<ul><li><keyword id="19895203" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="electric-vehicles" source="keywords">Electric vehicles</keyword> (EVs) are gaining popularity worldwide</li><li>However, concerns remain about their environmental impact</li><li> <keyword id="21881868" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="alternative-fuel" source="keywords">Alternative fuel</keyword> vehicles like hydrogen fuel cells and biofuels are some more alternatives we can tap into</li></ul> Electric vehicles or EVs are in their prime right now, with the demand crossing an all-time high. A trend noticeable around the world, EVs are not only becoming increasingly popular but also fairly affordable. Slowly but surely EVs are overcoming the challenges that crossed them — design, features, safety, and most importantly range. A major credit to this trend can be given to consumer acceptance, policy backing, and improving infrastructure. However, there is a downside to EVs as well. Having featured multiple EVs with our series<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCR3PaYxcmk&amp;t=1s" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank"> Short Spin, </a>I developed a strong reference point. This made me wonder why are we so heavily reliant on them. Over its life cycle, EVs cannot be termed as particularly environmentally friendly, which has been their main selling point over the past few decades. <h2>The ‘Red’ side of EVs</h2> There is a bit of red within the go-green agenda that EV manufacturers push. EVs as a whole do come with benefits like low maintenance, improved efficiency and ultimately lower fuel emissions. However, <keyword id="21357488" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="EV-production" source="keywords">EV production</keyword> and disposal can have detrimental effects on the natural environment. Here are some socio-ecological concerns over EVs: 1. High carbon footprint in battery production: EV battery production is energy-intensive and often relies on electricity from fossil fuels, leading to a high initial carbon footprint. This is elaborated in a story recently published by Earth Org. 2. Resource constraints and ethical concerns: Particularly with the extensive mining of cobalt and other minerals for EVs, there has been a global outcry. Limited availability of critical minerals like lithium, cobalt, and nickel, shady mining practices long work hours, unsafe work environments, and use of child labour in underdeveloped parts of the world have raised several ethical issues around the sustainability of EVs. This issue can be explored further in this essay by Al Jazeera. 3. Recycling and end-of-life challenges: EV battery recycling is currently inefficient, costly, and poses significant environmental risks, with a huge amount of batteries ending up in landfills. 4. Manufacturing costs and economic barriers: High production costs, especially for batteries, make EVs more expensive than conventional vehicles and require significant investments in new manufacturing facilities and supply chains. 5. Supply chain and geopolitical risks: Critical mineral resources necessary for EV production are concentrated in a few countries. This leads to vulnerabilities in the complex supply chain and often risks disruptions due to geopolitical tensions, trade conflicts, or natural disasters. China as of today controls 83% of EV battery production in the world, with a major stronghold on the supply chain. While I am in no way suggesting to drop out of EVs, I believe sticking to just one alternative risks replicating the same mistake we did for ICE vehicles. So, what are the alternatives? <h2>The alternates fuel vehicles (<keyword id="23193800" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AFVs" source="keywords">AFVs</keyword>)</h2> AFVs are a growing segment of the automotive industry that utilize fuels other than traditional gasoline or diesel. These vehicles offer similar potential benefits such as reduced greenhouse gas emissions, improved air quality, and reduced dependence on fossil fuels. While EVs are also a form of AFVs, here we will list out other major alternatives like hydrogen fuel and biofuel options. Hydrogen fuel cells: Convert hydrogen gas into electricity, emitting only water vapour. Currently, <keyword id="19906788" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Toyota" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Toyota" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Toyota">Toyota</keyword> and Hyundai are the only hydrogen-based cars in the Indian market. Hydrogen internal combustion engines: These vehicles use hydrogen as a fuel in modified combustion engines. While road-legal vehicles for this fuel type aren’t out, BMW with hydrogen 7 is working on a prototype. Ethanol: This is a renewable fuel made from plant materials, commonly mixed with gasoline. In America, Ford F-150 Flex-Fuel and Chevrolet Silverado Flex-Fuel are utilizing this technology. Biodiesel and renewable diesel: Derived from vegetable oils, animal fats, or recycled grease, these fuel types can be used in diesel engines. Compressed Natural Gas (CNG): Perhaps the most famous alternative for cabbies in Delhi, CNG is in popular demand. Technically it is used in specially modified internal combustion engines, primarily for lower emissions. Propane (Liquefied Petroleum Gas, LPG): A byproduct of natural gas processing and crude oil refining, used in internal combustion engines. As technology continues to advance, these AFVs are becoming more accessible and affordable, making them a promising option for sustainable transportation. EVs are not the only options for alternative fuel — make way for hydrogen and bio-fuel

