The plan sounded brilliant in theory as all you had to do was:<br />

Each badge has a unique ‘Bar Code’, which was supposed to act as a payment gateway at the Festival.<br />

There were simple steps to load your badge:<br />

1) The E-Badges could be loaded with CASH in Indian rupees (INR) or via Indian and/or international CREDIT/DEBIT CARDS. The minimum value for recharges INR 50.<br />
<br />
2) The badges may be used for the following purchases across the Festival Hub of Diggi Palace:<br />
<br />
Food Beverages: prices for food and beverages varied from INR 10 – 2,500.<br />
Merchandise.<br />
Books at the Festival Bookstore.<br />

3) CREDIT / DEBIT CARD recharges had a bank transaction fee of 1% of the transaction amount.<br />

4) You were to receive an SMS on your registered mobile number informing you of the total amount spent.<br />
<br />
5) You could also pay directly through an e-wallet (operated By Freecharge) at all purchase points in addition to your badge.<br />
<br />
6) You were also eligible for Rs. 50 cash back for up to 6 transactions with Freecharge.<br />
<br />
All that sounded well and good until it didn't work.<br />
<br /> After the first day of the festival, the stalls that were put for festival pass recharges were redeeming the money that people had put in and hardly any stall that I visited for food, books and merchandise agreed to use the Freecharge mobile wallet except once when I used <keyword id="6357120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="PayTM">PayTM</keyword>.<br />

They didn't eat them," he said.</p><p>Baked beans are said to have originated from a Native American dish in which beans were cooked with fat and maple syrup, according to the <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-446502/The-history-humble--yummy--baked-bean.html">Mail Online</a>. European settlers were believed to have adapted the recipe using pork and molasses.</p><p>Heinz <a href="https://www.heinz.co.uk/our-story">introduced</a> baked beans in the UK in the early 1900s. They were originally sold as a luxury item at the British department store Fortnum and Mason. Queen Elizabeth II <a href="https://www.yours.co.uk/life/home/29-things-you-never-knew-about-baked-beans/">granted the brand a royal warrant in 1954</a>, making Heinz the official supplier of beans at every royal household in the UK.</p><p>The US and UK versions of Heinz beans are said to be quite different. According to <a href="https://culinaryginger.com/british-baked-beans/">Culinary Ginger</a>, the US version is "cooked with pork (bacon) molasses and brown sugar and the sauce is much sweeter and thick," whereas the UK version is made without meat and with a thinner tomato sauce.</p><p>The <a href="https://www.heinz.co.uk/beanz/product/100185200042/baked-beanz">Heinz website</a> describes the British version of the product as "high in fibre, high in protein and low in fat."</p><p>"Heinz made a British bean with less sugar - the Brits don't want sugar in their breakfast," McGrady said. "But that's not to say the Brits don't love sugar; we eat more chocolate than anyone else in the world. Princess Diana's former chef says he made the 'cardinal sin' of serving her favorite breakfast - a can of baked beans - to Americans

