<ul><li>Iconic romantic films including DDLJ, Tamasha, Titanic 3D version and Jab We Met were re-released during Valentine’s week. </li><li>For chains like PVR, reruns have been an important part of their campaign to bring India back to the theatres. </li><li>Analyst Karan Taurani believes reruns are not powerful enough to impact collections or drive theatre occupancy and indicates lack of fresh Bollywood content. </li><li>Indian film critic Sucharita Tyagi states reruns of classics are helping build film communities, drive theatre occupancy and celebrate cinema. </li></ul>Theatre audiences in one of the PVR’s in Punjab were seen dancing to the groovy beats of ‘Mauja hi mauja’, a song from Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan-starrer Jab We Met, rereleased in theatres almost two decades after its original release. Kapoor called it ‘too special’ on Twitter. But is the business of nostalgia strong enough to mint money at the box office? Several iconic romantic films including – Shah Rukh Khan (SRK)-Kajol-starrer Dilwale Dulhania Le Jaayenge (DDLJ), Ranbir Kapoor-Deepika Padukone’s Tamasha, James Cameron’s Titanic in 3D and Jab We Met – were released across PVR, Inox and Cinepolis theatres during Valentine’s week this February. Even though DDLJ remains the longest-running film in Indian cinema and is immensely popular with multiple reruns, it found tough competition this Valentine’s week from the Jab We Met rerun. “Jab We Met has now started beating DDLJ in PVR. Jab We Met collected ₹2 lakh on Friday. The collections then jumped to approximately ₹5 lakh on Saturday while the collections on Sunday were ₹6 lakh. On Monday, while DDLJ collected ₹6 lakh, Jab We Met collected ₹6.5 lakh in the multiplex chain,” reported<a href="https://www.bollywoodhungama.com/news/features/jab-mets-re-release-springs-surprise-collects-monday-sunday-also-beats-dilwale-dulhania-le-jayenge-pvr/"> Bollywood Hungama</a>. Rerun campaigns for boosting footfalls PVR Oberoi Mall in Goregaon, Mumbai decided to play six shows of Jab We Met on Valentine’s day. Tamasha had 150 shows with 50% audience occupancy and Titanic 3D version rerun had 1,000 shows, with 60% occupancy, PVR told Business Insider India. The PVR’S Valentine Week Film Festival (10th-16th February 2023) also re-released other romantic titles across languages – Ticket to Paradise (English), Ved (Marathi), Geetha Govindam (Telugu), Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa (Tamil), Hridayam (Malayalam), Googly (Kannada) and Love Ni Bhavai (Gujarati). “Screened across 25 cities in India, Jab We Met, DDLJ, Tamasha, Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa and Titanic especially received good response, recording average occupancy of 50-70%. Shows of Jab We Met had to be increased to meet the increased demand,” Gautam Dutta, CEO, PVR, told Business Insider India. PVR aims to continue with their rerun campaigns in the future, given the power nostalgia wields on millennials and even GenZs, Dutta added. For chains like PVR, reruns have been an important part of their campaign to boost theatre occupancy – be it re-releasing 11 films starring Amitabh Bachchan on his 80th birthday or the ‘Dilip Kumar Hero of Heroes’ campaign celebrating his 100th birth anniversary. The release of DDLJ during SRK’s birthday last year collected ₹23.4 lakh, claiming 60% occupancy then. “When you watch Jab We Met, you also watch it with 300 people who are die-hard fans of that film. Witnessing this celebration is pure joy. You know the punchlines, where to laugh, where to cry. Props to the Film Federation of India for bringing these classics back. They are also driving theatre occupancy,” Sucharita Tyagi, an Indian film critic told Business Insider India. Many movies like DDLJ, Tamasha, Jab We Met are already available on OTTs yet cinephiles are flocking to theatres in hoards. An Ormax report states the Indian theatre audience has lost <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/indian-film-industry-lost-24-million-moviegoers-to-the-pandemic-ormax/articleshow/97918537.cms">24 million</a> moviegoers to the pandemic. This is accentuated by low impact of small and medium-budget films and availability of OTT platforms. The OTT audience in India has grown 20% in 2022 with 424 million active users. Yet, it looks like the big screen has its pull. “We are seeing films like Deewar in theatres, which was released when we weren’t even born. It is a novelty experience. Reruns boost film communities. The Priyanka Chopra led Jio-MAMI festival is also bringing physical screenings back. It is a good time for cinema I believe,” added Tyagi. Impact on collections: minuscule Reruns may boost film communities, but will they be able to revive flagging footfalls and lift box office collections? Karan Taurani, analyst at Elara Capital, believes reruns are not powerful enough to impact collections or drive theatre occupancy. They are rather indicative of fresh Bollywood content. Also, reruns have limitations in their reach. For instance, a Jab We Met will rake in more numbers in Punjab or Delhi as compared to South Indian cities like Chennai. “Reruns are happening because Pathaan has seen a strong run in the last two and a half weeks. Little to no fresh content is being offered, which is why these films are being re-released. The number of Hindi films released every quarter have come down 25-30%, from over 20 films every quarter pre-pandemic to less than 14 films now. There is greater reliance on big-budget films,” Taurani told Business Insider India. SRK-Deepika Padukone-starrer Pathaan crossed ₹500 crore in India in 20 days, contributing 46% to <a href="https://www.ormaxmedia.com/insights/stories/the-india-box-office-report-january-2023.html?s=08">January’s India box office</a> collections. Films released in January 2023 grossed ₹1,389 crore at the domestic box office, the highest since April 2022, as per <a href="https://www.ormaxmedia.com/insights/stories/the-india-box-office-report-january-2023.html?s=08">Ormax report.</a> A caveat – only six films managed to cross the ₹10 crore mark, indicating greater reliance on big-budget movies like Pathaan. “The impact of reruns is very minuscule. Collection is low because these are consumed more in terms of single screens where ticket prices are low. I don’t foresee a large number of people going to multiplexes for these films as ticket prices are 3-4 times higher,” added Taurani. But Tyagi states these movies are helping India come back to the theatres, although she too wishes the ticket prices of these movies were cheaper. “I cannot say if these movies are being used as fillers before the big releases but I am glad India is coming back to the theatres. I wish the ticket prices and snacks at concession stands were cheaper at theatres to make movie watching a more affordable experience,” added Tyagi. Reruns may not be too successful at raking in the moolah at the box office but what they surely do is revive the currency of nostalgia – allowing the audience to relive the past while providing theatre chains a respite from falling audience footfalls.

