Combined, these patterns offer evidence that the dinosaurs lived in herds.</p><p>"I went to this site aiming to find at least one nice dinosaur skeleton. We ended up with 80 skeletons and more than 100 eggs (some with embryos preserved inside!)" Diego Pol, a researcher with the Egidio Feruglio <keyword id="11954587" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="paleontology" source="Orion">paleontology</keyword> museum in Patagonia and the lead author of the new study, told Insider via email. </p><p>He called the site "one of a kind."</p><p>Before this discovery, researchers thought herding behavior was restricted to dinosaurs that came much later, in the very late Jurassic and early Cretaceous periods. That's because the earliest fossil evidence of sauropod herds only dates back 150 million years. This nesting ground, however, pushes that timeline back more than 40 million years. It's the earliest known evidence of social groups among dinosaurs, the study authors said.</p><h2>X-rays offer a peek into fossilized dinosaur eggs</h2><div type="image" title="mussasaurus eggs patagonia" height="3000" width="4000" msid="87224841" hostid="261"></div><p>Argentine paleontologists discovered the first Mussaurus skeletons at this Patagonian site in the late 1970s. The dinosaurs they found were no more than 6 inches long. Unaware that they'd uncovered newborns, the researchers named the creature "mouse lizard" because of the skeletons' tiny size.</p><p>Pol decided to reexplore the area starting in 2002, and by 2013, he'd helped find the first adult Mussaurus fossils there. Those bones revealed that full-grown versions of these "mouse lizards" were closer in size to modern-day hippos. They grew to weigh about 1.5 tons, reaching lengths of 26 feet from nose to tail tip. But infants could fit in the palm of a human hand.</p><div type="image" title="mussasaurus eggs patagonia" height="729" width="976" msid="87224844" hostid="261"></div><p>Since then, Pol's team has also uncovered and studied the contents of the nesting ground, which measures just under half a square mile. In 2017, he took 30 of the eggs to a lab in France, and his group then used X-ray technology to peek inside and confirm the species of the embryos without breaking the shells.</p><p>By analyzing the sizes and types of bones in the nesting ground, the researchers determined that the animals were buried near counterparts of a similar age. Some clusters had juveniles less than a year old, others consisted of individuals that were slightly older but not yet fully grown, and finally, there were smatterings of adults that had died solo or in pairs.</p><p>That type of age segregation, the researchers said, is a key sign of herds: Juveniles hung out with others their age while adults looked for food and protected the community. </p><p>"They were resting together and likely died during a drought," Pol said. "This is compatible with a herd that stays together during many years and within which the animals get close to each other to rest, or to forage, or do other daily activities."</p><p>Another strong indication of herd behavior is a nesting ground itself: If Mussaurus lived as a community, it would make sense that they'd lay eggs in a common area. </p><h2>Living in herds may have helped Mussaurus survive</h2><div type="image" title="mussasaurus eggs patagonia" height="971" width="1772" msid="87224847" hostid="261"></div><p>To figure out the fossils' ages, researchers examined minerals in volcanic ash that was scattered around the eggs and skeletons, and determined that the fossils were about 193 million years old. </p><p>Previously, scientists thought this type of dinosaur lived during the late Triassic period, about 221 million to 205 million years ago. But the new date suggests instead that Mussaurus thrived during the early Jurassic period. That, in turn, is evidence that Mussaurus' ancestors survived a mass extinction event 200 million years ago.</p><p>The key to that survival, the study suggests, may have been their herding behavior.</p><p>"These were social animals and we think this may be an important factor to explain their success," Pol said. </p><div type="image" title="mussasaurus eggs patagonia" height="1888" width="4000" msid="87224849" hostid="261"></div><p>Communal living likely helped Mussaurus find enough food, perhaps by making it easier for them to forage over larger areas.</p><p>Mussaurus of the same size would likely "group together to coordinate their activities," Pol said, given that larger adults and tinier juveniles moved at different speeds.</p><p>He added that given the size difference between newborns and adults, it probably took these dinosaurs many years to reach full size. So young Mussaurus might have been vulnerable to predation.</p><p>By staying in herds, adults could better protect their young.