New Delhi, Advocating DPI's potential in helping nations leapfrog digital transformation, a <keyword id="42981" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="G20" source="Orion">G20</keyword> document prepared by <keyword id="6354424" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="world-bank" source="Orion">World Bank</keyword> has praised India's approach in unlocking the power of digital public infrastructure, including Aadhaar and UPI, for financial inclusion. The impact of DPI goes beyond inclusive finance, to supporting health, education, and sustainability, says the foreward of the document 'G20 policy recommendations for advancing financial inclusion and productivity gains through DPI'. "The India stack exemplifies this approach, combining digital ID, interoperable payments, a digital credentials ledger, and account aggregation. In just six years, it has achieved a remarkable 80 per cent financial inclusion rate-a feat that would have taken nearly five decades without a DPI approach," it said. India's digital ID system Aadhaar, digital payment system UPI, data-exchange platform Digilocker and its other showcase platforms have found a special mention among the examples of DPIs "all of which play a leading role in the advancement of financial inclusion in many countries". Other systems mentioned were Singapore's Singpass, the Philippines' PhilSys, and the UAE's UAE-Pass among the digital ID systems; Brazil's Pix, India's UPI, Turkiye's FAST, the European Union's TIPS, and Thailand's PromptPay under fast payment systems; as well as Estonia's X-Road, Singapore's MyInfo, Australia's Customer Data Right, and the UK's Open Banking. Put simply, Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) refers to blocks or platforms such as digital identification, payment infrastructure and data exchange solutions that help countries deliver essential services to their people, empowering citizens and improving lives by enabling digital inclusion. DPIs are interoperable, open, and inclusive systems supported by technology and provide essential, society-wide, public and private services that play a critical role in accelerating this digital transformation in an inclusive manner. The document also cites India's Data Empowerment and Protection Architecture (DEPA) and India's Account Aggregator (AA) Framework. On Fast Payment Systems, it noted that in some countries, such as India and Brazil the adoption has been "particularly quick and transformative". UPI, it said, has been widely adopted, benefitting from a user-friendly interface, open banking features, and private sector participation. "The UPI platform has gained significant popularity in India; more than 9.41 billion transactions valuing about Rs 14.89 trillion were transacted in May 2023 alone. For the fiscal year 2022-23, the total value of UPI transaction was nearly 50 per cent of India's nominal GDP," the report said. The document goes on to say that an aspect that makes DPIs unique, and that can further reduce existing constraints, is their ability to complement each other or be integrated in end-to-end workflows. One such service enabled by the interaction of open APIs and digital ID systems is the e-KYC or remote authentication services. A case in point is India's Aadhaar biometric identification system, which covers over one billion people and supports APIs, enables remote identification and authentication, it observes. Financial service providers can thus authenticate an individual's identity remotely, even by using selfie-based mechanisms to substitute for in-person customer due diligence verification requirements, it said. India has also figured prominently in the section on 'DPIs' Potential Added Value for the Private Sector', that cites how FSPs and MSMEs could benefit from these digital networks. "For some nonbank financial companies (NBFCs) in India, the AA ecosystem enabled an 8 per cent higher conversion rate in SME lending, a 65 per cent savings in depreciation costs, and a 66 per cent reduction in costs related to fraud detection. According to industry estimates, banks' costs of onboarding customers in India decreased from USD 23 to USD 0.1 with the use of DPI," it said. Through open application programming interface (APIs), India's Open Credit Enablement Network (OCEN) enables MSMEs participating in digital markets to secure credit by using information about their business history, rather than pledging physical assets as collateral. According to the document, in India, the implementation of various DPIs is considered to have played a critical role in the increase in account ownership from just one-fourth of adults in 2008 to almost 80 per cent a decade later "a journey that it is estimated would have taken up to 47 years without DPIs".