However, the actor seems to be as unperturbed as he could be. Yesterday, Shah Rukh Khan held a Twitter QnA session, called <keyword id="3179037" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="asksrk">AskSRK</keyword>, that trended for a good few hours, given the number of followers he has on social media platform. It was during this session of AskSRK that some followers decided to test Khan’s patience. 
 
One follower asked Khan when he would learn acting, hinting at his performances in the last few releases viz. Happy New Year and Chennai Express, as well as <keyword id="1665132" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dilwale">Dilwale</keyword>.

But that’s not really surprising as the <keyword id="1636016" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="rom-com">rom-com</keyword> released on July 11 has all the right masala punched in, including the star cast. Yes, you have <keyword id="6354526" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Alia-Bhatt">Alia Bhatt</keyword> and <keyword id="383666" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Varun-Dhawan">Varun Dhawan</keyword> back here and the chemistry you saw in <keyword id="549195" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="Student-of-the-Year">Student of the Year</keyword> is still sizzling. Riding on hits like 2 States, Highway and Student of the Year, Alia’s Midas touch makes this feisty flick quite adorable while the storyline, a new millennium version of <keyword id="88064" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dilwale-Dulhania-Le-Jayenge">Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge</keyword>, is another sure shot way to win hearts. So here’s another hit as HSKD, produced by <keyword id="3778" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Karan-Johar">Karan Johar</keyword>, netted Rs 33.74 crore at the <keyword id="827271" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Domestic-Box-Office">domestic box office</keyword> in the first three days (trade figure stands at Rs 33.41 crore) and grossed around Rs 5.55 crore overseas in the first weekend. 
 
