Prime Minister <keyword id="19895781" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="keywords">Narendra Modi</keyword> urged CEOs of US majors to take advantage of India's growth story as the country is making all efforts to become the third largest economy of the world in his third term. India is currently the fifth largest economy of the world after the US, China, Germany and Japan with a GDP of around USD 3.9 trillion. India has been the fastest growing large economies of the world with GDP growth rate of over 7 per cent for the last three consecutive years. Addressing CEOs of the large US tech firms on Sunday, Modi said India will make every effort to become the third largest economy in the world in his third term (2024-29). Companies should take advantage of India's growth story for collaboration and innovation by co-developing, co-designing, and co-producing in India for the world, harnessing the opportunities from the country's economic and technological growth, he said. Assuring the business leaders of India's deep commitment to the protection of intellectual property and to fostering tech innovation, Modi highlighted the economic transformation happening in the country, particularly in electronics and information technology manufacturing and semiconductors. Modi asserted that his government was committed to making India a "global hub of <keyword id="20073013" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="semiconductor-manufacturing" source="keywords">semiconductor manufacturing</keyword>". The meeting took place at the Lotte <keyword id="19904497" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="New-York" source="keywords">New York</keyword> Palace Hotel on Sunday during the second leg of Modi's three-day US visit. It saw the participation of CEOs of 15 major US-based firms working on cutting-edge technologies such as AI, quantum computing and semiconductors. "Had a fruitful roundtable with tech CEOs in New York, discussing aspects relating to technology, innovation and more. Also highlighted the strides made by India in this field. I am glad to see immense optimism towards India," Modi said in a post on X. During the conference, Modi said technology collaboration and efforts such as the Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (ICET) lie at the core of the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership, according to a Ministry of External Affairs press release. Organised by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) School of Engineering, the CEOs of top US tech firms, including Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayena, Accenture CEO Julie Sweet and NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang attended the meeting. Others who participated in the roundtable included AMD CEO Lisa Su, HP Inc. CEO Enrique Lores, IBM CEO Arvind Krishna, Dr Noubar Afeyan, Chairman of Moderna, and Verizon CEO Hans Vestberg. Modi also talked about India's BIO E3 (biotechnology for environment, economy and employment) policy to develop the country into a biotech powerhouse and on the topic of AI, noted that India's policy is to promote AI for all, underpinned by its ethical and responsible use. The CEOs appreciated India's growing prominence as a global technology hub, driven by its innovation-friendly policies and flourishing market opportunities. They also expressed strong interest in investing and collaborating with India, agreeing that investing in startups would be a synergistic opportunity to innovate and develop newer technologies in the country. Others who attended the conference included Biogen Inc CEO Chris Viehbacher, CEO of Bristol Myers Squibb, Chris Boerner, Eli Lilly and Company CEO David A. PM Modi invites US CEOs to take a 'byte' out of India's growing technology sector

Underlining the contribution of non-resident Indians, Union Finance Minister <keyword id="129243" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nirmala-sitharaman" source="Orion">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword> on Tuesday said <keyword id="6369957" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="remittances" source="Orion">remittances</keyword> sent to the country by overseas Indians were about USD 100 billion for the year 2022, an increase of 12 per cent in one year. Speaking at a session during the <keyword id="70478" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pravasi-Bharatiya-Divas" source="Orion">Pravasi Bharatiya Divas</keyword> (PBD) convention in Madhya Pradesh's Indore city, she described NRIs as the "real ambassadors of India" and appealed to them to use made in India products and services as far as possible so that the country's individual brand can be promoted across the globe. Sitharaman also said that after the "China plus one" policy, the world is now talking about the "European Union (EU) plus one" policy. The government is strongly presenting India to multinational companies as a country where they can set up their factories apart from China and the EU, she said. Sitharaman said the <keyword id="6402673" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-diaspora" source="Orion">Indian diaspora</keyword> should also partner with small and big businessmen of the country so that the entrepreneurial skills of NRIs can be harnessed in the next 25 years during the 'Amrit Kaal' of independence. This is one of the highest remittances which is coming," the finance minister said. This has gone up by 12 per cent if compared to 2021, she said. "Within a year which was post-pandemic, people thought Indian workers will not go back abroad again, they have not only gone back but more have gone for very useful employment and the remittance numbers have gone up by 12 pc within one year," she said. Citing the dominance of Indian professionals in information technology, digital technology, automobiles, semiconductor designing, pharmaceutical manufacturing and other fields, she said the country is becoming a global hub of knowledge and progress. Pay $8 to get blue tick on Twitter: Elon Musk