World Bank praises India's digital infrastructure for its transformative potential

With <keyword id="19899402" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="digital" source="keywords">digital</keyword> adoption fast gaining currency, <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="keywords">India</keyword> is likely to see <keyword id="19992513" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="retail" source="keywords">retail</keyword> <keyword id="19989657" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="digital-payments" source="keywords">digital payments</keyword> double to USD 7 trillion by 2030 from current levels, a study by Kearney and <keyword id="19942875" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon-Pay" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Amazon Pay" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="Amazon Pay">Amazon Pay</keyword> said. In the report 'How Urban India Pays', Kearney-Amazon Pay said strong adoption of digital payments in <keyword id="21056201" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="online-purchases" source="keywords">online purchases</keyword> has potentially led to a permanent shift in consumer behaviours, fuelling offline adoption as well. While 90 per cent of the respondents of the survey preferred digital payments when making online purchases, affluent consumers lead the way with the highest Degree of Digital Payment Usage (DDPU), tending to use various modes of digital payment for 80 per cent of their transactions. "<keyword id="19955338" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="millennials" source="keywords">Millennials</keyword> and Gen X are leading in the adoption of all types of digital payment instruments," it said. "Men and women both use digital payments in about 72 per cent of their transactions, indicating gender parity." The research was based on an online survey of over 6,000 consumers along with more than 1,000 merchants through offline and online methods across 120 cities with representation from various regions, income groups, city categories, age brackets and genders. India has seen a surge in <keyword id="19990771" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="e-commerce" source="keywords">e-commerce</keyword>, with the market valued at USD 75 billion to USD 80 billion in 2022 and expected to grow at a 21 per cent CAGR until 2030. "In line with India's digital journey, retail digital payments have grown dramatically over the past five years - from USD 300 billion in FY18 to USD 3.6 trillion in FY24. By FY30, they are likely to double to USD 7 trillion," the report said. The Unified Payments Interface (<keyword id="19900911" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="UPI" source="keywords">UPI</keyword>) has been a key driver of this growth, demonstrating a CAGR of 138 per cent in its volumes during FY18-24. Other instruments such as cards and digital wallets are also gaining in popularity, contributing 10 per cent of digital transaction value today. "With such dynamic developments, it is no wonder that India is a global frontrunner in the digital payment landscape, accounting for a stellar 46 per cent of the global digital transaction volumes in 2022," it said. Digital payments have penetrated small towns, with respondents in these areas highlighting that 65 per cent of their transactions are digital, while respondents in larger cities cited this ratio to be 75 per cent. "There is a strong correlation between a city's average DDPU and its retail potential, as measured by the Kearney India Retail Index, with the top six metros displaying both high DDPU and high retail potential," the report said. DDPU surpasses retail potential in some cities such as Lucknow, Patna, Bhopal, Jaipur, Bhubaneswar, Indore, Ahmedabad and Pune, which have a high DDPU nearly matching that of larger metropolitan cities despite having a lower retail potential than the top six metros. The report said co-branded credit cards are gaining momentum. "Emerging methods such as buy now, pay later (BNPL), wearable payments and voice assistant-based payments are also starting to make inroads." Digital modes of payment constitute around 69 per cent of the total transaction volumes for the Indian merchants that were surveyed. Even street vendors such as paan shops, fruit and flower sellers, food stalls, and kirana stores are joining the digital payment brigade. "Challenges for merchant adoption mirror consumer concerns, emphasizing issues of financial fraud, limited connectivity and trust," it said. The report said the next wave of growth in digital payments will be fueled by increasing penetration in segments with lower DDPU, such as consumers in lower-income groups and smaller towns, along with enhancing the value of spending via digital modes of payment in the higher DDPU segments by addressing their concerns. "All key stakeholders across the digital payments' ecosystem, including payment providers, the government, and value-added services players, will need to play a part in expanding digital payment adoption," it said. The focus areas should be empowering communities with financial education by launching target programmes to boost awareness of digital payments and new methods such as UPI Lite and UPI Lite X, especially for aspiring consumer segments, women in small towns, and street commerce merchants, to encourage higher adoption. Also, there is a need to create user-friendly consumer journeys by streamlining documentation and know-your-customer (<keyword id="19910870" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kyc" source="keywords">KYC</keyword>) processes, optimising user interfaces, and establishing responsive customer complaint resolution mechanisms, it said adding also there is a need to enhance digital infrastructure by addressing systems and network issues and exploring innovations such as UPI Lite X for areas with limited internet. Also, the risk of fraud has to be minimised and access to credit-based payment methods expanded by using alternate data for underwriting risk, developing innovative credit products and promoting credit education for financial health. "These areas can help India overcome challenges in the digital payment ecosystem by fostering a more inclusive, secure, and user-friendly environment, thereby enhancing the adoption of digital payments among consumers and merchants in India," it added.