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Truckers are sounding the alarm on skyrocketing <keyword id="12224498" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="diesel-prices" source="Orion">diesel prices</keyword>.</li><li>A <keyword id="11939549" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="trucking" source="Orion">trucking</keyword> company owner went viral after warning prices could cause major supply-chain issues.</li></ul>A Facebook <a href="https://www.facebook.com/austin.smith.7161953/posts/5120293694721351">post</a> from the owner of a Texas trucking company went viral last week after he warned that skyrocketing diesel prices could have longterm consequences for the US supply-chain.Austin Smith, owner of Iron River Express, said it has cost him over $20,000 a week to keep his three trucks running."If something drastic doesn't change in the next few weeks/months, I promise you, you'll see empty shelves everywhere you look," Smith wrote in a post that was shared nearly 290,000 times. "You'll see chaos as people fight for the basic necessities of everyday life."Smith did not respond to a request for comment from Insider in time for publication.Insider spoke with five truckers who warned that the industry could be at a breaking point. The drivers say they've had to get creative in recent months as they work to turn a profit while spending thousands at the pump.Richard Resek, a trucker based out of ports in New York and New Jersey, told Insider he's turning off his truck and rolling down his window instead of using air conditioning during long summer nights. He also plots out gas stations with the cheapest fuel prices.<h2>Running at a loss</h2>Diesel prices have surged over 76% in the past year. Last month, <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/commodities/diesel-prices-soar-supply-crisis-gas-station-rationing-inflation-2022-5">Insider reported</a> that the diesel market is facing its worst crisis since the 1970s. Prices are at a record $5.75, according to <a href="https://gasprices.aaa.com/">data from AAA. </a> For truckers like Resek, that means they're spending as much as $1,700 refueling their trucks each day.Nick, a trucker who owns a small carrier in Maryland, told Insider he's had to take loads at a loss."I have the option not to run my fleet at all, but I care more about keeping my drivers busy," said Nick, who prefers to go only by his first name due to a pending lawsuit. "Drivers are the most important asset and sometimes that means I have to accept loads that are not in my favor."Nick detailed an instance in April when he woke to find that thieves had siphoned over $1,000 worth of fuel out of his truck.<div type="image" title="truck driver/trucking" height="3445" width="4594" msid="92136448" hostid="261"></div>The trucking industry offsets diesel prices through a fuel surcharge, which is <a href="https://www.plslogistics.com/blog/what-are-fuel-surcharges-costing-you#:~:text=A%20national%20fuel%20surcharge%20is,cover%20the%20cost%20of%20operations.">calculated</a> through a base rate that is usually added to a shipper's freight bill. But, Resek said drivers typically never sees a breakdown of the costs from brokers or carriers — meaning there are instances when companies keep the fuel surcharge for themselves.<h2>Closing shop</h2>Shauntai Robinson, the owner of Mid-Carolina <keyword id="11894924" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="transportation" source="Orion">Transportation</keyword>, told Insider that the elevated fuel prices will likely push new business owners out of the industry after a <a href="https://www.thetrucker.com/trucking-news/truckload-authority/trends-in-trucking/surging-ahead-number-of-new-trucking-companies-shattering-records">record</a> numbers of trucking companies opened in 2021."The industry is overrun with new carriers that don't know how to quote a rate," Robinson said. "They're so focused on competing for a load that their quotes are unrealistic. They won't be able to sustain that."Two truckers told Insider they are considering leaving the industry due to fuel prices."We're all just trying to stay afloat and at times I have to stop and ask myself if it's worth it," Resek, who has been driving for seven years, said. Truckers warn skyrocketing diesel prices are making US supply-chain and trucking industry unsustainable