“HSKD surpasses ALL expectations and has a FANTABULOUS Sunday: Fri 9.02 cr, Sat 11.25 cr, Sun 13.46 cr. Total: Rs 33.74 cr nett. India biz,” tweeted film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh. 
 Monday and Tuesday collections were pegged at Rs 5.60 crore and Rs 5 crore, respectively, as per industry estimates, taking the five-day total at home to around Rs 44 crore. Released in about 2,200 screens, the movie had a comparatively low budget of Rs 29 crore (including cost of production and P&amp;A) and collections at the domestic <keyword id="25892" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="box-office">box office</keyword> are way ahead of the amount. Going by the current trend, HSKD is bound to hit the <keyword id="2368887" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rs-50-crore-mark">Rs 50 crore mark</keyword> in this week, but whether it can enter the coveted Rs <keyword id="6567206" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="100-crore-club">100 crore club</keyword> is yet to be seen. 
 
 
 
But ask us the secret behind Humpty Sharma’s resounding success and we will falter after a couple of points. Yes, there is Alia Bhatt, aka <keyword id="2256596" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kavya-Pratap-Singh">Kavya Pratap Singh</keyword>, playing the spirited Ambala lass and getting her way in everything – be it buying an exuberantly priced <keyword id="170" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Designer">designer</keyword> lehenga for her upcoming shaadi with too-good-to-be-true NRI bridegroom <keyword id="26339" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Angad-Bedi">Angad Bedi</keyword> (<keyword id="31020" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Siddharth-Shukla">Siddharth Shukla</keyword>) or falling in love with the chance acquaintance Rakesh or Humpty (Varun Dhawan), a Delhi lad ready to go all out to claim his sweet<keyword id="24479" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="heart">heart</keyword>. While Alia charms all and looks like a modern-day Simran, Varun seems to be lacking Raj’s confidence and charisma. Still, pitted against the picture perfect Angad, Humpty’s vulnerability easily touches our heart. 
 However, there the pluses end. Rehashing an insanely popular <keyword id="2148473" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood-classic">Bollywood classic</keyword> is no easy task but a total lack of logic, shallow emotions, a ‘sudden’ change of heart and a make-believe climax can hardly support a great love story, even if it’s a millennial love story. It has its moments of warmth and sweetness, but the freshness wanes too soon and <keyword id="303" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Director">director</keyword> Shashank Khaitan leaves the story to meander through painful predictabilities. However, Bollywood buffs are still big-hearted enough to love a love story and that is one of the key reasons why Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania is rocking the box office.

Mark; Will It Be A Superhit?

The task at hand was nearly impossible. Our target, <keyword id="1356429" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kanan-Gill">Kanan Gill</keyword>, one half of the duo behind Pretentious Movie Reviews stood enveloped amidst a herd of his loyal fans who descended almost instantly to take tokens of remembrance in the forms of selfies, autographs and advice from the guy who made them see movies in a completely different way. 
 
Fortunately for us, we somehow managed to break into the fortress and find our way in- close enough to have a chat with the 27-year-old comedian who has revolutionised the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=youtube">Youtube</a> <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=comedy">comedy </a>space along with his partner in crime <keyword id="2024207" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Biswa-Kalyan-Rath">Biswa Kalyan Rath</keyword> and has moved on to improve <keyword id="6359193" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Comedy">comedy</keyword> with the Improvisers ( a comedy collective comprising <keyword id="2482927" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kaneez-Surka">Kaneez Surka</keyword>, Kenny Sebastian, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=abish+mathew">Abish Mathew</a> and him) 
 
Naturally, the first question we pose in front of Gill is the most clichéd one. “Can we expect more of the Pretentious Movie Reviews anytime soon?,” we ask, our faces making no effort to hide the excitement. 
 
“Maybe. Life is long,” he quips. 
 
“Maybe?” we ask almost disappointed. 
 
“Yes, maybe. Maybe we’ll die before that or maybe a meteor will hit us tomorrow.” 
 
When we ask him whether he has been rehearsing his answers, he answers in the negative. “No, no. I’m just very zen in life. What’s the point of hurrying with everything?” 
 
That’s Kanan Gill in a nutshell. He doesn’t worry himself to death and yet he does. He doesn’t mince his words and can be found at his candid best whether on stage or off it and the best part? He never really stops trying to make you laugh. 
 
He had our curiosity. But, after the next answer, he got our attention. 
 
