Morgan StanleyJeff McMillan is the chief analytics and technology officer for Morgan Stanley's wealth management division.<ul class="summary-list"><li>Companies are investing heavily in digital overhauls, and it's critical that tech chiefs are able to properly calculate the return on investment to ensure funding continues. </li><li>The outcomes, however, can go beyond just financial returns. But a key challenge for organizations is increasingly <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/deloittes-tech-chief-on-why-cto-cfo-relationship-key-2020-2019-12">how to fund those projects</a> and, more importantly, the return on investment. It's becoming more common, for example, for top management to give tech chiefs unallocated pools of money to pursue projects independently without having to return to the enterprise each time for funding. But that creates the mandate for chief data officers and other tech leaders to figure out the impact of those initiatives to ensure the investments remain ongoing. It's one of the main jobs for Morgan Stanley's Jeff McMillan. As chief data and analytics officer for the bank's $17 billion wealth management division, his team is tasked with calculating the returns on the 50-60 initiatives it has ongoing at any time - along with the impact of the slew of data projects that other departments are running on their own. "Not everything that we've done over the last five years works great," he told Business Insider. "We tested something. It didn't work. It didn't prove to be effective. Now, let's do that better next time. And that's the process that we're focused on and the outcomes will take care of themselves over time."For McMillan, the key is thinking about analyzing results before an initiative goes live. That, along with the realization that investment return on digital projects can go beyond just financial gain, is another example of how the role of tech chiefs is changing."You have to start the process with the measurement, you can't end the process with it," he said. If you come to the tech chief after "and say 'how did it go?' The cat is already out of the bag. I can't really help you because you've probably tainted your approach." At Morgan Stanley, McMillan views his job <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-morgan-stanley-tech-chief-wants-his-team-to-shrink-2019-12">as a decision support function</a> to help empower the 25,000 employees to use data to improve how the legal and compliance department pinpoints potential fraud, or how financial advisors make recommendations to clients.That's why it's so critical for McMillan and his team to adequately determine the impact of projects, so they can advise others on the most effective approaches. McMillan explained how the wealth management division laid the groundwork to properly quantify return on investment - and the steps he takes to figure it out.<h2>Understanding the touch points</h2>One area where McMillan spent ample energy was ensuring that his team and others has access to the data for all projects.Say financial advisors are trying to market clients on a new service. It's not enough to compare the final enrollment figures against another campaign, McMillan said.To properly analyze return, McMillan and his team need to look at who the service was advertised to, whether the customers actually received the marketing materials, and which clients called their advisors about it. "We spent an enormous amount of time architecting our system so all those touch points are understood. And that took years," he said.It's also key for McMillan that project leads come to his department early in the process. If Morgan Stanley is hosting an event with clients in San Diego, for example, he urges advisors to think about whether the goal is to raise awareness, sell a product, or another outcome.<h2>Primary vs. secondary results</h2>McMillan thinks about outcomes in two buckets: primary and secondary results.Primary results are often easier to calculate, like did the client apply for the advertised service. But secondary impact - or whether there was a positive behavioral change - is more difficult to determine.For every client project, McMillan creates three "look-a-like clients" that act as a control group. Those test cases make it easier for McMillan and the team to figure out whether there was any adjustment in how the client interacts with their Morgan Stanley advisor or other behavioral changes."Sometimes it's absurdly clear, sometimes it's clear that it works. Sometimes it's clear that it didn't. And sometimes it's ambiguous in the middle," he said.That's why it's important for McMillan to get involved early, so those test groups can be established and his team can work with the other departments to figure out the best metrics to weigh success or failure.To help with those relationships, McMillan also created a "business analytics manager" position that effectively acts as a conduit between his team and other units. The business analytics manager engages with other teams early-on in the process to inform McMillan's team of upcoming projects. How to know if your company's digital initiatives are on the path to success

