It also owns Slack, a popular communication platform.The company is expanding the availability and capabilities of its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/salesforce-ceo-marc-benioff-says-new-focus-on-ai-agents-2024-9">AI agents with Agentforce</a>, a platform that helps Salesforce clients build and deploy agents to automate tasks such as generating written reports from sales data and creating summaries of conversations in Slack.<h2 id="68b90c5d-18fe-403b-bd1d-9eb93eab0695">Situation analysis: What problem were they trying to solve?</h2>AI agents aren't new to Salesforce. In 2016, the company <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/more-details-about-salesforce-einstein-2016-9">released Einstein</a>, an AI service for its CRM software. Einstein handled some of the tasks Agentforce can tackle, but the actions it could take were more scripted.With the arrival and rapid progress of generative-AI models, Salesforce saw an opportunity to improve agents' decision-making and understanding of natural language inputs, like email.That initially led to Einstein GPT, a generative-AI overhaul of Einstein. Then it evolved into Einstein Copilot, announced in early 2024. Now it's called Agentforce, which offers prebuilt and customizable agents."We had to recognize that our customers want to either extend the agents that we ship or they want to build their own customer agents," Tyler Carlson, Salesforce's vice president of business development, told Business Insider.<h2 id="2ba2ccfb-6dbf-46ab-848b-5578f676962f">Key staff and partners</h2>Agentforce's core technology, which Salesforce calls the Atlas Reasoning Engine, was developed by the company's engineering team. Salesforce also allows its clients to access AI models from third-party technology partners including OpenAI, Anthropic, Amazon, and Google.Salesforce has worked with internal and external partners to showcase its AI agents. The company uses Slack to spotlight AI agents that can be accessed directly from the communication platform. (Currently, Agentforce's integration in Slack is in beta.)"The reason Slack is interesting for these employee-facing agents is that it surfaces these automations and capabilities to users where they're spending their time," Carlson said.<div type="image" title="Tyler Carlson headshot" height="640" width="640" msid="115192386" hostid="261" sizebytes="19750"></div><h2 id="5811f14e-6416-45e5-8f7e-d703b210910b">AI in action</h2>Salesforce says the Atlas Reasoning Engine uses what's known as <a target="_blank" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2210.03629">ReAct prompting</a> to help agents reason through problems.ReAct helps an AI agent powered by a large language model break down a problem into its components and then provide steps to solve it. After each action, the AI agent evaluates the result to judge whether it has satisfied the user's prompt. If not, the agent loops through different reasoning and action steps until it reaches a satisfactory result.Salesforce says this can lead to fully autonomous agents that offer personalized support based on a user's specific inquiry and take action — like scheduling an appointment or meeting — without human intervention.The concept is similar to OpenAI's new o1 model, which uses the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sam-altman-openai-new-o1-model-capabilities-agi-2024-9">chain-of-thought prompting technique</a> to work through prompts step-by-step.The Atlas Reasoning Engine is proprietary technology built by Salesforce, and it has access to the company's internally developed LLMs. But it's also designed to work with LLMs provided by partners — the company expects many agents will take advantage of that capability."This is what I find most interesting about agentic systems," Carlson said. "They're not monolithic. They're not a single LLM."Allowing access to third-party LLMs can be risky because it means <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cyber-insurance-coverage-plan-benefits-costs">passing data to an outside vendor</a>. To address this, Salesforce instituted a policy that prohibits data retention. It also provides safeguards designed to identify and reject inappropriate responses to prompts.Salesforce's clients can also use a tool called Agentbuilder to create and deploy custom Agentforce agents that can act on triggers, such as receiving an email or making a sale, without a direct prompt from a company's employees. An automated agent might open messages from a general email inbox and forward them to specific departments based on the agent's understanding of the message's intent.Agentforce also uses <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/retrieval-augmented-generation-making-ai-language-models-better-2024-5">retrieval-augmented generation</a> to create agents that can answer questions based on a company's internal documents and private data. For example, this year Salesforce and Workday created an "AI employee service agent" designed to answer employee questions about a company's HR policies.<h2 id="31002808-8cdf-4bbd-a666-7e22bd1e3fdb">Did it work, and how did they know?</h2>Carlson said Salesforce measured the success of its software by the success of its clients, adding that the results so far had been positive. "That includes promising statistics, like seeing 90% of customer inquiries resolved by an agent," he said.Salesforce will also judge its success by Agentforce's adoption as a platform. The company wants to see clients broadly adopt AI agents designed with Agentbuilder and deploy them within their CRM systems and in Slack. It also wants to see the new AI agents take on larger caseloads and resolve interactions to satisfy clients and customers."By next year I want to see a larger and more open ecosystem of partners," Carlson said. "I want Agentforce to have thousands upon thousands of agent skills, topics, and a lot more that our customers can take advantage of."