A US-based diaspora body on Tuesday launched an online petition campaign urging the Secretary of State Anthony <keyword id="10620101" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="blinken" source="Orion">Blinken</keyword> to reduce the long waitlist for various types of American visas being issued from <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>. "We request the State Department, Secretary of State Mr Anthony Blinken and the US embassies in India to eliminate wait times for <keyword id="6359421" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="visa" source="Orion">visa</keyword> appointments in India. "Even after a two-year-long Covid-era pause in visa appointments at the US embassies in India, the visa appointment situation is far from normal, requiring 300 to 900 days of wait time based on the visa types," Foundation for India and Indian Diaspora Studies or FIIDS said launching its online petition campaign. As per travel.state.gov reports on October 31, there is an average 900+ days' wait time for appointments for visitors' visa (B1/B2), an average 400 days' wait time for students (F, M,J) and an average 300 days' wait time for petition-based temp workers like H, L, O, P and Q across the USA consulates in India (Mumbai, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai and Kolkata), it said. In contrast, the US consulates in China only have an average three days' wait time, FIIDS said. "The 900+ days' delay deprives Indian Americans and Indian immigrants in the USA of having their beloved relatives to visit, whether in the time of difficulties, needs, or for celebrations, impacting their quality of life," it said. "The 400+ days' wait time affects students joining the US universities, that not only impacts students' future but also negatively impacts the US universities," FIIDS said, adding, the 300+ days' wait time is impacting productivity and success of various industries and businesses due to lack of skilled workers. "We urge the US State Department and Sec Blinken to resolve this issue. We believe it is not only important for US interests but the right thing to do on moral and compassionate grounds," FIIDS said in its petition on Change.Org. "As per Reuters news on 27th Sept, the Secretary of State blamed the lack of resources and funding due to lost revenues from fees on this 'self-financed program,'" the petition said. "We request the concerned authorities to take all necessary steps and to seek emergency funds to resolve this backlog. We are eager to assist in any way possible and will forge a coalition of individuals who will rise to the occasion to assist in mitigating this issue," it added. Diaspora group launches online petition urging Blinken to reduce visa wait time

A total of six murders, including that of an eight-month-old infant, within a week's time, begs an answer to the question every Indian wants to know - is the community safe in the US? The US is home to more than 4.5 million Indians, which is the highest-earning ethnic group in the country. President <keyword id="99719" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="joe-biden" source="Orion">Joe Biden</keyword> recently went on record to say: "It's amazing, Indian - of descent - Americans are taking over the country: you, my Vice President (<keyword id="180909" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kamala-harris" source="Orion">Kamala Harris</keyword>), my speechwriter, Vinay (Vinay Reddy)... You guys are incredible!" Even as one grappled with the shock of four Sikh family members, within the age groups of eight months to 39 years, found dead in California, news of 20-year-old student Varun Manish Chheda stabbed to death on Purdue University campus, sent shockwaves running across the Indian community world over. Earlier this week, Gurpreet Kaur Dosanjh, a Walmart employee, was shot dead and lumped inside a car in a parking lot in San Jose, California. In June this year, Satnam Singh, 31, was shot dead while sitting in a parked SUV down the street from his home in New York. This came days after Sai Charan Nakka, a 25-year-old techie from Telangana, was killed after sustaining an apparent gunshot wound to his head in Maryland Apart from the gruesome killings, Indian Americans have been consistently battling racial taunts, assaults, hate crime robberies, and vandalism of their properties. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), 161 anti-Asian <keyword id="6463069" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hate-crimes" source="Orion">hate crimes</keyword> took place in 2019, which rose to 279 in 2020. Giving a religious break-up, the FBI said that 54 anti-Sikh crimes occurred in 2019, which rose to 89 in 2020. Anti-Asian hate crime increased by 339 per cent last year compared to the year before, with New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and other cities surpassing their record numbers in 2020, according to research by the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism. Late in August, four Indian American women were told that they were "ruining" America and should "go back to India" by a Mexican-American woman in Texas. In the same month, Krishnan Jayaraman was racially abused and called a "disgusting Hindu" by Californian Rajinder Singh in a Taco Bell outlet in Fremont. Community members have also expressed concerns over multiple brazen attacks on Mahatma Gandhi's statue in New York and other US cities. "Such bigoted attacks motivated by <keyword id="44060" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="racism" source="Orion">racism</keyword>, xenophobia, and other forms of hate victimise not only those directly targeted by them but also broader communities through creating an atmosphere of fear and danger," Indian-American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi had said recently. Last month, Indian-Americans held a peaceful protest at Time Square against the recent spurt in hate crimes and instances of vandalism of the Gandhi statue in the city. An Indian American Attitudes Survey released last year found that "one in two Indian-Americans reports being discriminated against in the past one year, with discrimination based on skin colour identified as the most common form of bias". Somewhat surprisingly, Indian-Americans born in the US are much more likely to report being victims of discrimination than their foreign-born counterparts," the survey, supported by Carnegie Endowment, said. Biden had spoken strongly against hate crimes at a recent event against racism. It remains to be seen what Biden, who boasts of having appointed more than 130 Indian-Americans to key positions in his administration so far, does now for the community that has made significant contributions to this great landscape. Business men, political elites, and former Haitian president, Michel Martelly, are known targets.Many of G9's victims, as well as activists, have revealed that members have, "<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/the_americas/haiti-moise-coronavirus-barbecue/2020/08/14/2554fce4-cf4d-11ea-8c55-61e7fa5e82ab_story.html">looted and burned down shacks and stalls</a>, systematically raped women, killed at random, and dismembered or torched bodies" and is one of at least <a href="https://www.latimes.com/world-nation/story/2021-07-12/haiti-gangs-complicate-recovery-effort-assassination">30 gangs</a> that control nearly half of Port-Au-Prince.Anti-government corruption activists in the country and throughout its diaspora say it's no surprise foreign leaders would exploit Haiti's political instability now. In return, his government had earned allies who implemented a strategy to gain political support and repress the opposition, spiking insecurity. Activists say throughout the Moïse regime, the government relied on gangs to control territories and protect their party. But mismanagement, foreign interference, and lack of accountability further pushed locals into armed groups, making them more powerful over time."The government used the federation to remain in power and to establish a climate of fear in the country. They succeeded," said Ducena.Opponents take it a step further, <a href="https://twitter.com/derosepl/status/1413921362071203845">suggesting</a> that Moïse was never fully in control of Haiti once gangs and foreign parties became involved. The first Black Secretary of State had been battling a multi-year bout with myeloma, a type of blood cancer and Parkinson's disease. As Secretary of State under President George W. Bush, Powell became the highest ranking Black official in Washington before the election of Democrat President Barack Obama. Powell was a lifelong Republican who left the party after the attempted insurrection of January 6. And as the son of Jamaican immigrants, Powell was the highest ranking Caribbean-American official before the election of Vice President Kamala Harris - whose father hails from the same island. This week, in commemoration of Powell as a trailblazer, Black-immigrant communities gave balanced accounts of honoring Powell's accomplishments but also recognizing his record in some of the most powerful positions in the US government. <h2>Prominent Caribbean-American leaders and public figures shared their reflections </h2>Over the years Powell has stayed connected to his Jamaican roots, returning to the Caribbean nation at the request of then Prime Minister Michael Manley after the Gulf War in 1992. Between France and the US, experts estimate Haiti is <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/colonial-era-debt-helped-shape-haitis-poverty-political/story?id=78851735">owed billions in reparations</a> for the impact of colonialism, slavery and even the US's <a href="https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2021/09/the-united-states-owes-haiti-reparations.html">theft of an uninhabited island</a> the country owns.Dr. Celeste, whose book "Race, Gender, and Citizenship in the African Diaspora: Travelling Blackness" details this <a href="https://www.thenation.com/article/world/haiti-antoinette-duclaire-murder/">shared history</a>, added that US imperialism