<ul><li>Once they cross the transformation threshold, automation will become increasingly essential to chief information officers’ quest for higher efficiency at lower costs. </li><li>Gartner’s report predicts that by 2025, 95% of all <keyword id="2723800" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="digital-initiatives" source="Orion">digital initiatives</keyword> will be on cloud-native platforms. </li><li>The next big leverage for automation by 2025 will be its use in <keyword id="137092" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cyber-security" source="Orion">cyber security</keyword>.</li></ul> Automation, while being much maligned in B2C sectors, is fast becoming the Holy Grail of B2B enterprise technology adoption. The immediate reason is the rapid digitization that almost all verticals underwent in the last two years, which accelerated their earlier plans of digital transformation – primarily fueled by artificial intelligence (AI), automation, the <keyword id="11929101" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cloud" source="Orion">cloud</keyword>, and machine learning (ML). However, in this endeavour, as a first step, enterprises would see only a base level of automation adoption. Once they cross the transformation threshold, automation will become increasingly essential to chief information officers’ (CIOs) quest for higher efficiency at lower costs. Historically, its adoption was focused on operations and production (or manufacturing) teams. The DataOps, DevOps and CloudOps teams were the early adopters of automation to deliver on efficiency and agility, not to mention accuracy. For the next few years, the adoption of <keyword id="7114389" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cloud-platforms" source="Orion">cloud platforms</keyword> will increase manifold, to enable successful digital transformation. Gartner’s Top Strategic Technology Trends for 2022: Cloud-Native Platforms report predicts that by 2025, 95 % of all digital initiatives will be on cloud-native platforms. The number will have more than doubled from 2021 (40%). This increase will be fueled by advanced IT automation solutions that will help to orchestrate and control their workloads. While this adoption increases, the next step for automation is Service Orchestration And Automation Platform (SOAP), which will take the lead in offering numerous advantages over the current workload automation solutions. SOAP will deliver the ability to automate real-time business models in the cloud, assuring business-focused digital agility and innovation. Gartner’s report predicts that these advantages will drive 80% of workload automation users to SOAP in the next 2 years. Over the next two to three years, IT tasks and jobs will also become increasingly automated, and business end-users will have to empower self-service capabilities. The next big leverage for automation by 2025 will be its use in cyber security. Hybrid work practices have pushed security risks into homes and distributed geographies. The solution over the next year would be a cybersecurity mesh - designed to reduce the financial impact of a cyber incident drastically by establishing boundaries around individual devices, instead of the network. Automation will play a critical role in this cyber-security strategy since it is impossible to establish manual security boundaries on devices. Data is the basis of all digitization, but raw data is of no value to any process. With increasing data and increasingly more complex data analytics, the ability to analyse it and convert it into actionable insights cannot be a manual process. Complex data pipelines will need resilient automation platforms to serve as what has been referred to as, meta-orchestrator automation platforms. The trend for the adoption of automation platforms for the next five years points directly to one thing- its ability to handle complex IT systems and managing the complete IT workflow from a single, centralised platform with a unified view. Beyond this, it will be hyper-automation – the ability of automation platforms to handle several disparate automation platforms that address complexities in various IT processes of the enterprise, or one ‘Boss Platform’ to rule all. A peek into the next level of automation

<keyword id="176127" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Intel-India">Intel India</keyword> on Friday launched a slew of initiatives to encourage the use of technology in the country's education ecosystem.<o:p></o:p>

	The company said it is collaborating with leading device manufacturers, education digital content and publishers and education solution providers to build end-to-end solutions that promote digital literacy in non-urban India, upskill citizens in tier II cities and beyond, and encourage local innovation.<o:p></o:p>

	The company e-launched its latest 'Unnati Kendra at Common Service Centre' in Karnal, Haryana recently. The company's looking to have 100 such facilities across ten states this year. These centres will conduct sessions on digital literacy, computer skills and internet facilities, and guidance sessions in entrepreneurship, language and vocational training.<o:p></o:p>

	The company has also launched an online portal to upskill village level entrepreneurs at CSCs.

Novant Health is doubling down on its digital health initiatives

<ul><li>India is moving towards digitizing classroom learning across the country </li><li>The initiative will come into implementation from next academic session — 2019-2020. </li><li>It will focus on several domains including technology, mathematics, science and engineering. </li></ul>In line with its ‘Digital India’ development agenda, the Indian government is reportedly planning to invest heavily in modernising classrooms in India. On Wednesday, the Indian government <a href="https://www.livemint.com/news/india/centre-launches-9-000-crore-plan-to-digitize-education-delivery-1550683075713.html">launched</a> an initiative to bring digital boards as part of a broader digital initiative, promising an investment of ₹90 billion in state-run schools and colleges. Starting next academic year — 2019- 2020 — the initiative will be implemented over three years and cover over 150,000 schools for classes 9th to 12th and “thousands of colleges” across the country, India’s Human Resource Minister Prakash Javedekar reportedly said. "Some 60-70 years back there was an 'Operation Blackboard' because that was the need of the hour then. But the country has progressed over the years, and now we need an Operation Digital Blackboard," IANS reported citing Prakash Javadekar. Its use will initially extend to subjects including focus on technology, mathematics, engineering and science. Overall, the move is aimed at making learning more interactive. Digital boards have been successfully used by many business schools. With analytics emerging as the hottest sector under technology, the initiative will include domains such as machine learning, analytics and artificial intelligence. The overall cost will be shared by both states and centre in a 60:40 ratio, with the centre spending most on the initiative. However, the expenses on colleges and schools will be funded by University Grants Commission (UGC) through loans, <a href="http://education-delivery-1550683075713.html">said</a> the Livemint report. Last year, the ministry had formed a committee under Professor Ashok Jhunjhunwala of IIT Madras to look into the need of digital blackboards in schools/colleges. (With IANS)

From blackboards to digital boards: India infuses ₹90 billion to modernise classrooms

Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Indian government is preparing to launch its ‘Digital India’ initiative on a large scale, which will also include selling merchandise, hackathons and games. 
 