Salesforce's new AI platform lets companies build their own digital agents to automate tasks

The company's <keyword id="19913114" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="initial-public-offering" source="keywords">initial public offering</keyword> (<keyword id="19898327" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IPO" source="keywords">IPO</keyword>) comprises a fresh issue of equity shares worth Rs 1,284.50 crore and an Offer for Sale (OFS) of shares valued Rs 1,315.50 crore by promoters and other shareholders, according to the draft red herring prospectus (DRHP). Proceeds from the fresh capital to the tune of Rs 387.44 crore will be used for setting up new processing centres with automation and new fulfilment centres, Rs 73.71 crore for computers and IT equipment, Rs 239.23 crore for enhancing technology, data science capabilities, and cloud infrastructure, and Rs 87.92 crore for payment of debt. Also, the remaining funds will be used for general corporate purposes and potential acquisitions, according to the draft papers filed on Wednesday. The company may consider raising Rs 257 crore through a pre-IPO placement. If such placement is undertaken, the amount raised will be deducted from the total fresh issue size. Ecom Express operates a pan-India express logistics network that handles first-mile pick-up, mid-mile transportation, last-mile delivery, returns, and warehousing services. By offering essential logistics infrastructure and using technology, the company connect digital retailers and <keyword id="19990771" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="e-commerce" source="keywords">e-commerce</keyword> platforms with consumers across the country. Artisans crafted baskets and maps, and the structure's communal space was home to gatherings and restaurants. The people who worked in the building — some of whom were enslaved — likely lived there."We've got a lot of businesses operating in the same space," Allison Emmerson, an archeologist and associate professor at Tulane University, told Business Insider. "While we're digging this up, we're thinking about the lives of the lower classes of Pompeii — not just at the time of the eruption but throughout the city's history."Emmerson leads the multidisciplinary, international team excavating this building. She's the director of the <a target="_blank" href="https://sites.google.com/view/tulaneatpompeii">Pompeii I.14 Project</a>, a collaboration between the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, Tulane University, Oxford University, and Indiana State University that started in 2021. The project's focus is a city block, Insula 14, on the southeastern side of Pompeii. While the process of creating digital twins can differ, these computerized 3D replicas can give researchers a more dynamic look at what they're studying, enable greater <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/antikythera-mechanism-mystery-gravitational-waves-calendar-2024-7">collaboration</a>, and facilitate a remarkable level of preservation.<h2>Building a digital twin</h2>The <a target="_blank" href="https://sites.google.com/view/tulaneatpompeii/interactive-multimedia?authuser=0">Pompeii digital twin</a>, which combines geospatial technology with a rich repository of data collected at the site, lets researchers examine the area from their universities, collaborate remotely with other researchers, and visualize how it has changed over time."Having the digital twin makes it an entirely new ball game," Emmerson said. "It really allows us to go back as if we're in the excavation."Alex Badillo, an assistant professor at Indiana State University, is the Pompeii project's head of digital data initiatives. Unlike static 3D models, <a target="_blank" href="https://amses-journal.springeropen.com/articles/10.1186/s40323-020-00147-4">digital twins</a> include an evolving set of data and the means to update and adjust the model based on new information.To get this information, Badillo implemented a digital workflow at the dig site. The Pompeii site team used iPad Pro tablets to record data, take photos, 3D scan, and digitally sketch their findings. That information is saved in custom digital forms on the iPad and sent to cloud storage when the researcher has access to WiFi or a cell network. From there, it's added to an online dashboard used by the entire team."If someone is digging in the trench and they're wondering what was analyzed from the deposit yesterday, they can go to the iPad they have in the field and pull up all of that information," Emmerson said.Badillo told BI that the information gathered on the iPad — data like structure measurements, soil characteristics, and artifacts found — is added to the 3D model. Together, these components make the digital twin, which archeologists can use to revisit, explore, and analyze the site. After the 3D model is complete, Badillo and his team will continue this workflow at the next dig."You can move through the web scene, and if forms have been filled out for that location, you can click to get extremely detailed information," Badillo said. "Being able to look level by level, make measurements — it's all been a game changer."