in training," she said. </p><p>These days, finding a qualified retail CEO <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/retail-ceos-leaving-stepping-down-trend-explained-2023-1">seems like one of the hardest jobs to fill</a>, with many companies looking outside the retail industry. Narasimhan joins Starbucks after a stint at PepsiCo and two years leading Lysol-maker Reckitt, experience that readies him for the world's largest coffee chain. But he's also <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/starbucks-ceo-laxman-narasimhan-life-career-bio-2023-3">a coffee-industry outsider</a> who's inheriting <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/howard-schultz-father-senate-congress-ed-markey-testimony-2023-3">a contentious relationship</a> with Starbucks union leaders, one that's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bernie-sanders-starbucks-howard-schultz-anti-union-hearing-2023-3">drawn the attention of lawmakers</a>. </p><p>Plus, not all of Narasimhan's new employees are thrilled with the idea of him working alongside them.