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The Energy Information Administration has warned that US diesel fuel reserves are dwindling rapidly.</li><li>The Jones Act, which is more than a century old, prevents foreign vessels from transporting goods between two US ports. </li></ul>The US is facing a worsening diesel supply crisis, and a century-old law is standing in the way of easing the crunch.<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2022/10/30/diesel-market-in-perfect-storm-as-prices-surge-and-supplies-dwindle.html">Diesel reserve stockpiles for this time of year</a> are at their lowest point in decades. And at one point last month, it reached the equivalent of 25 days' worth of supply, as inventory stood at 106 million barrels and demand was at 4.2 million barrels per day, according to the Energy Information Administration.The shortage stems from the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic when gas demand crashed and refiners pulled back operations, Matt Smith, lead oil analyst at Kpler, told Insider.Trucks that run on diesel continued to deliver goods around the country, so consumption of the fuel remained elevated despite a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/america-diesel-shortage-crisis-energy-analyst-explains-europe-russia-fuel-2022-10">slowdown in refinery production,</a> which has resulted in a gradual decline in inventories for more than two years."The double whammy is that, as demand has picked up post-pandemic, the US is exporting more, well over a million barrels a day," Smith said. "And the triple whammy is the sanctions coming onto Russia's diesel exports early next year, so the global backdrop is tight supply."<h2>Waiving the Jones Act</h2>To Smith, the diesel shortage could ease if government officials waived the Jones Act, or the Merchant Marine Act of 1920. The law maintains that cargo transported between two US ports must be brought on vessels primarily built and crewed by Americans. But the number of tankers that meet these specifications is limited, which makes the cost of using them roughly double that of a foreign ship. The additional expenses make Jones Act tankers less attractive for traders.That means New England, which faces an acute <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/commodities/oil-prices-diesel-crisis-shortage-eia-biden-energy-europe-russia-2022-10">diesel shortage</a>, must either import supplies from overseas or from the US Gulf Coast. But the Jones Act makes it too costly to move diesel from the Gulf Coast to the East Coast, Smith said, exacerbating regional challenges and pushing buyers to turn to cheaper options from abroad. "In a rather bizarre turn of events, the US Gulf Coast ships diesel to all manner of countries, but not to the US East Coast," he said. "As for the US East Coast, it is left to import from as far afield as India and Qatar."Smith noted that even though a broad suspension of the Jones Act would improve the diesel crisis, it has yet to be repealed because it's a "political hot potato."The Department of Homeland Security told CNBC recently that Jones Act waivers are granted on a case by case basis, and that the mandate is critical to maintaining the strength of US shipbuilding and maritime industries.The DHS last approved a waiver for <a href="https://www.dhs.gov/news/2022/09/28/statement-secretary-mayorkas-approval-jones-act-waiver-puerto-rico">Puerto Rico</a> in September for an emergency response to Hurricane Fiona.

Here's how waiving a century-old law can help fix America's diesel crisis

Utility vehicles major <keyword id="6357096" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mahindra-Mahindra">Mahindra &amp; Mahindra</keyword> (<keyword id="46869" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="MM">M&amp;M</keyword>) on Thursday said it is recalling 1,577 units of its SUV Thar with <keyword id="10704282" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="diesel-powertrain">diesel powertrain</keyword> to replace faulty camshaft, an engine part. The Mumbai-based auto major said it would undertake proactive inspection and replacement of camshaft on a batch of 1,577 units of <keyword id="10703974" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="thar-diesel-variants">Thar diesel variants</keyword>, manufactured between September 7 and December 25, 2020. "A machine setting error at the supplier's plant, on specific dates, may have affected camshafts in some engines of the diesel Thar," M&amp;M said in a regulatory filing. Keeping with the company's stringent quality standards and exercising abundant caution, it has proactively engaged in this limited recall and offered inspection and subsequent rectification, <keyword id="6370553" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="free">free</keyword> of cost, the