influences how Haitians are received and treated abroad today. "Haitian immigrants have been particularly stigmatized, echoing images of Haiti, as poor, dangerous, sick, and this impacts how we are received in communities, schools, employment opportunities and all aspects of everyday life," she said.The Caribbean island has also been <a href="https://www.teenvogue.com/story/racist-stereotypes-haiti-media">misrepresented through the media,</a> manipulating perceptions of it. A misconception that <a href="https://www.wordswithoutborders.org/contributor/nadeve-menard">Nadève Ménard</a>, author and professor of literature at the École Normale Supérieure of Université d'État d'Haïti, has noticed is that the current political climate is somehow unique. "What is happening here is very much part of larger global networks," she told Insider. "Aid industries need aid recipients, for example. The sophisticated weapons that gangs here are displaying are being sold by someone." Haiti, for example, saw <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/media/pda/2010/jan/14/socialnetworking-haiti">a spike in global news coverage</a> following the 2010 catastrophic earthquake, with outlets gaining readers and revenue from disaster profiteering that already impacted the country.For experts, it's like clockwork that the media feeds on disaster reporting when convenient. Professor Guerra explained that Haiti is seen as a failure whose problems are its own creation, not those of the outside world. It is certainly not the fault of consistently accumulated historical injustices. "We treat Haiti as a pariah that is undeserving of respect, let alone sovereignty," she concluded. Following the president's assassination, there has been a rotation of Haitian politicians wanting to claim power. That insecurity was made worse when a sudden 7.2 earthquake struck Haiti's southwest, exacerbating the existing migration crisis at the southern border in Texas. Amid the <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/9/16/haiti-pm-henry-replaces-justice-minister-after-sacking-prosecutor">political reshuffles</a>, publications have been quick to point out Haiti's extensive corruption. Scholars call on observers to ask themselves why that is. "It is problematic to imply that corruption only happens in Haiti or happens here more than elsewhere.," she added. "The way to counter stereotypes is to go to sources where Haitians are speaking for themselves," Haitian-American writer Edwidge Danticat told Insider in an email, encouraging people to listen to Haitian youth and elders. "We are not a monolith. Haiti is not a monolith. We don't always agree. We have layers. We contain multitudes," she added. With the dehumanizing visuals of Haitian migrants at the border this week, there are renewed calls to help Haiti - a common sentiment the internet shared just a few years ago. In 2010, after the catastrophic earthquake of a 7.0 magnitude killed <a href="https://www.worldvision.org/disaster-relief-news-stories/2010-haiti-earthquake-facts">hundreds of thousands of people, </a>many celebrities were found organizing concerts and<a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2010/jan/24/hollywood-stars-phones-haiti-telethon"> benefits</a>, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Glny4jSciVI">singing songs</a>, and centering themselves in the cause. Danticat encourages supporters to immerse themselves in Haitian-led cultural initiatives, including reading Haitian writers, listening to Haitian music, and taking in Haitian art and even social media. Today, politicians and public figures are using their platforms to take an explicit stance and remind people of the role international communities have had in Haiti; past and present. Now, as states reopen and communities are tasked with rebuilding, Caribbean diasporas across the country told Insider their unity behind their shared cultural identity is key to their sociopolitical, health, economic recovery. <h2>Many Caribbean American diasporas were in coronavirus hotspots</h2><div type="image" title="vaccine healthcare workers us" height="1051" width="1500" msid="84084184" hostid="261"></div>Most Caribbean immigrants and first generation Americans reside in New York state and Florida according to 2017 data from the Migration Policy Institute - accounting for <a href="https://www.migrationpolicy.org/article/caribbean-immigrants-united-states-2017">63%</a> of the entire Caribbean population in the US. <a href="https://www.bls.gov/careeroutlook/2018/article/blacks-in-the-labor-force.htm?view_full">Data</a> from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that Black people hold many of the jobs in the taxi service industry, the foodservice industry, as well as the hotel industry. Many immigrants, including Caribbean immigrants, also work in the healthcare industry - the very frontline workers that have been caring for the nation during the pandemic. A <a href="https://www.migrationpolicy.org/article/immigrant-health-care-workers-united-states-2018">report</a> from the Migration Policy Institute also shows that more than 2.6 million immigrants were employed as healthcare workers as of 2018. They account for 18% of healthcare workers in the US. That meant when the public was asked to stay at home to flatten the curve, it was immigrant communities and Black and brown Americans who largely kept the country