CHENNAI: A <keyword id="6356109" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="diesel">diesel</keyword> vehicle means higher cost of acquisition but significantly lower fuel bills, right? Well, not quite. Thanks to falling <keyword id="6367091" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Petrol">petrol</keyword> prices and rising diesel fuel costs in recent months, the petrol-diesel gap is now at its slimmest since last June. Which means, the Rs 1-lakh premium (at the very least) that any diesel vehicle commands over its petrol variant now makes the former’s running costs steeper than a petrol car. The math is clear: Petrol cars, including running costs and cost of acquisition, are now cheaper to run than diesel vehicles. 
 First the figures. With the latest cut in petrol prices on Sunday, August 31, and regular increases in diesel prices by 50p, the petrol-diesel gap now spans a slim spectrum, ranging from Rs 9.15 to just over Rs 12. The gap between the two fuels in Delhi is Rs 9.54 per litre. It’s highest in <keyword id="6354925" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Kolkata">Kolkata</keyword> at Rs 12.33 per litre with Chennai and Mumbai at Rs 8.63 and Rs 9.15 per litre, respectively. 
 
On an average, a new vehicle gives a mileage of 14-15 km per litre. For 50 km a day — the average commute distance in most Indian metros — the vehicle will, therefore, consume nearly 4 litres of petrol. That works out to about 120 litres of petrol a month. 
 
 
 In Delhi, the fuel differential will, therefore, save you around Rs 1,100 a month if you’re driving a diesel vehicle rather than a petrol one. Ditto for Mumbai. The <keyword id="25450" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="savings">savings</keyword> are over Rs 1,000 a month in Chennai and nearly Rs 1,500 a month in Kolkata. Substantial? Not quite. 
 
Now consider the premium that you need to fork out to drive away with your diesel vehicle, and watch the math turn topsy turvy. A typical diesel car costs at least Rs 1,00,000 more than its petrol variant. 
 Let’s take a common example — the Maruti <keyword id="6911" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="suzuki">Suzuki</keyword> Swift. A best-selling car in both its petrol and diesel variants, the Swift petrol LXi base model costs Rs 4.42 lakh ex-showroom, Delhi. Its base diesel model LDi costs Rs 5.46 lakh ex-Delhi. 
 
Amortized over a typical loan period of four years, or 48 months, this just over Rs 1,00,000 differential means that the cost of acquiring a diesel vehicle is at least Rs 2,000 more each month. Which means even in the more fuel-expensive cities like Mumbai and Chennai, the monthly price differential between petrol and diesel, at just over Rs 1,000, is half of the premium that buying a diesel vehicle will impose on your pocket for the length of the loan period. 
 
This petrol-diesel math is responsible for the tide turning in favour of petrol vehicles in recent months. Top car marketers say the preference for diesel variants over petrol is down from 70:30 back in 2012 to 50:50 right now. Diesel’s small incremental price hikes mean it is nearly 14% costlier now than a year ago. Meanwhile, a decontrolled petrol price has seen some downward corrections. 
 
However, despite the slimmer differential, diesel still scores over petrol in terms of mileage. Explained Kumar Kandaswami, director, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India: “Diesel vehicles offer 15-20% better mileage which petrol variants will find difficult to match. So per km cost of diesel will always be better. But there is clearly a rebalancing going on and at this rate the market should settle at a 55:45 ratio between diesel and petrol vehicle sales.”