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Earlier this month, paleontologists announced the discovery of the largest soft-shelled egg ever found.</li><li>The researchers think the football-sized specimen, which was discovered in <keyword id="6354781" type="LOCATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Antarctica">Antarctica</keyword>, came from a giant, swimming reptile.</li><li>But other scientists think the giant egg could have been <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/early-dinosaurs-laid-soft-shelled-eggs-like-turtles-2020-6">laid by an early dinosaur</a>.</li></ul><p>After a mysterious, 66-million-year-old fossil was found in Antarctica, it sat unstudied for nearly a decade.</p><p>Researchers weren't sure what the object was or where it came from, so they referred to it as "The Thing." </p><p>A <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-020-2377-7">study</a> published this month, however, solved part of the mystery: A group of paleontologists announced that "The Thing" is a giant, soft-shelled egg — the largest such egg ever discovered.</p><p>"This is the biggest one by a long shot," Lucas Legendre, lead author of the study, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/early-dinosaurs-laid-soft-shelled-eggs-like-turtles-2020-6">told Business Insider</a>, adding, "it's massive — about the size of an American football — and looks exactly like a lizard or snake egg."</p><p>The fossil's size and geographic origin raised an obvious question, though: "We were curious what animal could've laid that egg," Legendre said.</p><p>His group thinks it came from to a massive marine reptile — such as <a href="https://ocean.si.edu/through-time/ancient-seas/meals-mighty-mosasaur">a mosasaur</a> or plesiosaur — that preyed on fish, sharks, and other underwater creatures. But that's a controversial conclusion. </p><h2>An egg that's hard to beat</h2><p>Legendre's colleagues discovered "The Thing" in 2011, off the coast of Antarctica on Seymour Island, then brought it to Chile's National Museum of Natural History.</p><p>The researchers identified the fossil as an undiscovered type of egg, which they named Antarcticoolithus bradyi. They did not find any fossil remains of the creature that laid it.</p><p>The egg has a deflated quality, Legendre said, which suggests the animal inside hatched before the egg was fossilized.</p><p>Based on the egg's dimensions (11 inches by 7 inches), he added, the animal that laid it would have been more than 20 feet in length without counting its tail. That's about twice the length of a great white shark.</p><p><div type="image" title="Legendreetal_egg_simple" height="588" width="1004" msid="76662842" hostid="261"></div></p><p>The size aligns what paleontologists know about swimming reptiles like plesiosaurs: Some of the largest plesiosaurs ever found come from Antarctica and reached lengths of 32 feet or more.</p><p>The rock formation where the egg was found also contained skeletons from baby mosasaurs and plesiosaurs, along with adult specimens. Together, that evidence suggests this area of Antarctica could have been "a sort of a nursery site with shallow protected water — a cove environment where the young ones would have had a quiet setting to grow up," Legendre said in a press release.</p><p><div type="image" title="Hueichaleo_reconstruction_1 lowres" height="2000" width="1400" msid="76662848" hostid="261"></div></p><p>But the conclusion that a plesiosaur or mosasaur laid this egg challenges a prevailing idea: Many scientists don't think such creatures laid <keyword id="18059" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Eggs">eggs</keyword> at all. </p><p>"Laying an enormous shelled egg underwater would have created all sorts of problems for hatching infant reptile, which would have needed to surface almost immediately to breathe air," Ben Kear, a paleontologist from Uppsala University  in Sweden, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/early-dinosaurs-laid-soft-shelled-eggs-like-turtles-2020-6">told Business Insider</a>.</p><h2>Some experts think the Antarctic egg came from a dinosaur</h2><p>If a marine reptile didn't lay this egg, what did?</p><p>The egg's age and size suggest it could have been laid by giant Sauropods that roamed the Earth during that time, Legendre said. Sauropods were herbivorous, long-necked <keyword id="6533782" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Dinosaurs">dinosaurs</keyword> like Brontosaurus or Diplodocus.</p><p>But the egg's elongated shape doesn't match that of other dinosaur eggs, which were more spherical. Plus, Legendre added, the only dinosaurs that lived in Antarctica 66 million years ago are known to have laid hard-shelled eggs.