The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=BPO&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">BPO</a> sector is going to face the maximum brunt of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=supreme+court&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Supreme Court’s</a> ruling on non-<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=cng+cabs&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">CNG</a><a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=cng+cabs&amp;sortorder=effectivedate"> cabs</a> and as per a report, the losses will go up to an enormous amount of $1 billion. 
 
The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=nasscom&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">National Association of Software and Services Companies</a> (Nasscom) stated that the apex court’s ruling for Delhi-NCR will impact not only the <keyword id="510813" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="BPO-sector">BPO sector</keyword> but entire India.

Nasscom has written to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=road+ministry&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Road and Transport Ministry</a> as the BPO industry works 24x7 for global clients and the order can potentially lead to loss of jobs, investment and foreign exchange. 
 
The ruling, which aims at curbing pollution, will also put women safety at risk and add to traffic woes as people will not pool cabs and bring their own vehicles instead. 
 
Nasscom stated that the BPO companies are mostly located in the NCR and provide indirect employment to over a million people. 
“The industry faces a potential loss of $1billion if the issues associated with the diesel ban continue for 2-3 weeks,” said Sangeeta Gupta, senior vice president at Nasscom. 
 
"There are a million direct jobs and more than 3 million indirect jobs at stake here, contributing $28 billion to the exchequer. Also, half of the workforce of this industry is women and their safety is paramount," Keshav Murugesh, Group CEO of WNS BPO, told ET.

<ul><li><keyword id="1334" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="china" source="Orion">China</keyword> on Monday approved gaming licenses for 45 video games.</li><li>The country had stopped issuing licenses in July 2021.</li><li>Over 14,000 small developers were reportedly forced to shut down due to the ban.</li></ul>In a sigh of relief to video game publishers in China, Beijing has finally started approving gaming licenses. The country had stopped approving gaming licenses in July. China requires game publishers to obtain regulatory approvals before they release a game. The country’s National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA) is the regulatory body that provides approvals for video games in the country. According to a <a href="https://www.theregister.com/2022/04/12/china_approves_video_games_again/">report</a> by The Register, China approved just 45 games on Monday. The country had last approved games in July 2021, in which 87 games had received licenses. Considering that no game has been approved since July 2021, it is odd that only 45 games have received approval. According to the above report, prior to the ban, around 80 to 100 games were approved each month in China. While the move to ban video game approvals was done to reduce gaming addiction among the youth of the country, it had an adverse impact on companies like Tencent, a major player in the gaming industry that owns titles like PUBG Mobile, Call of Duty: Mobile, Ring Of Elysium and more. China approves 45 new video games after a 9-month ban that led 14,000 developers to shut down

In a setback to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=ola+cabs">Ola cabs</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=delhi+high+court">Delhi High Court</a> dismissed its plea challenging a single-judge order upholding <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=delhi+government">Delhi government</a>'s ban on such taxi services. 
 
"Appeal dismissed," a bench of Chief Justice G Rohini and Justice Jayant Nath said. 
 
On July 29, single-judge, in his interim order, had directed Delhi government's transport department and traffic police to "strictly enforce" the January 1 ban. 
 
The single-judge also sought an undertaking from ANI Technologies, which operates under the brand name of Ola that it will comply with the court's order. 
 
On August 4, the division bench had reserved its order after hearing arguments on Ola's plea. Ola accused single-judge of overlooking <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=supreme+court">Supreme Court</a>'s orders on the kind of taxis that can run on city's roads. 
 
Ola had argued that other non-app based taxi organisations come under <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=radio+taxi+scheme">Radio Taxi Scheme</a> and Ola does not own the vehicles that run under their brand and only connects the taxis with customers. 
 
The company released an official statement stating, "We respect the Honorable Divisional Bench's order on commercial diesel vehicles on all aggregator platforms in the state of New Delhi, as well as on those plying independently. We are working closely with the authorities to help and support the thousands of driver entrepreneurs and lakhs of citizens in the state, who use the Ola app." 
 
The Delhi government had said the All India Tourist Permit (AITP) vehicles that operate under Ola brand are meant for tourist destinations and not point-to-point service in city. 
 
In this regard, the single-judge admonished Ola for not complying with the ban imposed on it by Delhi government on January 01 this year and refused to grant it any interim relief. 
 
The single-judge had refused to provide any relief to Ola. 
 
The court had earlier questioned how Ola was operating in Delhi when the city government's order banning them had not been stayed and warned of a shutdown if it thought it was above the law.

Ola cabs remains banned in Delhi as high court dismisses plea

The ban on plying of 27,000 diesel-run taxis came into effect today even as its real impact is likely to be felt only tomorrow, the first working day after the imposition of restriction. 
 