Metaverse for mental healthcare? Experts ‘cautiously optimistic’ after WEF report

<div type="image" title="britney spears" height="900" width="1200" msid="80889662" hostid="261"></div><ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="14710" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Britney-spears">Britney Spears</keyword> became an overnight success, then faced years of constant harassment.</li><li>When the scrutiny became too overwhelming, Spears and her mental state became a worldwide joke.</li><li>These days we're better at acknowledging <keyword id="6354774" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mental-health">mental health</keyword> stigma, but we still pick at stars, and round-the-clock <keyword id="6354632" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="social-media">social media</keyword> has replaced Spears' swarming paparazzi.</li></ul>I have a vivid memory of going to the grocery store with my mom when I was 13, and just staring.It was 2007, and tabloid covers of a tired-looking, stressed-out, and bald-headed Britney Spears dominated the checkout aisle magazine stands.Spears is 13 years my senior and as a child, I'd always seen her as the woman I wanted to become: Gorgeous, talented, and beloved. Those paparazzi photos, burned into my head forever, portrayed the opposite. I felt sad, and pitied Spears when she was the butt of primetime TV jokes, but I couldn't explain why it felt wrong. Last week, when the New York Times and Hulu released the documentary <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/article/framing-britney-spears.html">"Framing Britney Spears,"</a> it clicked. The film is a look at <a href="https://www.insider.com/britney-spears-facts-2019-1">her rise to fame</a>, the media bombardment she endured, and how <a href="https://www.insider.com/inside-britney-spears-conservatorship-freebritney-movement-2020-12">she ended up in a 12-year conservatorship</a> meaning that, to this day, her father controls her money and life.It put so perfectly what we all had trouble expressing at the time: Britney Spears, at 26 years old, was in shambles and needed compassion and help. Instead, she got abuse and scrutiny.It's been over a decade and a lot has changed. If Spears rose to fame today, we'd have language to identify the bullying that put her mental <keyword id="6354750" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="health">health</keyword> at risk. But that doesn't mean we're better at shutting down harassment and treating <keyword id="6412373" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="celebrities">celebrities</keyword> as real people.Celebrities today have as fraught a <keyword id="6355233" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Relationship">relationship</keyword> with their social media followers as the stars of 2007 had with paparazzi and magazines. Take Spears herself: she barely goes out, isn't working, and famously does not post anything of note on her Instagram. And yet every photo, video, and caption is the subject of scrutiny. There's even a <a href="https://britneysinstagram.libsyn.com/">weekly podcast analyzing her posts, seen by 27.7 million followers.</a>Whether we've got the language for it or not, we just don't know how to leave famous people alone, and that's what sends people like Spears into a spiral.<h2>Two events pushed us to take mental health more seriously: Sandy Hook and Robin Williams' death</h2>It wasn't until recently that Americans had the vocabulary to discuss mental health.In 2006, a year before Spears' breakdown made national headlines, the National Alliance on Mental Illness <a href="https://www.nami.org/getattachment/About-NAMI/Publications/Reports/GTS06_final.pdf">released its first report in 15 years</a> examining the state of healthcare for those struggling with anxiety, depression, and other mind-related issues. The report concluded the United States deserved a D-rating for its lack of mental-health infrastructure and information access.