</p><p><div type="image" title="Hueichaleo_hatching_white" height="2368" width="5372" msid="76662855" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Another revelation from the prehistoric world could help solve this mystery. <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-020-2412-8">A recent study</a> of fossilized eggs from the Gobi Desert revealed that two dinosaur species — Protoceratops and Mussaurus — had left behind clutches of leathery eggs with soft shells.</p><p>Until now, every dino egg ever found had a hard shell, like those of birds. But the new finding showed that some of the earliest dinosaurs laid <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/early-dinosaurs-laid-soft-shelled-eggs-like-turtles-2020-6">soft-shelled eggs like turtles do</a>.</p><p>"I've been excavating in Mongolia for 20 years now, and we find a lot of dinosaur eggs. But these clutches tell us something very different from what we knew before," Mark Norell, lead author of the study and paleontologist from the American Museum of Natural History, told Business Insider.</p><p>Until now, scientists thought that hard-shelled eggs arose just once during the early history of dinosaurs — representing an advantageous evolutionary milestone that allowed the animals to flourish. Hard shells protect developing embryos from drying out, and make it possible for parents to lie on top of their nests without crushing their brood.</p><p>But this discovery helped the study authors determine that the oldest dinosaurs laid soft-shelled eggs, and that hard-shelled eggs cropped up much later in the dinosaur fossil record than paleontologists previously thought.</p><h2>Researchers found eggs that were leathery and soft </h2><p>Norell and his colleagues found the soft-shelled eggs in 1997, at a site called Ukhaa Tolgod in Mongolia.</p><p>They discovered at least 12 eggs and embryos belonging to Protoceratops, a 75-million-year-old sheep-sized herbivore that preceded Triceratops. Six embryos in the Protoceratops clutch preserved nearly complete skeletons, and two of the Protoceratops may have already hatched before being fossilized.</p><p>"It was clearly a concentration of very, very small animals curled up in fetal positions, like you'd find inside an egg" Norell said. "It'd barely be four inches long if you stretched one out."</p><p><div type="image" title="Protoceratops embryos" height="1364" width="1725" msid="76429512" hostid="261"></div></p><p>The other eggs belonged to Mussaurus, a 20-foot, long-necked, herbivore that lived between 227 and 208.5 million years. </p><p>Norell brought them back to his museum in New York City for further examination. But it wasn't until recently that he and other paleontologists had the technology to examine the clutches properly. </p><p>He and his colleagues discovered that nine of the Protoceratops embryos were surrounded by egg-shaped, black-and-white halos. Norell's co-author, Jasemina Wiemann, used a special type of microscope to isolate the minerals left behind in those halos from the surrounding rock and chemically analyzed them.</p><p>She found evidence of an dark brown, semi-transparent, multi-layered eggshell membrane — a membrane that lacked all the microscopic mineral elements that would've indicated the existence of a hard-shell.</p><p>Rather, these Protoceratops eggs were leathery and soft, and the Mussaurus eggs shared the same features.</p><p><div type="image" title="Soft turtle eggshells" height="3000" width="4077" msid="76429517" hostid="261"></div></p><p>"It was quite exciting to see that they looked exactly like soft-shelled snake or turtle eggs," Wiemann told Business Insider. </p><h2>Constructing a dino egg evolutionary tree</h2><p>Armed with that data, another study co-author, Matteo Fabbri, helped map out a evolutionary tree that compared the Protoceratops and Mussaurus egg features with those from flying reptiles named pterosaurs, crocodiles, and dinosaurs.</p><p>Fabbri and his colleagues found that hard-shelled eggs had evolved at least three times in the dinosaur family tree: once in the Ornithopods, which included duck-billed dinosaurs; once in the giant Sauropods like Titanosaurs; and once in the Therapods (like T. rex) of the late Cretaceous period. </p><p><div type="image" title="Protoceratops eggs" height="1188" width="1725" msid="76429526" hostid="261"></div></p><p>The study authors' conclusion matches the hard-shelled eggs that have already been found in the fossil record — eggs belonging to species in the aforementioned dinosaur groups.</p><p>While paleontologists have found skeletons from countless other, older dinosaur species, they've found no eggs to match.</p><p>"We have all these other animals, but we don't have any eggs. It's bizarre," Norell said. And that gets me very, very excited," Pratt said.</p><p>What may that sequel involve? <ul class="summary-list"><li>New calculations suggest that 1.7 billion T. rexes lived on Earth from 65.5-68 million years ago.</li><li>Scientists have uncovered fewer than 100 fossilized T. rexes, so there may be more to discover.