automaker noted. The company said the affected Thar customers will be individually contacted by the company. As an endeavour to ensure a hassle-free experience for its customers, the company is proactively carrying out this activity, it added. This action is also in compliance with SIAM's voluntary code on vehicle recall, M&amp;M said. The new version of Thar was launched on October 2 last year. The model comes in two trims -- AX and LX -- with both petrol and diesel powertrain options. All the variants of new Thar come with a four-wheel drive set-up. Cadillac took the wraps off of the new 2021 Escalade at an event in Los Angeles on Tuesday, kicking off the fifth generation of its flagship luxury SUV. The redesigned Escalade represents the first new model since the fourth generation was introduced <a href="https://media.cadillac.com/media/intl/en/cadillac/news.detail.html/content/Pages/news/intl/en/2018/cadillac/09-04-escalade-20-years-on-the-road.html">for 2015</a>. The 2021 Escalade comes with some new tech, a roomier interior, and refreshed engine options. It'll also go on sale in late 2020 in North America, according to Cadillac.Chief among the 2021 Escalade's notable updates is the inclusion of Super Cruise, GM's driver-assistance technology akin to Tesla's Autopilot. Super Cruise, by Cadillac's claims, allows for hands-free operation on more than 200,000 miles of highway in the US and Canada using GPS, lidar map data, and a system of cameras and radar sensors. Super Cruise is already available on Cadillac's CT6 sedan, but the 2021 Escalade sports <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cadillacs-hands-free-super-cruise-system-is-coming-to-the-escalade-2020-1">an updated system</a> with new features like automated lane changes. Other new technology includes a stereo system with what Cadillac calls "conversation enhancement," where microphones embedded throughout the cabin pick up what passengers say and broadcast it to other parts of the car through a 36-speaker system. That feature may very well come in handy, considering the already-huge Escalade is even bigger for the 2021 model year. A larger overall size and wheelbase allowed Cadillac to increase third-row legroom by 10 inches and cargo space behind the third row by 68%, with the standard SUV measuring 17.6 feet long and the bigger ESV clocking in at 18.9 feet. Propelling one version of the Escalade down the road will be a 6.2-liter V8 rated at 420 horsepower and 460 foot-pounds of torque, matching the stats of the 2020 model. But the 2021 Escalade will be the first generation to offer an available 3.0-liter turbo-diesel engine, producing a rated 277 horsepower and the same peak torque as the standard V8 - just at a much lower rpm.Plus, the newest version of the Escalade receives an independent rear suspension for a cushier ride - a feature one of its main rivals, the Lincoln Navigator, has <a href="https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1114982_9-things-you-need-to-know-about-the-2018-lincoln-navigator">long touted over it</a>. Closing that gap is important, too. GM currently derives 72% of its profits in North America from large pickups and SUVs, according to <a href="https://www.autonews.com/sales/gm-living-large">estimates from Barclays</a>, and those types of vehicles deliver profit margins as high as 30%, or more than $15,000 apiece - a boon for manufacturers as consumers increasingly demand larger vehicles over small hatchbacks and sedans. And if the new Escalade is one thing, it certainly is large.

It's a four-second shot they could have made entirely out of CGI, but instead, they spent eight months planning the stunt with real vehicles.The "Fast" crew broke down the shot into two parts and built this track to carry the car through the window and into the back of this truck. Then they programmed two motion-controlled cameras to perfectly sync, and then stitched it all into one continuous shot.This was just one of many over-the-top stunts in "<keyword id="6812889" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="F9">F9</keyword>," which were all done with as little CGI as possible.<keyword id="205951" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Justin-Lin">Justin Lin</keyword>: We see cars every day. So anytime you go to kind of a CG option, if you're just off by a tiny bit, the brain knows it's not real.Narrator: And spoilers ahead for "F9." Car flips are a common stunt in the "Fast" franchise, but for "F9," the production team needed to take this move a step further when Letty uses a magnetized car to latch onto an SUV during the film's climactic chase in Tbilisi, Georgia.Yeah, that's right. That's a car that attaches to another car and then flips, without CGI. To get this to work, the team had to reconfigure Letty's car so it could tow the second vehicle and then release it at the right moment.First, stunt coordinator Andy Gill and his team removed the trunk. Then they replaced it with a steel