<p>But stop going to Vegas to gamble - go for the food.</p>
<p>Las Vegas has always been an under-the-radar oasis for foodies, with high-end options like <a href="http://www.mgmgrand.com/restaurants/joel-robuchon-french-restaurant.aspx" target="_blank">Joël Robuchon</a>, <a href="http://www.caesarspalace.com/restaurants/guy-savoy.html" target="_blank">Guy Savoy</a>, and <a href="http://bouchonbistro.com/" target="_blank">Thomas Keller's Bouchon Bistro</a>.</p>
<p>But on a recent trip to Sin City, I was shocked by the number of lesser-known, reasonably priced establishments that offered excellent dining experiences.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/best-new-las-vegas-restaurants-2014-3" target="_blank">More than 60 new restaurants have opened, been designed, or plan to open</a> in Las Vegas, according to Travel &amp; Leisure. Many of these are affordable establishments with entrées in the $15-$30 range. It makes sense that the food scene is expanding: thanks to Vegas' <a href="http://www.lvcva.com/article/las-vegas-welcomes-nearly-40-million/937/" target="_blank">nearly 40 million annual tourists</a>, the restaurant industry rakes in an estimated $8 billion annually, <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/27/dining/examining-the-las-vegas-food-scene.html?pagewanted=all&amp;_r=0" target="_blank">according to Applied Analysis</a>. The demand for great, attainable food is there, and the city has begun to deliver.</p>
<p>Contrast this with a decade ago, when the Vegas culinary scene was an arms race for hotels on the Strip to acquire a five-star restaurant. "When I first came 10 years ago, we felt a sort of competition between the restaurants that were within the casinos to set up these quality restaurants," Joël Robuchon told Business Insider. "I knew the president of MGM, and he was very passionate about food and beverage. He came to Paris and asked me to open a high-end dining restaurant; he wanted somebody who already had three stars in the Michelin Guide."</p>
<p>MGM Grand did ultimately open a Joël Robuchon, as well as Robuchon's <a href="http://www.mgmgrand.com/restaurants/atelier-joel-robuchon-french-restaurant.aspx" target="_blank">L'Atelier</a>, both of which now boast Michelin stars. For more ultra-high-end dining the Strip, the Bellagio has <a href="http://www.bellagio.com/restaurants/picasso.aspx" target="_blank">Picasso</a>, a restaurant filled with works by the late artist, the Mandarin Oriental has highly-rated <a href="http://www.mandarinoriental.com/lasvegas/fine-dining/twist-by-pierre-gagnaire/">Twist</a>, Aria has <a href="http://www.aria.com/dining/restaurants/barmasa" target="_blank">barMASA</a> and <a href="http://www.aria.com/dining/restaurants/jean-georges-steakhouse" target="_blank">Jean Georges Steakhouse</a>, and Caesars Palace has <a href="http://www.caesarspalace.com/restaurants/guy-savoy.html#.UznDkl7OqUc" target="_blank">Guy Savoy</a>. The list goes on and on.</p>

<p>But whereas it used to be all about the fine dining, Vegas restaurants today are placing more value on quality food at affordable prices. Hotels now have sports bars, buffets, and sushi spots with ridiculously good food, and these places are mere doors away from the fine dining powerhouses that used to dominate the scene.</p>
<p>Take for instance <a href="http://www.mgmgrand.com/restaurants/tap.aspx" target="_blank">TAP</a>, a new sports bar that recently opened in the MGM Grand. With more tahn 60 huge flatscreen TVs lining the bars, and classic bar food like sliders and spinach dip on the menu, some foodies would walk right past it. But the executive chef Steve Barr has the best fried veggies in the city (his green beans and onion rings still manage to have a snap) and TAP's Reuben sandwich is made with pastrami that melts in your mouth. </p>
<p>There aren't very many sports bars on the Strip, so it would be very easy for TAP to have simply relied on the standard beer and burgers. Instead, they make their own ice cream, cure their own meats, and offer a specialty beer flight menu.</p>
<p>And TAP isn't a rarity. H<span style="line-height: 1.5em;">ouse-cured meats, fresh ingredients, and homemade fare like bread or ice cream are becoming standard at casino establishments and on the Strip.</span></p>

<p>From the huge selection at the <a href="https://www.bellagio.com/restaurants/the-buffet.aspx" target="_blank">Bellagio Buffet</a> to the amazing food at the Cosmopolitan's <a href="http://www.cosmopolitanlasvegas.com/taste/restaurant-collection/wicked-spoon.aspx" target="_blank">Wicked Spoon</a> and the high-class fare at the Bellagio's <a href="https://www.bellagio.com/restaurants/jasmine.aspx" target="_blank">Jasmine</a>, Vegas buffets are shaking their abysmal reputations. The ones I tried were all top-notch, with cooks and staff at each station who were not only knowledgeable about how the food was prepared, but where it came from.</p>
<p>There's no doubt the food scene in Las Vegas will continue to get better. Celebrity chef Giada <span>De Laurentiis</span> is coming to the Cromwell and everyone in Vegas is excited about Daniel Boulud's upcoming DB Brasserie at Venetian, both of which will be opening on the Strip in 2014 and promise to only add to the city's burgeoning foodie culture.</p>
<p>So the next time you're in Sin City, skip the sinning and get right to the food.</p>