</li></ul><p>A new <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/pala.12648" target="_blank" rel="noopener">study</a> estimates 1.7 billion <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-paleontologists-got-wrong-about-tyrannosaurus-rex-2019-3">Tyrannosaurus rexes</a> roamed the earth between <a href="https://www.si.edu/newsdesk/factsheets/tyrannosaurus-rex" target="_blank" rel="noopener">66 million and 68 million years ago</a>, but scientists have recovered <a href="https://news.berkeley.edu/2021/04/15/how-many-t-rexes-were-there-billions/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fewer than 100 of them</a>.</p><p>So the big question is: Where are all the dino bones?</p><p>This dichotomy between how many T. rexes lived and how few fossils we have of them shows us just how rare fossilization is and how much more we have to learn about these majestic creatures.</p><h2>How scientists count T. rex's total population</h2><p>It turns out, estimating the total number of T. rexes requires some complicated calculations, <a href="https://ib.berkeley.edu/people/faculty/marshallc" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Charles Marshall</a>, a paleontologist at the University of California, Berkeley, told Insider.</p><p>And scientists have yet to settle on a concrete number.</p><div type="image" title="Cartoon illustration of a T. rex dinosaur roaring." height="1510" width="1986" msid="100553862" hostid="261" sizebytes="316512"></div><p>Marshall was the lead author of an <a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.abc8300" target="_blank" rel="noopener">earlier study</a> that estimated <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/total-t-rex-population-study-2021-4">2.5 billion T. rexes</a> once roamed Earth. That was about 32% higher than the latest estimate.</p><p>But the author of the new study and evolutionary ecologist at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz, <a href="https://www.blogs.uni-mainz.de/fb10-zoo-ecology/prof-dr-eva-m-griebeler-publications/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Eva Griebeler</a>, saw an opportunity to improve upon the model that Marshall and his team built.</p><p>Marshall and his team created a model factoring in several different variables, including T. rex population density, average body mass index, average life span, geographic range, age of sexual maturity, number of eggs laid, survival rates, and generation time.</p><p>In the new study, Griebeler said she "applied a much more realistic survivorship curve" to bring the total number of T. rexes down to 1.7 billion.</p><p>"It looks like what she's done is very clever and a significant advance beyond the data that we use in our study," Marshall said. "I've got no complaints. It looks like a better set of survivorship curves than we used."</p><p>It's impossible to know for sure exactly how many T. rexes lived during their roughly 2 million years on Earth, but Marshall's model and Griebeler's research provide a reasonable estimate other scientists can build on.</p><h2>Where are all the T. rex bones?</h2><p>Of the roughly 1.7 billion, or so, T. rexes who roamed our planet, scientists have only uncovered a few hundred fossils, equating to fewer than 100 total dinosaurs.</p><div type="image" title="Fossilized femur a 65 million year old T. rex." height="683" width="1024" msid="100553867" hostid="261" sizebytes="68488"></div><p>And only about 30 of them are anything close to complete skeletons, <a href="https://www.umt.edu/geosciences/people/default.php?ID=623" target="_blank" rel="noopener">George Stanley</a>, a retired paleontologist and professor emeritus at the University of Montana, told Insider.</p><p>"If you discover a T-rex tooth during an excavation, that's a big deal for your day or week's work," Stanley said.</p><p>Paleontologists are more likely to find fragments of isolated bones, teeth, and claws than a perfectly preserved skeleton of a T. rex or any other dinosaur. And even then, finding any kind of fossil is rare.</p><p>That's because the conditions have to be just right for fossilization to occur in the first place.</p><p>To become a fossil, the body of an animal must be buried, and in most cases, animal remains are consumed or destroyed by other animals shortly after death, <a href="https://www.geol.umd.edu/~tholtz/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Richard Holtz</a>, a vertebrate paleontologist and principal lecturer at the University of Maryland, told Insider.</p><p>"Only the smallest fraction of individuals make it to become a fossil, and only a small fraction of those are discovered," Holtz said.</p><div type="image" title="A person brushing away a fossilized dinosaur bone in the dirt." height="683" width="1024" msid="100553869" hostid="261" sizebytes="90898"></div><p>And even if the remains aren't eaten or carried off by other animals, fossilization is also heavily dependent on the environment.