Nationwide, inventories for the most commonly used diesel have dropped <a href="https://www.eia.gov/dnav/pet/hist/LeafHandler.ashx?n=PET&amp;s=WD0ST_NUS_1&amp;f=W">43%</a> since 2020 to the lowest since 2014. In the Central Atlantic region, inventories have crashed 78% from 2020 to the <a href="https://www.eia.gov/dnav/pet/hist/LeafHandler.ashx?n=PET&amp;s=WD0ST_R1Y_1&amp;f=W">lowest in a decade</a>. Other categories of diesel are seeing steeper drops.And in New York, the situation is so dire that refinery and fuel magnate <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-05-11/nyc-billionaire-catsimatidis-warns-of-rationed-east-coast-diesel">John Catsimatidis told Bloomberg</a>, "I wouldn't be surprised to see diesel being rationed on the East Coast this summer."Conditions are worse around the world. In Europe, diesel prices have soared 88%. The International <keyword id="11917806" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="energy" source="Orion">Energy</keyword> Agency said Thursday that global stockpiles of refined oil, including diesel, have fallen to extremely low levels, and shortages are already limiting transportation across various African nations as well as Yemen, Sri Lanka, and Mexico."There's been significant demand due to economies opening up domestically and globally," Rob Thummell, managing director at Tortoise Capital, told Insider. "With supply not being able to keep up with the big demand, we haven't seen anything like this in decades, since the [19]70s."Back then, motorists formed long lines at gas stations to fill up on designated days, as strict rationing was used in response to OPEC's oil embargo. "There's this huge boost in business activity, and the fuel for business activity is diesel," Mitchell said.<h2>Global Market for Diesel</h2>On the supply side, some refineries were shut down when demand was lower, meaning that even when oil companies pump more crude, the remaining refineries can't churn out more diesel at the same pace.What's more, certain diesel-making regions such as California have been working to convert refineries into biodiesel hubs, which is "fantastic for the future but poses a problem for right now," according to Mitchell. US diesel supplies are also going overseas, including to places like Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Ecuador, he added.The war in Ukraine is also tightening diesel availability, Thummell explained, since <keyword id="11894337" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="russia" source="Orion">Russia</keyword>n refiners aren't pushing supplies into the European market due to bans and self-sanctioning. According to Vortexa data compiled by Bloomberg, Russia's Baltic and Black Sea ports moved 3.32 million tons of diesel in April, <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/commodities/russian-diesel-exports-sink-diesel-prices-soar-global-fuel-market-2022-5">down 14% from February.</a>Diesel now costs so much it's hitting demand, which Mitchell calls "price rationing." That could help ease prices. "But unfortunately that also corresponds with heading into a recession."The end of the <keyword id="13186997" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ukraine-war" source="Orion">Ukraine war</keyword> could also cool prices. But if the EU imposes an embargo on Russian oil, the diesel crisis might linger or worsen, with repercussions that could span every industry. "We're looking at at least two years of higher food prices via farming, and limited refining capacities in the world and the US," Mitchell said. "And we're still demanding more diesel than anyone can supply."