Don't Go To Las Vegas To Gamble - Go For The Food

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Shared Access worked with a football club to power headsets for fans with visual impairments.</li><li>It installed a private 5G network for fast connectivity and nearly instantaneous streaming.</li></ul><p><em>This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Sam Jackman, the chief development officer of Shared Access, a European company that develops mobile-connectivity solutions. The following has been edited for length and clarity.</em></p><p>My company, Shared Access, has been working with the Crystal Palace Football Club in London for years to improve <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-5g-technology-leaves-connectivity-legacy-in-olympic-host-cities-2024-8">connectivity</a> at its stadium, Selhurst Park.</p><p>It started when Vodafone approached Shared Access to help build a system for the stadium that ensures great service even when all 30,000 fans are trying to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/paris-olympics-internet-connection-5g-mobile-technology-2024-7">use their phones at once</a>.</p><p>Last year, the Crystal Palace team came to us for help supporting a specific cohort of fans: those with visual impairments. In partnership with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.givevision.net/">GiveVision</a>, they were working on deploying headsets that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/5g-tech-innovations-behind-paris-olympic-games-connectivity-timeline-2024-8">stream live match footage</a> directly to fans with partial sight, allowing them to sit anywhere in the stadium but see every moment in sync with the pitch action — and they needed <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/5g-advanced-standalone-6g-qualcomm-huawei-mwc-2024-3">faster connectivity</a> to make it happen.</p><h2 id="a62d967b-58dc-4173-a02e-13c9a124d3fe">The existing networks weren't cutting it</h2><p>Before coming to us, the team working on the project tried running the headsets over WiFi, but there was too much latency. People using the headsets experienced everything on a slight delay, with the fans around them reacting to something on the field before they could see the action.</p><p>The 4G network that we'd previously deployed with Vodafone, and even public 5G networks, weren't going to do the job. Public networks have a lot of firewalls and protocols that create additional delays, such as the need for data to travel from the stadium to the core network of a mobile operator outside the stadium and then back to the user. It's also difficult because the number of other users using the network inside the venue slows things down.</p><p>We decided to install a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-private-wireless-connectivity-changing-airport-experience-aviation-mwc-2024-10">private 5G network</a> with an on-site core in the stadium. This allows for fully enclosed connectivity within the venue, avoiding external data transfer and eliminating the security-protocol challenges of major mobile-network operators. It provides nearly instantaneous performance, with faster speeds than 4G and even purer 5G speeds than most public users experience. Additionally, because the club has total control over who can use the network, it can ensure all the bandwidth goes to these headsets only.</p><p>On September 21, we officially launched the program, making Crystal Palace FC the first football club in the world to offer a permanent vision-enhancement system at its stadium for fans with sight impairments. Since we've launched, we've seen more fans with visual impairments who previously didn't think coming to a game was worth it show up and have a great experience.</p><h2 id="aeed7829-1de0-4bc7-8572-0328ee6a1095">Future applications for private 5G networks</h2><p>While helping these fans see is more than enough justification for implementing this private network, there are also so many <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-edge-computing-5g-cloud-artificial-intelligence-2024-3">opportunities</a> for how the tech could be used.</p><p>For instance, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/barcelona-market-la-boqueria-5g-ar-personal-shoppers-2023-9">food and beverage vendors</a> could use the private network to power their tills, allowing the stadium to expand its food offerings to areas that previously didn't have strong enough connectivity. Security cameras could be installed in places where it's physically too difficult to get power and fiber wiring. Broadcasters may be able to use private 5G to get footage out more quickly, and without having to deploy as much equipment to the stadium, which would reduce the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/paris-olympics-how-5g-tech-could-curb-environmental-impact-2024-7">carbon footprint</a> of their work.</p><p>It doesn't have to be just sports, either. I'd suggest any kind of venue to consider: What are your problems? What are the things you'd love to do but think you can't because of connectivity?</p><p>Ultimately, having the foundation of this private network allows so much room for creativity in terms of what you can layer on top of it. Twelve months ago, I'd never heard of GiveVision's headsets, and it had never thought about using a private 5G network, so this collaboration ended up being perfect. Who knows what other applications are out there? I hope other partners and vendors collaborate just as imaginatively to come up with possibilities.</p>