</p><p>A dinosaur living in the mountains or the open plains, for example, is much less likely to become a fossil because burial is more difficult in those areas than in the lowlands where sediment from the mountains runs off, Holtz said.</p><p>"Only individuals that lived and died in the right spots are likely to be covered over by sand or silt or clay and thus possibly preserved," Holtz said.</p><h2>Scientists actually have more T. rex fossils than many other dinosaurs</h2><p>T. rexes lived in the lowland floodplains with plenty of sediment for burial, which is why scientists actually have more fossils of T. rex and know more about them than many other dinosaurs, Holtz said.</p><p>Despite their prime conditions for fossilization, if Giebeler's calculations are correct, scientists have only found about <a href="https://www.livescience.com/animals/dinosaurs/17-billion-tyrannosaurus-rexes-walked-the-earth-before-going-extinct-new-study-estimates" target="_blank" rel="noopener">0.0000002%</a> of the T. rex that lived on Earth.</p>

Marjorie Taylor Greene predicted that identifying as heterosexual will be a thing of the past within a period of less than 200 years thanks to LGBTQ-inclusive sex educators, who she called "trans terrorists."</p><p>"They just want you to think that all of a sudden the entire population is steadily turning gay or turning trans," said the Georgia representative, who <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/georgia-congress-primaries-marjorie-taylor-greene-live-results-2022-5?r=US&amp;IR=T">sailed through her primary race to win the GOP nomination on May 24</a>. </p><p>Greene cited no evidence for the apparently chronic decline of heterosexuality. 86.3% of Americans consider themselves straight, <a href="https://news.gallup.com/poll/389792/lgbt-identification-ticks-up.aspx">according to a 2022 Gallup poll</a>. </p><p><a href="https://news.gallup.com/poll/329708/lgbt-identification-rises-latest-estimate.aspx">Gallup has noted</a> that it is still an open question over whether the generational increases are due to "a true shift in sexual orientation" or whether it "reflects a greater willingness of younger people to identify as LGBT."</p><p>In a video, Greene said: "Just generation, generation ... probably in about four or five generations no-one will be straight any more. Everyone will be either gay, or trans, or nonconforming or whatever list of fifty of sixty options which there are." </p><p>A generation is typically taken to mean around 30 years — making Greene's ballpark around 120 to 150 years.</p><p>A short segment of Greene's speech was shared by the Twitter account Patriot Takes:</p><p>The comments came as part of <a href="https://www.facebook.com/100050893097078/videos/561385618908855">"MTG Live," an almost hour-long video</a> uploaded to Facebook on May 29.</p><p>On Wednesday, after Insider contacted Facebook for comment, a company spokesperson said "the video has now been removed for violating our policies."</p><p>The video had been viewed more than 16,000 times and had been shared more than 500 times. </p><p>In it, Greene targeted Disney and Rachel E. Simon, a psychotherapist who wrote a book titled: "The Every Body Book: The LGBTQ+ Inclusive Guide for Kids about Sex, Gender, Bodies and their Families."</p><p>Greene, showing a brief clip of Simon discussing her book, used this as one basis on which to claim that "the most dangerous people in America" are those that "want to groom your children and talk them into changing their gender."</p><p>"This people are terrorists because they're going after the most innocent, vulnerable people in our country," she said. In the brief clip of Simon talking about her book, there was no mention of attempting to persuade children into gender reassignment. </p><p>Greene also took aim at Disney, which has come under fire from conservatives for LGBTQ-inclusive programming in what has shaped up to be an anti-"woke" culture war. </p><p>She shared a brief clip of <a href="https://www.romper.com/entertainment/dino-ranch-episode-adoption-exclusive">a Disney show named "Dino Ranch"</a> in which two animated male dinosaurs gaze longingly at egg-shaped rocks and appear to want to become fathers.</p><p>The show's creator Matt Fernandes <a href="https://www.romper.com/entertainment/dino-ranch-episode-adoption-exclusive">said in an interview with parenting website Romper.com</a> that his intention was to "have a dialogue about the fact that families come in different shapes and sizes."</p><p>This sort of representation, Greene said, is "sick, it's disgusting, it's evil, and it's wrong."</p><p>She said that she "could care less what grown adults do" and that sexuality is a private matter. </p><p>Greene has a long history of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/marjorie-taylor-greene-transgender-poster-marie-newman-flag-2021-4?r=US&amp;IR=T">transphobic comments and stunts</a>, in particular the false suggestion that transgender people are replacing people assigned female at birth. </p><p>In March, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/marjorie-taylor-greene-rachel-levine-transgender-woman-2022-3?r=US&amp;IR=T">she suggested she feels "threatened" by HHS official Rachel Levine</a>, the highest-ranking openly transgender official in the US.</p><p>Greene's office did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment. </p>

