<ul class="summary-list"><li>A <keyword id="105921" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="maryland" source="Orion">Maryland</keyword> Republican said he won't concede election despite trailing by more than 300,000 votes.</li><li><keyword id="15511435" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="peroutka" source="Orion">Peroutka</keyword> alleged "odd and suspicious" election activity but provided no specifics. </li></ul>The GOP's nominee for Maryland's attorney general has refused to concede, despite trailing his opponent by more than 300,000 votes.<br /><br />Hard-right candidate <keyword id="15511437" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="michael-peroutka" source="Orion">Michael Peroutka</keyword> lost his race to Democrat Anthony Brown late on Tuesday, <a href="https://apnews.com/article/maryland-governor-race-2022-midterm-election-a9cd90c10e15c3afe7819100f0f1061d">per the Associated Press</a>. As of Friday, <a href="https://elections.maryland.gov/elections/2022/general_results/gen_results_2022_3.html">Maryland reported 100% of the votes counted</a>, showing Brown with 60.71% of the vote. <br /><br />Both Brown — and Democrat Wes Moore — made history as <a href="https://apnews.com/article/maryland-governor-race-2022-midterm-election-a9cd90c10e15c3afe7819100f0f1061d">the state's first Black attorney general and governor</a>, respectively. <br /><br />Following his loss, Perouta emailed supporters saying he will not concede, suggesting that electoral fraud had taken place, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2022/11/10/maryland-attorney-general-peroutka-concede/" target="_blank">according to The Washington Post</a>.  A version of that statement was also <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Patriots4Peroutka/posts/pfbid02NdDSe3DNVBpSbyhwPtSGpiBMwV2T1ofWRf2iMVtKkGKYxXmDxBYeTeoAeYWZtzr5l">posted to a Facebook page</a> attributed to his campaign. <br /><br />"During yesterday's voting, many odd and suspicious incidents were reported by poll watchers, and more reports are being gathered today," it read.<br /><br />It added that Perouta plans to "investigate these strange occurrences and I do not plan to concede the race."<br /><br /><a href="https://www.facebook.com/Patriots4Peroutka/posts/pfbid02Tm95VgVTEfp8uMRJANmNcJEUey1HaEuFhe3eBzzgS3T1NsQuZqU9BpVzzxVXxz3Fl">In a later post</a> on the same Facebook page, a post called for voters who cast their ballot at a Howard County middle school to contact Peroutka, saying he is looking to "speak with any election workers from that site, not just poll watchers, but any officials, judges, or chief judges."<br /><br /><keyword id="15511436" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="peroutka-didn" source="Orion">Peroutka didn</keyword>'t provide evidence for his assertions, and did not immediately respond to Insider's request for further comment, which was sent outside of working hours. <br /><br />Meanwhile, Maryland State Board of Elections (SEB) said Marylanders can be "confident" in the result, per a statement seen by the Post.<br /><br />The board "works with the local boards of elections to determine whether referral of reported activities to the Office of the State Prosecutor is warranted," the statement read.<br /><br />"At this time, SBE is not aware of any such incidents. Marylanders can be confident in the integrity of the state's election processes and that any potentially inappropriate activity will be thoroughly investigated."<br /><br />Maryland Republican Party Chairman <keyword id="4526179" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="dirk-haire" source="Orion">Dirk Haire</keyword> told the paper that he had seen no unusual election activity.<br /><br />Peroutka is a former Anne Arundel County Council member and former debt-collection attorney. He was a board member of League of the South between 2012 and 2014, <a href="https://www.vice.com/en/article/qjkbdb/michael-peroutka-gop-maryland-attorney-general">according to Vice</a>. The group is now <a href="https://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/extremist-files/group/league-south">designated a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center</a>.<br /><br />Peroutka has disavowed racist statements by the group's leader, but not the group itself, Vice reported. <br /><br />In the Maryland attorney general race he campaigned on issues of gun rights, protection of the elderly and the "pre-born," border security, and opposing health mandates, <a href="https://patriots4peroutka.com/pages/endorsements">per his website</a>.<br /><br />He also called for the prosecution of officials who "have exceeded their lawful authority" and promised to "investigate discrepancies and anomalies in recent elections in Maryland." <br /><br />In October, <a href="https://patriots4peroutka.com/blogs/press/how-do-they-know">Peroutka commented on the 2020 presidential election,</a> saying that the media was wrong to call election denialism "The Big Lie." <br /><br />"Their claim that there is no evidence of fraud or corruption is itself nothing more than a blithe assertion — without evidence or support — and actually impossible to prove," he wrote. <br /><br />There have been a wealth of <a href="https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/exhaustive-fact-check-finds-little-evidence-of-voter-fraud-but-2020s-big-lie-lives-on">independent fact checks</a>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gop-lawyers-reviewed-voter-fraud-lawsuits-presidential-election-2022-7">lawsuits</a>, and <a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-elections-arizona-phoenix-conspiracy-theories-d38321441bcd6cea58421f6871b4f74e">election investigations</a>, none of which have succeeded in uncovering evidence of widespread election fraud in the 2020 election. <br /><br /><strong><em>Correction: November 11, 2022</em></strong><em> — An earlier version of this story mischaracterized Peroutka's remarks. <p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul><li><strong>A British woman has died fighting alongside an all-female Kurdish militant group in Syria.</strong></li><li><strong>Anna Campbell, a qualified plumber from east Sussex, was 26.</strong></li><li><strong>She is the first British woman to die fighting alongside Kurdish forces.</strong></li><li><strong>Campbell persuaded her commanders to let her fight Turkish forces in Afrin, and even dyed her hair from blonde to black to look less conspicuously Western.</strong></li></ul><p><br>A British woman who travelled to Syria to fight against ISIS alongside Kurdish forces has died.</br></p><p>Anna Campbell, 26, spent months opposing ISIS in the beseiged city of&#xa0;Deir Ezzor; but ultimately died in action against Turkish forces, who have been attacking Kurdish fighters inside Syria.</p><p>The native of Lewes, east Sussex, volunteered for the US-backed Kurdish Women's Protection Units (YPJ), the all-female affiliate army of the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG).</p><p>The convoy she was travelling in near the city of Afrin was struck by a Turkish missile, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/mar/19/briton-kurds-anna-campbell-dies-fighting-turkey-syria-afrin">The Guardian reported</a>.</p><p>She is believed to be the first British woman to die fighting alongside Kurdish forces in Syria. Several men, including 24-year-old&#xa0;<a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/jac-holmes-briton-fighting-isis-dies-clearing-landmines-raqqa-syria-2017-10">Jac Holmes</a>,&#xa0;have died fighting for the Kurds over the past few years.</p><p>Campbell, who was a plumber in the UK, travelled to Syria in 2017, <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-43453292">the BBC reported</a>. While there she was given the nom-the-guerre&#xa0;Helîn Qerecox, The Guardian said.</p><p>She originally went to fight ISIS in Deir Ezzor, but later persuaded her commanders to send her to Afrin to fight against Turkey - and dyed her blonde hair black to convince them.</p><p>An unnamed YPJ source told The Guardian: "They refused at first, but she was adamant, and even dyed her blonde hair black so as to appear less conspicuous as a westerner. Finally they gave in and let her go."</p><p>Turkish forces launched a ground and air offensive against Kurdish militants in Afrin, which is near the Turkish border, alongside the Free Syrian Army in January. Turkey considers the YPJ and YPG an extension of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-20971100">whom they see as terrorists</a>. The EU and US also consider the PKK a terrorist organisations.</p><p>The YPG <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/mar/19/kurdish-ypg-militia-vows-make-afrin-ongoing-nightmare-turkish-syrian-rebel-forces">withdrew from Afrin on early Sunday morning</a> after Turkish and Syrian rebel forces besieged the city. Some 150,000 civilians also fled over the weekend.</p><p>Dirk Campbell, Anna's father, told the BBC's "Today" radio programme on Monday:</p><p>"She was determined to live in a way that made a difference to the world. She was determined to act on that and do whatever it took. She was prepared to put her life on the line, actually. There aren't many people who do that.</p><p>"It's hard to understand but you have to realise that people who are young are very idealistic and very passionate. That is the age of idealism, the age that Anna was, and there are a lot of people like her."</p><p>He added: "In retrospect I think that I probably should have done more to dissuade her, but I knew that she would never have forgiven me if I had actively tried to prevent her from going. A British woman who fought ISIS in an all-female combat unit has been killed in Syria