 
 
“When you shoot a video, there are no people, so you basically got to perform to the camera. It’s a very difficult thing to do. And, that’s where most people who start with videos go wrong- like they look very bored and have low energy because there is no else in the room, right? So that’s what both Biswa and I learnt while making our videos- that we have to pretend that the audience is your camera,” he explains, when we ask him what is more difficult- performing live or shooting videos. 
 
“Performing live is much easier- mainly because your audience is right there. There’s no pressure to pretend. Your energy, expressions and mannerisms come almost naturally,” he says. 
 
As an afterthought, he adds that when it comes to dealing with hate, online is a much trickier platform. 
 
“I usually ignore it. For one video, I just turned off the comments because they were like really bad. There are times it really gets to you, so I think it’s best to just avoid them,” advises Kanan. 
 
We try getting the conversation back to how he shot to fame- Pretentious Movie Reviews and ask him which movie has been his favourite to review? 
 
 
 
 
“Gunda was fun if you keep in mind the whole process of actually reviewing it. But, I was the most happy when we reviewed <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=ddlj">Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge</a>.” 
 
And, is there movie he is looking forward to reviewing? 
 “My parents live in Singapore and my sister lives in London, and this December all of them came down to Bangalore and we met. Naturally, I was like ‘Guys let’s watch a movie as a family’ and I took them to watch <keyword id="1665132" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dilwale">Dilwale</keyword> and you can imagine- it ruined our entire vacation. So, I guess I’d start with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=dilwale">Dilwale</a>,” he tells us while laughing. 
 
Explaining why they suddenly stopped reviewing movies, Kanan says, “We shot a couple of reviews but didn’t end up releasing them because we thought they weren’t that funny. Which is why, we took a hiatus because we thought that we had exhausted all our angles.” 
 
Considering he has recently started doing improve comedy, we wonder if there are some parameters he follows to ensure his jokes don’t cross the line of being offensive and quick comes his reply, “This is a thing I’ve worried about more and more over time. When I was just starting out, I used to just go and say anything like horrible, deliberately offensive things just to shock the audience and get a response out of them. But now, when you realise more people are coming to see you, you have to worry about every word you’re about to say.” 
 
 
 
He further adds that he still slips up sometimes and says one or two things he shouldn’t and then instantly regrets them and wonders whether he is going to get into trouble for that. “You never know especially with people filming everything all the time and getting offended at the drop of a hat,” he says. 
 
So, censorship does affect his content then? “Very much” he answers. “I have a video that I shot in January and I absolutely love it. I’ve shown to it all the other comedians and they’ve told me that it’s the funniest shit ever but you know what? I can never put it out because if I did, I’d be butchered. I’m upset about that video every day,” Kanan tells us. 
 
To put things in perspective, he talks of his favourite show South Park. 
 
“The creators of South Park talked about political correctness as a wave. They said that it was big in the 90s and then it went away. But, when they did the latest season, they also talked about how political correctness is becoming a big thing again. So I’m hoping censorship is one of those things that just goes away with time or at least reaches a breaking point.” 
 
Realising our time is almost up, we ask him one last question- Any tips for people who’re just starting out? 
 
He replies matter-of-factly, “You know when you’re sitting around with your friends and trying to make them laugh? Take that experience of being the funny guy in your group on to a much bigger platform- the stage,” he signs off.

It was the #1 film this weekend, higher than 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'. It also had the highest opening for a Bollywood film in 2015 in Britain, Australia and Malaysia. It was SRK’s personal best in Malaysia trade analyst Komal Nahta said. 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Bajirao+Mastani">Bajirao Mastani</a> also saw good footfalls over the weekend according to trade analyst Taran Adarsh. The film reportedly made Rs.12.80 Crores on its opening day.

The two iconic entertainers will collaborate to create films and series to bring defining stories to audiences in India and across the world. The first project to come out of this partnership is the character-driven thriller, The Railway Men, a four-part series starring R Madhavan, Kay Kay Menon, Divyendu Sharma and Babil Khan, which is directed by debutant director Shiv Rawail. The second project is titled Maharaj, which is a film marking the debut of actor Junaid Khan and also stars Jaideep Ahlawat, Sharvari and Shalini Pandey. The film has been directed by Siddharth P Malhotra, whose last film Hichki was a global hit. Also inspired by true events, Maharaj, is an incredible David vs Goliath story set in the 1800s, about how a regular man, journalist by profession, takes on a powerful role-model of society, hailed by many as a messiah for the masses. Other than films, Dharmatic Productions is also working on web series that will be streamed on Prime.