The scooper, spinner, and squirting frog are also all great to help Ellie develop her motor skills. I was a little worried that she would be too young to play with a water table but she loves it, and I know that it will continue to be a fun toy as she moves through toddlerhood. The fact that it captivates her for more than a few minutes is great for me too so I can enjoy my coffee while I watch her play.</p><p>On that note, make sure you're always very closely supervising your children any time they're playing in or near water. According to the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/homeandrecreationalsafety/water-safety/waterinjuries-factsheet.html">CDC</a>, drowning is one of the leading causes of death among children ages 1-4. Drowning can happen quickly and quietly in even small amounts of water. The CDC also offers <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/homeandrecreationalsafety/water-safety/waterinjuries-factsheet.html">tips for how to prevent drowning</a>, including close and undistracted supervision. Keep your kids safe, and they can enjoy hours of fun in and around the water.</p><h2>This water table is versatile</h2><p>One of my favorite things about <a href="http://www.anrdoezrs.net/links/6415797/type/dlg/https://www.kmart.com/step-2-kids-duck-pond-splash-water-table/p-SPM8919577823?sid=KDx20090423x00001" target="_blank" rel="noopener">this water table</a> is that you can use it for so much more than just water play.</p><p>You can get a whole lot of bang for your buck when you think creatively. Instead of just water, you can fill it with sand, Easter eggs, plastic balls, moon sand, snow, beans, rainbow rice, or any other sensory material. You could even put toys or pebbles in with water for your child to scoop out, or add in some muddy cars or trucks and have a "car wash."  </p><p>Of course, make sure you're always using the table safely so make sure what you're using in place of water is safe for your kids, and don't put more weight on the table than it can hold. According to Step2, the table can hold four gallons of water, which is equivalent to around 33 pounds.</p><h2>One con to consider</h2><p>I wish the design of the rubber ducks was a little more thoughtful.</p><p>The two rubber ducks that come with the table have holes in the bottom, which help their buoyancy but also quickly fill up with water. When they have too much water in them, they don't float correctly. This $30 water table provides hours of entertainment for my daughter on hot summer days

<p class="source"><span>Danielle Dufault/Royal Ontario Museum</span></p><p class="caption">Zuul crurivastator, or "Zuul, destroyer of shins."</p><p>When researchers at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) pieced together the fossilized 75-million-year-old bones of the ankylosaurid specimen they acquired last year, they noticed something strange.</p><p>The remarkably well-preserved armored dinosaur - which was a new species - bore an uncanny resemblance to an already existing fictional character: Zuul, from the 1984 film "Ghostbusters."</p><p>The dinosaur and fictional demon both have a "short, rounded snout and prominent horns behind the eyes," according to a <a href="http://www.rom.on.ca/en/about-us/newsroom/press-releases/royal-ontario-museum-identifies-spectacular-new-species-of-armoured">statement from the museum</a>.</p><p>Here's Zuul the dinosaur:</p><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wadNi6mpeKc">Royal Ontario Museum/YouTube</a></span></p><p>And here is Zuul, Gatekeeper of Gozer:</p><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3ns6H5dHrU">Ghostbusters.net/YouTube</a></span></p><p>The newly identified ankylosaurid's full name is Zuul crurivastator, with the species name translating to "destroyer of shins." The dinosaur belongs to a group of armored creatures that had massive, weapon-like clubs for tails. These tails were about 10 feet long and covered in spikes (so able to destroy the shins of any predators willing to take them on).</p><p>The Ontario researchers describe the creature in a new study published in the <a href="http://rsos.royalsocietypublishing.org/content/4/5/161086.article-info">journal</a><a href="http://rsos.royalsocietypublishing.org/content/4/5/161086.article-info"> Royal Society of Open Science</a>.