<p>Two announcers have accused pitcher Clay Buchholz of using an illegal substance during the Red Sox win over the Blue Jays on Wednesday night. But a closer look at the evidence is not very convincing.</p>
<p>Shortly after the game, Dirk Hayhurst, a former pitcher and current announcer for Rogers Sportsnet went on Twitter and <a href="https://twitter.com/TheGarfoose/statuses/329807220466397184">accused Buccholz of adding a substance to the ball</a>, comparing him to a fictional character that admitted to <keyword id="24320" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="cheating">cheating</keyword> in the movie "Major League"...</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">"Forget the hair, I just saw video of Buchholz loading the ball with some Eddie Harris worthy slick'em painted up his left forearm. Wow."</p>
<p>Hayhurst later posted this picture to Twitter, which appears to be taken off a television or monitor using his phone...</p>

<p>Jack Morris, another Blue Jays announcer also came right out and accused Buchholz of cheating. <a href="http://espn.go.com/boston/mlb/story/_/id/9236955/boston-red-sox-manager-john-farrell-miffed-jack-morris-allegations-clay-buchholz">When asked what he thought of the images</a><em></em>, Morris said "he's throwing a spitter. Cause that's what it is."</p>
<p>It is clear that Buchholz touches his forearm, but those images are hardly proof that he added a foreign substance to the ball.</p>
<p>Going back and reviewing about half of Buchholz's pitches from the game*, we found just a single instance of Buchholz touching his arm in the manner shown above. This was during the first inning, just after Buchholz had walked a batter and was about to face Jose Bautista...</p>

<p>There does not appear to be anything obvious on the forearm other than glistening sweat. Also notice that immediately after touching his forearm, Buchholz wipes his fingers on his backside, something he does before almost every pitch.</p>

<p>Again, there does not appear to be anything obviously illegal on the forearm.</p>
<p>But what about that particular pitch? It was a cutter and it looked like any other decent cutter...</p>

<p>Finally, here is another view of Buchholz's forearm from the seventh inning. There still does not appear to be any foreign substance...</p>

<p>The next day, <a href="http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/dirk-hayhurst-says-clay-buchholz-was-cheating/">Hayhurst stuck to his story</a>, that "with fingers loaded" Buchholz took hold of the ball. </p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">"I stand by that statement...Furthermore, I don’t feel a damn bit sorry about it."</p>
<p>Maybe Hayhurst and Morris did see something. And maybe Buchholz is cheating. But that is a damning statement to make against somebody based on what is circumstantial evidence at best.</p>
<p>* <em>While reviewing the footage of the game, we tried to stick to the most important situations, such as runners on base or when Buchholz was facing one of the Blue Jays' better hitters.</em></p>