<h2>Benefits of digital twins</h2>One of the major advantages of digital twins is the ability to examine site elements exactly as they appeared during the initial excavation.Giles Spence Morrow, a research fellow at Vanderbilt University and an assistant professor at McMaster University, began a digital-twin project in 2011 focused on Huaca Colorada, a ceremonial mound built and occupied between AD 650 and 1,000 in Peru.Like Badillo, Morrow uses photogrammetry to create the site's digital twin. Wernke's research is also based in Peru and centers on Mawchu Llacta, an Andean colonial town built in the 1570s. Wernke has also combined 3D imagery with archeological information gathered at his research site to make a digital twin.Through their collaboration, Morrow and Wernke are investigating how digital twins can be augmented through immersive virtual reality. Morrow said they used VR headsets to view their digital twins from a first-person perspective, something that's possible only with strong <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/5g-advanced-standalone-6g-qualcomm-huawei-mwc-2024-3">internet connectivity</a>.Wernke said that exploring digital twins through virtual reality was "as close as we can come to reproducing the feeling or experience" of being at their field sites. When Morrow and Wernke use VR headsets to examine their digital twins, they can leave notes, markups, and maps within the VR scene."The value of this kind of detailed 3D, immersive documentation is hard to overstate, because excavation is an inherently destructive process," Morrow said.The unavoidable destruction of an excavation site is partly why Jamie Hodgkins, an associate professor at the University of Colorado, Denver, and her team were interested in creating a digital twin of a burial site within an Italian cave. They <a target="_blank" href="https://today.ucsd.edu/story/uc-san-diego-researchers-take-a-digital-snapshot-of-an-ancient-infant-burial-site">digitally re-created</a> the oldest documented European burial of an infant female, a child who died nearly 10,000 years ago. The interactive 3D model preserves the burial as they found it.The team took dozens of photos of each delicate skeleton piece as it was discovered. "By the end, we had thousands of images of all the skeleton pieces," Caley Orr, an associate professor at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus who coauthored the study, told BI."This let us reconstruct the burial digitally and see in 3D how it was laid out underground," Orr said. "But we never saw it that way in real life because it revealed itself as we went through each layer of dirt."<h2>Expanding the field</h2>Hodgkins told BI that digital twins could become more common in archeology. While they're valuable to working archeologists now, she said that part of what makes them so useful is how they could benefit the field over time.Hodgkins said past archeological research lacked documentation of spatial relationships between <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-archaeological-mysteries-ancient-artifacts-hikers-discoveries-melting-glaciers-alps-2024-7">artifacts</a>. Without that information, she added, it can be difficult to understand how artifacts, remains, and other discoveries relate to each other.Digital twins could help bridge this gap and give researchers a way to look at field sites just as they found them. "You can never put an artifact back," Hodgkins said. "But if an archeologist 50 years from now wants to ask a question that we didn't think of, they can look at what we have, see the excavation as it was happening, and consider these spatial relationships."Hodgkins is also part of a multiproject, transcontinental <a target="_blank" href="https://jamiehodgkins.wixsite.com/mysite/homer">research consortium</a> that aims to teach students how to collect site data to create digital twins. She said that if more people knew this technique, sites could be compared globally."What we want is to train future archeologists," Hodgkins said. "We won't really understand how humans were <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ancient-stone-tools-first-humans-north-america-2024-5">moving across the planet</a>, how they were interacting with each other, and how the environment was affecting them unless we can compare data across sites.""Digital twins can help us answer the big questions," she added. "But you can't create them if you don't collect the right kind of data."