Launch of Digital India, an initiative to take technology to the villages and block-levels, will be spread over a week across the country. 
 
No dates have been fixed so far but the Digital India Week (DIW) is likely to kick-start in July. It will involve stakeholders across state governments and ministries. This is likely to be one of the flagship programmes of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). 
 
Economic Times reported that the National e-Governance Division (NeGD), under the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY), has roped in agencies for a messaging campaign, gamification, printing and merchandise, advertising and creatives, including advertising for rural outreach and social media. 
 
The NeGD will work directly with Prime Minister's Office and it is tasked with preparing the launch since February. 
 
"They really want to make this the biggest programme of the second year. The idea is that many things have been done in the digital space that need to get highlighted," an individual with knowledge of the plans told ET. 
 
The event is going to be on a large scale as the government has asked for merchandise such as t-shirts, caps, trophies, pen drives and plastic bags. ET learnt that a gamification agency will work on the portals, mobile applications and social media handles to boost participation. 
 
The messaging agency’s task will be to carry out, track, record and analyse 50 lakh to one crore messages per day. 
 
The event will be launched by Modi through his monthly radio address, "Mann ki Baat". 
 
"It is a typical BJP-style campaign. The Prime Minister does not want to hold the final day event in Delhi and the location is being finalised. All state and line ministries have been involved, and are being asked to showcase e-services and best practices, along with the launch of some programmes like digital locker," another person familiar with the plans being rolled out for the DIW told ET. 
 
The campaign will be known as "inform, educate and engage", which will include taking the message of Digital India to the masses through educational institutions, industry and government agencies. 
 
"It will educate people on various important services such as digital literacy, cyber hygiene and e-waste management, and also look at engaging a large number of people, especially youth on a continuous basis," a person familiar with the ongoing preparation told the financial daily. 
 
Experts on e-governance termed the campaign as a good move since most of the e-governance projects, across the world, fail because there's not enough buy-in from stakeholders or the goals aren't communicated widely to the public. 
 
"E-governance needs evangelising. That is what this campaign looks like it will do. Some parts are dated - such as posters and the print elements. But this is a good idea. Whether it works or not depends on the participation they see at the end," Sunil Abraham, director at the Centre for Internet and Society, told ET.

This July, be prepared for an extravagant Digital India launch

As reported by The Economic Times, the state is all set to introduce 376 government services under the banner. Surprisingly, the count of services is four times more than BJP-ruled Maharashtra, where the number is limited to 85. This is the highest count in the country as of now. 
 <keyword id="2637574" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rathan-U-Kelkar">Rathan U Kelkar</keyword>, CEO of <keyword id="6354780" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Karnataka">Karnataka</keyword>’s <keyword id="1391650" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Centre-for-E-Governance">Centre for E-Governance</keyword>, told ET, "Other states have started earlier, but we feel we are in line with the requirements of Digital India as many of our departments are already ready with a lot of these services. We are integrating all of them on the e-district platform and with this; we will be number one in e-services in the country." 
 
The services in the e-District program will take account of services related to revenue department, motor vehicles department, education, police, forest, industries, Backward Classes department, registration of vehicles and land, among others. 
 
To avail the services, all that a native of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Karnataka">Karnataka </a>would have to do is visit a citizen service centre like the one in Banglore or Atal Janasnehi Kendra and provide a few relevant documents. The franchisee running the centre will do the rest of the required documentation and will sent it across to the concerned department via Internet. 
 
Kelkar informed, "We will have about 5,000 such centers in the state, almost one for each gram panchayat. The citizen will ask for his requirement, the franchise will upload all documents and send it. The concerned department will process it and an SMS will go to the citizen after a few days saying your document is ready and you can go to the centre. It will be digitally signed and handed over to him." 
 
In addition to this, the state is looking to cover 1,200 services in the next stage of this project. "For this, we have to sit with the departments, understand their back-end processes and figure out how best we can onboard all of these 1,200 services that we have listed," he added.

Prasad also added that the demand of electronic hardware is expected to rise rapidly to $ 400 billion by 2020 giving India the potential to become an electronic manufacturing hub. 
 
Additionally, he explained that the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=narendra+modi">Narendra Modi</a> government attaches utmost priority to promote the manufacturing of electronics in the country, which is also a sacrosanct pillar of the Digital India initiative. 
 
He concluded his speech by announcing that the target is to achieve net zero imports by 2020 by creating a level playing field and providing an apt environment for the industry. He added that a robust policy system and a friendly government are already in place in the country and appealed to investors to invest in the country.