The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=supreme+court&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Supreme Court</a> yesterday refused to extend the April 30 deadline fixed for the diesel-run taxis for their conversion into <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=CNG&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">CNG</a> mode. 
 
Authorities in various locations today impounded diesel-run cabs plying on the local routes in the national capital. 
 
 
 
"Instructions have been issued to concerned authorities, including transport department, to impound diesel-run taxis plying in Delhi-NCR," said a senior government official. 
 According to <keyword id="66" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Delhi">Delhi</keyword> transport department, about 60,000 taxis are registered in the national capital and of them 27,000 are running on diesel. 
 
Around 2,000 diesel-run taxis had converted into CNG mode in the last two months. 
 
The SC order is not applicable on cabs having All India Permits but most of the diesel cabs ply on local routes. The ban will essentially bring down the availability of cabs in the capital. 
 
"As per rule, taxis having All India permit are required to cover a distance of around 200 km. Taxis having All India permits cannot ply from one point to other point inside Delhi, Noida and Ghaziabad," the official said. 
 Cabs going off roads may inconvenience thousands of commuters as many <keyword id="3344947" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="diesel-taxis">diesel taxis</keyword> ferry people from Delhi, Noida, Gurgaon and Ghaziabad. 
 
"We can't keep on extending the time. We are not extending it now and not going to make any exceptions. There is technology available, you convert," a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice T S Thakur had yesterday said while rejecting the plea that it would affect livelihood of poor drivers. 
 
The bench, also comprising Justices A K Sikri and R Banumathi, had on March 31, extended the deadline till yesterday for conversion of all diesel taxis to CNG.

Ban on diesel-run taxis comes into effect in Delhi-NCR

The <keyword id="1983255" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="aap-government">AAP government</keyword> today told the Delhi <keyword id="6355392" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="High-Court">High Court</keyword> that <keyword id="1042120" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Uber">Uber</keyword>, <keyword id="6354720" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ola">Ola</keyword>, other aggregators of taxis or any operator, ought to be regulated in law to ensure security and safety of the users. 
 
The submission was made before a bench of Chief Justice G Rohini and Justice Jayant Nath, which is hearing Uber's plea that Delhi government be restrained from interfering with its business. 
 
The AAP government, however, said that Uber's plea is "not maintainable as they have not approached this this court with clean hands and are not entitled to any discretionary remedy for they are running their business illegally and are blatantly flouting the ban order dated January 1, 2015 passed by them and upheld by this court". 
 
The AAP government in its affidavit filed through advocate Prabhsahay Kaur also said that on December 5, 2014 a female passenger was raped by the driver of a car which was booked through the petitioner Uber platform. 
 
"The accused driver of the car has now been convicted by the trial court for rape. The said driver of Uber was known to be a habitual offender and was earlier accused for molestation and robbery. 
 
"These facts vindicate the stand of answering respondent (Delhi government) that Uber do not apply a proper screening process for selection of drivers which eventually led in the culmination of such an unfortunate and dastardly incident, which could have been avoided had the petitioners applied for a license under the under the prescribed procedure," the affidavit said. 
 
"The petitioners as well as other aggregator of taxis, and as a matter of fact any taxi operator, ought to be regulated in law to ensure the security and safety of the users of such platforms," it added. 
 
Government was responding to a court notice issued to them on October 13 last year seeking their replies on the petition of Uber, which runs an app-based taxi service in the national capital by using All India Tourist Permit (AITP) cabs running on diesel.

Uber, Ola and other cab-aggregators should be regulated: AAP govt tells Delhi HC

After the cab aggregators like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Ola+&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Ola </a>and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Uber&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Uber</a> came to India, they not only disrupted traditional taxi and three-wheeler markets across Indian cities but they also are pushing overall car sales at a time when automakers are struggling to expand business. 
 
The cab operators are said to have added more than half a million vehicles over the last two years and this accounts for more than 10% of total passenger vehicle sales during this period, largely helped by soaring sales to cab aggregators. 
 
Carmakers expect cab aggregators to drive their sales in the future even as fewer people may buy vehicles for personal use. 
 
"Bulk of cars will not be privately owned but will be used commercially by aggregators," RC Bhargava, chairman of the country's largest carmaker <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Maruti+Suzuki+India&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Maruti Suzuki India</a>, told ET. 
 
Reportedly, app-based cab operators accounted for over 100,000 cars, or almost one-third of total sales to fleet operators last year, up from around 70,000, or about one-fourth of total taxi sales in 2015. This year, sales to cab aggregators are expected to increase by at least 25 per cent while overall passenger vehicle sales are expected to grow in single digits. 
 