cage so the SUV's wheel would lock into place.To make it look like the SUV is being sucked into the trunk by a magnet, the crew built a ramp behind Letty's car so the SUV could easily hop onto it.A weighted overhead cable system then helped with the final backflip. When the SUV hit the end of the line, the cables yanked it backwards.Now that the crew could attach and flip one car from a moving vehicle, how about two?That's what happens when Dom pulls two SUVs to his magnetized car before repelling them. One SUV survives its jump. The other SUV leaps in the air thanks to a hidden ramp built by the stunt team. And that SUV is destroyed when it hits this small car followed by this parked van.Andy Gill: And then that car was pinned down on a big steel plate in the ground, so it wasn't going to move.Narrator: To stop the SUV's momentum, the van also needed a wall inside.Gill: I just had effects build a steel wall. If here's your car, right here is the firewall all the way up to the roof, and it put kickers back so you can't get through it. Then it blows through that second car and gets halfway through and hits that steel plate. And that's what turns it over.Narrator: Cables just weren't enough for this stunt, when a car is flipped over on its side. While this elaborate flip could have been completely CG, Gill found a way to do it practically. The key for this scene was something called a flipper. Basically, the car's placed on a giant pad with two hydraulic arms that extend and cause the pad to flip up, launching the car along with it.And that henchman you see here didn't actually get hit by this car. To flip the car without hurting anyone, they shot the scene twice. The first shot had the performer standing on the car, but there was no flip. In the second, they flipped the car from the same position, but with no actor. These two shots were then merged together in postproduction.Magnet-charged stunts didn't just involve other cars. For this moment, it was all about kitchen appliances. Unlike the flipper move, it was possible to have extras in this shot, but that added another risk factor. Gill: Yeah, you don't want to be in front of one, I can tell you that.[chuckles]Narrator: Before placing any extras, Gill used sandbags to see how safe each mark was. And location was everything.Gill: We put a lot of time and effort into picking the right store for that. Had big windows, the sidewalk was just right, we didn't have trees or telephone poles in the way for them to come out.Narrator: Launching the appliances involved first welding a tube into each one. That tube was then inserted into another tube filled with compressed air. Once that air was released, the appliance would shoot out like a cannonball.Gill: So, as the car's coming up, I would say, "Three, two, one, now," and we'd videotape it all, and I'd put white marks on the ground so I'd know exactly when I said "one" where the car was and then where those machines were coming out.By doing all the tests, we knew that there was a big brick wall between windows. It was going to be tight, it was going to be a lot of stuff coming out, broken glass and all that. But they could hunker down, and people in the shot just looks good.Narrator: Dodging washing machines is hard, but what about explosives?During the first big chase of "F9," Dom and his brother, Jake, try to outpace each other on jungle roads filled with land mines. Filming on location with real explosives meant dealing with unpredictable weather and smoke-induced visibility issues.Instead of using the overgrown muddy jungle roads on location in Thailand, the crew built their own roads out of decomposed granite, a much more suitable material for racing. In the end, they only created about a half mile of new roads, but the camera crew, using helicopters, drones, and off-road buggies, could make it feel much bigger on camera.Gill: So it's short sections that we'd use over and over, and we would film in different directions, so it looks different.Narrator: The crew had to consider even the tiniest details to keep the drivers safe. To make sure fires didn't start near any of the drivers, the crew wet down the mulch that flew up in the air with each boom, and they welded steel plates under the driver and passenger sides of each car to provide an extra layer of protection between the passengers and any of the 30 real mortars planted in the road.The stunt drivers also limited their speeds to below 50 miles per hour, even though in the movie they're supposed to be going at least 80.Gill: A lot of times, we're not going as fast as you would think in a chase, but it looks a lot faster 'cause we're usually in confined areas. Where you really want to speed it up is when you have big, wide-open areas and there's not really anything relative to your speed. So you could be doing 120, and it doesn't look fast. Narrator: To ensure that the main cars looked fast, other cars had to slow down.Gill: We'll do wipes with cars that are