<a href="https://sirisatnam.com/meet-dr-siri/">Siri Sat Nam</a>, a licensed marriage and family therapist who's worked with stars like Katy Perry and Waka Flocka Flame, remembers a turning point in 2013. The Sandy Hook elementary school shooting, where 20-year-old Adam Lanza opened fire and killed 20 children and then himself, was a pivotal moment for America's mental-health reckoning. The New York Times later reported <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2014/11/22/nyregion/before-newtown-shootings-adam-lanzas-mental-problems-completely-untreated-report-says.html">Lanza had a history of untreated mental health issues</a>."I think this is stuff that's in the underbelly of consciousness and it rises at particular times when a culture is ready. When traditions are really shook up, it calls us to get the term mental health," and the horror of Sandy Hook did just that, Sat Nam told Insider.That year, state funding for <a href="https://www.nami.org/getattachment/About-NAMI/Publications/Reports/2013StateLegislationReportFinal.pdf">mental health services increased.</a> Months later, the rollout of the Affordable Care Act began, giving 2.65 million Americans with mental health needs access to care.<div type="image" title="britney spears" height="1352" width="1800" msid="80889663" hostid="261"></div>Another shift came in 2014, when the beloved actor Robin Williams died of suicide, shocking fans who knew little of his behind-the-scenes struggle with Parkinson's disease and depression. Moments after the news broke, Twitter and Instagram were <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/13/business/media/robin-williamss-death-reflected-in-social-media.html">flooded with images of Williams</a>. His death "served as a reminder that mental illness affects everyone regardless of age or socioeconomic status," Gregory Dalack, chair of the Michigan Medicine Department of Psychiatry, told <a href="https://www.huffpost.com/entry/decade-defined-mental-health_l_5dfbb32fe4b01834791d713c">HuffPost reporter Lindsay Holmes</a>.Over the next few years, our vocabulary built. As a society we discussed mental health in the wake of the deaths of famed fashion designer Kate Spade and chef Anthony Bourdain, also by suicide.We also saw mental health creep into pop culture, with positive portrayals of therapists on <a href="https://www.huffpost.com/entry/decade-defined-mental-health_l_5dfbb32fe4b01834791d713c">television shows</a> like "13 Reasons Why," "This Is Us," and <a href="https://www.huffpost.com/entry/reality-tv-normalizing-therapy_l_5d77d4e5e4b075210233f4f9">"The Real Housewives of Potomac."</a>But more conversations and positive portrayals haven't led to actionable change, as rates of anxiety and depression continue to rise. 6.7% of Americans, or 17.3 million people, said they <a href="https://adaa.org/understanding-anxiety/depression">suffered from depression</a> in 2017, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America. 18.1% or 40 million <a href="https://adaa.org/about-adaa/press-room/facts-statistics">suffer from anxiety</a> every year.<h2>Relentless social media makes it difficult for the famous to catch a break </h2>"Framing Britney Spears" illustrates how the paparazzi hounded the star for years, to the point she went on TV to say her biggest wish was for them to leave her alone.But, as the documentary lays out, her tearful request wasn't enough. Daniel Ramos, a former paparazzo who followed Spears and took the famous shot of her bashing his car with an umbrella, still sees his relationship with her in a positive light."It was like she needed us and we needed her. We both needed each other. It was a great kind of a relationship," Ramos said in the film. "There were times when she [was] like, 'Can you leave me alone for the day?'" Ramos said. "But it wasn't like, 'Leave me alone forever.' You know what I mean?"<div type="image" title="Britney Spears leaves the Stanley Mosk Courthouse after a hearing regarding her ongoing child custody case on October 26, 2007 in Los Angeles California." height="1950" width="2601" msid="80889664" hostid="261"></div>Today fans can like, comment, and directly message their favorite stars on social media, actions that give a false sense of closeness, a term researchers call <a href="https://psmag.com/social-justice/rihanna-doesnt-give-a-crap-about-you">"parasocial interaction."