</p><p>All in all, it was about 20 feet long, on par with a white rhinoceros.</p><p class="source"><span>Danielle Dufault/Royal Ontario Museum</span></p><p>The armored herbivore's bones came from the Judith River Formation of Montana.</p><p>"The preservation of the fossil is truly remarkable. Not only is the skeleton almost completely intact, but large parts of the bony armor in the skin are still in its natural position," Dr. David Evans, Temerty Chair and Curator of Vertebrate Palaeontology at the Royal Ontario Museum, and leader of the project, said <a href="http://www.rom.on.ca/en/about-us/newsroom/press-releases/royal-ontario-museum-identifies-spectacular-new-species-of-armoured">in a press release</a>.</p><p>Those well-preserved bones helped confirm that this is indeed a new species.</p><p>"I've been working on ankylosaurs for years, and the spikes running all the way down Zuul's tail were a fantastic surprise to me - like nothing I've ever seen in a North American ankylosaur," <a href="http://www.rom.on.ca/en/about-us/newsroom/press-releases/royal-ontario-museum-identifies-spectacular-new-species-of-armoured">said</a> Dr. Victoria Arbour, the lead author of the study. "It was the size and shape of the tail club and tail spikes, combined with the shape of the horns and ornaments on the skull, that confirmed this skeleton was a new species of ankylosaur."</p><p>It's been a good week for dinosaur discoveries. On May 9, researchers <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/ncomms14952">published a study identifying</a> for the first time a creature that was discovered 20 years ago. It made the cover of <a href="http://news.nationalgeographic.com/2017/05/baby-louie-dinosaurs-giant-eggs-new-species/">National Geographic magazine</a> at that time, but its species didn't get determined until now. That dinosaur, called an oviraptor, resembled an ostrich and was about 25 feet long. It has been officially dubbed <em>Beibeilong sinensis</em>, or "baby dragon from China."</p><p>The "baby dragon" fossils are 90 million years old, so the two newly named dinos were not contemporaries and lived in different locations. Scientists discovered a new 'shin-destroying' armored dinosaur - and named it after Zuul from 'Ghostbusters'

<p>Like most of us, the Smithsonian has always wanted a T.Rex to call its own. Now it's finally getting one, and the museum is not taking any chances when it comes to protection.</p>
<p>Forget FedEx Express, this dinosaur is riding "FedEx Custom Critical" from Montana - where it was found and has been housed at the Museum of the Rockies - to the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. Custom Critical includes around-the-clock tracking, temperature and pressure monitoring, constant surveillance from a remote security command center, and sensors that allow FedEx to see if the packages are being exposed to light or opened.</p>
<p>The truck transporting the giant skeleton will also be followed by a "chase vehicle." We asked if we could track the Dino in real-time, but FedEx spokeswoman Liidia Liuksila told us that the truck's exact location was being kept confidential for security reasons. I wonder how much a T.Rex gets you on the black market.</p>
<p>The monitoring may seem excessive, but the Smithsonian has been hankering for a T.Rex since at least the late 1990s. Back in 1997, the museum had backers ready to offer up a total of $2.5 million dollars to get a T.Rex skeleton named Sue, <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/the-t-rex-that-got-away-smithsonians-quest-for-sue-ends-with-different-dinosaur/2014/04/05/7da9a73c-b9a6-11e3-9a05-c739f29ccb08_story.html">according to the Washington Post</a>. It wasn't enough. Instead, Sue ended up in the hands of The Field Museum Of Natural History in Chicago.</p>
<p>"After the sale of Sue, dinosaur bones were hot," Randall Kremer, a Smithsonian representative who was at the 1997 auction, told the Washington Post.</p>

Rex is called in Montana. The skeleton is on loan to the Smithsonian for the next 50 years.</p>
<p>The dinosaur is currently in its second day of a three-day packaging process into 16 crates, said Liuksila, after which point, it will be on its way east. He will arrive in D.C. on April 15.</p>
<p>The first piece of Big Mike's seven ton, 38-foot-long skeleton was found by a Montana rancher named Kathy Wankle. She found Big Mike's arm bone - the first T. Rex. arm bone ever found - in 1988. Eventually, about 80% of Big Mike's skeleton was found, making him one of the most complete T. Rex specimens yet.</p>
<p>Big Mike is not the only strange cargo to end up in FedEx's care. In the past decade, they have transported parts of the Titanic, 15,000 sea turtle eggs, rescue capsules used in the 2011 Chilean mine rescue, and two pandas, among other things.</p>
