But why are we witnessing this unexpected switch, and what does it spell for the future of driving? <h2>Waning EV enthusiasm</h2>A recent Park+ survey reported that 51% of Indian EV car owners expressed a desire to return to internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. This statistic — despite the study’s limited sample size of just 500 EV owners — is certainly surprising, given the evident success of India's push toward electrification with the attractive FAME and EMPS schemes. This isn’t even a special case; a similar survey revealed that 29% of EV-owners shared the same sentiment internationally — perhaps not that large of a number, but certainly not an unnoticeable one either. In the first half of March, petrol sales had fallen 1.4 per cent and diesel 10.2 per cent year-on-year. Consumption of petrol in April first half was 14.6 per cent more than COVID-marred April 1-15, 2021 and almost 128 per cent more than in the same period of 2020. Diesel consumption was up 24.3 per cent over April 1-15, 2021 and 127 per cent higher than in the same month of 2020. With the continued opening of the aviation sector, India's overall passenger traffic at airports inched closer to pre-COVID levels. Reflecting the trend, jet fuel (ATF) demand jumped 14 per cent to 2,84,600 tonnes during the first half of April when compared to the same period last year. It was 35 per cent higher than April 1-15, 2021 and 467.6 per cent more than the same period in 2020. Month-on-month sales however fell 3.8 per cent. India is enjoying steady growth, with support from the services sector as well as the industrial side of the economy. The country's oil demand was supported by strong industrial activity, industry officials said. Diesel sales jump on agricultural demand

The central government has reduced <keyword id="20442280" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="windfall-tax" source="keywords">windfall tax</keyword> on crude petroleum, according to a government notification. The special additional <keyword id="20253895" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="excise-duty" source="keywords">excise duty</keyword> (<keyword id="20211971" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="saed" source="keywords">SAED</keyword>) on crude petroleum has been slashed from Rs 9,600 per tonne to Rs 8,400 per tonne. India slashes windfall tax on crude petroleum

India's <keyword id="252144" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fuel-demand" source="Orion">fuel demand</keyword> fell in the first half of March after posting record growth in the previous month, preliminary industry data showed on Thursday. Fuel sales soared to the highest levels in February on the back of robust demand from the agriculture sector as well as transport picking up after the winter lull. March saw the seasonal slowdown kicking in with a rise in temperatures. <keyword id="3146552" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="petrol-sales" source="Orion">Petrol sales</keyword> decreased by 1.4 per cent to 1.22 million tonnes in the first half of March when compared with the same period of last year. Sales fell 0.5 per cent month-on-month, the data showed. Diesel, the most consumed fuel in the country, saw demand slip 10.2 per cent to 3.18 million tonnes from March 1 to 15 when compared with 3.54 million tonnes of sales in the same period a year back. Month-on-month the demand was down 4.6 per cent. During the first half of February, petrol consumption had jumped by almost 18 per cent year-on-year while <keyword id="998651" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="diesel-sales" source="Orion">diesel sales</keyword> were up nearly 25 per cent. The consumption of petrol in the first half of March was 16.4 per cent more than the Covid-marred first half of March 2021 and almost 23 per cent more than in the same period of 2020. Diesel consumption was up 11.5 per cent over the first half of March 2021 and 20.2 per cent higher than in 2020. While cold conditions slowed truck movements in January, the onset of spring revived demand in February. With the continued opening of the aviation sector, India's overall passenger traffic at airports inched closer to pre-Covid levels. Reflecting the trend, jet fuel (ATF) demand jumped 19.2 per cent to 2,94,900 tonnes during the first half of March when compared to the same period last year. It was 35.6 per cent higher than in March 2021 but 8.2 per cent lower than in March 2020. Month-on-month sales were almost flat. Sources said while domestic air travel is back to pre-Covid levels, international traffic is lagging because of continued restrictions in some countries. India's recovery has continued to gain momentum in recent months but has been accompanied by elevated inflation. This slowed the momentum a bit. The country's oil demand had been rising steadily since the easing of COVID-19 restrictions. Cooking gas LPG sales fell 9.7 per cent year-on-year to 1.18 million tonnes from March 1-15. LPG consumption was 7.1 per cent higher than in March 2021 and 3.6 per cent more than in March 2020. Month-on-month, the demand dropped 15.10 when compared to 1.39 million tonnes of LPG consumption during February 1-15, the data showed. Petrol, diesel sales drop in first half of March after hitting record high in February