"App-based aggregators have added over 600,000 vehicles in the last four-five years. At present, more than 75 per cent of business for these firms comes from the top seven metros. As they increase their reach, demand for vehicles will also go up. In the short-to- mid term, almost 30 per cent of growth registered in the passenger vehicle segment will come in from these players," Puneet Gupta, associate director at automotive consulting firm IHS Markit, told ET. 
 <keyword id="44883" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maruti-Suzuki">Maruti Suzuki</keyword>'s Bhargava, however, doesn't see this as a threat to the industry. 
 
"Given that the running cycles of cabs are more than personal vehicles, we foresee shorter replacement cycles for the cars. This will trigger demand for cars," he told ET. 
 Whether the popularity of Uber and Ola impacts car sales for personal use in the future or not, right now soaring demand from aggregators is a boon for an industry that has been otherwise struggling to grow sales due to a number of reasons, including an eight-month ban on sales of larger diesel vehicles in the <keyword id="6371638" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Capital-Region">National Capital Region</keyword>, imposition of infrastructure cess of up to 4 per cent in the union budget last year, and most recently on account of weak consumer sentiment post the November 8 demonetisation announcement. 
 "Growth was stunted by diesel ban and demonetisation, which impacted the sentiment in 2016 and given the tough times, the fleet segment turned out to be a significant contributor," said Rakesh Srivastava, senior vice-president, sales and marketing, <keyword id="596" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hyundai">Hyundai</keyword> Motor India.

Car sales are up, thanks to Uber and Ola. Here’s how

Soon the government may ask app based taxi aggregators like Uber and <keyword id="6354720" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola">Ola</keyword> to get their software for fare calculation verified from Ministry of electronics and IT. This would also be applicable for the black and yellow taxi that operates on their platforms. 
 
The government expects this move to solve the doubts that looms large on cab operators and drivers. 
 
Having being subjected to a variety of setbacks including driver vetting, surge pricing, and safety issues, this would certainly bring a relief both for the aggregators and passengers alike. 
 
"The fare calculation mechanism for all modes of public transport are authorised by government. We need to do the same for taxi aggregators so their system becomes credible and there are no doubts on the software they use for calculating fares, taking into account distance travelled and time taken," a senior government official told the Economic Times. 
 
A meeting of the committee of state transport ministers has already deliberated on the issue and guidelines for taxi aggregators are likely to be issued soon and will include a cap on the maximum fare that could be charged. 
 
The ministry has already been informed about this. Also with many states banning diesel taxis, the cab operators need to follow fuel norms strictly. 
 
"We will also propose that the aggregators should take the black and yellow taxis on their platform so that there's no dissent from the local taxi companies," the official told ET.

Ola and Uber may need to get their
fare calculators verified by the government to prevent customer grievance

On Friday, the <keyword id="66" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Delhi">Delhi</keyword> government told the <keyword id="6355014" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Delhi-High-Court">Delhi High Court</keyword> that it may extend the odd-even scheme beyond the planned 15 days trial period. 
 
A division bench of Chief Justice G. Rohini and Justice Jayant Nath took note of the report submitted by the government on air pollution collected from January 1 to 8. It said it will pass an order on January 11 
Senior advocate Harish Salve, appearing for the Delhi government, defended the odd-even scheme aimed at curbing air pollution. 
 
He said there "is a definite positive effect" and the scheme "may be continued after two weeks. 
 
"Pollution is not going to go away. The odd-even scheme is an emergency measure to arrest peaking of the air pollution level," Salve said, submitting the data of the Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority (EPCA) on air pollution since January 1. 
 
The bench earlier asked the Delhi government whether it can limit restrictions on the plying of even- and odd-numbered vehicles in Delhi on alternate days to "a week" instead of the planned 15 days. 
 
Delhi Transport Minister Gopal Rai and AAP member Ashish Khetan were present in the court during the hearing. 
 
The government claimed that vehicular pollution had fallen since January 1 when the scheme was launched.

A few months on, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Uber&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Uber</a> recently sued <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Ola&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Ola</a> for allegedly creating 93,000 fake <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Uber&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Uber</a> accounts, and tampering its businesses. The company has been seeking around $7.4 million in damages. 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Uber&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Uber</a> claims <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Ola&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Ola</a> employees used bogus accounts to book and cancel a whopping 400,000 rides over the last six months. 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Uber&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Uber</a> allegedly had to pay high cancellation charges to drivers due to this. It claims around 20,000 drivers quit the platform in frustration. 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Ola&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Ola</a> officials 'categorically deny’ <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Uber&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Uber</a>'s allegations of fraud. Senior officials Anand Subramanian and Rahul Maroli told Business Insider they 'stand by' their statement. 
 
Accusations: Both <keyword id="6354720" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Ola">Ola</keyword> and <keyword id="1042120" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Uber">Uber</keyword> have been accused of wrong-doing. 
 
