In total, India is offering $30 billion in support for semiconductors and related industries. "The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector's robust growth trajectory indicates, major industry players looking to address the needs of this customer base have also found the opportunity to be global suppliers, supported by the government's thrust on conducive policy and enabling infrastructure," said P Ramakrishna, CEO, India Mobile Congress.

Lauding the fintechs for democratising <keyword id="19976433" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="financial-services" source="keywords">financial services</keyword>, Modi said the sector, which has attracted USD 31-billion investment in the last 10 years, has played a key role in denting the parallel economy. The Prime Minister was addressing the Global Fintech Fest (GFF) 2024, jointly organised by the Payments Council of India, the National Payments Corporation of India and the Fintech Convergence Council. He said the domestic economy and the capital market are in a celebratory mood at a time when the nation is also going through a festive period. Modi underlined that the government is making all necessary changes on the policy level to assist the fintech sector and gave examples of doing away with Angel Tax, allocating Rs 1 lakh crore to encourage research and innovation in the country and implementing the Digital Personal Data Protection Act. Modi further said the trinity of Jan Dhan, Aadhaar and Mobile have broken down the mentality of 'Cash is King' and made way for approximately half of the <keyword id="20004116" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="digital-transactions" source="keywords">digital transactions</keyword> in the world taking place in India. "India's <keyword id="19900911" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="upi" source="keywords">UPI</keyword> has become a major example of fintech in the world," he said, adding that it has enabled 24X7 banking services in every village and city in all weather conditions. Underlining the role of fintech in democratising financial services, the Prime Minister gave examples of readily available loans, credit cards, investments and insurance. He said that fintech has made access to credit easy and inclusive, and gave the example of PM SVANidhi scheme that has enabled street vendors to avail collateral-free loans and further expand their business with the help of digital transactions. "Sustainable <keyword id="19900794" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="economic-growth" source="keywords">economic growth</keyword> is India's priority today," he said and emphasised that the government is creating robust, transparent and efficient systems to strengthen financial markets with advanced technologies and regulatory frameworks. Removed Angel Tax, taking policy measures to promote fintech sector: PM Modi

The announcement was made at Fuel For India 2021 -- <keyword id="399907" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="meta" source="Orion">Meta</keyword>'s annual event in India, that showcases positive impact and socio-economic transformation delivered by its family of apps. The programme aims to cause a behavioural transformation to digital payments at the grassroots, the company said. "At WhatsApp we are committed to help accelerate financial inclusion in the country. We have started this pilot programme in 500 villages across Karnataka and Maharashtra as part of our mission to onboard the next 500 million to the digital payments ecosystem," said Abhijit Bose, Head of India, WhatsApp, in a statement. "We believe that WhatsApp's ease of use and reliability can promote the adoption of UPI with users across, including those at the bottom of the pyramid. We will continue to contribute meaningfully in this journey of educating users at the grassroots, so they can trust digital payments, as they gradually make the transition from a 'cash-only' way of financial life," Bose added. The pilot called 'Digital Payments Utsav', began on October 15 in Kyathanahalli village in Mandya district of Karnataka, where villagers were familiarised with various aspects of digital payments including signing up for UPI, setting up a UPI account and safety best practices of using digital payments. The initial results from the pilot programme showed villagers adopting 'payments on WhatsApp' as new mode of payments. From village-grocery store to the beauty-parlour and scores of other people and small and medium businesses are now accepting and receiving payments digitally using 'payments on WhatsApp', the company said. "People sometimes don't want to come all the way to the shop, instead, they just give me their list and location on WhatsApp and I deliver orders to them. I can also receive payments from them on WhatsApp," said Anil K.R, a poultry shop owner at Kyathanahalli. Further, to push digital access, WhatsApp recently also placed the rupee symbol in its chat-composer. In addition, WhatsApp has equipped its main camera to scan QR codes, adding another layer of convenience for users of payments on WhatsApp, to enable access to 20 million QR-accepting stores in the country. The company said it will continue to make significant investments in 'payments on WhatsApp' over the next six months, in order to accelerate its growth across India. WhatsApp 'adopts' 500 villages as it seeks to boost its UPI user base

A general perception is that most of the rural population is not well-versed in digital banking in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>. However, in what can be termed as a revelation, according to a pan-India "Financial Literacy and Inclusion survey" conducted by the <keyword id="6354335" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india" source="Orion">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> (<keyword id="30067" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="rbi" source="Orion">RBI</keyword>), digital banking awareness and knowledge among the rural and urban population across the country is at par with each other, with the average being 11.7 for both segments on a score of 21. The survey was based on three parameters namely, financial knowledge, attitude and behaviour. On a total score of 21, the average urban and rural scores were 11.7. Zone-wise, the scores were as follows: In the north zone, the scores in urban and rural areas were at par at 11.5 each. Similarly in the east zone too, the scores were 12.1 for both rural and urban areas. In the central zone, the score for urban areas was 12.5 and for rural areas, it was marginally less at 12.1. The West zone also showed neck-to-neck scores with urban areas recording 12.6 and rural areas showing 12.5. In the south zone, the urban area score was 11.2 while the rural area score stood at 10.3. With both urban and rural areas not showing much of a difference across the country according to the RBI survey, it indicates that in terms of awareness about digital banking, a lot needs to be done to improve knowledge across all strata of society. We saw <a href="https://www.snopes.com/news/2022/01/12/edward-ryan-harvard/">many examples</a> of copypasta circulate online during the COVID-19 pandemic and have fact-checked social media posts in the wake of the Russian invasion, such as this "<a href="https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/why-does-ukraine-matter/">Why Ukraine Matters</a>" Facebook post (which contained some claims that were true and others that were false or misleading.).Examples of <a href="https://www.snopes.com/collections/copypasta/">evergreen, effective copypasta</a> fact-checked by Snopes years ago continue to pop up in our inbox daily. Simply put, a troll is an online user that posts inflammatory, insincere, digressive, extraneous, or emotion-evoking content as a means to incite social media discourse. Trolls intentionally start arguments or engage in hostile discourse online to further stoke controversial digital fires. Troll bait is their fuel. Troll bait refers to posts, pictures, or graphs that are meant to draw a strong reaction, almost always negative, to drive traffic to their site by way of pushing people to share the original content either in support or opposition. At Snopes, we've seen our fair share of troll bait from the beginning of the Ukrainian invasion, when one viral hoax <a href="https://www.snopes.com/news/2022/02/24/ukraine-american-journalist/?collection-id=396690">falsely claimed</a> that "American journalists" were killed on the first day of the conflict. Another showed a doctored image of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy <a href="https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/zelenskyy-swastika-jersey/?collection-id=396690">holding a swastika sports jersey</a>. New Delhi, Feb 11 () Facebook on Tuesday launched its 'We Think Digital' programme, under which the social media giant will provide digital literacy training to 1 lakh women across seven states, including Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Bihar. "In partnership with National Commission for Women (NCW) and Cyber Peace Foundation, the program aims to provide digital literacy training to one lakh women across seven states through the year," a statement said. The programme will start with the state of Uttar Pradesh and expand to other states including Assam, West Bengal Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Jharkhand and Bihar, it added. We Think Digital, Facebook's global digital literacy programme, was announced in 2019 during the second edition of its South Asia Safety Summit. The training program has been designed with a focus on digital literacy and citizenship, addressing issues around privacy, safety, and misinformation. "We believe that women should have equal access to economic opportunities, education and social connection that the internet provides. Working closely with experts from across different walks of life, we are constantly innovating and designing activities that will enable digital learning and change in the community," Facebook India Director of Public Policy Ankhi Das said.