 Shubh Mangal Zyaada Saavdhan is a rare Bollywood gay rom-com where Kartik and Aman fight the stereotypical mindset and small-town homophobia. Ayushman Khurrana wins hearts with Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan — eyes ₹30 crore in 3 days

June is at the fag end and we almost have a mid-year report card of Bollywood. Though the year started on a dismal note, it picked up towards May and June. 
 
This year, January was like a drought month and even movies starring big names did not interest the audience. As Arjun Kapoor and Sonakshi Sinha starrer-'Tevar'- failed to take off, even the Horrex (horror + sex) formula did not work out for ‘Alone’ and ‘Khamoshiyan’. 
 
Other movies that released in January and failed to make a mark included Sonam Kapoor-starrer ‘Dolly Ki Doli’, 'Sharafat Gayi Tel Lene', ‘Crazy Cukkad Family’, ‘Hawaizaada’ among others. 
 
The only respite that the Bollywood lovers got was from Akshay Kumar’s ‘Baby’, which also became the first movie of 2015 to enter the Rs 100 crore club. 
 
But the jinx did not end in January as February continued to bring more bad news for the industry. 
 
The big shocker came in the form of ‘Shamitabh’. The movie, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Dhanush, was directed by R Balki, the maker who has given us movies like Pa and Cheeni Kum. 
 
Later in the month, ‘Roy’ released, which recorded a good start but by weekend the movie fizzled out. Most trade pundits pegged the crucial India-Pakistan match at the World Cup as the reason for the drop of sales on Sunday but the movie could not recover much post this phase also because of negative word of mouth. 
 
Thankfully, later in the same month we had movies like ‘Badlapur’ and ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’. Both managed to gather decent collections at the Box Office. In fact, ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’ was a complete surprise package and managed to pull crowds even in its third week . 
 
March threw a mixed bag as Anushka Sharma starrer 'NH-10' received critical acclaim. April again was a dry month as Bollywood had nothing to offer that could have clicked with the Bolly buffs. 
 
However, Bollywood saw a turnaround in May. It started on a high note with Akshay Kumar starrer ‘Gabbar is Back’, which went to collect Rs 86.55 crore at the Box Office. This was followed by Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan and Irrfan Khan’s 'Piku', which struck a right chord with the audience and collected Rs 111 crore worldwide. 
 
Later in the month, Kangana Ranaut wowed the audience with her spectacular acting in ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’. As per reports, the movie managed to collect Rs 190.87 crore worldwide. Given that the movie was made with Rs 31 crore budget, it stood out and is the most profitable movie of 2015 till date. 
 
But, the disappointment came from ‘Bombay Velvet’. Everybody had high hopes from Ranbir Kapoor’s flick but it fell flat. 
 
The momentum seems to continue with ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ and ‘ABCD 2’. ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ has managed Rs 37.05 crore in the first weekend and is holding the fort well. Also ABCD 2, sequel of ABCD, managed to get the biggest opening for 2015 and continues to do a good business over the week. 
 
The later half will see a slew of big- starrer movies such as Salman Khan starrer ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’, Vikas Bahl of Queen fame’s ‘Shaandaar’, ‘Singh is Bling’ featuring Akshay Kumar, Nikhil Advani’s ‘Katti Batti’, Aishwarya Rai’s comeback movie ‘Jazbaa’ and also ‘Dilwale’ in which fans will see Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol paired together. In addition, there will also be a third installment of ‘Hate Story’, ‘Hera Pheri’ and ‘Kya Kool Hai Hum’ to look forward to. 
 
Commenting on the movie sentiment of 2015, Komal Nahata, Trade Analyst shared, “It has been a good 2015 so far. Sure there were some upsets in the start of the year but May has been extremely kind and the rest of the year looks really promising." 
 
We hope that the forthcoming movies get the cash ringer buzzing for Bollywood and we continue to see some entertaining movies in the latter half of the year.