</a>America's fixation on celebrities as quasi-royals is a "double-edged sword," Sat Nam said.These one-sided relationships that can feel two-sided to fans have <a href="https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/how-our-make-believe-relationships-with-celebrities-shape-our-social-lives">existed since the advent of TV</a>, but have become more commonplace on oversaturated social media channels."The issue that that then creates is that sometimes viewers will feel some sort of ownership over the creator and the content," Arienne Ferchaud, an assistant professor in the School of Communication at Florida State University who studies the relationships between online personalities and the public, <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2018/9/17/17832948/youtube-youtubers-influencer-creator-fans-subscribers-friends-celebrities">told The Verge's Megan Farokhmanesh</a>.When celebrities give into their fandom's pull, the aftermath can be devastating for their mental health because their public and private lives become blurred and they can lose their sense of self, according to Sat Nam. Though the #FreeBritney movement has a positive bend, with <a href="https://www.billboard.com/articles/news/9445049/free-britney-spears-movement-started/">global marches</a> and constant messages of support on her Instagram, the level of surveillance can be suffocating."The public makes a star. They choose, gather around them, support them, and buy their records or whatever. Not saying they're not talented and great, but we make them. And then we also can destroy them," Sat Nam said."That's a lot for anybody to go through, being under scrutiny all the time. It's exciting at one point when you first start with, but if you haven't prepared for that, there's no privacy," said Sat Nam.<h2>Cyberbullying can be more insidious than in-person hate</h2>If social media users band together to scrutinize someone behind the safety of a computer screen, the feedback can be <a href="https://www.insider.com/toxic-tragic-results-of-online-hate-bullying-cancel-culture-2020-2">too overwhelming for one person to handle</a>.It's something <a href="https://www.doctorsam.com/about-doctor-sam/">Dr. Samantha Saltz</a>, a board-certified child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist in Boca Raton, Florida, sees often with her adolescent patients who've experienced cyberbullying."The victims of bullying are unable to separate themselves from anywhere where they have access to the internet, so they get bullied over and over and over again. They literally cannot separate themselves," Saltz told Insider. "It used to be where we could separate ourselves from any kind of bad situation. We go home versus being at work where something bad is happening."It's also a reality for social-media-present celebrities today.15-year-old TikTok star Charli D'Amelio said she gets <a href="https://www.insider.com/charli-dixie-damelio-tik-tok-biggest-stars-cyberbullying-video-2020-2">hundreds of thousands of hate comments</a> every week about her appearance. British reality TV star <a href="https://www.insider.com/toxic-tragic-results-of-online-hate-bullying-cancel-culture-2020-2">Caroline Flack</a> died by suicide in February 2020 after her personal life became months-long tabloid and social media gossip. This month, singer <a href="https://hellogiggles.com/celebrity/chloe-bailey-defense-shamed-instagram/">Chloe Bailey was shamed</a> for being too sexy on TikTok after she posted a video to a viral dancing trend on the app.<h2>We just can't leave celebrities alone</h2>I wish I could tell my 13-year-old self the world has become a kinder to place to people struggling with mental health issues big and small, but that would be a lie. Spears remains under her conservatorship with her father keeping partial control over her <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/maddieberg/2021/02/10/as-the-freebritney-movement-grows-a-look-at-britney-spears-net-worth/#:~:text=%E2%80%9CShe%20will%20not%20perform%20again,the%20rest%20is%20in%20cash.">$60 million net worth</a>. Despite a record-breaking Vegas residency and hit songs and music videos in recent years, 39-year-old Spears is still fighting to prove she's fit to be independent. Her Instagram, the only way fans can communicate with Spears, has become just as scrutinized as her every move the paparazzi documented and hosts called out on national television.On Monday, Spears <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CLDazlnAftJ/">shared a selfie on Instagram</a> with a simple caption of three mango emojis and no words."We're listening," one follower commented. Another said they were googling the "spiritual meaning of mangoes" as a clue into the potential hidden meaning behind the pop star's post. Another thought "mango" could really mean "Man, go," a reference to Britney's father and his power over her.Despite Spears' disappearance from the public eye, we're still scrapping for anything she does. We mean well, but hundreds of thousands of well-meaning remarks can be overwhelming, just like a swarm of camera-clad paparazzi.