running.But advocates note that in polling and surveys, Caribbean Americans are often lumped together with African Americans and that can make it difficult to campaign for their unique needs as a community culturally, politically, and economically.In 2020, the US Census Bureau released a new questionnaire that included the option for people to note their country of origin, which will help differentiate Caribbean Americans from African Americans."Twenty percent of New York, New Yorkers are of Caribbean descent so it's very important that we're seen," Shelley Worrell the founder and chief curator of caribBeing, <a href="https://www.ny1.com/nyc/all-boroughs/news/2021/02/15/new-yorker-of-the-week--shelley-vidia-worrell">told NY1</a>. The cultural advocacy group cautioned that impact came at a cost to the community as the coronavirus spread.As evictions skyrocketed and joblessness grew, Worrell jumped into gear serving hot meals to frontline workers at two hospitals, including facilities that primarily serve the city's Caribbean population in Brooklyn.Many Black-owned businesses, already severely impacted by <a href="https://bkreader.com/2021/06/16/minority-owned-businesses-call-for-financial-relief-in-bed-stuy/">disparities in access to federal aid</a>, were forced to close altogether or struggled to stay afloat. Among those, Worrell focused efforts on the Caribbean business community federal and state aid can overlook.caribBeing's <a href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1OMsbWM_W_ww7kJP1A90CKNG6fjNpSTECmRD9TRedJ5g/edit#gid=1859336447">directory </a>of Caribbean businesses then served as a one-stop-shop to support local businesses right as a public campaign to support Black-owned businesses gained steam following the killing of George Floyd in June. "We were able to really try to amplify the Caribbean businesses in our neighborhoods to drive traffic and media attention to the community," Worrell said. In South Florida, where the Caribbean diaspora is 21%, drawing attention to community resources was just as much a public health and cultural necessity as an economic one.Black Americans, including Caribbean Americans, are familiar with the country's history of medical exploitation which leaves room for misinformation to propagate.With misinformation about the coronavirus and the vaccine has been spreading in the community, Miami-based attorney Marlon Hill focused primarily on ensuring the people are efficiently educated about what's happening throughout the pandemic, as well as facilitating mental health and wellness of the community. "With the assistance of the Caribbean medical professional community, we have conducted a number of webinars to dispel myths about COVID-19 vaccines and the ongoing pandemic," he told Insider in an email. But Hill told Insider keeping the community culturally connect is as vital as medically informed. South Florida's annual Caribbean carnival was cancelled last October, putting the final nail in the coffin of a festival tourism season that begins with Trinidad and Tobago's pre-Lenten celebration in February.Last year's masquerade of colorful costumes in the twin-island Republic is one of few the region, and its diaspora in the US and elsewhere, have seen ever since - devastating a thriving tourism and cultural entertainment scene.<h2>The pandemic devastated communities reliant on culture and entertainment</h2><div type="image" title="immigration around the world major cities New York City how immigrants are treated West Indian Day Parade" height="1333" width="1778" msid="84084185" hostid="261"></div>Entertainers and entrepreneurs took to social media to connect people the best way they know how - music. Ronnie Tomlinson, director of public relations at Destine Media PR, a full-service agency that works with Caribbean artists, told Insider she was happy to see how naturally entertainers came out to support the diaspora. "Their intention was to relieve the minds of the people," she said. "Just using the music to entertain people. We know they're human, but we also [got to] see that side of them."Similar to <a href="https://variety.com/2020/music/news/dj-d-nice-club-quarantine-rihanna-michelle-obama-interview-1203541666/">D-Nice's Club Quarantine</a> sessions during the pandemic, DJs including Brooklyn-based Kevin Crown and Tony Matterhorn of Jamaica played live music sets designed to virtually recreate the high-energy fetes that can draw thousands of patrons.Over time, his shows garnered as many as 5000 viewers per show. Crown told Insider that those music sessions started to help fans, as well as himself."I even lost my uncle to COVID so it was just a lot of anxiety every day and as much as [my music] helped people, it helped me cope and gave me a purpose," he said, at the time receiving messages from fans that his performance kept them from the brink."Advocates say the tireless work to keep the diaspora together during a time of global suffering will only ramp up as states re-open.Following a pandemic, and racial unrest that saw communities of color targeted, Hill cautioned for political leaders to mitigate some of the socioeconomic and healthcare issues in the community by meeting the community where they are. "Be more proactive in sharing these messages in a vernacular that the community can understand and also see," he said. "Be more proactive in speaking in our language and in our culture."