The Wilderness Lodge is your place.</p><p>Sometimes it's nice just to take a stroll through the resort grounds and enjoy a cup of coffee before the chaos of the parks.</p><h2><strong>Sprinkles in Disney Springs has a 24-hour cupcake ATM</strong></h2><p>If you're in need of a sugary treat, head to Sprinkles cupcake ATM at <a href="https://www.insider.com/i-go-to-disney-world-frequently-favorite-things-to-do-2021-9">Disney Springs</a>.</p><p>The cupcakes or cookies are dispensed in neat pink boxes any time of day or night. </p><p>I don't know how they do it, but it's pretty magical.</p><h2><strong>I make time to resort-hop at the Grand Floridian </strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="woman walking down a pathway at the grand floridian resort disney world" height="2274" width="3024" msid="87702279" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>The Grand Floridian is probably the fanciest resort at Disney World, and I've had some serious luck resort-hopping there. </p><p>I'm not sure if this is a regular occurrence, but sometimes you can find <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-is-free-to-do-at-disney-world-2021-8">free activities, food, or beverages</a> around the grounds.</p><p>On two recent occasions, I was able to enjoy a nice glass of champagne and s'mores. </p><h2><strong>World of Disney at Disney Springs is the best place to grab souvenirs</strong></h2><p>Don't shop inside the <keyword id="11915011" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="theme-parks" source="Orion">theme parks</keyword> unless you're looking for something specific to that park.</p><p>I usually wait until the end of my trip to do my shopping at the gigantic World of Disney store at Disney Springs. You can usually get a great view and avoid the exit crowds.</p><h2><strong>I end my trips with a late lunch at the Boathouse</strong></h2><p>Before heading back to Miami, I love to enjoy a relaxing lunch at the Boathouse in Disney Springs.</p><p>There's something so soothing about sitting on the outdoor deck enjoying seafood - I recommend the lobster roll. It brings a quick, 24-hour trip to a nice close.</p>

As of now, travel portals eat into the profit margins of hotel chains, which is what has forced them to look for such alternatives. Online agents make up for as much as 20% of the bookings done in hotel chains, which constitute a major part of their business. <br />

"Loyalty can be a silver bullet for us as the cost of customer acquisition in this channel is very low," said Chinmai Sharma, chief revenue officer at Taj Hotels Resorts &amp; Palaces. "So the idea of a strategic partnership in this space with like-minded hotel brands in different geographies will give more earn and burn capabilities to the members." <br />