"I am going to handover a letter to the Finance Minister this evening stating that an additional 10% GST be put on diesel-powered vehicles," Gadkari said. In the passenger vehicle segment, various carmakers including Maruti Suzuki India and Honda have already stopped manufacturing diesel cars. Gadkari said the contribution of diesel cars has already come down drastically in the country and the manufacturers need to stop selling them in the market. Terming diesel as a hazardous fuel, he noted that the country has to import the fuel to meet the demand. "Say goodbye to diesel... Please stop making them, otherwise we will just increase the tax so much that it would become difficult to sell diesel cars" Gadkari said. Both petrol and diesel sales recorded robust 4-6 per cent increases in the first nine months of 2023-24, fuelled by heightened economic activities in the agriculture and power sectors, coupled with a surge in holiday travel and auto sales. Fitch said it expects Indian refiners' gross refining margins (GRM) to moderate during 2024-25 from the strong levels expected in 2023-24, but remain above mid-cycle levels. By 2025-26, it foresees a shift closer to mid-cycle levels, but remaining resilient, bolstered by the escalating demand for end-products. "The gradual normalisation of the crude supply mix away from Russian imports is likely to narrow GRMs, although we expect margins to stay strong, supported by the rising demand for end-products," the rating agency said. In the upstream segment, domestic oil and gas production has modestly increased, driven by a 5 per cent rise in gas production in the first nine months of 2023-24. "We expect production to continue to rise moderately as technological investments in enhanced oil recovery techniques will offset natural declines," the rating agency said. Fitch forecasts the oil and gas sector's high capex intensity to continue in the medium term, particularly with upstream companies investing in production enhancement. In the downstream segment, <keyword id="20039004" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hindustan-petroleum-corporation-limited" source="keywords">Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited</keyword> should maintain higher capex due to planned investments by its subsidiary, HPCL <keyword id="20521636" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rajasthan-refinery-limited" source="keywords">Rajasthan Refinery Limited</keyword>. New Delhi [India], April 25 (ANI): Constrained supplies of milk and wheat, coupled with a volatile international crude oil market with OPEC+ countries deciding to cut crude oil production from May 2023 are factors that may, going forward, influence the inflation outlook in India, Ministry of Finance's Monthly Economic Review report put out on Tuesday noted. Milk inflation in India has remained elevated for several months due to a growing supply-demand mismatch. Milk production has been impacted by a Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) infecting millions of cattle in late 2022, its prices also rose because of high fodder and transportation costs. To meet the growing demand and considering the fact that the supply of milk in the ensuing summer season being a lean season may be less, the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying earlier this month said there were demands from several dairy cooperatives for the import of conserved dairy commodities - milk fat and powder. The ministry also added since the process of import takes time, the necessary back-end processes for need-based imports are being put in place to timely manage the situation in case of any eventuality. For wheat, there were reports from various key growing states that unseasonal rains have flattened standing crops in some regions. Wheat, a rabi crop was in an advanced maturing stage and was expected to hit mandis in a fortnight or so. "Although the second advance estimate has projected a record foodgrain production, the crop damage caused by unseasonal rains and hailstorms in some parts of the country since mid-March may constrain wheat production, besides perishable items such as fruits and vegetables," the Ministry of Finance's monthly report said. A survey conducted by Agri Watch, an Indian market information and analysis firm specialising in agricultural commodities, has estimated India's wheat production of 102.89 million tonnes in the 2022-23 crop season, reduced from 104.24 million tons (estimated in March 2023) due to unseasonal rains and hail storm faced by key wheat producing states towards the end of March. The estimates were based on the survey conducted in two phases across nine states- Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. Notably, last year, too, the wheat crop was affected, not due to rains but heatwaves. That came on top of the conflict in Ukraine. Global <keyword id="3854307" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="wheat-prices" source="Orion">wheat prices</keyword> have shown substantial volatility in the past year as both the countries -- Ukraine and Russia -- are two major suppliers of wheat. Multiple rounds of heat waves in several wheat-growing regions in India before the rabi harvest last year affected crops. Wheat pods in the mature stage typically shrink if overexposed to heat. To manage the overall food security of the country as well as meet the needs of the neighbouring and other vulnerable countries amid the double whammy, India then amended the export policy of wheat by putting its export under the "prohibited" category, which is still in force. RBI has been engaged in necessary policy actions to counter inflationary pressures and support growth. The Reserve Bank of India, in its first monetary policy review meeting in 2023-24, decided to keep the key benchmark interest rate -- the repo rate -- unchanged at 6.5 per cent, to assess the effects of the policy rate tightening done so far on various macroeconomic parameters. Barring the recent pause, RBI has so far raised the repo rate, the rate at which it lends to banks, by 250 basis points cumulatively since May 2022 in the fight against inflation. In the US, the interest rate is currently at 4.75 to 5.00 per cent, which was near zero during the initial days of the pandemic. Raising interest rates is a monetary policy instrument that typically helps suppress demand in the economy, thereby helping the inflation rate decline and vice versa. The RBI sees retail inflation declining to 5.2 per cent in the full year of 2023-24, lower than the 5.5 per cent attained in 2021-22 -- which was mostly free of the impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. In India, headline consumer price index-based (CPI) inflation (or retail inflation) has gradually declined from its peak of 7.8 per cent in April 2022 to 5.7 per cent in March 2023. (ANI)