The pair and her now 10-year old daughter would <keyword id="6354692" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Travel">travel</keyword> to Marrakech, Morocco. But their planning began just as the world was shutting down. In 2020, the novel <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> prompted an unprecedented global pandemic that froze all travel and shut down most borders. Morocco, the Africa's fourth largest <a href="https://wttc.org/Research/Economic-Impact">tourism sector</a> that sees around 11 million international annual arrivals, locked down for four months.Globally, the coronavirus pandemic halted what was<a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/may/04/coronavirus-hits-black-tourism-cultural-loss"> record growth in Black international tourism</a> leading up to last year. Fast-forward a year to when it once again became safe to travel. As countries reopened, the shutdown had thrill seekers eager to venture back abroad. Now popular Black travel destinations in the Caribbean and Africa are looking to rebound.Black travelers told Insider 2020's racial unrest also <a href="https://www.insider.com/black-tourism-experts-demand-travel-confront-americas-racial-reckoning">influenced where they'd go</a> - opting for majority Black nations or destinations significant to their heritage.Forrester felt confident proceeding with her plans, only bigger and with a purpose. "I had an intention to reconnect women of color, of all ages, with their loved ones and bring them together in a space where they can share new experiences and good times after having been separated for so long," the founder of the Quartz Wellness Collective told Insider. "When it started, we all thought it would be over in a few months. But a potential fall shutdown once again looms with the rapid spread of the new variants of the coronavirus, <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/fully-vaccinated-guidance.html">while the CDC updates its mask mandate for vaccinated people</a>. For tourists it can be a hassle to get a COVID-19 test within 72-hours of departure, and get tested before returning home. Bu that's not stopping Black travelers from taking off. Green Book Global, a Black travel review site, released a survey of Black tourists that found most <a href="https://www.adventuretravelnews.com/black-travel-trends-covid-how-an-underserved-market-is-transforming-travel">want to support Black businesses</a> - including 67% who preferred culturally responsible activities within the destination's local community.More than 40% <a href="https://www.adventuretravelnews.com/black-travel-trends-covid-how-an-underserved-market-is-transforming-travel">want their next trip to be Black-oriented</a>, discovering a destination's untold Black connection. Loum-Martin is the only Black female hotelier in Marrakech, owning the 5-star <a href="http://www.jnanetamsna.com">Jnane Tamsna</a>. "Black travel seems to be discovering Marrakech as everywhere I have been recently, I have seen Black Americans," hotelier she said. "However, I am the only Black owner and Black female owner, so in this time of the pandemic more than ever, we count on the support of people who look like us."Popular majority-Black nations that attract Black travelers, like Jamaica, are now welcoming tourists with open arms, but also masked smiles. The Caribbean Tourism Organization <a href="https://www.onecaribbean.org/buy-cto-tourism-statistics/latest-monthly-statistics/">reports</a> from January to May 2021, Jamaica experienced a 36.2% decline costing the country $146 billion in tourism revenue. As of August 3, 2021, 22 islands in the region have <a href="https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ytW37gjS3WeVhN-k4ZK-N5fwgrksljMIEsd6ToGSOB8/edit">reopened to tourism,</a> with 14 allowing visitors from the United States - with negative Covid-19 tests and, usually, periods of quarantine.When Nikkia McClain, founder of Tene Nicole Marketing &amp; Public Relations, learned Jamaica had opened, she immediately planned her firm's annual getaway to <a href="https://jamaica.moonpalace.com/en">Ocho Rios</a>.Hosting nearly three dozen Black women, McClain told Insider the unprecedented racial unrest was the impetus that opened her eyes about exploring and supporting Black nations. "Travel helps you learn about culture, experiences and see the world from a different lens each time," she said. "Although we travel to Jamaica each year for this trip, it was even more meaningful and impactful this year. It made me appreciate our culture even more."As more Black travelers set out to support destinations representing the African diaspora, countries have begun to rebound. Jamaica Tourism Minister Bartlett is <a href="https://www.caribbeannationalweekly.com/caribbean-breaking-news-featured/jamaica-to-welcome-4-2-million-visitors-by-2024/">projecting</a> the country will welcome an estimated 4.2 million visitors, generating some $4 billion in earnings by 2024. A majority of Black travelers in the US had planned to increase their travel once restrictions were fully lifted, according to the Green Book.After a year that saw planes grounded and ships docked, Forrester said the shutdown reinforced the need to "re-define our narratives beyond what we were taught in the history books." As travelers race against the clock and new virus variants, Forrester urged African-Americans, who she said are "told more about slavery than the multitudes of our accomplishments" to forge their own storytelling "in Africa, the Caribbean, South America and beyond." "Nothing teaches you better about a culture than immersing yourself in it," she said. "Our culture has flavored cultures all over the planet and it's not so obvious unless you see it for yourself."