If and when the Food and Drug Administration approves the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/marijuana-cbd-drug-promising-for-epilepsy-2018-5">new CBD-based drug</a> - a decision currently <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/marijuana-cbd-drug-promising-for-epilepsy-2018-5">slated for the end of June</a> - it will turn the compound into one that can be legally prescribed by a doctor.</p><p>That approval will also jump-start demand for products that have not been federally reviewed, opening up a huge opportunity for retailers and manufacturers to either work alongside the new regulations or take advantage of the legal grey area in which they're currently operating.</p><p>The move could unleash what Drug Enforcement Administration public affairs officer Barbara Carreno called a "sea change" for the existing market of less expensive but untested and potentially risky CBD products, such as those sold in convenience stores and marijuana dispensaries.</p><h2>The drug that could revolutionize the CBD market</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Courtesy GW Pharmaceuticals</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Since at least 2017, drug company GW Pharmaceuticals has been presenting <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/marijuana-cbd-drug-promising-for-epilepsy-2018-5">strong research data</a> to suggest that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/marijuana-cbd-drug-promising-for-epilepsy-2018-5">its CBD-based medicine, a syrup called Epidiolex</a>, can treat the symptoms of two rare forms of childhood epilepsy that are characterized by violent seizures (known as drop seizures).</p><p>Although the Food and Drug Administration is not slated to make a final decision on the drug's potential approval until June 27, experts say an <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/marijuana-cbd-drug-promising-for-epilepsy-2018-5">official green light is likely</a>. </p><p>"This is clearly a breakthrough drug for an awful disease,"<span> </span><a href="https://johnmendelson.com/about-me/">John Mendelson</a>, a panel member and senior scientist at the<span> </span><a href="https://friendsresearch.org/">Friends Research Institute</a>, said during a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/marijuana-cbd-drug-promising-for-epilepsy-2018-5">public pre-approval meeting</a> to discuss the drug's scientific benefits in April.</p><p><a href="https://nyulangone.org/doctors/1679581623/orrin-devinsky">Orrin Devinsky</a>, a neurologist at New York University Langone Health and a lead author on some of the GW Pharmaceuticals studies, told Business Insider, "I'd personally be very surprised if this drug was not approved."</p><p>If Epidiolex is approved, the DEA has 90 days to shift the classification of marijuana-derived CBD from the current categorization as something with "no recognized medical use" to either a Schedule 2 or 3 drug, much like the popular ADHD medication Adderall.</p><p>Once that happens, "all the [CBD] manufacturers have to be registered with us," Carreno said. "That's going to make a huge difference to the industry."</p><h2>A legal grey area with unregulated products that range from teas to dog treats</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Shutterstock</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>But for now, thousands of CBD products exist in legal limbo.</p><p>That's because there are two main sources of CBD: marijuana (which includes the leaves of the plant), and hemp (just the stalks and sterile seeds).</p><p>While marijuana-derived CBD is only legal in the 28 states plus Washington, DC where marijuana has been legalized (as well as the 15 states where CBD alone has been legalized), hemp-derived CBD falls under a sizeable legal loophole: it is exempted from DEA regulation according to a 2006 law.</p><p>But there's a lot of confusion in the space about which CBD products are legal or not. That's made some CBD manufactuers skittish about selling products outside of states where marijuana is legal.</p><p>Even so, plenty of other CBD companies are looking to expand across the country, reasoning that because their products are hemp-derived, they're legally in the clear.</p><p>Denver-based company Phoenix Tears recently <a href="https://hempindustrydaily.com/7-eleven-cbd-products-4500-stores-by-year-end/">signed an agreement with MarketHub Retail Services, a distributor that works with 7-Eleven franchisees,</a> to get its hemp-derived CBD products in up to 4,500 stores by the end of this year.</p><p>"This agreement confirms our belief that CBD's status as a mainstream wellness option has arrived," Phoenix Tears founder Janet Rosendahl-Sweeney <a href="https://hempindustrydaily.com/7-eleven-cbd-products-4500-stores-by-year-end/">said in a recent statement</a>.</p><p>Regardless of where the product comes from, there's another pressing issue facing the CBD industry. The products are poorly regulated, and so there is wide variation in content, safety, and price.</p><p>For a <a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/article-abstract/2661569">2017 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association</a>, researchers tested 84 CBD products purchased from 31 different online retailers. Roughly seven out of 10 items had different levels of CBD than what was written on the label. Of all of the items tested, roughly half had more CBD than was indicated; a quarter had less. And 18 of the samples tested positive for THC, despite it not being listed on the label.</p><p>"I've seen a lot of dirty CBD manufacturing facilities," said Kevin Harlyall, the CEO of a company called <a href="https://thecbdpalace.com/">the CBD Palace</a> that audits CBD companies and creates a list of vendors it deems safe for customers. There's a sea change coming for the $1 billion marijuana-based industry you've never heard of