Some have compared the frozen ether to cash locked in bank vault no key in sight.</div></div></div><ul><li>Last week, a mistake by a novice hacker led to customers of Parity being unable to access the ether they had stored in their digital wallets. </li><li>Initially, some researchers estimated that as much as $280 million worth of ether could be locked up. </li><li>Parity now say that the official amount that's frozen is worth around $162 million.</li><li>The company is considering a technique that would essentially unwind the Ethereum blockchain to unfreeze the wallets.</li></ul> A novice hacker's goof that last week locked some consumers out of being able to access their stores of ether, a cryptocurrency, wasn't as bad as initially feared. Some 587 digital wallets have been frozen since November 6 when an unidentified user accidentally deleted the code library required to use recently-created wallets within Parity Technologies, a popular provider of them.An official audit by Parity found exactly 513,774.16 ether was frozen as a result of the deleted code, the company said Monday. That amount of ether was worth around $162 million at press time. Some 573 wallet holders were affected by the frozen cryptocurrency. That may not sound good, but researchers <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ethereum-parity-wallet-hack-freeze-missing-code-2017-11">initially estimated</a> the problem was much worse, potentially affecting as much as $280 million worth of ether. Early on, though, Parity disputed those estimates. "This is a learning opportunity (albeit a painful one) for our company, for our collaborators and the community that stands with us," <a href="https://paritytech.io/blog/parity-technologies-multi-sig-wallet-issue-update.html">the company said in a statement</a>. It continued: "Moving forward we will ... work together with the community to make core infrastructure more secure." Even though the problem wasn't as bad as feared, some companies and individuals were hit hard. Cappasity, a startup, was using its Parity wallet for fundraising when it was frozen. The company has 3,264 ether - around $1 million worth - locked up, <a href="https://blog.artoken.io/statement-on-the-parity-multi-sig-wallet-vulnerability-and-the-cappasity-artoken-crowdsale-b3a3fed2d567">according to a blog post</a>. Polkadot, a blockchain startup run by Parity's founder Gavin Wood, was also affected by the problem. <h2>Parity and others have suggested 'hard fork' to undo the hack.</h2>Parity and the community around Ethereum, the blockchain underlying ether, haven't agreed yet to a solution to the frozen accounts. But they're contemplating a so-called hard fork in the blockchain.Blockchains are digital ledgers that record everything that has ever happened involving them. Though the code required to access the wallets was deleted, the wallets themselves and the ether inside them still exist inside the Ethereum blockchain. But without the code, they can't be accessed at this point in the ledger's time line; some observers have compared the situation to a locked safe without a key. A hard fork would force the digital ledger to go back in time to the moment before the critical code was deleted that led to the frozen accounts. The fork would essentially create a new, second path from that point, one in which the accounts were never frozen. Such a move is the only way to unfreeze the wallets, Martin Swende, head of security for the Ethereum Foundation, <a href="https://www.ethnews.com/ethereum-foundations-martin-swende-addresses-parity-freeze">told the cryptocurrency blog</a> EthNews.Technically, hard forks aren't that difficult to do; to most users they would look like a software upgrade. But they can be controversial within blockchain communities. Some enthusiasts fear that frequent forks will compromise the integrity of and outside support for Ethereum and potentially reduce ether's value.The challenges of a hard fork "are more of a political than technical nature," Swende told EthNews. According to the news daily, two tweets from Harsh Mariwala, the chairman of Rs 4,600-crore Marico, narrated this story on Tuesday. In the first tweet, Mariwala said that "Sheen is falling of Modi govt in the context of promises, and gradual delivery. Need to move fast, hope interest rates are reduced today." Then, through another tweet he asserted, "Heard from a leading politician that if elections were held today NDA will barely win 200 seats in spite of weak opposition." 
 
It is not just Mariwala who is unhappy with the Modi government, but many other CEOs also come under the group of cheerless leaders. It's said that the conversation in board rooms is changing. According to a TOI report, “Captains of industry are now highlighting two new concerns, albeit in hushed tones - some of the recent notices from the taxmen and the seemingly unchecked Hindutva agenda of certain right wing groups.” 
 
Some of the business leaders are also minutely observing the attacks on churches as well as the fresh spurt of tax notices. They believe this is sending out a wrong signal to investors at a time when the government is striving hard to woo foreign investors, the financial daily stated. Harsh Goenka, RPG Group chairman, told TOI said that tax demands of such high value would invariably result in increased litigations. "As long as the issues are treated objectively and fairly, it should not worry <keyword id="46431" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India-Inc">India Inc</keyword>. However, as a secular nation, we must avoid any form of fundamentalist activity. Random fascist comments lead to communal disharmony and should be dealt with severely," he said. 
 
A majority of CEOs also agreed that much has happened in the last few months and the Modi government is suffering from the burden of over expectations.