only going 10 miles an hour, so you're going by them really fast.Narrator: And the climax of this sequence is even more extreme.This is a moment when Dom and Letty jump from one cliff to another, attached to land by just one rope. Even for a "Fast" movie, this was risky. But the crew managed to create the scene practically with just a little help from CGI.They filmed in a quarry with a 60- to 70-foot drop-off to imitate the cliff's edge. On that edge, they reconstructed the end of the rickety wooden bridge as well as a steep ramp. So the car really did jump.Gill: We could jump, hit that post, and then land still on the road.Narrator: Careful camera placement obscuring the quarry made it look much higher on screen. The swing was CGI, but the swing and eventual landing still needed to try to follow the rules of physics.So Gill first conducted a toy-car test for the swing and landing, like he did with many stunts in the film. Here, he tied one to a string and ran it over a table.Gill: The toy car came off like that. It fell really nicely for a while. And as soon as that caught, what happened, instead of just swinging like this, it snapped it around almost upside down this way, and then back and around.Narrator: For the landing, they used a real car rigged to complex cables strategically placed on the hood and around the back wheels. As the car got closer to its mark, another cable attached to the nose stopped the front of the car from going any further. The forward momentum then swung the back around, hitting its mark perfectly.All of these stunts were extreme, but nothing compared to the extensive chase involving what may be the franchise's most ambitious custom build yet.This is the Armadillo, a 14-foot-high, 26-ton, three-section armored monster. This beast of a vehicle had to navigate narrow streets while doing everything from driving on its back to sliding down a huge cliff.Between this and all the magnet stunts, it's no wonder the entire Tbilisi chase took nearly a year to bring to life.Four of those months were dedicated to custom-building two versions of the Armadillo, one for driving it like a normal truck, another for making it drivable when it's turned upside down.Lin: Those trucks are really, really heavy, as we found out.Narrator: Instead of building new roads, they worked with what was already there, first by carefully selecting the run-up area. These are the portions of road where the cars in a sequence can gather speed before getting to the piece of road they're filming on.Because it was so massive, the Armadillo needed a lot of room to get up to speed, and it also needed a run-out area, or extra road after the shot ends so nobody has to slam their brakes and kill the momentum.Even though the Armadillo was fast enough, Gill found that getting right up close to it could make it look even faster.Because the Armadillo is so heavily armored, the crew used all the tools they had in new and imaginative ways. For example, they could make a dent thanks to the flipper, which was just off camera launching cars over here.And the parked cars seen at these two angles were attached to cables on the ground that, when cut loose, could be pulled right into the Armadillo's path.Because so many parts of these impressive feats were done in-camera, every little detail needed to be laid out far in advance. But it's the experimentation and commitment to practical effects that make every flip and crash feel so visceral.That's what has always set this franchise apart from its humble beginnings.Crew: Good job, man. Nice job.Lin: I think that when you do things practically, when two elements interact, it almost defies physics because you can't mathematically predict it because there's so many variables. And there's something very visceral about that that we connect to.Gill: I have my toy cars all the time, and Justin's eyes light up every time I walk in with them because he knows we're going to play.

How 'Fast 9' pulled off 7 extreme stunts with real cars

"We are expecting [oil] prices to go towards $100 into the year end, and really trade into the $110s and $120s for most of next year," Sen told <a href="https://twitter.com/bsurveillance/status/1587050604765057024?cxt=HHwWgMC4mbqHq4YsAAAA">Bloomberg</a> on Monday, adding that a cold winter poses the greatest upward pressure on prices. Oil inventories stay extremely low, Sen noted, because many US refineries remain out of commission and the country isn't able to produce enough inventory, while ongoing <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/french-refinery-strikes-continue-two-sites-2022-10-24/">French refinery strikes</a> have added to supply pressures. <ul class="summary-list"><li>I tested a very, very well equipped 2020 <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/ram">Ram</a> 1500 Rebel <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/pickup-trucks">pickup truck</a>, an off-road optimized version of the truck that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ram-1500-pickup-truck-business-insider-car-year-winner-2019-11">captured our Car of the Year award in 2019</a>.