<ul class="summary-list"><li>In August, I flew from New York to <keyword id="6372909" type="LOCATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="turkey">Turkey</keyword>.</li><li>It's one of the few countries inviting American travelers, and its relatively strong <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> response makes it an attractive destination.</li><li>The country offers cheap <keyword id="6354692" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Travel">travel</keyword> insurance to cover medical costs if you get the virus, businesses take precautions by wrapping everything in plastic, and there are hand-sanitizing stations everywhere you look.</li><li>The country's beauty and optimistic vibe stood in stark contrast with New York.</li></ul><p>In early August, I did something that many friends and family thought was completely crazy — I went to New York's JFK Airport, boarded a <keyword id="99419" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Turkish-Airlines">Turkish Airlines</keyword> flight, and made my way to Istanbul for a 12-day adventure in Turkey.</p><p>Yes, I understood that we were in the middle of a global pandemic and, sure, I realized that travel — especially international travel — had become almost impossible for Americans. But Turkey was one of the few European holiday destinations still open to Yanks and I had a friend who knew the country well. All I had to do was show up.</p><p>Part of the reason I went is because Turkey has, for the most part, <a href="https://www.economist.com/europe/2020/06/04/what-turkey-got-right-about-the-pandemic">handled COVID-19 with surprising success</a>. Its caseload <a href="https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/region/turkey">peaked in April</a>. And despite being far less wealthy — and far more populated — than traditional summer beach spots like Spain and Italy, Turkey's infection rate has <a href="https://www.the-sun.com/lifestyle/travel/1322064/coronavirus-greece-turkey-croatia-cases-infection-rate-quarantine/">mostly been lower than those better-known Mediterranean locations</a>. It's even <a href="https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/greece-switzerland-risk-being-added-22570130">lower than Greece</a>, barely 30 minutes away from much of Turkey's southern coastline.</p><p>True, some <keyword id="6355005" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="news">news</keyword> organizations are suggesting that Turkey's infection and death rates <a href="https://www.pri.org/stories/2020-08-20/turkey-doctors-fear-coronavirus-numbers-are-higher-government-admits">may be higher</a> than reported. And locals who I met regularly spoke of an impending "second wave." But for now, at least, life in Turkey feels, yes, almost normal.</p><p>Most appealing of all, Turkey launched a new program offering affordable, comprehensive <keyword id="6354750" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="health">health</keyword> insurance for travelers to cover medical costs in case of COVID-19 infection. Launched by Turkey's <a href="https://travel.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/destination/international/turkey-to-introduce-covid-19-insurance-package-for-all-foreign-guests-from-july-1/76531932">Ministry of Tourism and Culture in June</a>, the plan provides between 3,000 and 7,000 euros worth of health coverage for a fee between 15 and 23 euros — about $25 per person. Although I already had solid travel insurance — and was confident I'd remain healthy — the program offered an added sense of security.</p><div type="image" title="istanbul" height="1134" width="1511" msid="77922347" hostid="261"></div><p>The insurance complements the ministry's larger <a href="https://www.tga.gov.tr/about-safe-tourism-program/">Safe Tourism Certification Program,</a> which established a series of strict parameters for hospitality operators nationwide.</p><p>"Early on we realized that corona was not going away anytime soon," Timuçin Güler, General Director of Promotion of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Turkey, told Insider. "So we had to take actions that would ensure safety for everyone — foreign travelers and Turkish citizens."</p><p>And those actions are extensive, explains Güler, who notes that tourism levels are less than half of a typical year right now. Hotels, restaurants, trains, taxis, <keyword id="6569650" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="airplanes">airplanes</keyword>, and airports must pass strict monthly sanitary inspections or face extensive fines — or closure. There are also robust testing, quarantine, and treatment plans in place for tourists, with most services offered in hotels.</p><p>As a result of these measures, Turkey has managed to remain off of the British government's <a href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/08/24/countries-quarantine-list-uk-travel-rules-portugal/">mandatory 14-day quarantine list</a> for its citizens traveling abroad this summer. There's no corresponding policy from the US government — but if Turkey is safe enough for the Brits, it's safe enough for me. And I am not alone.</p><p>"The level of commitment demonstrated by both the Turkish government and the private sector to minimize the virus has been noticeable from airports to dining to hotels," Kuwaiti <a href="https://www.instagram.com/talal.alrashed/?hl=en">travel and lifestyle expert Talal Al Rashed</a>, who has regularly visited Turkey since 2005, told Insider. "You quickly begin to appreciate the seriousness of the government's efforts to help tourism get back on its feet."</p><h2>Everything is wrapped in plastic</h2><p>Still, while Turkey may be relatively safe, travel there remains far from normal.</p><p>Take the flight, for instance. Turkish Airlines is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-airlines-in-the-world-2018-skytrax-2018-7">often considered as among the best in the world</a> with elaborate in-flight meals and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/25-best-airlines-in-the-world-entertainment-2019-7">amenities</a> throughout the cabin.