Recently, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Paytm&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Paytm</a>-backed online transportation app <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Jugnoo&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Jugnoo</a> alleged Ola has adopted unethical practices against it. In a blog post, the company claims Ola employees made fake bookings, and tried to hamper its operations. 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Jugnoo&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Jugnoo</a> CEO Samar Singla has said his team saw a sudden surge in bookings and cancelations. According to him, around 20,000 cancelations were made through 800 accounts over a 10-day period earlier this month. In December, the auto-rickshaw aggregator had accused Ola of poaching employees and driver database in Chandigarh. 
 
Uber has made similar claims against Ola. Ola spokesperson <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Anand+Subramanian&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Anand Subramanian</a> maintains this to be Uber’s way of ‘payback’ for the legal petition Ola filed, accusing Uber of flouting a Supreme Court order. 
 
Interestingly, Uber’s rivals <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Lyft&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Lyft</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Gett&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Gett</a> had in 2014 complained against the aggregator of making false bookings, and recruiting Lyft and Gett driver partners for its own service. 
 
Experiments gone wrong: 
In an attempt to find new battlegrounds, Ola and Uber both launched their bike-taxi services in India’s Bengaluru on the very same day. 
 It seems both knew of each other’s plans and neither wanted to be left behind. However, neither was fully ready. Several users claimed not a single <keyword id="3149752" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="bike-taxi">bike taxi</keyword> was visible. 
 
Both were offering extremely competitive rates. Ola has a per km rate of Rs 2, and a minimum fare of Rs 30. Uber has a per km rate of Rs 3 and a minimum fare of Rs 15. 
 
However, Ola was forced to roll back its service a few days later after the Karnataka state government said that India’s Motor Vehicle Act doesn’t have a provision for two wheelers to be used as taxis. Simply put, the bike taxi services were illegal. 
 
When asked about the same, Ola COO Pranay Jivrajka refused to comment on the issue. 
 
However, Uber bike taxis continue to ply on Bengaluru’s (earlier Bangalore) roads. 
 
This isn’t the first time this has happened. As rival Uber was turning up the heat, Ola started experimenting with hyper-local food and grocery delivery. 
 
It was later forced to shut these and focus on serving its core business. Although, it went on an overdrive, introducing new categories like Micro, Prime, a shuttle bus service and carpooling in a very short span. 
 
Regulatory hassles: 
While Uber has been facing regulatory hassles worldwide, and has the muscle to lobby for friendlier policies, Ola is still pretty new to such complications in business. 
 
Recently, Indian state Karnataka stood firm on not allowing surge pricing for app-based ride hailing services such as Ola and Uber. In the state, online taxi aggregators operate as ride-hailing service under a license obtained under the Radio Taxi Scheme, 1988. 
 
The policy says the charged fare cannot be higher than the fare fixed by the government. That means transport apps have to charge within a band where the upper limit is capped. Ola COO <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Pranay+Jivrajka&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Pranay Jivrajka</a> told BI the company's 'working together' with the state government to find a feasible solution. 
 
Way back in August, in a major setback to Ola Cabs, the Delhi High Court dismissed its plea challenging a single-judge order upholding Delhi government's ban on such taxi services. 
 
While Ola argued that non-app based taxi organizations also come under the Radio Taxi Scheme, and that Ola doesn’t own these vehicles anyway, the Delhi government had said the All India Tourist Permit (AITP) vehicles that operate under Ola brand are meant for tourist destinations and not point-to-point service in city. 
 
Online taxi aggregators were finally legalized. 
 
Chest Thumping 
Ola and Uber have both thrown around numbers that hardly make sense if put together. 
 
In a recent interview, Ola’s Chief Marketing Officer and Head of Categories Raghuvesh Sarup said, "In three weeks, we have put up a category (Ola Micro) which is already 50% of all of Uber's daily bookings in the country. The rate at which Micro is growing, it will be larger than their entire brand within a month." 
 
On the other hand, Eric Alexander, President of Uber's Asia business, in an interview said his company was on the verge of overtaking Ola in India. "In January last year, we were at five per cent market share. Now, we are right at the edge of 50 per cent. Within next 30 days, we would beat them (Ola). We will surpass them very, very shortly." 
 
The statistics are even more confusing. Ola claims it holds 75% of the Indian app-based taxi-hailing market, with over 350,000 driver partners on its platform across the country, while Uber claims otherwise. 
 
As the cut-throat fight between Uber and Ola continues, some say it’s reminiscent of Uber’s tussle with Lyft in the U.S. The two San Francisco-based rivals were constantly undercutting each other’s tariffs, poaching each other’s drivers and duplicating services. 
 
Let’s just say its the same war, but with some Indian masala.