</li><li>My Rebel had a potent 3.0-liter turbodiesel engine that serves up 260 horsepower but an earthshaking 480 pound-feet of torque.</li><li>My tester also featured a menacing, blacked-out exterior package.</li><li>The <keyword id="4560671" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Ram-1500">Ram 1500</keyword> is a great pickup, but the <keyword id="6356109" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="diesel">diesel</keyword> Rebel is something special.</li></ul>Here's how the sequence usually goes for me when it comes to reviewing full-size <keyword id="862838" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="pickup-trucks">pickup trucks</keyword>. First, I sample the regular gas-powered version, and because I like big pickups, I often end up a happy guy. But then I spend some time with the diesel-engined model, and I forget all about the gas-burner.Diesel and pickups! Two great tastes that go great together! A beautiful friendship!Choose your cliché, but the bottom line is that diesel power, for obvious reasons, makes sense for large trucks — especially if you intend to do any sort of serious work, haul heavy loads, or tow more than a modest camper or trailer. <keyword id="17786" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="60" keywordseo="ram">Ram</keyword> makes a dandy full-size pickup. The Ram 1500 was Business Insider's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ram-1500-pickup-truck-business-insider-car-year-winner-2019-11#:~:text=The%20RAM%201500%20pickup%20truck,of%20the%20Year%20%2D%20Business%20Insider&amp;text=The%20word%20%22Insider%22.%22.">2019 Car of the Year</a>, and it was a vehicle that impressed us mightily when tested on both the East and West Coasts. But the diesel is even better if you can imagine improving on greatness, as I found out when I borrowed the 2020 edition of the pickup, in a handsome "Diamond Black Crystal Pearl-Coat" paint job, for a week over the summer.<h2>Rebel, Rebel ... I love you so!</h2><div type="image" title="RAM 1500 Diesel" height="1385" width="1847" msid="78218940" hostid="261"></div>And what a pickup it was! The Base Crew Cab 4x4 was $47,990, but many options — including the "Rebel Level 2" equipment group ($3,000) and a $5,000 diesel motor — brought my as-tested price to $71,305. A tech package that added heated seats and a heated steering wheel also tacked $3,000 on the sticker, and assorted other goodies embellished the Ram by $200 to $500 here and there.But that's the usual story full-size pickups, which are best thought of these days as nearly infinitely option-able, yielding some wide price ranges for the manufacturers that sell everything from bare-bones work trucks to luxurious half-tons.<div type="image" title="RAM 1500 Diesel" height="1310" width="1747" msid="78218945" hostid="261"></div>Allow me to explain why I was testing the Ram 1500 in the first place: gardening! We sort of amped- p our summertime gardening game this year and had to make a journey of modest distance to a center in New Jersey that we'd heard about from our gardening underground. An SUV wasn't going to cut it; we needed a proper pickup with the proper bed. And as you can see from the photo above, we made good use of it.<div type="image" title="RAM 1500 Diesel" height="1500" width="2000" msid="78218947" hostid="261"></div>The Ram 1500 I tested came with both a tonneau cover, which was easily folded back, and a bed-separator — a great feature that allowed me to divide the box into one area for heavy bags of soil and one for plants. Using the divider to create a spot for the plants close to the cab meant that I could return home at highway speed without worrying about the load shifting, and I didn't have to employ the Ram 1500's tie-down points.The truck also had the useful RamBox "saddlebags," a pair of lockable storage compartments at the bed's flanks. I didn't need them, but the feature does use the interior of the Ram 1500's body panels to create some additional capacity, where otherwise an owner might be looking at a third-party setup to tote tools or gear.<h2>Trading horsepower for torque, torque, and more torque</h2><div type="image" title="RAM 1500 Diesel" height="1500" width="2000" msid="78218950" hostid="261"></div>The 3.0-liter, turbodiesel V6 makes 260 horsepower but — get this — 480 pound-feet of torque.That translates into monumental pulling power. The Rebel can tow more than 12,500 pounds, all while putting up some tasty fuel-economy numbers: 21 mpg in the city, 29 on the highway, and 24 combined. (Gas-engined trucks offer a 395-horsepower V8 and a 305-horsepower V6.) The Ram's eight-speed automatic handles all of that torque rather gracefully, piping it to the capable four-wheel-drive system. But it doesn't alter the Rebel diesel's demeanor, which put me in the mind of a small freight train when I was tooling down the highway.The truck can go from a standstill to 60 mph in about eight seconds, and when you sum all this up, you see what the Rebel is all about: bold off-roading, an answer to the Ford F-150 Raptor.The knobby Goodyear tires were a giveaway, but the overall packaging of my Rebel test truck suggested that one could apply the vehicle to a greater variety of tasks than just trail-busting — crammed as it was with infotainment tech, connectivity, premium appointments, and that dashing black paint job.