</p><p>No more.</p><p>While the actual seats — especially in Business Class — remain pure comfort, there is no longer any hot food, poured beverages, magazines, or newspapers. Instead, travelers are greeted with in-flight safety kits filled with hand wash and face masks, which they're told repeatedly must cover their mouths and noses from boarding to arrival. Temperatures are taken upon touch-down and flights are staggered so folks from multiple nations minimally mingle at immigration.</p><p>Everything is tightly wrapped in plastic, which certainly feels sanitary, but also feels like travel from a far less eco-conscious era. One can only worry that if the coronavirus doesn't kill us, we will, instead, drown in a sea of plastic.</p><div type="image" title="turkish airlines food coronavirus" height="1875" width="2500" msid="77922348" hostid="261"></div><p>The never-ending plastic continued throughout the trip, which felt at once surreal and completely ordinary. There are plastic barriers separating drivers from passengers in Turkish taxi cabs and hefty plastic panels between myself and staffers at the new <a href="https://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/istjb-jw-marriott-istanbul-bosphorus/">JW Marriott Istanbul Bosphorus</a>. Opened just before lock-down in the hip Karaköy district — soon home to both a posh <a href="https://www.peninsula.com/en/istanbul">Peninsula Hotel</a> and a massive <a href="https://www.dailysabah.com/business/tourism/istanbuls-galataport-set-to-welcome-first-cruise-ship-in-april">new cruise ship terminal</a> — the JW Marriott inhabits century-old office buildings and is moments from the Bosphorus itself. Anchored by a soaring light-filled atrium, the hotel offers pristine views of the landmark mosques and towers that have lured travelers to Istanbul for centuries.</p><p>Outside, the hotel fronts lively streets packed with face mask-wearing locals sitting in cute cafes or hanging at mezze or kebab joints. Inside, the feeling is decidedly less "normal." Buffets are banned at the rooftop restaurant, rooms are only cleaned upon request, there is hand sanitizer everywhere, and everything — robes, pens, face-masks — is wrapped in plastic.</p><p>A similar standard was met at the equally new — and luxuriously resort-like — <a href="https://www.sixsenses.com/en/resorts/kocatas-mansions-istanbul">Six Senses Kocatas Mansions</a> in Istanbul's upscale Sariyer district. Housed in a pair of meticulously restored Ottoman-era palaces dating to the late 19th century, the 43-room property features sprawling hillside gardens out back, the azure Bosphorus out front — where the water is clean enough to actually take a swim.</p><div type="image" title="Six Senses Kocatas Mansions" height="1665" width="2221" msid="77922349" hostid="261"></div><p>With its neighboring estates and a quaint nearby village, the hotel feels a world away from Istanbul's packed center 45 minutes to the south. But safety still reigns supreme here. Temperature checks, face masks, hand sanitizer, and a la carte menus at half-full restaurants are standard. Considering the Six Senses is new and not extremely busy, these protocols felt effortless.</p><p>Clearly a more concerted effort was required five hours south in Izmir, where I stayed at the <a href="https://www.swissotel.com/hotels/izmir/">Swissotel Bukey Efes</a>, a massive waterfront resort with 457 rooms and suites, multiple restaurants, and a giant swimming pool. The place was packed — mostly with vacation-desperate Turks, but also with Europeans in need of some summer sun. </p><p>I'll concede, I missed the massive breakfast buffet — replaced by myriad servers shrouded behind plastic barriers. But it felt like a small sacrifice to be in a hotel — and city and nation — where it essentially felt like life had gone back to normal.</p><h2>Some Turkish-Americans were shopping for real estate</h2><p>I ended my trip in Bodrum, on Turkey's legendary "Aegean Riviera," which was hopping. Like in Izmir, most folks were Turks, enjoying elegant resorts and posh private villas. But there was <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/destinations/2020/08/06/covid-19-travel-where-can-americans-vacation-internationally/5517408002/">also a strong contingent of Americans</a>, eager to escape the endless stateside quarantines and lockdowns — including many (particularly Turkish-Americans) shopping for real estate.</p><p>"We have seen a dramatic increase in inquiries from the States in the last three months, which is very encouraging," Mihane Miki Sadiku, owner and director of local real estate firm <a href="http://www.yalihaninternational.com/">Yalihan International</a>, told Insider. "Bodrum's housing stock is limited and it is getting harder to approve building permits, which is why we are seeing property values increasing."</p><div type="image" title="bodrum meal" height="1134" width="1511" msid="77922350" hostid="261"></div><p>Our time in Bodrum was spent at the five-room, family-owned, city-center hotel — <a href="https://www.instagram.com/halabodrum/">the Hala Bodrum</a> — which is set in a traditional Turkish stone house with a beautiful garden heaving with citrus trees. The owner, Ayca Aras, also runs <a href="https://www.instagram.com/polebodrum/?hl=en">Pole Bodrum,</a> a fun and fitness-minded pole dancing studio.</p><p>At a moment of increasing Islamist conservatism across Turkey, everything about Bodrum felt refreshingly open and free. The bars and restaurants — Port and Old Town — were bustling with visitors, mostly covered in face masks and reasonably socially distanced. And folks who didn't follow the rules received a stern talking-to from local police.</p><p>Back in New York, I was immediately struck by the contrast between lively Turkey and the grim vibe pulsing through post-lockdown Manhattan.</p><p>"Corona was really a game-changing scenario for us and we are already preparing and taking precautions for next year," Güler said. In the meantime, "we are open for business and still waiting for Americans to show up."</p>