The premium diesel is priced at rates lower than normal or additive-free diesel sold by public sector (PSU) competition. "Jio-bp today announced the launch of its diesel with ACTIVE technology, set to elevate diesel standards for Indian consumers. "The newly launched additivised diesel, available across the company's network will yield annual savings of up to Rs 1.1 lakh per vehicle to truckers owing to (up to) 4.3 per cent improved fuel economy," it said in a statement. The new diesel is being sold at the Jio-bp outlet in Navi Mumbai for Rs 91.30 per litre, while the normal diesel at PSU petrol pumps in the area cost Rs 92.28 a litre. This new high performance diesel offering will be available at all Jio-bp outlets and "will be offered at regular prices with no additional cost for the first time ever in the Indian market," it said. Diesel with ACTIVE technology helps reduce the risk of unscheduled maintenance caused by dirt build up and removes existing dirt from critical engine parts and protects against its build up with ongoing use. It is designed to work across a range of commercial vehicles, and with ongoing use it offers a variety of benefits to drivers and fleet owners. "I am going to handover a letter to the Finance Minister this evening stating that an additional 10% GST be put on diesel-powered vehicles," Gadkari said. In the passenger vehicle segment, various carmakers including Maruti Suzuki India and Honda have already stopped manufacturing diesel cars. Gadkari said the contribution of diesel cars has already come down drastically in the country and the manufacturers need to stop selling them in the market. Terming diesel as a hazardous fuel, he noted that the country has to import the fuel to meet the demand. "Say goodbye to diesel... Please stop making them, otherwise we will just increase the tax so much that it would become difficult to sell diesel cars" Gadkari said. He said he will propose additional GST on diesel-powered generators as well. Automobiles are currently taxed at 28% GST, with additional cess ranging from 1% to 22% depending on the type of vehicle. SUVs attract the highest GST at the rate of 28% along with a compensation cess at 22%. Gadkari also asked the industry to focus on environment-friendly alternative fuels like ethanol. He also asked the industry to focus on green hydrogen. A dream!</li></ul>In case you didn't know, <a href="https://insider.com/category/vin-diesel">Vin Diesel</a> has a shrine dedicated to his "Fast and Furious" character, Dominic Toretto. Called the Dom Shrine (or <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/BwarCe8nuQj/">the Toretto gym</a>), it's "kind of a sanctuary I go to prepare for the next chapter," Diesel explained in a 2019 Instagram video, noting it was created earlier that year.As someone who's a proud fan of this <a href="https://www.insider.com/fast-9-movie-review-2021-6">ridiculously fun franchise</a>, I needed to know more about what's in the Dom Shrine. "Afterwards, he took a small video for social media and you can see in the video, I still don't know what's going on. I'm kind of bewildered by the whole process, but the conversation was great.""We really did hit it off in a very short period of time and he put that video out to the universe to kind of gauge everybody's excitement level," Cena said of Diesel, who asked fans what they thought of Cena potentially joining the "Fast" fam."The 'Fast' universe was very gracious in saying, 'Wow, this could be really fun.' As someone who's been playing the same character in the WWE for 17 years, Cena said he gets the need for a "Dom Shrine.""You've got to remember, Dom Toretto is the heart and soul of the 'Fast' franchise. So you don't want to be anywhere else but that when you start filming," Cena said. "You need to pick up right where you left off. It needs to seem seamless.""It really was something else. Man, when I say he's dedicated to 'Fast and Furious,' he's so dedicated to the franchise and it truly is a legacy body of work for him and the other cast members," Cena added, noting he watched the entire "Fast Saga" when joining the franchise. It was created in 2000 and has only been used once, following 2012's Hurricane Sandy.However, since this reserve is small at only 1 million barrels in total — or roughly one day's worth of supply for the region — the impact would be minimal.Prices for the key fuel have surged roughly 75% over the last year as inventories have plummeted. US stockpiles for the most commonly used diesel have dropped 43% since 2022 to the lowest level since 2014. Like many <keyword id="11917806" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="energy" source="Orion">energy</keyword> commodities, market demand has dramatically outstripped supply through 2022, leading to sharp price increases and fears of persistently high inflation.In the Northeast things are even more dire. The average price for a gallon of diesel in New York state is $6.52, up 102% from a year ago.Diesel powers much of the <keyword id="11893570" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="economy" source="Orion">economy</keyword>, as it is responsible for fueling big-rig trucks, farm equipment, and heavy industrial machinery.Tapping the diesel reserve would echo the administration's relief actions from earlier this year. The White House announced on March 31 that it will <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biden-oil-release-lower-gas-prices-stockpile-russia-ukraine-inflation-2022-3">release 1 million barrels of crude oil per day</a> from the nation's Strategic Petroleum Reserve over the next six months to counter elevated energy prices. That equates to an additional 180 million barrels of crude set to hit the market by the time the release ends in the fall. The program aims to "serve as a bridge" until domestic oil companies can ramp up production, administration officials said in March.Yet fuel prices <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gas-prices-climb-record-nationwide-crude-oil-market-437-2022-5">continue to hit record highs</a>, and with inventory still strained, the diesel market is facing its <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/commodities/diesel-prices-soar-supply-crisis-gas-station-rationing-inflation-2022-5">worst crisis in decades</a>, analysts told Insider earlier.The influx of crude supply helped somewhat in April, but refining capacity is the latest bottleneck to boost prices.