<div type="image" title="RAM 1500 Diesel" height="1500" width="2000" msid="78218952" hostid="261"></div>The blacked-out treatment went further than the paint: the $525 exterior package brought a black grille with black framing, a black Ram badge, and black 18-inch wheels.As far as off-roading goes, I could point out that black shows dirt, but the Rebel looks so dang cool that I doubt it would stay dirty for long, if ever. This is a pickup that wants to pay frequent visits to the car wash.<div type="image" title="RAM 1500 Diesel" height="1500" width="2000" msid="78218954" hostid="261"></div>Note, however, that there are textured running boards, making getting in and out of the lifted pickup much easier, but also making it possible to scrape mud off your boots before soiling the primo cab.<h2> A high-end interior and a high-end verdict</h2><div type="image" title="RAM 1500 Diesel" height="1503" width="2000" msid="78218957" hostid="261"></div>The all-black exterior theme continues inside the Rebel, with plush front bucket seats and a comfy, capacious rear configuration. A dual-pane sunroof brightens the cabin considerably, but it's a $1,500 extra. My test truck was chock full o' tech, starting with the 8.4-inch central touchscreen running Fiat Chrysler's underrated Uconnect infotainment system. This setup handles everything from Bluetooth and USB device connectivity to GPS navigation (with USB ports dedicated to charging). I enjoyed the dulcet tones of a 19-speaker Harman-Kardon premium audio system and had Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in reserve.<div type="image" title="RAM 1500 Diesel" height="1503" width="2000" msid="78218961" hostid="261"></div>The Ram 1500 was the best full-size pick we drove, off all the half-tons on the market, in the period from about 2015 until last year, when the new Ram grabbed top prize in our Car of Year competition. I had no complaints about the gas-engined V8 I tested in 2019, but the diesel V6 was something special. If you aren't driving fast all the time, you grow to love the succulent surge of torque that an awesome diesel produces, and the visual presentation of the Ram 1500 Rebel intensifies that impression.Simply put, the Ram 1500 Rebel diesel is addictive to drive and addictive to look at, in a totally badass sort of way. I think it shook up the gardening center on that day I visited — Darth Vader unsettling the 'burbs.It's worth pointing out that although the truck has attitude galore, it also gets the job done. This imitating pickup carried flowers and potting soil home, safely and it style. And that says more about the modern, full-size pickup truck world these days than just about anything else.

REVIEW: The Ram 1500 Rebel proves that when it comes to pickup trucks, diesel is better

But the one that is the easiest of the hard things is crude oil, because it's a flexible market, and you can get other supplies," Yergin <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/video/2022/04/25/europes-energy-crisis-dan-yergin-discusses-crude-oil-and-natural-gas.html">told CNBC</a> Monday, speaking about the bloc's pending decision."The hardest thing, of course, is natural gas," the S&amp;P Global vice president said, pointing to Germany's high reliance on Russian gas imports as a stumbling block.Some member states have called for the EU to reduce and eventually end oil purchases from Russia, because the payments are <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/mar/09/russian-gas-oil-vladimir-putin-war-europe-eu-official">seen as helping fund the Ukraine war</a>. Germany's purchases of Russian energy products are estimated to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/germanys-unions-employers-oppose-eu-ban-russian-gas-ukraine-war-2022-4">add about $220 million</a> to the Kremlin's balance sheet per day.But a total phaseout could have drastic effects. If Russia is cut out, the gap in the crude market would be 2 million barrels, so the bloc just has to figure out how to make that up, Yergin said. "<keyword id="11897120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="europe" source="Orion">Europe</keyword> gets about 3.5-3.8 million barrels a day from Russia. A substantial part of that is products like diesel and jet fuel, and things like that. So it's really that 2 million barrels a day that you got to focus on," he said.The US government can be relied upon to help with issues around supply, Yergin pointed out.
